road trip from houston texas to destin florida

Planning a road trip to Destin?  Here’s my ultimate road trip offering 3 different routes from Texas, with plenty of stops along the way!

Sunny Summer day at the beach in Destin, Florida

Sci-Port Discovery Center is a fun science museum for kids, with very interactive, hands-on exhibits!

The Shreveport Aquarium it’s a fun place to stop and stretch your legs for a few hours!

The Louisiana Boardwalk is a fun stop, with shops and chain-type dining along the Red River.

The Blind Tiger restaurant in Downtown Shreveport, Louisiana

We love Frank’s Pizza Napoletana for a yummy stop on the way in or out of Texas!  It’s a couple of minutes off I-20, but worth it.

In Downtown Shreveport, T he Blind Tiger had been making terrific cajun and creole dishes since 1992! I love their fried shrimp and gumbo, or for non-seafood eaters, their pecan-crusted chicken is amazing!

Duck Commander Sign, West Monroe Louisiana

Monroe/W. Monroe, LA

The Northeast Louisiana Children’s Museum is another fun place to let the kids run around and burn off a little energy for an hour or 2, although they may want to stay longer!  Click HERE to visit their website.

Most people driving through consider the location of Duck Commander of Duck Dynasty to be a MUST STOP!  If you loved the show, they even have driving tours of the locations of the places they visited!  Click HERE to read more!

Flying Tiger Brewery is a good place to stop for a drink, with a big yard, tasting room and food trucks on weekends and during events. Click HERE for more information.

I’m all about my Hilton Honor Points, so I always check Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn.  Both have indoor pools, which make my kids happy.

Vicksburg Mississippi

Vicksburg, MS

This beautiful city is known for the Mississippi River that runs through it, and the Civil War Battle fought here.  If you love history, it’s an incredible place to stop!

Tour the historic homes, or take a ghost tour!

The Vicksburg National Military Park is a National Park, and your National Park Pass will get you in for FREE! The 14-mile driving tour takes you through the area where the Union forces clashed with the Confederate, and each state participating in the war has erected monuments to those who fought and died here. The Cairo Museum spotlights the Union Ironclad, Cairo, that was sunk by the Confederate Army during the war, and raised 100 years later from its silt bed on the bottom of the Yazoo River. While the driving tour is great, to really experience the park, try one of the walking tours!

Rusty’s Riverfront Grill Click HERE for more information.

We’ve stayed a couple of places I wouldn’t recommend, but the Hampton Inn was nice, clean and convenient to the Interstate without being on it, and right across from the National Military Park.  Click HERE to visit their website.

About 40 minutes South of Vicksburg, The Grand Gulf Military State Park offers camping with a museum, hiking trail and observation tour, all just 300 ft. from the Mississippi River. It’s a scenic drive from Vicksburg to the park.

Jackson, MS

The Mississippi Children’s Museum is another great stop for little children!  Click HERE to visit their website.

If you have the time, the Children’s Museum is located in the LaFleur Museum District, and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is incredible!  Click HERE to read more.

My favorite restaurant in Jackson recently closed, but the Pig and Pint is a fun, trendy restaurant with authentic Mississippi BBQ, which isn’t Texas BBQ.  Click HERE to visit their website.

To see a little more of the Jackson area, head a little North to Madison. The Mermaids Cafe on Lake Caroline was a treat with comfort food overlooking the lake.

We stayed a few time on different trips in the nearby Embassy Suites , which I’d highly recommend.

We’ve camped more than once on our way to Florida, and we were lucky enough once to get a site at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park.  There are only 28 sites, so make your reservations early!  Click HERE for more information.

All my other overnight stays in Jackson have been late night highway chain hotels where we carried in the kids still asleep, and back out the next morning.  I have always dreamt of an adult weekend in Jackson, and staying at the Old Capitol Inn!  Click HERE to see why!

Hattiesburg, MS

Grand Paradise Water Park lets the kids get out and cool off for a few hours of play in the water!  Click HERE for more information!

Head to Downtown Hattiesburg, and fun restaurants like the Thirsty Hippo, Bianchi’s Pizzaria, Coney Island Hot Dog Stand and Grateful Soul!

Stay There are several great hotels in the Historic Downtown District, including the Admiral Hotel. We stayed at the Hampton Inn. I really like my Hilton Honor Points.

Mobile, AL is home of the first Mardi Gras parade, and is still the place to visit! Last year we spent two weeks at this amazing VRBO on the Mardi Gras Route !

