Busch Gardens - Kumba

Named for the lion’s roar, Kumba still reigns as king of the jungle on many lists of the world’s best coasters. -Chris Joy

Rides and Attractions

Whether you’re yearning for thrills on legendary coasters that will make you scream like a little girl, or prefer family-friendly rides that will leave your littlest adventurers smiling, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is bound to please. Check out this list of rides, complete with ride thrill ratings.

Serengeti Flyer

The world’s tallest and fastest ride of its kind, the Serengeti Flyer employs twin dueling arms that climb higher and faster with each swing, delivering numerous negative-G thrills as it oscillates. It ultimately reaches blistering speeds of 68 mph and a beg-for-mercy altitude of 135 feet, providing expansive views Busch Gardens Tampa Bay’s 65-acre Serengeti Plain-- if you’re brave enough to open your eyes, that is. Ride Thrill: Extreme

Just the bare facts about Iron Gwazi are enough to make your palms sweat. This wood and steel hybrid coaster promises 12 airtime moments; three inversions; a 206 foot-tall peak that tumbles into a 91-degree drop; and a max speed of 76 miles per hour, making it North America's tallest and the world's fastest and steepest hybrid coaster. Experts agree: Amusement Today ’s Golden Ticket Awards 2022 proclaimed Iron Gwazi as the best new roller coaster. Ride Thrill: Extreme

Like its namesake, the tiger, Tigris is an agile, powerful beast—and you’re invited to climb aboard. This gasp-worthy expedition covers over 1,800 feet of steel track with looping twists; an inverted heartline roll; forward and backward motion; a 150-foot surge towards the heavens; and drops that will almost certainly leave your stomach behind. Ride Thrill: High

Cheetah Hunt

A coaster-connoisseur favorite, Cheetah Hunt celebrates the fastest land animal with this steel, triple-launch roller coaster that curves high above the park before plummeting through a rocky gorge. Cheetah Hunt sprints over 4,400 feet, making it the park’s longest thrill ride. Ride Thrill: High

Cobra’s Curse

Busch Gardens dares you to come face-to-fang with this spinning, family roller coaster, where every ride is different. On this unique, steel coaster, you’ll rise 70 feet only to wind up inches away from a menacing snake with four-foot-fangs. You’ll escape by speeding down a serpentine track, backwards, forwards and then spinning freely. Each train spins at random determined by the riders’ weight distribution. Ride Thrill: Moderate

SheiKra uses a simple but astoundingly effective method to instill terror into passengers. It climbs 200 feet in the air, creeps over the edge of 90 degree drop, and then… stops. This gives you a good look at the plunge you’re about to take and time to think about life decisions. You’ll dive straight down at a searing 70 mph; tackle an Immelmann loop; experience a second dive into an underground tunnel; and finish the expedition with a splashdown that soaks SheiKra fans waiting to join in the fun. Ride Thrill: Extreme

With seven blow-your-mind inversions, Montu is a coaster legend, with rave reviews noting, ‘the forces you feel at the back end of the ride when you hit that batwing are insane.’ Be prepared for climbs; a twisting drop; a 60-foot vertical loop; an Immelmann loop; a weightless roll and a batwing inversion. If you want to ramp up the white-knuckle-factor, sit in the back, where the ‘inversions get really whippy.’ Ride Thrill: Extreme

Congo River Rapids

Cooling off has never been more fun than on this whitewater rafting trip, a family-friendly expedition with exhilarating dips, a mysterious water cave, and waterfalls that guarantee to get you soaked. Bystanders beside the Congo River Rapids’ banks get in on the action by firing water spray jets at unsuspecting adventurers on the ride. Ride Thrill: Moderate

Sited in the Sesame Street® Safari of Fun play area, this junior coaster welcomes kids with a mild ride piloted by Grover from Sesame Street. If your little ones are leery of their first roller coaster, you can accompany them on the trip. Ride Thrill: Kid Friendly

Serengeti Express Train

Journey through Busch Garden's Serengeti Plain on a relaxing train ride to discover a natural wonderland populated with large, free-roaming herds of African animals, including giraffe, zebra, antelope, and ostrich. The train stops in Nairobi and Stanleyville. Ride Thrill: Kid Friendly

