day trip to santa catalina island

Going on a Catalina Island day trip is one of the most unique and fun things you can do when visiting Southern California . Whether you want a break from exploring the urban landscapes of Los Angeles or want a change of scene from the beaches of Orange County, Santa Catalina Island has a lot to offer visitors and it surprisingly quick and easy to reach from numerous ports in either area.

Catalina is a nature and water lover’s paradise and really has something for everyone — from a charming main town to epic outdoor activities to fun, family-friendly outings.

From beautiful scenery, unique architecture, fascinating ecosystems and crystal-clear water, Catalina makes for an excellent day trip destination and one that you soon won’t forget!

Table of Contents

How to Get to Catalina Island

Catalina, being an island, is really only accessible by ferry (unless you’re willing to shed the cash for a helicopter ride to the island). There are four different ferries leaving from various ports in LA and Orange County, and the journeys vary in time and frequency.

Los Angeles to Catalina

If you are in LA, the easiest way to get to Catalina is to sail from Long Beach or San Pedro, both located in LA County.

Ferry from Long Beach

Long Beach is a town located in the south of Los Angeles County and makes for the busiest port for sailing to Catalina Island. The ferry from Long Beach, operated by Catalina Express , leaves multiple times per day and has services directly to Avalon — the main town on the island.

It is recommended to arrive at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before the journey to ensure that you have time to park, to purchase tickets (if you haven’t already done so online) and to board the boat.

The journey takes about an hour from start to finish.

Ferry from San Pedro

The ferry to Catalina from San Pedro is operated by the same company that operates the Long Beach Ferry — Catalina Express .

Again, there are a few sailings per day between San Pedro and Avalon and the San Pedro port also has sailings to the other “city” on the island, Two Harbors, so leaving from this port is a good option if you would like to explore the area outside of Avalon.

Like the ferry from Long Beach, expect sailing time to take about an hour port-to-port and try to be at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before your expected departure times.

Avalon Bay from the hills on Catalina Island

Organised Tour from Los Angeles

If you would prefer to discover Catalina as part of an organised tour rather than independently, then this tour leaving from LA & North Orange County is a great choice for you.

They will pick you up from your hotel and organise everything for you, ensuring that all you have to do on your day trip to Catalina is have fun!

Alternatively, this tour leaving from Anaheim is a great option. It also includes hotel pick-up and transport.

There are countless optional add-ons (including a number of the activities we have listed in this article) and you can enjoy all of the highlights of the destination with none of the stress of planning!

Orange County to Catalina

If you’re staying in Orange County and want to visit Catalina Island from this area, then there are a couple of options available for you here, as well.

Ferry from Dana Point

Dana Point is a town in South Orange County that is perhaps best known for being the starting point of the iconic Pacific Coast Highway . Leaving from the iconic Dana Point Harbor (which is also filled with a lot of cool shops and great restaurants!), this ferry is also operated by the Catalina Express company.

Like the other ferry sailings, it is important to arrive in enough advance time to board your boat — parking can be a bit of a nightmare at Dana Point Harbor depending on the time of day and season you’re visiting in. The journey to Catalina will take about an hour and a half and the ferry only sails to Avalon.

Ferry from Newport Beach

And our final option for ferries to Catalina leaves from Newport Beach in north Orange County. Operated by Catalina Flyer , this ferry departs from Newport Beach harbour and sails multiple times per day.

The ferry company asks that passengers arrive at the terminal an hour before departing and the journey takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Avalon Harbour

San Diego to Catalina

If you’re thinking of going on a day trip to Catalina Island from San Diego, please note that you are going to be in for a very long day and it’s not entirely advisable. The closest ferry port to downtown San Diego would be in Dana Point, which is about a 90-minute drive without traffic — and it’s southern California, so you should expect there to be traffic.

Couple the drive with the fact that you will likely need to be at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before departure and that the ferry will take a further 90 minutes to reach Avalon, then you’re looking at spending at least six hours in transit for a simple day trip.

If you’re set on visiting Catalina from San Diego rather than LA, it is far more advisable to plan an overnight trip there to ensure that you’re able to actually have fun and not be rushed.

Things to do on a Catalina Day Trip

Now that we’ve discussed all of the ferry options for getting to the island, now it’s time to discuss what to do on Catalina Island for a day! Whether you’re looking for adventure or to simply relax in a delightful vacation destination, you’re sure to fall in love.

Explore Downtown Avalon

As the only officially incorporated town on Catalina Island, Avalon is a must-visit on the island and it is absolutely charming. Boasting classic seaside charms, a wonderful promenade, great shops, and fantastic restaurants, Avalon has a lot to offer visitors.

Make sure to take in the iconic Catalina Casino and enjoy the views of the boats moored in the harbour. There is also a great seaside promenade that you can stroll down, taking the time to pop into various shops and support the local economy!

If you want to venture a little bit outside of the city centre, then make sure to visit the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden (operated by Catalina Island Conservancy) for a pleasant stroll through well-kept gardens full of endemic plants.

And if you want to learn more about Avalon’s history and top sites, consider going on this one-hour tour to give you a more holistic view of Catalina’s capital! There is also this private golf cart tour around the town or, if you want to go independently, you could opt to rent a golf cart yourself. You could also find a food tour to explore the local culinary scene and sample a bit of fresh seafood.

Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens

Tour the Iconic Casino

There is no way that taking the time to explore Catalina would be complete without visiting the iconic and famous Catalina Casino — easily the most memorable building on the island and, at one point, the tallest building in California!

Constructed in 1928 and commissioned by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr, the Catalina Casino is a beautiful art deco-style building overlooking Avalon Bay. Contrary to what the name may suggest, there has actually never been any sort of gambling facilities here, either, and instead uses the term “casino” from the literal Italian meaning of a “gathering place.”

Today, the building is home to a swanky cinema where you can see a new release and a beautiful ballroom that hosts events from time to time. If you’d like to learn more about the history of this iconic building, consider taking this tour that will bring you behind the scenes of the Catalina Casino.

The historic Avalon Casino

Go on a Semi Submarine

Though the island itself has a lot to offer, one of the main draws for anyone going on a one-day trip to Catalina Island would have to be the incredible aquatic activities that one can embark on. Catalina boasts a fascinating and unique underwater ecosystem with countless different species living and thriving in vast kelp forests.

If you want to have a glimpse of what lies below the surface of the crystal clear waters of Catalina without having to get too wet, then consider going for a boat tour on a semi-submersible!

These half-submerged, glass-bottom boats have windows that are perfect for peering at the bright orange Garibaldi fish and looking into the depths of kelp forests without having to don a snorkel or get a SCUBA certification.

If you’re keen to see this side of Catalina, consider taking this semi-submarine tour (also available from GetYourGuide here ) and prepare to be amazed at the world under the sea.

Search for Wild Bison

Catalina not only boats fascinating wildlife below the ocean’s surface — in fact, the wildlife above ground is just as fascinating. And one of the unique things about Catalina is that it is home to its own wild bison herd, which have lived on the island since they were imported there in 1924.

Though at one point the herd had over 600 bison, there are now about 150 bison that make up the herd. The Catalina Island bison are also not completely purebred bison, and they are believed to be a cross between the American Bison and a domestic cow.

You can spot these fascinating creatures on a jeep tour, where you can also get off-road and see just how beautiful the landscape of rural Catalina really is — an unmissable experience when you visit Catalina Island!

Snorkel or SCUBA Dive in the Kelp Forests

As mentioned earlier, something that should be included on any Catalina Island itinerary is exploring the incredible underwater ecosystems that reside off the shores of the island.

And one of the best ways to take in the sea life is by snorkelling or SCUBA diving in the gorgeous kelp forests.

Catalina is one of the best hotspots for SCUBA divers in southern California and is actually considered to be one of the best places to go diving in the entire world. The water around the island is exceptionally clear, meaning that the visibility that you can get in the kelp forest is second to none.

The unique ecosystem that you will experience either SCUBA diving or snorkelling through these kelp forests is really something truly exceptional.

Try Kayaking or Stand-up Paddleboarding

If you’re not too keen to see what lies below the ocean’s surface on your Catalina Island day trip itinerary but still want to get out on the water, then consider trying your hand at kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding!

This is truly an oasis to try out these fun sports as there are countless other people doing exactly the same thing — meaning that it is a safe and secure location to do it!

On a kayak or paddleboard, you can get to some remote coves and areas that are hard to reach or see and you can really feel one with the water and nature surrounding.

Keep an eye out for wildlife while you’re paddling along and maybe even consider taking some snorkel gear with you so you can hop in the water and see what lies beneath you!

Go Ziplining

If you’re after an adrenaline rush when visiting Catalina that also will provide incredible 360-degree views of the island and the surrounding Pacific Ocean, then consider taking the leap and going ziplining!

The Catalina Island Zip Line Eco Tour is a collection of five different zip lines that can reach up to 600 feet above sea level, go up to 35 mph, and provide you with absolutely stunning and amazing views over the entire island — along with a pretty hefty adrenaline rush!

So if you’re a bit of a daredevil and want to add quite a bit of excitement to your trip to Catalina, then please consider viewing the beautiful island from this heart-pounding zip line! After getting your adrenaline pumping, consider unwinding with a cocktail at the nearby Descanso Beach Club.

If you would rather explore the inland delights of Catalina on foot while on your day trip, then consider hitting one of the many trails on the island and going for a hike. Hiking opportunities are plentiful on the island and there is something for all types of fitness and skill levels.

Some of the most popular hiking trails include the Garden to Sky summit, which begins in the botanic garden, or the Trans Catalina trail, which can take you across the entire island if you’re willing to take the time to walk the whole thing.

Lounge on the Beach

If your plan for your day trip involves relaxation rather than adrenaline, you’ll find that the island doesn’t disappoint in this regard, either! There are countless lovely beaches that you can lounge on with varying degrees of busyness and popularity.

The most popular beach on the island is undoubtedly Descanso Beach, which is located just past the Casino on the other side of Avalon. There are also a few other beaches around Avalon that are worth visiting, including South Beach, Middle Beach and Step Beach.

If you’re in the Two Harbors area, there are plenty of beaches here that are absolutely wonderful, as well. Harbor Sands has a number of facilities, however, there is also a great beach in front of the Two Harbors Campground.

No matter where you find a good strip of sand to lay out your towel, you’re sure not to be disappointed in the quality of beaches on Catalina Island!

Where to Stay on Catalina Island

If you’re planning more of a Catalina Island weekend trip (as you can see, there are so many things to do that it’s impossible to cram them into the span of just one day!), then you’re going to need to find a great place to stay. If you’re wondering where to rest your head in Catalina, check out these options:

Catalina Island Seacrest Inn – If you’re looking for a comfortable and well-equipped mid-range hotel, then this is a great option for you! They have a range of clean and cosy rooms available and a convenient location in the heart of Avalon!

Pavilion Hotel – This Avalon hotel is located directly on the beach and is the perfect choice for those looking for a bit of luxury on their overnight trip to Catalina. They have several plush rooms available and fantastic grounds for you to lounge around in as well. Their location is also perfect for exploring all of the highlights of Avalon on foot.

Private Rental – If you’d rather have your own apartment or cottage during your stay in Catalina, then there are countless properties available on the island — including this beautiful villa in Avalon!

Planning a visit to Catalina can seem a bit complicated at first, but with numerous ferry options and countless fun and interesting things to do on the island, there is no doubt that it makes for an excellent, unique place to visit in Southern California!

How long do I need to stay to see the island rather well and to take in all the sights at a leisurly pace?

It’s really up to you and how much time, but I would recommend at least a few days if you want to truly explore the island 🙂

Planning a trip mid June with my husband and 95 year old Father-in-Law with all consideration he does get around pretty good but we don’t want to wear him out either, so do you think the Golf Cart would be sufficient for him or we were considering renting a power chair for him for this outing. Both my husband and he have been to Catalina Island before but it has been over 30 years. This would be a first for me.

Hi there! What would you recommend taking for a day trip? Is there a place on the island to store things while there?

