The Best Cruises to Mexico for Every Traveler

Cruise in Zihuatanejo Mexico

Whether it's world-class diving, white sandy beaches, or Mayan ruins you’re after, a cruise to Mexico can get you there in comfort and style.

Set sail from the West Coast to experience the beaches and nightlife of Cabo San Lucas , stroll the boardwalk in Mazatlan, or dig your toes into the sand in Puerto Vallarta. For diving and Mayan ruins, opt to cruise Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Dive into the deep blue water in Cozumel, walk a beach free of high-rise hotels in Costa Maya, or walk in the footsteps of the ancient Mayans in Tulum .

Several major cruise lines serve these routes with decked-out ships that offer something for everyone. Sprawling pools, thumping dance clubs, and fresh margaritas are just the beginning.

This is the domain of large cruise ships, but there are a few smaller vessels—like American Queen Voyages’ Ocean Navigator —that cruise to Mexico .

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line sail to Mexico from the West Coast year-round. Three Carnival ships—the Carnival Miracle , Carnival Panorama, and Carnival Residence — cruise to Mexico from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Norwegian Cruise Line sails to Mexico from California, Florida, and New Orleans.

Princess Cruises, Holland America, Disney Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises sail to Mexico seasonally. While Mexico is warm year-round, you’ll find the most pleasant temperatures—and some of the best prices— between November through February. Mexico’s rainy season is from May through November, but expect bursts of showers instead of washouts. Hurricane season is between June and November, and while hurricanes don't always make landfall, the rains they bring can put a damper on even the best-planned beach day.

Whatever it is you’re looking for, and whenever it is you’re looking to set sail, there’s a cruise to Mexico that’s sure to feel tailor-made for you.

Best short cruise to Mexico

In just three nights, Royal Caribbean's  Navigator of the Seas sails from Los Angeles to Ensenada, Mexico, and back.  The itinerary includes a full day at sea—plenty of time to take a few laps around the ship’s ice skating rink, spend a few hours at the spa, try out the longest water slide at sea and catch a show. Of course, you could just spend your entire sea day lounging around on the pool deck eating Johnny Rockets and sipping on colorful cocktails. If you’ve got a little bit more time, opt for a four-night itinerary. Royal Caribbean offers two four-night itineraries on the  Navigator of the Seas . One adds a stop at idyllic Catalina Island. The other spends additional time in Ensenada.

Best weeklong cruise to Mexico

There may be no better way to bliss out than by sailing the  Norwegian Bliss along the Mexican Riviera. Sail roundtrip from Los Angeles, stopping in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Ensenada, Mexico. Spend port days visiting tequila factories, wineries and endless sandy beaches. Or opt for an adventurous 4x4 ride, snorkeling, kayaking or an idyllic horseback ride. On board the ship, you’ll have your choice of 19 restaurants, 20 bars, and plenty of things to do. The  Norwegian Bliss made its debut in 2018, and its entertainment offerings include a two-level  racetrack , Broadway shows, laser tag, mini golf and a casino. The ship has a private 18 and over beach club and a spa with both a salt room and a snow room.

Best family cruise to Mexico

There is so much to do on board the  Carnival Radiance your family might not want to leave the ship on port days. The  Carnival Radiance has a water park, a ropes course, mini golf, sports courts, and a kids club that accommodates ages two to 17. There’s also a teen spa, video arcade and enough room to play soccer, basketball, and volleyball on board. With more than a dozen restaurants, there’s something for even the most discerning junior palate. There’s even a green eggs and ham breakfast to go with a Seuss at Sea experience inspired by the famous author’s books.

Cuadro 44 Restaurant Deck 6 Midship Portside.Star Breeze Windstar Cruises

Windstar Star Legend's Cuadro 44 Restaurant

Best small ship cruise to Mexico

You could cruise to Mexico on a mega-ship. Or you could opt for a calmer, quieter, more yacht-like experience on Windstar Cruises’  Star Legend . This all-suite yacht boasts cabins that are nearly 300 square feet. The ship is fresh off a major renovation with a new spa, pool, and fitness center. Every bathroom on board has gotten a makeover and comes stocked with L’Occitane toiletries. The  Star Legend is scheduled to set sail from Miami in the spring. Windstar's  Jungles and Jewels of the Central American Coast itinerary sails roundtrip from Miami, stoppings in Key West en route to Cozumel and Costa Maya. But Mexico is just the beginning. Windstar’s  Star Legend also calls on Belize City, Belize, and Roatan, Honduras, giving passengers plenty of chances to go on an unforgettable dive, immerse themselves in ancient ruins or simply soak up the sunshine.

Best cruise to the Yucatan Peninsula

Mega ships aren’t the only vessels that cruise to Mexico . American Queen Voyages’  Ocean Navigator is less than one-tenth of the size of the behemoth ships sailing the region. The ship can accommodate just over 200 passengers and feels more like a river cruise ship than an ocean-going vessel. Restaurant and bar choices are limited, but that might not matter much when you’re sipping margaritas and snacking on molletes at the beach. The  Ocean Navigator ’s Mexico itineraries visit seven ports in 10 days, giving passengers the chance to dive into Cozumel’s deep blue water, explore Chichen Itza’s Mayan ruins, and sip on margaritas in Cancun. This isn’t the kind of ship that parties all night, but that should make it easier to wake up for gorgeous sunrises. The price of this all-inclusive cruise includes food, drinks, room service, Wi-Fi, pre-paid gratuities, port fees, and taxes.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Best luxury cruise to Mexico

There may be few more luxurious ways to arrive in Cabo San Lucas than on board Regent’s new  Seven Seas Grandeur . The cruise line's  Magic on the Mexican Riviera itinerary is scheduled to sail round trip from Los Angeles in late 2024, calling on ports including Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Puerto Vallarta. The 10-night journey includes three luxurious days of cruising the Pacific Ocean. Spend your sea days lounging around your spacious suite, playing bocce ball or shuffleboard or relaxing by the pool bar. The ship's suites range in size from 307 to 4,443 square feet. Each comes with a private balcony, and there may be no better place on board to enjoy your morning coffee with a view. Cruise fares on Regent Seven Seas include roundtrip business class intercontinental flights, unlimited shore excursions, unlimited beverages, specialty restaurants, and gratuities.

Best cruise to the Mexican Riviera

If you’re looking to touch grass at sea and sample the best of the Mexican Riviera, the  Celebrity Solstice is for you. This ship is home to a half acre of real green grass and sails from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. This is a ship with a cool vibe, a sophisticated feel, and lots of fun things to do on board. Try a cocktail-making class or a wine-blending class. Or catch a glass-blowing show on the grass. The ship is also home to more than 200 solar panels and generates some of its own electricity.