Dauphin Island Beach, Alabama

Dauphin Island, AL

We like to taka a little detour, and head off the Interstate to Dauphin Island.  It’s a fun place to just drive down and take the ferry back out, something we have done several times, just to let the kids get out and finally put our feet in the sand!

Again, we just love the Dauphin Island Beach!  It’s $5/car but worth it to just get out and play for a bit!  It’s also one of the few dog friendly beaches in the area!  Click HERE for more information.

The Estuarium is an aquarium highlighting the sea life in the Gulf and Mobile Bay, with a neat stingray touch tank.  Click HERE for more information.

Indian Shell Mound Historic Park is a free park that highlights the shell mounds built by ancient native Americans.  It’s just a nice place to stop and stretch your legs, and we love the big trees!  Click HERE to read more.

Fort Gaines sits on the East end of Dauphin Island, which offered a good line of protection of Mobile Bay, just across from the Estuarium. Since falling in love with the musical Hamilton, we loved that it was also the location of where Vice President Aaron Burr was caught and arrested for treason in 1806.

For the view and general fun, we like Islanders Restaurant and Bar.  Click HERE for more information.

We’ve never stayed in Dauphin Island, but there are beach houses, hotels and campgrounds.  Click HERE to read more.

Take the 40-minute Fort Morgan ferry across Mobile Bay to Gulf Shores.  Check their website for ticket prices and schedule!

road trip from houston texas to destin florida

Gulf Shores/Orange Beach

We’ve stayed in Gulf Shores as much as Destin, and both are great destinations.  Gulf Shores will save you a little money over Destin, which is pricier and more crowded, but you’ll find more to do in Destin.

Go parasailing, dolphin cruise, off-shore fishing and much more!

Gulf State State Park offers RV camping, cabins and even tent camping, plus lots of kids activities, hike and bike trails, zip lines and a fishing pier with bait and pole rentals. Click HERE to read more.

If you’re looking for a fun and loud place, with lots of kid’s activities, then you’ll want to head over to The Hangout !  They even have a fun Pirate and Princess themed breakfast!  Bob’s Beachside Café and T he Flying Harpoon are two must when visiting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach!

The Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton Inn are both on the beach, and the Holiday Inn is too, and has the best pool.  If you’re traveling with your dog, we love the conveniences at the Hotel Indigo – Orange Beach .

There is plenty to do in Pensacola, and great beaches, too!

The Blue Angels do two air shows a year, plus practice over Pensacola.  Check their schedule for their next practice or show!

The Pensacola Lighthouse and Museum is a fun stop! Click HERE to visit their website.

Uncle Sandy’s Macaw Bird Park lets you feed rescued macaws.  Click HERE to read more.

Joe Patti’s Seafood Shop is a great place to stop!  The seafood is brought in fresh, and the deli has terrific finds!  Click HERE to visit their website.

Again, you’ll find affordable stops at Hampton Inn and the HIlton Garden Inn on the beach, but the Hilton Resort has the best pool, and all 3 are on the beach!

Navarre Beach, Florida

Navarre Beach , Florida

On our most recent visit to the Florida Gulf Coast, we spend a couple days in Navarre and I just absolutely love this little town! Play in the bay or head across the bridge to play on the beach. There are numerous FREE beach access locations.

Dewey Destins was our go-to! Great food with a sandy beach on the bay.

Navarre Family Watersports , conveniently next door to Dewey Destins, offers a fun inflatable waterpark, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and even boats and jet skis!

Best Western Navarre is also located on the bay, with a great sandy beach and beautiful view!

Check out Snow’s Surf Shack on Air B-N-B for a great and affordable house for 6.

Scenic I-49

Natchitoches pronounced Nacodish, but I don’t know why.

This pretty historic town was the site of Steel Magnolias, and is a lovely stop on the way south from Shreveport.  It’s a beautiful town to visit, and a destination during Christmas, when the entire town is lit up!

The Natchitoches Meat Pies are a big deal, and they are amazing!  Click HERE to visit the Lasyone’s website.

A little further south in Marksville, LA visit the Paragon Casino Resort with a tropical themed pool, atrium with alligators and turtles and an alligator feeding show every Saturday.  and a casino.  Click HERE for more information.

Just North of Lake Charles, the Coushatta Casino Resort offers beautiful hotel and swimming pool, a perfect stop along the highway!  Click HERE for more information.

