8 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR MONEY WHEN TRAVELING

Going on vacation should be a relaxing and enjoyable time. After all, you get to see new and exciting places, disconnect from the mundane of everyday life, and maybe experience new things.

Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to stand out as a tourist and let our guards down. When you do, you make yourself the perfect prey to pickpockets and thieves. Even worse, is that we often realize this after the fact, after the damage is done and our finances and identity have been compromised.

Thankfully, there are preventative measures you can take to protect your money and personal information. Instead of having your trip ruined, try these eight ways to protect your money when traveling.

1. Let Your Bank Know

Before leaving on vacation anywhere, it’s always a good idea to alert your bank and credit card companies beforehand. Let them know where you’re going and how long you’ll be gone for.

This way, the banks won’t deem any purchases you make while traveling as “unusual activity”. When this happens, your cards will be frozen and you might find yourself without money. Moreover, it may make your bank jump into action quicker should your cards get stolen or lost while you’re gone.

2. Go with the Bare Minimum

During your normal, everyday activities, you likely carry an array of items in your wallet. You probably have multiple credit and debit cards, cash, and multiple forms of ID. However, if you’ll be traveling, it’s a good idea to travel a little more lightly.

Bring only the forms of currency you know you’ll actually use and be sure to leave any document that has your social security number on it at home. If you do bring your debit card, it may also be a good idea to store it safely in another spot. If that gets stolen, your account is highly compromised.

3. Make Copies

Before heading off on your trip, make sure make copies of all your important documents. Have extras of your driver’s license, passport, and even your credit and debit cards. It may also be a good idea to write down your account number and the contact information for your bank. Leave a copy of these items with a friend or family member and email a set to yourself. That way, if something does happen, you’ll be able to prove your identity and quickly cancel anything that was stolen.

4. Don’t Keep Everything in One Place

While you’d normally keep all your currency and identification in one place, you may want to think twice when you’re traveling. This is especially true when it comes to cash.

Store some cash in your wallet and keep the rest in a safe place, think the safe in your hotel room. That way if you do get pick pocketed, everything won’t be lost. That being said, however, be sure not to leave any cash in your checked luggage. If it gets lost, you’ll be out that amount.

5. Be Wary of ATMS

If you find yourself in need of cash while traveling, it’s important to make yourself wary of where you get it. Steer clear of stand-alone ATMs that aren’t located in or near a bank, as they’re more easily surveyed and tampered with.

Furthermore, always be sure to carefully examine the ATM as well. Make sure nothing looks loose, altered, or broken on the machine. That could be a sign that it’s been tampered with.

6. Opt for Credit Cards

Your debit card is a direct access to your bank account, which is why it greatly puts you at risk if it’s stolen. Thieves would have immediate access to your account. Plus, it can take a much longer period of time to have your money reimbursed. And you’ll be without access to the account should it be compromised.

This is why you should opt to use a credit card instead. They’re generally safer when traveling since the money won’t immediately be withdrawn from your account, and they tend to have better legal protection as well.

7. Opt for Alerts

This is generally a good idea even for every day monitoring to protect your money. However, if you haven’t signed up to receive alerts on your account, definitely do so before traveling. By doing so, you’ll be alerted via text or email of irregular activity or when a transaction has been made that’s higher than a certain amount. You’ll be able to keep a watchful eye on your account and be able to immediately alert the bank should fraudulent activity take place. All in all, account alerts can help you drastically keep any possible financial damage at bay.

8. Don’t Leave Valuables Vulnerable

Whenever you’re traveling, always err on the side of caution. Don’t put your wallet in an obvious and easily obtainable place, such as your back pocket or the front pocket of your purse. It may be a good idea to carry a money belt in lieu of a wallet or purse to ensure your money’s safety. Always make sure it’s somewhere a thief couldn’t easily get to it.

Moreover, if you do leave items in your hotel room, be careful as to where you keep them. Don’t leave all your cash and cards in one spot or in the same pocket of your bag. Lock it up in the safe or find a better place to put it. Or, you could opt to divide it up and carry it discretely on your body.

It may seem like a hassle to take a lot of precautions when traveling, but you’ll be glad you did. While having your information or financial materials stolen never seems like it’ll happen to you, it’s unfortunately all too easy for some thieves, and in an instant all your valuables could be gone. Don’t let yourself fall victim to a pickpocket. Take the proper precautions and always be aware of your surroundings. By doing so, you’ll put your mind at ease and be able to fully enjoy your vacation.

The Ultimate Cash Back card from Santander Bank review

The Ultimate Cash Back card from Santander Bank review

Written by: Robin Ratcliff

  • Balance Transfer

In a Nutshell:

The introductory period for balance transfers on the Santander Ultimate Cash Back Mastercard is short, though you can save money on your transfer thanks to the card’s lack of a balance transfer fee.

Other Notable Features:  No foreign transaction fee, no cash advance fee, no balance transfer fee, no fee for returned checks, car rental insurance, extended warranty, purchase protection, price protection, roadside assistance, travel assistance, $0 liability

With a run-of-the-mill earning scheme and sign-up bonus, plus limited redemption options, the rewards program on the Santander Ultimate Cash Back Mastercard is far from impressive.