Baja Cruises

Baja California is the second-longest peninsula in the world. Extending from the southern U.S. the Baja peninsula borders the Pacific Ocean on the west, and the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) on the east. Take a Baja mexico cruise down the breathtaking western coastline to experience some of the most pristine beaches in the Pacific, and most notably, the sheltered lagoons of Magdalena Bay and San Ignacio Lagoon, where gray whales migrate to give birth during winter. Around the southern tip or horn of the peninsula is the Los Cabos region. Find bird sanctuaries, the Cabo Pulmo National Park marine reserve and Land’s End, where the iconic “El Arco” rock formation marks the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez.

Between Baja California’s eastern coast and Mexico’s mainland is a unique body of water famously known to be crystal-clear and rich with sea life. Often called the “Aquarium of the World,” the Sea of Cortez is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one-third of Earth’s marine mammal species. Visit the vibrant seaside towns of Loreto and La Paz then a Sea Cortez small ship cruise to some of the 244 islands like Espíritu Santo, Los Islotes and Santa Catalina. Watch dolphins, whales and rays from the bow of a Baja cruise ship, or don a snorkel and mask for even closer aquatic exploration. AdventureSmith’s Baja cruises reveal the hidden gems of this wilderness paradise in our own backyard.

What Travelers Say About Their Baja Mexico Cruise

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew. Getting small groups into snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, or scenic boating was amazing!

We most enjoyed swimming with the Sea Lions, watching our kids play with them and the trip to watch the whales. And the snorkeling. And the hiking. And the burro ride. And and and.....

Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

This trip was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. The scenery, the accommodations, the activities, the staff on the ship all combined for a winner of a week. Our cozy cabin on the ship was all that we needed. The meals blew me away. This particular trip was a good value for all that we received.

I truly don't think it could have been better. Prepare for a real adventure, geared for most 'age groups'!

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew.

Accommodations Review

I thought our cabin was in the perfect location. We had a gorgeous view and no one could walk past our window. We were also close to the lounge and dining room.

Meals Review

Snacks at 4 pm instead of 5 pm or 6 pm would have been nice.

Crew & Guides Review

Jeremy did a terrific job of organizing our activities. Getting small groups into snorkeling, or kayaking, or hiking, or scenic boating was amazing! We felt very safe snorkeling.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Your packing list was fine but the boat provided binoculars and water bottles so we didn't need to pack them. [Our Adventure Specialist] was very helpful in choosing a cabin.

Featured in this Traveler Review

  • Baja California's Whales & Sealife
  • Safari Endeavour

Jeremy, Sara, Lindsey, JP, Megan. All very professional, safety conscious, informative, and FUN. It was special seeing familiar faces in the crew and enjoying new ones. Our whole family really enjoyed the experience.

As always everything was great. Thanks! We're ready for the next one.

Our trip on the Westward was wonderful! Captain Bill and his crew were exemplary in all ways, and did their utmost to ensure complete passenger satisfaction on all levels. Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

Though rooms are very small on the boat, which was to be expected, they are comfortable. The boat wasn't completely finished when we boarded it, so there were a few items missing in the staterooms (i.e. mirrors in the cabins, hooks to hang anything on, door jambs, etc.)

There was also a lot of finishing construction being done on one of the staterooms, so there was some dust and smells, and noises. We were all good sports about it, and amazed at the transformations that occurred during our trip.

Chef Tracie is a magician in the kitchen!  Her meals were incredible --tasty, creative, healthy and filling. It was always so much fun to see what she prepared. It was also fun to watch her work in the kitchen, whipping up cuisine with influences from all over the globe. She also made great use of the fresh fish, scallops and clams that our naturalist guide Carlos secured for her.  Mealtimes were delightful! Tracie also goes out of her way to make sure that passengers' dietary needs are adhered to, so no worries if you are gluten free, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, etc.

The material provided ahead of time was ample and we particularly appreciated the suggested book list. We did not know, however, that the boat wasn't fully completed until we got on it. We would have appreciated knowing this information prior to our trip.

Our naturalist guide Carlos did a fabulous job introducing us to the flora and fauna of Baja. He is very knowledgeable and interesting, and has a great sense of humor. He patiently answered all of our questions, told us great stories and helped the group in so many ways. He is kind, warm and engaging, with years of experience (kayak guide, snorkeling/diving expert, wildlife specialist, safety/first aid, etc.). We truly enjoyed his company.

Captain Bill is a very experienced seaman who always puts safety first. We felt very secure with him at the helm. He is incredibly personable and a great storyteller, and adds so much to the experience. Bill does everything possible to make his passengers happy and fulfill their needs and wishes. He aims to please, like the rest of his crew, who treat their passengers as family.

The engineer and carpenter, Randy, was also an integral crew member, who added much to the overall experience. He is a very kind man and incredibly skillful at his work, who also possesses a great sense of humor with many stories to tell. We were in awe of the work he did on the ship, while we were onboard.

Traveler Advice

Follow the guidelines provided in regards to items and clothing to bring, as the list is very thorough. Although there is hiking, heavy hiking boots are not necessary. A pair of gym shoes is fine. Reading some of the books suggested is helpful to provide you with some knowledge of the area prior to your trip. Don't over pack, as you can wash your clothes in your sink and hang them dry up on deck.

  • Westward Voyages in the Sea of Cortez

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. Plenty of relaxation, wonderful food immaculately presented, not to mention the exciting activities. I kayaked, snorkeled with whale sharks feeding on plankton, swam with playful sea lion pups, got close up to a baby grey whale, spotted birds plus five types of whale, hiked round cactus, ate marshmallows round a camp fire and only fell off the stand-up paddle board once. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

The trip of a lifetime on “Westward” ticked at least 20 first time experiences -the main one being living aboard the most beautifully restored 84 year old 87’ Historic Registered Vessel. It felt rather like being transported back to the 1930s as a guest on a friend’s yacht.

Bill, Tracie and Carlos’ love of Baja and all its wildlife is outstanding. From details of the largest creature on earth, the Blue Whale, to the life of the tiny Lion ant all imparted informally, no lectures. With such a small group and no fixed itinerary Captain Bill can allow for interests, preferences, photo opportunities and can make the best of the weather; you are at sea after all.