Named for the lion’s roar, this infamous, high-speed roller coaster still reigns as king of the jungle on many lists of the world’s best coasters. Reasons include this monster’s seven inversions, an initial 135 foot drop, and one of the planet’s largest diving loops. Be prepared for a full three seconds of utter weightlessness while spiraling 360 degrees. Ride Thrill: Extreme

Grand Caravan Carousel

Pick a ride atop a glorious steed or enchanting creature on this classic family attraction, complete with bewitching lights and mirrors. Riders under 42” must be accompanied by a responsible person 14 years of age or older and are allowed only on the middle rows. Infants must be accompanied by a responsible person 14 years of age or older and must ride on a bench seat. Ride Thrill: Kid Friendly

The Scorpion

Don’t worry, this coaster won’t sting… much. One of only three roller coasters of its kind left in the world, Scorpion challenges daredevils with a 360 degree loop and speeds of 50 miles per hour. Ride Thrill: Moderate

Ubanga-Banga Bumper Cars

Step on the throttle and anticipate a full tank of fun on this timeless family classic, sited in the Congo Play Area. Ride Thrill: Kid Friendly

Gwazi Gliders

Mild, not wild, aerial thrills are the name of the game on this colorful adventure. Guests must be 56" or less to ride. Handheld infants aren’t allowed . Ride Thrill: Kid Friendly

Stanley Falls Flume

Go with the flow and cool down aboard this family-friendly log flume ride. You’ll weave through a lush jungle before the thrilling finale: a nosedive to a 40-foot splashdown. Ride Thrill: Moderate

Falcon’s Fury

Inspired by skydiving, Falcon’s Fury is a 335-foot, freestanding drop tower. Rising to the peak of the ride takes about a minute, which allows you a lot of time to soak up the soaring views as well as for the fear-factor to build. At the tippy-top of the climb, your seat rotates 90 degrees, so you’re facing straight down. It’s at this moment that you realize your previous terror was just a warmup. Hang on-- you’re about to tumble 300 feet at 60 mph, with your nose leading the way. Ride Thrill: Extreme

Sesame Street Safari of Fun

Kid-friendly rides, a climbing area and laughter are abundant at Sesame Street Safari of Fun . Your wee ones can make a splash with Zoe-Patra and the Hippos of Nile, a calm water ride with one small hill; sway through the jungle on Rosita's Djembe Fly-Away, a petite carousel swing; and climb in Elmo’s Tree House. Always high on the favorites list, Bert & Ernie's Watering Hole is a water play area brimming with bubblers, geysers, jets, and dumping buckets. Cookie Monster Cloud Bounce will burn off some steam, begging kids to hop, jump, and play; while The Count's Zambezi Rally urges children pilot a race car. And that’s just for starters: a wealth of other experiences and adventures await. Ride Thrill: Kid Friendly

If you think that’s ginormous, take a gander at the Southern white rhinos, also roaming the plain. Native to eastern and southern Africa, these colossal mammals can measure more than six-feet-tall at the shoulder and weigh as much as 5,000 pounds.

Tigers Your kitty may not like baths, but tigers are an altogether different affair. These striped beauties enthusiastically splash into water to cool off or to chase prey, and they’re formidable swimmers that can cross lakes and rivers. At Jungala, you can check out the Bengal tigers-- immense cats by any measure, with males weighing nearly 500 pounds—and maybe even see them take a dip.

Elephants Explore Busch Garden’s Nairobi to snag a close-up look at the world’s largest land mammals, Asian elephants. If you want to get even closer to this endangered species, opt for one of the daily connections at the Elephant Interaction Wall.

Hyenas You’re invited to take an expedition to the Edge of Africa® to witness the park’s clan of spotted hyenas, which are neither canine nor feline but part of the Hyaenidae family. Often thought of as scavengers, in reality, hyenas are skilled, aggressive predators. As their population in the wild is diminishing, Busch Gardens® Tampa Bay is has welcomed two baby hyenas into the cackle as part of the Species Survival Program.

Zebras It’s true: no two zebra's stripes are alike. Check it out for yourself when you embark on the Serengeti Express Train, Serengeti Safari® Tour or at Edge of Africa®, where you can see two species of zebra: Grant's zebras, which have fat stripes that extend around their bellies, and Grevy’s zebras, with narrow stripes and white bellies. Members of the horse family, zebras have complex communication skills and can sleep standing up.

