NIGHTMARE! Back in December I had told my son we would go on a cruise with his best friend and family for his graduation. His friends Mom called Ernie, who was a travel hub 365 specialist , and booked our trip. We were told it was a great deal lots of perks and an upgraded room. I called Ernie to pay. After giving him the information on who I was paying for and my credit card, my card number was immediately stolen! I called him back and told him not only was my card stolen he charged me $252.06 to much. He told me he would give the money back and he was sorry but it must of been on Royals end my card was stolen. After waiting weeks for my money I called back and he said he needed the new card number to give me the credit. Against my better judgment I gave it to him once again and it was stolen again! I then got an email from Stephen asking if I was trying to cancel a room. I told him my situation and that I was not canceling anything, I just wanted my money. He let me know later Ernie had messed up on other reservations. And moving forward he would help me and to block Ernie, due to the fact he was harassing me after he found out I talked with Stephen. Ernie apparently got this great deal on a Jr suite by lying and booking the room like I was handicapped. Stephen informed me he had to downgrade the room due to the way Ernie booked it but would contact Royal on my behalf and see if he could get on board credits to buffer this for me. Since I now was not getting what I was told I was buying. Stephen also said he would give me the $252 and apologized! Stephen did finally get me the money. I finally had my refund 3 months later. He had apologized several times and let me know another client had their card stolen and Ernie had messed up more reservations. He said he was still working on contacting Royal for the resolution. The next day Stephan email me that his attorney had advised him he was not responsible and that Ernie was not allowed to use his company anymore and he couldn't help me moving forward I would need to contact Ernie. So now I have no travel agent to help on my behalf With the situation and have no one to ask any questions I may have about my upcoming trip! This has been extremely disappointing and stressful!

I recently booked a Maui vacation with Travel Hub 365 and was truly impressed with the service I received. As a busy professional, I had little time to plan a vacation this year so I asked Stephen Scott, my travel agent, to plan a few options for me to select from. Within hours, Stephen had a number of vacation plans, all of which were excellent selections and accurately reflected the details of my request. In addition, Stephen and his team came up with a number of activities in Maui to enhance my overall vacation experience. Throughout the booking process, Stephen was very professional, knowledgeable and extremely patient as I went back and forth as to which plan worked best for me. I never felt rushed or compelled to make a decision and Stephen was available along the way to guide me and answer all my questions. Even while in Maui, I reached out to Stephen to further modify my vacation request. He was absolutely receptive and immediately addressed my request which allowed me to completely focus on my vacation. In all aspects, I had an amazing time in Maui, and much of it was due to the planning and expertise of Stephen and his team. I truly appreciate the care and concern they demonstrated and am grateful for the wonderful service they provided. Travel Hub 365 went above and beyond my expectations and did everything right! I look forward to using Travel Hub 365 to book all my future vacations. I'd highly recommend this agency to anyone looking for a perfectly planned getaway! Thank you, Stephen!

Great service! Stephen and his team do all the legwork for you. Have booked a few trips with them so far and everything was as expected. Great deals and packages available, many places to choose from, and excellent customer service. Can't say enough about them and look forward to using them again. Thanks!!

Photo of Scott K.

Booked a trip through Stephen and his staff. The service was OUTSTANDING from time of booking all the way through my return home. I didn't encounter any issues on the trip, but received an e-mail from them while on the trip to see how we were doing. So great to know they were there if I needed them. Can't say enough good things... would higly recommend!

Insider Tips for Visiting New York for the First Time

NYC tourist

The Big Apple will always have the key to our hearts. This is one of the most visited and iconic destinations on the planet!

You could spend a month in NYC and still have loads left to see, but if you are planning a trip for the very first time and are on a tight budget, there are some important things to know.

Here are our top tips for enjoying the highlights of New York City without spending a fortune.

Getting Around

Get Lost The great thing about New York is that every area has its own vibe and its own claim to fame. Turn a block and you can feel like you’re in a completely different city. Head to Greenwich Village for intimate but metropolitan vibes and independent shops, or if you’re into class, sass and history, opt for DUMBO’s warehouse chic.

Know Your Subway Options Granted, the London underground is much more manic than New York, so if you’ve survived that, you can survive the subway. However, we need to warn you that the likelihood of you getting lost either below or above ground is about 80%. The good news is, the subway has Wi-Fi so make sure you load Google Maps to make sure you don’t start walking east and north instead of west and south…

Yellow Taxis Just how people make a big deal out of our red phone boxes, we make a fuss over the iconic yellow taxi. We don’t know why, but they just feel cooler, OK? Make sure to keep any taxi journeys short and sweet because it can get pricey, but if you want to live the blockbuster dream, then splash out on a ride across Brooklyn Bridge!

Tourist Attractions

Be a tourist and don your I Love New York tee with pride, take photos every 0.2 seconds and flash your map like it’s nobody’s business. On a visit to NYC, you HAVE to do the Empire State Building. Go late for super short queues and panoramic views from 86 floors up.