This trip was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. The scenery, the accommodations, the activities, the staff on the ship all combined for a winner of a week. I have wanted to go to the Baja for years, but didn't think I could ever afford to do it in the way that Uncruise did it. Now I'm finally at a point in my life where I can afford it, but also this particular trip was a good value for all that we received. We met two couples on this trip that we plan to see again. What a great bonus!

Our cozy cabin on the ship was all that we needed. The fact that the cabins were cleaned/attended to daily made the small space do-able.

The meals blew me away. Not only were the meals healthful and thoughtfully planned, but special requests were honored with a smile. I enjoyed always having options, and everything I tried was delicious. I feel that the selection of beers and wines could stand to be looked at again. Some were good, and some just didn't add much to the dining experience.

All of the guides had a great level of enthusiasm, and were ready to help in any way that they could. Lindsey from Montana was exceptionally helpful and caring. Liz gave an excellent massage. Esa brought smoothies after our yoga class one morning. Jeremy had great knowledge to share on our desert hikes.

Itinerary Review

I was really there for the snorkeling, which was great, but I literally had tears streaming down my face when we encountered a blue whale one evening. I had not expected to be lucky enough to see one, and the sound of the whale exhaling as it surfaced in front of our boat is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I enjoyed the experience of being in the midst of an explosion of life. Combined with the remoteness, this was a good combination for me. There were no places that I did not enjoy. On the last night of the trip, we were treated to a slide show of the week's activities, put together by the staff.

Transportation Review

We made airport transfers on our own, so I cannot comment on that part, but all transport during the trip was great. The suggestion to stay at El Encanto the day before we met the group was a good one.

The intro materials about the Baja could stand to be bulked up a little.

Be prepared for the trip of a lifetime!

I truly don't think it could have been better.

Excellent. They were kind enough to meet my vegan requests!

All superb...especially appreciated Merith and Mike. Also, the on-ship personnel were great, in particular Jennie and Josh, stewards.

Liked them all! [I most enjoyed] hikes on the islands and skiff tours. Made most everything available to all.

Prepare for a real adventure, geared for most 'age groups'!

Small Ship Baja Cruise: La Paz, Mexico

The sea of cortez.

Abundant wildlife, natural wonders, and warm clear waters make the Sea of Cortez one of the best ecotourism destinations. Dubbed “The World’s Aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau, these waters are home to over 900 species of fish and nearly 32 types of marine mammals that gather to mate and feed in the warm waters of this oceanic paradise. A  UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Sea of Cortez is the richest body of water on our entire planet, making it a must-see for anyone who loves the ocean.

Baja Cruise Overview

Experience a variety of marine life, including whale sharks, gray whales, dolphins, sea lions, and more as you cruise the waters of the Sea of Cortez. Knowledgeable guides share the rich cultural and natural history of the Baja region, and local ingredients are part of the cuisine. The smaller size of this ship gives you entrée into areas of Baja you would never experience on a bigger ship or by land. Fewer passengers on-board means that expeditions are made up of small groups and the crew can devote more attention to their guests. No hidden fees for excursions gives you the option to kayak, hike, snorkel, paddleboard, or hang out on-board and enjoy the view.

This sample itinerary is only a guideline; variations may occur to maximize your experience.

The captain and crew welcome you aboard just in time for a cocktail and dinner with your new mates.

Day 3 – Bahía Agua Verde

At Bahía Agua Verde, clear waters are bordered by sparse craggy mountains hemmed in green. Explore the coast by small skiff before visiting with a local ranchero and his family. Finally take to the canyons and mountains on a mule ride and experience the “real Baja.” Scenic vistas, outstanding exploration, excellent birding, and unmatched camaraderie.

Day 4 – Captain’s Choice

While it’s unlikely you’ll find any black pearls, today you’ll sail amongst islands once explored by early conquistadors. Adventurous options available include kayaking, hiking, paddleboarding, or beach combing. Discover nature’s diversity and learn about the geologic forces that formed these islands.

Day 5 – Marine Life Search

Magdalena Bay (mid-January – early-March) Mother Nature is your guide today. Gray whales arrive each year on Baja’s west coast after migrating more than 12,000 miles to calve in Bahía Magdalena. Dock in Puerto Escondido, then drive across the peninsula to ride in a panga and observe these mammals and their babies in the lagoon. -OR- Bahía de la Paz (November – mid-January; March; the order of days will change) Whale sharks, the largest known species of fish, are known to frequent the bay. Keep watch for the watery “footprints” of these gentle giants. Conditions permitting, gear up for an unforgettable swim alongside this colossal creature or observe from above in the skiff.

Day 6 – Los Islotes / Isla Partida

At Los Islotes, a steep craggy seamount leaping straight from the sea, observe a sea lion colony from the boat and skiff. Slip into a wetsuit for an early morning snorkel with curious, agile young sea lion pups. Afterwards, heave anchor and set sail for Isla Partida, for an afternoon of water play or island hikes along desert beaches and` rocky arroyos.

Day 7 – Isla Espíritu Santo

Tuck into a secluded cove surrounded by long fingers of red rock and a golden beach. Spend your last full day enjoying the feel of warm sand under your feet on a beach walk. Investigate nooks and crannies in the rocks by kayak. Or explore a little further afield on a guided hike. Celebrate your week at tonight’s special Farewell Dinner with an entertaining slideshow.

Day 8 – La Paz / San José – Disembark

After breakfast, it’s “adios” La Paz, as you disembark the vessel and transfer back to San José del Cabo for your flight.

Ms. Kahlo is one of Mexico’s most revered artists, famed for her bold self-portraits, vibrant colors, and attention to Mexican culture. She suffered from polio as a child and nearly died in bus accident at the age of 18. It was during her long convalescence that she turned to painting. This morning’s visit explores her life and its impact upon her work. After lunch, we continue to Xcaret to learn more about the eco-systems of the Yucatan. The exhibits at this eco-archaeological park include a Butterfly Pavilion and a state-of-the-art aviary with more than 1,500 colorful tropical birds. Four of the world’s seven species of marine turtles nest here along the Yucatan’s Caribbean coast. Xcaret’s Turtle Conservation Program will teach us more about these creatures and the work being done to preserve them. Tonight, we thrill to the Dinner Show at Xcaret. Mexico Espectacular is a kaleidoscopic performance with more than 300 actors and dancers, authentic costumes, advanced technology, and elaborate sets. It traces Mexican history and culture from pre-Hispanic times to the modern era.  After the show, we’ll return to our ship in Puerto Morelos.  Meals B+L+D

