For those unfamiliar with Kansas City, the mention of its name doesn’t quite conjure up clear images of what to expect like New Orleans or Miami does. And a conversation about Kansas City typically starts with the question, “What state is that in? Kansas? Or Missouri?” For the record, we’re talking about Kansas City, Missouri. And if you don’t have a picture of the city, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. Spanish-inspired architecture, more than 200 fountains (in fact, Kansas City is known as the City of Fountains   ), lush gardens and parks, and world-class dining, are spread across distinctive neighborhoods that make up Kansas City's diverse landscape.

This comprehensive guide will help you plan your visit to the “Paris of the Plains.” 

Planning Your Trip 

Best Time to Visit: Thanks to the many parks and outdoor attractions in Kansas City, the best time to visit is in the warmer months. Summer, in particular, is a fun time due to live music and festivals like Boulevardia . Or head there during the holidays for ice skating at Crown Center and the annual Plaza Lighting on Country Club Plaza   , which has been a tradition for nearly 100 years.

Getting Around: Kansas City has reliable public transportation , and the RideKC app or website makes it easy to plan your routes and purchase your fares. Downtown, the Kansas City Streetcar is free to ride, and the route is two miles long, running from Crown Center to River Market . Or consider renting a car or use ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft.

Travel Tip: The beauty of Kansas City lies within its neighborhoods, each with their own distinct architecture and character. When planning, try to pick attractions and activities in as many different ones as possible in order to get a feel for the city.

Things to Do

Kansas City is closely associated with jazz and barbecue , but the city doesn’t box itself into being known for just one thing. Home to rich history, beautiful parks, fine art, and popular sports teams, the city has grown remarkably over the past several years. Whether you’re traveling solo or with your family, there is no shortage of things to do in Kansas City .

Music: Kansas City might historically be known for jazz, but you can find live music in almost every neighborhood from indoor venues to outdoor amphitheaters in every genre. See a musical at Starlight Theater, watch a production of a Shakespeare play in Southmoreland Park, or get a bite to eat while watching a show at Crossroads KC.

Art: The Nelson-Atkins Museum and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art house some of the finest art in the world with frequently rotating exhibits. Best of all, they’re free year-round.

History: Learn more about World War I, fashion, jazz, and baseball at the National World War I Museum and Memorial , Kansas City Garment District Museum , American Jazz Museum , and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum . 

Sports: Watch a game at Truman Sports Complex, home to Kansas City’s baseball and football teams, the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs (the two stadiums are located adjacent to one another). Or cheer on soccer team Sporting Kansas City, which plays at Children’s Mercy Park in nearby Kansas City, Kansas. For basketball, visit the recently-revived HyVee Arena in the West Bottoms, where minor league team The Kansas City Tornadoes plays. In the spring, the NCAA Big 12 Tournament teams compete in Sprint Center downtown.

What to Eat and Drink

Kansas City’s food and dining scene can be summarized in three distinct categories; barbecue, spirits, and craft beer. There are a lot of opinions on which restaurants make the best barbecue but the most well-known are Gates BBQ , Arthur Bryant’s , Joe’s KC , and Jack Stack , all of which have been established for decades. But beyond barbecue, Kansas City’s dining scene is more diverse than one might expect with German, Scandinavian, Ethiopian, Spanish, Thai, and Caribbean restaurants throughout the metro area.

When it comes to drinks, Kansas City has a rich prohibition history, due to the fact that the city essentially ignored the 18th amendment and continued to operate speakeasies and produce alcohol during the 1940s   . Tom’s Town Distilling Company named for prohibition-era political boss Tom Pendergast, and J. Rieger & Co. which was founded in 1887 and revived in 2014, both distill vodka, gin, whiskey, and bourbon. Tom’s Town and J. Rieger spirits are used on a majority of craft cocktail menus at restaurants and bars in the area.

Craft beer is also a huge part of Kansas City’s alcohol landscape, with breweries of all sizes throughout the city. The centerpiece of craft brewing is Boulevard Brewing Company , which was established in the 1980s, and its beer is available in cities across the United States.

Where to Stay

The best places to stay in Kansas City are downtown, on Country Club Plaza, or in the Crossroads Arts District. The largest concentration of hotels are downtown and on Country Club Plaza, however, including well-known chains and historic boutique hotels. In the Crossroads Arts District, art-centric hotels with built-in galleries and frequent exhibits are popular. For those looking for a more homey stay, Airbnb is also a good option where frequent listings include artsy lofts and condominiums in various neighborhoods. Getting There

The best way to get to Kansas City is by flying directly into the Kansas City International Airport (MCI). Culture and Customs

Though you’re sure to find certain places that stay open after 1 a.m. like a nightclub or bar, Kansas City has a tendency to turn in early with a great majority of restaurants, bars, and nightlife closing around midnight. It is also important to know that many businesses including spas, salons, clothing stores and some restaurants are open through the weekend but are regularly closed on Mondays. If there is a particular place you’re interested in going be sure to check the hours ahead of your trip.

If you’re unsure of something, you can feel comfortable asking a passerby. Locals are notoriously friendly and willing to help point you in the right direction.

• Many of Kansas City’s museums have no admission fees.

This was my first trip to Kansas City, also known as the City of Fountains, where I had three days to explore the city.

I discovered an exciting city full of culture, food, history, and art. The city’s barbecue joints are legendary, each with its secret sauce and smoking techniques. Kansas City’s heritage is deeply rooted in music, with a pivotal role in the evolution of jazz.

Kansas City’s downtown area has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years and you’ll find chic hotels and award-winning restaurants. The Power & Light District, with its buzzing nightlife and dining options, has become a total hot spot. For art enthusiasts, there are extensive collections of both contemporary and historic art.

These are just a few of the things to enjoy while visiting Kansas City. And if you’re considering visiting — do. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how this city shines. Here are the best things to do in Kansas City, the essential experiences for a memorable trip.