Also, don’t be a tourist Ok, don’t always be that guy… Even in just 48 hours, you can enjoy New York without running around like a headless chicken. Enjoy hidden New York, from the old City Hall station that you can see while on the 6 train back uptown, the beautiful Washington Mews or even a part of the Berlin Wall (who knew?!).

Where to Eat

There are SO many restaurants in New York, from trendy underground haunts to tiny quirky joints serving pizza by the slice to rival that of Italy.

Treat Yourself For a special occasion you have to book Beauty & Essex. Do not let the name fool you, this is one of the hottest and classiest spots in town. It is also one of the hardest restaurants to find as the front is disguised as an antique pawn shop. Quirky! The food is American tapas with a twist. Be sure to order the Grilled Cheese with Smoked Bacon & Tomato Soup Dumplings. A-mazing!

The Dollar Slice Everyone loves pizza, and you can bet your bottom dollar that New Yorkers know how to do it best. Get yourself a slice of the good stuff from dollar slice vendors across the city. 2 Bros Pizza is a great shout for doughy goodness, but if you can spare more than one dollar for your dinner, then head to Joe’s – the institution in pizza magic.

Burgers Move aside McDonalds and Burger King, for a cheap and cheerful bite, and not to mention the best burger you will ever have, head to the chilled out but buzzing Burger Joint hidden behind a red velvet curtain in the Le Parker Meridien hotel. The hotel may be posh, but this hidden gem is the opposite – a great casual spot! There is often a queue (it is SO worth it), but try and go at off peak hours if you can, for a late lunch or an early dinner.

Brunch If brunch is more thing…

Brunch is a rite of passage in the States, especially in New York City. If you are in town on the weekend and fancy a boozy bottomless brunch head to Paradou in the trendy Meatpacking district. This is a popular spot so be sure to book before you go. It gets pretty rowdy with big groups so do not expect a quite meal for two. The drinks keep flowing and the pulled pork sliders are the best I have ever tasted!

If you are after a more casual and quiet affair without the booze check out Penelope in the Kips Bay neighbourhood. This is a great local spot with sensational brunch options – go for the buttermilk pancakes. For one of the most famous brunch restaurants in town (thanks to Gossip Girl) make your way to Sarabeth’s on Central Park South. A very popular spot, with a few more tourists than the other two but still a great choice for a delish start to the day!

Bars and Nightlife

You’ve got the evening to kill and yes, you definitely should go to Times Square at night even though it will be incredibly busy. But, once you’re done with all that, head to the Dead Rabbit, an amazing Irish Bar on Water Street for whiskey cocktails galore. If whiskey’s not your potion, there is a huge list of must-try bars waiting to be discovered!

Where to Shop

When heading across the pond, shopping has to be on your agenda. You need to be strategic when planning your day so that you don’t have to travel too far with too many bags – if you are anything like me that can end up being quite painful. So pick an area and conquer it!

I would begin a day’s shopping on 5th Avenue at around 43rd street, this is just two blocks from The New York Public Library and Bryant Park. Walking along 5th towards Central Park you will be in shopping heaven, from upmarket designer stores to a massive Forever 21, Urban Outfitters and loads more.

Once you hit Central Park, head east towards 3rd Avenue and 56th street to the infamous Bloomingdales. I LOVE this department store, think of a Harrods and Selfridges hybrid. Be sure to go to the visitors section before you start shopping as you can get a money off voucher when you show your non-American ID!

On a separate shopping day head to Soho, a melting pot of every variety of fashion you can think of and such a lovely area to get lost in. And of course, no trip to New York is complete without getting your Bloomingdale’s little brown bag!

We can’t think why NYC wouldn’t be on your travel list, with so much to do and see – I’d recommend going three times a year if you could! Good job you can get cheap flights to NYC pretty much all year round.

New York at a Glance

Best time to travel to new york.

Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience.  The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect!

Paying in New York

You can pay for almost everything with your credit card, even the smallest amounts. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, stores, restaurants, and bars. Don’t have one yet? Then, check out the best credit card to have in the USA here.

Best Way to Travel in New York

Finding your way around New York is quite easy, even if it doesn’t look like it at first. The streets’ checkerboard pattern makes finding your way around easy. These are the best ways to get around New York:

Metro / Subway: If you have longer distances ahead of you, then the Subway is your friend, because here you can travel really cheap. It’s easy to use! The MetroCard is available at every Subway station. You can buy single rides or the popular MetroCard for 7 days; that way you can travel for a week in New York at a fixed price. You can learn more about using the  Metrocard in New York here.

Taxi:  In New York, you can choose between the Yellow Cab and Uber. You can check out our tips and all the information you need to know in our following blog:  Taxi in New York City .

By bike: With many of the New York sightseeing passes (you can find out more about this budget tip in my New York Pass comparison ), the bike rental is included. We ourselves really love using New York’s Citi Bikes. This city bike program has over 1,000 stations throughout New York City, and it’s super-cheap. We’ll show you how it works in the Citi Bike New York article.