Discover Tulum

This morning’s guided excursion takes us to Tulum, an ancient Mayan city surrounded by defensive walls. It has a spectacular cliff-top setting overlooking the Caribbean. It has a spectacular cliff-top setting overlooking the Caribbean. We’ll enter through one of Tulum’s five ancient doorways for a guided tour that takes us back to ancient times when Tulum was a seaport for trading turquoise and jade. Among its most impressive structures, El Castillo likely served as both a temple and a fortress. It sits on a 40-foot limestone cliff above a beautiful white-sand beach. After a buffet lunch on the beach, we’ll return to the Victory II . The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy the Open Bar, welcoming outdoor spaces, and congenial lounges of our elegant ship. You might also join an enriching talk with our shipboard experts or even step ashore here in Puerto Morelos to explore on your own.  Meals B+L+D

Valladolid + Overnight at Chichen Itza

After breakfast, we travel to Valladolid to spend some time visiting Casa de los Venados. This outstanding museum is set in a sprawling 18,000 square foot residence and houses Mexico’s largest private collection of folk art. Our sightseeing continues with the Colonial-era landmarks of Valladolid. We’ll admire the Cathedral of San Gervasio that dominates the town’s picturesque central plaza. Just a few minutes from town at the lovely Hacienda Selva Maya , we’ll sit down to a congenial lunch featuring Mexican and Mayan-inspired cuisine. This afternoon we travel to the historic Mayaland Hotel at Chichen Itza. This was the first hotel ever to be built within an archaeological site. After check-in, you’ll have time to refresh before an early dinner. As hotel guests, we’ll be the only cruise ship passengers this evening to attend the thrilling Sound & Light Show at Chichen Itza. With the towering step pyramid of Kukulcan as the main backdrop, this amazing spectacle uses 3-D technology to bring the 1,500-year-old Mesoamerican ruins to life.  Meals B+L+D

Sunrise at Chichen Itza c + Izamal

As Victory II guests at the Mayaland Hotel , we’ll enjoy an exclusive sunrise tour of Chichen Itza. For nearly 1,000 years, this was the greatest city of the Yucatan. It is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its remarkable synthesis of Mayan construction techniques with new elements brought by Toltec warriors from the central Mexican plateau. Before the influx of day visitors arrive, our expertly guided tour will explore the finest of Chichen Itza’s many monumental landmarks. These include the El Caracol Observatory, Temple of Kukulcan, the Great Ball Court and the Jaguar Temple. We’ll return to the Mayaland Hotel for breakfast and then travel to Izamal for a guided tour. This Mayan town emerged as a religious center during the Early Classic Period more than 1,400 years ago. The Spanish arrived in the early 16th century and erected an enormous Franciscan Monastery that stands to this day. We’ll tour the monastery and other Colonial-era buildings that give Izamal its timeless charm. After lunch at Kinich , you can explore the nearby Mayan Pyramid at your own pace. The Victory II has now sailed around the tip of the Yucatan to dock in Progreso on the Peninsula’s Gulf-side coast. Back onboard you’ll have time to refresh before cocktails and dinner.  Meals B+L+D

The Great Mayan City of Mayapan

We step off ship this morning in the charming port of Progreso. Our guided excursion takes us to Mayapan, the last great capital of the Mayan Empire. Because there are fewer visitors here than at other archaeological sites in the Yucatan, we can look forward to an enlightening tour without large crowds. Mayapan was once a thriving city of 15,000 residents, but it was attacked and abandoned in the 15th century. Today there are impressive ruins like the main pyramid, residences of the noble class, temples, and altars. We’ll also see unusual round buildings once used as ancient observatories. Finely preserved carvings and glyphs bear further witness to Mayan culture. We continue to Merida, the modern capital of the Yucatan, for lunch and a city tour. Rich with Mayan and Colonial heritage, Merida has many centuries-old landmarks including the Cathedral and the Iglesia El Jesus Tercera Orden. Both were built with local stone and relics salvaged from ancient Mayan temples. At the renowned Mayan World Museum of Merida, we’ll discover a remarkable collection of artifacts. In addition, state-of-the-art exhibits tell the story of the origin, rise and fall of this once-great civilization. It provides the perfect background and context for the archaeological sites on our sightseeing program. We return to our ship for cocktails and another elegant dinner. Our ship is docked overnight in Progreso.  Meals B+L+D

Village of Nolo + Hacienda Sotuta de Peon

From Progreso, we travel again into the interior of the Yucatan Peninsula to Nolo. This welcoming community of only 1,500 residents offers an intimate view of Mexican life. By special arrangement, our guests will witness a healing Shamanic ceremony performed by a Mayan priest. This genuine cultural experience is rarely afforded to visitors, and our guests have been asked to wear white; the Victory II will provide appropriate serapes which you may keep. We’ll also spend some time on a 19th-century hacienda that once belonged to the wealthy Peon family. Set on verdant grounds with a grand colonnaded verandah, our tour of this lavish estate begins on a wooden platform pulled by mules along old tracks that wind their way through the estate. This traditional mode of transport once carried workers into the vast agave cactus fields where they would cultivate and harvest this important plant. We’ll also see some of the original machinery that was used to process this henequen cactus into fiber that could be used for everything from hammocks to the giant hawsers that tie our ship to the dock! A delightful luncheon of authentic Mexican fare highlights our tour of the Hacienda Sotuta. We’ll be back onboard the Victory II with time to refresh before we gather again for cocktails and dinner. This evening, we set sail for Campeche.  Meals B+L+D

Disembark + Discover Campeche c

After breakfast and disembarkation, we’ll begin our exploration of this Colonial gem – recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the charming main plaza of town, our narrated Trolley Tour is the perfect way to experience the pastel-hued buildings, timeless cobblestone streets and handsome centuries-old mansions of Campeche’s historic city-center. Next we’ll discover the Colonial fortifications at San Miguel. Then at the Archaeological Museum, we’ll see ancient tools made of ceramic and obsidian and the famous jade mask excavated from a Mayan tomb at Calakmul. We’ll take a break from sightseeing to have lunch at Palapa del Tío Fito . Then a walking tour will show us more of Campeche’s historic landmarks. Admire the lovely yellow façade of San Roque Church and the Cathedral. We also see the King’s Lieutenant’s House, former residence of the Spanish King’s military representative in the Yucatan. After sightseeing, we’ll take you to the Hotel Plaza Campeche here in the historic heart of town. You’ll have time to refresh and relax in your room before dining this evening at La Parrilla . Enjoy fine Mexican cuisine served in a setting that blends Colonial architecture and contemporary flair. Then we head to the central plaza for Celebremos Campeche . Projected onto the façade of a historic building, this 30-minute Sound + Light Show uses exciting visuals and music to tell the history of Campeche. After dinner, we’ll return to our hotel.  Meals B+L+D

