Something Rotten!

Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Something Rotten features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each with their own moment to shine. Throughout its Broadway run, the musical received a show-stopping standing ovation from audiences... in the beginning of the first act!  It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” so don’t miss your chance to bring this history-twisting tale to your stage.

Questions & Answers

Availability in nz.

Hi. I received an email previously to say Something Rotten is available for licensing, but this page says it isn't available in Aus/NZ.

Is there a planned date for release in NZ or is it touring professionally here soon?

Something Rotten in Australia

Hello, I noticed there hasn’t been an answer about when Something Rotten will be available for licensing in Australia since December 2020. Are you able to provide an update?

I am an up-and-coming theatre producer and would love to know what we need to do to get Something Rotten over here, I think it’d be a hit!

Will there be a Junior version in the future, or could you use help creating one? Our youth theater loves being able to put on a great show with less stress than what comes with a full-length production.

What is the expected release date for australia.

Now that Australia is no-longer a Covid 'hotspot', is Something Rotten likely to be re-released? Our regional area has had ZERO community transmissions and have comprehensive Covid Safe Plans in place. Our theatre is open and our company has launched two successful productions in the last 3 months adhering to this plan.

We're very keen to 'Hate Shakespeare'!

Is Something Rotten available in NZ for 2022?

Restricted in the us.

Since the website language says that Something Rotten is not available in the UK or Australia, I was wondering what the nature of restrictions on the title would be in the US? Are those restrictions any different for schools/companies in Manhattan?

Switch gender of Minstrel?

Would it be possible to have the Minstrel played by a woman? This would increase the number of feamle lead/featured roles from 2 to 3, making it much more producable for schools.

Does MTI have any approved cuts or changes that would make the show more appropriate for a traditional school's audience? I love the show, but I know there are a few lines that my administration would balk at.

When we did SPAMALOT, the company that held the licenses for it offered some alternatives for some of the more racy material.  Any chance MTI will do that for SOMETHING ROTTEN?

Is Something Rotten too racy for a high school production?

Something Rotten release

It says it releases "Winter 2020". Does that mean January/February 2020 or does that mean it won't be available until December.

GK Hardt Theater

book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick

“Anything you’ve ever liked in a musical comedy (and a few things you haven’t) just waiting to sing-and-dance you into submission.” —Vulture.com

“…For sheer escapism and unbridled joy, this musical is more fun and festive than a trip to the Renaissance Faire. It’s filled with lusty wenches and randy men in tights. It boasts vivid color, kinetic choreography, broad comedy laced with adult double entendres and loads of homages to other musicals. And it’s original—no juke box musical or rehash of a popular movie here.” —Chicago Theatre Review – Highly Recommended

“…a deliriously funny show.” —Variety

“Yep, this is a blockbuster.” —New York Post

“…loaded with crowd-pleasing showstoppers.” —The Hollywood Reporter

Opening Weekend Received Glowing Reviews

“We loved it! It was hilarious! I haven’t laughed that much in a very long time. The singing and dancing were outstanding!” — Joyce from Santa Rosa

A Goofy Spoof on a Shakespearian…Musical?

Here’s how Broadway bills this show: “Welcome to the ’90s—the 1590s—long before the dawn of premium tickets, star casting and reminders to turn off your cell phones.

Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rockstar known as ‘The Bard.’

When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time , Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL!

But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom brothers realize that reaching the top requires being true to thine own self…and all that jazz.

With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, the show is an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals—those dazzling creations that entertain us, inspire us and remind us everything’s better with an exclamation point!”

“No need to go to Broadway!” plenty of Playhouse patrons proclaim.  See the best for a ‘song and a dance’ (or a credit card swipe) right in your own neighborhood!

P.S.  Unlike the 1590’s when everyone stood, today your ticket buys you a seat.

In Renaissance England, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom find themselves struggling to keep their theater troupe afloat amidst fierce competition from the legendary William Shakespeare, known as “The Bard.” As Shakespeare prepares to unveil his newest masterpiece, “Romeo and Juliet,” Lord Clapham, a patron of the Bottom brothers, threatens to withdraw their funding unless they produce a new play by morning.

Nick despises Shakespeare’s success and fame, while Nigel, a romantic poet, is in awe of the bard’s genius. The brothers encounter a dilemma when Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, expresses a desire to help their troupe. Employing a Jew is illegal, posing a moral and legal quandary.

