It’s just two days before Olly Murs invades the Manchester Arena for his three-night mini residency.

And to get you in the mood, we can give you an idea of what to expect from the gig from Olly’s show in Newcastle.

Murs, 30, who has just been confirmed as co-host of the X Factor, alongside Caroline Flack, is in the middle of his Never Been Better Tour, and heads to Manchester next.

Newcastle Chronicle writer Simon Duke was at the gig at Newcastle’s Metro Arena and here’s a snippet of what he had to say of Olly’s five-star performance. (WARNING: There are show spoilers, obviously)

“Heart Skips A Beat kicked off the string of hit singles and was closely followed by the likes of Dance With Me Tonight and Up which saw superb support act Ella Eyre return to the stage to take on the parts made famous by Demi Lovato on the studio version.

“And he then borrowed a few hits not of his own with Uptown Funk/Oops Upside Your Head ending a disco medley that also included Chic’s Le Freak and Good Times.

“The atmosphere was top drawer the whole night but it cranked up an extra notch when Olly made his way over the audience and onto a second stage in the centre of the arena to sing the stripped back Let Me In, which he co-wrote with Paul Weller, and the poignant Dear Darlin.”

You can read the full review here.

Look out for our full gig guide with pictures, video and setlist before Olly’s first show in the city on Wednesday and of course, our review.

Olly last played massive gigs in Manchester as Robbie Williams' support act for his stadium tour.

This is the former X Factor star during the show at the Etihad Stadium. He last headlined the Manchester Arena in spring 2013.

Album Review: Olly Murs – Never Been Better

olly murs never been better tour

Olly Murs has more than made it. Supporting Robbie Williams and previous studio album Right Place Right Time have resulted in Murs being able to fill arenas on his own headline tour last year.

Fourth studio album Never Been Better drops amidst the former X Factor contestant’s growing popularity. Although frequent collaborator Steve Robson is behind several tracks, other musicians like production team TMS and even The Jam/The Style Council frontman Paul Weller also feature.

Did You Miss Me? continues Murs’ affinity for funky retro sounds. It’s a quirky mix of 1980s video game synths, swinging brass and disposable drum machines that straddles the line between throwaway and light-hearted.

The Steve Robson-produced material clearly shows Murs in his element. Lead single Wrapped Up is already a UK Top 5 hit, despite (or because of) an infectious groove that is reminiscent of France’s hilariously awful Eurovision 2014 entry Moustache and Bruno Mars’ modern retro pop fan favourite Treasure. It’s hard not to imagine disco lights and roller skates, and also not get up and dance to this bop. Meanwhile, Murs’ earnest swagger makes Travie McCoy’s rap redundant. Work on a faithful cover of Earth Wind and Fire’s Let’s Groove for the recent BBC Radio 2 compilation Sounds of the 80s (reviewed by tours truly) has clearly inspired Murs on the smooth Can’t Say No. The descending bass and irresistible funk suggest other influences too, especially disco classics like Cheryl Lynn’s Got to Be Real and Diana Ross’ Upside Down.

Robson also worked on Hope You Got What You Came For, an emotional orchestral pop piano ballad and a classy tale of reconciliation. The processed vocal harmonies in the final 20 seconds are particularly devastating.  However, Beautiful To Me is too middle-of-the road and straight-forward, and its rather bland chorus sounds nothing new.

Seasons may be produced by pop producing maestro Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic. This track does recall a bit too much of Jason Mraz, from the laidback guitar strumming and eventual appearance of drums to the ‘you know I’m yours yours yours with every season’ hook. Nevertheless, it cleverly contrasts the tense electronic musical backing against the more positive lyrics about attachment.

English songwriting and record production team TMS take the brave decision to expose more of Murs’ voice on Nothing Without You . Why Do I Love You provides some pop edge with its murky synth bass and guitar wails. It has one of the best choruses on the album. The light rumbling percussion in the background even makes the track sound like a response to Beyonce’s Why Don’t You Love Me?

Murs’ country-tinged efforts are well-executed too. Stick With Me (co-written by John Newman, evokes the folksy, electronic euphoria of tracks like Wake Me Up with its bright brass riff; imagine if Calvin Harris did a remix of this! There is clear musical chemistry between Murs and guest vocalist Demi Lovato on the light country pop duet Up. The collaboration with Paul Weller Let Me In is a poignant closer to the album, making it perfect for falling asleep by the fire to.