In + Around Campeche

After breakfast , our visit to one of Campeche’s colonial-era homes offers a deeper look into the cultural heritage of this historic town. We’ll also learn about one of the region’s most famous crafts and exports. Known locally as Jipijapas, this Yucatan version of the Panama hat is still woven by hand from the pliable leaves of the Jipijapa palm tree. Just north of Campeche, the village of Becal is especially known for the fine quality of its hats. At midday, you’ll have free time to explore on your own. A Victory II exclusive allows you to enjoy a wonderful à la carte lunch at one of the region’s finest restaurants. This evening, we’ll enjoy a private folkloric ballet performance at the historic Teatro Toro and dinner at La Pigua . Then we return to our hotel for this final night of the Land of the Maya.  Meals B+L+D

Fly to Miami

I Spent a Week in Mexico on a Small Cruise Ship, and This Is What It Was Like

Photo of author

Sixty-six guests. That’s all this ship holds, so compared to the mammoth cruise ships that carry several thousand vacationers, I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, the thought of a more intimate sailing was so intriguing my curiosity was piqued, and I wanted to know more.

The Right Decision

Kayaking on ocean water

Hands down, spending a week on the Safari Voyager, one of Uncruise Adventures’ sailing vessels, was a smart choice and one worth a lifetime of memories. The keyword here is “adventure,” and really sums up what an expedition cruise is. Want to sleep in till noon, graze the buffets all day, and dance the night away with a few thousand fellow drunk passengers? This is not your ship.

Plan for Adventure

man on boat in ocean

However, if you’re up for kayaking, swimming with sea lion pups, whale watching, exploring authentic Mexican towns and eating more gourmet food than a person has a right to, this is your ship. Here are some of the things you’ll experience when you sail on the 7 Night Baja Vacation Cruise to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez.

*We were invited on the Uncruise Adventure’s Baja California Sur cruise as guests. My views and the opinions I share are 100% my own and are reflective of our genuine experiences. (Experiences we truly enjoyed, as you’ll be able to see in the photos!)

Whales, Whales and More Whales

Spend an afternoon on a guided whale watching tour and you’re all but guaranteed to see mamma gray whales with their babies!

Gray Whales So Close You Can Almost Touch Them

Uncruise Adventures - Sea of Cortez whale watching 7

The whales come right up to your boat, swim around it, under it and between boats. It’s truly incredible to see.

Sea Life, Up Close and Personal

sea lion pup with divers

Swimming with sea lion pups is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They are so playful and curious…just like puppies!

You Have Options

seal lion pup with diver

As with every activity Uncruise Adventures plans, they offer alternatives, so if you don’t want to swim with the sea lions, you can take a photography tour around the island in a skiff. You’ll still see sea lions, but from your boat instead of face-to-face in the water.

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the “world’s aquarium.” Once you go snorkeling there, you’ll understand why!

Snorkeling Gear Provided

Another benefit Uncruise Adventures offers is that they provide wet suits and snorkeling gear, so you don’t have to pack your own. Very convenient. (And yes, the water really is that clear!)

Practically Private Beaches

Seagull on seashore in Mexico

A huge advantage small cruise ships have over large ships is being able to navigate small inlets and secluded beaches.

Uninhibited Beauty

Uncruise Adventures - Safari Voyager - beachview

Their experienced crew is fabulous at getting guests to and from the shore in skiffs, setting up chairs and even a drink station on the beach so you’ll have everything you need to enjoy your time there.

Herons Along the Shore

Your ship-to-shore excursions will be filled with nature, not shopping malls.

Blue Footed Boobies

Perhaps the most popular bird species in Baja California Sur is the adorable Blue Footed Boobie. Its feet can turn more or less vibrant, depending on what food it eats.

Take Your Camera!

Did I mention you’ll want to bring your camera everywhere you go?

Fabulous Food, Morning, Noon, and Night

With a very experienced chef, sous chef, and pastry chef onboard, you can expect gourmet quality meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Options With Each Meal

Uncruise Adventures - Safari Voyager - dinner

You’ll be offered a choice of meat, fish, or vegetarian for almost every meal. Can’t decide? Order half and half so you can try more than one!

Sustainability Matters

Uncruise Adventures - Safari Voyager - lamb dinner

Uncruise Adventures sources almost all ingredients locally and takes great pride in limiting food waste. We definitely appreciated the amount of effort that goes into menu planning for the guests and crew.

A Crew That Goes All Out to Take Care of Guests

Uncruise Adventures - Safari Voyager

Uncruise Adventures scored big time with the crew it has onboard. They are knowledgeable, experienced, and compassionate. You’ll fall in love with them as much as the adventure itself.

A Chance to Explore Authentic Mexico

Loreto Mexico sign

You’ll have the opportunity to visit one of Mexico’s “magical towns” with a guided tour and then on your own. This is a great time to pick up a souvenir of your trip.

A Photographer’s Dream

The opportunity for beautiful photos is endless. Be sure to bring extra SD cards!

Burro Rides

Uncruise Adventures - Safari Voyager - mule rides

You’ll meet an authentic Mexican family who raises burros on their land near the beach. These gentle animals will take you on a guided ride along the coast and through the beautiful countryside.

Golden Sunrises

Good morning, Sunshine! I took this gorgeous sunrise photo sitting on the bed looking out the cabin window. I could get used to that every day!

And Fiery Sunsets

Of course, sunsets in Baja California Sur are just as breathtaking.

Is This Even Real?

7 Cruises to Mexico for Every Type of Traveler

These cruises to Mexico offer exciting excursions and plenty to do on board.

small ship cruises to mexico

There's much to discover in Mexico , from sandy beaches to dense jungles, modern cities to ancient ruins, and fresh seafood to traditional Mexican dishes , along with friendly, welcoming people. The country is large, and there are fascinating destinations on both the east and west coasts as well as the southern tip of Baja where Los Cabos offers luxurious resorts on the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez.

With a cruise, you can visit a variety of ports and enjoy the onboard amenities on your way to somewhere new each day. Organized excursions at each port offer a range of options from lazy beach days to exciting adventures. An obvious benefit of cruising is being able to experience several destinations with no worries about changing hotels, packing up, and transportation. Most ships offer pools, spas, fitness centers, and several dining options as well as entertainment and enrichment activities.

Cruises range from just a few days — a perfect introduction for new cruisers — to longer voyages of ten days or more. We have some examples here that might inspire you to visit Mexico with the convenience of a cruise.