Meanwhile, Nick’s wife, Bea, has diligently saved money from her hard work. In desperation, Nick steals the money box and uses the funds to consult a soothsayer, Thomas Nostradamus, nephew of the famous Nostradamus. Nick seeks his guidance on the future of theater. Nostradamus reveals an astonishing prediction—actors will sing, dance, and act simultaneously in a revolutionary form called “a musical.”

In a twist of fate, Nigel meets and falls in love with Portia, the beautiful daughter of Brother Jeremiah. Nick warns Nigel against getting involved with Portia and then neglects to mention his encounter with Nostradamus and his incredible revelation about musicals. Nigel likes the idea and is inspired to write a play about brothers from Cornwall, but Nick insists that a play about the Black Death would fare better.

As tensions rise and the deadline looms, Lord Clapham deserts the Bottom brothers, leaving them in dire straits. Nigel, left alone to compose a new play, encounters Portia, who discovers his poetic talent and shares his admiration for Shakespeare. They decide to sneak away and see “The Bard” perform.

Amidst the chaos of the after party, Portia indulges in excessive drinking, adding to the comedic mayhem. Shakespeare, intrigued by Nigel’s talent, wants to read his poems. However, Shylock intervenes, chastising Shakespeare for attempting to steal Nigel’s ideas and scolding Nigel for his naivety.

As the Bottom brothers face mounting pressure and desperation, Nick returns to Nostradamus, armed with what remains of the money he stole from the box. He implores Nostradamus to reveal Shakespeare’s next big hit. However, Nostradamus, prone to misinterpretations, confuses various details, including “Hamlet,” leading Nick to write a preposterous musical based on these erroneous predictions.

Shylock has become the troupe’s new investor, offering financial support to keep their dreams alive. Shakespeare, stooping to new lows, disguises himself and auditions for the brothers’ play to steal it. Meanwhile, the troupe rehearses their new show, “Omelette: The Musical.”

Nostradamus, another unwelcome visitor to the theatre, also claims to be an actor and inserts himself into the troupe’s affairs.

Nigel sneaks away to see Portia again and reads her yet another heartfelt poem about his love for her. Anxieties about her fathers’ disapproval linger, but Portia assures Nigel that her father and Nick will come around once they witness the beauty of Nigel’s poetry.

Nigel, disheartened by “Omelette,” becomes inspired to write a play that turns out to be none other than “Hamlet.” Nigel visits the theater and excitedly shares his improvements to the play with Nick. However, an argument erupts between the brothers, allowing Shakespeare to seize the opportunity and steal Nigel’s efforts.

Amidst the chaos, Nick’s loyal wife, Bea, assures Nigel that they can still rely on him.

To a full house, the troupe performs “Something Rotten!” with a bombastic dance number featuring references to modern-day musicals. Towards the end of the number, Shakespeare reveals himself to the shock of the troupe and Nigel. They also discover Nostradamus’s true identity as a soothsayer, leaving them horrified.

Shakespeare sues the Bottom brothers. In court, Nick is sentenced to beheading. However, disguised as a lawyer, Bea intervenes and makes Nick confess to stealing money from the box. She cleverly argues that beheading him would be redundant since he has already lost his head. Striking a deal with Shakespeare, she negotiates their exile to America, where they will have a country house, and fulfil their dream.

Portia, having escaped the tower, arrives and renounces her father’s ideals. She joins the Bottoms, along with Shylock and Nostradamus, in their exile. The group arrives in America and addresses the audience, sharing the boundless opportunities found in the New World.

About the show.

Something Rotten is a hilarious mash-up of 16th century Shakespeare and 21st century Broadway.. Time Out New York hailed it as the funniest musical in 400 years. This musical farce is filled with word play, musical, historical and Shakespeare references. It's bawdy, boisterous and brilliant and that's just the opening number. Come and laugh with us about the creation of the world's first musical. In a post-pandemic election year, we all need to get out and laugh.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten!  Created by Gra mmy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, Something Rotten! was lauded by audience members and critics alike, receiving several Best Musical nominations and hailed by Time Out New York as "the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years".

"This is a big, brash meta-musical studiously fashioned in the mold of Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Producers and The Book of Mormon, loaded with crowd-pleasing showstoppers, deliciously puerile gags and an infectious love of the form it so playfully skewers."

Something Rotten! (2023)

will something rotten tour again

Book By Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell Music and Lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick Conceived by Karey Kirkpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, Something Rotten was lauded by audience members and critics alike, receiving several Best Musical nominations and hailed by Time Out New York as "the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years".

