History of the Schwinn Le Tour

It’s the early 1970s and bicycles are booming.  Lightweight road bikes are becoming very popular, and Schwinn doesn’t have one that’s more affordable.  They have the Paramount, but it’s a very expensive bike.  The Varsity and Continental are close to 40lbs, but they still sell well.  Paramounts are made in Waterford Wisconsin and that facility certainly doesn’t have the capacity to start making budget road bikes.  Chicago was already very busy making their current models, and they didn’t make lugged frame bikes.  What did they decide to do? 

To get into the affordable lightweight market they decided to import from Japan like many of the competition.  They were very cautious about an import Schwinn because the first two bikes are the World Traveler and World Voyageur in 1972 and 1973.  Very nice bikes from Japan, but they barely have a reference to Schwinn on them and are not in the catalog.  They even use a different World badge.  This experiment must have gone well because in 1974 they introduce the Schwinn approved Le Tour, an affordable lugged frame bike that’s about 30lbs.  They are still cautious as it’s Schwinn approved rather than just a Schwinn, but it has lots of great Schwinn and Le Tour branding.  It must have been a pretty good seller as they go on to offer it through 1992 and brought it back off and on through 2011. 

It has had many variations during its long run including the Super Le Tour, Le Tour Luxe, and Le Tour Tourist.  The Super was definitely the most popular of the variations and ran from 1976-1985.  It started as an upgraded Le Tour with aluminum rims, downtube shifters, and only 26.5 lbs.  By 1985 the Le Tour and Super had gotten very close in quality, so I believe that is likely why they stopped the Super.  Both had alloy rims, downtube shifters, chromoly frames, and similar weights.

1974 Le Tour

Schwinn started offering the Le Tour in 1974, and it was a little different for the iconic Chicago based bicycle company.  The Le Tour was made in Japan by Panasonic, with Schwinn approved branding.  So, it’s branded by USA Schwinn, made by Japan Panasonic, and it’s got a French name.  How cool is that?  Everybody should want to own one of these. 

Based on pricing it was 3 rd in the Schwinn lineup behind the Paramount and Sports Tourer with a suggested retail price of $159.95.  It was also quite a bit lighter than any of the cheaper Schwinn models.

What I love about these bikes is all the great branding.  The 1974 has Le Tour branded derailleurs and seat post, plus lots of other Schwinn and Shimano branding.  Its my only bike with model specific derailleurs. Later years have Le Tour branded saddles and cranks.

Here are some of the specs according to the 1974 catalog:

Lightweight, fully lugged brazes frame with butted top and bottom tubes.

Quick release aluminum alloy hubs.

Aluminum alloy crank set

Center pull alloy caliper brakes

27” x 1 ¼” gumwall tires

Only 30-32 lbs depending on the size and kickstand.  (some models at the time were around 40lbs)

The derailleurs are made by Shimano and are similar in quality to their 500.  These are Le Tour GT-400 for the rear and Le Tour GT-450 for the front.

Bars and stem are alloy.  Rims are steel.   

Came in 3 sizes:

LT1: 21” (31” standover height)

LT3: 23”

LT5: 25”

Colors: Opaque blue, Opaque red, and Kool Lemon.

1975 Le Tour

In 1975 a Le Tour for ladies was added to the catalog.  Rest of the bike stays mostly unchanged.  The rear derailleur changes to the GT-420 and the catalog changes from kool lemon to yellow.  I prefer calling it kool lemon.  Catalog notes that the saddle is Taihei racing style.

Ladies sizes:

L-69: 19”

L-72: 22”

1976 Le Tour

Remains mostly unchanged from the 75 model, except the saddle changes to Matex racing style. 

1976 Super Le Tour

This is the first year for the Super Le Tour.  An ultra-lightweight bike at a moderate price.  These had double butted chrome moly top and bottom tubes, alloy rims, downtube shifters, and Shimano 600 rear and 60 front derailleurs.  They took what was good about the standard Le Tour and made it a little better.  The 12.2 on the frame references the weight in kilograms. 26.5lbs.

Frame Finish: Sky blue, Flamboyant red or Silver Mist.