When it comes to picking where to stay in Kansas City, don’t look past the chic Hotel Kansas City . It’s part of the Unbound Collection by Hyatt, and one of my favorite Hyatt stays yet. It’s design-forward, moody, and tips its hat to Kansas City’s rich history. Established as a social club in 1882, Hotel Kansas City has been transformed into a luxurious retreat for travelers. And beyond its intentional design and charm, you’re set in one of the best locations to explore. Book the best rates here .

2. Try Local BBQ at Jack Stack Barbecue

After asking a few locals about where to get barbecue, it became quite clear that everyone had a favorite. But the one that kept coming up was the local Jack Stack Barbecue . If I may suggest, come in very hungry and order one of their share platters. KC BBQ is a must-try food while visiting Kansas City, so the more the merrier.

3. Explore the Museums

One of the most surprising parts of my visit to Kansas City was the sheer number of museums to visit. I learned later on that it’s a major destination for artists and art enthusiasts. Some of the museums are even free to enter like the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the iconic Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art . There are several other museums to visit as well like the National World War I Museum and Memorial , the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum , and the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures .

4. Enjoy the Historic Union Station

Kansas City’s iconic Union Station is a grand architectural masterpiece that once was a bustling railway hub. Today, it stands as a world-class historical landmark and cultural center, housing fascinating museums, interactive exhibits, and a majestic Grand Hall that transports visitors back in time to the golden age of train travel. It’s well worth visiting, even for a stroll through to take in the architecture.

5. Dine Supper Club Style at Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room

Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room is a restaurant that combines innovative cuisine with a sophisticated dining experience. With its inventive tasting menus and craft cocktails, its head chef was named a James Beard Foundation Best Chef, Midwest 2023 Semifinalist. The restaurant was also listed as one of Food & Wine Magazine’s Most Exciting Restaurant Openings. The inside is chic and moody, and each plate is artistically presented. *Reservations recommended

6. Sip Local Spirits at a Distillery

Kansas City is becoming a hub for craft distilleries, offering unique spirits and tasting experiences. Among the best distilleries in the area, Tom’s Town Distilling Co. is worth a visit. Named after the city’s infamous political boss, Tom Pendergast, this distillery crafts award-winning spirits, including bourbon and gin, all while immersing visitors in the history of the Prohibition era. Another gem is J. Rieger & Co. , a revival of a pre-prohibition distillery that has been resurrected to produce exceptional whiskey, gin, and other spirits. J. Rieger has a full restaurant, and don’t forget to slide down their slide!

7. Explore the West Bottoms Neighborhood

One of my favorite experiences in Kansas City was strolling the industrial West Bottoms neighborhood. Once an industrial heartland, the West Bottoms was home to warehouses, stockyards, and factories that played a pivotal role in the city’s growth during the 19th and 20th centuries. The district is now a haven for artists and creatives, with converted warehouses and industrial spaces serving as galleries and studios. It’s also home to several antique shops (mostly open weekends only), a handful of eateries, and local shops.

8. Enjoy the River Market and Shop the City Market

Wander through the bustling City Market in River Market, one of the largest farmers’ markets in the Midwest, where you can sample fresh local foods and dine at a number of restaurants. I went for a stroll along the market stalls and ended up sitting down to one of the best meals of the trip. Habashi House is a Middle Eastern restaurant, and their gyros were phenomenal. Afterward, go next door to shop for their spices and other delicacies.

9. Have a Nightcap at Nighthawk

Downstairs in the basement of Hotel Kansas City is one of those ideal spots to end the day. A full cocktail menu, live music, and all that you need to end an adventure in Kansas City.

10. Shop and Stroll at Country Club Plaza

Often referred to simply as “ The Plaza ,” this iconic district in Kansas City is a blend of Spanish-inspired architecture, upscale shopping, and a popular dining scene. Designed in the 1920s as the nation’s first suburban shopping district, it is now the place to go to shop and eat out.

11. Have Breakfast at Messenger Coffee + Ibis Bakery

One of my favorite spots for breakfast out in Kansas City was Messenger Coffee + Ibis Bakery . It’s a three-story cafe with several nooks to get cozy in and even a rooftop with an outdoor fire pit. The food and coffee here were amazing. I loved their avocado toast and seasonal latte.

12. Do a Factory Tour at The Roasterie Coffee Company

If you want to dive more into the process of sourcing, roasting, and brewing artisanal coffee, head to The Roasterie Coffee Company Factory . This location offers a chance to do an informative tour that shares the entire process of making coffee. I loved learning more about this and getting a better understanding of what goes into making a bag of coffee. Afterward, be sure to enjoy a fresh cup in their cafe!

13. Spot the City’s Murals

Kansas City’s vibrant art scene extends well beyond its galleries and museums — there are murals everywhere to enjoy in the city. One of the most renowned mural collections in Kansas City is the “Kansas City Masterpiece,” a series of murals created by local artists that depict the city’s history and spirit. You can find these colorful works of art on buildings throughout the Crossroads Arts District . The West Bottoms area of Kansas City is another hotspot for murals.

14. Catch a Free Show at The Blue Room Jazz Club

In the historic 18th and Vine Jazz District of Kansas City, The Blue Room Jazz Club is a cherished institution that pays homage to the city’s rich jazz heritage. You don’t want to miss the free Thursday shows at noon, where artists perform live jazz during their “Jam Sessions.” It’s well worth making the time to catch a show, and don’t forget the American Jazz Museum just next door. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about jazz and its roots.

15. Dine at The Stilwell for Amazing Local Cuisine

If you’re looking for one of the best meals in town, head to the Loews Kansas City Hotel for their restaurant, The Stilwell . The downtown views of Kansas City are wonderful (time your visit with sunset!), and the open restaurant looks into the kitchen. The food here is American, yet elevated, with homage to Kansas City classics. I’d recommend booking a table here!