Something Rotten! Musical Opens Theater Season

will something rotten tour again

Audiences can return to the Renaissance and experience Shakespearean comedy with a modern twist as the Wabash Theater Department opens its fall season with the first musical to hit the Ball Theater stage in nearly a decade.

“Something Rotten!” opens Wednesday, November 1, and runs through Saturday, November 4, with performances at 8 p.m. each evening.

Tickets are free and can be reserved through the Fine Arts Center Box Office.

Written by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, “Something Rotten!” is set in the 1590s and follows brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom as they desperately attempt to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as The Bard. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theater involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, the duo set out to write the world’s very first musical.

Organizing one of the biggest productions in the College’s history—which involved securing support and funding, enlisting a choreographer and vocal director, uniting an age-range of cast members, an orchestra, and stage crew, and much, much more—was a complex but exciting endeavor for Director and Theater Professor Michael Abbott.

“It’s been a journey, easily one of the hardest things I’ve done,” said Abbott, who started working on bringing the satirical Broadway tale to campus nearly nine months ago.

“There’s nothing like a musical to make all the things that we have available to create theatre all in play,” he explained. “In the beginning, I tried to imagine all those things working at once, and it honestly seemed impossible. But after weeks of rehearsal and the crew understanding all the pieces that have to go into it, we have created something we’re proud of.”

“Something Rotten!” will be the first musical production at Wabash since 2014 when the theater department presented Tony Award-winning “Guys and Dolls.” Abbott said it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Kathleen Hickey, a dance lecturer from Purdue University, and Colleen Pingel, a private voice teacher at Wabash.

“I am so thankful for Kat and Colleen, and all the time and effort they have put in to make us better,” Abbott said. “It’s been amazing to watch them push actors outside of their comfort zone, especially those who aren’t dancers or who haven’t performed in a musical before. … The audience is going to be surprised to hear a level of singing and to watch a level of choreography, musicianship, and professionalism they’ve never seen here before.”

The cast includes Logan Weilbaker ’25 as Nick Bottom; Luke Fincher ’24 as Nigel Bottom; Tommy Oppman ’25 as Shakespeare; Alex Schmidt ’27 as Nostradamus; Julia Phipps (academic administrative coordinator to the Fine Arts Center) as Bea; Jim Cherry (associate professor of theater) as Brother Jeremiah; Elizabeth Hutson (Crawfordsville native) as Portia; Thomas Bowling (Crawfordsville High School) as Minstrel; Hayden Kammer ’24 as Lord Clapham and Max Hsu (language intern at Wabash) as Shylock. The male ensemble includes Bowling, Nathan Felix ’24, Alex Kindig ’26, Bennett Strain ’26, and Carl Suba ’25. The female ensemble includes Crawfordsville High School students Zoe Abbott, Paige Johnson, Elizabeth Turner, Katherine Novak, and Lisa Miellet (language intern at Wabash).

The production includes vocal director Colleen Pingel, choreography director Kathleen Hickey, orchestra conductor Scott Pazera, scenic and tech designer David Vogel, lighting designer Scott Olinger, costume designer Andrea Bear, and accompanist Cheryl Everett.

Drew Johannes ’23, a Wabash theater veteran actor who is working for the first time on the other side of production as the stage manager, admitted were many times he felt envious of the actors.

“Some nights when actors weren’t there and I got the opportunity to step in and read their parts, I really gave it my all,” Johannes, who will be completing his coursework in December, said with a chuckle. “It’s such a fun show. I am bummed I can’t be on stage as an actor, but I am even more happy to be able to learn everything that I have as stage manager. I’m thankful that Abbott trusted me to help put on a show this big with so many moving pieces.”

Johannes said the cast of “Something Rotten!” became a tight-knit family that encouraged and learned from one another over the last three months of rehearsals.

He said that contagiously enthusiastic culture will be on full display opening night.

“Audience members can expect lots of laughs and energy,” Johannes said. “They’ll experience happy moments, sad moments, sexy moments—this musical has everything!”

Weilbaker echoed Johannes and said the musical will have something for everyone to enjoy.

“I think it’s a great show for Wabash because it’s so accessible,” Weilbaker said. “The first lines that I say in the play are, ‘Oh noble kinsmen that royal blood and love do bind. Seek now thy own succor …’ and then ‘Who talks like this? Why can’t we just write like we speak?’ and I think everyone, especially people who aren’t theater-goers, will relate to that. It’s also a meta, a musical about making a musical, packed with fun references to other musicals that theater-goers will love.

