Dogs can really brighten your day. Whether it’s their goofy smiles or their joy in rolling around in grass (as long as its clean!), time spent with a four legged companion lifts spirits. And if it’s your dog that you get to take out on your errands or special meals, you can really feel like your day is complete. Why confine Fido to the crate while the rest of the family gets to spend quality time together? We’ve compiled some spots in New Jersey where your family dog is welcome. 

Our listing isn’t meant to be comprehensive – there are so many places to bring your pets. If we missed your favorite, please let us know in the comments below so we can add it here. We’ll continue to keep this list updated as we learn of more places you can take your dog in New Jersey.

15 New Jersey Dog Parks or parks with dog-friendly areas

So many towns have expanded or adapted parks to include off leash dog friendly spots. Fenced, and sometimes separated by dog size, these expanses of land are great for pups cooped in in the house all day or those without a yard of their own. It’s a great social spot for the owners too to take their dog in New Jersey.

North Jersey Dog Parks

• Bayonne -“Sirius” Dog Park in Bayonne scenically located next ot the Bayonne Bridge in Dennis P. Collins Park, is named in honor of a four-year old Yellow Labrador, “Sirius”, a bomb detecting police dog with the Port Authority who was killed on September 11, 2001. • Maplewood – South Mountain Dog Park in Maplewood is a great spot for your big or small dog (they have separate areas) to try out some agility tricks on the provided obstacles!
• Westfield – Echo Lake Park in Westfield is a fenced 3 acres with separate spaces for small and large dogs.
• Wantage – Wantage Dog Park is a Sussex County gem with 8 fenced acres, seating, and shade.

Central Jersey Dog Parks

• Highland Park – Donaldson Park in Highland Park gives you two separate areas for your pups to play off leash, or explore the rest of the park with its boat launch and pond.
• Wall/Manasquan – Orchard Park in Wall/Manasquan is home to rolling hills and fields but has a special contained area for your pups. Parking is nearby and a playground is in view. Bonus that it’s on the popular bike path that leads either to Manasquan for the beach, or Allaire State Park for the woods. 
• Somerset – There is a leash free area in Colonial Park, Somerset, with 3 fenced acres. Separate spaces exist for small and large dogs.
• Pennington – Rosedale Park Pennington keeps dogs engaged with play fountains, hills, agility jumps. Enjoy the trails and lake with your leashed dog as well.

South Jersey Dog Parks

• Egg Harbor Township – Open to members only, offers a sandy surface and agility equipment.
• Galloway – At the Imagination Station playground, off of the walking trail around the pond, is a gated dog park. It offers two areas for dogs to play: one for larger dogs and another for smaller dogs.
• Medford – Freedom Dog Park has 20 acres to roam, and a creek for splashing.
• Mount Laurel – Laurel Acres Park offers a smaller contained play space for your pups in picturesque Mount Laurel.
• Blackwood – Timber Creek Dog Park in Blackwood, Gloucester offers 9 fenced acres for your dog to explore.
• Delanco – Pennington Park has separated areas for both small and large dogs to play.
• Ocean City – 42,000 square feet for your dogs to play! Separated into three areas by dog size. Surface is sand, and there are water fountains, benches, and doggie play equipment.
• Vineland – located in a wooded area on Laurel Road across from the Lincoln Avenue entrance to Giampietro Park, this park opened in February 2020 and will be open from 6 AM to dusk.
• Washington Township (Gloucester County) – Registration is required to visit this dog park. No children allowed, and there are two areas for different sized dogs.

5 New Jersey beaches that allow dogs and New Jersey dog beaches

Many oceanfront beaches allow dogs in their off – season, which is roughly October 1 – April 1. Regulations change and certain sections of the beach may be off limits at all times. It’s always a good idea to have your dog on leash, though some towns may not require it which allows them to take a great jump in the waves. Included below are river and lake dog beaches too, because for some dogs ANY body of water makes for a great day out.

• Asbury Park Dog Beach – Dogs are permitted on Asbury Park’s 8th Avenue dog beach all day from September to May, and in the early morning hours during the summer season. Dogs can be unleashed, if controlled.
• Berkeley Township Dog Beach – Island Beach State Park allows dogs on the non lifeguarded beaches year round. There’s also a great trail you can take them on!
• Brigantine Beach – Dogs are allowed on Brigantine Beach between October 1st and May 29th.
• Manasquan Dog Beach – Fisherman’s Cove on the Manasquan Inlet in Manasquan is dog friendly for hanging out or swimming in the river. Watch the fishing boats go by and enjoy some quiet time with your pup at the Jersey Shore!