Olly Murs is slowly cementing his sound on this important fourth album. There are moments where he plays it a bit too safe, particularly on some of the softer songs and deluxe edition bonus tracks. However, Murs is on the right track.

Daniel Rooney.

Unknown singer stands in for Olly Murs at last-minute as Take That support in Glasgow

Daniel Rooney stood in at 30-minutes’ notice on Friday night when Murs’ flight from London was cancelled

A Scottish singer has said he is “still on a high” after being plucked from obscurity to replace Olly Murs as the opening act for Take That at the last minute.

Murs was due to open for Take That at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on Friday but had to pull out after getting stuck in London when his flight was cancelled.

The Scottish presenter Ross King was watching Daniel Rooney play at the Radisson hotel opposite the arena when news broke that Take That were without a support act.

Impressed with his vocals, King recommended Rooney to his friend and Take That frontman Gary Barlow to fill the slot, the Daily Record reported, with only 30 minutes to get to the venue.

Rooney later shared a series of images and videos of him performing on stage before 14,000 fans on Instagram , describing it as a “crazy night”.

“Hardly slept, still on a high from last night,” he added.

“Thanks for everyone’s lovely messages about the gig and all the support so far.”

He also thanked King for spotting him at the hotel and getting him to the venue, adding: “Craziest 30 minutes ever.”

Rooney added: “Also a big thanks to the takethat lads for calming me down before the show and talking setlist tunes. Absolute legends.”

Barlow praised Rooney for stepping up to the plate, writing “this young man saved the day thank you” on Instagram with a photo of the musician.

Fellow band member Mark Owen also gave a “huge thanks” to Rooney for helping them out at the show, which is part of their This Life tour.

Murs apologised for cancelling his performance at short notice on Friday after experiencing flight issues all day.

He said he had been at London Heathrow from 11am but after “several delays” and an incident with a cabin crew member the British Airways flight was cancelled.

“So sorry to everyone at the takethat show tonight in Glasgow , unfortunately I won’t be there,” Murs, 39, said on X.

“Don’t think I’ve ever missed a gig before, am so annoyed!

after newsletter promotion

“But am now in a car heading up for our six-hour journey for the Saturday and Sunday shows right now.”

Murs had been updating fans throughout the day on Instagram story, sharing a video from inside the plane which was “stuck on the runway” before exiting and attempting to board another flight.

“I’m trying my best to get to Glasgow,” he said.

Murs later said: “Honestly, you couldn’t write this day.

“One of the cabin crew has fallen over and hurt herself … I hope she’s OK, but basically it has further delayed our flight. So we’re waiting for someone to come in to replace her.”

Murs described the wait as “so frustrating”, before announcing the flight and his show had been cancelled.

“I’m extremely gutted, I don’t think I’ve ever missed a gig that I can recall, especially of this magnitude.”

He later shared a video of himself being driven to Glasgow for his Saturday and Sunday performances.

A British Airways spokesperson said: “We’ve apologised to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans, which was caused by a technical issue with the aircraft.”

Olly Murs smiles as he finally makes it to Glasgow after being 'gutted' over missing gig

Olly Murs was spotted in Glasgow after arriving a day later than planned, with him having previously announced that he would miss a gig on Friday due to transport issues

olly murs never been better tour

Olly Murs was spotted heading into his hotel in Glasgow on Saturday after having missed a performance the previous evening which had led the "gutted" performer to apologise.

The singer-songwriter, 39, had been due to perform at the OVO Hydro arena in the city on Friday night as the support act for Take That on their latest tour. Olly was absent from the show following apparent issues with transport though.

He apologised to fans on social media and was replaced by performer Daniel Rooney shortly before the gig . Olly has since arrived in Glasgow ahead of subsequent shows scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

The former the Voice UK coach was seen arriving at a hotel in the area after his arrival. Olly was pictured wearing a pink t-shirt and a pair of grey shorts. He accessorised with a navy baseball cap and sported a pair of white trainers.