The Children’s Museum of Acadia is a great place to let the kids explore and stretch their legs!  Click HERE to visit their website.

Baton Rouge, LA

DSC_0898 (1).JPG

My favorite stop is New Orleans! Of course, I could and have written entire post on New Orleans, but here’s the highlights for a one or two night stay!

Take the Steamboat Natchez Tour!  Click HERE for more information.

Visit one of the plantations, like Oak Alley, south of New Orleans.  Click HERE to read more.

The Audubon Zoo or Aquarium of the Americas are also wonderful!

A beignet from Café du Monde is almost a mandatory part of any trip to the Big Easy, but go to the original.

For dinner, we really enjoy Huck Finn’s, a fun, casual restaurant in the French Quarter.  The Ruby Slipper in the quarter is great for breakfast and brunch!

If you have the time to enjoy it, the Lamothe Guest House in the French Quarter is wonderful!  Click HERE to visit their website.

We most recently stayed at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, a huge hotel on the Mississippi River across from Harrahs Casino on the edge of the French Quarter.  Great heated pools for visiting all year!  Click HERE to visit their website.

Every post needs a good story.  While chaperoning a Girl Scout trip, we stayed at the Brent House in New Orleans once when I needed something inexpensive and last minute, without realizing it is attached to the Oscher Medical Center Hospital.  We drove in to have dinner and a ghost tour in the French Quarter, and it was actually a clean and comfortable stay.  Click HERE to visit their website.

Gulfport and Biloxi, MS

Take Hwy 90 off I-10 for a scenic trip along the beach.

Stop and play on the beach! There are several places to stop along Hwy 90.

  • Pensacola Beach
  • St. George Island
  • Clearwater Beach
  • Sanibel Island
  • Finish: Key West

  • Total driving time:  38 h

Why take the Gulf Coast road trip?

It’s hard to imagine a better journey for the beach bum than this ultimate Gulf Coast road trip. As you drive from Texas to Florida, you find more pretty beach towns than you can count.

From the golden beaches of South Padre Island to the white South Florida beaches, it’s one of the most mouth-watering road trips in the US to take.

In particular, you find some of the whitest and most famous beaches in Florida. Pensacola Beach, Clearwater Beach and Sanibel Island are just a few of Florida’s many Gulf Coast beach gems.

But the ultimate Gulf Coast road trip is not solely about beaches. It’s also about the fun towns and cities that you find along the way.

New Orleans is one such unique Gulf Coast city as you drive from Texas to Florida. The Louisiana city, appropriately known as the Big Easy, offers both great sightseeing and eye-catching drinks.

Fewer miles: If you prefer a shorter Gulf Coast road trip, the Orlando to Florida Keys drive also follows that same lovely coastline but starts in the theme park capital.

1. South Padre Island, TX

On the southern tip of Texas, the ultimate Gulf Coast road trip adventure begins. South Padre Island is both an island and the southernmost town along the extensive Texas Gulf Coast.

You can, of course, begin this Gulf of Mexico road trip at any other destination along the way from Texas to Florida. However, if you want to see every mile of the Gulf Coast, you need to include South Padre Island on the itinerary.

Because South Padre Island is a very likable destination, that’s a decision easy to motivate.

When you visit Padre Island, you notice that the island is much more than the popular spring break party hub it has become known as. Texas’ southernmost Gulf Coast destination is a great place for anyone who likes beaches and the outdoors.

Above all, the main attraction on South Padre Island is its beach. With wide dunes and inviting blue Texas water, it’s easy to find peace on the island; as South Padre Island is so big, it’s always possible to get away from the crowds.

To further appreciate the stunning coastal South Texas environment, walk the popular South Padre Island boardwalks. Laguna Madre Nature Trail is perfect for a short stroll, while the adjacent South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center has a longer boardwalk offering a more complete experience.

Many birds migrating across the Mexican Gulf make their crucial first landfall on South Padre Island, creating a paradise for birdwatchers. But as you wander the South Padre Island boardwalks, you on top of a wide range of feathered wildlife also have the chance to spot alligators and tortoises — this is a beautiful introduction to the coastal South Texas area and a superb way to kick off the ultimate Gulf Coast road trip from Texas to Florida.

Route info: Padre Island is Texas’ longest barrier island, and it stretches out all the way from South Padre Island in the south to Corpus Christi in the north. But as there is no road taking you directly from its south to its north, you need to drive on the mainland to get to the next stop on the Gulf Coast road trip itinerary.