Giraffes As nature’s tallest creatures, giraffes are surprisingly nimble. They can sprint up to 35 mph and have been known to jump up to six feet in the air. And they’re fascinating: Giraffes’ necks are too short to reach the ground; they spend most of their lives standing up; and they only need five to 30 minutes of sleep each day. You can come face-to-muzzle with these spotted wonders on the Serengeti Plain, which you can access on the Serengeti Safari ® tour, the Serengeti Express train, or from multiple viewing points on the Edge of Africa ® path.

And there’s more! Check out all of Busch Gardens’ amazing animals , including a slithery world of snakes, alligators and crocodiles ; warm-weather-loving African penguins ; and primates like gorillas, chimps and lemurs.

First look: New rollercoaster Phoenix Rising is coming to Busch Gardens

  • Sharon Kennedy Wynne Times staff

Busch Gardens offered more details and a hardhat tour Wednesday of Phoenix Rising, a new inverted coaster opening in the Tampa theme park later this spring.

Phoenix Rising will be a family-friendly coaster, though it will reach speeds of 44 miles per hour. Riders must be 42 inches tall, the height of the average 5-year-old.

Are you ready to rise? 🐦‍🔥 Feel the rush of a legendary flight as you soar above the Serengeti Plain, and drop into fun-filled twists and turns that reach speeds up to 44 miles per hour on the new Phoenix Rising! Coming soon! pic.twitter.com/8AyAG8bs7O — Busch Gardens Tampa Bay (@BuschGardens) April 24, 2024

Located in the park’s Pantopia section, it is Busch Gardens’ 10th roller coaster. It will be its first to have a musical soundtrack as riders fly over the park, suspended from the track like a bird in flight. In addition to showing the work in progress, the park revealed a point-of-view video on its social media accounts of what the ride will be like. The coaster will travel across 1,831 feet of track.

“Riders will feel the rush of the wind and thrill of the flight in this suspended roller coaster that enable ride cars and riders to swing side to side as the train races along the track high above the Serengeti Plain,” a park announcement said.

It could open some time in the next two months, according to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Adventure Island president Stewart Clark. Park passholders will be given a chance to take preview rides before it officially opens. Tickets are available on the Busch Gardens website at buschgardens.com .

Your Busch Gardens trip begins far before you enter the park. These Busch Gardens Tampa tips will help you organize and prepare for a great day of fun.

As with most theme parks, Busch Gardens Tampa FL does not allow bags on most rides. While this policy is in place for the safety of guests and crew members, going back and forth between the rides and a locker is a nuisance.

Instead, try to pack as lightly as possible. If you can fit everything in your pockets or a small bag, great! If not, be prepared to rent a locker.

Locker sizes and rates are as follows:

  • Standard ( 7.5″ h x 13″ w x 18″ d ): $15 per day
  • Large ( 10.5″ h x 16.5″ w x 18″ d ):  $20 per day
  • Jumbo ( 13.5″ h x 22.5″ w x 18″ d ): $25 per day

Additionally, certain rides offer one-time use, keypad-operated lockers for $3.00 for the first two hours and $1.00 for each additional hour, with a $20.00 per day maximum.

Arrive Early

Between the animal encounters, the exhilarating roller coasters, and the jaw-dropping shows, it’s easy to spend an entire day at the park. And, you should! Arrive as early as possible to enjoy a full day.

Park hours vary per season and day of the week, so be sure to check the theme park hours of operation before you travel.

Dress Appropriately

One of the most important Busch Gardens Tampa tips is also the most logical one: wear sunscreen! And if you’re wondering what to wear to Busch Gardens, don’t forget to wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your face and eyes from the sun. Remember these when you’re planning what to bring to Busch Gardens.

Do you find yourself asking, “What can I bring into Busch Gardens Tampa?” Guests are also allowed to bring clear water bottles into the park. Do so and stay hydrated all day long! The last thing you want is fatigue and sunburn at the same time.