Why Go To Kansas City

Kansas City is a friendly place, filled with salt-of-the-earth Midwesterners who smile at strangers as they pass them on the streets. But KC is also cool: The Power & Light District brims with trendy bars and restaurants and equally trendy 20- and 30-somethings. The city's cultural, too, with some surprisingly great museums like the Nelson-Atkins . Plus, the city's history – as a trading post in 1821 and an important stopover on the Oregon Trail in the early 1800s – gives it an interesting narrative. You can view parts of this history at the National World War I and Arabia Steamboat museums. The city's jazz and barbecue are just about unparalleled, but Kansas City has also successfully delved into other types of music and food (more on that in the dining section). And just so you won't be confused, Kansas City straddles both the Show-Me State of Missouri and the Sunflower State of Kansas. If you're a tourist, you'll probably be spending most of your time on the Missouri side since that's where most of the city's top attractions can be found.

• Barbecue rules Kansas City's signature barbecue style is a slow-smoked, dry-rubbed meat and its sauces are typically tomato- or molasses-based with tangy, spicy and sweet flavor notes. You've got to sample some signature KC barbecue when you're in town.
• Bring comfy shoes The Power & Light District, Westport and Country Club Plaza areas of the city were made for walking. Pencil in some time to stroll around and enjoy the outdoors.
• Keep an eye on the weather Kansas City sees everything from extreme heat to tornadoes to vicious thunderstorms. Check the weather before your trip and plan accordingly.

How to Save Money in Kansas City

• Trade four wheels for two Kansas City offers a bike-share program, B-cycle, which is a good option for getting around to see the top attractions and exploring the neighborhoods. The first 30 minutes of usage are free, then it's $2 per half hour after. Multiday options are also available.
• Collect coupons The city's tourism board website offers coupons with deals on everything from hotel stays to family-friendly attractions. Local blog Kansas City on the Cheap is another great resource to check for discounts and deals on activities, meals and more.
• Find free things to do Many of Kansas City's popular attractions are free. Wander around Westport, check out interesting outdoor art or hop on a free brewery tour.

What to Eat

Kansas City is home to some tasty cuisine, including its signature barbecue. In Kansas City, expect everything and anything to be barbecued: basically, no meat is off-limits (chicken, pork, ribs, beef brisket, ham, turkey, sausage and so on). Typically, the meat gets a spice rub treatment and then is slow-roasted over aromatic wood like hickory. Sauces vary by establishment but are usually thick, sweet, spicy and tangy all at the same time. Kansas City natives and travelers say some of the best spots to go are Danny Edwards Boulevard BBQ , Arthur Bryant's Barbeque , Jack Stack Barbecue and Char Bar .

Once you tire of finger lickin' good barbecue, head to one of KC's casual eateries or upscale dining options. The Farmhouse and Providence New American Kitchen receive praise for their affordable prices and farm-to-table fare while Novel and Bluestem restaurants earn rounds of applause for their decadent multicourse prix-fixe meals.

And don't forget about beverages. Kansas City boasts a growing craft beer scene and its hometown brewery, Boulevard Brewing Company, is one of the top brewpub operations in the Midwest . Locals say you should sample the "Thundercloud" – its version of a black and tan with the brewery's dry stout and wheat beers. Julep Cocktail Club , Ca Va and Green Lady Lounge are also lauded for their drink options and sophisticated atmospheres, plus Green Lady is a jazz bar with live performances nightly.

Kansas City's National World War I Museum sits at the feet of the Liberty Memorial , an impressive Egyptian Revival-style monument erected in 1928 in honor of the men and women who served and died in the war. The collections and exhibits present a rounded view of the war's global impact, including exhibits like a re-creation of the crater left behind after a French farmhouse is struck by a howitzer shell. Visitors can walk through the crater and can also experience what it looked and sounded like inside the trenches with six reproduced scenes.

Other exhibits share compelling stories from those who experienced the war, both on the front lines and at home. Other items on display include a Renault FT-17 tank with damage from a German shell, weapons, uniforms, and personal objects that soldiers brought into battle. In total, the collection is one of the world's largest, with more than 75,000 items.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has impressive collections, which represent North American, European, Asian, and African cultures. The antiquities collection includes Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern pieces from as far back as the 2nd millennium BC, including its newest Egyptian addition, the ornate inner coffin of Meret-it-es.

The collection of African art represents 2,500 years of craftsmanship, containing more than 400 works in a wide variety of media from wood to ivory. Native American artifacts include basket work, pottery, and ornate quill and beadwork. The museum's European art collection spans from medieval times through the 1800s, with emphasis on 19th-century Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings and 17th-century Italian Baroque art.

Additional galleries focus on Chinese, Japanese, and American art, and there are other exhibits dedicated to both contemporary and modern art. One does not need to be an art enthusiast to appreciate the lovely grounds and the sculpture park, where it's possible to go for a walk, play some sports, enjoy a picnic, or take a guided audio tour.

Located within Kansas City's Crown Center, LEGOLAND is one of the city's top family attractions for the young and young-at-heart. Here, you will find a complete replica of the city, built with more than 1.5 million LEGO bricks.

The models include all the city's major landmarks like Arrowhead Stadium, Union Station, Country Club Plaza, the World War I Memorial, and even the Crown Center. Aspiring builders of all ages are also able to talk to master builders and attend workshops for all skill and age levels, and kids can catch photo-ops with their favorite LEGO characters.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of shows throughout the day at the 4D Cinema where a full sensory experience accompanies each show. There are also interactive rides, including Kingdom Quest where riders "zap" the scoundrels who have captured the princess, the Merlin's Apprentice ride where kids take flight, and a virtual reality experience that races through the world. Kids who need to burn off energy will love the Ninjago "training camp," a laser maze with lots of physical challenges.

On September 5, 1856, a steamboat carrying 400,000 pounds of supplies destined for general stores in the Midwest sank in the Missouri River, just six miles before reaching Kansas City. The Arabia was lost for more than 130 years before an amateur archaeologist discovered it buried 45 feet beneath a cornfield.