On Foot: You’ll be surprised how much walking you’ll do in New York. After all, there’s something to see on every corner. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Where to Stay in New York?

Which neighborhood is best for you depends on several things: your interests, how close you want to be to the attractions and what your travel budget is. In the image below, I’ve drawn you my favorite neighborhoods of New York including the main attractions nearby.

And, on the subject of safety: In all of Manhattan, the Bronx , Brooklyn, and large parts of Queens, you don’t have to worry about being out and about in the evening. New York City is one of the safest cities in the world!

More than 100 hotels and over 70 neighborhoods to choose from –and after just 4 quick questions, I’ll show you which hotels in New York are best suited for you!

Where Should you Stay in New York?

where to stay in New york

Manhattan – it doesn’t get more central than this: Manhattan is the most famous borough of them all. Plus, it contains 95% of all the attractions New York is known for. Everything is within easy reach, and you are right in the middle of it all. On the other hand, the hotels are a bit more expensive than in Brooklyn or Queens .

Here, you can find my 33 hotel tips for Manhattan .

Brooklyn – urban and relaxed: For a long time, Brooklyn was the insider’s tip: now it’s “completely” normal neighborhoods. However, you’ll quickly notice one thing: life is much more normal, because it’s more of a residential area. It’s super relaxed, pleasant, and just as diverse as Manhattan. Above all, you can enjoy the Manhattan skyline from here!

Here, you can find my 20 hotel tips for Brooklyn .

Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Here, you can find my 20 hotel tips for Queens .

What to See in New York?

One thing to know in advance: just because there is so much to see in New York, a little planning makes absolute sense. For highlights like the Empire State Building ( here ), the Edge Hudson Yards observation deck ( here ) or the One World Observatory ( here ), I recommend buying the tickets online in advance. This will not only save you waiting time on site, but you can also be sure that you will actually be able to visit your desired sights.

👉 These are our 33 best attractions in New York .

These are my tips after more than 20 visits to New York:

  • Observation decks:  New York City has no less than five (!) major observation decks to offer, and each one is a dream in itself. My two favorites are The Edge Hudson Yards and the One World Observatory , because from here you have a sensational view of New York from above and you can see the Empire State Building . From the end of 2021, another cool option will be added with the glass One Vanderbilt . One more thing about the Empire State Building: It’s the most visited observation deck in New York, so it’s always busy. Avoid the crowds in the morning – and if you really want to go to the Empire State Building in the evening, choose Thursday, Friday or Saturday. During those times, a saxophonist plays on the observation deck. Important: book the Skip-the-Line-Tickets (you can do that here). Then, you can easily save 1-2 hours of waiting time!
  • Visit the Statue of Liberty : The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now.
  • Definitely take a boat tour , because seeing New York from the water is like being on vacation. Choices range from the free Staten Island Ferry or the NYC Ferry ($2.90 each way) to sailing tours (gorgeous) and the classic sightseeing tours that are included with all major New York passes.
  • Walk along the High Line from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards .
  • Visit Times Square in the evening – that’s when it’s at its most impressive.
  • Relax in Central Park or Bryant Park .
  • Plan a maximum of three attractions per day . After all, you don’t want any sightseeing stress.

Itinerary New York 4 to 6 days

This itinerary contains over 50 spots and highlights of the city, including a map that shows you the best way to travel each day, taking you to or past the many big attractions. In addition, we‘ve added our favorite places, from great breakfast spots to start your day right to small bars and restaurants and hidden insider spots.

What to Do in New York?

For me, an unforgettable New York trip includes the following things in addition to visiting the main sights:

Go Shopping

New York is also really good for shopping. There are many small shopping spots and addresses, but also the big brands can often be found with flagship stores. If that’s not enough, you can go shopping in one of the outlets and flea markets of New York.

The best shopping areas in New York are Broadway, SoHo , Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. And, of course, 5th Avenue!

Avoid Times Square for shopping!

A real tourist trap are the stores around Times Square – they are not only overpriced, but also the quality is not right in most cases!

Visit a rooftop bar.

I love the rooftop bars of New York . You can sit and relax, enjoy a sensational view of the city and listen to relaxing music. All this mixes with the so-typical sounds of the city in the background, and if you have something delicious to drink or eat on top of that, it can’t get any better! Visit a Broadway Show

New York is known for its many musicals and Broadway shows – most of which are performed in the Theatre District around Times Square. Here are our tips on the  best Broadway Shows in New York . If you already know which Broadway show you want to see, I recommend ordering the tickets in advance ( here ). If you’re still flexible, you can buy leftover tickets at TKTS in Times Square, for example.

Attend a Parade or Special Event

OK, hotel is booked, attractions are on the list, the myNY itinerary is ready, shopping spots are sighted and the first restaurants and bars are also noted. Now comes the last step on the list to the perfect travel planning for New York: the events, parades, and holidays.

They are the icing on the cake of every New York vacation and, therefore, could not be missed in our New York Travel Guide! Just check out our monthly specials that are relevant to you:  January , February , March , April , May , June , July , August , September , October , November and December .

