Tour de France: Greipel victorious in Valence

Third stage win for German while Froome unchallenged in flat finale

Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) took his third stage win of the 2015 Tour de France on Sunday, winning a high-powered sprint in Valence after 183km. John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) was second, closely followed by Alexander Kristoff (Katusha). There were no changes in the top of the general classification as Chris Froome (Sky) finished safely in the bunch with all of his main rivals.

Tour de France stage 15 quotes: Greipel takes a hat trick in Valence

Greipel celebrates his third sprint win at the Tour de France

The final sprint came down to four riders: Greipel, Degenkolb, Kristoff and Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo). Degenkolb led in the final few meters, but Greipel turned it on and powered his way past. Sagan, who has finished second numerous times this Tour, didn’t even make the podium, coming in fourth.

The favourites were all in the first group, with no GC changes. Much of the rest of the field came over in smaller groups, with a large grupetto with the injured Jean-Christophe Peraud (AG2R) and Mark Cavendish (Etixx-QuickStep) coming in significantly later.

Greipel did not appear affected by his crash on Saturday, which left him with three stitches under his knee.

“It was a pretty tough stage, we were suffering from kilometre zero until the end,” Greipel said.

“The peloton never slowed down and I was hanging on as long as possible. It was dangerous with the cross winds and everything. But in the end the team put me in the perfect spot to launch my sprint. In the end, when I can see the finish, I can always find some extra power. I’m really happy that I could make it.”

Sagan padded his lead in the points ranking by being in the day’s escape group and winning the intermediate sprint, and then got additional points at the finish. Greipel took 50 points with his win, but is still 44 points behind.

How it unfolded

Team Sky warmed up as usual before the stage, but this time with a difference. Six gendarmes stood by to guard the British team, after Chris Froome was doused with urine yesterday, and other riders said to have been spit on.

The stage started high on a ridge, tackling three smaller climbs before plunging down to the Rhone Valley. One more climb awaited the field along the way.

The break group started forming only 10 km into the stage. At one point it ballooned up to 27 riders, but eventually settled down to a group of nine: Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), Michael Rogers and Peter Sagan (both Tinkoff-Saxo), Simon Geschke (Giant-Alpecin), Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEdge), Lars Bak (Lotto-Soudal), Michel Kwiatkowski and Matteo Trentin (both Etixx-QuickStep), and Ryder Hesjedal (Cannondale-Garmin).

The group never had much of a lead, not hitting the three-minute mark. Things were complicated slightly by rain and wet roads on the descent, but everyone made it through safely.

The only intermediate sprint of the day, and presumably Sagan’s reason for being in the break group, came at km 108. The Slovakian easily rolled through to gather the 20 points and further extend his lead in the green jersey ranking.

After that sprint, the gap dropped to around 1:30, with the next challenge of the Cat. 2 Col de l’Escrit coming up quickly.

Katusha was eager for Alexander Kristoff to win a stage here, and pulled the peloton along on the flat and up the start of the climb. The gap had dropped to 1:19 by the time Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) led the field over the top of the climb.

Mark Cavendish (Etixx-QuickStep) had quite early fallen back and was in a large group that was nine minutes down. Also in that group was Jean-Christophe Peraud, who was suffering from injuries from Saturday’s crash.

Trentin took off in the lead as the gap hit the one-minute mark, and that group started slowly dividing. Movistar was driving the field now.

Hesjedal gave chase a the others fell back to the peloton. It took nearly 10 km, but the two finally came together, some 45 seconds ahead of the field.

Once back in the peloton, Sagan punctured, and got a new bike. As he pulled to the side, a TV camera moto followed him and apparently got closer than Sagan though necessary, and the rider kicked at the moto. After the team car arrived and provided the new bike, the team mechanic threw a water bottle at the tv moto.

With 29.3km to go, the inevitable happened, as Trentin and Hesjedal were caught and the peloton moved on towards the hoped-for bunch sprint finish. The Peraud-Cavendish grupetto was now over 11 minutes down.

Lotto-Soudal, Europcar and Katusha shared lead duties going into the final 20km. The course ran alongside the Rhone river, with the peloton moving along as smoothly as the water.