As erosion caused the course of the great river to change, the boat's remains and cargo were encased in soil and preserved as if in a giant time capsule. The result is a massive collection of pre-Civil War artifacts, all examples of the objects and food that were part of daily life for the pioneers. The number of artifacts found was so great, in fact, that museum staff continue to clean the objects today.

Museum visitors can watch this process, and items are continuously being added to the exhibits as they are restored. Collections include a wide range of everyday items, like toys, tools, cookware, and even China sets. The museum also has exhibits about the glory days of steamboats on the Mighty Missouri, a river which claimed hundreds of steamboats beneath its waters.

The Kansas City Zoo has become one of the area's top family attractions thanks to major renovations and improvements in recent years. It is filled with wildlife representing over 200 species from all over the world, with a great deal of attention focused on each animal's habitat and quality of life.

Among its 1,700-plus residents are African elephants; rhinos; leopards; giraffes; wallabies; and several species of primate, including Bornean orangutans, blue monkeys, chimpanzees, and more. The zoo is also home to ocean-dwellers, including part-time swimmers like penguins and sea lions, as well as jellyfish, stingrays, and other aquatic life.

One of the zoo's most popular exhibits is the Helzberg Penguin Plaza, an impressive living space formed out of ice and stone that closely resembles their native habitat. Visitors can watch the lively birds slide, swim, and play on the ice, in the water, and in fresh snow that falls from the sky of their habitat. Savvy spectators can also spot eight camouflaged nesting boxes within the rocks where the residents raise their young.

The Kansas City Zoo has also invested a great deal into its primate habitats, and continues to add to the facilities to enrich the lives of their residents. "Orangutan University" is a newer space that provides the orangutans with exercise and educational opportunities. In addition to giving visitors the opportunity to watch them play and learn, specialized computers allow interaction between the primates and their human relatives.

Other top exhibits include a 1,300-gallon jellyfish tank and Stingray Bay, a 20,000-gallon touch-tank home to southern and cownose stingrays, as well as whitespotted bamboo sharks. The zoo also offers special animal encounters with Aldabra tortoises, giraffes, camels, penguins, and rhinos.

Science City, located in Union Station , is a top attraction for families visiting Kansas City. Exhibits focus on various aspects of science and are all interactive, so that visitors can learn through hands-on experience.

One of its most popular permanent exhibits is Force and Motion, a space where you can test and explore the properties of physics. Similarly, the Every Last Drop exhibit explores the unique properties of water, from its movement and power to the many ways we depend on it, as well as the need for conservation.

Younger kids will really dig the Dino Lab, where they can learn about paleontology by unearthing their own discoveries, and the whole family will be fascinated by the genetics lab. Other interactive exhibits include daily activities in the Demo Area, a test kitchen where kids can explore the properties of food, and a puzzling maze park. The museum also has a planetarium, nature center, and hosts special events.

Located on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures contains more than 72,000 examples of antique toys and scaled miniatures. The museum originated in 1982 from the personal collections of Mary Harris Francis and Barbara Marshall, and since then has grown to occupy 33,000 square feet.

Tourists will find an impressive collection of antique toys that includes dolls, figures, games, model trains, and more. Some of the most nostalgic examples are Ovaltine's 1938 Telematic Radio Orphan Annie Pin, agate marbles, and a set of lead soldiers complete with mold.

The museum's collection of fine-scale miniatures is the largest in the world , featuring perfectly scaled reproductions of actual art and artifacts. Among the most remarkable pieces are a 1955 Singer sewing machine miniature and a tiny ornate chest in 1:12 scale crafted from ebony and gold. The museum also hosts special events that allow adults to revisit childhood, like marble tournaments or Saturday morning cartoons, complete with a big bowl of cereal.

The permanent collection at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art began with the Bebe and Crosby Kemper Collection, which includes works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Robert Mapplethorpe, and William Wegman. Groups of 10 or more can arrange to have a free docent-led tour, and there are free drop-in tours each Saturday that are open to the public without reservation. The museum also hosts programs and workshops tailored to engage various groups, including youth, teens, adults, and the whole family.

Located in the Crown Center complex, the Hallmark Visitors Center displays the history of the greeting card industry. It tells the rags-to-riches story of how Joyce Hall created an international institution based on caring. The center's exhibits explore the company's history and includes interactive stations, as well as a film. It is also home to Kaleidoscope , a children's creativity center that allows kids to use various materials to create their own art. The sessions last 50 minutes and are free of charge, led by Hallmark's own creative staff.

Tourists looking for a nice neighborhood to explore will love Westport, one of the city's oldest and most popular sightseeing destinations. It was named for its position as the "last stop" in Kansas City before pioneers set out on their journey west and is the site of the Battle of Westport, a crucial victory in ending the Civil War.

This neighborhood is also home to the 1855 Harris House Museum . Today, it is a trendy neighborhood filled with the hottest new restaurants and plenty of shopping at its chic boutiques and antique stores. The community also hosts festivals, concerts, and holiday celebrations.

The Airline History Museum at the Downtown Airport on the northern edge of the city is guaranteed to make any flight enthusiast's heart beat faster. Here, you can relive the days when people still flew with propeller machines over the Atlantic, and Kansas City was the TWA headquarters. Flight veterans will be only too happy to tell their stories, and visitors can admire the many aircraft on display.

One of the museum's best-known pieces is the TWA Moonliner, a scale model of the iconic passenger rocket conceived by Howard Hughes, Walt Disney, and Wernher Von Braun. Located in the Crown Center with LEGOLAND, SEA LIFE Kansas City is home to a 260,000-gallon tank that features a walk-through ocean tunnel. From within the transparent tunnel, visitors can see sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, and other aquarium residents of the Tropical Ocean Exhibit all around them.