Enjoying the Gastro Scene (in the Evening)

Now comes one of my favorite parts of planning our New York trips: the city’s many bars, restaurants, rooftop bars, and food markets. In our travel guide and insider guides on the website, we put a lot of emphasis on finding the best gastro spots and rooftop bars. AAA Travel Editor, SMS

Table of contents, how to get around nyc, top 5 best places to stay in nyc, top 5 things to do in nyc, top 5 best places to eat in new york, nyc travel tips, plan your new york trip with aaa.

No matter what you’re into — sports, art, music, history, business, culture, parks — you’ll find it in New York City, making it one of America’s top travel destinations . It has plenty to do that will entertain everyone from your toddler to your grandmother, but that can make prioritizing what to see when you visit a challenge.

AAA has been helping members plan trips to the Big Apple for decades, and we’ve compiled all our knowledge into this New York travel guide. Read on to learn everything you need to plan an unforgettable trip.

travel 365 new york

First, let’s cover the basics of New York City.

Eastern Standard Time

American dollar

New York City is the most expensive city in the United States, with Manhattan having a cost of living index that’s 237.8% higher than the national average. That means you’ll need to budget more carefully for your trip than if you were traveling to another city.

The average daily travel cost per person per day for New York City is $326. You can expect to spend the following each day:

  • At least $165 for your hotel
  • At least $50 for food
  • At least $102 for entertainment, transportation, tipping, etc.

This cost varies greatly depending on:

  • Where you stay
  • Where you eat
  • How you get around
  • What types of attractions you visit

New York City is located on the Eastern Seaboard. The weather is relatively temperate , with lots of sunshine throughout the year.

  • Spring: Temperatures range from cool to warm, averaging 50.3 degrees Fahrenheit, with occasional light rain.
  • Summer: Summers tend to be hot and humid, especially in late summer. The average temperature is 73.6 degrees Fahrenheit. While the city is on the East Coast, the threat of hurricanes is relatively minor, as most veer back out to sea before reaching the city.
  • Fall: Fall is one of the best times to visit New York City, though it is a bit chilly, with an average temperature of 56.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Winter: While major snowstorms like Nor’easters are rare, New York City does see some snowfall each year, although snowfall totals have dropped significantly over the past few years. The average winter temperature is 33 degrees Fahrenheit.

New York City Boroughs

New York City is spread over 302 square miles and three principal islands (Manhattan Island, Long Island and Staten Island), plus several smaller islands. The city is split into five separate boroughs, which are essentially mini cities within New York City itself. Each borough offers its own unique character and attractions for tourists.

The Bronx is the northernmost borough, and it’s home to the New York Yankees and considered the birthplace of rap and hip hop. While it was one of the poorest and most crime-ridden boroughs in New York during the 20th century, it has emerged as a trendy and ethnically diverse cultural hotspot. Most tourists don’t make it the Bronx, but if they do, they check out the following attractions:

  • Yankee Stadium
  • New York Botanical Garden
  • Pelham Bay Park
  • Woodlawn Cemetery
  • Little Italy
  • Universal Hip Hop Museum

Brooklyn , located at the western tip of Long Island, is the most populous borough. Its distinctive brownstones are iconic in movies set in New York, and it’s a melting pot of cultures, languages and ethnicities. The borough is known for its independent art scene, delicious pizza and gorgeous Manhattan skyline views. Popular Brooklyn attractions include:

  • Brooklyn Bridge
  • Brooklyn Botanic Garden
  • Prospect Park
  • Coney Island
  • New York Aquarium

Manhattan is geographically the smallest borough, but it’s also the most densely populated. When someone thinks of New York City, this is most likely the area they think of since it’s the cultural, entertainment, administrative and financial center of New York City. Located on Manhattan Island, visitors weave between skyscrapers and visit the hundreds of attractions on the island, including:

  • Empire State Building
  • Statue of Liberty
  • Times Square

Queens is the geographically largest borough and the most ethnically diverse county in the United States. Home to both of the major New York City airports (LaGuardia and JFK International), Queens is located on Long Island directly south of the Bronx and north of Brooklyn. It’s home to the New York Mets baseball team, Rockaway Beach (made famous by the Ramones) and the U.S. Open. Other famous Queens attractions include:

  • Flushing Meadows Corona Park
  • Museum of the Moving Image
  • New York Hall of Science
  • Astoria Park

Staten Island is the farthest southwestern borough, known for its expansive green space and museums. Since the subway system isn’t connected to Staten Island, you can only access the area via bridges from Brooklyn or New Jersey or a ferry. However, once you’re there, you can take buses or the island’s own subway system. Staten Island doesn’t have as many attractions as the other boroughs, but you might consider adding the following attractions to your New York itinerary:

  • Staten Island Ferry
  • Staten Island Greenbelt
  • Staten Island Children’s Museum
  • Fort Wadsworth
  • National Lighthouse Museum

Getting around New York City can be overwhelming for tourists, but fortunately the city is laid out in a distinct grid pattern. Once you master the grid, you can pretty much get anywhere, especially with New York’s expansive public transportation system.

