W hatever your vehicle of choice may be, regardless of how many wheels it may have or how long you've been driving or riding it, you probably still remember just how difficult it was to learn at first. Once you emerge triumphant with your license, it's always advised to select a practical vehicle as your first, and not to get carried away. The same applies if you're a seasoned driver of all things four-wheeled, but are looking to venture into the world of motorcycles.

Suddenly, factors like the force required in cornering and potentially-life-saving nature of protective gear need to be considered, and your interaction with your fellow drivers and the roads themselves change. If you're attempting to adjust to all of this atop a bike that isn't suited to your confidence and skill level, or indeed the type of riding you plan to do, your experience will be far worse and potentially much more dangerous. To help beginner riders make a choice that's right for them, we'll turn to Harley-Davidson, the venerable manufacturer with a lot of super motorcycles behind it , to see whether the company's Iron 883 is a suitable pick for newcomers.

On its 2009 launch, the Iron 883 arrived with a max pace of 105 mph, 46 horsepower, and a 0-60 mph at 6.6 seconds. Performance-wise, the 2009 Iron 883 is somewhat akin to the 2022 revival of the BSA Gold Star — which tops out at 103 mph, and 41 pound-feet of torque.

With these models, the emphasis is on rideability and practicality more than sheer numbers, so new riders looking for a machine they're confident they'll be able to tame could find them a good fit. There's another number that's very important to consider for somebody new to the motorcycle market: the sticker price.

An Easier Price To Swallow Than Some Harleys

Buying your very first motorcycle isn't the kind of decision you tend to make on a whim. At the same time, though, because it's your first, you're unlikely to invest an enormous amount into it. What if you're just testing the waters to see whether the two-wheeled life is truly for you? If this is the case, limiting your financial commitment is wise.

The Harley-Davidson lineup's costliest models include the CVO Street Glide and Road Glide, which share a base price of $44,499. In comparison, the 2024 Nightster and Sportster S are priced at $11,999 and $16,999, respectively. Naturally, these aren't like-for-like comparisons, as the CVO Street Glide is equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 — capable of 1,977cc and offering 115 horsepower, a new displacement high for a Harley Tourer.

The Iron 883, in comparison, is a more modest financial proposition. In 2019, BikeSocial reported that the model year's Iron 883 would cost £8,895 (approximately $11,000). Generally, then, those who are interested in venturing into the world of motorcycles but aren't able to — or don't feel the need to — pick up one of Harley-Davidson's Custom Vehicle Operation specials can join the world's Harley-Davidson riders in a much more affordable fashion than they may have expected. Further, the Iron 883's best asset, as with the Sportster family generally, is its nature as a cruiser.

Cruisers Can Be Great Choices As Beginner Motorcycles

As the designation implies, a cruiser can be a great choice for more casual riding. They're machines that typically offer a more comfortable, lower stance for the rider, though rougher terrain may feel rather worse as a result. The Iron 883 in particular is an interesting proposition. With a dry weight of 545 pounds, it's a relatively heavy machine, with J.D. Power estimating the typical cruiser weight range to be 300 to 500 pounds or so. For newcomers, the weight of a cruiser can be considered either pro or con: while it can lend stability to maneuvering, it can also make a bike a bit harder to direct.

If weight is a concern, there's a case for considering a different Harley-Davidson cruiser. The brand's most lightweight model, as of its 2022 release, is the Nightster cruiser, at around 487 pounds. At 975cc and with 89 brake horsepower, the 2022 Nightster was a new type of beast, a foray into an engine realm that the Iron 883 and other 883 cruisers hadn't previously known: the Revolution Max. The Iron 883, meanwhile, featured an air-cooled engine without rear deactivation, which could potentially struggle on busy roads; the liquid-cooled Revolution Max outperforms it.

Cruisers are solid choices as first motorcycles, balancing power, control, and comfort, if perhaps lacking in the high-end features that dedicated racing machines or sport bikes employ. Let's see if the Iron 883 developed far enough to remain a worthy choice in 2024.

Ultimately, Should You Choose An Iron 883 As Your First Bike Today?

The Iron 883, as we've seen, debuted in 2009, and availability in Europe ceased 11 years later. In November 2022, Harley-Davidson shared on Instagram that the last evolution Sportster, "A Gunship Gray Iron 883. The last of its kind, but not the end of the line," had been built. The 2022 edition, though it had received boons like fuel injection since its debut, had not changed very much from its beginnings; sporting 53 horsepower and 53.8 pound-feet of torque.

As shipped, it's a weighty, punchy ride, which can be a good avenue into Harley-Davidson ownership. However, depending on your confidence level, the bike may still be some cc above your sweet spot for learning the ropes. First-hand experience through a test ride may be the best way to discover how you feel in this regard.

Another important thing to note is that, if you're so inclined, the Iron 883 has always been and remains very customizable; the Roadsters' popularity surely helping with the availability of aftermarket parts. Plan to tour on my 883. What gear should I get?