Here are seven cruises to Mexico that all travelers will enjoy.

Norwegian Cruise Line

7-day Mexican Riviera Cruise: Cabo and Puerto Vallarta

Boarding in San Diego, California, Norwegian Jewel spends one day cruising south to the first port, Cabo San Lucas. Guests can spend the day in the popular tourist destination where there's world-class sport fishing, exclusive resorts, shopping, and restaurants. Puerto Vallarta is the stop for the next day, with spectacular beaches, open-air markets, and historic cobblestone streets. After cruising overnight, the ship arrives in Mazatlan, where guests have the morning to explore the city, stop for a lunch of Mexican cuisine, and shop for local handicrafts.

The next day is spent at sea giving cruisers a chance to enjoy the ship's amenities, including the spa, restaurants, cocktail lounges, and evening entertainment. The following morning, the ship arrives in Ensenada for a day in port for shopping, wineries, and a visit to the Riviera del Pacifico 1930's resort. The ship returns to San Diego for disembarkation the next morning.

Carnival Cruises

5-day Baja Mexico Cruise from San Francisco

This five-day cruise aboard Carnival Miracle begins in San Francisco, departing in late afternoon so guests can spend the morning in the city. For dinner on board the ship, five restaurants include Bonsai Sushi, Blue Iguana Cantina, Steakhouse, and Guy's Burger Joint. During the next day at sea, guests can enjoy the pool, theater, cocktail lounges, and adults-only retreat. For kids, there's Camp Ocean, Seuss at Sea, and Waterworks, an onboard water park.

On day three, the ship docks in San Diego, and guests have the day to visit the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and downtown before cruising to Ensenada, the next port. There, the options include horseback riding, a wine country tour, Jeep safari, off-road tour, or shopping and lunch in town. Next, there's another day at sea to enjoy the ship's amenities before arriving back in San Francisco for disembarkation.

Holland America

10-day Mexico and the Sea of Cortez Cruise

Guests board Zaandam in San Diego. The next day is spent at sea, giving cruisers time to enjoy BBC Earth Experiences, theatrical entertainment, and their choice of restaurants. When the ship arrives in Los Cabos, passengers can spend the day fishing, playing golf, whale watching, cruising in a catamaran, scuba diving, or exploring the town.

The ship arrives in the seaside town of Loreto the following day and guests can attend a Mexican fiesta, ride in a glass-bottom boat, or walk through a canyon searching for fossils. La Paz is next, with options to kayak through a mangrove forest, visit artisan studios, snorkel, or swim with docile whale sharks. The cruise continues to Mazaltan and Puerto Vallarta before one more day at sea as you return to San Diego.

Sunstone Tours and Cruises

Baja's Bounty 8-day Cruise

This small ship cruise aboard the 66-passenger Safari Voyager begins when guests arrive at Los Cabos International Airport to meet the expedition team and travel over land to La Paz for boarding and a welcome dinner. The small ship features spacious decks, big windows, colorful art, and an air-conditioned lounge.

The next day, the ship arrives in the Gulf of California Biosphere Reserve for snorkeling, hiking, or relaxing on the beach. At Bahia Agua Verde the following day, cruisers can visit a local ranchero, take a mule ride, or explore the coast in a small skiff. The next stop is at Isla San Francisco, with a desert beach where guests can kayak, paddle board, or just enjoy the rugged beauty of the island. In the Sea of Cortez, cruisers observe whales, dolphins, and marine life.

The cruise continues to Los Islotes and Isla Partida with options for beach hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, or paddle boarding. On Isla Espiritu Santo, the ship tucks into a secluded cove for the last day of exploring and the evening farewell dinner. The next day, guests disembark in La Paz for a transfer back to San José del Cabo for a flight or extended stay.

Princess Cruises

7-day Mexican Riviera Cruise

The Majestic Princess departs from Los Angeles, where guests have an opportunity to take a tour of the beach cities of Venice and Santa Monica. The next day at sea gives cruisers time to enjoy the ship's amenities, including cooking demonstrations, dance classes, enrichment programs, pools, and hot tubs. Entertainment includes musical productions, the casino, movies, and lounges. For young cruisers, there are teen lounges, movies, and age-appropriate activities for three to 17 year olds.

In Cabo San Lucas, guests can choose from excursions including a coastal cruise, snorkel tour, horseback ride on the beach, off-road adventure, sunset sail, or food experience. The next day is spent in Mazatlan, where options include a harbor cruise, hike, bus tour, shopping, cooking class, zipline, or turtle beach. In Puerto Vallarta, there's a choice of excursions that include a tequila tasting, dolphin encounter, city tour, art experience, snorkel, sea lion swim, and ATV adventure.

With two days at sea before arriving back in Los Angeles, guests have time to dine at the ship's restaurants for French, Mandarin, or Italian cuisine. There's the Crown Grill steakhouse, Lobster & Dim Sum Bar, Wine Bar, Bakery, and more. Cruisers can rejuvenate at the Lotus Spa with a massage and facial, or indulge in a makeover in the salon. For kids, there are Discovery at SEA experiences like stargazing in the indoor planetarium.

Oceania Cruises

7-day Miami to Miami Tropical Retreat

Guests board Sirena in Miami and spend the next day at sea enjoying the ship's amenities that include wine tasting, guest lectures, cooking classes, afternoon tea, a casino, pool and sports deck, and spa. Guests can dine at the Polo Grill steakhouse, Toscana for Italian dishes, Jacques for French food, Red Ginger for Asian cuisine, and a variety of casual spots and lounges. The next day, the ship visits Harvest Caye in Belize with tropical rainforests teeming with wildlife, the world's second-largest coral reef, and a local artisans' village. Small Ship Cruises in Sea of Cortez

A Sea of Cortez Cruise is a perfect way to enjoy Mexico's Baja California Peninsula's raw natural splendor and wildlife. Created by intense earthquakes and volcanic activity, the peninsula was gradually ripped apart from mainland Mexico, with the deep chasm, now known as the Sea of Cortez, filled with water from the Pacific Ocean. Volcanic peaks tumbled into the water, some forming islands that stud the sparkling waters.

The water body is today one of the most ecologically diverse places on the planet. Home to more than 900 types of fish and around 2,000 species of other marine life, some of which can only be found in this part of the world, cruises to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico are a dream come true for marine biology fans.

As well as being able to discover a rich underwater ecosystem, diverse land creatures provide even more fantastic wildlife encounters. Beautiful views and a wide assortment of activities and trips make a cruise around the Sea of Cortez an exciting option for a Mexican vacation.