He was photographed carrying a colourful bag into the building and was seen smiling as he looked over his shoulder in one of the snaps. Olly had also confirmed his arrival in posts on his Instagram account.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, he wrote in a post to his followers: "Glasgow better late than never. I've finally arrived. See you all tomorrow and Sunday." Olly has since further posted about having made it to the city a day late.

He shared a photo of himself posing in a bathroom at one point. Alongside the selfie, which showed Olly modelling a pair of black boxers, he teased to his followers: "Feeling pumped and a little sun tanned for the show tonight."

The performer later posted a photo of the OVO Hydro arena itself and appeared to express excitement about the upcoming concert at the venue. He wrote in the caption: "WE HERE BABY. Show 16 on [Take That's new tour] tonight."

Olly had announced on Friday evening that he would not make it to the show at the arena that night. The BRIT Award nominee shared with fans on X, formerly known as Twitter , that his flight from London to Glasgow had been cancelled.

He wrote: "So sorry to everyone at [the show] tonight in Glasgow, unfortunately I won't be there. I have been at London Heathrow from 11am this morning for my flight but after several delays (check my Instagram) and then a cabin crew incident our [ British Airways ] flight got cancelled!"

He further commented in the tweet on the platform: "I don't think I've ever missed a gig before, am so annoyed!" Olly concluded: "But [I] am now in a car heading up for our 6hr journey for the Saturday and Sunday's show right now."

Olly had shared updates on his journey earlier that day, including having posted footage of himself at the airport on his Instagram Story. He had teased: "Just at the airport [...] We're coming to Glasgow tonight. Who's ready? Cause I am."

He however later told his followers that his flight had been delayed by two hours. "I have no idea if I'm gonna make it tonight but I'll keep you guys posted if anything changes. Not looking good at the minute but fingers crossed," he stated.

The performer went on to share that a subsequent issue at the airport had led to further delays. Later announcing that he wouldn't make it, he said: "Flight has just been cancelled. So I'm so so sorry guys. Looks like I'm not gonna be able to ... well, I'm not gonna be at the gig tonight in Glasgow. "

He added: "I'm extremely gutted. I don't think I've ever missed a gig that I can recall, especially of this magnitude. So listen, have the best night with Take That, of course - it's their show anyway. So just big love to anyone that was coming to see both of us. I'm sorry I can't be there."

More recently, Olly shared footage of himself in the back of a car and he told fans that he was on his way to Glasgow for the shows over the weekend. He again apologised for his absence from Friday night's show whilst he was travelling.

He said in it: "So sorry I can't be there tonight. Gutted, but you're in for a treat. What a show [it] is. Gutted I can't be there guys, I'm so sorry. Nothing I can say or do really. Out of my hands. Weren't my fault. So yeah apologies."

Olly Murs cancels opening gig for Take That as unknown replacement picked from local pub takes his place

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Olly Murs was forced to cancel his opening gig for Take That at the Hydro arena in Glasgow on Friday (3 May) minutes before he was due to go on stage.

Event organisers had to replace the former X Factor runner-up with an unknown musician plucked from obscurity from a local hotel bar with just 30 minutes notice.

Daniel Rooney had been performing at the RED Raddison Hotel when Scottish host Ross King spotted the artist and recommended him to Take That’s Gary Barlow after the “Heart Skips A Beat” singer cancelled.

Murs had shared his journey to Glasgow with his Instagram followers as he documented delays with his flight from Heathrow.

He apologised to disappointed fans as he wrote, “So sorry to everyone at the @takethat show tonight in Glasgow, unfortunately I won’t be there, I have been at London Heathrow from 11am this morning for my flight but after several delays (check my Instagram) and then a cabin crew incident our @British_Airways flight got cancelled!”

He continued: “Don’t think I’ve ever missed a gig before, am so annoyed! But am now in a car heading up for our 6hr journey for the Saturday and Sundays show right now.”

The 39-year-old was forced to take a car up to Glasgow as he was due to perform for three nights with the band. Take That had reunited for their UK tour, which will continue in Europe over the summer.

Meanwhile, Rooney who did not expect to open for the record-breaking group who have topped charts in the UK, spoke of his surprise at the opportunity.

