SALT LAKE CITY — From rescued cougar cubs to a baby gorilla expected to arrive this summer, there are exciting things happening at Utah's Hogle Zoo.
On Friday, the zoo announced that Pele, a Western lowland gorilla, is expecting. She's about six months along and due in June or July. Pele was paired with Hogle Zoo resident Husani, a 32-year-old silverback.
The two gorillas are part of a breeding program called the Gorilla Species Survival Plan. The program was designed to provide a healthy, genetically diverse gorilla population.
"Gorillas, in particular, are critically endangered, so by participating in (the species survival plan) and having babies here at the zoo, we're able to contribute to a population that's dwindling in the wild," said Hannah Comstock, the animal care supervisor of primates for Utah's Hogle Zoo.
The zoo staff said Pele and the baby are doing well. They showed one of her recent ultrasounds online, where you can see the baby gorilla's feet.
Comstock said the ultrasound is a major milestone in Pele's pregnancy because she's become comfortable with the staff, allowing them to use the machine to look at her belly and see the baby.
New rescued cougars arrive
In addition to Pele's exciting news, the zoo has also introduced three new rescued cougars.
"It's our first trio in years, and it's our first wild cougar from Utah," said Bob Cisneros, associate director of animal care at Hogle Zoo.
Rafael, the native Utah cougar, arrived at the zoo in January from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
"A mountain lion in a neighbor county was shot and killed by a rancher, and neighbors found the cub," Cisneros said.
Liam and Mara, sibling cougars, came from Nebraska. Their mother was shot and killed by a permitted hunter, leaving the two orphaned and unable to survive on their own.
"When you look at them, you'll definitely see some differences. The two mountain lions that we have from Nebraska were left out in the snow for a moment, and so they suffered frostbite to the ears as well as frostbite to the tail," said Cisneros.
In a few weeks, the cougars will move into their new home in the Wild Utah habitat, which will open to the public in May. While in the habitat, the cougars will become wildlife ambassadors and will be used to teach about wildlife conservation.
"We get to use them as ambassadors and provide that connection to wildlife that is so strong when it's in your own backyard," Cisneros said.
The last time Utah's Hogle Zoo had cougars was in 2012 when cougars Kota and Echo were in residency. The pair came to the zoo in 2006 and later moved to St. Louis.
"What I love about these cats, mostly, is that we're not talking about lions. We're not talking about snow leopards. We're not talking about animals thousands of miles away, but we're really talking about our predators in our own backyard," Cisneros said.
Cisneros said the trio of cougars are still considered cubs because they're under 2 years old. He said they each weigh about 90 pounds but will grow to about 110 to 125 pounds.
According to the zoo, visitors will find them most active during the evenings and early morning hours.

Very family friendly place! Great way to kill an afternoon, we got here at 2 left before closing at 5:30. Our 6 year old didn't get tired until the very end of our trip, it's not a giant zoo. There's a diaper changing room at the entrance so you don't have to wait in a line for the bathroom. Food was expensive and lines were too long but we brought our own drinks and snacks anyways. The carousel was super cute and they have benches so I happily sat down with my baby instead of having to trade and switch to sit down or just watch. Expect to pay about $20-30 per souvenir. You totally get your moneys worth for $20 a person, and of course baby got in free.
Utah's Hogle Zoo was an incredible mix of animals, between land and sea. I really enjoyed the meerkats (they even pose for you!!), and the gorillas exhibit. The zoo feels as though it was incorporated into the stunning mountains around it, which was breathtaking. Also enjoyed how much walking you could do throughout the zoo. Had a great time here!

It's amazing to read the old reviews and realize how much has changed (for the worse). Prices are WAY up, quality is way down. We're regulars--live nearby and have a pass--so we go 2-3x a month. To us the zoo is basically a nice park with a few animals. Now that the elephants are gone it is a long walk between something to see. Hogle Zoo used to be remarkable. I've been to zoos on five continents, and during the pandemic my favorite activity was to watch zoo-360 tours on YouTube with my baby. (I highly recommend Singapore btw.) But Hogle Zoo's bird show really set them apart. It was truly world-class--the kind of epic experience kids will never forget. But they got greedy and forced out the creator, which killed the whole thing. Tragedy. Now they have a dog show. I am not kidding. A *dog* show. DOGS. At a zoo! Pretty soon they'll build a goldfish exhibit. I am also the opposite of excited about the "local animals" exhibit. That is what nature is for people! That is NOT what a zoo is for. A zoo is supposed to expose people to animals that they could never get to see normally. My dad still talks about the liger they had when he was little. Now they want to charge almost $100 for a family of four to see the same animals that eat their garden in the backyard. Boo zoo. Boo. Update after their response: I completely understand why Christie and Zuri (the elephants) had to leave. Sad for us, but good for the species overall. The rub is that the zoo has said that they don't plan on replacing them. Everything I said was accurate. More money for fewer and less exotic animals.