• Wildwood Dog Beach – Wildwood’s dog friendly beach is at Glenwood Avenue. You can’t miss it, just look for the giant fire hydrant sculpture! Spend the day at the beach with your dog and even swim in the ocean together.

7 New Jersey Restaurants That Allow Pets

Opinions can be mixed on the presence of pooches while eating a meal. If it’s a nice day to dine al fresco, here are some spots you can bring your pet to munch on those crumbs that fall off the table. Dog friendly locations will often provide a water bowl also and maybe even a treat or a dog approved dessert.

• City Place at the Promenade is a pet-friendly shopping and dining destination located along the Hudson River in Edgewater, NJ (225 River Rd).  In fact, each year the center hosts Woofstock + Friends featuring local pet-centric vendors, a red carpet Puparazzi Pooch Parade, and dogs and cats available for adoption. 
• Hungry Puppy is a pet store in Farmingdale that offers a free outdoor dog park with equipment to climb on and toys to play with.

Take your dog on a vacation in New Jersey

5 new jersey hotels that allow dogs.

A pet fee will likely be added to your room cost but it might cost less than paying a dog sitter. Find a place to stay with Fido at one of the following:

• The Bungalow Hotel allows some dogs in hotel rooms with prior permission. Their pet policy states, “Guide dogs are accepted with prior arrangement. Additionally, the pets under 30 pounds are allowed for an additional fee of $75 per night plus tax. Otherwise, no pets are allowed at the Hotel.” For more information call (732) 229-3700. • Touring the historic Princeton University grounds and need Fido to have a safe place to snooze? Sonesta Suites Princeton welcomes pets to their extended stay hotel. • Drifting Sands Hotel in Ship Bottom provides a relaxing spot for your beach vacation with your pup. They have 12 pet friendly rooms and are located just steps from the ocean and beach. Pets can roam and swim free from mid-October to early April. 

For a more home like experience, Airbnb or other rentals may allow pets. We love our Wildwood Crest rental that has a fenced yard so our pup can get some fresh air while we tend to all the after (and before) beach necessities.

New Jersey Attractions Open to Dogs

It sounds a little crazy but yes – you can take your dogs to some New Jersey attractions! These could be perfect for your beach getaway with your dog so they can do some sightseeing as well.

• Cape May Whalewatcher wants you to share your dolphin and whale experience with your four legged friend. Friendly dogs on leashes are welcome to cruise with the family. For more information call 1-800-786-5445
• Absecon Lighthouse. Dogs are welcome on the grounds and in the museum as long as they’re on a leash. The 240 steps are best left to humans though. For more information call (609) 449-1360.
• Historic Cold Spring Village . Pets are welcome on the ground, when leashed. Dogs cannot enter the buildings. For more information call (609) 898-2300
• Cape May – Lewes Ferry . Pets ride free and are welcome in the On The Rocks restaurants located in both terminals. Your dog can even play a FREE round of miniature golf with you while you wait for your ride. For more information call (800)643-3779
• Working Dog Winery . Kids and leashed dogs are welcome to enjoy the free music every Saturday at this Hightstown winery.  For more information call (609) 371-6000

In recent years there’s been a trend to open waterparks and pools to dogs on their final day of operation. Most of these are fundraisers for animal rescue groups and make for some adorable photos! In 2018 Morey’s Piers, Casino Pier & Breakwater Beach, and Summit Community Pool welcomed dogs for a splash in September. The Montreal Beach Resort in Cape May will welcome dogs on October 13 to close out their pool for the season, in a benefit for Animal Outreach of Cape May.

Tickets sell out fast so be sure to keep an eye on social media for this year’s dates.

New Jersey Farms That Welcome Dogs

Many New Jersey farms allow dogs to explore their grounds; maybe apple and pumpkin picking or a summer picnic is something your best friend would like? 

• Ort Farms in Long Valley allows dogs in the pumpkin patch. Call (908) 876-3351 for more details.
• Alstede Farms in Chester allows friendly, leashed dogs on the farm but not in the picking areas. Call (908) 258-6245 for more information.
• Hill Creek Farms in Mullica Hill allows dogs in the picnic area and near the playground. Call (856) 223-0028 for more information.