BMC moved to the front, and the first attack came at just under 7km. First it was a Bora-Argon 18 rider, then World champion Kwiatkowski. But the BMC train ploughed them down.

Stybar attacked with 3.4km to go,with Lotto driving the chase. That chase only seemed to get serious with 2 km left, and Stybar was caught. Bora Argon attacked at the 1 km marker, but had no chance.

Kristoff, Degenkolb, Greipel, and Sagan fought it out, but it was the big German Greipel who pulled past his countryman Degenkolb at the last minute to take the clear win by three-quarters of a bike length.

The race: Before the men took to the Champs Élysées to ride 109.5 kilometers, the women rode their race, La Course by La Tour de France . This second edition was won by Anna Van der Breggen as rain showers fell on Paris.

Chris Froome cracked yesterday on Alpe d'Huez, but second place Nairo Quintana ran out of race before Froome completely ran out of gas. "I was on my absolute limits. I was dying a thousand deaths, " Froome told reporters after the stage. But he did preserve a lead of 72 seconds with just this flat, high speed stage to go.

Here's how Le Tour saw it:

The start proper of the conclusive stage of the 102nd Tour de France will take place in Ville-d'Avray where the very first Tour de France officially finished in 1903 before the final parade to Paris. Unless an accident occurs, the results are known: Chris Froome will be crowned for the second time on the Champs-Elysées with Nairo Quintana accompanying him on stage like two years ago and Alejandro Valverde occupying the third spot this time. The Kenyan-born rider is also the King of the Mountains. Like two years ago, Quintana is the best young rider and Peter Sagan will receive the green jersey for the fourth consecutive time. There'll probably a bunch sprint on France's famous avenue. André Greipel, Mark Cavendish, Alexander Kristoff, Arnaud Démare, Bryan Coquard, Michael Matthews, John Degenkolb and company have courageously fought in the Alps only with this grand finale in sight.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

The official start was at 4:45 PM, but no attacks went off. The riders took it easy, a lot of them in rain jackets. Because of the slippery cobbles, the judges were thinking about taking the race's final time before the the final sprint. All 160 of yesterday's finishers started today.

The race had a leisurely and careful beginning. After 23 kilometers, the average speed was only 26 km/hr. Sky riders were spending a lot of time at the front of the peloton.

After an hour of racing in the rain, the judges decided that the final times of the 2015 Tour de France would be taken when the riders first crossed the line on the Champs-Elysées at kilometer 41.

Sky led the peloton onto the Champs, meaning that if Froome finished the stage, he had won the 2015 Tour de France. For the moment, the rain had stopped, but the road remained slippery and dangerous. Froome's bike maker, Pinarello, became the Tour's most successful bike maker with eleven Tour wins, starting with Pedro Delgado in 1988. Peugeot is second, with ten Tour victories, starting with Louis Trousselier in 1905 and so far, ending with Bernard Thévenet's 1977 win.

Despite the weather, the crowds lining the road were huge.

Seventy-three kilometers into the stage, three riders were a half minute up the road: Nelson Oliveira (Lampre-Merida), Florian Vachon (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) and Kenneth van Bilsen (Cofidis).

André Greipel's Lotto-Soudal team had taken over the job of leading the pack, now zooming along at full race speed.

With just 23 kilometers left in the 2015 Tour de France, the breakaway trio was holding steady with a lead of 27 seconds. Astana's Andriy Grivko had tried to bridge up to the break, but he was soon reeled in by the fast-moving peloton. The streets were now dry, making for a much safer finish to the stage.

Lotto-Soudal held steady at the front of the main group, keeping the breakaway trio at a half-minute with just fifteen kilometers, two laps of the finishing circuit, to go.

A couple of kilometers later, the gap had been cut in half. And then it was down to just 10 seconds. In the back, Chris Froome had a piece of trash in his rear wheel and had to stop to get a new bike. With help from his team, he quickly rejoined the peloton.

Up front, BMC rider Rohan Dennis bridged up to the break, making four riders nine seconds ahead of the fast-moving pack.