Hi Patrice! We appreciate your review and your support as a zoo membership holder. I would love to elaborate on some of your concerns and hopefully provide some context. Starting with the new Wild Utah exhibit opening this spring, we want to be champions for all wildlife, and the goal of the exhibit is to highlight native Utah species, like cougars and badgers, that guests probably don't want to see in their backyard, and also how to stay safe should guests encounter these species in the wild. We hope you'll consider giving the new exhibit a try when it opens this May! While the Bird Show was a staple for many guests' visits during its 25 year run, we wanted to try a new show called the Canine Champions for Conservation dog show that highlights how humans utilize dogs and their natural behaviors to help track and identify species for conservation efforts, all while showing off some unique talents and training. Lastly, in regards to the elephants leaving, we want to emphasize that this was a difficult decision, but the right decision for the species so that they might have the opportunity to start a family of their own within their prime reproductive years. Elephant populations are declining at a rapid rate and we want to be champions for this vital species by doing what we can to help. We hope their story will inspire action in our guests to understand that their ticket or membership goes toward benefiting local and global conservation efforts through our wildlife partners. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review and to share your zoo experience through the years. If you have additional feedback on how to improve the experience, feel free to reach out anytime at [email protected].
I would have never guessed that a snowy winter Sunday afternoon would be the best time to go to the zoo! The animals, particularly, all the large cats were the most active I've ever seen. The snow leopard was doing parkour, the tigers were singing, and the watching the seal and sea lion exhibit go through their daily enrichment exercises was incredible to see! I hadn't been to the zoo in ages, and it was really nice to see all the improvements that have been made to give the high percentage of rescue animals here, a more enriching and comfortable life in their exhibits. Also... the zoo was empty on the snowy Sunday, no toddlers, no crowds. This made for a 5/5 experience!
The Sea Lions go through daily enrichment exercises. They are totally the puppy dogs of the sea! Great way to socialize the animals.
Snow Leopard Exhibit
Ok it's kinda unfair cuz I've been to the San Diego Zoo and FREE zoos that are better : Lincoln Park (Chicago) and the best ever free zoo in St. Louis-- so this zoo would be a let down if comparing to those. But... it is a fine zoo. :) Especially for the little ones. My teens are kind of hard to impress. Haha. The big thing I want to say is that I do give an extra star (hence the 4 star review) to the fact that the Hogle Zoo Truly supports the military community! They give FREE admission to the military member and their WHOLE IMMEDIATE FAMILY TOO- 3 days a year: Armed Forces Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. Now that is truly generous of them so it bumped up my 3 star review of me stating this was an "average zoo". Thank you so much Hogle Zoo owners who really support the Military community!

Haven't been to this zoo since I've lived in Utah. Really awesome park. Appreciate how well they care for the grounds. Really like their cafe. Went there for coffee and tea, but they have a section for pizza, right outta the oven. Staff is very friendly.

I have been to many zoos. And although this zoo is a little on the smaller side, it is big in everything else!! The giraffe feeding was not too pricey and my little brother loved it because they are his favorite animal! They offer a train ride in the zoo which may help for those who can not move as far on their own. The animals were very active and it was not too busy.
Giraffe feeding
I'm in the military so I am very impressed with how the Hogle Zoo gives the military members and their Immediate family free entrance to the zoo 3 times a year: Armed Forces Day, July 4th & Veteran's Day. We went last month on Veteran's Day last month. We have lived in Utah for over 12 yrs now so we have been several times thanks to these Military Free Days. We were disappointed this last time however because the Elephants are gone! They were moved to another zoo to be with a herd. So there's this really nice elephant statue before you get to the Elephant section but no more elephants. There's plenty to see at this zoo, even a couple Red Panda's which is my son's favorite. It's not a big zoo of course but it's big enough. It's a great place to take younger kids. There's a cool play area in there, a dog show showcasing the tricks they can do, a carousel (extra fee) , a little train (extra fee).
Some of my earliest memories are of coming to this zoo. Fast forward 20 years, and I'm not bringing my own toddler to this zoo. It's pretty much exactly as I've remembered it. It's not the biggest zoo you'll go to, but it's got a little bit of everything. I do wish there were more animal experiences. I've been to similarly sized zoos that have all sorts of animal feeding opportunities and team members standing at the exhibits ready to tell you all the information that you'd like. The "beastro" here is actually pretty good! All the food I've had (I typically get a burger) is higher quality than I'd expect, albeit fairly pricey. There is also a cloud ninth ice creamery, and if you havent tried cloud ninth, it's a must!
Tiny enclosures, animals look so unhappy. The leopard looks super stressed out and the larger ape looks depressed. But the administration building sure looked nice and new, so at least they're comfortable in their offices. This was probably one of the most depressing zoos my family has ever visited.