New Jersey Towns that Host Dog Friendly Days

• Keyport hosts an annual Dog’s Night Out. The 2019 date was in June.
• Red Bank’s Dog Days are held twice during the summer, in June and August. Enjoy contests, activities, vendors and veterinary help.
• Westfield’s “Dog Days of Summer” event offers a pet pool, parade, prizes and more. It will be held August 11, 2019.
• Tuckerton Seaport’s “Dog Days of Summer” was last held August 2019. Picnic and pet games are included in your ticket price! Dress up for a portrait with your pet and much more doggy fun.

Thank you for the list! We often take our dog to The Farm at Green Village ( garden center in Chatham Township). It is great place to buy indoor- and outdoor-plants. It is very dog friendly. Dogs are allowed inside the green house store, and the ground is beautiful with a large pond.

Thanks for the comment. We're not aware of any dog-friendly ski lodges or winter activities. Though I do imagine any dog friendly hiking trails would also be dog friendly for snowshoeing. - Jenn

A List of Dog-Friendly Beaches + Day Trips in New Jersey

Living in New Jersey, good weather means a great time for you and your pet . From hiking to swimming, or just enjoy the sunshine, there are tons of local places to visit with your furry friend. Read on for a list of places to go for a dog-friendly day trip — including beaches and other parks that allow dogs in New Jersey.

How to Pack Bags

• – Bring water for both you and your dog — and lots of it.

Tip: Do not give your dog ice water if it’s very hot. It can send your pup into shock.

• – Get sunblock for you and your dog.

Yes, dogs get sunburnt too.

• – Pack the poop bags.

Because cleaning up after your pet is a must wherever you go {ah-hem, Hoboken}.

• – Grab an extra leash.

One could break by getting caught on something while walking or from being damaged by the water your dog’s swimming in, other pets, etc.

• – Buy a tick key or tick twister.

Removing ticks is tricky because you want to make sure you get all of its legs. A tick key or the tick twister are great, easy-to-use tools to safely and completely remove ticks off you and your pet.

• – Include towels and wipes.

These aren’t just for cleaning — if your dog overheats put cool water on a towel and wrap it loosely around its neck

How to Make Sure Your Pet is Safe + Sound While Traveling/Outdoors

There are several things to watch out for while you’re traveling or playing with your pet outdoors.

Overheating and dehydration

• – Some warning signs include: Fast breathing, e xcessive panting, v omiting, d iarrhea, c ollapsing

If you see any of these signs, put a cool, wet towel around your dog’s neck and contact your vet ASAP.

• – Although many dogs receive flea/tick treatment, ticks can and will still latch onto your pets.
• – Examine your dog all over frequently. If you see a tick, do not pull it off with your bare hands. Instead, use a tick key or a tick twister to safely and effectively remove the tick. If you fear your dog has been bitten or that the tick is one of the species that carry Lyme Disease, contact your vet immediately.

Beaches That Allow Dogs

Asbury park.

The 8th Avenue Dog Beach

This dog-friendly beach allows licensed, non-aggressive dogs with adult supervision. Make sure not to bring your dog if he/she is in heat. Dogs may be off-leash but need to be controlled. 

Wonder Bar Yappy Hour

Wonder Bar hosts a fun happy hour for dogs and people. It’s open seven days a week. Your dog must be up-to-date on shots.

Fisherman’s Cove

Fisherman’s Cove Park opens at 7AM daily, year-round. Dogs must be leashed, and are allowed  on the front, east portion of the beach but not the back, west portion.

Ocean County

Island Beach Park

Island Beach Park’s main gate is typically open from 8 AM – 8PM. During summer weekends and holidays the park opens at 7AM. D ogs must be kept on a six-foot-or-less length leash and cannot  go on the swimming beach during the summer season.  Dogs also cannot go on the Spizzle Creek Bird Blind Trail.

Gateway National Park at Sandy Hook

The Gateway is located on the Inlet side of the Hook. Dogs must be leashed and cannot go on the eastern or Atlantic shore.

Places to Take a Hike with Your Dog

• Jersey City
• – Liberty State Park is o pen from 6AM to 10PM daily. Dogs must be leashed.
• – The Jersey City Reservoir is op en Saturdays from 10AM to 3PM, weather permitting. Dogs must be leashed.