2. Corpus Christi, TX

  • Driving distance: 175 mi / 282 km
  • Driving time: 3 h

When you reach Corpus Christi, you reach a Gulf Coast city that offers some great Texas attractions. Next to each other in the North Beach area, you find the city’s historic military vessel and an appealing aquarium. It couldn’t be more convenient to tick them both off your Gulf Coast bucket list.

The USS Lexington Museum , on the bay of Corpus Christi, is nothing less than an iconic experience. Stepping aboard the long serving but nowadays retired aircraft carrier of USS Lexington, nicknamed the Blue Ghost, is thrilling and educational. The huge floating museum is in immaculate condition and teaches a good history lesson.

Literally a stone’s throw away, Texas State Aquarium is another popular attraction for the Gulf Coast road trip itinerary. The aquarium works to build a brighter future for the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and beyond. Its exhibits and fascinating creatures are enjoyable for animal lovers of all ages.

But a Corpus Christi visit is also about exploring the wild Texas coastline. Across the JFK causeway, on North Padre Island, you find the always peaceful Padre Island National Seashore . The park protects 66 miles (106 km) of wonderful coastline, boasting an incredibly spacious beach and ideal conditions for wildlife viewing. It’s an exceptional stop to further grasp the vastness and beauty of the Texas Gulf Coast.

3. Mustang Island, TX

  • Driving distance: 29 mi / 47 km
  • Driving time: 0.5 h

After exploring Corpus Christi and North Padre Island, the Gulf Coast journey continues further north. Only 30 minutes from Downtown Corpus Christi and next to North Padre Island, you find Mustang Island.

Mustang Island has 18 miles (29 km) of shoreline and wide sandy beaches to enjoy. Above all, it’s the perfect Texas destination to unwind as you road trip the Gulf Coast.

At the northern end of Mustang Island, you find the island’s town: Port Aransas. Also known as “Port A”, it’s a classic beach town full of character. In the downtown area of Port Aransas, you have everything you need for a pleasant vacation — including the beach, restaurants and shops — within walking distance.

Waves lapping quiet beach in Port Aransas

All over Mustang Island, you find an appreciated slow pace. The locals call it that you’re on island time when you visit Mustang Island.

The further south and away from the liveliness in Port A you go, the more secluded the setting gets until you reach Mustang Island State Park . There you in an untouched state park environment find all the room you need to recharge your batteries before you continue the ultimate road trip along the Mexican Gulf.

Serene shoreline on Mustang Island, TX

Additional stop: Rockport is an idyllic bayside town that’s a pretty addition to the Gulf Coast road trip. Its Rockport Beach is shorter than many other beaches on the itinerary but still appreciated. In addition, you in the area also find the smaller Goose Island State Park and more extensive Aransas National Wildlife Refuge , which both are popular spots for wildlife viewing.

Row of empty cabanas on Rockport Beach, TX

4. Galveston, TX

  • Driving distance: 220 mi / 354 km
  • Driving time: 4.5 h

Galveston can brag about mile after mile of sandy Gulf Coast beaches to relax on. But that’s just the start of everything that this coastal town brimming with history has to offer to the road trip along the Gulf Coast.

The historic Strand District, or just The Strand, is the heart of the town and island. Facing Galveston Bay, the historic-building-dotted district is recognized as a national historic landmark. In the outstanding setting, you find great potential for everything from daytime sightseeing and shopping to entertaining nightlife.

Not only in and around the Strand but throughout Galveston, there is a rich selection of history and museums to explore. The 1892 Bishop’s Palace is an old Galveston mansion that looks a lot like a castle from the outside. Its inside is full of architectural treasures and a must for history buffs to explore on the Gulf of Mexico road trip.

On the gulf side of Galveston, the historic Galveston Seawall since long protects the town from large waves. Built after the Galveston hurricane of 1900, the seawall is nowadays closely associated with the city. With the sea by your side, the seawall is an excellent stretch to walk, run or bike as you visit the historic Galveston.

Additional stop: Houston is the largest city in the Gulf Coast region and a must stop to include on the Texas to Florida itinerary if you want some big-city fun. Above all, the city is home to the renowned Houston Space Center where you get to learn all about space and space travel.