No matter where you go in New York, traffic is a problem, so avoid traveling on the road if you can. If you plan on riding public transportation, download the MYmta app for the latest delays, schedules and maps.

Walking is a great way to get around New York City, especially in Manhattan. The other boroughs aren’t as walkable since points of interest are more spread out.

The New York Subway should be your main form of travel during your stay, especially if you’re moving between boroughs. The system operates 24/7/365 and can get you to most points of interest in the city (except to Staten Island from any of the other boroughs). You’ll need a MetroCard, which you can purchase at any station. Each ride is $2.75.

Buses also cost $2.75 per ride and you can pay with your MetroCard. Most buses run 24 hours a day, but check the schedule to ensure the bus you need runs at night. The buses are normally on time, but New York City traffic means they may be delayed. In some areas, walking may actually be the faster option.

Ferries aren’t just in Seattle — New York has several that move between boroughs. The most popular is the Staten Island Ferry, which is free and a great way to get photos of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Each ferry ride is $2.75.

Rideshares and taxis are also popular in New York City, especially to get to places the subway can’t. However, they are often slower than other forms of transportation since you’re likely to get caught in traffic. They’re also the most expensive transportation option, with most taxis charging a minimum of $3.90 plus $3 per mile and a 15 to 20 percent tip.

Bikes are a fun way to explore parks and residential areas in New York. (Riding a bike in Times Square is possible, but it can be dangerous if you aren’t used to heavy traffic.) You can rent a bike through the Citi Bike system and get a 30-minute rental for $3.50 or 24 hours for $15.

Car rentals are not suggested due to heavy traffic congestion, sometimes narrow streets and New York’s famously intense drivers. Plus, public transportation will be cheaper and faster. However, if you plan on leaving the city limits , you can rent a car for about $45 per day.

Traveling to New York City can be overwhelming, especially for people not used to the city’s fast-paced lifestyle and crowds. Here are a few tips for a successful trip.

What To Pack for New York

Your packing list for New York should depend on the season, your purpose for visiting and the length of your stay. Many hotels have laundry services, especially in Manhattan, and laundromats are common, so you can pack less clothing and do laundry to save room in your suitcase.

In addition to general clothing (undergarments, pants, shirts), bring the following clothing items:

  • Layers (especially in the spring and fall when daily temperatures can vary greatly)
  • Appropriate attire for attractions (for example, you’ll need a dressy outfit for a Broadway show or a semi-formal dinner)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Outwear (in the winter)

You’ll also want to pack:

  • Chargers for all your devices
  • Backpack or other bag to carry souvenirs and other travel stuff
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Printed copies of your reservations, tickets, etc.
  • Your travel itinerary
  • Extra cash for tipping (small denominations like $1s and $5s)

Best Photo Spots in NYC

New York has one of the most iconic skylines in the world, gorgeous historical and modern architecture and stunning parks, so make sure you have your camera handy. As you take photos, be mindful of your surroundings to avoid obstructing traffic or pedestrian walkways.

The following spots offer the best views in New York:

  • Taste of NYC Helicopter Tour

For stunning architecture photos, check out:

  • Grand Central Terminal
  • Flatiron Building

For stunning nature photos, pull out your camera at:

  • Central Park (specifically Gapstow Bridge, Sheep Meadow and Wollman Rink)
  • Pebble Beach

Other iconic photo spots in New York include:

  • Radio City Music Hall
  • New York City Public Library

Best Time To Visit NYC

The best time to visit New York depends on your travel priorities.

If you want the best weather, aim to visit between May and June or September through November.

January through February is the best time to visit New York to save money or avoid crowds. After the holidays and during the winter months, fewer tourists venture to New York City, so hotels, restaurants and attractions like Broadway are more likely to run deals.

When traveling with kids or as a family, the summer is the best time to visit. The kids won’t miss school, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep them entertained. But be prepared — June through August is peak tourist season in New York, so you will likely be fighting crowds.

How To Save Money in NYC

New York City’s high cost of living makes it an expensive place to travel, but there are ways to save money on your trip.