Essex County

South Mountain Reservation

• – Dogs must be leashed except in the dog park. V isit the Essex County Parks website for dog park rules and regulations.

Long Valley

• – Hacklebarney State Park is o pen from dawn until dusk. Dogs must be leashed.

GO APPLE OR PUMPKIN PICKING

Apple and pumpkin picking are favorite fall activities for New Jerseyans—and a smattering of farms are dog-friendly.

Ort Farms (25 Bartley Road, Long Valley, 908-876-3351) is a fun, family-friendly spot with seasonal offerings such as pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn mazes, food trucks and special events on many weekends throughout the fall. Dogs are welcome at Ort Farms, as long as they are leashed, and they can even join their pet parents in the pumpkin patch. (Although pooches cannot take a hayride to the patch, they can walk there with their human pals.) Ward’s Pumpkin Patch (552 Route 17 North, Ridgewood, 201-523-0918) has a plethora of pumpkins, specialty gourds and squash in October, and then sells Christmas trees in the winter under the name Ward Farms. Pooches are welcome, as long as they are leashed.  

Windy Brow Farms (359 Ridge Road, Fredon Township, 973-579-9657) is a Sussex County staple known for growing over 45 different types of apples. The property allows leashed dogs on the farm, but only in outdoor areas. Dogs are not permitted inside the farm store, though if you’re there with a pal or family member, leave Fido outside and make your way in for some homemade baked goods.

Alstede Farms (1 Alstede Farms Lane, Chester, 908-879-7189) has been running since 1982 and is home to fruit and vegetable picking (including pumpkins), a petting zoo, hayrides and more activities for the whole family. The farm is dog-friendly, as long as canines are leashed and pet parents pick up after them. Dogs are not permitted in the picking rows.

BOND AT THE BEACH

Sure, the cooler months aren’t the typical time to head down the Shore—unless you’re a pet parent. The reason? As crowds thin and summer ends, several New Jersey beaches open up to dogs in the off-season.

Asbury Park lets pooches play unleashed on the Asbury Park Dog Beach between September 15 and May 15, as long as they are properly supervised. (During high season, pooches are allowed in the evenings and early mornings.) Also, between September 15 and May 15, leashed pooches can join their humans for a stroll on the boardwalk.

Brigantine allows dogs on the beach between October 1 and May 29. Leashes are required and should not be longer than 6 feet. Pet parents are expected to clean up.

Malibu Beach Wildlife Management Area in Longport, a beautiful and undeveloped beach, allows leashed dogs all year.

Ocean City beaches open up to dogs between October 1 and April 30, provided they are leashed.

A number of New Jersey state parks welcome pets to select campgrounds, with an additional $5/night fee.

Cheesequake State Park , Bass River State Forest , and Round Valley Recreational Area all welcome pets.

They are open year-round, so you can enjoy a camping trip with your pet this fall or winter.

As for the rules, domestic dogs and cats are the only animals allowed outdoors on park grounds, with a maximum of two pets per camping permit. Guests must fill out a pet registration and certification during check-in. But if you’re staying in a trailer or motor home, caged birds, reptiles and amphibians are OK. All pets must be vaccinated.

Pets are not allowed in buildings, on swimming beaches, in swimming waters and in campsites not designated for pets. Pet parents are responsible for their animals’ behavior and making sure pets are on leashes 6 feet or less; they can never be left alone.

The campgrounds’ quiet hours are between 10 pm and 6 am, so barking and other pet noises during these hours must be controlled. Any injuries should be reported to the State Park Police immediately. Find out more at nj.gov .

For wine lovers, nothing is better on a crisp fall day than time outside at a   vineyard or winery—and New Jersey has plenty that allow pooches. However, pet parents must be careful if dogs get close to grapes, as the fruit is toxic for pooches.

Beneduce Vineyards   (1 Jeremiah Lane, Pittstown, 908-996-3823) , a family-owned spot, offers wine tastings, live music and more. Its main varieties are chardonnay, riesling and gewürztraminer. Friendly, leashed dogs are allowed outside.

Auburn Road Vineyards (117 Sharptown Auburn Road, Pilesgrove, 856-769-9463) welcomes leashed dogs to the outdoor portions of the property and offers open-mic nights and performances, in addition to wine flights, tours and great food at the Enoteca Wine Bar.