Park Near the Tram

To enter the theme park, guests must park their vehicles and hop on a tram ride. This tram takes you straight to the ticket gate. For your convenience, try parking as close to the tram as possible. If you arrive early enough, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Decide the Theme of Your Day

Did you come to Busch Gardens Tampa to see the animals, ride the coasters, or experience it all? The best things to do at Busch Gardens Tampa depends on the things you’re most interested in doing! Deciding a “theme” for the day will influence the flow of your day and help prioritize which attractions you visit throughout your trip.

Ideally, do your best to incorporate both aspects of the park into your day for a truly memorable experience.

Want more tips for Busch Gardens Tampa? Although some visitors find it bothersome to carry around a Busch Gardens Tampa map, it’s a helpful tool! Having a park map ensures you get to your destination with ease. Plus, use the map to formulate a plan of action once you’ve chosen your path for the day!

Consider Purchasing an All Day Dining Pass

So, what to know before going to Busch Gardens? Since outside food and beverages ( with the exception of water bottles ) are not permitted in the park, you’ll need a plan for meals.

Additionally, if you intend to stay at Busch Gardens all day, your food tab will add up fast. If you’re planning to spend a whole day at the park or are visiting with multiple people, the All Day Dining Plan is worth it.

Animal Experiences

Did you know Busch Gardens is home to more than 12,000 animals from 300 different species? If seeing the animals is your top priority, you’ll want to follow these Busch Gardens Tampa tips.

Visit the Animals First

If you’re not a roller coaster tycoon and cannot wait to see the animals, head to these areas of the park first. Certain species of animals tend to be more active in the morning when the temperatures are still relatively cool. At Busch Gardens, you can see and learn more about a multitude of animals including:

If you’re fascinated by animals, sign up for a tour prior to your visit. Some tours allow visitors to get up close to the animals, too.

For true animal lovers wishing to expand their zoological encounters, we have the best wildlife excursions to keep you busy. From dolphin greetings at All Day Dining Plan  to giant tortoise feedings at the ZooTampa at Lowry Park , to a wetlands habitat in Florida’s Largest Aquarium -the activities are endless.

Check Out the Busch Gardens Animal Care Center

While this tour requires an extra reservation and fee, it is well worth the cost. The Busch Gardens Animal Care Center takes great pride in the exceptional animal health and rehabilitation work it provides for animals throughout the park. From a simple check-up to helping injured wild animals get back on their feet, this care center does it all.

Throughout your tour, you’ll witness firsthand the high level of care these animals receive daily and how passionate the crew is about taking care of the animals at Busch Gardens.

If you sign up for this tour, check-in at the Serengeti Outpost in Nairobi no later than 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time.

Don’t Miss the Keeper Talks

Throughout the day, Busch Gardens animal keepers introduce a few select animals to visitors for educational keeper talks. During this time, the keepers will tell you all about the animal, its habitat, food, and more.

Ride the Serengeti Railway

If you don’t have much time left, but still want a glimpse at the animals, catch a ride on the Serengeti Railway. This calming railroad ride takes visitors around the Serengeti Plain and offers views of giraffes, zebras, lions, and more.

If you’re more focused on riding the roller coasters during the day, the Serengeti Railway is the best way to include animals in your visit.

Thrill Rides

In addition to hands-on animal encounters, Busch Gardens is a roller coaster fanatic’s dream come true. With 15 exhilarating coasters and thrill rides, get ready to scream at the top of your lungs! If you’re planning to spend your day experiencing the attractions, these Busch Gardens Tampa tips are for you.

If animal thrill rides are what you’re after, then add Everest to your Florida itinerary, especially the intense backward rollercoaster at Disney’s Animal Kingdom . Don’t forget to include Adventure Island for thrilling water adventures as well.

View looking up the Kumba roller coaster at Busch Gardens Tampa, Florida, USA

Start Your Day at the Big Rides

To maximize your time at the park, head to the biggest and baddest thrill rides first. The rides are scattered all over the park, so the old “ head to the back of the park first ” tip will only work for certain rides such as Kumba.

Instead, once you’ve entered the park, walk in a counterclockwise path. In doing so, you’ll run right into Cheetah Hunt, a triple launch coaster boasting 4,400 feet of steel track. As you continue along the path, you’ll find all of Busch Gardens’ top coasters and thrill rides.