5. New Orleans, LA

  • Driving distance: 382 mi / 615 km
  • Driving time: 6 h

If you this deep into the road trip from Texas to Florida still feel any tension, it’s time to finally shake it off. New Orleans, also known as the Big Easy, values the easy going and appreciates all the temptations in life.

In the renowned French Quarter, you find a cocktail of historic French, Spanish, Creole and American architecture to admire. The district’s homes, with signature iron balconies, truly showcase the city’s multicultural heritage.

To take it all in, lace up your shoes and walk the heart of New Orleans, guided by street signs in both English and French.

The number one New Orleans street for visitors who want to let loose is Bourbon Street. It’s nothing less than a legendary spot for a cold drink on the Gulf Coast road trip. The neon green Hand Grenade is a popular New Orleans cocktail, but there are less shiny beverages to try too.

Just a few streets away from Bourbon Street, the timeless Mississippi River flows. North America’s second largest river is muddy, but you didn’t come to New Orleans to swim it anyway. Strolling along the riverfront is energizing, or you can take a steamboat cruise to experience the city from the river.

Hotel in the French Quarter in New Orleans, LA

Additional stop: Coastal Mississippi, between Louisiana and Alabama, is a destination off the beaten path. The Mississippi Gulf Coast, including Gulfport and Biloxi, is famous for its casino scene and delicious seafood offerings. But on the Mississippi Sound, you don’t find beaches that can compare to beaches further east on the Gulf Coast road trip itinerary.

Additional stop: On the way to Fairhope, you drive through the Alabama city of Mobile. In Mobile, you find interesting museums, such as Mobile Carnival Museum and the USS Alabama . Either visit Mobile attractions on the way from New Orleans, or take a day trip from the nearby Fairhope.

6. Fairhope, AL

  • Driving distance: 161 mi / 259 km
  • Driving time: 2.5 h

It’s hard to find a place along the Gulf Coast that’s more pleasant than Fairhope, Alabama. Often mentioned as one of the best small towns in the South, you can’t miss its charm when you stop by on the Texas to Florida Gulf Coast road trip.

Located a short distance from the much bigger Mobile, Fairhope appreciates the simple things in life. Among moss-covered oak trees and on streets surrounded by colorful flowers, it’s easy to enjoy yourself.

Downtown Fairhope is the town’s hub of activity. Here, on Fairhope Avenue, you find an eclectic mix of shops, cafés and restaurants. As you stroll the street, you can feel that warm southern hospitality.

At the end of Fairhope Avenue, a medium walk or a short drive from the downtown area, the landmark Fairhope Pier extends out into Mobile Bay. Watching a sunset from the pier, or anywhere else along Mobile Bay, is the perfect end to a day on your Gulf of Mexico journey.

7. Pensacola Beach, FL

  • Driving distance:  67 mi / 108 km
  • Driving time:  1.5 h

You know that you have arrived in the Sunshine State when all you see is seemingly endless sugar-white sand. Not far from the Alabama border, Santa Rosa Island welcomes visitors to the quintessential Florida.

Pensacola Beach is the island’s most well-known community. The pristine Gulf Coast destination has everything you need for a beach getaway — from dreamy hotels and quirky shops to yummy restaurants and fun bars — and, of course, lovely beaches.

On the popular Casino Beach, the 1,471 feet (448 m) long Pensacola Beach Fishing Pier is located. The pier stretches out into the Gulf of Mexico, offering spectacular views over the ocean and beach.

Bitumen road surrounded by white sand dunes on Santa Rosa Island

Although Casino Beach can be rather busy, it’s never hard to find a private spot on the spacious Santa Rosa Island. If you want to escape the crowds, just head either east or west from the island’s centerpiece pier.

To the east, between Pensacola Beach and the neighboring community Navarre Beach, the untouched beaches in Gulf Islands National Seashore appeal. Here, everywhere your eyes go, you find white beaches and the inviting Mexican Gulf.

In the other direction, on the western end of Santa Rosa Island, the historic Fort Pickens magnificently stands. It was completed in 1834, and exploring the fort is a highlight on the Gulf Coast itinerary. To no surprise, white beaches abound in the far west of Santa Rosa Island too.

More info: Where to stay in Pensacola

Passage through Fort Pickens in Pensacola Beach, FL

Additional stop: When you follow the Gulf Coast from Pensacola Beach to St. George Island, the route goes through Panama City Beach. The sublime Northwest Florida destination is a great addition to the itinerary if you crave for some more time on the beach.