Another dog-friendly spot to check out is Working Dog Winery (600 Perrineville Road, Hightstown, 609-371-6000) , which allows pups outside on the lawn.

TAKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME

Historic Cold Spring Village (720 US 9, Cape May, 609-898-2300) —which is on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places—offers visitors the chance to experience southern New Jersey’s past firsthand. An open-air living-history museum, it features a recreated rural town from the “homespun era. Although much of the village closes at the end of September, special events take place year-round. Plus, the brewery—which welcomes dogs and has heat lamps outside—is open all year.

Another favorite place to explore history is Batsto Village (31 Batsto Road, Hammonton, 609-561-0024) , located in the Wharton State Forest on what was once a site for iron ore and glassmaking. You will get an inside look at hundreds of years of American history, plus thousands of years of land use in the region. Dogs are welcome outside at Batsto Village.

A Guide to Dog-Friendly Beaches in New Jersey

Living in New Jersey, you know that summer means a great time for you and your pet . From hiking to swimming — or just enjoying the sunshine — there are tons of local places you can visit with your furry friend. We’ve rounded up some spots in New Jersey where you can take your dog — plus, we’ve covered some tips and suggestions for how best to care for your dog on these outings. Read on for a list of places to go for a dog-friendly day trip— including beaches and other parks that allow dogs in New Jersey.

How to Pack Your Bags

• – Bring water for you and your dog — and lots of it.

Tip: Do not give your dog ice water if it’s very hot . It can send your pup into shock.

• – Get sunblock for you and your dog.

Yes, dogs can get sunburnt, too.

• – Pack the poop bags.

Because cleaning up after your pet is a must wherever you go.

• – Grab an extra leash.

One could break by getting caught on something while walking or from being damaged by the water your dog’s swimming in, other pets, etc.

• – Buy a tick key or tick twister.

Removing ticks is tricky because you want to make sure you get all of its legs. A tick key or the tick twister are great, easy-to-use tools to safely and completely remove ticks off you and your pet.

• – Include towels and wipes.

These aren’t just for cleaning — if your dog overheats, put cool water on a towel and wrap it loosely around its neck

How to Make Sure Your Pet is Safe + Sound While Traveling/Outdoors

There are several things to watch out for while you’re traveling or playing with your pet outdoors.

Overheating and dehydration

• – Some warning signs include: Fast breathing, e xcessive panting, v omiting, d iarrhea, c ollapsing

If you see any of these signs, put a cool, wet towel around your dog’s neck and contact your vet ASAP.

• – Although many dogs receive flea/tick treatment, ticks can and will still latch onto your pets.
• – Examine your dog all over frequently. If you see a tick, do not pull it off with your bare hands. Instead, use a tick key or a tick twister to safely and effectively remove the tick. If you fear your dog has been bitten or that the tick is one of the species that carry Lyme Disease, contact your vet immediately.

Beaches That Allow Dogs

Keep in many that many beaches throughout New Jersey allow dogs during the off-season (the definition of which varies per beach), but these spots also allow dogs during the summer (though some have restrictions).

Asbury Park

The 8th Avenue Dog Beach

This dog-friendly beach allows licensed, non-aggressive dogs with adult supervision. Make sure not to bring your dog if he/she is in heat. Dogs may be off-leash but need to be controlled. 

Wonder Bar Yappy Hour

Wonder Bar hosts a fun happy hour for dogs and humans alike! It’s open seven days a week.

Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area

Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a spot where endangered and threatened wildlife live. It’s a major stop on the migration route for different species of birds. There are several different habitats, including dune, forest, and early successional fields. Dogs are technically only allowed here only on the off-season, which is from September to April, though it’s not uncommon to see dogs throughout the summer.

Stone Harbor

Dogs are allowed to play around in the sand or the ocean anytime during the off-season, beginning the day after Labor Day until the Thursday before Memorial Day. Other parts of Stone Harbor allow dogs between 7PM and sunset during the summertime, which is between Memorial day and Labor Day.

Malibu Beach Wildlife Management Area Longport Dog Beach

Malibu Beach Wildlife Management Area is open daily from 5 AM to 9 PM. This strip of beach is a nesting habitat for many different kinds of endangered birds. Longport Dog Beach (also known as Somers Point Dog Beach, Malibu Beach, or just Dog Beach) is a leash-free area where dogs can run around digging in the sand or play in the ocean. The beach is located at the base of the Ocean Drive Bridge on the Longport side across from the fishing pier. Between October 1st and through April 30th, dogs are permitted on other Longport beaches as well so long as they’re leashed.