“It’s hard to take it in, it’s really surreal,” he said. “I’m just having a chance now to look at my phone and talk to my Mrs and parents and stuff. It was fast – 20 minutes before going on I met Gary and the guys and we talked about what songs to do.”

He added that although “some people were not happy about Olly” he was able to get “some good singalongs with the crowd etc and it felt like they were really behind me.”

And although he had to abandon his gig at the hotel bar at the Radisson, he added that employees were happy for him.

“I still had 45 minutes to go at the hotel but what can you do with something like this – but they’re really happy for me.”

Fans were supportive as some dubbed Rooney “better than Olly Murs” while others were in awe at his luck: “Imagine playing a gig at the Radisson and the next minute you’re opening for Take That.”

It comes shortly after the band were forced to reschedule concert dates at the Co-op Live Arena after it was beset by a plethora of problems.

Musician plucked from obscurity to replace Olly Murs at Take That gig

A n aspiring musician playing in a hotel bar has been cast into the limelight after he was asked to stand in for Olly Murs and perform in front of a 14,000-strong crowd opening for Take That.

Singer and guitarist Daniel Rooney found himself supporting the boy band, with frontman Gary Barlow  later saying the lad had 'saved the day'.

The unknown Scottish singer landed the gig after Olly Murs, 39, who had been due to open for Take That at the Hydro in Glasgow , was forced to cancel.

Mr Rooney was playing in a bar in the city when he was spotted by celebrity correspondent and TV presenter Ross King .

Such was the impression Mr Rooney, from Cambuslang, made on King that he recommended Take That enlist him as a last-minute replacement, giving the young singer 30 mins to head over to the Hydro.

And the gamble appeared to pay off with the crowd at the sell-out gig giving the newcomer a raucous welcome.

The crowd sang along as he played covers of favourites including 70s hit Stuck in the Middle With You by Stealers Wheel and 2009 track Candy by Paolo Nutini.

Gary Barlow thanked the artist, whose career is sure to blow up overnight on Instagram, saying: 'This young man saved the day thank you @danielrooney_music.'

Danny had to stand in after Murs spent eight and a half hours at Heathrow Airport before his BA flight was axed. The 39-year-old said he had never missed a gig in his life, especially one supporting a global supergroup.

New fans of Daniel's also took to social media to heap praise on the newcomer, saying he 'saved the day' for everyone attending the concert.

One said: 'Huge congrats to Daniel Rooney of Cambuslang. Filling in on 30mins notice for Olly Murs who was stuck in London. What a fab intro to the big stage.'

Another fan wrote: 'Daniel Rooney from Cambuslang smashed it in your absence! Loved his performance'.

Meanwhile one fan told Daily Record: 'Daniel was great, I preferred him to Olly - I hope he makes it big.'

'Daniel Rooney smashed it,' Lorraine Cant wrote on X/Twitter. 'He's no Olly Murs, but gave an incredible performance with 30 minutes notice!'

A gobsmacked Daniel said after his Hydro performance: 'It's hard to take it in, it's really surreal'.

'I'm just having a chance now to look at my phone and talk to my Mrs and parents and stuff. It was fast - 20 minutes before going on I met Gary and the guys and we talked about what songs to do'.

'It was great, I got some good singalongs with the crowd etc and it felt like they were really behind me.'

He continued: 'I know some people were not happy about Olly but as soon as I went up and had a chat they were brilliant.

'Ross [King] went up first and announced what was going on, he explained I was playing in Radisson RED when Gary asked him to help so he came up to me and asked me to play the Hydro instead.

'I still had 45 minutes to go at the hotel but what can you do with something like this – but they're really happy for me.'

Danny then headed back to the hotel to join bandmate John McLaughlin of Johnny Mac and the The Faithful, who rushed down to take over his original gig.

And Danny has high hopes the opportunity will help give him a platform to showcase his own songs as an artist in his own right.

'It's early days – it was an amazing night but I hope it will help me show people what I can do and what I am about, with my own music.

'For now I'm going to head back to the hotel, see Johnny and try to get my head round it all.'

Ross was at Radisson RED Glasgow with friends for the second Friday in a row and was blown away by Danny, who was playing his regular pre and post Hydro show in the hotel's downstairs bar.