8. St. George Island, FL

  • Driving distance: 171 mi / 275 km
  • Driving time: 4 h

As you reach St. George Island, you find a Northwest Florida destination much different than the more famous Pensacola Beach and Panama City Beach. Embrace the so called Forgotten Coast, a tranquil place without the liveliness found elsewhere.

There are no high rises on St. George Island, and you don’t find the endless selection of hotels and off-the-beach distractions that many other Florida destinations pride themselves for — how incredibly refreshing.

St. George Island is a splendid destination for some quiet time before the Gulf Coast road trip itinerary takes you down to South Florida. With its natural appearance still intact and an in general slower pace, the island offers the perfect opportunity to unwind.

On St. George Island, the uncomplicated things to do are the most appreciated ways to spend a day. Hitting the beach, hiking in St. George Island State Park or visiting the iconic St. George Island Lighthouse are highly valued island activities.

Considering the island’s undeniable beauty, it’s hard to imagine that such a gem ever could be forgotten. What St. George offers to the Gulf Coast road trip itinerary is humble but still alluring.

White lighthouse across a bridge on St. George Island, FL

9. Clearwater Beach, FL

  • Driving distance: 310 mi / 499 km

After St. George Island, the Texas to Florida road trip takes a real turn as it follows the Gulf Coast down south. In Central and South Florida, more beautiful palm-fringed beaches await.

First out, Clearwater Beach is an all-round beach destination catering to most roadtrippers. Unfold your towel and savor its 2.5 miles (4 km) long shoreline — it’s wide, sugar white and simply gorgeous.

But Clearwater Beach is an active beach town offering more than just a beautiful beach to the Gulf Coast itinerary. The southern part of town (around Pier 60) is lively with plenty of places to grab a bite, bars and shops.

As you find everything you need in Clearwater Beach, you can keep your car parked during your entire stay. However, for a change of scenery, there’s much more to explore in the immediate surroundings.

Directly north of Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Island is an untouched island where it’s easy to unwind. A stone’s throw to the south, Sand Key Park is another pristine spot for quiet Gulf Coast days in the sun — escaping the Clearwater crowds couldn’t be any easier.

More info: Best Clearwater hotels

Additional stop: Between Clearwater Beach and Sanibel Island, there are many more pretty destinations to add to the Gulf Coast road trip itinerary. Anna Maria Island, Siesta Key and Gasparilla Island are Island are only a few of the many stunning Florida Islands in the region.

10. Sanibel Island, FL

  • Driving distance: 165 mi / 266 km
  • Driving time: 3.5 h

Southwest Florida’s Sanibel Island is a real contrast to Clearwater Beach’s lively beach scene. When you cross Sanibel Causeway, the island’s only mainland connection, you go back to the basics.

Life on Sanibel is uncomplicated. Sure, the island is dotted with resorts, but no buildings are permitted to be taller than the tallest palm tree, and nature is everywhere around you.

In particular, J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge boasts an untouched Florida environment and superb wildlife viewing opportunities; it’s a haven for tropical birds of different sizes and colors.

There are numerous beaches to enjoy on Sanibel Island too. Sanibel Lighthouse Beach is a popular and scenic spot with a small pier, but the further west you go, the smaller the crowds get.

If you travel all the 11 miles (18 km) across the island to its westernmost point, you reach Blind Pass Bridge. It takes you to the neighboring Captiva Island where the laid-back Southwest Florida island life continues.

Additional stop: Naples is located on the southwestern edge of Florida. The pretty Florida city is known for its white beaches and upscale vibe. It’s one of the US cities with most millionaires per capita, and when you visit on the Gulf Coast road trip, it’s easy to see why.

11. Everglades, FL

  • Driving distance: 92 mi / 148 km
  • Driving time: 2 h

After Naples, pristine beaches give way for wild and untamed nature. Now, the Texas to Florida road trip reaches its climax for nature and animal lovers.

Everglades National Park protects 1.5 million acres of unique South Florida wilderness.

Make sure to look where you place your feet; it’s a busy park. Most famously, the area is home to the iconic American alligator; other Everglades reptiles include crocodiles, turtles, lizards and snakes.

But that’s just the start when it comes to wildlife viewing. On top of reptiles, a wide range of mammals and birds also thrive in the immense wetland — lucky visitors may spot the Florida panther.

To take full advantage of the setting, join a guided Everglades airboat tour. Numerous airboat companies happily take visitors deep into the exciting depths of the huge wetland.