Hi AnnMarie, I don’t think you need to take anything special with you for just a day except for a swimsuit if you plan do any water activities! You can find lockers to store your things on the island.

How far is from Ferry to the Casino?

Hi Gala, the Casino is about a 15-minute walk from the ferry terminal – less than a mile all along Avalon Bay.n

Thank you Maggie, is it active casino or just museum?

There has actually never been any gambling at the Avalon Casino (“casino” is simply the Italian word for “gathering place”). Currently, it operates as a cinema and an event space.

My parents took me to Avalon 75 years ago and I have been bring my boat there as a teen and adult. I no longer live in California but love to see the pictures and hear about whats going on at the island

Happy you enjoyed the article, Tom!

Been there twice, went parasailing for the first time out there. The casino is a fantastic place to visit. This comes from a person from Appleton Wisconsin, highly recommended to go and visit.

Thanks for your comment, Patrick! Glad you enjoyed your time in Catalina 🙂

How do you get around once you arrive on the island? Would you recommend renting a car?

The best way to get around is by golf cart! There are several places to rent them once you get to the island 🙂

I’ve grew up in Los Angeles and somehow I’ve never been to Catalina Island! This definitely makes me want to go. That casino is gorgeous and those turquoise waters are to die for. That’s definitely hard to come by at most LA beaches. Thanks for sharing.

Hope you get to visit sometime, Alanna! It’s really lovely 🙂

A Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip – the Complete Guide

Catalina Island day trip - a complete guide

Are you planning a day trip to Catalina Island? Then continue reading! I’ll share everything you need to know to create your perfect Catalina Island day trip .

Santa Catalina Island, which is generally referred to simply as Catalina Island, is located about 30 miles off the coast of California’s mainland. It is one of California’s most underrated, hidden gems.

With a population of just over 4200 people and around 22 miles (35 km) in length, this tiny Californian island makes for an amazing, fun-filled day trip.

On one of my most recent excursions to Mexico , I got the chance to stop in Catalina Island and was blown away by its breathtaking beauty, which quickly turned Catalina into one of my all-time favorite travel destinations.

In this guide, I will go over all of the best insider tips on how to have a successful Catalina Island day trip.

And now, without further ado, here is my ultimate guide to the perfect day trip to Catalina Island.

How to Get to Catalina Island

There are two different options to choose from to get from the mainland to Catalina Island: by sea or by air.

The most common way to get to Catalina Island for the day is by taking a ferry. There are 4 different ports to travel out of; San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, or Dana Point. The ferry rides are operated by two companies: Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer and take about an hour.

The next option will have you in Catalina in just about 15 minutes and that is by helicopter with IEX Helicopters. You can catch a helicopter ride from San Pedro, Long Beach, John Wayne Airport, and Burbank Airport.

While the ferry usually costs about $80 for a round trip (discounts available for seniors and children), it is by far the most cost-effective way for your Catalina Island day trip. A helicopter ride starts at $179 per person for a one-way flight.

Tip: Catalina Island makes a perfect day trip from both Los Angeles and San Diego

Things to Do During Your Catalina Island Day Trip

While the idea of spending only a day in such a beautiful place like Catalina might not sound like a long time, the good thing is that it is actually the perfect amount of time to explore the famous, yet small island .

Here are all the must-do’s for your day trip to Catalina Island.

1. Rent a Golf Cart

Whatever you do, one does not visit Catalina Island without renting a golf cart and driving around the island to take in all the beautiful views that the island offers.

In downtown Catalina, you’ll find several golf cart rental companies that will let you rent carts by the hour. Along with a golf cart, you will be given a map of the island and sent on your way to let your wanderlust run wild.

We rented our golf cart for 2 hours, but 1 hour ended up being more than enough time to drive around and discover the island.

Tip: if you really want to see all the best places on the island then this private golf cart tour is a great option.

2. Walk Around Downtown

Exploring downtown on a day trip to Catalina Island

Avalon is the main town on Catalina Island, and that is where you find downtown Catalina.

Filled with delicious restaurants, shopping boutiques, and some fun nightlife, downtown Catalina is the perfect way to unwind and spend your day.

Whether you’re in a shopping mood or would like to enjoy a seaside cocktail, this quaint neighborhood is the perfect place to hang out and relax.

While you can easily get through all of downtown within 30 minutes, it’s perfect because it leaves time for the rest of the activities you can do during your Catalina Island day trip.

3. Go Snorkeling

things to do on a one day trip to Catalina Island

If there is an activity that I can’t recommend enough it’s to go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the island. With an abundance of different snorkeling locations, there is absolutely no better way to spend your day in Catalina.

Snorkeling is one of my favorite activities in the world, so it’s needless to say that whenever I am anywhere near water, I try to fit some snorkel time into my itinerary.

While I have been snorkeling more times than I can count, in more places than I can count, Catalina blew me away with its out-of-this-world snorkeling spots . With hundreds of fish swimming around you, this is the perfect activity for your day in Catalina.

4. Take an Underwater Cruise

Looking to catch a glimpse of the underwater life but don’t want to get wet? there is this cool semi-submarine called Nautilus .

They offer trips that last 45 minutes and take you to a marine sanctuary to see the fish from your own porthole. Especially if you are visiting Catalina Island with kids, this is a great activity!

You’ll be taken through Lover’s Cove, a State Marine Conservation Area sanctuary where you’ll see amazing undersea gardens and ocean habitats in a semi-submersible vessel designed after America’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus.

5. Zipline Across the Island

What better way to view Catalina than from 300 feet above the ground ?

While this activity might not be for the weak-hearted, it is definitely worth it and probably one of the most exhilarating things to do in Catalina Island.

Catch views like no other, all while getting a good adrenaline rush by zip-lining through the island. There truly is not a more liberating feeling than traveling through the air at high speeds while basking in the beauty that Catalina offers.

Tip: if this zipline sounds a bit too much for you, check out this activity . It gets you to climb bridges, ladders, and other challenging obstacles suspended in a grove of towering eucalyptus. Great to do with kids as well!

6. Lay Out on the Beach

One day in Catalina Island - enjoy the beach

If you’re looking to just take it easy during your Catalina Island day trip, there is nothing wrong with just grabbing a cocktail, laying out on the beach, and enjoying the sunshine.

And to be quite honest, you can never go wrong with a beach day. The main beach at Catalina is breathtaking and it’s the perfect way to unwind during your vacation.

7. Kayak Through the Waters of the Island

Another famous activity in Catalina is kayaking. Rent a kayak for a few hours and go out into the water for a fun day at sea.

Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the beauty of the island as you get to spend time with the hundreds of fish that will be swimming around you. And with crystal clear waters, it will be easy to spot all the different types of fish in the waters of the island.

Tip: Looking for more of an adrenaline rush? There’s a parasailing company in Avalon as well. So instead of admiring Catalina’s beautiful coastline from a kayak, you could also do so from the air!

8. Enjoy the Good Food

Santa Catalina Island is known for its good seafood restaurants. The Lobster Trap is a favorite, but there are many options around Avalon.

Stop by Catalina Coffee & Cookie for a cup of coffee and a delicious sweet treat (including vegan options).

If you’re looking for the best homemade ice cream, go to Scoops.

And check out Descanso Beach Club if you want to enjoy a cocktail and some food by the beach.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

Although small, Catalina is filled with so many fun activities for anyone who visits the island. From the beautiful surroundings to the locals who so warmly welcome you in, the food, and the ocean.

Go to Catalina Island in the fall. It will be warm, the air is crystal clear, and the water is as warm as it gets in SoCal.

Very informative and interesting Thank you

Hi William, Even though it’s getting a bit cooler, I’d still say Catalina Island makes a perfect day trip. And it will be a lot less crowded than in summer! Otherwise a visit to Temecula for some wine tasting is great. Or a day trip to San Diego.

Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip (How to Spend One Day at Catalina)

View of Catalina Harbor from the Buena Vista Scenic Overlook off Wrigley Drive in Avalon Catalina

Looking to take a Catalina Island day trip? We’ve got you covered. Both of us have been to Catalina Island several times not only for a Catalina day trip but for overnight and multi-day stays too. We both are IN LOVE with Catalina and we think it’s one of California’s best-kept secrets (unless you’re a local, then you already know).

For the purposes of this guide, we are going to focus on Avalon, the charming 1 square mile town that feels like its stuck back in golden age of Hollywood as this was a haven for some of the biggest stars and where they would come to spend their free time 22 miles off the coast of California.

The other part of Catalina you can visit, but we must warn you there are much less things to do here, is Two Harbors. This is an even smaller town with about one restaurant and one store that’s more popular among those who are fortunate enough to have their own boat and come spend a day here.

For the regular visitors like us, you will want to spend a day trip to Catalina Island at Avalon which is one of the best day trips from Los Angeles , San Diego, or Orange County. And if you do have time to spare, see if our itinerary for a Catalina Island weekend trip will convince you to stay a few nights!

5 Fun Facts about Catalina Island

Drone view of Catalina Island in California

Marilyn Monroe was discovered by a photographer when she was working as a taffy puller at the candy shop downtown Avalon known as Lloyd’s of Avalon Confectionary when she was still Norma Jeane at the age of 16.

The Wrigley Family, the American chewing gum industrialists and owners of the Chicago Cubs baseball team bought Catalina Island in 1919. They brought the Chicago Cubs here for spring training, which also brought Ronald Reagan here as he was an announcer for the Cubs. The Wrigley family still helps preserve the island and has put in place protections to prevent over development.

Winston Churchill caught a record-breaking marlin on his visit to Catalina Island in 1929.

Catalina Island is also the location in the center of the mysterious death of actress Natalie Wood who died while aboard her husband Robert Wagner’s yacht. The only other people on board the yacht during her death were actor Christopher Walken and the captain of the boat in 1981.

The casino on the island, which was never actually a gambling hall and never will be, means gathering place and that’s exactly what it was on the island with a movie theater featuring the first motion picture with sound!

Soar through the sky with jaw-dropping views of the ocean on this 2-hour ziplining course starting at Descanso Beach Club where a shuttle takes you 600 feet up to the top of your course before zipping by at 35 miles per hour towards the ocean!

If this is going to be one of your big ticket items on your Catalina day trip, check out this ferry and zipline package that includes round-trip ferry tickets to and from Catalina Island as well as your ziplining tour.

along the coastline of Catalina Island in California on a snorkeling excursion

Check out a snorkeling excursion on your day trip to Catalina Island so you can swim around in the turquoise waters next to the giant, orange Garibaldi fish that swim along the shores here! This trip is short enough to squeeze into a day trip with Catalina Diver’s Supply.

The tour takes you to the northern point of the island for our guided snorkeling adventure. What’s great about this is that this is available all year round because they provide wet suits for all seasons, snorkel masks, and fins.

Or you can rent snorkel gear from Wet Spot Rentals near the ferry terminal. This is a short walk over to Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve, which is one of the best snorkel spots on the island!

We both  own this snorkel set which includes a mask, snorkel, ear plugs, flippers, and carrying bags which is also an option if you want to snorkel all around the island. Some of the beaches are pebbly, so it might be nice to invest in a  pair of water shoes too to wear under your flippers or to swim around with! These also fit in the snorkel set bag we bought!

Rent A Golf Cart

Megan and Scott enjoying a scenic golf cart ride on Catalina Island in California

You only have one afternoon on your Catalina day trip, so one of the best ways to cover the most ground quickly and without working up a sweat is by renting a golf cart. Golf carts are the cars of the island, seriously you won’t see many actual cars on the island but everyone drives golf carts!

If you’re short on time or sick of walking this is the perfect way to explore the nooks and crannies of Avalon. You can rent golf carts by the hour at a few different spots in Avalon.

Another option is to rent e-bikes from Brown’s Bikes, which you can easily cruise around on the same roads as the golf carts.

You will want to do the Scenic Loop with either option for multiple viewpoints and vistas to stop at along with breathtaking views along the way through roads surrounded by Eucalyptus trees and endemic plants to the island.