  • Go during the off-season. Since travel drops in January and February, you’ll be able to find deals on hotels, restaurants and attractions.
  • Use public transportation. The cheapest way to get around town is on public transit. Stick to the subway, buses and ferries whenever possible.
  • Stay in Queens or Brooklyn rather than Manhattan. Manhattan is the center of New York City, so you’ll pay more for the convenience of being close to all the main attractions.
  • Spend time at parks. Despite being a sprawling metropolis, New York has 1,700 parks , many of which are free and offer exciting events all year.
  • Take advantage of free admission to museums. Check the museum’s website to see when they offer free admission. For example, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum has free admission on Mondays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Be sure to get reservations for the free admission times since they tend to sell out quickly.
  • Get a New York CityPASS. The New York CityPASS can save you up to 40 percent at attractions that are already on your itinerary, and the pass is valid for nine days.
  • Skip the souvenirs. Sure, the foam Statue of Liberty crown is iconic, but it won’t make or break your trip. It’s easy to go overboard with the NYC merch, so limit yourself to one or two items and leave the rest. Spend your savings on experiences, which you’re more likely to remember anyway.
  • Shop at outlet or vintage stores. New York City is home to some of the best shopping in the entire world, especially on Fifth Avenue. But New York is known for more than just luxury shopping — the city also has plenty of eclectic outlets and vintage stores to explore.
  • Skip the fancy restaurants for food trucks and street carts. While it’s nice to experience the high life while on vacation, limit yourself to one or two sit-down restaurants during your stay. New York’s expansive network of food trucks and street carts offer New York City classics that rival the most expensive restaurants.

NYC Safety Tips

New York City has become one of the safest cities in America , especially in areas tourists frequent. But that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down completely, since tourists make prime targets for pickpockets.

Follow the safety tips below for a safe and enjoyable trip to New York City:

  • Don’t leave your bags unattended at any time, and drop them off at the hotel immediately. If you arrive early in the day, don’t lug your bags around town with you. Head to your hotel and ask the front desk to store them until you can check in.
  • Only get in marked taxis. Look for a light with a medallion number on the taxi’s roof and an official ID number on the hood.
  • Stick to the main streets when walking and don’t cut through parks at night. As long as you are walking somewhere well lit with lots of people, you should be safe. Avoid taking shortcuts through alleys and parks, especially at night, and pay attention to which neighborhoods empty out at night, like the Financial District.
  • Only buy MetroCards from approved vendors. People may claim to sell discounted MetroCards, similar to scalping tickets to professional sporting events. Never buy from them, since you can’t verify the amount on the card.
  • When taking the subway at night, ride in the conductor's car or cars with other people. The conductor’s car is usually in the middle of the train and will be marked.
  • Keep wallets and purses close to you. Pickpockets congregate in heavily touristy areas, especially where street performances occur. Wear a cross-body bag and use a travel money belt instead of your wallet. Avoid carrying all your cash with you — leave it in the safe in your hotel room.
  • Be careful crossing the street. New York drivers are known for being impatient, so when the crosswalk says you can cross, wait a beat just to be safe.
  • Try to look like a local. Nothing labels you as a tourist faster than wearing a camera around your neck with an “I heart NY” T-shirt and a foam Statue of Liberty crown. Instead, wear regular clothes and keep the souvenirs to a minimum.
  • Research where you’re going before you go. Since most of New York is laid out as a grid, it’s relatively easy to get around. Before you leave for your destination, look up directions for how to get there to avoid holding a map or using your phone’s GPS while you walk.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to what’s happening around you. Avoid walking with your earbuds in so you can hear traffic and pedestrians. Many pickpockets work as a team, so be especially wary whenever there’s a disturbance. If at any time you don’t feel safe, remove yourself from the situation.

Cruise ship drags dead whale into New York, prompting investigation

The collision with the 44-foot-long, endangered sei whale could have been avoided, experts said.

travel 365 new york

A cruise ship arrived in New York Harbor with a dead sei whale pinned to its bow, a revelation that has spawned a federal investigation and has led biologists to examine the whale’s carcass to determine the cause of death.

The MSC Meraviglia was returning Saturday from a Bermuda cruise when it sailed into the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal with the 44-foot-long sei whale affixed to its front. MSC, a Geneva-based cruise line, confirmed the incident “with deep regret” in a statement and said it had immediately notified authorities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement is investigating.

On Wednesday, the whale was towed to Sandy Hook, N.J., for a necropsy. According to NOAA, officials discovered broken bones in the right flipper, tissue trauma in the right shoulder blade region and a belly full of food. Biologists took samples for biotoxin and histopathologic analyses. NOAA spokeswoman Andrea Gomez said the tissue and bone samples can help biologists determine whether the whale died before the collision with the ship or because of it.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society is leading the whale examination. Results from the exam could take days to weeks, said Kathleen Collins, senior marine campaign manager with the International Fund for Animal Welfare .

Based on the findings released so far, Andy Rogan, science manager at Ocean Alliance , a whale research and conservation nonprofit, said the cruise ship probably caused the whale’s demise. If so, it would have been a sudden death.

“Whales are huge animals, but compared to a ship that size, it’s still a massive impact. So much weight and power is hitting that whale,” he said. “It’s almost certain that a ship strike killed that whale.”

According to NOAA, vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear are the biggest threats to sei whales, an endangered species that inhabits deeper waters off the coastline. Population figures are elusive, but NOAA documented roughly 6,300 sei whales between Florida and Nova Scotia from 2010 to 2013.

Sei whales are feeding during this time of year, and Collins said the whales eat on the surface, placing them in the potential bull’s eye for collisions with a ship’s bow. She said crew members and passengers might not have felt the bump because of the ship’s size. The MSC Meraviglia weighs 171,598 tons; sei whales weigh up to 50 tons.