Related Post: Ultimate Guide to Busch Gardens Tampa: Coupons, Discounts, and Deals

In addition, select a few “must-do” Busch Gardens Tampa Bay rides before entering the park. If you’ve arrived as early as possible, you can head straight to those rides without a significant wait time. Or, if you plan your day just right, time the big rides around meal times. Typically, lunch and dinner time is when most park goers exit the queue lines in search of some grub.

Let the Kids Play

If you’re visiting with kids, you know they’ll become antsy at some point in the day. It’s inevitable . When the kids are ready to play, head over to the Sesame Street® Safari of Fun. With kid-friendly rides, splash and play areas, and shows just for them, it’s the perfect way for the little ones to enjoy the day. Plus, let your child experience their first thrill ride with Air Grover!

Leverage the Child Swap Opportunities

If you’re visiting Busch Gardens with young kids who cannot go on the massive roller coasters, you don’t need to miss out on the fun. Just use the Child Swap card!

At the ride entrance, ask an attendant for a Child Swap card. This card will have a specific ride time on it. Return to the ride at that time and the first portion of your party will enter the quick queue line.

During this time, the rest of your group will wait with the kids who cannot ride. Once the first party finishes the ride, pass the card to the rest of the riders for their turn.

Maximize Your Ride Time

Many theme park goers are under the impression that you must exit a park before the closing time. Not true! Visitors are allowed to enter ride queues until the park closes, meaning if you’re in line when closing time arrives, you can still ride that coaster. Get one last zoom on Sheikra or Montu in to cap off your day.

With these Busch Gardens Tampa tips in mind, you’ll get to experience some of the world’s best roller coasters and attractions!

Go to the Shows

From performances just for kids to epic productions, Busch Gardens Tampa offers exceptional entertainment for all. Although the shows pack a punch, it’s not the only reason why they made our list of Busch Gardens Tampa tips.

Many of these shows are indoors, allowing you to escape from the hot Florida sun! When the sun becomes unbearable, head inside to see a show like “Turn It Up!”

Find Out What Festivals are Happening

To add even more entertainment to their already impressive lineup of fun, Busch Gardens presents themed festivals throughout the year.

Before you make your trip to Busch Gardens, find out what festival is going on and take advantage of the seasonal fun and events. We personally love the wine festival!

Know if You Need an Extra Ticket

While many events like Busch Gardens Christmas Town Tampa are included in your admission, some of the additional experiences and events at Busch Gardens require an extra ticket. For instance, the park’s annual Halloween festival, Howl-O-Scream, demands an additional admissions ticket to enter.

Certain tours, animal experiences, and concerts available throughout the park also require extra tickets on top of your park admission if you aren’t a pass member.

Purchase a PhotoKey

If you want to capture your Busch Gardens Tampa memories forever and smartphone pictures aren’t cutting it, purchase a PhotoKey . Busch Gardens Tampa Bay theme park is offering behind-the-scenes tours of four roller coasters for a four-day period beginning Saturday. The experiences are tied to the upcoming National Roller Coaster Day, which is set for Aug. 16.

Park visitors will be able to see areas not typically seen by the public, including maintenance areas, and they will be involved in Q&As with coaster workers.

Participants must sign up for the tours at Serengeti Outpost. Tickets for the tours, which are free of charge, will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Tours are held at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday. The available rides are SheiKra, Cheetah Hunt, Cobra’s Curse and Iron Gwazi, the dramatic ride the park bills as North America’s tallest (206-foot peak) hybrid coaster and the world’s fastest (76 mph) and steepest (91-degree angle drop) hybrid coaster. It debuted in March.

Ranked: The Roller Coasters of Busch Gardens Tampa – Including Iron Gwazi

Welcome back to another “Ranked” article here on Laughing Place. This time we’re taking a road trip to Tampa, FL for a look specifically at the coasters of Busch Gardens. The park currently offers 10 roller coasters, however I have not been on Air Grover, the children’s coaster. Suffice to say, it’s pretty likely it would be in tenth place for me anyway.