Same sizing as the Le Tour:

SL-1: 21”

SL-3: 23”

SL-5: 25”

Suggested retail price: $219.95

1977 Le Tour II

Most of the changes for this year appear to be visual with new decals and colors.  Catalog lists the weight as 29lbs. 

Colors are Scarlet, Violet, and Pearscent Orange. 

Suggested retail price is $164.95.

Le Tour II for ladies comes in the same colors and is listed as 31lbs.  Sizes are now L-89 for the 19” and L-92 for the 22” frame.

1977 Super Le Tour 12.2

The 77 SLT is mostly unchanged from the previous year, but now offers a SL-9 19” frame.  Colors are Sky blue, Silver Mist, and Full chrome ($50 extra)

Suggested retail price is $229.95

1978 Schwinn-Approved Le Tour III

A 27” frame is added, and the colors are changed.

L11: 21”

L13: 23”

L15: 25”

L17: 27”

Colors are pearl orange and pearl blue.

Ladies models:

L79: 19”

L82: 22”

Suggested retail price is $189.95

1978 Super Le Tour

Price is the biggest change from the 77 with a suggested retail price of $264.95.  Models also change slightly:

9SL: 19”

1SL: 21”

3SL: 23”

5SL: 25”

C is added to the end of the model to designate full chrome. 

Colors are Full chrome($50 extra), Scarlet, Black, and Silver Mist.

1979 Le Tour IV

Big changes this year as they started making them in Chicago.  They wanted to try and make an affordable road bike in the USA.

30lbs with kickstand

18 gauge 1020 carbon steel frame

Rear derailleur: Shimano 400

The SLT is also made in the USA and gets a little bit heavier as it no longer has a partial chrome moly frame, it’s all 1020 steel.  The derailleurs are also a bit of a downgrade from previous years.  It does change to a 12 speed.

Made in Chicago with unchanged specs and sizes from 1979.

This was Schwinn’s entry level road bike for this year. 21 speed drive train. Schwinn road design 7005 TIG welded aluminum frame with forged dropouts and cro-moly fork with forged dropouts. Shimano RSX downtube shifters and rear derailleur with T300 front derailleur. Nexave triple crank. Tektro 420AG brakes with Shimano levers. 32 hole Araya SP-30 rims with alloy hubs and 700×23 tires.

Suggested retail price: $499.00

2011 Le Tour Classic

This looks to be kind of a neat bike.  The paint scheme with the brown bar tape gives it a bit of an older look, maybe that’s how it got the classic name?  The original saddle would have also been brown, but it’s been replaced on this one.  Frame is actually Reynolds 520 chromoly which I wasn’t expecting.  Shifters and derailleurs are Shimano Sora.  I believe it came stock with 28mm tires so this should be a really comfortable ride. 2011 Le Tour Sport

This model had an aluminum frame with a carbon fork. Shifters are Shimano Sora with a Tiagra rear derailleur and a Sora front derailleur. FSA Vero triple crankset and SRAM 9 speed cassette completed the drivetrain. 700×25 Kenda Kriterium tires mounted on Xero Shawla 220 wheels.

Decoding the serial numbers of the Japanese made Le Tours is covered in the imported section below. The US made models use the limited production section. It is found on the rear dropout:

What are they worth?

The good news is that you should be able to find them rather affordably.  I’m in southeast Wisconsin and they can be had for $50-500 depending on the condition and model.  Most models in pretty good condition you should be able to get for around $100.  If you are picky about year and color, you might have to pay a bit more.  Nice Super Le Tours I often see for around $300, but if you aren’t picky and take some time looking can be found for much less.  The Le Tour Luxe however seems to be very rare and I usually see those more for $500.  The market on Ebay is usually quite a bit higher especially after shipping.  These are pretty common bikes so you will likely find a pretty good selection locally.  The value will vary a bit depending on where you are.  The above is true for the older steel lugged frame bikes.  For the newer ones into the 2000s I guess you should just check bicycle blue book for an idea as I rarely see these for sale. 

Most collectable

I think the Le Tours are really great as they are beautiful vintage bikes that can still be gotten for a good price. Here are some of my favorites, and those I think should be most collectible:

1974 – as this is the first year, all colors.