One of the most popular exhibits at the aquarium is the Sea Turtle Rescue Center, home to several green sea turtles who were rescued but were unable to be returned to the wild. A favorite for kids is the Interactive Touchpool, where visitors can handle ocean life including sea urchins and starfish. Young artists will appreciate Doodle Reef, where they can watch their drawings come to life.

Union Station was built in 1914 and accommodated thousands of passengers. It included a waiting room designed to hold up to 10,000 people. The station closed in the 1980s, underwent major renovations, and reopened in 1999 with shops, restaurants, and other services. It has a much smaller railway service as it now functions as an Amtrak stop.

The Kauffman Memorial Garden has provided an oasis to the residents of Kansas City since the spring of 2000, covering two acres within the Kauffman Legacy Park . The gardens include both perennials and annual beds, which are changed each season, as well as a variety of decorative and shade trees. The park is also home to several bronze sculptures created by artist Tom Corbin, as well as fountains and stone landscaping.

Parking and admission to the gardens are free, and tours can be arranged in advance by contacting the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Family Foundation; the entire park is wheelchair accessible.

Another excellent green space is the Jacob L. Loose Park , a 75-acre public park that features a 1.5 -acre rose garden , with approximately 130 varieties. It also offers recreation space, including tennis courts, fountains, and a spray park for kids (or anyone) to cool off in.

The Money Museum at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City is a great free tourist attraction for anyone interested in the history and evolution of American currency. Permanent exhibits include the Harry S. Truman Coin Collection, an actual gold bar, an informational exhibit about inflation, and an interactive personal finance exhibit.

Kansas City has so much hometown pride! People love living in KC, and you’ll understand why after visiting. Here are some of the best things to do in Kansas City, Missouri, during your visit. 

1. Visit one of the city’s world-class museums.  

Whether you love history, art, or music—there’s a museum you’ll love in Kansas City! KC is home to several world-class museums, and visiting them is one of the best things to do in Kansas City, Missouri.

We loved visiting the National World War I Museum , the only museum in the United States dedicated to remembering the lasting impact of WWI. The museum was phenomenal and filled with fascinating information, including theaters, replicas of trenches, propaganda posters, and more. We also loved taking the elevator to the top of the Liberty Memorial Tower for incredible city views. 

While we didn’t have time to visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art , this museum is a must-visit for art aficionados. The museum features over 35,000 from Europe, Asia, and America, dating back thousands of years. Plus, admission is free! You can also visit the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art for free guided tours of some up-and-coming contemporary artwork. 

If you’re interested in music, you may love visiting the American Jazz Museum . This museum celebrates the history and rich diversity of jazz music, including the styles of jazz, instruments, and famous musicians in Kansas City and beyond. And if you love sports, you may enjoy paying a visit to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum . This is one of the few museums in the United States that explains sports segregation.

2. Travel down the KC Wine Road .

The Greater Kansas City area is home to over 40 wineries less than an hour’s drive from Kansas City, Missouri. You can explore all these wineries on the KC Wine Road . If you want to check out several wineries in one day, you can check out the wine itineraries the KC Wine Road created to help you see the best wineries in each region. 

We ventured over to Kansas to check out KC Wine Co. during our trip to Kansas City. We visited in the afternoon on a Friday, and we loved the laid-back atmosphere and live music. I ordered a wine flight, and it was super reasonably priced—only $9 for five wine samples, and I even got to keep the tasting glass as a souvenir! The staff was so helpful and friendly as well. 

KC Wine Co. also makes ciders, seltzers, and beers, and they make wine slushies if wine by the glass isn’t your thing. I’d highly recommend stopping at KC Wine Co. during your trip down the KC Wine Road—it was awesome! 

3. Explore the fountains around town .

Kansas City has more boulevards than any city in the world besides Paris, but this city has another impressive claim to fame—they also have more fountains than any other city besides Rome! 

Kansas City is home to over 200 fountains, and roughly one-fourth of these fountains are open to the public. The oldest working fountain, the Women’s Leadership Fountain, dates back to 1899, and other fountains, like the Crown Center Square Fountain, have water jets choreographed to spurt to music from the Kansas City Symphony!

You’ll find the Kansas City Love Mural , pictured below, is in the Crossroads Arts District, along with the #KCLoves Mural . On the side of Tom’s Town Distilling in Downtown Kansas City, you can see the Chiefs Kingdom mural to honor the city’s championship football team.

5. Order a cocktail at a local distillery .

Did you know Kansas City had a thriving drinking and bootlegging scene during prohibition? While you’re in Kansas City, you can visit some of the top-notch distilleries that pay homage to the city’s centuries-long commitment to serving great drinks. 

J. Rieger & Co. is the most famous distillery in Kansas City. J. Rieger & Co. was founded in 1887 in Kansas City’s West Bottoms Livestock Exchange District. They offered over one-hundred alcoholic products and served 250,000+ customers across the country with mail-order delivery. When prohibition was enacted in 1919, the company took a hit and had to close. However, in 2014, the company reopened in its original location, and you can sample whiskey, gin, vodka, and other spirits! J. Rieger & Co. also offers guided tours, spirit tastings, and a lounge where you can sit and sip a cocktail while overlooking the production floor. 

There are many other distilleries to visit in Kansas City, including Mean Mule Distilling Co ., a distillery that makes agave spirits, including tequila, gin, and mezcal. We loved our drinks here—the Good Luck Golden Rod, one of their seasonal drinks, was excellent! I’d highly recommend trying it while you’re here. If you love bourbon, pay a visit to Tom’s Town Distilling , where you can enjoy craft cocktails, small bites, and distillery tours with a tasting of five spirits for just $20. 

6. Go shopping at the Country Club Plaza.  

Though I wouldn’t typically put “shopping” on a best-of list for any city, Country Club Plaza is a worthy exception. Country Club Plaza is a sprawling outdoor shopping mall with over 100 retailers and restaurants, making it one of the best things to do in Kansas City, Missouri.  