“There’s no way you come to this show and don’t walk away with a smile on your face.”

How Jerry Seinfeld Parodied the Pop-Tart’s Origins Without Permission: ‘If People Are Dead, It’s Much Harder for Them to Sue You’

UNFROSTED - (L to R) Jerry Seinfeld (Director) as Bob Cabana, Adrian Martinez as Tom Carvel, Jack McBrayer as Steve Schwinn, Thomas Lennon as Harold Von Braunhut, Bobby Moynihan as Chef Boyardee and James Marsden as Jack LaLanne in Unfrosted. Cr. John P. Johnson / Netflix © 2024.

Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day. It’s also long been a fixture of Jerry Seinfeld ’s comedy — from “The Tonight Show” routines about Cookie Crisp to the Honeycomb and Raisin Bran boxes lining the shelves of his cupboards on “ Seinfeld .” His directorial debut, “ Unfrosted ,” brings the obsession full circle, chronicling the 1960s origins of Kellogg’s Pop-Tart.

“It’s really just candy disguised as a meal,” he says of the appeal of breakfast food. “And I really just want candy.”

Popular on Variety

Well, as a comedian, the last thing that would interest me would be the truth.

Were there specific 1960s brand icons or people that you wanted to highlight — even if you were going to make fun of them?

I remember reading when JFK assembled his Cabinet after he was elected in 1960, he said, “I don’t care if they’re political — I just want the best minds in America.” I thought, that’s a ’60s problem-solution idea, so we thought, who were the greatest minds of the ’60s? And the only people we knew who were bigger than Chef Boyardee were Jack LaLanne and whoever invented Sea-Monkeys, who turned out to be this ex-Nazi.

How tough was it to get permission to use their actual names?

Parody protects you with most of it. Thurl Ravenscroft was the real name of the guy who played Tony the Tiger — I knew I wasn’t going to beat that. Harold von Braunhut did invent Sea-Monkeys. But what did this lawyer tell us? “If people are dead, it’s much harder for them to sue you.”

As a child, my aunt worked for Grumman, for the man who was in charge of designing and building the LEM module. Grumman was on Long Island where I grew up, and I had all kinds of inside stuff on NASA, and I was obsessed with the space race of the ’60s. So I always wanted the movie to feel like a NASA program. That it had that level of seriousness, I thought would be funny.

What films inspired you visually? The Bowl and Spoon Awards evoke the awards ceremonies in “Boogie Nights.”

If you want to play a fun game with your friends to see who can name all the movies that we took scenes from — for example, the Pop-Tart scene you referenced, that’s from Ron Howard’s “Apollo 13.” One of my favorite scenes in movies is the way he shot the rocket taking off, and I thought, I want to shoot that same scene with a Pop-Tart.

You often use the word “dingus “ in the film, and every time it was mentioned, all I could think of was “The Hudsucker Proxy.” That’s another “print the legend” story.

“The Hudsucker Proxy” was definitely an inspiration for us. We took anything we liked from any movie, as we used to do on [“Seinfeld”].

How challenging was it for you to get your footing behind the camera instead of in front?

There were two things that enabled me to do it. One was the TV experience — writing and dealing with actors, I was very used to doing that. But making [“Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”] is really the thing that put me in a mindset of “I know how to direct now.” That show was, you take four hours of two people having coffee and turn it into a good 11 minutes. How do you do that? Well, you have to assemble pieces from different places and connect them into a story — and that’s what filmmaking is. You’re trying to get a charm bracelet that connects it all.

What was the toughest scene for you to coordinate?

The insurrection was brutal. I have no idea how to direct a riot. A lot of those people you saw in those costumes work as a mascot, so they were totally used to being Little Debbie or whatever the character was. But organizing that scene, I remember looking at Ben Affleck’s “Argo.” I thought he did a great job on that [riot] scene, so I was just trying to get the little pieces, and then you assemble them.

There are a couple of vintage “Seinfeld” line readings. How much have those reactions become part of your acting repertoire, and how many are deliberate callbacks?

[ Whispering ] “Xanthan gum” was a definite callback. But the snapping the fingers and going, “I can get rid of the three of you like that ,” I don’t know where that came from. That’s just acting silly.

You’ve spent your entire professional life refining jokes. How often do you come out of the gate with something that you just know is going to kill?

Having tackled this challenge, do you feel compelled to make more movies?