Fisherman’s Cove

Fisherman’s Cove Park opens at 7AM daily, year-round. Dogs must be leashed, and are allowed  on the front, east portion of the beach but not the back, west portion.

Ocean County

Island Beach Park

Island Beach Park’s main gate is typically open from 8 AM – 8PM. During summer weekends and holidays, the park opens at 7AM. D ogs must be kept on a six-foot-or-less length leash and cannot  go on the swimming beach during the summer season.  Dogs also cannot go on the Spizzle Creek Bird Blind Trail.

Gateway National Park at Sandy Hook

The Gateway is located on the Inlet side of the Hook. Dogs must be leashed and cannot go on the eastern or Atlantic shore.

Wildwood Dog Park & Beach 

Dogs are welcome at the Wildwood beach to swim in the ocean or visit the dog park. Both the dog park and the beach are located between Glenwood and Maple Avenues. The dog park is open every day, and the dog beach is open in the daylight. This spot even has fresh water and clean up bags available for dogs. Dogs must be leashed at the beach, but they’re allowed to run free at the dog park.

Places to Take a Hike with Your Dog

Jersey city.

• – Liberty State Park is o pen from 6AM to 10PM daily. Dogs must be leashed.
• – The Jersey City Reservoir is op en Saturdays from 10AM to 3PM, weather permitting. Dogs must be leashed.

Essex County

South Mountain Reservation

• – Dogs must be leashed except in the dog park. V isit the Essex County Parks website for dog park rules and regulations.

Long Valley

• – Hacklebarney State Park is o pen from dawn until dusk. Dogs must be leashed.

Getting out with your dog for some healthy fresh air and exercise can add so much to the enjoyment of an outing. Day Trips with my Dog: Lambertville, NJ

Lambertville is definitely one of my favorite day trip locations in New Jersey. Based in Hunterdon County, it’s a walk-able town with lots of great restaurants, antique shopping, mom and pop shops, and hiking. But did you know it’s also dog friendly?

My husband and I took Peppy (aka #PeppytheDogNJ ) for an afternoon out in Lambertville to generally walk around and see what we could find to do. Turns out there lots, and Peppy got to explore this cute town.

We started at the Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn , a popular dining option that’s been around for three decades. Every dish features locally-grown and sourced ingredients. The building itself is restored 19th century train station situated on the banks of the Delaware River.

The Canal Side of the restaurant is dog friendly and your server will even bring over a dog bowl of water for your pup. I enjoyed a Summer Salad and my husband enjoyed a delicious burger. As the only dog in our section, Peppy received a lot of attention.

After lunch we walked around Bridge St, one of the main streets in Lambertville. We stopped at Lambertville Trading Co , a family owned coffee bar and specialty foods store. I enjoyed an iced coffee with coffee ice cubes which lasted me for a good portion of the day.

Post caffeine fix, we were ready to do some shopping. Some shops we stopped at included: – Zinc ( 74 Bridge St), an interior designer shop with lots of cool finds – A Mano Galleries (42 N Union St), located in an old 5 & Dime this cool gallery has great art, jewelry, accessories and more. – Panoply (48 N Union St), unusual, offbeat, rare and out-of-print quality used books . – Perch ( 53 N Union St) affordable home decor and unique gifts with farmhouse charm – Union Jack (52 N Union St), British goods including food, decor, and goods!

We also went antiquing! Lambertville has many antique shops, each cuter than the last. You will definitely find things you won’t expect!

We loved browsing the People’s Store . And thank you to A Touch of the Past antiques for even allowing Peppy to shop!

Lambertville also has lot of mom and pop food emporiums including Le Chocolate Box , Savour , and a Tomasello Winery location. Chocolate, cheese, and wine…sounds pretty amazing.

We also made a quick stop at O Wow Cow, which does not allow dogs inside, so we enjoyed our cones outside. For more on O Wow Cow, click here .

Before we left we HAD to walk the bridge from Lambertville to New Hope, PA.

One of the best things about the bridge, besides the fact that you can walk to these two great towns, and is that you can be in two places at once! I enjoyed being in NJ and Pennsylvania at the same time (as did Peppy).