“It really is a tragic case where this strike likely happened and everyone was oblivious until they came into port,” Collins said. “They likely don’t even know exactly where they struck the whale, either.”

NOAA urges boaters operating along the East Coast to cruise slowly, stay alert and report any sightings of right whales or dead, injured or entangled whales. In its statement, MSC said it follows comprehensive measures to avoid accidents with marine life, such as training deck officers with the Ocean Research & Conservation Association and adjusting itineraries in regions populated by whales.

Collins said voluntarily reducing vessel speeds can help avoid run-ins. However, she said, cruise ships and large tankers prefer to move briskly because they are on tight schedules.

The Cruise Lines International Association did not respond to a request for comment on the industry’s safety protocols.

“The chance of mortality with a vessel strike goes down pretty substantially as you reduce the vessel speed,” Collins said.

Spotters on deck also would help a cruise ship avoid a whale, she said. Such crew members are trained to look specifically for whales in key locations. Marine outlets, agencies such as the Coast Guard and the Whale Alert app share information about whale sightings and locations.

Rogan said there is no “silver bullet” for ships to avoid whales, but advances in technology can help lower the threat as well. He said hydrophones can pick up whale acoustics, information that NOAA could then disseminate to vessels. At a recent workshop, Rogan said, he learned about infrared cameras that can detect whales within a 360-degree range, particularly in front of a vessel.

Rogan urged the public Thursday to share its outrage about the incident with government agencies and with the cruise line. Collins said she hoped the incident would inspire the cruise industry to act as a better steward in the waters it shares with vulnerable marine life.

The MSC Meraviglia, she noted, is headed next to Canada, a critical ground for North Atlantic right whales, including mothers and their newborn calves.

Living at sea: Travelers on a 9-month world cruise are going viral on social media. For some travelers, not even nine months was enough time on a ship; they sold cars, moved out of their homes and prepared to set sail for three years . That plan fell apart, but a 3.5-year version is waiting in the wings.

Passengers beware: It’s not all buffets and dance contests. Crime data reported by cruise lines show that the number of sex crimes has increased compared to previous years. And though man-overboard cases are rare, they are usually deadly .

The more you know: If you’re cruise-curious, here are six tips from a newcomer. Remember that in most cases, extra fees and add-ons will increase the seemingly cheap price of a sailing. And if you happen to get sick , know what to expect on board.

Virgin Voyages' new ship Brilliant Lady will sail from this major US city in 2025

travel 365 new york

Virgin Voyages’ new ship is on its way.

The adults-only cruise line announced its fourth vessel, Brilliant Lady, will begin sailing in September 2025 from New York.

“The world has been waiting for us to announce Brilliant Lady’s debut, and she’s almost here,” the line’s CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said in a news release. “At Virgin Voyages, we’re constantly innovating and looking for opportunities to provide even better value for our Sailors with greater choice. Virgin fans have been asking for years if we’d consider sailing from places like New York, Los Angeles or Alaska, so it's wonderful to give our Sailors and First Mates what they wanted: fresh itineraries spanning North America from 5-14 nights in length with new experiences that they will remember forever.”

Brilliant Lady was previously set to start service in the Caribbean late last year, but the line delayed its launch due to “unexpected construction, supply chain and staffing challenges that have delayed the introduction,” the line said in September.

The ship will launch from New York instead and spend its inaugural season on a North American tour, sailing from the Big Apple, Miami, Los Angeles and Seattle, completing a Panama Canal crossing in the process. While similar to Virgin’s previous vessels, the ship will have an adapted frame and is crafted for transiting the canal and navigating waters like those in Alaska.

Can I take a wheelchair on a cruise? How guests with mobility devices can travel smoothly

Travelers can submit deposits for priority booking on Alaska voyages beginning May 8. “Sailors previously slated to sail on Brilliant Lady will be given priority access to book a MerMaiden voyage,” the line added in the release.

Virgin will also offer a multi-cruise Brilliant 4 You Pass, following the launch of season passes on its Scarlet Lady and Resilient Lady ships earlier this year.

Cruise ship sails into New York City port with 44-foot dead whale across its bow

  • Copy Link copied

NEW YORK (AP) — A cruise ship sailed into a New York City port with a 44-foot (13-meter) dead whale across its bow, marine authorities said.

The whale, identified as an endangered sei whale, was caught on the ship’s bow when it arrived at the Port of Brooklyn on Saturday, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez said.

A spokesperson for MSC Cruises said the whale was on the MSC Meraviglia, which docked at Brooklyn before sailing to ports in New England and Canada.

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” officials with the cruise line said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life,” the officials said, adding that the Geneva-based MSC Cruises follows all regulations designed to protect whales, such as altering itineraries in certain regions to avoid hitting the animals.

The dead whale was relocated to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and towed to shore there to allow for better access to equipment and to conduct a necropsy, Gomez said.