Check out Inland

Megan enjoying the incredible views of Catalina island interior

Some of the most gorgeous scenery on the island can be found inland. The inland of the island is difficult to fit in on a day trip to Catalina Island unless you arrange a guided tour with one of the many different options for exploring the interior of the island ranging anywhere from as little as 45 minutes to 3.5 hours.

Unless you’re doing a multi-day trek along the Trans Catalina Trail which covers the length of the island, which if you’re doing a day trip isn’t possible, you’ll need to be a part of the tour because the other parts of the island often require off roading vehicles as golf carts aren’t allowed on the interior of the island as its dangerous. Not to mention a special pass that allows you onto the inland roads that are hard to get even for locals!

Two great options include the Eco-Tour from the Catalina Conservancy takes you on a scenic tour through Catalina’s inland.

The other is joining a customized tour with Catalina Backcountry who will customize your private experience and pick spots on the island according to the time you have and interests! We used this option on more than one occassion and got to do some island exploring including insane vantage points and secret beaches on the back of the island. This is our favorite tour on the island.

If you’re lucky you might even spot some of the bison that live on the island that were left over here from a movie that was filmed here decades ago, endemic fox species that are as small as a house cat, or bald eagles on your journey.

Check out the Viewpoints in Avalon

View of Catalina Harbor and Avalon from the scenic viewpoint

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the insane views on your day trip to Catalina Island is by walking up towards the Inn at Mount Ada on Wrigley Road, the mansion historically owned by the Wrigley family that is now the most fascinating place to stay on the island with views of Avalon and the ocean below its hilltop location.

On your way up to the Inn at Mount Ada you can take a left turn as you’re approaching the top and find a quiet bench with unbelievable views known as the Buena Vista Point Scenic Overlook (on Google Maps). From here you have sweeping views of the Catalina Harbor and Casino below.

Catalina Mini Golf

Mini Golf in Catalina Island

Another fun activity you can fit in easily on a Catalina Island day trip is enjoying their fun mini-golf course! This 18 hole course is tucked away in a garden in the center of town! There are some fun trick shot options here and there are even little signs around the course that educate you on random facts about the Island!

Dining on Catalina

Antonios Pizza Catalina

You’ll work up an appetite at some point on your Catalina day trip, lucky for you the food scene is INCREDIBLE here! If you can plan your day trip to be here for both lunch and dinner, we recommend that!

After several trips to the island, here are some of our favorite dining options!

Maggie’s Blue Rose –  offers incredible Mexican food and margaritas overlooking Avalon Bay from their outdoor seating or enjoy your meal inside where it feels like a cozy cantina. Save some space when you order because you will absolutely crush the homemade tortilla chips and salsa that comes out!

Descanso Beach Club – This is one of my favorite places to eat plus a perfect spot to grab lunch on your day trip to Catalina Island if you want to sit back and relax on the beach with drinks and food!

Antonio’s Pizza – Grab pizza by the slice, or the whole pie on Summer Ave. There are actually two locations too. This is best if you want to grab food to take and eat somewhere else!

Bluewater Avalon – This spot wins for location as its located right on the water with a great outdoor deck to enjoy delicious food and drinks. We loved the beer selection on tap and the fresh ceviche and chips.

Steve’s Steakhouse – If you find yourself sticking around on your day trip to Catalina Island until dinner, this is a great spot! Located just above Maggie’s Blue Rose it was fun to find out that both Steve and Maggie are married in real life! (Small island love!) This is the best spot for fine dining on the island. We recommend their coconut battered shrimp!

Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co., – Perfect for a sweet tooth or a cold drink! We recommend the raspberry white chocolate cookie, the dark chocolate pistachio bark, and the strawberry hibiscus tea!

Lobster Trap – A local’s favorite and top choice if you’re looking for today’s fresh catch of seafood or a seafood pasta dish in this nautical-themed restaurant.

Other Catalina Travel Tips

weekend getaway to Catalina Island in California a couple looks at the ocean with the Casino in the background

Here are a few essential tips for your Catalina Island day trip and itinerary including what to pack and a few useful resources for booking your on-island activities.

If you’re prone to motion sickness you’ll want to come prepared for the ferry ride to and from Catalina Island. The ferry service is very smooth, but on days with the high wind the ride is a little rocky and those who are prone to motion sickness may feel it the worst. Come prepared with things that settle the stomach like ginger ale or purchase ginger chews , Dramamine for motion sickness , or try a motion sickness patch .

Come prepared with sunscreen too! We recommend, especially if you’re planning on getting in the water, to purchase reef-safe and eco-friendly sunscreen as many brands contain harmful chemicals to the ocean that people don’t realize. Unfortunately, the ‘reef friendly’ sunscreen label isn’t regulated so you often get brands who are ‘greenwashing’ or pretending to be safe for the environment even though they are not – which makes things confusing for the consumer.

A few of our favorite reef-safe sunscreen products include:

  • Kokua Sunscreen  – water-resistant zinc sunscreen that applies smoothly without white residue
  • Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen  – the Mineral line (white bottle with brown text that says ‘mineral’) is a clear, fast absorbing zinc-based sunscreen that’s great for sensitive skin and is sweat and water-resistant.
  • Thinksport Mineral Sunscreen  – We have been using this brand for years and love how easily it applies and is water resistant. They are also a bit more affordable.
  • Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen  – this sunscreen is not only reef-safe but it’s also super hydrating, this one is a little pricier so we recommend using this on the face and neck area since it falls under more of a skincare product as well.

There are plenty of small, charming boutiques on the island for any last-minute things you may have forgotten and even a full-on Vons grocery store too.

For booking on island activities, if you didn’t purchase in advance (which is highly advised for the summer season) there is still a chance you can book all kinds of island excursions from boat rides, submarine rides, snorkeling, island tours, Casino tours and more. If you want to try your chances of booking last minute you can at several spots around the island including the blue Pleasure Pier, the information and ticketing spot at the Catalina Island mini-golf, and directly at some attractions like the Casino.

If you’re visiting off-season like we did in March or April, chances are you’ll be able to book last-minute activities but keep in mind they don’t operate at their full schedule off-season, so it’s still recommended to book in advance.

And if you do decide to stay the night – which you should!! Check out our full guide to where to stay on Catalina Island including different accommodation options for every type of traveler.

Yes, a day trip to Catalina Island is worth it for a taste of its beauty, outdoor activities, and unique attractions. Just be mindful of time constraints.

A day trip to Catalina Island costs around $75 to $100 per person, covering transportation by ferry and basic activities. Additional costs may apply for specific experiences and tours.

To get to Catalina Island for the day, take a ferry from mainland California ports like Long Beach, Dana Point, or San Pedro. Check ferry schedules and book in advance.

To travel from Los Angeles to Catalina Island, take a ferry from ports like Long Beach or San Pedro. The ferry ride takes about an hour.

The ferry is the easiest way to get to Catalina Island since there are ports in Long Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach, and Dana Point. Other quick options include a short helicopter ride too.

The perfect catalina island day trip: 8 great things to do.

Santa Catalina Island (aka Catalina Island) is a little paradise just 28 miles from the city of Los Angeles. Many people agree that it’s a hidden gem in California that everyone should visit at least once.

The entire island has a population of just 4,100 people. It’s so small that you could drive around the town in 25 to 30 minutes because all you’d need to cover is 24 miles. While it’s not the kind of place you travel to for an extended vacation, it’s an excellent place for a fun-filled day trip.

catalina island

Catalina Island is known for activities such as scuba diving, wildlife excursions, charming shops, and tons of hiking possibilities. Each of these activities allows you to see the island’s natural wonders and gives you a day trip experience you will never forget.

How to Reach Catalina Island

The most popular way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. You can catch the Catalina Express ferry to the island from three ports: San Pedro, Long Beach and Dana Point. There are up to 30 departures per day and it only takes on hour to reach the island. They run year round. Or you can get the Catalina Flyer from Newport Beach to Avalon.

From Los Angeles, you can head to any of the first three ports. Long Beach and San Pedro are both about 25 miles from central LA. Dana Point is an hour drive south from LAX.

Another way to reach the island is by plane, but that’s obviously quite a bit more expensive. Helicopter service is available from Long Beach and San Pedro to Avalon. You can also charter a private plane to land on the island.

Avalon Bay

Catalina Island One-Day Itinerary

There are a lot of activities and you only have one day to do them all. Here is our suggested one-day Catalina Island itinerary.

EXPERT TIP: Get an early ferry! There’s one leaving at 6:00am from Long Beach and on the weekends there’s one leaving at 8:15am. The ferry is one hour, so leaving this early will give you a good start to your day. You can pack a lot more in this way. If you don’t want to go on a hike, you can take the later ferry at 9:50am and still get a lot done.

  • Go on a hike. We recommend the Garden-to Sky Trail Hike. 1 hour
  • Rent a golf cart for an island tour. 2 hours
  • Take the walk on the Avalon Trail to Casino Point. 1 hour
  • Hang out on the beach
  • Go ziplining
  • Go on a boat cruise at Descanso Beach.
  • Go to happy hour at Descanso Beach Club. 1 hour
  • Have a nice dinner. (2 hours)

Things to Do On Your Catalina Island Day Trip

Because Catalina Island is such a small place, a one-day trip is more than enough to see what it offers so you can decide if you want to return. There are also lots of great campgrounds and hotels if you want to make an overnight of it. Below are some great activities you can try.

1. Go on a Hike

Garden to Sky Trail

When you visit Catalina Island, one of the best ways to get acquainted with its natural beauty is to hike its many trails . The hikes available on Catalina Island feature gorgeous views, wildlife and plant life, and fascinating history about the island and its people over the centuries.

Some of the most popular hiking spots in California can be found on Catalina Island. There are dozens of hikes for all levels, from easy to difficult, and short to long. Please be aware that these hikes may be dangerous for the unprepared, so be sure to pack the appropriate provisions, plenty of water, and take all necessary precautions.

  • Garden to Sea Trail – This hike is a great one for day trippers. It’s an easy to moderate 2.8-mile loop trail that’s well maintained and well marked. The trail is all uphill until you reach the summit where you’ll have fantastic views over both sides of the island.
  • Little Harbor Trail – Little Harbor Trail is a 7-mile hike one way to Two Harbors, taking about 5 hours to complete. The Little Harbor Trail begins at the campground and follows Little Harbor Road or Banning House Road all the way to Two Harbors.
  • Two Harbors Lion Head Loop: 4.9 miles; 3 hours. This hike goes north to Lion Head and Camp Emerald Bay before bearing west and back down to Two Harbors. (Moderate)

2. Rent A Golf Cart

golf cart on the path

Unlike other islands that rent motorbikes so tourists can get around, Catalina is famous for its golf carts. It’s the best way to catch all the sites you plan to visit without worrying about hiring a driver. This is how the locals get around the island, since cars are not allowed.

The best golf cart rental shops are downtown; you must pay by the hour to use them. Each golf cart has a map of the entire island, so you won’t get lost while viewing the gorgeous sights around you.

If you’re wondering how long to take the golf cart, we suggest two hours because that’s enough to take a tour around the island and get some great pictures. The rest of your trip can be done on foot or by bus.

You can also hire a guide if you prefer to have someone take you by the hand and take you to all the best spots.

3. Walk Around Town

Avalon Bay

Heading to the downtown area of either Avalon or or Two Harbors. We like Avalon best if you want to explore the island on foot. It’s the cultural center of the island and bigger than Two Harbors.

Upon arriving and beginning your walk, you will see many restaurants, clothing shops, and an area where you can enjoy the night scene after the sunset. Walking around is a great way to relax and learn where everything is.

You might want to start with a walk to the Casino. The Avalon Bay Trail is a walk that’s just under a mile and will take about 20 minutes to complete. The walk takes you along Avalon Bay with great water views, over to Casino Point, where you can eat lunch, do a little shopping, or rent kayaks and paddle boards and get out on the water.

4. Try Snorkeling

If you are a good swimmer, snorkeling is the best way to see first-hand how beautiful and transparent the water is near this island. Our favorite snorkeling spots are Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve, Casino Point Dive Park, and around Descanso Beach.