Young or old, encountering tropical animals in their vast and timeless habitat is an extraordinary experience. Everglades wildlife viewing is a memory for life to bring with you home from the Texas to Florida road trip.

Is there a nice route to go and that might be shorter than others to minimize the drive time to get there? I just don't know what to expect and how long it will actually take? Just thought I would ask the veterans that know! Thanks in advance!!!

You basically take I-10 the whole way, but you should take I-12 from Baton Rouge to Hammond, LA to avoid New Orleans (you get right back on I-10). Most directions that include I-10 going from west to east will send you this way, and its not like a hard exit to find...it will save you 1/2 hour.

The only option you have is how to get south to the gulf (Rt. 98) from I-10. There are 4 ways, the first is through Pensacola (traffic) which leaves a long stretch on 98 (traffic). Second heads south a little further down 10, taking 281 to 98. This is the Google suggestion, which is what we took on the way down. Bridge toll is $3.75, and is probably the fastest option. Third is to head south on 87 (a little further down 10). 87 is one lane each way, but has no toll and cuts the distance on 98 down. Lastly is taking 10 all the way to 85 then south through Niceville and across the Mid-Bay Bridge (out of the way, and a congested toll bridge on Saturdays).

Use option 2 or 3. We did #2 down and #3 back, and it was the same amount of time.

Yes, we had a 15 and 12 year old on the way down, and somehow picked up another 12 year old on the way home (my niece, who's staying with us another week then heading home to Ohio).

My kids are real troopers on these long trips, as we have driven back home to Cleveland with them several times, and went out west last year. 10 hours is about the limit for the average teens or multiple kids, any further and splitting days would be wise.

We have portable DVD players that mount on the back of the headrest, and they are a lifesaver. And tell your husband I did all the driving, so he can, too. Just smack him around every couple of hours, or drop ice cubes down his shirt to keep him alert.

Well he will be doing the driving LOL. We have a portable DVD player as well as Nintendo DS's and other games etc., I will also think of some games to play in the van to pass the time.

Where did ya'll stay?

My advice to myself for our next trip will be to stay maybe a little closer to the harbor, as we did a lot of crosstown driving during the week (although Miramar has some advantages as well).

I noticed you're staying at the Islander, which I saw, and I think you'll love it.

By the way, my brother drove down from Ohio to meet us, and he bought some audio books to listen to on the way. Maybe you could gear up the kids with headphones for their games/DVDs while you and the hubby listen to a good book. Just don't get something too boring or, conversely, too steamy or he may end up in a ditch.

I know the Cracker Barrel rents the audio books too, and you can return them at any of their locations further on in your trip.

Enjoy your stay.

When my daughter was small we would travel at night and she would sleep most of the way down. We would also back the swimsuits so we could get to them easily when we arrived in case our unit would not be ready when we arrrived and my daughter could go swimming at the pool or hit the beach.

I would go I-10 to 12 to I-10 to 87 or to Mid-Bay bridge (we go every year).

Distance between Houston and Destin

Driving non-stop from houston to destin.

How far is Destin from Houston? Here's the quick answer if you don't sleep at all, or you have a friend with you so each person can drive some of the way, letting you make the entire trip by car without stopping.

Nonstop drive: 573 miles or 922 km

Driving time: 8 hours, 42 minutes

This is a pretty long drive, so it's not very realistic to drive nonstop. To get a better idea of how long this road trip would really be, scroll down to calculate how many hours it would take if you drive with stops .

Flying non-stop from Houston to Destin

Now let's assume you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line between Houston, Texas and Destin, Florida. Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

Flight distance: 533 miles or 858 km

Flight time: 1 hour, 12 minutes

The straight line flight distance is 40 miles less than driving on roads, which means the driving distance is roughly 1.1x of the flight distance.

Your plane flies much faster than a car, so the flight time is about 1/6th of the time it would take to drive.

This is a medium length flight, so unless you have a nice private jet, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. Scroll down to see a more realistic calculation that takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

Houston to Destin road trip

Let's say you're actually planning a road trip to Destin, and you want to stop along the way to rest. If it's a real road trip, you might want to check out interesting stops along the way, eat at great restaurants, and maybe even find a hotel to stay overnight. That's what Trippy is perfect for, helping you figure out travel plans in detail.

Based on the length of this trip, we think you could spread out this fun road trip over more than one day.

Road trip: 2 days of driving

With the full itinerary planned out, we can estimate your total travel time for this trip.