Top things to do and see in the Sea Of Cortez

Known for its diverse marine life and volcanic landscapes, some top things to do and see on a Sea of Cortez small ship cruise include:

Loreto Bay Marine Park - With its many sparkling shades of blue, the UNESCO-listed Loreto Bay National Marine Park is like a dream come true for many. A highlight of a Mexico cruise, the protected area is home to abundant wildlife and many incredible views. Enjoy kayaking here.

Bahia Agua Verde - A top spot for fishing and other sporting activities, experience something different with a mule ride into the arroyos with local rancheros. Learn about the local way of life of a Mexican cowboy.

Bahia Magdalena - A picturesque bay, Bahia Magdalena is especially great for sightings of gray whales.

Ensenada Grande - With its white sandy shore lapped by the shimmering sea, Ensenada Grande is a photogenic spot, terrific for a short, relaxing sunbathing session. Cacti grow from the red rocks, and colorful fish swim through the waters. You can also enjoy hiking in the desert-like landscapes.

Isla San Francisco - Many Baja California cruises stop at Isla San Francisco, a small island in the Gulf of California. Admire the curved bay and see various reptiles roaming the land.

Isla Espiritu Santo - A UNESCO-listed island, Isla Espiritu Santo is one of La Paz’s barrier islands. Home to pretty bays and a desert climate, it is one of the richest land ecosystems you can enjoy from a Sea of Cortez cruise. Unique creatures that live on the island include ground squirrels, black jackrabbits, and ring-tailed cats. You’re also sure to see lizards, and birds, and the waters are home to sea lions, turtles, dolphins, whales, and more.

Los Islotes - If you’ve ever dreamt of swimming with sea lions, Los Islotes could make your dreams come true. Seeing these splendid marine creatures basking on the craggy rocks and swimming through the sea is also a fabulous experience.

Cabo Pulmo - A spectacular national marine park, Cabo Pulmo is one of the best places for diving on an adventure cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. Boasting the oldest coral reef on North America’s western coast, the biodiversity and underwater scenery is sure to impress.

Active Adventures - Get active and join in with varied adventurous options, including exploring the waters by kayak and skiff (small rowing boat), hiking on the islands and peninsula, and trying your hand at paddle boarding. If certified, strap on a dive tank to explore the watery depths for a treasure trove of delights, or stay close to the surface and enjoy a spot of snorkeling.

Wildlife Encounters - The Sea of Cortez is known for its varied ecology, with myriad creatures calling the waters home, not to mention the land-dwelling animals and birds. Whale species that you may be lucky enough to spot include blue whales, gray whales, humpback whales, pilot whales, fin whales, sperm whales, and the mighty orcas. Bottlenose and common dolphins swimming alongside your cruise vessel are enchanting sights, whilst seeing enormous whale sharks is sure to excite. Don’t worry; these gentle giants may look ferocious, but they are completely harmless to humans.

Other creatures to look for in the waters include sea lions, manta rays, and mobula rays. The deadly Humboldt squid lurks in the sea, nicknamed the Red Demon by local fishermen, along with sea turtles, octopus, grouper, triggerfish, jawfish, tuna, balloonfish, tuna, and many more. It’s certainly no wonder that the sea has been called the “world’s aquarium”!

Avid bird watchers will be pleased by the amount of feathered creatures in the area. Pelicans, doves, hawks, woodpeckers, gulls, wrens, swifts, mockingbirds, petrels, herons, hummingbirds, terns, egrets, vultures, and sparrows are just a few birds that you may see or hear on your expedition. Iguanas and other lizards scuttle across the land, and mammals include deer, coyotes, rabbits, and prairie dogs.

Top Tips for visiting the Sea Of Cortez on a cruise

  • Slap on mosquito repellent and wear long clothing to avoid bites, particularly if visiting during the wettest months of August and September.
  • Don’t forget your underwater camera or GoPro for capturing the fantastic underwater sights or snapping the perfect selfie while surrounded by many marine life.
  • Although usually provided by your cruise boat, take your own snorkeling gear to ensure a comfortable fit.

Best time to cruise the Sea Of Cortez

The best time to take a Sea of Cortez cruise depends on your interests. A beautiful year-round destination, December to April is the best time to see whales. January to April is the high season for Sea of Cortez holidays in Mexico, and July to September are the hottest months. August and September are generally the rainiest months, too. If you can bear the hot temperatures Sea of Cortez cruises in the summer are a great time to spot elephant seals, iguanas, blue-footed boobies, turtles, and lizards. Autumn is also good for wildlife spotting, with the added benefit of lower temperatures. Plan ahead and visit in October or November to beat the crowds.

Where do Sea Of Cortez cruises depart from?

Mexico small ship cruises to the Sea of Cortez generally depart from La Paz, the state capital of Mexico’s Baja California Sur, or San Jose del Cabo, located on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. You can reach each destination by air, arriving at Manuel Marquez de Leon International Airport (LAP) or Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) respectively. Regular flights connect each airport to domestic destinations, like Mexico City and Cancun, and international airports, including a variety in the USA.

The Puerto Los Cabos at San Jose del Cabo is a major gateway to the Sea of Cortez. The port is just a short 20-minute drive from the airport. La Paz’s port is also an easy drive from the city’s airport.

You can fly directly to San Jose del Cabo from, for example, LA, San Francisco, San Diego, Houston, Chicago, Seattle, New York, Denver, Atlanta, Detroit, and Washington, DC; many non-stop direct flights connect with the USA. However, a flight change will be needed if you plan to fly into La Paz.

7 Best Wildlife Cruises Around the World

There’s a reason animal lovers flock to the open water—and a wildlife cruise provides the perfect vantage point.

Like a safari by sea, wildlife cruises let travelers admire animals in their natural habitats. Sometimes, it’s a top-deck dolphin spotting. Other times, it’s observing a distant polar bear. It’s about more than just  one  animal sighting, though. The best wildlife cruises include multiple unscripted fauna encounters—something I learned on a recent Galapagos eco-cruise with World Expeditions.

In just one week at sea, we snorkeled with sea turtles and sea lions, watched a blue-footed booby mating dance, visited a Galapagos giant tortoise breeding and rehabilitation center, and sat awestruck as a pint-sized Galapagos penguin mouth-fed her crying baby on the volcanic Bartolomé Island shore. Distant manta rays leaping during the ship’s sunset repositioning were a jaw-dropping cherry on top.

