Jets' Tarik Cohen: Signing with Gang Green

Cohen agreed to a one-year contract with the Jets on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Cohen will turn 29 years old in July and hasn't played in an NFL game since Week 3 of the 2020 season, when he suffered an ACL tear that derailed a promising career. He missed all of 2021 while rehabbing from the knee injury and all of 2022 after suffering a torn Achilles' tendon during the spring. Cohen then landed with the Panthers in 2023 and spent most of the season on their practice squad, but he struggled with a hamstring injury, never got a promotion and ultimately was released in early May. He's unlikely to make noise in a backfield that has Breece Hall and two incoming draft picks, but Cohen should get a look on kick and punt returns this offseason.

PORT-AU-PRINCE – Hundreds of people packed into a sweltering church in Haiti's capital on Tuesday to mourn Judes Montis, a mission director killed by gang members who also fatally shot an American couple that worked with him.

Wails filled the crowded church during the early morning service as tears streamed down the face of Montis’ wife. The service also honored the lives of Davy and Natalie Lloyd, a married couple in their early 20s who were with Montis when gunmen ambushed them on Thursday night as they left a youth group activity held at a local church.

Montis, 47, leaves behind a wife, two children, ages 2 and 6, and a brother who was present the night that the killings occurred.

“We’ll never forget you or the path you created for others!” cried out one mourner as the crowd dressed in black and white made its way from the church to the cemetery.

The service was held just days after the three were killed in a gang-controlled area in a northern part of Port-au-Prince where Montis worked as the local director of the Oklahoma-based Missions in Haiti, a religious organization founded by David and Alicia Lloyd, Davy Lloyd’s parents.

“We are facing the most difficult time of our life,” Missions in Haiti said in a recent Facebook post. “Thank you for all your prayers and support.”

Montis’ brother, Esuaue Montis, a 43-year-old Spanish teacher with the mission, told The Associated Press that he was nearby during the shootings. He said that he saw the gunmen arrive and he used a truck to block the gate before he started running with several orphans and employees in tow.

The group got separated, and when Esuaue Montis jumped over one wall, he encountered a group of armed men. They pushed him to the ground and stepped on him as one gunman asked people in the area if they recognized him while another said, “He works at the orphanage. Kill him.”

In that moment, his phone rang. It was a friend whom he had called earlier in a frenzy to tell him about the situation.

“This call is going to save you or going to kill you,” he recalled one gunman telling him as he ordered Montis to answer the phone.

His friend lied and told the men that Esuaue Montis didn't work at the orphanage.

“He gave me back the phone and left,” Montis said of the gunman.

He hasn't returned to the organization’s school where he worked and is now looking to flee Haiti.

“How will I be able to continue working in the orphanage, not seeing Jude next to me?” Esuaue Montis said between tears. “My brother checked on me all the time. If I went out in the afternoon, he would call and say, ‘Brother, where are you?’”

Montis said the mission had never been threatened before, adding that gang members in the area had only asked for small handouts on occasion.

While Jude Montis was buried in Port-au-Prince, Missions in Haiti said that the U.S. Embassy is working on obtaining the documents needed for the bodies of the Lloyds to be flown to the U.S., adding that it has relocated its staff and others to a safer location.

A Facebook post from Cassidy Anderson, a spokesperson for the family, on Tuesday stated that “transport has been completely secured,” but that no information would be released because of security concerns.

Natalie Lloyd, 21, is the daughter of Missouri state Rep. Ben Baker. He wrote on Facebook that he spoke by phone Monday with former U.S. President Donald Trump , who called to express his condolences.

“He mentioned how sorry he was that this evil happened to our kids and how beautiful their devotion was to their calling and to the people of Haiti,” Baker wrote.

In a recent interview with the AP, Davy Lloyd’s sister, Hannah Cornett, recalled how they grew up in Haiti because their parents are full-time missionaries, and that her brother learned Creole before he spoke English.

She said her parents run an orphanage, school and church in Haiti, and that she and her brothers grew up with the orphans.

Cornett said that the night of the killings, three vehicles carrying gang members had stopped the Lloyds and Montis, hitting her 23-year-old brother with the barrel of a gun and tying him up at his home as they stole their belongings. As people helped untie Davy Lloyd, another group of gunmen appeared and an unidentified person got shot, she said.

The gunmen then opened fire as the Lloyds and Montis tried to take cover in the house where her parents live, she said, adding that their bodies were set on fire.

Haiti’s National Police condemned the killings in a rare statement, and extended its condolences to the families of the victims, vowing to arrest those responsible.

However, it’s rare for Haitian gangs involved in high-profile kidnappings or killings to be arrested, since the police department is chronically under-resourced and understaffed. Gangs control at least 80% of Haiti’s capital, and violence continues unabated as the country awaits the U.N.-backed deployment of a Kenyan police force that once again has been delayed.

30 Years Ago: Eagles Launch Their ‘Hell Freezes Over’ Reunion Tour

I n 1980, Don Henley was practically certain that Eagles would never reunite, famously telling a reporter that they would get back together “when hell freezes over.”

In July of that year, the band came to a dramatic end at a show in Long Beach, California, where Don Felder and Glenn Frey butted heads so severely there was nearly a physical altercation. As Henley would succinctly put it to People in 1982: “1980 was a terrible year.”