The easiest way to get in on this activity is to find a dive shop that has guided snorkeling tours or rents snorkeling gear. This guided tour is 2 hours and leaves from Casino Point. At Descanso Beach you can rent gear from Catalina Island Expeditions .

5. Embark On An Underwater Cruise

underwater shot of fish

If you’d rather not go snorkeling, you can see some of the same underwater views that a snorkeler gets on a Catalina Island Underwater Expedition .

The company that runs this expedition is called Santa Catalina Island Company, and the tour length is 45 minutes to an hour. As you sit comfortably in a climate-controlled cabin on board a large boat, you’ll glide 5 feet below the surface in a semi-submerged boat to see a marine sanctuary and watch the fish swim from your porthole.

There’s live commentary on board as you float around, so you know exactly what you’re seeing, and how to get the best views.

6. Ziplining

ziplining

If you like a good adrenaline rush, you can see the beauty of Catalina Island from 300 feet high, feeling like a bird as you soar on the ziplines through the forest.

The Catalina Zipline Eco Tour , at Descanso Beach Club, is a 2-hour adventure with 5 zip lines to ride, at speeds approaching 35 mph. You’ll also learn about the island’s unique ecological history.

7. Happy Hour

beach drinks

We rarely go anywhere without doing some sort of food-related activity, be it a food tour, a bar crawl, or a cooking class. In Catalina Island there’s a happy hour tour that fits the bill. There are no current dates on their calendar, however, so you might just have to put together your own happy hour. That’s not difficult seeing how many places there are to go.

Many of the bars and restaurants in Avalon offer afternoon specials on drinks and sometimes food. Give these places a try (check their websites for hours):

  • Bluewater Avalon
  • Descanso Beach Club
  • Avalon Grille

8. Relax On The Beach

Descanso Beach

Avalon offers a number of great beaches within walking distance of the port, so you can fill your day with sand and sun, if you want to.

We’ve mentioned Descanso Beach a few times in this guide, and for good reason. There is a lot to do there, including a private beach with great swimming and lots of activities, like snorkeling, kayaking, and standup paddleboarding. There is a $2 fee to access Descanso Beach Club.

South Beach and Middle Beach are also good hangout spots, on either sides of the Pleasure Pier. There are lifeguards at both beaches during the summer, and they’re both within easy walking distance of restaurants and bars.

9. Have a Nice Dinner

Bluewater Avalon

The perfect thing to cap off your day trip to Catalina Island is a nice dinner on the waterfront. Yes, many of the places to eat in Avalon are touristy, but that’s what you went there for anyways. Just embrace it! You can find tiki cocktails, plenty of seafood, and a island vacation vibe to go with it.

Here are a few of the restaurants we recommend in Avalon.

  • Luau Larry’s : One of the most iconic casual spots in Avalon, Luau Larry’s has been around for decades and it’s right on the waterfront: location, location, location. Grab a tropical drink, put on a straw hat, and climb into one of their indoor cave booths.
  • Steve’s Steakhouse & Seafood: Lovely steak & seafood restaurant with seating overlooking the waterfront.
  • Bluewater Avalon: Great bistro with seafood and cocktails, plus a great view from the outdoor deck.

Where to Stay on Catalina Island

If you decide to stay over and do some of the additional activities you missed the first day, we can recommend these hotels in Avalon.

  • Aurora Hotel – 3.5-star hotel on the waterfront with a modern interior and some rooms with sea view balcony.
  • Pavilion Hotel – Just a block from the pier, this hotel is in the perfect location to enjoy your time in Avalon. They have a $40/pd/pr fee to enjoy the amenities, but you’ll get back credits for all kinds of services.

Despite being so small, Catalina Island has more than enough to do when you want to enjoy an island day trip. You will fall in love with the scenery and the laid-back locals who are always willing to help if you feel lost.

If you are considering staying on the island for more than one day, we recommend you try a one-day trip first to see if you like it enough to want to explore more. For most people, one day is all they need.

Making Every Trip a Treasure

A Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

Catalina Island Day Trip

Looking to escape Los Angeles for a sun-soaked day filled with adventure and exploration? Then a day trip to gorgeous Catalina Island is just what you need! This charming island paradise is located just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, making it an easy and exciting getaway.

In this guide, you’ll discover everything you need to plan the perfect Catalina Island day trip from start to finish, including how to get there, the best things to do during your visit, top tips for making the most of your time on the island, and more. Let’s get started!

How to Get to Catalina Island

The first order of business when embarking on your Catalina Island retreat is actually getting yourself to the island . Here are the two main options for making your way across the ocean to Catalina:

Catalina Island Day Trip

For most visitors, the easiest and most popular way to reach Catalina is via ferry. You can catch a ferry from ports in Dana Point, Long Beach, Newport Beach, and San Pedro. The ferry rides operated by the Catalina Flyer and Catalina Express take about an hour. Ferry tickets generally run $80  roundtrip. I recommend booking your ferry travel in advance since tickets can sell out, especially during the summer high season.

Catalina Island Day Trip

If you’re looking to get to the island faster or just want a more adventurous ride, you can also take a helicopter. Helicopter service is available from Long Beach and San Pedro. Flights take approximately 15 minutes one-way. Prices start at around $179 per person. Taking a chopper certainly makes for an unforgettable Catalina arrival!

How to Get Around Catalina

Catalina Island covers 75 square miles, so you’ll want solid transportation arranged to take in all the sights. Here are your main options for getting around during your day in paradise:

Do you need a golf cart to get around Catalina?

Golf carts are hands down the most popular mode of transportation on Catalina, but they’re not an absolute must. The main town of Avalon is small enough to tackle on foot if you’d prefer. However, a golf cart does make getting between attractions around the island quicker and easier.

Catalina Island Day Trip

Where can you rent golf carts?

There are numerous rental facilities in Avalon, like Catalina Island Golf Carts & Tours, if you opt for golf cart travel. Booking must be done 24 hours earlier if only you have a valid driver’s license. Their rates for 4-passenger golf carts are $110 for 2 hours.

Some hotels, like the Mt. Ada, include complimentary cart rentals with your stay. You can expect to pay $45-65 to rent a four-seater golf cart for a few hours. I recommend renting one for at least part of your day. Zipping around in a golf cart is part of what gives a Catalina trip its charm!

What to Do on Your Catalina Island Day Trip

Catalina Island Day Trip

Now for the fun part, how exactly should you spend your action-packed day on Catalina? With so many options for adventures, tours, shopping, beaches , and more, you certainly won’t run out of things to keep you busy. Here are some of my top ideas to help you make the most of your Catalina escape:

Rent a Golf Cart

As mentioned earlier, renting a golf cart is a popular Catalina activity . Once you have your own set of wheels for the day, you’ll have the freedom to cruise from sight to sight across the island easily. Make sure to drive along some of the island’s higher points for those incredible ocean views!

Walk Around Downtown

The main town of Avalon has a wonderful charm and energy about it. Wander along the vibrant downtown strip to visit the various shops, restaurants, and attractions. Be sure to stop at Lloyd’s Confectionery for saltwater taffy. This candy shop is iconic on the island!

Go Snorkeling

Snorkeling is one of Catalina’s main activities as an underwater playground. Grab some snorkel gear and gaze upon the area’s vibrant marine wildlife, from bright orange Garibaldi to swaying sea kelp. Lover’s Cove near the Casino and Descanso Beach Club are top spots to snorkel from shore. Or you can book a dedicated snorkel tour.

Catalina Island Day Trip

Take an Underwater Cruise

Speaking of witnessing marine life, going on a glass-bottomed boat ride is another excellent way to admire Catalina’s sea creatures and kelp forests. The semi-submersible Undersea Tour vessel allows you to travel THAT deep underwater for next-level exploration through porthole windows. How cool is that?

Zipline Across the Island

For thrill-seekers, soaring across Catalina while strapped to a zipline cable is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Catalina Zipline Eco Tour features five separate lines that let you take in the island from exhilarating new heights at speeds around 40 mph. What an unforgettable way to experience Catalina’s rugged landscape!

Catalina Island Day Trip

Lay Out on the Beach

Of course, no Catalina Island day trip itinerary would be complete without some good old-fashioned beach time. Settle in on the sandy shorelines around Avalon or take a quick shuttle bus ride to the secluded beaches of Two Harbors. Descanso Beach Club is a top option featuring upscale amenities like beachside dining and cabanas. Relax on the beach, and just don’t forget that SPF—the California sun is intensely strong!

Kayak Through the Waters of the Island

Paddling around Catalina’s pristine coastline in a kayak allows you to access hidden mini-beaches and soak in those glittering ocean vistas. Plus, kayaking grants you front-row seats to the island’s natural splendor that larger tour boats can’t reach. Sign up for a guided kayaking eco-tour or rent your kayak to chart your course.

Catalina Island Day Trip

Enjoy the Good Food

With all that adventuring around Catalina, you’re bound to work up an appetite! When hunger calls, Avalon offers no shortage of excellent dining establishments to refuel at. Dig into mouthwatering sustainable seafood dishes on the Harbor View Restaurant patio. Indulge in Spanish tapas and sangria at El Galleon Restaurant with its dreamy harbor views. Or keep things casual with burgers and beer at Luxe Beach Club Descanso. You can’t go wrong when eating through this island paradise!

What To Do In Avalon

Want to focus your day trip exclusively on vibrant Avalon? Here’s a suggested Catalina itinerary to make the very most of your time in this charming main town:

Catalina Island Day Trip

Catch a morning ferry from Los Angeles to Avalon

Most ferries depart between 9-10 AM, which gives you a perfect late-morning island arrival. Enjoy your coffee and a snack while watching the Californian coast fade into the distance!

Rent a golf cart for a few hours and drive around the loop to all the scenic viewpoints

Cruising around Avalon in a golf cart is a time-honored pastime. Drive along the winding coastal roads near the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens to fully take in those sweeping Pacific panoramas.

Walk around the downtown area, grab lunch at Bluewater Grill, and do a little shopping

Lose yourself for a couple of hours wandering Avalon’s quaint downtown district. Grab an oh-so-fresh fish taco lunch on the sunny patio of family-run eatery Bluewater Grill. Then browse the boutiques for the perfect Catalina souvenir—perhaps some salted caramel fudge or a dreamcatcher made from island botanicals.

Go to Descanso Beach Club and enjoy this beautiful and upscale private stretch of sand with cabanas and cocktails that will transport you to the Mediterranean.

Descanso Beach Club specializes in delivering luxurious yet laidback beach days. Sip your signature tropi-colada beach cocktail under a shaded cabana as you gaze out over those glittering waves lapping gently onto the sand. Pure heaven!

Book an afternoon activity, like a glass bottom boat tour, parasailing, scuba diving, or even sunset ziplining (It will be fun).

Still feeling energized after lunch? Then, tack an adventure tour onto your afternoon Catalina itinerary! Pick your thrill level; from mellow submarine sightseeing to adrenaline-spiking parasailing rides soaring 600 feet above sea level, this island truly has it all. That way, you can sightsee and put a check next to trying a new activity too.

Time to head back to LA!

After all the fresh air, sun, and excitement, you’ll surely be ready to nap on the ferry ride back to the mainland. Watch the sun dip down over Catalina’s mountains in the distance as you journey back to reality, reflecting on your island memories.

What To Do In Two Harbors

Looking for a slightly less touristy and more remote Catalina experience? Consider spending your day trip on the island’s western frontier, Two Harbors. Nestled between towering cliffs and the open ocean, this tinier village delivers big doses of wilderness and charm. Follow this recommended Two Harbors itinerary for an off-the-beaten-path Catalina adventure:

Catalina Island Day Trip

Take the morning Catalina Express ferry from San Pedro to Two Harbors

You’ll cover more ground if starting your day bright and early! The high-speed Catalina Express vessel whisks you to Two Harbors in just over an hour. Greet the day with salty ocean breezes whipping through your hair up on the open-air deck.