Sharing waterways with wildlife is awe-inspiring, but it comes with an important responsibility: protecting these pristine ecosystems. The cruise industry has a  notoriously large carbon footprint , but it’s slowly responding to travelers’ growing  sustainability demands . In 2022, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) shared new eco-initiatives, including a push for net-zero carbon cruising by 2050. The industry still has  a long way to go , but some trailblazing brands have made impressive sustainability strides. Take Norwegian adventure company  Hurtigruten , which launched the first hybrid electric-powered cruise ship in 2019. It aims to launch a zero-emission ship by 2030.

From eco-conscious Arctic voyages to small-ship Galapagos trips expeditions, here are seven of the world’s best overnight wildlife cruises—including the species you’ll see, and measures the operator has in place to protect them.

Watch whales, polar bears, and musk oxen in the Arctic

Iceland, greenland, and canada — the northwest passage with hurtigruten.

Arctic fauna abounds throughout the northwest passage, a sea trail that links the Pacific and Atlantic via the Canadian Arctic. A  19-day northwest passage cruise with Hurtigruten covers a portion of this wild expanse, as well as the coasts of Greenland and Iceland. From Hurtigruten’s 318-person  MS Fram expedition vessel , you could spot musk ox, caribou, minke and humpback whales, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive polar bear. The trip’s excursions include RIB boat rides, hiking, and citizen science programs.

The trip’s vessel, MS Fram, promises relaxation and enrichment. There’s a science center to learn about Arctic geology, the ship’s gym to get a sweat in between excursions, or hot tubs to watch for wildlife while unwinding. The recently updated boat features two restaurants plus an outdoor barbecue. The 125 cabins and suites include four classes, from polar inside to top-deck expedition suites with sweeping window views.

While any travel to remote regions like the Arctic leaves a carbon footprint, cruising with Hurtigruten is perhaps the best responsible-travel option. The brand supports give-back projects globally, including programs that provide safe spaces for vulnerable children in Greenland. It was also the first company to ditch non-essential single-use plastic in 2018.

Admire rare species in the mighty Amazon

Peruvian amazon — peruvian rivers & rainforest discovery with uniworld.

Imagine gliding alongside pink dolphins in the Amazon River or eavesdropping on critter calls on a  night safari in the jungle. These are among the many experiences on  Uniworld’s Peruvian Amazon wildlife cruise . The 11-day trip winds from Iquitos, the Amazon’s largest city, to the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, where the powerful Amazon River begins. Excursions feature a host of bucket-list wildlife experiences, including jungle hikes and skiff-boat rides.

The trip’s 16-stateroom ship promises an intimate Amazon experience, with floor-to-ceiling windows, ensuite bathrooms and walk-in showers, spacious lounge areas, an observation deck, and a top-level hot tub. Families or groups can enjoy four interconnecting suites, while fully air-conditioned accommodations are a welcome treat. Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin

Galapagos islands, ecuador — galapagos on solaris by world expeditions.

The  Galapagos Islands are a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. On a seven-day naturalist-led Galapagos cruise with  outfitter World Expeditions , you’ll become immersed in the rare flora and fauna, with the brand’s signature adventure twist. Guests can snorkel among sea turtles, sharks, and stingrays; hike by sunbathing sea lions; and visit the Cerro Colorado Tortoise Protection and Growing Centre.

On board, travelers can enjoy a rooftop deck for lounging, a dining area for buffet breakfast and lunch, and a plated dinner. The first-class Solaris yacht features a mix of queen-bed and single-bed cabins; all come with ocean views and private bathrooms. Travelers access the Galapagos for land-based outings via small RIB boats, with several hours on shore with two land stops per day.

Tourism to the Galapagos has more than quadrupled in the past two decades. While park officials enforce strict wildlife protection rules, including heavily regulated land visits, it’s important to keep your footprint as light as possible. A small-ship and carbon-offset trip, like this 16-passenger adventure, fits this criterion. The team also supports local communities by purchasing local fare, including seafood from local fishers and bread from an island baking cooperative.

Spot whales with Alaska’s only Indigenous-owned cruise line

Southeast alaska — ultimate glacier bay, wilderness, and wildlife with alaskan dream cruises.

People travel far and wide to enjoy the prolific fauna along Alaska’s Inside Passage, a wildlife-dense amalgam of fjords, glaciers, coastal towns, and an archipelago of more than 1,000 islands through the state’s panhandle. The best outfitter for taking it all in:  Alaskan Dream Cruises , the country’s only  Indigenous-owned cruise line .

If you’ve dreamed about whale watching in Alaska, sign up for the seven-night  Glacier Bay expedition , where you’ll not only admire the enormous creatures but listen to them communicate via the shipboard hydrophones. The adventure starts in mountain-flanked Sitka and ends in Juneau. Excursions include kayaking among cliffs and alongside rainforests, skiff-boat rides along the whale-abundant Glacier Bay, and later to watch puffins, sea lions, and, if you’re lucky, bears. The vessel,  Kruzof Explorer , includes six staterooms with windows and a main deck for wildlife scouting. This upcycled crab fishing boat has a central dining room and bar for gathering and plotting the next day’s activities.

Travelers can feel confident their trip supports the local community and ecosystem; Alaskan Dream Cruises runs small-ship outings (around 12 passengers per trip), offers no single-use plastics, and increasingly invests in solar panels for sustainable power.

Zimbabwe, zambia, namibia, botswana — southern africa riverboat safari with natural habitat adventures.

Fall asleep to the sound of hippos, wake up to the rustle of feeding elephants. The  11-day Natural Habitat Adventures riverboat adventure through southern Africa is a unique take on the African safari. It’s a hybrid boat-land expedition, with three nights on an upscale riverboat, followed by a week on a traditional land-based safari. While on the 14-person boat, you’ll explore Lake Kariba, which is packed with the region’s wildlife: hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and fish eagles. The land-based trip portion includes stops at Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest protected area, and Victoria Falls.

In addition to daytime excursions, from boating to 4x4 safaris, guests will enjoy relaxation via upscale accommodations throughout the journey. Overnights include the Zimbabwean Dream riverboat, where all eight suites come with floor-to-ceiling windows and access to a top-deck pool and scenic restaurant; the regal, five-star Victoria Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe; baobab-flanked chalets at Namibia’s Kaza Safari Lodge; and waterhole-view Davison’s Camp in Zimbabwe’s remote Hwange National Park.

Sustainability-wise, NatHab carbon offsets each traveler’s journey. It’s also the World Wildlife Fund’s travel partner, which means naturalist guides and WWF scientists work together to share education about the ecosystems you are admiring—and how to protect them.