Travel time: 10 hours on the road with 1 overnight

Start in Houston .

Drive for about 1.5 hours , then stop in Beaumont and stay for about 1 hour. Next, drive for another 1.5 hours then stop in Lake Charles and stay for 1 hour. Drive for 1 hour then stop in Lafayette and stay for 1 hour. Drive for 59 minutes then stop in Baton Rouge . Stay overnight. The next day, drive for about 2.5 hours , then stop in Biloxi and stay for about 1 hour. Next, drive for another 1 hour then stop in Mobile and stay for 1 hour. Drive for 54 minutes then stop in Pensacola and stay for 1 hour. Finally, drive for about 1 hour and arrive in Destin .

Houston to Destin airports and flights

In the quick calculation above, we assumed you had a private plane and just wanted to know the time in the air from city to city. But for most of us, we're going to be flying on a commercial airline (whether it's first class or coach). So that means we really need to account for all the extra travel time getting to the airport, waiting for our flight, and making it to the destination.

To give you a better estimate of real-life travel, we've put together a flight itinerary with actual airports. Eventually you'll be able to customize this plan, choosing your own airports and flights. But for now, here's an example we've selected to give you an idea of how traveling might work between airports.

Departure airport: George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

Arrival airport: Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS)

With the airports selected, we can estimate the travel time to and from the airport, based on how far the airport is from downtown.

Getting to the airport: 47 minutes

Getting to your destination: 23 minutes

Now finally, let's look at an actual flight from IAH to VPS on United Airlines and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

Commercial flight time: 1 hour, 24 minutes

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from Houston to Destin including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 5 hours

Note that this is just a glimpse of the beauty of the parkway. If you would like more information on the Natchez Trace Parkway and the best way to enjoy its scenery to the fullest, please see our detailed guide for more information .

The New Orleans Route

Head out of Austin and make the slow descent towards Houston, this state's busiest and largest city that's got some really interesting museums on offer, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

Once you've had your fill of this city, continue along Interstate 10 (I-10) eastbound, passing through the smaller cities of Beaumont and Lafayette. Take the exit towards Lafayette and continue along US-90 E to New Orleans.

This detour will take you through Natchez as well as Jackson and has been celebrated for the stunning scenic landscapes it offers on the way to and through these cities.

When you've had your fill of Jackson, you can make your way south to Hattiesburg and Mobile, before continuing towards Destin.

These luxurious offerings include a heated rooftop pool, a fitness center and a full-service spa. To top it off, you can choose to dine at Criollo, their on-site restaurant offering traditional Creole cuisine, or grab a bar in the stunning Carousel Bar.

Explore the port city of Mobile

About two hours from Destin, you'll find the beautiful city of Mobile, Alabama. This city makes a great overnight stop and is actually accessible via both the New Orleans Route and the Natchez Trace Parkway Route.

Mobile is a port city and the oldest city in Alabama, offering a slew of cultural attractions including some unique buildings that draw from a variety of architectural styles, as well as several very cool museums.

If you're looking to discover some of this city's most interesting attractions, we recommend starting with the USS Alabama, a ship that's docked in Mobile Bay and located within the USS Alabama National Park.

Best time to go on a road trip from Austin to Destin, Florida

Once you've found your vacation destination, the next big question is: when do we go? While you can certainly visit this sunny beach destination any time of year, the most recommended time to visit Destin is during the late spring and early fall, when you'll be able to avoid the muggy summers and cooler winters.

Summer in Destin tends to be a little rainy and muggy with temperatures ranging between 71 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Paradoxically, this season is the busiest for tourism, so we suggest you avoid visiting during the summer if you're not a fan of crowds or if you're sensitive to humidity and heat.

Destin Florida during morning sunrise

Winter tends to be very quiet in Destin, as the temperatures drop down as low as the mid-forties, and the waters are too cold for swimming. That being said, you'll typically find some great deals accommodation-wise during this time of year.

We recommend visiting Destin in the spring and fall when tourism levels dip and accommodation prices fall as well. You'll be able to get a good deal, while also enjoying some sunny weather, with temperatures ranging between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Except for during the wintertime, you'll find tons of festivals happening in Destin, so you're sure to enjoy some great events when you visit.

Some of our favorites include the Tequila and Taco Fest and Burning Up the Beaches Fest in the spring, as well as the Destin Seafood Festival and Destin Fishing Rodeo in the fall.