But over a decade later, the mood started to shift. In 1993, an Eagles tribute album, Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles , was released, featuring covers performed by various country acts. At the end of that year, Henley, Frey, Felder, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit all appeared in the video for Travis Tritt ‘s cover of “Take It Easy,” and plans were hatched for a reunion. In April of 1994, they filmed an MTV special , which resulted in the 11-track live album, Hell Freezes Over .

“For the record, we never broke up; we just took a 14-year vacation,” Frey joked at that concert.

From there, Eagles decided to keep the train rolling, launching the Hell Freezes Over tour on May 27, 1994 in Irvine, California, a 30-minute drive from where the band imploded over a decade earlier.

“It’s a relief,” Frey said prior to the show. “You know, we’ve been rehearsing for so long and we’ve been playing for men who don’t clap: our crew. So it’s like, now we got paying customers. … For some reason everyone has a wonderful calm right now. I think we’re excited to get out and play. I’m actually not nervous yet.”

Schmit used the same word that evening before the show: “I’ll tell you, the mood is very calm. … I think it’ll get more aggressive as it gets closer to showtime, but everybody’s about as ready as can be. We’ve worked really hard — really hard — six, seven day weeks for the last six weeks, maybe two months.

“We’ve all gotten older and wiser,” he continued. “Everybody’s a lot clearer, let’s say. … We’re not looking back, we’re just focusing on what’s ahead.”

But, as Frey pointed out, this was just night one of an extensive tour, with dates lined up through October: “This is just the first of 66 games we gotta play this season. It’s not the Super Bowl yet.”

The evening’s 28-song set list featured plenty of Eagles classics — “Hotel California,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Life in the Fast Lane,” etc. — as well as some solo selections, including but not limited to: Frey’s “Silent Spring,” Henley’s “ The Boys of Summer ” and Walsh’s “ Life’s Been Good .” (A full set list can be viewed below.) At the end of it all, the band played not one but three encores.

After the concert, Henley echoed the words Frey has used pre-show. “It’s a relief,” he said . “Because I don’t think we’ll be as nervous now. I was really fine until I got out there [ laughs ], and heard the roar.”

Eagles would go on to play 160 shows over the course of 1994-1996, becoming one of the most lucrative tours in all of rock history.

“It’s a good feeling to be up there with the guys,” Henley said after that first show. “I think this is just going to get better as it goes on.”

What you need to know for the Master Gardeners Le Tour des Jardins

The Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners annual spring garden tour, Le Tour des Jardi ns , promises a chance to be inspired with a look at six wonderful garden this year.

Pam Tully is excited to be one of the homes on the tour this year. "It's been on my bucket list," she said, "It's just really mean meaningful to me." Her garden in a combination of flowers and vegetables with informational cards spread throughout, "I love teaching and I love gardening, so teaching about gardening is the ultimate."

The tour is self guided and can be achieved in any order. Proceeds from the garden tour help fund future Master Gardener projects and help promote the mission to enhance the quality of knowledge for gardeners in the community.

The Garden Bazaa r will be held during the tour at the Red River Research Station in South Bossier and will have food trucks and vendors. Tour the Louisiana Super Plants gardens, a project of the Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners and hear Mark Wilson, Northwest Louisiana Horticulture Extension agent, discuss Louisiana Super Plants and answer any questions.

It is at this location that tickets can be purchased using credit/debit cards.

Pam and Rick Tully Garden .  Located in the Anderson Island neighborhood of Shreveport, this creative display of flowers and vegetables have a variety of tomato plants, blueberry bushes, peppers and green beans.

Jeffrey Knighton and David Newcomer Garden .  Located in the heart of South Highlands, this garden maximizes the backyard to include flower beds along the border with interesting artwork and an amazing water feature. There are so many spots to relax and enjoy a cool drink, along with an area for entertaining with friends.

Grady and Greg Morrison Garden . This South Highlands charmer has Limelight hydrangeas, colorful front beds and a stone pathway that guides you to the backyard where there is a beautiful pool, gazebo and colorful pots.

Debbie and Bill Frye Garden . This Southwest Shreveport garden offers over 120 varieties of flowers including hydrangeas, iris, daylilies and much more. Every plant is labeled so you are sure to leave with ideas to try at home in your own garden.

Tour hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 1, and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 2. Anders Lee was named the winner of the NHL’s King Clancy Memorial Trophy on Tuesday night, honoring his leadership on the ice and his charitable contributions off it.

Lee, the Islanders’ captain, is heavily involved with the Jam Kancer Foundation .

He hosted a Kan Jam event at Northwell Health Ice Center before the season and funds scholarships through the foundation in memory of his friend Fenov Pierre-Louis, who died of neuroblastoma in 2018.

Lee has funded 24 scholarships and is taking applications for five more this season.

He also hosts families impacted by cancer at every Islanders home game and hosts an annual gifting initiative for them during the holidays.

As part of the award, Lee will receive a $25,000 donation from the NHL to a charity of his choice.

He is also eligible to elect that the Islanders receive a $20,000 grant to organize a special activation related to his cause.

This is Lee’s first time winning the award.