Head to Harbor Sands at Two Harbors

This tucked-away waterfront oasis beckons you with its red circular tent pavilions, and dreams of s’mores dance in your head. Made for lounging the day away on cozy rattan sofas and beach chairs while snacking to your heart’s content from their grill menu and honor bar system.

Rent paddle boards from Two Harbors Dive & Recreation Center

What better way to take in Two Harbors’ majestic rugged shoreline scenery than from atop a stand-up paddleboard? This fun water activity helps you find your balance—both physically AND mentally. Don’t be surprised if curious island foxes pop their heads up from shoreline bushes to glimpse you wobbling away on the water!

Go for an afternoon hike

Boasting over 20 miles of multi-use trails, Two Harbors serves up no shortage of stunning hikes. Trek out on the Hermit Gulch Trail for spectacular panoramic views of bison from the clifftops, or wind your way through the island’s unique flora along the Canyon Trail for a more woodsy experience.

Take the 6:30 PM ferry back to San Pedro

Still in vacation mode as you board the early evening ferry back to the mainland after your whirlwind Two Harbors daycation. Watch the pastel sunset over the island’s ridgelines for one last Catalina moment.

Quick Tips for Taking a Day Trip to Catalina Island

Catalina Island Day Trip

To ensure your Catalina day trip goes as planned, keep these tips in mind:

Choose between spending time in Avalon or Two Harbors

As outlined above, busy Avalon and remote Two Harbors offer quite different experiences. Choose which vibe suits your crew best. Families and first-timers may prefer easygoing Avalon, while adventurous couples could opt for Two Harbors’ peaceful escape from civilization.

Consider the best time of year for you to go

Summer is Catalina’s peak visitor season for good reason; expect sunny bluebird days and warm beach-prime conditions from June to  August. However, spring and fall offer their charms and smaller crowds. If you don’t mind brisk ocean temperatures, winter attracts whale-watching enthusiasts spotting migrating gray whales.

Keep track of the ferry times

Nothing ruins the island fun faster than missing your ferry ride back! Avoid logistical nightmares by always keeping your departure time at the top of your mind. Give yourself a generous buffer as ferry lines get busy in the afternoons.

Don’t overbook yourself

It’s tempting to jam-pack your Catalina itinerary trying to experience “everything”—but that’s a recipe for exhaustion! I recommend picking 1-2 key activities/attractions per visit. Whether that means kayaking and beach time or ziplining and shopping, quality over quantity makes for the most enjoyable Catalina trip.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

Craving a healthy dose of California cool? Then make Catalina Island your next sunny day trip destination! With its gorgeous shores, charming small towns, and wide offering of adventures, this island paradise ticks all the boxes. From ferry rides to good food and beach lounging, each detail of your Catalina getaway is bound to be fun. Just don’t forget the SPF; you’ll undoubtedly catch some iconic island rays!

So now that you’re equipped with all the fine details of drafting your visit to Catalina Island itinerary, the only thing left to do is pick a date and board that ferry!

Catalina Island Day Trip: Epic one day Itinerary (2024)

Affiliate Disclosure for Destination Checkoff

I am a California local, and I recently visited Catalina Island as a day trip from Long Beach, LA. I was blown away by how beautiful and postcard-perfect it is, especially the main Avalon area with the Catalina Casino building landmark.

Located just off the sun-kissed shores of Southern California, Catalina Island is so picturesque that you will feel transported to a coastal town in Italy.

We had so much fun on our day trip to Catalina Island. We rented a golf cart and drove along the island, taking in all the vista points and landmarks. We explored the cute boutique shops in Avalon and tried a few restaurants. The beaches and activities there are super fun, too!

With its stunning beaches, charming towns, and a host of outdoor activities, Catalina Island is a haven for adventurers, relaxation-seekers, and everyone in between.

Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip Itinerary

Catalina Island, or Santa Catalina Island, is only around 22 miles from the coast of Los Angeles. This gem of an island offers the perfect day trip, providing an escape from the mainland’s hustle and bustle.

Below is a perfectly planned Catalina Island day trip. Catalina Island is small, only about 76 square miles, and one day is just about enough to explore the top things to do on Catalina Island.

When you have more time, consider returning for a weekend on Catalina Island and enjoy the island life!

Let’s dive into our amazing Catalina Island one day itinerary!

Arrival at Catalina Island

You can reach Catalina Island by ferry or helicopter ride from Los Angeles or as part of a cruise stop. Taking a ferry from LA is the most common way to go to Catalina Island.

Ferry to Catalina Island

Catalina Island can be reached by a one-hour ferry from Los Angeles. You can catch the ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach, or Dana Point. Long Beach is the most common port to catch a ferry to Catalina Island.

➡ Check ticket rates and availability for Catalina Express Round-Trip Ferry Service from Long Beach or San Pedro

We were staying in Long Beach and took the morning ferry from Long Beach to Catalina Island. The ferry ride is scenic and provides beautiful views of the Long Beach coastline and the Pacific Ocean.

By Air: You can also take a helicopter ride to reach Catalina Island. This is the quickest way to reach Catalina Island, as it is a short 15-minute ride from LA.

By Cruise: Many cruise ships going to Mexico stop at Catalina Island for a day. This is another way for tourists to arrive at Catalina Island. The day we visited, a cruise ship was docked at the island; hence the island was way more crowded than usual.

Avalon ferry terminal in Catalina Island

Most ferries arrive in Avalon , the island’s main town. As you disembark, you’ll be greeted by the charming Mediterranean-style architecture and the relaxed island atmosphere.

Welcome to Avalon Sign in Catalina Island

Avalon downtown and breakfast

As you disembark the ferry, you will be in the town of Avalon, with the most beautiful view of the Island in front of you.

The Catalina Casino Building, The Green Pier, the Avalon Bay with the boats, and the surrounding mountains paint a stunning picture you could marvel at for hours! I absolutely can!

Crescent Ave is the main Avalon downtown Street, lined with restaurants and stores, and is right next to the ferry terminal. You can walk everywhere in the Avalon downtown; it’s quite small.

Start your day with a delicious breakfast at one of the local cafes in Avalon. Pancake Cottage, Original Jacks County Kitchen, and The Naughty Fox are great breakfast restaurants in Avalon downtown.

Pancake Cottage at Catalina Island

After breakfast, take some time to just soak in the views, and if you are like me, click a crazy amount of pictures. I just couldn’t get enough of the iconic view of the Catalina Casino and Avalon Bay!

Morning activity: Explore the Island on a golf cart!

For your morning activity, I recommend taking a golf cart tour or renting a golf cart and exploring the island on your own.

Golf Carts on Catalina Island

Did you know that golf cart is Catalina Island’s primary transport mode? There are very few cars here and almost no rental cars, and you don’t need one.

A golf cart is the best way to see this small hilly island. If this is your first time, I suggest taking a private guided tour.

➡ Check rates and availability for this 2-hour highly rated Private Guided Golf Cart Tour of Avalon – best way to see Catalina Island!

You can also rent a golf cart from Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals which is right next to the ferry building.

It took us some time waiting in line to get a golf cart. It was extremely busy the day we went due to the cruise ship’s arrival. But in summer, always expect some waiting to get a golf cart.

They have limited online reservations, but walk-in reservations are available. The golf carts are 4-seater or 6-seater.

Once you get your golf cart, they will also give you a map of the suggested loop route to explore the scenic vista points.

The entire route can be done in about an hour, but we booked the golf cart for 2 hours, considering the time needed for photos. The golf cart driving took a little getting used to, but it was fun.

Remember to hold on to the map they give you! We lost ours at half-way point and then had to figure out our way by asking for directions. There are a lot of one-way streets on Catalina Island, so be careful!

Below are some scenic vista points on the golf cart route. If you are taking a private golf cart tour, these will be covered for sure!

Lover’s Cove Scenic Viewpoint – Great stop near the main town with a small rocky beach. This is a great snorkeling spot as well.

3 Palms Scenic Overlook – Excellent viewpoint at an elevation and gives a bird eye view of Avalon. Really nice spot to capture photos with the famous view in the backdrop!

Views of Avalon Bay and Catalina Island from 3 Palms scenic overlook

Buena Vista Point Scenic Overlook – This was my favorite stop on the entire route! Walk down the steps and past an old gate to get to the scenic overlook which has the best views of Avalon downtown! I even saw a deer family here! Across the street is the Mt. Ada luxury hotel. You can also hike to this viewpoint from the downtown area. It is a 1-mile uphill hike.

View of Avalon town from Buena Vista Overlook

Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden – This detour takes around 30 minutes round trip to just reach the gate of the garden. As we had the golf cart for 2 hours, we drove to the garden. You will need more time if you plan to visit the garden.

Wrigley Memorial on Catalina Island

The garden features a historic Wrigley memorial tower and a variety of native plants, offering a tranquil escape with scenic views. You can also hike from the downtown area later to visit the botanical garden, but it is a long 3-mile hike one-way.

Catalina Chimes Tower – A historic landmark with stunning views of Avalon Bay from a different angle. The chimes can be heard every 15 minutes from the tower. The road leading to the Chimes Tower is a one-way road, so be careful of the route.

Chimes Tower on Catalina Island

Alternate Morning Activity: Adventure and Wildlife Tour

A large part of Catalina Island is protected, and visitors are not allowed to explore on their own. Taking a tour is the best way to explore the protected areas of Catalina and see wildlife like bison, deer, and even the Catalina Island fox.

➡ Check rates and availability for this 2-hour small group Inside Adventure Tour on Catalina Island and see some wildlife!

Lunch in Avalon downtown

After the golf cart adventure, you will be back in the main Avalon downtown area. The 2-hour golf cart excursion might have filled your heart with Catalina scenery and fueled your appetite!

Enjoy a relaxing lunch at one of the local restaurants or grab a picnic to enjoy by the beach. Fresh seafood is often a highlight of the island’s culinary offerings.

We ate at Antonio’s Pizzeria , which has good pizza and appetizers. They have patio seating by the water with epic views of Catalina Casino.

The Lobster Trap is a popular seafood restaurant and is open for both lunch and dinner. It gets busy at peak dinnertime. The lobster roll is recommended here.

Cafe Metropole is a great option for a lighter lunch, like sandwiches, wraps, smoothies, etc. Their sweet potato fries are amazing. Several options for vegetarians and vegans on their menu.

Afternoon: Water-based activity

In the morning, we explored the land part of Catalina Island. In the afternoon, try one of the water-based activities or tours offered here.

Take your pick from the Catalina Island water activities:

Semi-Submarine Tour – This is a great activity for families who are young for snorkeling. The kids will get excited to see fish come up to their submarine window.

Glass Bottom Boat Tour : Another great water activity for families and adults alike.

Kayaking / Paddle Boarding – Consider renting a kayak or paddleboard to explore the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island.

Snorkeling – Bring or rent snorkeling gear on the island and experience snorkeling. Lover’s Cove, to the right of the main downtown area, is a great spot for snorkeling. Snorkeling The marine life is diverse and colorful, making it a great opportunity for underwater exploration.

Time for an afternoon snack? Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co is great for coffee and delicious baked goods. Scoops Homemade Ice Cream has amazing ice cream and long lines! Well, it was a cruise ship day, so we had to wait in a lot of queues!

Late Afternoon: Beach Fun

Grab a snack and relax at the beach. Catalina Island has some of the best beaches in Los Angeles . The are two beaches in the main downtown area, Middle Beach and South Beach , one on either side of the Green Pier.

Beach on Catalina Island

Pick one that seems less crowded and soak in the sun. The water near the shores is shallow, and we saw a lot of kids playing in the gentle waves.

Another popular beach here is the Descanso Beach Club . This is a private beach where you can rent a chaise lounge or a cabana for the day. They typically range from $125 to$450 for the day with food and beverage service.

Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island

The signature drink here is the Buffalo Milk drink, which is a blended cocktail made with vodka, cacao cream, ice cream, and nutmeg.