The no annual fee Ultimate Cash Back card from Santander bank is a recent entry to the cash back card category and – for anyone who has been paying attention lately to cash back cards – it comes with familiar-looking terms: It offers 1.5 percent unlimited cash back on all purchases.

The market is already teeming with 1.5 percent flat-rate cards, and the Santander card does little to distinguish itself from the rabble. It does include the unique proposition of not charging fees for many transactions, such as cash advances and balance transfers, though cash advances and balance transfers are probably of little interest to cardholders who primarily want a card to earn cash back rewards.

It’s also notable that Santander Bank is a new face in the cash back card category. The bank, which is based out of Madrid and includes a corporate branch in Boston, primarily targets customers in the northeastern part of the U.S., including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Average rewards rate

Santander touts the Ultimate Cash Back card as “the most straightforward card on the market,” and for customers interested in ease-of-use, it certainly offers that: The card gives you 1.5 percent cash back on every purchase, with no bonus categories to enroll in or keep track of.

If you prefer to invest minimal effort into your credit card use, a 1.5 percent cash back is a pretty decent return, though you can do better. For instance, the Citi Double Cash® Card offers up to 2 percent cash back on all your purchases – 1 percent as you buy and another 1 percent as you pay for your purchases.

Average sign-up bonus

The Ultimate Cash Back card also offers a $100 sign-up bonus to new cardholders who spend at least $500 on the card within 90 days of activating the card. Again, this is par for the course. Many 1.5 percent cash back cards come with a $100 sign-up bonus, and some cards offer even better rewards.

Flexible redemption options

The Ultimate Cash Back card is very flexible when it comes to redeeming your rewards. Your rewards don’t expire, and you can redeem any amount at any time. Plus, the card comes with a fair array of redemption options: Not only can you redeem your rewards for cash back, but you also have the option to redeem them for gift cards and merchandise. Unfortunately, there is no way to get cash back except as a credit to your card statement, so you can’t put the rewards toward savings. Also, there are no travel rewards options on the Ultimate Cash Back card.

One plus is that you can transfer your rewards to other Santander bank cards, including the Sphere and Bravo cards, at a 1:1 rate. If you already have a Sphere card (which only offers 1 point per dollar of spending) or a Bravo card (which only offers a bonus on supermarket, gas and restaurant purchases) and are trying to build up more points on these cards, you can use the Ultimate Cash Back card to accumulate rewards at a higher rate on your general spending, and then transfer them.

No fees for many transactions

As mentioned above, the Ultimate Cash Back card offers no fees on many types of transactions, including foreign transactions, balance transfers, cash advances and returned payments.

The lack of a foreign transaction fee is a very valuable feature. If you use the card while traveling abroad, you don’t have to worry about incurring a 2 to 3 percent fee on each of your transactions.

The lack of a fee on cash advances and returned payments is more questionable in value. For consumers who manage credit responsibly, these types of transactions are probably rare. In general, we only recommend cash advances in emergencies, because, unlike regular charges, cash advances don’t have a grace period. This means that, even without the cash advance fee, you will end up owing money on the transaction, since you start incurring interest on the amount the moment it is posted to your account.

The lack of a balance transfer fee is also questionable in value. If you are planning to collect cash back rewards, we generally don’t recommend carrying a balance on a card. And, if your intention is to transfer and pay off a balance, you can find many cards, such as the Chase Slate card, that offer a 0 percent introductory APR on balance transfers, with no fee for transferring the balance and a longer period to pay it off. The Santander card, in contrast, offers a 3 percent introductory APR for 12 billing cycles for balance transfers made within 90 days of opening your account.

The usual Mastercard benefits

The Ultimate Cash Back card comes with the usual array of Mastercard purchase and travel protections, including car rental insurance, extended warranty, purchase protection and price protection.

Why get the Ultimate Cash Back card?

  • You want to put all your spending on one card that is easy to manage.
  • You already have a relationship with Santander bank.
  • You want to collect a large sign-up bonus from a card that you haven’t previously signed up for.

How to use the Ultimate Cash Back card:

  • Use this card to earn a high cash back rate on all your everyday spending.
  • Spend at least $500 in the first 90 days to earn the card’s sign-up bonus.
  • Be sure to log in to your account on a regular basis to redeem your rewards for statement credits.

The belle-époque elegance of El Sardinero aside, modern Santander is not the most beautiful of cities. A huge fire raged through the centre back in 1941, leaving little that’s old or quaint. Still, Cantabria’s capital is an engaging place, making the most of its setting along the northern side of the handsome Bahía de Santander, and the city's forward-facing outlook is epitomised in the striking modernist Centro Botín, which opened on the waterfront in mid-2017.

London travel news LIVE: Tube stations forced to shut as 24-hour strike hits the Underground

Several London Underground stations are closed due to workers striking while two Tube lines were halted because of a casualty on the track.

The union said the action was likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including into Saturday morning, but Transport for London said there will not be significant disruption.