With the start of the bell lap, Van Bilsen went clear of the break and was quickly joined by Dennis. But after just a few meters, all the escapees were rounded up for the big final sprint. In the final kilometers Lotto-Soudal lost control of the front as the other teams swarmed around them.

Emerging from the chaos, Alexander Kristoff led out the sprint, but André Greipel went right on by to win his fourth stage of this Tour. Bryan Coquard was second with Kristoff third.

2015 Etape du Tour information: the low-down

Etape du Tour last minute tips

The 2015 Etape du Tour route has been announced; and boy, what a doozy.

Whilst reader Paul conveyed his disappointment that the Etape won’t be the Modane-Alpe D’Huez TdF stage ( Stage 20 )—saying “How much of a crush to morale is a long downhill stretch with Telegraphe/Glandon next up”—this route will still be a moral crusher.

(And, by the way, L'Etape followed the exact same Modane-Alpe d’Huez stage just recently in 2011. For my recounting of that event, visit my 2011 Etape report . Riding downhill at 70km/h before a brutal ascent up the Telegraphe-Galibier was a heart-breaker.)

In the heat of the day (assuming a hot, summer Alps day), I reckon there will be a precipitous number of abandons.

So, what will riders face in Etape 2015?

2015 Etape du Tour information

The key 2015 Etape info:

  • When: Sunday 19th July 2015
  • Where: St Jean de Maurienne -> Sybelles-La Toussuire
  • Distance: 142km
  • Ascent: Approximately 3800m 4400m (!)

2015 Etape Profile

2015 Etape Profile

Here's the Strava route, nicely done by French weapon David Polveroni ( website , Strava ) who was kind enough to send me this.

Pay particular attention to the first climb of the day and David's KOM up it.

My thoughts

Preceding the cleats of the pros who undertake this Stage 19 of the TdF on July 24th, Etappers will undertake a stage which only has about 25km of relative flat. The rest of the day is climbing or ascending.

Riders will head uphill with about 1000m of ascending from the start line. This will prove to be the beginning of the finish for many people who no doubt will turn up on cold legs, underprepared, with lashing of derring-do.

And unfortunately for those riders who will undoubtably, and incredibly, turn up underprepared, the next ascent is a lonnnnnng yet picturesque one up the Col du Glandon then across 2.5km to the summit of the Col de la Croix de Fer.

I would much rather be facing the Glandon from the Maurienne Valley side as it’s very pretty, with lots of hairpins: find your tempo, turn some music on, and go. The Bourg d'Oisans side is brutal: incessant, steep, hot, hard ride.

Col du Glandon - Maurienne side

Col du Glandon – Maurienne side

Those last few kilometres from the pub at the Col du Glandon to the Croix de Fer look flat, but are most assuredly not.

And afterwards? It's not all plain sailing.

Well do I remember riding off the Croix de Fer in 2011, thinking I had an easy downhill to St Jean de Maurienne, only to discover—quelle horreure—I had a nasty little ascent up the Col du Mollard. (fortunately it’s only 400-odd meters) before a long descent into St jean de Maurienne.

Col de la Croix de Fer (after Etape 2011)

Col de la Croix de Fer (after Etape 2011) with Jan (r) the German Terminator

And lastly, we climb a mere 1100m up to the ski resort La Toussuire to finish.

“How hard will this really be?”

Some previous Etapes du Tour have really set benchmarks in terms of what is “hard”. For me, Etape 2010 really stands out: 180-odd km, 35 degree temperatures, and the Cols du Marie Blanque, Aubisque and Tourmalet. It was a shocking day in the saddle with some truly bastard climbs. (By the way, the 2010 Etape was one of the hardest rides I've ever done: here's my 2010 Etape report .)

And so, when I see an Etape of only 142km, albeit with climbing of 4500m, I’m inclined to be underwhelmed. And I’ll bet others will be similarly underwhelmed.

However, this is a foolish position, because Etape 2015 is going to be HARD.

When Etape 2013 (Annecy-Semnoz) was announced, plenty of people on forums pooh-poohed the route as being too easy. After all, there was only one major climb.