The necropsy, an autopsy on an animal, was conducted on Tuesday, Gomez said. Samples collected from the whale will help biologists determine whether it was already dead when it was struck by the ship, she said.

Sei whales are typically observed in deeper waters far from the coastline, Gomez said. They are one of the largest whale species and are internationally protected.

Artificially Intelligent Help for Planning Your Summer Vacation

Travel-focused A.I. bots and more eco-friendly transportation options in online maps and search tools can help you quickly organize your seasonal getaway.

  • Share full article

The home page for the Layla travel-planning site, which shows a photo of a woman next to the word “LAYLA” in big type, above a search box showing the query “I need a beach vacation without sharks or tourists.”

By J. D. Biersdorfer

J.D. Biersdorfer has been using smartphone apps for travel since the summer of 2007.

The summer travel season starts in just a few weeks, but if you are looking for software that goes beyond simply booking flights and hotels, you’re in luck. Search engines enhanced by artificial intelligence can help with your research and outline full itineraries. Certain older apps have recently been updated to suggest more eco-friendly travel options. And keeping it all organized on your phone is easier than ever. Here’s an overview.

Using an A.I. Travel Agent

General-purpose A.I.-powered search tools and chatbots like Google’s Gemini spin up a list of things to do on your vacation when asked, but A.I. bots that are fine-tuned for travel queries are often more comprehensive. These bots scout destinations, plan itineraries, search for accommodations and flights, map out road trips and do more — grabbing a lot of information at once and saving you all that time-consuming web trawling.

Give the software your specifics — like destination, length of stay, interests — and see what it suggests. Many A.I. helpers are free to use if you sign up for an account, but some charge a subscription fee for premium services; your app store has specifics.

Layla , formerly Roam Around, is one of the free vacation-oriented A.I. helpers you can find online, and it has teamed up with travel sites that include Skyscanner , Get Your Guide and Booking.com . If you prefer land-based car and camper journeys, Roadtrippers (free trial; $60 year) includes real-time traffic and air-quality information along with route planning. And old stalwarts like Tripadvisor and Expedia are now using A.I.-generated vacation builders.

But as others have also noted, while A.I. travel planners have much potential, many are still works in progress and usually display disclaimers admitting so.

A.I. bots have been known to offer generic advice like “enjoy lunch at a local restaurant,” suggest activities that are out of season or too far apart, repeatedly recommend the same restaurant, consistently steer you to their advertisers or point you to locations that have closed. If you ask different bots the same question, you may get nearly identical suggestions, all scraped from the same tourism websites.

Still, A.I. travel apps are improving as they learn, and can be useful for the trip research and coordination phase. Just be sure to double-check the bot’s work before you commit to a plan.

Finding Earth-Friendly Options

There’s no shortage of apps for booking transportation to your destination. But if you want to keep the environment in mind, recent updates to Google’s Maps and Search apps now suggest routes and methods that lower your personal impact on the planet.

Google for the past few years has been pointing people to flights with lower carbon emissions , alternative train routes , fuel-efficient driving directions and eco-friendly hotels . It is now expanding its walking, biking and public transit suggestions alongside car routes in several major cities and adding more electric-vehicle charging information. Google Flights shows jet emissions estimates . Google Search has a “consider taking the train” nudge with rail routes and prices under certain flight results.

Apple’s Maps app also shows mass transit , walking and cycling options for getting around town, along with charge-friendly routes for electric vehicles . However, the default apps on your phone are not the only aids. Third-party software for directions and sustainable travel abound.

For example, Citymapper, which covers most major cities in the United States, Europe and Asia, includes environmental impact statistics on some trips. Its directions often include accessibility options that avoid stairways , along with routes for the fastest, cheapest or easiest way to get where you’re going; Citymapper is free with in-app purchases.

Other apps available for those seeking environmentally minded vacations include Bikemap for community-sourced cycling routes around the world, HappyCow for vegan and vegetarian travelers and Tap Hydration and Water Stations to locate sources for refilling reusable water bottles.

Keeping Organized

If you don’t already have software for consolidating your trip information, your phone’s default apps can help. Electronic boarding passes, hotel reservations and advance tickets can be quickly added to the digital wallet on your phone; a pragmatic paper backup tucked in your bag is insurance. Google and Apple offer to automatically add reservations and events from email and messages to your calendar .

Free services like TripIt (and its phone apps ), TripCase (also with Android or iOS apps) and Wanderlog automatically put all your travel information in one place, typically by scanning the information in your confirmation emails. TripIt Pro , a $50-a-year subscription version, adds more features like seat, fare and airline-points trackers, as well as international travel tools and regional risk alerts like those for extreme weather that can affect airline schedules and public safety .

A.I. bots and travel apps will continue to evolve and, hopefully, make vacation planning even easier in the future. Just don’t forget to occasionally put the phone down and enjoy your time off once you get there.

The Age of A.I.

A new category of apps promises to relieve parents of drudgery, with an assist from A.I.  But a family’s grunt work is more human, and valuable, than it seems.

Can't say enough good things... would higly recommend!"