Not at the moment. I’m very happy that I did this. But it’s a little harder to do these things than you think. I didn’t think it would be, believe it or not, but man, they really wear you out.

It feels a little bit like Jerry and George going, “Oh yeah, you just write a pilot! It’s nothing.”

Yeah. But the way I do it is so stupid. Page 1, Act 1, blank sheet of paper rolled into a typewriter, to the last cut of the last edit. I don’t do it the right way, so I end up really paying the price for that. But I don’t know how else to do it.

How do you decide which projects you want to devote months or years of your life to?

That’s pretty simple. You just have to fall in love with it, and this was easy for me to fall in love with because I really did love it — the idea of returning to the ’60s as an adult, but you’re still in this silly kid’s world. That’s what I like to do.

A cornerstone of so much of your work is this cheerful misanthropy about the world.

That is a very good description.

How much is that a persona that you’ve cultivated through your work?

I have to spruce it up for public consumption, but that’s really me. Larry David used to always say I don’t get enough credit for my misanthropy.

Coincidentally, this comes out right after the end of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” How does it feel for the “Seinfeld” finale to be so controversial that Larry David felt compelled to re-litigate it more than 25 years later?

I don’t think we cared about the controversy, but if there’s a scab, we’re going to pick at it — I think that’s the tendency. I think it bothered him, what people thought of the “Seinfeld” finale. It bothered me too. But I let it go.

If you could pick one, what discontinued cereal would you like to bring back?

I think I’d give Rice Krinkles another shot. That was a real ’60s cereal. And then there was another one that was kind of frosted flakes with raisins and some other things in there.

Crispy Wheats ’n Raisins?

That was a great cereal. Outstanding recollection there — and a brilliant alchemy of ingredients.

If there was another food product from the past that you could tell the story of, what would it be?

You really got me going with Crispy Wheats ’n Raisins. I’m going to give that some thought.

Well, if you end up making a Crispy Wheats ’n Raisins story, I’d like a story credit, please.

You got it, Todd.

Kris Kim, PGA Tour

When 16-year-old Kris Kim arrived at TPC Craig Ranch earlier this week for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson , he had one goal in mind: make the cut.

That objective became a reality on Friday evening, as Kim carded a 4-under 67 to make the cut by two shots.

In doing so, Kim became the youngest player to make a PGA Tour cut since Kyle Suppa made the weekend at the 2015 Sony Open in Hawaii . He also became the youngest player to make the cut in CJ Cup Byron Nelson history, surpassing Jordan Spieth , who did so at 16 years, nine months, and 24 days.

Kim is currently two months younger than Spieth was at the time.

“It feels pretty good. I feel like I’ve played well over the last two days,” Kim said.

Kris Kim, PGA Tour, Byron Nelson

“Stayed pretty patient out there. Yeah, I guess it worked.”

Kim opened his second round by making four birdies over his first six holes, with a bogey at the par-3 4th sandwiched in between them.

He added another par-breaker at the par-5 9th hole to finish with a 4-under 32 on the front nine. By that juncture, he was well above the cut line at 7-under par for the championship and well on his way to making history.

But some adversity began to creep his way into his round. Missed opportunities at the 10th, 11th, and 12th holes kept Kim at bay, and then he dropped a shot at the par-4 13th. He drove his tee shot into the bunker there, which sent Kim back to 6-under. At that point, he was one shot above the cut, with nerves settling in.

“I guess I was,” Kim said with a smile when asked if he had some nerves down the stretch on Friday.

Kris Kim, PGA Tour, Byron Nelson

“It wasn’t too bad. It’s golf at the end of the day.”

He also revealed that he and his caddy ignored the leaderboards after the 15th hole, focusing solely on the present. They did not want to get distracted, nor did they intend to overthink the task at hand.

Pars at 16 and 17 followed before Kim stepped up to the par-5 18th, the second-easiest hole of the week thus far.

“To be honest, it being a par-5, it’s pretty helpful,” Kim said of how he felt on the last tee box.

“But, yeah, I mean, there is always going to be nerves when you’re on the cut line—whatever the tournament.”

Somehow, Kim managed to calm those nerves and make an easy birdie. He laid up on the 552-yard hole, sticking a wedge from 91 yards out to six feet for his third, setting up a golden opportunity. He cashed in on the final green, accomplishing the goal he set forth earlier in the week.

“I’m happy,” Kim added. “I can’t wait to get started again [on Saturday].”