Country Club Plaza is filled with beautiful Spanish-style architecture, making it a beautiful spot to walk around on a date night. It’s a popular location for seasonal events, like the Plaza Lighting Ceremony in the winter and the Plaza Art Fair in the fall, but you don’t need to be here for an event to enjoy your time at this shopping center. You can even go on a segway tour in Country Club Plaza !

You can shop at high-end retailers, like Michael Kors and Tiffany & Co., or check out popular local stores, like the Made in KC Marketplace . I highly recommend checking out this boutique while you’re in town—they sell tons of locally-made goods, including appeal, food, home décor, beauty products, and more. This would be an excellent place to grab a souvenir from your trip to bring home! Plus, if you’d like to hang out, they also have a coffee shop, cocktail bar, and places to eat within the shop. 

You can also make dinner reservations here at popular restaurants, like The Cheesecake Factory and The Melting Pot. However, I’d recommend eating at Gram & Dun. This local restaurant is considered one of the best places to eat in Kansas City and is the perfect location for a celebratory dinner, date night, or girl’s night out. 

7. Take a walk around the Kauffman Memorial Garden.  

Kansas City has dozens of beautiful parks and gardens you can’t miss the chance to stroll around during your visit to the city—and one of the most beautiful gardens is the Kauffman Memorial Garden. 

Ewing & Muriel Kauffman were a beloved couple and two philanthropists in Kansas City, and the Kauffman Memorial Garden was built in their honor to commemorate their positive impact on the city. The Kauffman Memorial Garden is free to explore and includes tons of tulips, plenty of benches, and a few fountains to admire, making it one of the best things to do in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Jacob L. Loose Park is another gorgeous green space to explore during your time in Kansas City. It has a lake, tennis courts, waterpark, rose garden, and even historical markers from the Civil War.  

8. Venture through historic Union Station .

Union Station, established in 1914, was once a high-trafficked train station in Kansas City. It’s an impressive sight to behold—the architecture is exquisite, and the ceilings are nearly 100-feet high. Since 1999, Union Station has been a popular tourist attraction that houses restaurants, like Pierpont’s Restaurant and Harvey’s Restaurant , and tons of the best things to do in Kansas City, Missouri, like the P lanetarium, Model Train Gallery, Science City, City Theatre, and more. 

Union Station is free to visit; however, you may need to pay for the cost of the attractions inside. We didn’t have much time to explore, so we popped into the Model Train Gallery with a suggested donation of $5 per person or $10 per family. 

9. Explore the historic River Market neighborhood .

River Market is an awesome neighborhood in Kansas City right along—you guessed it—the Missouri River. While the most popular attraction in River Market is the Farmers Market, which occurs from 8 AM – 3 PM on Saturday and Sunday, you can also visit City Market , an indoor and outdoor market selling produce, spices, and handmade goods every day of the week. We particularly loved stopping at Carollo’s Italian Grocery & Deli to see all the authentic Italian groceries and goods on display. 

River Market also has some other cool places to explore. Pigwich is a popular sandwich shop for lunch, and Tribe Street Kitchen is an excellent stop for a trendy brunch. Before exploring City Market, I highly recommend stopping at the Made in KC Trolley Café . This coffee shop is a sister company of the local business, Made in Kansas City, and operates out of a remodeled trolley. We loved the handmade pastries, and the coffee was great, too! 

10. Sip on a refreshing beer at Boulevard Brewing Company .

Boulevard Brewing Company was founded in 1989 and, since then, has grown to be the most prominent brewery in the entire Midwest. Locals and visitors alike consider Boulevard Brewing Company one of the best things to do in Kansas City, Missouri!

Boulevard Brewing Company’s two-story Beer Hall & Recreation Center is one of the best things to do in Kansas City, Missouri. On the first floor, you can explore the Recreation Center, filled with exhibits about the brewery’s history, and then check out the shop with tons of merchandise, like apparel, glassware, and of course, beer, which you can bring home with you. 

Upstairs, the Beer Hall has tons of seating, dozens of beers on tap, and a great food menu. If it’s a nice day, you can also sit on the outdoor deck with great city views. We enjoyed the upbeat atmosphere at Boulevard Brewing Company, and the beer and food were great too.

11. Enjoy the shopping, dining, and nightlife in Old Westport.  

Old Westport is a neighborhood in Kansas City that has history dating back to the 1800s, including the Battle of Westport , the largest battle in the Civil War on the west side of the Mississippi River. Old Westport is one of Kansas City’s central entertainment districts, in addition to the Power & Light District and Crossroads District, with tons of fun things to do and places to eat. 

While you’re in Old Westport, don’t miss the chance to eat a Julep , a whiskey bar, or catch an improv show at The KC Improv Company . You can also grab brunch at Snooze, an A.M. Eatery , or enjoy a glass of wine at Ça Va, a swanky cocktail lounge and wine bar. 

12. Try some authentic Kansas City Barbecue .

Before you leave Kansas City, you can’t miss out on the city’s claim to fame—Kansas City barbecue! Compared to other prominent barbecue styles, Kansas City focused on sweet, thick sauces with a tomato, molasses, and brown sugar base. The meat itself is seasoned with a dry rub and slowly smoked over various types of woods. 

Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que is by far the most popular place to try barbecue in Kansas City, and they have three locations (all in Kansas!) where you can try their famous pulled pork, brisket, or ribs. Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque is another popular joint famous for ribs, and Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue is a great place to go if you’re looking for an upscale, sit-down dinner. Plus, they have five locations, making it easy to enjoy great barbecue wherever you are in Kansas City. 

We ate at Jack Stack Barbecue, but I, unfortunately, didn’t get the chance to snap a picture of my food before it was gone (whoops). The photo below was of a pulled pork slider I enjoyed at Parlor , a food hall in the Crossroads District and one of the best places to eat in Kansas City.