Yellow – Kool Lemon and Yellow were only offered for the first 3 years. And it’s a great yellow.

1976 Super Le Tour – this is the first year for the super. Really great bikes for the time, and still very fun to ride.

12.2 – all the 12.2 supers are really great bikes. Chromoly top and bottom tube, downtube shifters, alloy rims…

Chrome Supers – the all chrome supers were an additional cost. I haven’t seen many of them.

Le Tour Luxe – neat looking touring version made only from 1983-1985.

1985 Super Le Tour – 25lbs with all chromoly frame and Suntour Cyclone derailleurs. Last year for the super.

I always thought it was interesting that Schwinn bought enough to put “Schwinn-approved” on components rather than the manufacturer’s name (Huret derailleurs on the Varsity, Weinmann brakes on most bikes). I’ll still take my 1974 Motobecane Grand Jubilee over the Le Tour. $208 and Huret Jubilee derailleurs, aluminum rims, Reynolds frame. I had a friend with a chrome Paramount of that vintage – Campy Record-equipped. The spirit of Paramount lives on at Waterford Precision Cycles, founded by Richard Schwinn.

There are lots of great vintage bikes out there.

I once owned a metallic blue 1980 Le Tour. Seeing these photos makes me wish I would have had room to keep it.

I own a Schwinn ATB (MTB) that is date as 1981 by the serial number on the underside of the BB. The serial number is BS367823 as fitting into the Schwinn Chicago SN format. The frame is a lugged Ishiwata tubing and looks very much like the first Specialised MTB frame. I can post photos etc if required Regards Les

NBC Sports, Peacock and the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) today announced a six-year extension for exclusive U.S. media rights for the Tour de France.

Beginning with the 111 th Tour de France in June 2024, Peacock will become the exclusive home of the Tour de France in the United States through 2029 with live start-to-finish coverage of every stage . Select stages will also simulcast live on NBC throughout the three-week event. Daily coverage on Peacock will include NBC Sports-produced pre- and post-race studio shows, full-stage replays, highlights, stage recaps, rider interviews, and more.

As part of its previous agreement, NBC Sports and Peacock will present full live coverage of 110th Tour de France this summer (July 1-23, 2023). NBC Sports’ full coverage schedule for the 2023 Tour de France will be announced in the coming months.

“We’re excited to reach this long-term agreement with A.S.O. to present the world’s most prestigious cycling event live on Peacock for years to come,” said Jon Miller, President, Acquisitions and Partnerships, NBC Sports. “With the Tour de France and our extensive cycling portfolio, we are proud to continue as the home of cycling in the United States, while continuing to bolster Peacock’s best-in-class slate of live sports programming.”

“We are delighted to be able to extend our long-term partnership with NBCUniversal, which promotes the Tour de France and all the major A.S.O. sporting events to the American public on a cross-platform basis, including women’s cycling such as the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift that NBC Sports has supported since the first edition in July 2022. The combined coverage via Peacock, which will show the entire races from the beginning to the end, and network television, will ensure that everyone has access to the best of world cycling. Super fans won’t miss any of the twists and turns that cycling holds. NBC Sports will remain the home of cycling in the United States for another six years and in 2029 we will celebrate the 29th anniversary of a historic partnership that is proof of America’s sincere love for cycling and the Tour,” declared Yann Le Moenner, CEO of A.S.O.

As part of the agreement, NBC Sports will present many additional A.S.O. events throughout the year, including cycling events such as La Vuelta a España, which is the final Grand Tour event of the year following the Tour de France, La Vuelta Feminina by Carrefour.es, the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the Spring Classics including the men’s and women’s Paris-Roubaix, Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift, the Ardennaises Classics (men and women) that are La Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Criterium du Dauphine, and Paris Tours. Also included are the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris, the world’s second-largest marathon, and the Dakar Rally , the world’s most challenging off-road endurance race.

Comcast/NBC Sports has served as the U.S. home of the Tour de France since 2001.