More things to do in Catalina Island (if you have time)

Catalina Casino Tour – You can take a guided Behind the Scenes Casino Tour of the iconic Catalina Casino and learn all about this century-old art deco landmark’s history. Visit the ballroom and the theatre as part of the tour.

path leading to Catalina Casino

Ziplining – Catalina Island Zip Line Eco Tour runs 2-hour ziplining adventures near Descanso Beach Club.

Catalina Aerial Adventure runs a rope course aerial adventure with beginner, intermediate, and difficult level adventure courses.

Hiking – There are several amazing hiking trails on Catalina Island, like the legendary Trans Catalina Trail, which is 38 miles long and a multi-day hike. This hike is too long for a day trip, but there are other shorter hikes, like the Garden to Sky Trail, which is around 3 miles round trip and starts at the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden.

Two Harbors town – On another visit, you can check out the smaller Two Harbors town if you are interested in exploring more of Catalina Island. This smaller village is very rustic and laid back and not touristy. You wouldn’t find much to do in Two Harbors and probably only a couple of places to eat. Some people like Two Harbors as it is more rugged and relaxing. I would recommend exploring Avalon on your first visit to Catalina Island.

After chilling at the beach, grab some dinner if there is time before your ferry back to LA or before you head back to your cruise ship. Below are some great restaurants to try for dinner.

Restaurants on Catalina Island

Luau Larry’s – Restaurant with Hawaiian cuisine and theme and harbor views.

Steve’s Steakhouse and Seafood  – Great place for a steak and seafood dinner. Their second-floor seating has great views of Avalon Bay!

Bluewater Avalon is a waterfront seafood restaurant with great cocktails and a nice harbor view from the patio seating.

Make a note of your ferry’s or cruise ship’s boarding and departure ahead of time. We were in line 30 minutes before the boarding started.

Finally, it was time to say goodbye to the picturesque Catalina Island and head back to LA with beautiful memories of an incredible one day in Catalina Island!

Travel tips for Catalina Island

How to get to Catalina Island?

How to get around Catalina Island?

Most attractions in the main town of Avalon are within walking distance, making it a convenient way to explore. Renting a golf cart is a popular option, allowing you to explore the island at your own pace and enjoy views from scenic vista points. We rented a golf cart for 2 hours to explore on our own.

Renting bicycles is an eco-friendly way to explore Avalon and the surrounding areas, but keep in mind that the roads can be uphill around Avalon to get to most viewpoints.

When is the best time to visit Catalina Island?

Catalina Island is a year-round destination but the best time to visit Catalina Island is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and crowds are relatively smaller. These seasons offer ideal conditions for outdoor activities, exploring, and enjoying the island’s charm.

The summer months of July and August are great weather-wise, with long daylight hours, but it can be very crowded, and accommodation rates can be very high. Weekdays in summer can be relatively less crowded.

We visited on a Wednesday in June end, and it was crowded because a cruise ship had arrived that day. We still had a great time, so if summer is when you can go, you should still go.

This Catalina Island itinerary will show you the highlights.

Catalina Itinerary

Catalina Itinerary

Officially named Santa Catalina Island, this place is called Catalina Island or Catalina by locals. It’s a popular vacation spot for day trips, overnight stays, and weekend getaways alike.

At 22 miles long and 8 miles across, the island is known for wildlife, beaches, scuba diving and snorkeling, coastal resort towns like Avalon and Two Harbors, and Mount Orizaba, which reaches an elevation of 2,097 feet.

Catalina Chimes Tower

How to Get to Catalina Island

It’s easy to get to Catalina by ferry. The island is just 22 miles off the Southern California coast, and there are direct ferries from Long Beach, Dana Point, San Pedro, and Newport Beach. The crossing takes 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your departure point.

If you want to get here even faster, you can take a helicopter from Long Beach to Catalina. It’s an exciting way to arrive.

Catalina Ferry

Catalina Itinerary: Day 1

Along with a friend, I’m taking the ferry from Long Beach to Avalon in the morning. We arrive on the island just before 11am. We’re welcomed by the sight of the historic Catalina Casino and the many boats in the bay.

Catalia Bay

Where to Stay on Catalina Island

Our Catalina itinerary starts with a ride to our accommodation, the Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel . It’s not just any ride, though. It’s in a golf cart. The island is full of them, and they’re the preferred mode of transport for many. Visitors can even rent them for the duration of their stay on Catalina Island.

Catalina Hotel Pool

The golf cart whisks us up a hill above Avalon Bay to the Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel . A historic landmark built in 1926 by renowned novelist Zane Grey, it not only offers heritage charm, but also sweeping views over the city and its marina.

Our pretty room is decorated in seaside colors, and we have a balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Elsewhere on the grounds there’s a swimming pool, restaurant, and terrace from where we spot local deer grazing.

Catalina Island View

Descanso Beach Club

After getting settled in, we continue our Catalina itinerary by taking a golf cart down to Avalon (our hotel provides free rides for guests). From the waterfront we walk along the harbor and past Casino Point to get to Descanso Bay.

Descanso Beach Club

We’ve pre-booked lounge chairs on the sand at the Descanso Beach Club, the only beachfront restaurant and bar in Avalon. We’re welcomed with complimentary water and smoothies, which sets a good tone for the afternoon.

We have lunch at the beach club, enjoying delicious nachos and ahi poke bowls as we watch people snorkeling, parasailing, kayaking, boating, and swimming in front of us. It’s amazing how many water activities there are on offer here.

Descanso Beach

We take a dip ourselves, then continue our Catalina itinerary by heading back to Avalon to explore the city. Avalon is packed with colorful shopfronts, restaurants, cafes, and bars. There’s a harbor lined with beaches and a pier, and in the center of it all is a colorful tile fountain.

Avalon, Catalina

We walk along Crescent Avenue and down the streets running perpendicular to it, popping into clothing boutiques, art galleries, and shopping centers as we go. We walk out to the end of the pier and along the sandy beaches, taking in the boats and sun umbrellas on the waterfront.

Avalon, Catalina Island

Lover’s Cove

Eventually we meander out to Lover’s Cove, a stretch of shoreline with a little pebble beach. When we get to Abalone Point, we spot huge schools of tiny fish in the water. We stop to watch as larger fish jump out of the ocean to catch them.

Soon birds and a sea lion appear to join the feeding frenzy. It’s amazing to see it all up close.

Abalone Point, Catalina Island

Dinner on Catalina Island

We head back to our hotel for a sunset drink on the terrace, then continue our Catalina itinerary by walking into town for dinner at NDMK restaurant. This place is known for its fresh fish, some of which the owner catches himself.

We focus on the Japanese side of the menu and order everything from bluefin tuna sashimi to a rainbow roll and spicy tuna hand rolls. It’s all delicious.

Rainbow Roll

After dinner we can’t help stopping for dessert at Scoops, a shop selling ice cream, gelato, and other frozen favorites. A cup of Nutella-and-hazelnut gelato goes down a treat as we walk along the beach.

Drinks in Avalon

We’re not ready to call it a night, so we continue our Catalina itinerary by heading into a local tiki bar called Luau Larry’s for some island-inspired cocktails. I go for a classic margarita, and my friend chooses a pina colada.

We sip them in a booth surrounded by wooden carvings, tropical paintings, and people wearing straw hats. It’s a fun place to experience the Catalina nightlife scene.

Catalina Itinerary: Day 2

The next morning our Catalina itinerary begins with an early wake-up call. We pack our bags, check out of our hotel , and head off to do the Garden to Sky Hike .

Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden

Garden to Sky Hike on Catalina Island

We leave the hotel at 7:45am to take advantage of the cooler morning weather. It’s a 40-minute walk through Avalon to get to the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden, where our hike officially begins. We pay the entry fee, wave hello to the cacti, admire the memorial, and head up the Garden to Sky trail.

It’s 1.2 miles from the memorial to the summit, and the views of Avalon get better the higher we climb. 30 minutes later, we reach the top. We’re rewarded with the sight of the other side of Catalina Island. It’s beautiful to see the panoramic vistas, and we’re glad we woke up early to experience it all.

Garden to Sky Hike

Breakfast in Avalon

Back down in Avalon, we stop for breakfast at Cafe Metropole. This chic spot serves all kinds of breakfast foods, from bagels to avocado toast. We enjoy our meal at an outdoor table as we watch the world go by.

Cafe in Avalon, Catalina

Soon our Catalina itinerary comes to an end. We pick up our bags at the hotel , get a golf cart ride back to the ferry port, and hop on the boat for the trip back to Long Beach.

It’s been an amazing visit to the island , and a great way to spend 2 days in Southern California. I hope this itinerary has inspired you to hop on a ferry (or helicopter!) and experience this place yourself.

How to Plan the Perfect Day Trip to Catalina Island

Cat Harbor on Catalina Island

While it’s great to spend a full weekend or more exploring the island, Catalina makes for the perfect day trip from Los Angeles.

A little over 20 miles long, Catalina Island is big enough to offer a variety of activities and sights to see, but small enough to be able to visit for a day and still feel like you saw most everything that the island is known for, while still leaving a little room for excitement to return.

Casino for where to stay in Catalina blog

If you’re looking for a little guidance on planning your Catalina Island day trip, this post has everything you need to know!

From the best way to get there, how to get around once you’re on the island, and suggestions for what to do in both Avalon and Two Harbors. If you’re hoping to make the most of a day trip to Catalina Island, then keep reading!

Quick Tips for Taking a Day Trip to Catalina Island

Sunset over Cat Harbor

  • Pick between spending time in Avalon or Two Harbors. Since the two towns are far enough apart, I wouldn’t recommend trying to squeeze both into a single day trip. For first timers, I would recommend Avalon as there’s much more to do and also more ferry options, so you’ll have a little more flexibility.
  • Consider the best time of year for you to go . Summer is the busiest season, so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and squeeze more into a single day, I’d consider doing your Catalina day trip in the fall when the weather is beautiful (I think even nicer than in the summer honestly), but establishments aren’t quite as busy. Winter can be nice too, but the ferry doesn’t make as many trips during the day which gives you a little less flexibility for travel times, so plan accordingly.
  • Keep track of the ferry times. The last thing you want is to have to unexpectedly turn your day trip into an overnight trip. Keep an eye on the clock and make sure to arrive at the dock with plenty of time to catch your return ferry.
  • Don’t overbook yourself. If you’re only going for the day, you may be tempted to try to see as much of the island as possible, but I guarantee your Catalina Island day trip will be much more enjoyable if you aren’t rushing from one activity to the next.

Catalina Express arriving on Catalina Island

When embarking on a day trip to Catalina Island from Los Angeles, the Catalina Express ferry is going to be the easiest and most affordable option to get you there.

The ferry takes about an hour and there are three different harbors you can depart from , including San Pedro , Dana Point , and Long Beach .

If you’re coming from the LA area, departing from San Pedro or Long Beach will be your best bet, but if you’re located south of Newport Beach, then leaving from Dana Point makes the most sense.

Before you book your tickets, you’ll want to have decided if you’ll be spending your day in Avalon or Two Harbors, so you can book the correct destination on your ferry ticket.

The two towns are on opposite ends of the island, and travel between them can eat up quite a bit of time—not exactly ideal for a day trip—so you don’t want to end up on the wrong side!

If you’re going to the Avalon side of Catalina , you can depart from any of the three ports. However, if you’re going directly to Two Harbors, you’ll need to take the San Pedro route . You can expect to pay about $84 roundtrip for tickets on the Catalina Express.

Check out their website for up-to-date information on fares and schedules and to book your ticket.

If Newport Beach is a convenient location for you to leave from, The Catalina Flyer is another ferry option to consider.

It’s $78 roundtrip which is a little cheaper than the Catalina Express, but it only makes one trip a day from Newport Beach to Avalon, so you’ll want to be sure the times work for you. You can find out more detailed information on their website .

If you’ve got the funds and want to travel to Catalina in style, IEX Helicopters will get you from Long Beach to Catalina in under 15 minutes for about $300 per person.

How to Get Around Catalina

Map of Catalina Island

Golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation on Catalina, and they’re definitely the most efficient way to get around.

Do you really need a golf cart to get around Catalina?