I'll hazard a guess plenty of people eyeballed that profile and wrote it off as easy.

Pity, that.

Because by one VeloNomad reader’s estimation, he noted that 4/5 people walked up significant sections of the final climb in 2013.

And reader Paul N also said:

Just been reading your bits you sent – Spot on –  all because the route didn`t have a behemoth or two en-route…many thought it was same as riding in the UK (for example), also forgetting 35C sun all day. Actuality was a day of mostly climbing anyway – even Froome looked knackered when the big boys did it.

So, how hard will Etape 2015 be? If you’re an Aussie or American (or someone who lives in a hot climate) and are used to 150km+ rides in the mountains on hot days, and have a lot of base hours in your legs, you might be ok. I say might, because, despite the fact some people do a weekend ride up their local 1/20, a ride in the Alps is on a TOTALLY DIFFERENT LEVEL.

And, if you’re not used to long days in hot temperatures riding for hours on end up big mountains…well, this is going to be incredibly hard.

But, the good news is, to mitigate the difficulty, all you need to do is prepare properly (more on this below).

Etape 2015 Training Plan

For most people (me included), a block of at least 4 months training will be needed.

And no, not weekend rides to the coffee shop sucking their buddies’ wheels for a few lazy kays. Or a few rides in the local hills.

Reader Warwick, who's on the Velonomad Etape training email list, commented:

I’m talking months of specific training with one sole purpose in mind.

And, so you know, I have a special training program written specifically for Etape du Tour.

There’s a saying in sales and marketing that companies who eat their own dog food tend to make good products. For example if you’re selling a SaaS accounting service (Freshbooks), then you’d actually use your own product internally.

So, with this training, you can be assured I eat my own dog food. This is the exact training I use for Etape (and big races, actually).

And at only $19, it’s utterly cheap insurance against the possibility of spending a wad of cash, turning up to Etape, then blowing up and having to walk. Trust me, it happens.

Etape du Tour Accommodation

Three recommendations here:

  • Portals like Hotels Combined or Booking.com
  • Tour package

Etape du Tour Bike Hire

Although taking your bike overseas is easy ( especially with this guide ), on this trip, with the fact I'll be taking trains and a goal of minimising worry and fuss, I’ll hire a bike.

For Etape, here are two recommended Velonomad bike hire partners:

  • France Bike Rentals

For Etape, you need insurance for:

  • Domestic bike cover that covers you when overseas (e.g. Velosure bicycle insurance)
  • Travel insurance that covers you and others (personal liability) for the trip, including when participating in events

For a list of insurance providers and what else you need to consider, read the in-depth guide to Insurance for Cyclists .

Prepaid Mobile Internet SIM

Good write up Tim (and loved your 2010 report :-). I am very conflicted because I won’t make it this year b/c I’ve signed up for the Haute Route Dolomites, but I’ll echo your comment that if you, dear reader, are considering an Etape, just do it, you won’t regret it. It will be an amazing day however it turns out. m

Hey Matt, the Etape 10 report is funnier than it all seemed at the time. A fair swap, HR Dolomites for Etape, I think!

I’m sure you know, but the Etape organisers have announced an Etape Australia in Dec 2016, so all you Aussies who don’t like travel or foreign food should register interest! 🙂

Hi Matt, yep, trying to get a media entry. Will have a special list/site up soon. T

The route for the 2015 Etape du Tour has been revealed this morning at the official launch of next year's Tour de France. As expected the course will see riders tackle a mountain stage, with the highlight being an ascent of the Col de la Croix de Fer at over 2000m.

The 2015 Etape du Tour will take place on Sunday 19 July. The route is the same as the pros will ride on Stage 19 of the 2015 Tour de France. Riders take on a 142km course starting in St-Jean-de-Maurienne and taking in three major climbs before a summit finish in La Toussuire.

The high point (literally) of the stage is an ascent of the 2067m Col de la Croix de Fer, which comes near the midway point, 62km into the course.

Entries for the 2015 Etape du Tour will open at 9:00 am (08:00 UK time) on Thursday 6 November. Registration is via the official Etape du Tour website: www.letapedutour.com .