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

The other coaster in the park is the sort of infamous Iron Gwazi. Originally supposed to open in 2020, this re-tracked and upgraded version of the park’s original Gwazi wooden coaster ended up being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When Busch Gardens reopened in summer 2020, Iron Gwazi wasn’t open, and it didn’t open in 2021 either. The park recently announced that the impressive new hybrid coaster will open in March 2022.

UPDATED 5/30/2022:  I have now had the chance to ride Iron Gwazi, and I have placed it into my ranking. Read on to see where it fits into the line-up.

On that note, let’s dive into the countdown!

9. Sand Serpent

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

Photo from BGTSafari.com

Last place on my list is Sand Serpent, a simple wild mouse coaster that actually came to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay from its sister park in Williamsburg. While a fun ride (identical to Goofy’s Sky School  at Disney California Adventure ), it’s definitely the most cookie cutter of the bunch.

8 . Scorpion

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

Scorpion is the park’s oldest roller coaster, opening way back in 1980, but honestly, this thing really holds up. Thanks to the lap bar restraints and smooth track profiling for the time, Scorpion still rides pretty well, offering up a somewhat intense loop. A classic that I’m happy to see stick around for as long as possible.

7. Cobra’s Curse

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

If this was a countdown of the most unique coasters, then I think Cobra’s Curse would have to top it off. The experience starts out with a pretty impressive queue by Busch Gardens’ standards, that is very reminiscent of Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride at the Universal parks. The ride itself begins with a vertical lift hill that brings you face to face with the giant Cobra statue. You then begin a three part ride, the first part being forwards, the second backwards, and the third spinning. All of that put together makes for a unique, fun and well themed roller coaster.

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

Opening in 2019, the second newest attraction at Busch Gardens Tampa is Tigris, a really fun and surprisingly forceful launched coaster. Tigris is a shuttle coaster, one that goes backwards and forwards on the same track, allowing it to fit in a smaller footprint than a lot of other coasters. Three launches get you up to speed, two forwards and one backwards, and they provide a pretty forceful start to the ride. Once you get to the tippy top of the coaster, the hang-time and air-time are pretty spectacular. A fun addition to the park’s line-up.

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

SheiKra is definitely a one trick pony, but the trick that it offers is an incredible one. Taking riders 200 feet in the air before stalling them looking down towards the ground, where you’re about to go over a 90 degree drop is honestly terrifying every single time. The first time I rode this, I was so scared, as I’m sure most people who ride are. The adrenaline does kick in though, and you get ejected down that first drop, before swooping up through an inversion to do it all over again, this time with a smaller drop. The kinetic energy of the splashdown drop at the end of the ride is not only fun while riding, but also for passers by.

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

Probably the first large scale looping coaster in the state of Florida was the almost 30 year old Kumba. An absolute old-school Bolliger and Mabillard (B&M) coaster that still packs an impressive punch to this day. I would say that Kumba is probably the most intense coaster in the park, as the force of the inversions and helixes is felt in your feet every time. It’s a really picturesque coaster too, as you can see in the photo above. Kumba is the African word for roar, and that is definitely on display here, as you can hear the loud and impressive roar of the coaster even from far away.

3. Iron Gwazi

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

The placement of Iron Gwazi on this list comes as a surprise to even me. Let me preface by saying that my one and only ride followed a 90 minute wait that was advertised as 15 minutes, and there was a downtime, so to say I was really antsy to get on the ride would be an understatement. I finally got put on the ride and was grouped into the front row, which provides some absolutely incredible views of the park. The thing about this type of coaster though, is that it really gives a more chaotic ride towards the back of the train. So my front row ride wasn’t quite as epic as I had hoped. Hopefully soon I will get the chance to ride it again in the back, and then I’m sure it will make it a little higher on this list.

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

My favorite of Busch Gardens’ three B&M coasters is Montu, their inverted model. Out of the quite a few installations of this type of ride that I’ve been on, I’d have to say Montu is my favorite. With a lot of the drops and inversions built into Egyptian themed trenches, it provides for a really good, low to the ground thrill. On that note, a lot of the inversions are really whippy, especially if you’re in the back. So you really get pulled into them. Montu is another older coaster (over 25 years old) that still holds up exceptionally well.