Personally, when we visited Kansas City, we stayed in Missouri for 99% of the time. We did cross over into Kansas to visit a winery, but this totally isn’t necessary. You can stay in Missouri the entire time during your visit to Kansas City and still enjoy all the best things to do in Kansas City.

Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is the best place to fly into when visiting Kansas City. It’s a short half-hour drive from Downtown Kansas City.

Top 5 airlines flying to kansas city.

The Flight crew didn’t serve us until about 1.5 hours into the flight because of turbulence but after it ended it was fine to move around. They served us water only and snacks and then NEVER, NOT ONE TIME came through to collect trash until right before landing about 1.5 hours later. There was absolutely no need for that. They crew was just standing around talking and visiting with each other and really never tried to see if we might want something besides water or even try to come pick up trash. This is VERY unusual for a Delta flight but it was not what I would have expected for a 4 hour flight.

The 1st class male crew member was very pleasant - the short female with round glasses , maybe in 50’s had no personality- never spoke when delivering my food, drink, & never smiled the whole trip! In fact looked annoyed when the boarding proses was happening- I would never hire this woman - unfriendly . Have never dealt with a crew member like her-

5-hour delay due to storms in Tanoa and airspace restricted by Miami traffic controllers.

A regional sized plane was used for a cross country flight with no overhead bin space. I had to "pink check" my laptop and my medications. I was NOT pleased!!!!

Atlanta boarding crew at gate were filled with arrogance and were disrespectful. In flight crew showed indifference to the needs of passengers. This is about the flight from ATL to BDL.

Boarding was somewhat chaotic. Unable to evaluate crew or food/drink because captain kept them seated due to turbulence. Have no idea if entertainment was offered.

The gate area was incredibly short staffed, with one representative manning 4-5 flights, which caused a 3 hr delay in boarding even though the plane was all ready to leave. Other flights also were delayed because of this. The flight crew was awesome and I feel bad for the only gate worker on call, but Delta needs to hire more employees.

Going through JFK’s security is a mess. The TSA security said no shoes on the bins. So, we place our shoes in the belt and they came out all over the belt. Boarding was delayed and Flight as well.

Safe and on time were the positives. The plane wasn't cleaned before boarding, there was garbage and food on the floor and in the seat pocket. The TV screen was small and the picture fuzzy, audio quality was poor. Seatbelt was fraying and seat did not recline properly. No charging ports near the seats,

Confusing. Delay updates were out of whack At one point it said my flight was 25 hours. Three gate changes and two delays only to change back to original departure time. Gate announcer and on board flight attendant (Alejandro) making the announcements was impossible to understand due to accent and speed of speech. After beverage service the rear flight attendants sat back there on their phones. No refills no checking in, one sweep through for trash collection. Very impersonal. Bring back Coke products

Business class is great. New airplane, very comfortable, better than some of the major airlines I am used to

Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

An hour and a half late is UNACCEPTABLE. The negative impact to our family is unconscionable. And for the price we were forced to pay...

No lounge access with “United First” ticket. False alarm about late flight, jeopardizing connection. Wrong meal. Loose power socket would not hold plug, could not charge device. In-flight access to text messaging did not work. Toilet seat on plane would not stay up.

We ended up with seats in the very back. So they did not recline. Have no idea why, we reserved and checked in very early. The isles were very narrow and the seats had very little leg room. But they did give us water, and a snack.

Check in etc was very good. As for on the plane, it was like flying in a freezer. It was so cold, i have flown for years and never been so cold on a plane. Staff on board said its always cold when flying which is a load of rubbish. They wouldnt put any heating on and now i have the flu because of this .

I’ve had a couple flights this week on United that were delayed by an hour or more

Surprisingly easy! I was hesitant to try this, but the cost swayed me. I actually felt like I had less stress than all the taxiing and possible delays that occur with short regional flights where you spend less time in the air than getting to and from the plane..

This flight was delayed multiple times and eventually canceled around 2-3ish. Original take off time was around 10:30am. By 3, there were no other options out of Houston, so stuck in Houston for from 3pm - 11am the next day.

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

I paid $380 for my one-way ticket from California to Minnesota. The fair did not include online check-in. I received instructions from their app to check in at a kiosk. At the kiosk, the boarding pass would not print until an actual person came to verify that I had a personal item and not a carry-on item, On the plane, the person next to me was drunk and allowed to continue to order alcohol. United is garbage I’d rather fly spirit.

LIT to DFW - 3 hours late; the entire plane had been boarded before they told us there was a delay due to a weather-related ground stop in Dallas. DFW to MAY - 2+ hours late due to A/C needing to be repaired after everyone had boarded, then when we finally reach the runway, the First Officer timed out and we had to taxi all the way back to the gate and wait for a new one. I arrived in New Orleans 5+ hours later than I should have. Return flights were completely cancelled; rebooked through the app to fly through CLT instead of DFW. MSY to CLT had no issues, but CLT to LIT was delayed 1.25 hrs because flight attendants had not arrived to the airport yet. At least they didn’t make us all sit on the plane to wait for them. I should have driven.

Tray table was filthy when I sat down. I needed to have someone come clean it because there was food and stains on it WiFi didn’t work after paying for in-flight WiFi. Food was terrible and was not filling at all Chicken was rubbery Flight attendant had an attitude, interrupted me and wasn’t able to answer basic questions about the food selection such as “does the chicken have red sauce in it”. If your flight attendants are not going to know what is in the meals so we can make an educated decision based on dietary restrictions, they shouldn’t be on the plane. My 1.5 year old niece was sleeping and dropped her binkie. I went on the ground under the chairs looking for it. It was at that time that she came up to me as I’m CLEARLY on all 4s with a flashlight and said “I need to get by”. I said one moment please I’m getting something from under the seat (while my head was literally under the seat). Her reply was “no you need to move now” and proceeded to almost push me out of the way. I looked up and all I saw was her toes under my eyes. When I looked in front of me, her private parts were inches away from my face. I then made a comment “you couldn’t waited 2 seconds?” and her response was, “no I need to use the bathroom”. I understand that and would never want to be the reason someone couldn’t get to the bathroom but I was under the seat. She could’ve gone around the other way instead of harassing me, basically placing her private parts on my head and borderline pushing me out of the way. You don’t pay that much for this deplorable experience. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had on American. I will be absolutely thinking twice and thrice about flying American Airlines again. I would rather pay more to fly delta because at least I know their WiFi will work and their flight attendants won’t have a shitty attitude for no reason, nor will they act the way this woman did. Unacceptable.