The short answer is no. It’s not 100% necessary, especially if you’re planning on strolling downtown Avalon and relaxing on the beach all day. You can even make it to Descanso Beach Club and the ziplines on foot, though they’re a bit of a walk from the ferry.

I’d say, the best reason to have a golf cart is to drive along the upper roads along Catalina which give you the best overlooks and photography opportunities of the island. If you don’t care about that and you’re able bodied, you can probably skip it.

However, it is fun to rent them if only for a few hours to take in the views and just have some fun behind the wheel!

Where can you rent golf carts?

There are a few different golf cart rental companies in downtown Avalon to choose from. Catalina Island Golf Carts & Tours rents 4-passenger golf carts for $120 for 2 hours, and you should try to book at least 24 hours in advance.

For bigger groups, 6-passenger golf carts are available on a first come first serve basis.

There’s also Island Rentals which is really close to the ferry terminal and they don’t accept reservations so you can just show up when you get there. They charge $60 an hour plus a $60 deposit (note that they only accept cash) so about the same as Catalina Island Golf Carts.

You’ll need a valid driver’s license in order to rent a golf cart anywhere on the island, but the minimum age of the driver varies from company to company.

For Catalina Island Golf Carts, drivers are required to be 25, but for Island Rentals you only need to be 21. It’s worth double-checking the requirements before you go to make sure you don’t run into any last-minute issues.

What other transport options are there?

If walking on foot or freestyle golf cart exploring isn’t your thing, try this private guided golf cart tour so you don’t have to worry about it on your own.

What to Do on Your Catalina Island Day Trip

Two Harbors, Catalina Island

There is a lot to do on Catalina Island, so if you’ll only be there for one day, narrowing down your itinerary can be tough.

I have a full post dedicated to what to do on Catalina Island that is much more detailed regarding what to do on the island, but here are some quick itinerary suggestions that will make your Catalina Island day trip super memorable!

What to do in Avalon

If you’ve never been to Catalina before, I highly recommend staying on the Avalon side of the island. Avalon is a much livelier and bigger area than Two Harbors (the other main town on the island) and there are a bunch of restaurants, shops, and activities for you to choose from.

Plus, there are more ferry options going to and from Avalon, so you’ll have more flexibility with travel.

Parasailing on Catalina Island

Ideal Itinerary for 1 Day in Avalon:

  • Catch a morning ferry from Los Angeles to Avalon.
  • Rent a golf cart for a few hours and drive around the loop to all the scenic viewpoints (Buena Vista Point is my fave). Definitely bring your camera too! Catalina has no shortage of beautiful views.
  • Walk around the downtown area, grab lunch at Bluewater Grill and do a little shopping
  • Hit up Descanso Beach Club and enjoy this beautiful and upscale private stretch of sand with cabanas and cocktails that will transport you to the Mediterranean. Definitely try a buffalo milk cocktail while you’re there too. They’re delicious and the “Official Drink of Catalina Island.”
  • Book an afternoon activity, like a glass bottom boat tour, parasailing, scuba diving, or even sunset ziplining (this was super fun and just the right amount of adventurous for me). One of my favorite tour companies, Viator , has a ton of options to choose from or check out more tours here .
  • Hop the ferry back to LA!

What to do in Two Harbors

More remote than Avalon, Two Harbors is where you’ll want to go if doing all the typical touristy Catalina stuff isn’t too appealing to you.

It’s definitely quieter and more peaceful on this side of the island, and the landscape is wild and rugged, which makes it beautiful to explore and popular for nature lovers.

What to do in Catalina - Hiking in Two Harbors, Catalina

Ideal Itinerary for 1 Day in Two Harbors:

  • Head out on the morning Catalina Express ferry from San Pedro to Two Harbors. Note that San Pedro is the only port that the Catalina Express offers service to Two Harbors from, and there are less departure times than there are if you were going to Avalon.
  • Go straight to Harbor Sands at Two Harbors to book your beachside lounge chair before they fill up. Spend some time relaxing in the sun while ordering food and drink from the Harbor Reef Restaurant .
  • Rent paddle boards from Two Harbors Dive & Recreation Center. They also rent kayaks, bikes, and snorkeling equipment here if that’s more up your alley.
  • Go for an afternoon hike. You can stop by the Two Harbors Visitor Center for suggestions on different hikes to take, but the Ballast Point Loop is a moderate (although mostly uphill) hike where you’ll get some really beautiful views of Two Harbors! The Cat Harbor Overlook Trail is also awesome.
  • Take the 6:30 PM ferry back to San Pedro—this is the last trip of the day, so don’t miss it!

23 Best & Fun Things To Do On Catalina Island (California)

By: Author Jerric Chong

Posted on Published: February 21, 2022  - Last updated: October 16, 2023

fun things to do on Catalina Island

Renowned as a “Hidden Paradise in Southern California”, Catalina Island is the epitome of fun and relaxation.

Purchased in 1919 by William Wrigley Jr. (Chewing Gum Billionaire and former owner of the Chicago Cubs), the purpose of Santa Catalina Island was a means to create a unique travel destination for all.

Carrying that legacy into the modern era, Catalina Island remains one of the nicest and luxurious places to visit in California.

While there are plenty of wonders and fun things to do on Catalina Island, there are also a lot of fun facts that go along with its history.

For instance, a herd of buffalo was brought onto the island for a Will Ferrell movie, and still roam the island to this day.

So don’t be surprised if you see a few beasts grazing the fields!

Ronald Reagan also spent most of his younger years living on Santa Catalina Island, way before he moved to LA and became President.

One of the most interesting things, however, is that William Wrigley Jr. built a casino on Catalina Island that was never meant to gamble in.

Instead, it has been utilized as a Dance Hall and full-fledged Movie Theater since its inception and is said to have featured the first motion picture with sound.

With so many historical references and beautiful natural scenery, you would be hard-pressed trying to find another island off the SoCal coast as gorgeous as Catalina Island.

The possibilities on Catalina Island are infinite- and rightfully so.

With an average temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit all year long, you can find yourself doing a number of fun activities near or around the main Catalina Island attractions.

And don’t worry!

Even though there are a lot of fancy places to visit, you will have no problem finding cheap things to do on Catalina Island, or even free things to do when venturing around the mainland.

So sit back, relax, and prepare yourself for an adventurous journey through the historic, playful, and cultural island known at Santa Catalina.

Table of Contents

1. Descanso Beach Club

Descanso Beach Club

Descanso Beach Club

If you are looking for one of the most relaxing activities Santa Catalina Island has to offer, then look no further than the Descanso Beach Club .

The Descanso Beach Club is a private beach and cove that features a plethora of relaxing and romantic things to do on Catalina Island.

Known best for its incredible grade of nightlife, enjoying the California sun on a fully serviced paradise isn’t too shabby either.

When visiting Descanso Beach Club, one of the coolest things to do is partake in some of the outdoor activities, which include things like Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, and their infamous Zip Line Tour.

If you are boarding at the Descanso Beach Club, the Pavilion Hotel is a combination of Modern Luxury and a quaint island style.

Most of the rooms are equipped with a private balcony, so you can enjoy the sun or warm night sky anytime you’d like.

In general, the Descanso Beach Club is located near most of the relaxing areas of Catalina Island, is a great place to get a world-class experience.

No need to rush, the cabanas and massages will be there whenever you are ready!

2. Catalina Island Golf Carts

Catalina Island Golf Carts

If you have no idea what to do for fun today, rest assured, you will love this!

Having the ability to hop in a four-passenger Golf Cart and peruse across the island makes adventuring a bit more appealing.

Even if you need to upgrade to a six-passenger cart, this is a must do if you are looking to find your preferred section of the island, or simply looking to kill a few hours this weekend.

There are so many things to see on Catalina Island that considering a Golf Cart option instead of a more traditional form of transportation may make all the difference during your vacation.

3. Catalina Island Casino

Catalina Island Casino

Three generations have passed, and the Catalina Island Casino continues to shine gracefully.

Opening its doors in 1929, the Catalina Island Casino is the primary location and one of the main points of interest for any traveler.

Not only does the Catalina Island Casino embrace you with fun activities via social gatherings, but it is also one of the most romantic things to do if you are visiting with a significant person.

The Movie Theater is a sure way to get a few cuddles in, or if tours are more your style, feel free to book a “Behind the Scenes” tour as well.

Upon entering the Catalina Island Casino, you are greeted with high walls and artful architecture from tiled murals.

Belonging to the Wrigley family, the Casino has an awesome view of the ocean, which is very impressive during a clear sunny day.

If you are lucky enough (or plan accordingly) you might be able to attend one of the main events the Casino throws in their Grand Ballroom.

Address: 1 Casino Way, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

4. Parasail Catalina

Parasail Catalina

Ranging anywhere from $25 to $80, the Catalina Island Parasailing Adventure is another one of the best things to do on Catalina Island.

Soaring between 600 and 800 feet above the California grassland is an adrenaline rush of its own, but there are many things to see when looking across the Santa Catalina Island attractions from an aerial view.

That experience alone is like no other.

Not for the feeble-minded, but definitely worth it for the thrill seeker.

5. Bison Expedition

There is no shortage of places to go or stuff to do when you are visiting California, let alone Santa Catalina Island.

Of course, hitting the beach and bars may forever be on the to do list, but when was the last time you went on a Bison Expedition ?

While it is one of the more popular tourist attractions around the island, it is usually one of the best choices you didn’t know you needed to make while visiting.

A convertible hummer takes you around the natural wildlife of the island and grants you the opportunity to see amazing creatures and amazing views.

Having the ability to travel around the winding hills of the drier parts of Catalina Island will help you to appreciate the natural elements of California a bit more as well.

While the Bison and variety of wildlife inhabiting the dry lands are incredible to see up close, the ascension back down into Avalon is one of the most breathtaking views California has to offer.

6. Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden

Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden

In honor of William Wrigley Jr. the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden is located in the Avalon Canyon and is designed within a hike called the “Garden to Sky Trail”.

Cascading across thirty-eight acres of lush meadows, it is home to many endemic species of California plants, to which many are endangered.

There is also a tower that houses the actual Wrigley Memorial and is a must see if interested in learning more about one of the most successful men in history.

7. Catalina Island Helicopter Tour

Catalina Island Helicopter Tour

So yes, almost every city around California will offer some sort of helicopter tour.

However, the Santa Catalina Island landscape will leave you in awe every time.

During the Catalina Island Helicopter Tour, you will be at the mercy of some of the most incredible sights California has to offer.

You will be able to spot dolphins and whales that inhabit the protected waters of Channel Island, as well as soar over mountainous terrain while hearing the remarkable story of the island’s history.

The Helicopter Tour is one of the most fun things to do on Catalina Island and should be a top priority if you are simply looking for stuff to do, or trying to find different points of interest for your vacation schedule.

Mt Ada

Kit Leong / Shutterstock

Another one of the iconic tourist attractions is Mt Ada , as it used to be William Wrigley Jr’s mansion.

It is now a six-bedroom bed-and-breakfast for travelers who like to stay in luxurious atmospheres.

If you are looking to book a stay at Mt Ada, be sure to look for reservation months prior to your actual travel dates, as the Summer and Spring seasons will fill up rather quickly.

However, even if you are not staying at Mt Ada, you can still experience the grand presentation of the ex-mansion.

During the weekends, the Inn invites island-goers to a special brunch or lunch dining experience and is completely open to the public.

Address: 398 Wrigley Rd, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

9. Luau Larry’s

Luau Larry’s

Mary at T-Comms / Shutterstock

What would an island off of the California coast be without a tiki bar?!

With so many magnificent things to do around the island, Luau Larry’s will bring you back down to earth with good food and great drinks.

With a menu full of traditional bar offerings (wings, fries, etc.) you will have the much-needed comfort foods your soul desires.

However, we recommend ordering the “Wiki Wacker” which is a rum-based specialty of Luau Larry’s.

The best part is you will receive a palm frond to signify to the other beach-goers that you’ve been getting frisky with Wiki Wackers.