Le Stade toulousain a remporté, après prolongation et grâce à une énorme défense, la finale de la Champions Cup, aux dépens de Leinster. Les événements sportifs qu'il ne fallait pas rater ce week-end : voici le Récap' sports de France 24.

Le Stade toulousain a remporté son duel au sommet contre le Leinster (31-22), samedi 25 mai à Londres, en finale de la Champions Cup pour valider la sixième couronne de son histoire (22 - 31). Toulouse conforte ainsi sa place au firmament du rugby européen après les sacres de 1996, 2003, 2005, 2010 et 2021.

La triathlète française Cassandre Beaugrand a remporté samedi l'étape du circuit mondial WTCS de Cagliari, à deux mois des JO Paris 2024 . Avec cette victoire, elle scelle officiellement sa place dans la sélection olympique française, même si celle-ci faisait peu de doutes. 

Après une semaine de qualifications,  l’édition 2024 de Roland-Garros s'est ouverte dimanche , avec une question qui revient sur toutes les lèvres : Rafael Nadal parviendra t-il à créer l'exploit contre le n°4 mondial Alexander Zverev ou prendra t-il d'entrée la porte de son très probable dernier Roland-garros ? Un weekend de Coupes !

En France, le Paris Saint-Germain a dominé l'Olympique Lyonnais (2-1), samedi en finale la Coupe de France,  et terminé sa saison sur une bonne note au Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Le dernier match de Kylian Mbappé sous les couleurs parisiennes s'est conclu avec le troisième titre du PSG cette saison après le Trophée des champions et la Ligue 1. La superstar du football français est désormais attendue au Real Madrid.

Déjà sacré champion à la mi-avril, le Bayer Leverkusen est venu à bout de Kaiserslautern (1-0), vaillant pensionnaire de 2e division, samedi soir à Berlin, en finale de Coupe d'Allemagne, pour s'offrir le premier doublé de l'histoire du club.

Ce succès permet aux hommes de Xabi Alonso de conclure la saison en fanfare avec l'exceptionnel bilan de 43 victoires, 9 matches nuls et une seule défaite (en finale de la Ligue Europa mercredi contre l'Atalanta Bergame) toutes compétitions confondues.

En Angleterre, Manchester United a créé la surprise en dominant son grand rival Manchester City (2-1) en finale de la Cup, samedi à Wembley, un trophée qui qualifie les "Red Devils" pour la Ligue Europa.

Toutefois, ce succès n'efface pas leur terne saison en Premier League, terminée à la huitième place, 31 points derrière le champion... Manchester City.

Un autocar  a été calciné et 30 supporters, ainsi que huit policiers, ont été légèrement blessés samedi soir lors d'une rixe entre supporters de l'OL et du PSG à un péage d'autoroute, juste avant la finale de la Coupe de France à Lille, des faits condamnés "avec la plus grande fermeté" par le président Emmanuel Macron.

Giro: Tadej Pogacar remporte son premier Tour d'Italie, après une domination insolente et prend date pour le Tour de France

Après quatre années à se consacrer au Tour de France, Tadej Pogacar avait annoncé sa participation au Tour d'Italie dès décembre dernier, afin de doubler pour la première fois avec la Grande Boucle. Cinq mois plus tard, le Slovène a validé haut la main la première étape de son pari, lui qui espère remporter les deux premiers Grands Tours du calendrier au cours de la même saison.

L'hommage de Geraint Thomas: "Pogacar est le meilleur coureur contre lequel j'ai couru"

L'exploit n'a plus été réalisé depuis Marco Pantani en 1998. Plusieurs coureurs ont échoué dans cette quête à l'image d'Alberto Contador ou de Chris Froome. En plus de six succès d'étapes et du classement de la montagne dans la besace, Tadej Pogacar a écrasé la concurrence au général sur ce Giro. Daniel Martinez, son dauphin, a terminé à près de 10 minutes. Renversé par Primoz Roglic en Italie à la veille de l'arrivée finale l'an dernier et troisième cette année, Geraint Thomas a senti le poids de ses 38 ans face à "Pogi".