Hi Cassandra, thank you for leaving a review and we appreciate your concern and interest in animal wellbeing and behaviors. Behavior and mental health are complex for animals just like humans. All animals, wild or zoo born, have individual personalities, preferences, and sometimes behavioral quirks. Utah’s Hogle Zoo is one of only 10% of organizations that are AZA accredited. Our entire animal care staff are well-trained, well-educated professionals in the field of exotic animal care and husbandry. They are very familiar with each animals' behavioral needs and make daily decisions on how best to promote their wellbeing in the best, most effective ways. Animal Care and Health staff use science to try and determine what stimulates these less than ideal behaviors and what we can do to best redirect them more effectively. Zoo keepers provide enrichment and training several times per day, working hard ensure that even though some individuals might have some quirky habits, they are healthy and well taken care of. If you have more questions about animal wellbeing and behaviors, visit our website at https://www.hoglezoo.org/wellbeing/ or reach out to [email protected].

New Utah-focused exhibit comes to Hogle Zoo
‘the wonders in our backyards’ setting will provide hands-on learning about native wildlife.
By Emma Everett Johnson , KSL.com
Hogle Zoo’s new Aline W. Skaggs Wild Utah exhibit opened Thursday, giving visitors a chance to discover “the wonder in our backyards,” zoo president and CEO Doug Lund said.
Barton the porcupine officially welcomed zoo visitors Thursday by chomping through a ribbon made out of biscuits. People flocked into the highly interactive Utah-focused exhibit.
The three-acre indoor and outdoor exhibit houses native wildlife such as cougars, badgers, desert bighorn sheep, gray foxes, skunks and more.
It also provides hands-on opportunities where children and adults can explore a campsite, help prepare food at an animal-care kitchen and decorate wooden houses for local birds, bees and bats.
“You will be awestruck when you see what’s in here, and the education that goes alongside it,” said Justin Shirley, director of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
The exhibit’s opening also marks the return of the zoo’s train, which stopped services in August 2022 and is now a zero-emissions electric locomotive.
Wild Utah has been in the works for five years and reflects a desire to showcase animals native to Utah, Lund said.
“As our population grows, we need to really have that respect and admiration for the animals we’re sharing space with,” he said.
In Lund’s view, people are all a part of a collective — just like a hive of honey bees. This vision of working together for a balanced ecosystem inspired the zoo to collaborate with artist Matt Willey, who painted a mural of some of his signature honey bees for the new exhibit.
The mural is the latest in Willey’s ongoing project to paint 50,000 honey bees around the world. So far he’s painted 11,000, and the Hogle Zoo bees are his first in Utah.
The zoo hopes the entire exhibit will show visitors how to “live and recreate safely with wildlife,” Lund said. Aline W. Skaggs, the exhibit’s namesake, was a champion of this.
“Mom was always making sure the bird feeders were full, the hummingbirds had plenty of nectar and the raccoons had their share of peanuts,” said Claudia Luttrell, a daughter of L. Sam and Aline W. Skaggs.
And the zoo isn’t just asking visitors to take care of the environment — they’re doing their own part to be environmental stewards.
“The zoo used to be one of the largest water users (in Utah),” marketing and public relations manager Rachael Eames said. In the last 20 years, it has made some changes. The facility, which operates on 42 acres of donated hillside, no longer drains its large pools every day, instead, using human divers to clean tough-to-reach spots. In its newest exhibit, solar panels power the train, Eames said.
“We’re really trying to learn from other zoos,” she said.
For local officials, the zoo is worth protecting. Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson asked county residents to vote for the Zoo, Arts and Parks fund, which is back on the ballot this year.
Lund echoed Wilson’s appeal for local support: “Most of the money (for this exhibit) came from zoo operations.”
For tickets, hours and more information about the exhibit, visit the zoo’s site .

Conservation and Education Zoo Idaho is dedicated to preserving intermountain west wildlife and habitat through conservation and education. It plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of wildlife preservation.
Rehabilitation of Non-releasable Wildlife The zoo provides a home for non-releasable wildlife that would otherwise struggle to survive in the wild. This helps in maintaining biodiversity and preventing the unnecessary loss of animal lives.
Partnership with Idaho Fish and Game The collaboration with Idaho Fish and Game ensures that Zoo Idaho is aligned with state wildlife management efforts, contributing to the overall well-being of Idaho’s wildlife.