We couldn’t have asked for a better day! Be sure to add Lambertville to you “to-do list” and pay them a visit. I know we’ll be back for more exploring! Share this:

If there’s one thing we can rely on, it’s the love and companionship of dogs. Since the start of the pandemic last year, canine adoptions have gone through the roof. With the rise in people staying at home, it’s no wonder. But now that warmer temps are in full swing, it’s time to get out of the house with your four-legged companion. Going on dog-friendly hikes in New Jersey is a sure way to get exercise for both of you and have a great time doing it. 

Jersey City Parks and Runs 

We’re lucky to have such great parks and hikes right around Jersey City. In fact, Jersey City is known for being one of the most dog-friendly cities for families. Maybe you’re working up to day trips and hikes, or you want to get out but stay close to home. Check out these great spots to stretch your legs and meet up for some doggy social-distancing. 

• Liberty State Park – It’s hard to mention dog-friendly without our own beloved Liberty State Park. If you haven’t been there yet this spring, get out 
• Lincoln Park Dog Run – Known for being well maintained, this park has its own separate area for small dogs who might be intimidated by the bigger set. 
• Sgt. Anthony Dog Run – This clean park has the advantage of being open 24 hours a day for people who might need to walk their pups at different times. 
• Hamilton Park – Dogs love the designated “off leash” areas while dog moms and dads socialize. 

Prepare to Hit the Trails

Before you and your dog embark on a hiking adventure, take some time to do your homework first. If you’ve never hiked with your pup before, check in with your vet to make sure they’re healthy and good to go. You’ll want to start off slow and short in order to build up stamina. And remember, your dog can’t speak up like we can when we’re getting tired or something hurts. Finally, check out this list of what to bring on a hike with your best furry friend. 

Dog-Friendly Hikes Near Jersey City

The following hiking areas are all under an hour’s drive from Jersey City. They’re the perfect distance away if you have a half day or want to get out and get back. Before you gas up and pack your snacks, you’ll want to brush up on your dog car safety . Making sure your best furry friends are secured well is the responsible thing to do and gives you peace of mind. 

• Mills Reservation – The loop trails at Mills total six miles and you can choose to hike trails ranging from very short to 1.5 miles. 157 acres of beauty contains trails that lead to a cliff overlooking New York City.  
• Watchung Reservation – If you and your pooch are into meeting horses and aren’t afraid of a little mud, Watchung is for you. Hike the 6-mile History Trail, or enjoy a self-guided Geology Trail.  
• Morristown National Historic Park – Hike over 27 miles of trails featuring historic sites from when George Washington and the Continental Army camped there. You’ll even see the remains of soldier huts built to house Washinton’s troops along the 2.25-mile Yellow Trail. 

Day Trips to Dog-Friendly Hikes

The next list will bring you from about 1-2 hours away from your home base for some fantastic dog-friendly hiking in New Jersey. If your dog is comfortable with car rides and you’re ready to do some more exploring this spring, try out these trails. 

• Ramapo Mountain State Forest – Choose from a variety of several hiking trails that vary in difficulty. Your rewards include a great workout and views of the NYC skyline. Keep your eye out for the gorgeous lake and a castle. 
• Kittatinny Valley State Park – If you’re the adventurous type, you’ll be in heaven in this rocky terrain. But don’t worry—there’s also less challenging trails to choose from. Keep your eyes out for old railroad tracks, limestone outcroppings and glacial lakes! 
• Ken Lockwood Gorge Wildlife Management Area – Some of the trails are for those who want a challenging trail or a longer route. The beautiful scenery along eight miles of trails can’t be beat. 
• Mount Tammany – This popular trail is a must for dog-hikers! You’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Delaware River Gap and moderately challenging trails. The trailhead is easily accessible off Interstate 80. 
• Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve – Many short and inviting trails to choose from here in Princeton. This preserve features open fields, lush forests and rocky streams. Great for all skill levels and all dog types! 
• Schooley’s Mountain Loop Trail – If “waterfall” is on your list of things to see, you’ll check it off here near Long Valley. Get a great hiking workout with Fido and stop for some bird watching while you’re at it. Schooley’s is also a great place to hike with kids, so make it a family outing this spring. 

Get Out and Enjoy!

There’s no remedy for what ails us like the companionship of a dog, fresh air and exercise. Prepare for your outings, do your research and explore the dog-friendly areas to hike near Jersey City this month. Your dog will thank you in more ways than one.