Dès la deuxième étape, au terme de la montée du Sanctuaire d'Oropa, Tadej Pogacar décrochait son premier bouquet , récupérant aussi un maillot rose qu'il n'a plus lâché depuis. Car au vu du show proposé en Italie par Pogacar, seul le double tenant du titre sur la Grande Boucle semble en mesure de rivaliser. Sauf que le Danois livre actuellement une course contre-la-montre, face à lui-même cette fois, pour être au départ du prochain Tour de France à Florence (le 29 juin à Florence).

Pogacar envoie un message avant le Tour de France

Le staff de la Visma-Lease a Bike a déjà indiqué que Jonas Vingegaard se présentera seulement sur le Tour de France s'il est à 100% de sa condition physique. Tombé le 4 avril dernier lors du Tour du Pays basque, le grimpeur a souffert d'une contusion pulmonaire et d'un pneumothorax en plus d'une fracture de la clavicule et de plusieurs côtes cassées. Le timing pour revenir au top s'annonce serré et depuis, Tadej Pogacar a multiplié les attaques et les victoires.

Tombé le 23 avril 2023 lors de Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Tadej Pogacar ne s'était pas présenté dans sa meilleure forme ensuite sur le dernier Tour de France. Rivalisant pendant deux semaines avec Jonas Vingegaard, il avait terminé à 7'29" de son rival. Cette fois, le sens de l'histoire semble s'être inversé. Si la concurrence sera plus féroce cet été par rapport au Giro, avec notamment Remco Evenepoel et Primoz Roglic, elle ne semble pas de la même planète que ce Pogacar. Le prodige de 25 ans aura également une armada à son service avec Adam Yates, Juan Ayuso ou Joao Almeida.

Sur le Tour d'Italie, dès qu'il a voulu gagner, Tadej Pogacar ne s'est pas fait prier. Après un succès sur le contre-la-montre de Pérouse, il n'a pas forcé son talent pour battre ses rivaux à Prati di Tivo, attendant le dernier moment. Au Monte Pana, après avoir crucifié le jeune Giulio Pellizzari sans vraiment le vouloir, il donnait ses lunettes et son maillot rose en guise d'excuses à l'Italien, qui possède le même agent que lui. A Livigno ou ce samedi à Bassano del Grappa, le leader des UAE Emirates a terminé avec plus de deux minutes de marge. "Aujourd'hui (samedi), c'était juste un autre test avant cet été, pour voir ce qu'il en est", a conclu Pogacar. "Je voulais finir le Giro avec une bonne mentalité et une bonne forme. Je pense y être parvenu."

Il est clairement l'un des coureurs français à suivre en 2024. Champion du monde espoirs en titre, Axel Laurance vit une saison faste avec un quatrième bouquet glané, le général du Tour de Norvège. Vainqueure de la 2e étape, le coureur d'Alpecin-Deceuninck n'a pas tremblé lors d'une 4e et dernière étape sans grande difficulté remportée par Alexander Kristoff.

Ce duel au sommet entre Rafael Nadal et Alexander Zverev, programmé sur le court central de Roland Garros en night-session, est à suivre ce lundi 27 mai à partir de 14 heures 30 sur les chaînes de France TV, France 2 en l’occurrence. Le tirage au sort de ce jeudi a révélé un premier choc dans le tableau du simple messieurs entre Rafael Nadal et Alexander Zverev.

L’espagnol a beau avoir triomphé à 14 reprises à la Porte d’Auteuil, il arrivera dans cette rencontre avec le statut d’outsider. Récent vainqueur à Rome, Alexander Zverev pointe au quatrième rang mondial et fait figure de vrai menace pour les favoris au titre le 9 juin prochain. Les deux hommes se retrouvent après un match épique en 2022 qui avait malheureusement dû se finir sur une blessure pour l’allemand. Sur place et derrière leurs écrans, les fans de tennis espèrent massivement un nouvel exploit du majorquin, lui qui dispute probablement son dernier Roland Garros.