10. Bluewater Grill

Bluewater Grill

Bluewater Grill

With over 25 years’ worth of food and dining experience, the Bluewater Grill is a staple on Santa Catalina Island.

Bluewater Grill has a menu full of delicious seafood items and follows ethical and sustainable methods when it comes to its fishing practices.

While the restaurant prides itself on a classic preparation, they do add somewhat of a modern aesthetic to the overall cooking and style of the restaurant.

Address: 306 Crescent Ave, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

11. The Lobster Trap

The Lobster Trap

The Lobster Trap

Finding a place in California that sells $4 pints and daily food specials is already a rarity, but between 2 pm and 5 pm, The Lobster Trap  has a home away from home atmosphere that welcomes you with open arms.

One of the greatest things about The Lobster Trap is that you can enjoy good eats in the middle of the day, or during the early morning hours as well.

If you are traveling to Catalina Island for fun sometime after Labor Day but before July 1st, you can grab a burger and a beer for $11.

And without a selection of Lost Coast and Craft Beers, it is definitely worth the time to check out another great Catalina Island establishment.

Address: 128 Catalina Ave, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

12. Steve’s Steakhouse

Steve’s Steakhouse

Steve’s Steakhouse

Where there are great steaks there is usually great seafood to match, and Steve’s Steakhouse is no exception.

Not only are the panoramic views from the restaurant to die for, but the exquisite menu and elite preparation of every item on it make Steve’s Steakhouse a must do whenever you visit Catalina Island.

The food here is beyond top tier, and the atmosphere makes it one of the places to go for an authentic Catalina Island dining experience.

Address: 417 Crescent Ave, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

13. The Naughty Fox

The Naughty Fox

The Naughty Fox

Just think about “Tempura Fried Lobster Tail Handrolls” and then make a reservation.

Located in the Bellanca Hotel, the Naughty Fox is home to some of the best food on Catalina Island.

Not only because the ocean view outdoor seating is the most immaculate in town, but their menu is driven by a Master Chef consensus rather than a traditional beach vibe mentality.

The naughty fox will wow you out your sandals, and is one of the best places to eat near the coastline.

Address: 111 Crescent Ave, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

Looking for more excitement? How about checking out Monterey, Newport Beach, and Palm Springs? If you do plan the trip, here are some top things to do in Monterey , a cool list of what to do in Newport Beach , and the best list of what to do in Palm Springs .

14. Bistro at the Atwater

Bistro at the Atwater

Bistro at the Atwater

Right around the waterfront, you will find the Bistro at the Atwater sitting cozily under the California sun.

Unlike the traditional restaurants, you will find scattered near and across Catalina Island, the Bistro at the Atwater is an ideal place to pick up a picnic-style sandwich or salad.

There are also a number of sweet and savory baked goods available all throughout the day.

If you are looking to pick up something quick and light to eat on the go, Bistro at the Atwater may be just the thing you are looking for.

Address: 119 Sumner Ave, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

15. The Avalon Ball

https://youtu.be/dwf2I-5rIMU

Part of the Art Deco Society based in La, the Avalon Ball is a blast from the past.

Held in the Catalina Island Casino Ballroom, the Avalon Ball used to host 3000 people on its dancefloor as legendary artists blessed the space with incredible music.

Under a barrage of rainbow lighting, the tradition is still continued to this day!

If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind experience while visiting Santa Catalina Island, your list of places to go should include this 1920s recreation of vintage pastimes.

The entire space is approximately 10,000 square feet, so if you aren’t worn out by the time the event is over, it’s time you start turning it up a notch!

16. Three Palms Avalon Arcade

Three Palms Avalon Arcade

Three Palms Avalon Arcade

Let’s be honest.

When was the last time you went to an arcade?

Even if this is a “vacation”, no need to be overly attached to the sun every given second.

The Three Palms Avalon Arcade will give you the nostalgic feelings of joystick and button-smashing fun that you haven’t had in forever.

The games are going and the beers’ a flowing, so take a couple hours off before you get burned to a crisp!

Address: 205 Crescent Ave, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

17. Golf Gardens Mini Golf

Golf Gardens Mini Golf

Golf Gardens Mini Golf

Avalon’s Golf Gardens is the perfect place to bring your family, especially if you are looking to burn some of your child’s energy with fun and excitement.

If you are on Santa Catalina Island today or will be this weekend, it is a perfect time to visit their mini-golf course and take advantage of the California sun and cool breeze.

This mini-golf course is void of any silly clowns or goofy towers, instead, it is made for the mini-golf connoisseur.

Granted, there are a number of places to go that you can’t find anywhere else on the planet.

But for those longer stays on the island, it may be in your best interest to mark this place down on the calendar.

18. Enchanted City Tour

Enchanted City Tour

Ready for a few extraterrestrial stories and other mysterious adventures around Catalina Island?

Well, look no further than the Enchanted City Tour .

Throughout the island, there are multiple undertones of Alien activity, and some have even confessed to seeing UFOs in the California night sky.

Led by an experienced tour guide, you will hear history intertwined with excerpts from a book called the “Mysterious Island Catalina”, written by Jim Watson.

You’ll be seated comfortably in a coach and chauffeured around to various landmarks and scenic views, as the details of conspiratorial encounters are laid out to you piece by piece.

California is no stranger to these types of stories, so it’s no wonder that Catalina Island would be one of the points of interest pertaining to alien encounters or unexplained phenomena.

19. Nature Center at Avalon Canyon

Nature Center at Avalon Canyon

Nature Center at Avalon Canyon

California is known for having some of the most interesting parks and mountain ranges on the planet.

Established and maintained by the Catalina Island Conservancy, this flora and fauna-filled piece of nature contains history and passion all in one place.

The Nature Center at Avalon Canyon is made specifically for those looking to be enthralled by the wonders of the earth.

It is an interactive place that houses a ton of learning resources along with an amazing outdoor experience.

The Nature Center houses the first-ever Interpretive Center constructed by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation and tells the official story and natural history of Santa Catalina Island.

While there are self-guided tours around the facility, it is an interesting time learning about the rugged terrains and mountainous regions that juxtapose themselves across an infinite blue ocean.

The immersive geology of the Channel Islands that includes marine and land symbiosis are all well documented within the Nature Center of Avalon Canyon.

The entire concept of “ Biodiverse Hotspots ” (which are rare throughout the world) can be observed, explored, and studied right here on Catalina Island.

20. Catalina Museum For Art & History

Catalina Museum For Art & History

Catalina Museum For Art & History

California, in general, has a rich history built around sunshine and endless beaches.

When you are 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, it’s easy to forget all of the art that has either originated or flourished within the State.

If you are on Santa Catalina Island today or this weekend and are interested in the Arts, the Catalina Museum For Art & History  is one of the best places to visit.

From rare photographs to rotating exhibits featuring yesteryear’s most prominent artists, the Catalina Museum For Art & History is a great way to spend a few hours in bliss.

The Catalina Museum For Art & History is the ONLY organization that focuses its attention on the century-long history of Catalina Island.

The exhibits enclosed in the walls of the museum are always impactful pieces of Catalina’s evolution and present evidential references for everyone to view with their own eyes.

Some of the most recent exhibits consisted of the Titanic display that featured real artifacts, people, and stories that were incorporated with the “Unsinkable” Titanic, all the way down to Canvas Art displays from Gary Miltimore, that sit cohesively with the island vibes of Catalina.

So go out and explore the Island, but make sure to pay homage where homage is due.

Address: 217 Metropole Avenue, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

21. Flying Fish Voyage

Flying Fish Voyage

Agami Photo Agency / Shutterstock

Hopping on a boat and doing something marine worthy is a top priority when visiting Catalina Island (or any island, for that matter).

The Flying Fish Voyage keeps that door wide open for you and your friends to see something unique in those California waters.

On a vessel called “The Cyclone”, be prepared to venture out and experience a nighttime parade of flying fish!

Fair warning, however, these trips tend to sell out FAST, so if interested, it is recommended to book your tickets a month or two in advance.

The only thing faster than the ticket sales is the speed at which the fish fly out of the water!

Clocked at a whopping 37 miles per hour, the tour boats have to be equipped with powerful lights to encourage the fish to make their leaps.

While the busier seasons are between May and September when the ocean is the hottest, the act of attending one of these voyages is founded in the culture of Catalina Island.

The Flying Fish Voyage is another great way to experience a traditional component of Catalina Island’s history, as this nighttime fish tour started way back in the early 1900s.

22. Silver Canyon Pottery

Silver Canyon Pottery

Silver Canyon Pottery

Operating since 1988, Silver Canyon Pottery studio began as a simple production space.

Silver Canyon Pottery would later become invested in reproducing the tiles throughout Catalina, which, back in the day, were badly maintained and in terrible condition.

The “Catalina Tile Experience” allows visitors the opportunity to take a deeper look into one of Catalina Island’s most iconic companies and prominent reconfigures of the island’s aesthetic.

If pottery and landscaping interest you, you can also schedule a private tour for you and your family, and obtain an even more intimate understanding of Silver Canyon Pottery’s purpose and contributions to Santa Catalina Island.

Address: 22 Pebbly Beach Rd, Avalon, CA 90704, United States

23. Take a Walk Down the Waterfront

Take a Walk Down the Waterfront

Benson Truong / Shutterstock

Never forget that one of the best things about being on a sunlit island is that strolling down the beaches and through the parks is usually one of the free things to do on Catalina Island.

Catalina Island’s Avalon Waterfront is decked out with little shops and scenic restaurant views.

And while it is considered one of Catalina’s tourist attractions to simply walk outside, there is a multitude of pebbly beaches and diamond clear waters to walk across or dive into.

If you have yet to experience a Catalina Island sunset, it can be one of the most awakening experiences in your lifetime!

To take a few photos with the Casino and horizon as the backdrop is definitely a next-level idea to wrap it all up.

Need more vacation ideas? How about checking out Santa Barbara, Solvang, and Santa Cruz? If you do plan the trip, here are some fun things to do in Santa Barbara , some top things to do in Solvang , and some of the best things to do in Santa Cruz !

How To Get To Catalina Island

Whether you are coming from Long Beach , Newport Beach , Dana Point, or almost any area of Southern California, there is a multitude of ferry routes that can take you over to Santa Catalina Island.

If you are looking for the ultimate experience, you can book a 15-minute helicopter ride as well.

However, it is mostly recommended to hop on the Catalina Express as it tends to be the fastest boat option, as well as occupying most of the boat fleet that travels back and forth to Catalina Island.

If the Helicopter Ride was a little too pricey, you might also be interested in upgrading your Catalina Express travels to the “Commodore’s Lounge” where extra leisure is the top priority, along with free beverage and snack options.

Start Planning Your Trip To Catalina Island

When all is said and done, the mere act of being on Santa Catalina Island is a vacation on its own, even if you only utilize the free things to do.

The fact that there are so many cool things to do while visiting is just icing on the cake.

Catalina Island began as a billionaire’s dream and has transitioned into the paradise Wrigley himself would be very proud of.

Twenty-two miles off of the California coast sits a marvelous chunk of land that intertwines history, music, and nature all in one place, and continues to encapsulate the best parts of the West Coast.

While tourism is the vast majority of the island’s success, the grassroots components of Santa Catalina Island are what truly make this place incredible.

The array of tasty restaurants decorating the boardwalks and fantastic scenic lookouts are entrancing options for every visitor.

The architecture of the Catalina Island Casino and the jaw-dropping location it is built upon is by far one of the best pieces of Catalina Island.

If you happen to find yourself in, near, or around SoCal and you are looking for exciting places to go, the Catalina Island attractions will have you wishing you would have taken the trip sooner.

Our best advice?

Don’t worry about what to see or what to do and let the warm breeze send you in every direction possible.

While having fun is the main goal for every trip, taking the opportunity to balance the fun with a true appreciation for the history of Catalina Island will serve you well after the trip has come to an end.

Please enjoy your travels and take full advantage of every Catalina Island attraction there is.

At least now you know what to do on Catalina Island.

Happy travels.