1. Cheetah Hunt

busch gardens tampa coaster tour

Cheetah Hunt is just pure fun and adrenaline, and while not the most intense ride in the park, it’s the one that never fails to put a smile on my face. The ride features three different launches and a meandering layout that goes over the park’s Skyway, zig-zagging through waterfalls and alongside the Serengeti Plains. It’s a long ride that is immensely satisfying. There’s also something about the sound of the launches, which almost sounds like a Cheetah’s roar. Cheetah Hunt is the most fun and my personal favorite coaster at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

Rise Up! Phoenix Rising is Set to Soar into Busch Gardens This Summer

Busch Gardens is putting the finishing touches on its next coaster, which is set to debut this June! Phoenix Rising is an all-new family-friendly coaster unlike anything the park has done before. This “in-between” coaster gives guests the same thrills as the other coasters in the park but without the intensity of some of its larger rides. Unlike some of the bigger coasters at the park, this one will not feature any direct inversions – just twists, turns, AND onboard audio!

The ride is still being built, but we were able to get a sneak peek at its progress and learn all about the exciting developments the team at Busch Gardens has been working on to make this incredible ride come to life!

The inspiration for Phoenix Rising

The inspiration for Phoenix Rising stems from the park’s previous swinging ship ride, The Phoenix. The ride will be located in the Pantopia area of the park, which is based on world travel. As phoenixes show up in different areas of mythology from around the world, it’s the perfect spot for the new coaster to call home.

The entrance of the ride will showcase artifacts and items that will give the illusion and hints of phoenixes that travelers have gathered over the years. Four large banners will introduce the four different types of phoenixes you’ll encounter on the ride which are inspired by different landscapes from different worlds:

  • Fire Phoenix – Desert realm
  • Ice Phoenix – Glaciers and mountaintops
  • Jungle Phoenix – Rainforest
  • Sea Phoenix- Ocean

What makes Phoenix Rising unique?

The ride will soar 44 miles per hour over Pantopia and the Serengeti Plain and will have several different elements that will make it stand out, from the family-friendly aspect to the innovative technology not yet seen in any other coaster at the park.

“The best part about the entire attraction is the height requirement. We talk all the time about creating a park that's great for the entire family, and we knew that in our portfolio of some of the best coasters in the entire world, we were still lacking that sort of entry-level, that first time to ride, that ‘big kid’ coaster. With Phoenix rising and that height being only 42 inches to ride, it's going to be an amazing family attraction and the best first ‘big kid’ coaster ride,” said Steward Clark, president of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

But the height isn’t the only thing that’s special to Phoenix Rising. Each time you ride, you’ll have a different experience. Through a randomized sequence, you’ll encounter one of the four phoenixes as you get on the ride. Four 8-foot by 8-foot windows will showcase your phoenix as you watch it materialize as you board.

The seats on the ride will be attached to the track from the top, allowing your feet to dangle and give you the feeling that you’re flying like a phoenix.

Rise Up! Phoenix Rising is Set to Soar into Busch Gardens This Summer

One of the most unique elements of Phoenix Rising is the use of onboard audio. Once you’re secured into your seat and as you take off, audio and sounds will bring your phoenix to life. You’ll hear the flapping of the phoenix wings, the call of the phoenix, and environmental effects like crashing waves and jungle noises.

Facts about Phoenix Rising:

  • Maximum height: 80 feet
  • Track length: 1,831 feet
  • Maximum speed: 44 mph
  • Number of trains: 1
  • Number of vehicles: 10 per train
  • Number of passengers: 2 per vehicle

How you can experience Phoenix Rising

Phoenix Rising is set to open this summer in late June. Annual pass holders will get early ride access prior to its public debut. Annual passes start as low as $15.75 a month.

  • Don’t try to see it all in one day. Especially with little ones, it’s the most fun to spend a few days exploring the park if time alls, rather than trying to cram it all into one day.
  • Download the Busch Gardens app for updated wait times and maps.
  • On a budget or have picky eaters? Bring a refillable water bottle and snacks. While there are plenty of food options available within the park, outside food and drinks are allowed and can help you save some money. You can also purchase a food plan before entering the park to get the best possible deals.
  • Don’t forget to check the forecast and dress for the weather. Busch Gardens is primarily outdoors, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket or umbrella. Also, carry essentials like hats and sunscreen.