Fin de carrière pour Alizé Cornet, éliminée au premier tour

Alizé Cornet, 107e mondiale, a été éliminée dès son entrée en lice à Roland-Garros , battue 6-2, 6-1 par la Chinoise Qinwen Zheng (8e) finaliste du dernier Open d'Australie, pour ce qui était le dernier match de sa carrière, mardi. L'heure de la retraite a donc sonné pour la Française de 34 ans, qui avait fait du rendez-vous parisien son tout dernier tournoi. Outre six titres en simple à son palmarès, elle détient le record du nombre de Grands Chelems joués d'affilée (69), une série débutée à l'Open d'Australie en 2007.

Rybakina se qualifie facilement pour le deuxième tour

Elena Rybakina, 4e joueuse mondiale qui compte parmi les prétendantes au titre, s'est qualifiée sans forcer pour le 2e tour de Roland-Garros, en battant 6-2, 6-3 la Belge Greet Minnen (85e), mardi. La Kazakhe de 24 ans, victorieuse de Wimbledon en 2023, n'a eu aucun mal à imposer sa supériorité sous le toit du Suzanne-Lenglen, le seul court avec le Philippe-Chatrier à être protégé de la pluie qui s'abat de nouveau sur Paris.

Rybakina, dont le meilleurs parcours à Roland-Garros s'est arrêté en quart de finale en 2021, effectue un printemps sur terre battue assez convaincant. Lauréate à Stuttgart de son troisième titre de l'année mi-avril (après Brisbane et Abou Dhabi sur dur), elle a ensuite atteint les demi-finales du WTA 1000 de Madrid, avant de devoir déclarer forfait, malade, à celui de Rome, dont elle était tenante du titre, il y a trois semaines. La Kazakhe affrontera au prochain tour la Néerlandaise Arantxa Rus (49e) ou l'Allemande Angelique Kerber, triple lauréate de Grands Chelems descendue au 238e rang.

Michael Thorbjornsen follows Ludvig Åberg earning PGA Tour card out of PGA Tour University program

Another stanford product looks to make waves on the pga tour after securing his playing privileges.

Another young stud will be arriving on the PGA Tour in short time. Stanford standout Michael Thorbjornsen officially secured his PGA Tour card after finishing atop the PGA Tour University rankings for the Class of 2024. Thorbjornsen will be able to accept PGA Tour membership upon turning professional and will be eligible for all full-field open events for the remainder of the 2024 season and the 2025 season.

"PGA Tour U is, I think, one of the best programs in all of sports," Thorbjornsen told the PGA Tour. "What they've done, creating a pathway to the PGA Tour and to these different Tours underneath it, it's huge. It gives students and us golfers reasons to stay for four years, and you can't really pass up on the opportunities that they present to you."

Thorbjornsen rose to the top spot in the PGA Tour U standings courtesy of three wins over the last two years at the collegiate level as well as four made cuts at the professional level. The Massachusetts native memorably finished finished in solo fourth place at the 2022 Travelers Championship after gaining entry into the field via a sponsor's exemption. Last summer, he also notched a top-20 result at the John Deere Classic a few months after claiming the Pac-12 Championship.

In addition to his strong play in the United States, Thorbjornsen has also found his footing on European soil. The 22-year-old has teed it up the past two years in the Dubai Desert Classic finishing T20 in 2023 and T11 in 2024.

Thorbjornsen battled back-and-forth with Georgia Tech's Christo Lamprecht for the top spot in the Class of 2024. After enduring injuries at the start of the year, he found his groove winning the Cabo Collegiate in early March before rattling off five straight top 10s to end his year before this week's NCAA Division I National Championship.

"Christo has been a huge part in my success this spring pushing me, even though we're not together and I rarely see him," Thorbjornsen said. "Finishing in that No. 1 spot is massive, so just doing everything you can every single day, making sure you're getting 1% better every single day, is huge."

The 22-year-old joins Ludvig Åberg as No. 1 players to earn their playing privileges via PGA Tour U. Åberg has found plenty of success in his young career with wins on both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. He also starred on the European Ryder Cup team last fall and finished runner-up to Scottie Scheffler this spring at the Masters in his major championship debut.

Thorbjornsen will hope to follow in the Swede's footsteps beginning potentially at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the end of June. There is a chance he gets things going even sooner as he plans to qualify for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 and make his fourth start in the championship.