Howdy all, I have a '09 883cc Sportster, all stock everything. I plan to get a mustang seat and windshield. I live in NJ and I have a plan to visit a friend in FL, then my father in AL and then head back to NJ. I would prefer soft over hard bags for looks, but will use hard bags if they're "that" much better. I plan to be self-sufficient; sleeping bag, small tent, tarp, clothes, etc. Once I get the ball rolling I'll figure it out but I need a push in the right direction as far as which brackets or mounts and any additional help is greatly appreciated.

Hard bags look great but you can overstuff the crap out of soft bags.

And ghost brackets rock. It may be that the only purpose for your life is to serve as a warning to others.

After decades of MC traveling with various bikes and luggage systems, I really love my leather bags and tour pack. The bags just hang over the fender either under or over the seat (adjustable cross piece). With them over the seat they are easy to lift off and take inside a motel room with me or take to my tent if I can't park right by it. Same with my tour pack. Just straps to the sissy bar and comes off easy to carry inside like a suitcase. My sleeping bag and tent are in stuff sacks and can be strapped on the passenger seat or handlebar risers. I've always liked this setup because it's so flexible. I can ride cross country, camping out along the way. Then when I get to somewhere fun like maybe Vegas, I can put all the luggage in my room, clean and polish up the bike, and use it for a chick magnet while cruising the strip. Can't ask for a better day than that!

My Sporty had the hard leather saddlebags, I could pack just about anything in em. Bought the tour pack, strapped it to the sissy bar, and used it as a backrest while riding, really made long distance riding easier. Sleeping bag fit inside, tent strapped to the top. Battery operated fan and an air matress, with the pump already in it. Don't laugh when that ground is like cement you'll thank me.

All I can say, and this is from experience traveling halfway across the country on an 883, make sure your seat is very comfortable and fits you in the position you feel comfortable in. and, highway pegs. you will want/need a couple different options for foot position. WHen I made the long ride, my seat would have been perfectly comfortable if I were 6 inches to 10 inches shorter. and I had forward controls on the bike, and no highway pegs. After 3 to 4 hours straight, you just want to get off the bike and burn it where it stands and hitch hike the rest of the way, if it isn't comfortable

Hi-way pegs - tent laying across the handlebars - tall sissy bar - sleeping bag to lean back on - throw over saddle bags - several bungee cords - four & a half gallon gas tank - the biggest touring seat you can find and some really loud straight drag pipes !

You might want to check into something like either the CM1000, second from the top on the specials page In Stock Specials or maybe the Slipstream camper Slipstream Camper if you are likely to get serious about traveling by bike. It's more up front and a few bucks a year for license and insurance but can make a world of difference in comfort having a cooler, spare gas can, clothes for several days without a laundromat, one or two sets of dry footwear and fishing or whatever hobby gear for along the way and whatever else.

Yea....just the thing to tow behind a Sporty 883. :thumbsup:think:laugh Saddlemen make some nice sissy bar bags. I have one and can fit three or four days worth of duds in it. You can mount it towards you and lean against it or turn it the other way if you have a luggage rack like I did on my 883. Lots of side pockets and they come with a rain cover. I use it on Dyna now on my daily ride to work. Hold my laptop, lunch and change of shoes.

Hey, the CM1000 only weighs 125#, much less than some partners people ride with. With clothes etc. inside it's still lighter than some passengers.

Honestly if i was a bit smaller of a guy (i am too fat for a sporty) i would be rideing a 883 iron myself. Awsome motor, great reliability, STUPID easy maintenece, and fun simple ride that can be molded to do what ever rideing ya like.

As long as your weight and height don't interfere w/ comfort it should be an ok ride. If your exhaust is stock or not too loud it should be ok. I had an 05 883 and loved it, lots of torque and good on highway. You can use a set of sport bike bags as luggage. Have fun and ride long!!!

Redundant threads save the search button from being over used. It's all good . Best quality of a motorcycle is that it fits you well as is or with a bar or seat change, etc. HD likely has more parts available than anything else out there so you could easily make it fit like a glove. If you have never ridden one, I would rent one for a day, very inexpensive way to see if a purchase would be worth while. When I started riding (A hundred years ago or so) a 800+ cc motor would be among the big dogs. You don't need huge and heavy to have a great ride. Get what calls to you, not anyone else. Best of luck shopping and safe travels.

I put Hagon shocks with heavier springs, touring shield, back rest with grab handles for bungee cords use and throttlemeister as cruise control. I keep to 70mph for relaxed riding. The simplicity, the idea that the bait shop may have parts in stock and that most towns will have a half dozen mechanics, not to mention that most people that will stop for assistance will probably have what you need in their toolbox, is a great plus IMO.

I would tour on a Sportster without hesitation. I'm sure an '04 or newer 883 is a peach to ride compared to my '72 Daytona 500. Ted Simon rode 63,000 miles on a 500 Triumph over four years through 54 countries. I did only 5000 miles on mine- Although it's a paint shaker, it has its sweet spot- I believe every bike does.

The new Sportster is far superior in comfort and reliability to the great majority of the bikes everyone rode 30-40 years ago. We did thousands of miles on 305 Hondas, 250 Yamahas, and 500 cc Triumphs and BSAs. No one would mistake the Sporty for a modern touring bike but it is certainly capable of going long distances. Some people still tour on 250s, a Sportster is a luxury mount by comparison.