Ross said: 'I'd gone to the Radisson with my family and girlfriend for a pre-show meal.

'Gary and I were texting and I'd heard Olly was stuck in London, I joked I would be there for him but he said 'I'm not joking, we need you'.

'I told him I had just been listening to Danny and he was brilliant - Gaz said get over now you're both on in 30 minutes!

'Danny was sensational.. a star was born! He met the boys before he went on and they waited for him to come off and told him he was brilliant.'

Radisson RED manager Graham Chalmers said: 'Danny plays regularly for us – working with grassroots artists is huge for us and he is someone we thought really has something.

'It's important to us to showcase Scotland's talent – in fact we are opening a new live music venue with that ethos at the heart of it, the Rotunda and Roundhouse across from the hotel.

He went on to say: 'So, It was a strange moment when I looked over and saw Danny put his coat on and lift his guitar – I asked him what was going on but when he told me, how could you stand in the way of that sort of opportunity?

'We're really pleased for him and thanks to Ross for coming in again and of course for spotting the kind of talent we have at Radisson RED!'

Danny has a small following on Instagram, around 1,000 followers before tonight, and posts videos of him singing in his bedroom, including a haunting cover of The Beatles' Now and Then which came out in November last year.

He has played alongside bands including The Fratellis, writers of noughties indie anthem Chelsea Dagger.

While the main act including Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen arrived in Scotland on their private jet, Murs had an increasingly frustrating day at the airport going nowhere soon.

He kept a video diary on Instagram on his progress starting the day upbeat saying he was excited to be coming to Scotland.

But at 5.15pm the clearly frustrated singer and TV presenter, said: 'Honestly, you could not write this day. We now have got one of the ladies, one of the cabin crew, fallen over herself - I hope she's ok - but basically it's further delayed our flight. I don't think we are going to make it but I'll keep you posted.'

However the flight was eventually cancelled with Murs adding: 'Lot of angry people at the gate, the flight's just been cancelled.

'I'm extremely gutted. I don't think I've ever missed a gig especially of this magnitude.'

After an afternoon of mishaps with the flight, he was on his way to Glasgow in a car to make the rest of the weekend's shows.

He tweeted: 'So sorry to everyone at the @takethat show tonight in Glasgow, unfortunately I won't be there, I've been at London Heathrow from 11am this morning for my flight but after several delays and then a cabin crew incident our @British_Airways flight got cancelled. Don't think I've ever missed a gig before, am so annoyed.

'But am now in a car heading up for our 6hr journey for the Saturday and Sunday show right now.'

The venue also confirmed Murs's gig had been cancelled.

It said on social media: 'We are sorry to advise, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond anyone's control, Olly Murs cannot perform tonight (Friday) in Glasgow. We're very sorry for the inconvenience.'

Amelia and Olly with newborn baby/ Amelia and Olly on holiday

Olly Murs has become a dad with his wife Amelia giving birth to their first baby, sweetly referring to the bundle of joy as their ‘mini Murs’.

The couple shared a picture of them walking out of the hospital together, hand in hand as Olly carried the baby basket.

Announcing the birth on Instagram, the Troublemaker hitmaker revealed that their newborn baby girl is named Madison but didn’t give any further details.

‘Our mini murs has arrived. Madison we love you so much already x,’ Olly wrote.

The couple tied the knot in July 2023 and Olly shared news of their pregnancy on Instagram to his 4.7million followers in December of last year.

‘Baby Murs due 2024,’ the couple captioned their announcement, which showed the former X Factor star pointing at his wife’s swelling belly with obvious enthusiasm.

Olly, 39, shared updates on the couple’s preparation for the baby throughout the pregnancy, including an adorable video on the singer’s Instagram Story of the baby’s wardrobe, which was bursting with fashionable options.

Amelia, 31, shared an emotional video that featured her husband finding out about the pregnancy as well as the couple telling their friends and family.

The pair shared pictures and video from their lavish wedding ceremony in Essex last July. Tears streamed down the hitmaker’s face as he saw his bride for the first time, endearing him further to his already devoted fans.

The video, which he captioned: ‘Think this video says it all,’ also saw the newlyweds sharing a kiss, dancing at their crowded afterparty, and driving away in a beautiful vintage car.

Olly continued in his Instagram caption: ‘Thanks to everyone involved in our special weekend, a moment we’ll never forget.’

The Dear Darling singer, who got his start as a contestant on The X Factor, is soon hitting the road as the supporting act for Take That. The tour will take him across the country – luckily six of the shows will be local at London’s O2 Arena, allowing Olly to spend time with his new baby.

Olly has also announced a string of summer shows including a set at Thetford Forest as part of Forest Live.

The popstar’s announcement came amid another significant change in the hitmaker’s life – he was recently axed by The Voice where he appeared as a coach since 2018.

Olly has won the show twice as a coach and admitted he was ‘gutted’ when he found out that the 2023 season would be his last.

He told The Sun : ‘I don’t want to sit here like other artists might, and shine and gloss this up and say, “It was my decision.” I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to bulls**t my fans or bulls**t people who watch the show, and say, ‘Oh, it was an amicable decision to leave — I’ve got lots of things on next year, I can’t do it any more.’

Sharing his sadness about the decision he concluded: ‘I feel so proud of this show. When I started I never imagined I would be here for 6 or 7 years. I’m sad to be leaving but so happy to have been a part of the show.’

Olly Murs and Amelia

Many fans of the Heart Skips a Beat singer took to Twitter in the wake of the news to share their sadness.

‘It just won’t be the same without you next time! BIG HUGE mistake by them’, one person said.

‘So good to have you back ❤️ gutted it’s your last series’, another penned.

‘We’re gonna miss you on here but they’re going to REGRET IT ❤️’, added another sad fan.

Others declared Olly’s departure as ITV’s ‘biggest loss’ and said they will be ‘boycotting next year’.

Major losses pile pressure on the prime minister

Olly murs takes swipe at british airways after missing glasgow gig.

Olly Murs has taken to Instagram to rant about his disastrous experience flying to Glasgow after he was forced to miss his gig at the last minute. The chart-topping artist was set to take the stage at Glasgow's Hydro stadium last night (Friday, May 3) as a support act for Take That, but had to pull out just hours before.

Documenting his whole experience on his Instagram stories, the singer poked fun at British Airways for delaying and then cancelling the flight. Timestamping the whole ordeal, Olly made it onto a plane to be left sitting on the tarmac before all the passengers were told to disembark.

After a number of issues, including a flight attendant injuring themselves, the flight was eventually cancelled. An exhausted Olly was determined to find a way to Glasgow for his other shows, but unfortunately had to pull out of last night's performance.

After hours of waiting in anticipation to see if he would make it, Olly eventually posted the bad news on social media. He said: "So sorry to everyone at the @takethat show tonight in Glasgow, unfortunately I won’t be there, I have been at London Heathrow from 11am this morning for my flight but after several delays (check my Instagram) and then a cabin crew incident our @British_Airways flight got cancelled!

He added: "Don’t think I’ve ever missed a gig before, am so annoyed! But am now in a car heading up for our 6hr journey for the Saturday and Sunday show right now".

The venue announced the unfortunate news on its social media platforms, sharing: "We are sorry to advise, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond anyone's control, Olly Murs cannot perform tonight (Friday) in Glasgow. We're very sorry for the inconvenience."

Fans were left heartbroken that the singer had to pull out. While some were left slightly annoyed that Olly didn't make it, most were supportive and offered words of encouragement to the singer.

One person said: "These things are beyond your control. Absolutely no blame of yours! People slating need to remember - he performed 2 days after the birth of his first daughter! Disappointing yes but cmon now cut the guy some slack. See you Sunday!"

Another fan added: "It’s not your fault Olly, I know you will feel bad. If it’s technical issues on the aircraft, it’s better to be safe than sorry. As for the Crew member, bless them, hope they will be ok. They obviously feel bad too."

A third also said: "The wee guy who stepped in was cracking, gutted you weren’t there but what an opportunity for that guy - hope he has a big future ahead".

The former X Factor contestant has recently been celebrating the birth of his baby girl Madison with his wife, Amelia Tank from Plymouth. While settling into life as a new dad, Olly is currently touring with Take That, who are embarking on their global 'This Life' tour, which includes dates across the UK and Ireland.