Liked - nothing. Disliked - delayed 35+ min sitting on the plane. Caused me to miss my connection in Charlotte. American Airlines is the worst US Air Carrier company with atrocious customer service.

Worst situation ever! I booked my tickets for this trip on Alaska Airlines. I guess AA is a partner and we flew nonstop from Eugene to PHX on an AA jet. I had to pay for luggage from PHX to EUG. And this was an Alaska Airlines reservation paid for with Alaska airlines credit card! Got to the PHX airport and was not able to check bags because of some weird issue with the AA software. My reservation had to be the-entered by the agent. I will never pick another American Airlines flight on the Alaska Airlines website. While on vacation, I tried to upgrade our seats for the trip home. The request just buffered and never went through. I tried four times and was charged four times on my credit card. The card was charged but the seats were never changed. What a wreck!

Left from gate 30 minutes before flight. Never been late to a flight ever. It says 15 minutes before explicitly on the ticket.

I like the boarding process, it was fast. The seat doesn’t have a TV for a long flight and food wasn’t served, just snacks.

Use planes with TVs on flights over 4 hours. The free entertainment was a cheap in between solution for a very long flight that you don't even bother providing meals or decent snacks.

Missed our departing flight due to poor baggage drop staff. At the airport with 2 & 1/2 hours to spare and waited in bag check in until 15 minutes prior to gates closing before baggage staff asked us to move to the front of the line. We weren’t the only passengers that missed the flight. Poor organizational operations by Spirit staff. Otherwise , the return trip was fine.

Worst airline experience ever. Lost my IPad going thru security. Charged for my dog carriage at the gate not at ticket counter. Gave away my seat 6D. Expressed I wanted my seat back after charging me 99 for dog carriage. Should have thrown it out. Had a 16 yr old Yorkie heading to Boston after being a snowbird. Seats small. Very bad experience. Still don’t have my IPad. Horrible

My mother was HARASSED AND ACCOSTED by the gate agent for her bag. I pre purchased the bag fee and the gate agent made my 78 year old mother board, deplane, re pay for her bag fee and board again. The gate agent made my mother pick up her own bag and REFUSED to help her, she is an older woman who wasn’t bothering anyone on a flight that had maybe 30’total passengers. I am going to sue this airlines for their HORRIBLE customer service and treatment of my mother, and all this occurred the day after Mother’s Day!!!

The boarding gate was moved so many times that I missed my flight. No attendants would help me. The wrong gate was even on my boarding pass. I had to repurchase everything. I’ll never fly again. Really a terrible day as I had planned to see a former student who is dying in Louisville Never ever will I forget that day. Your airline is totally uncaring.

Horrible, first flight delayed. They switched my connecting flight while I was en route and even though I was originally supposed to be on the flight going back home to boston, refused to let me board and told me I would have to wait for next flight that was 14 hours later. Ended up renting a car and driving 6.5 hours back home. Still getting messages about flight and it is now showing that the other flight they put me on is now canceled and I would have to wait 24 hours for the next one. I will never book with spirit again

Hated it I would not use Kayak or Spirit ever again.

They stuck us with multiple extra fees. I will never fly spirit again

8. The Regnier Family Wonderscope Children’s Museum of Kansas City

T he Regnier Family Wonderscope Children’s Museum is at the top of any good list of Kansas City activities for kids. This non-profit STEM-themed museum provides hours of giggles and learning! Inside the museum, you’re kids will have fun exploring 30,000 square feet of exhibits such as a KC BBQ play cafe, a child-sized grocery store, and even a high-energy zone where kids can run, jump, and pretend being their favorite KC professional sports player! 

After exploring the cool interactive exhibits, head outside to the half acre of nature scapes and maze that are open year round.

Adult admission is $9, and kids get in for $12.

9. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City

Yes, I agree. Banks are typically boring places that you avoid visiting. However, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and Money Museum is definitely not your typical bank!

Here you can lift a real gold bar, view the Harry S. Truman coin collection, and learn all about how money is printed! You can even design a dollar with your face on it! You can even take home a free bag of shredded money as a souvenir. Best of all, you can keep the money you already have because admission is free!

10. Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Have a family member who loves baseball? Don’t let them down by skipping this attraction! Learn about the history of African American baseball players as they bravely crossed cultural lines to make significant progress in the game of baseball in our country!

Walk around the Field of Legends which is home to bronze statues of 12 of the biggest figures in negro baseball history. The Geddy Lee baseball collection displays over 200 autographed baseballs!

11. The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is home to the largest collection of historic toys and miniatures in the world. They have dolls and dollhouses that date back to the 1800’s. Be sure to find the Buck Rogers Rocket Space Pistol from 1934!

12. Nelson Atkins Museum of Art

For any budding artists, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a great option. In fact, bring paper and pencils for yourself and little ones to sketch a favorite piece of art or sculpture. (The museum does request no pens, paint, crayons or markers).

Beyond the Museum itself, the grounds are also a fun outing. There is a pathway that encircles the property filled with sculptures, interactive exhibits and of course, the even popular shuttlecocks.  

Tips for sharing fine art with kids: Nelson Atkins Museum suggests short and repetitive visits. It is more valuable to view and discuss a few art objects rather than trying to see all the art at once. Try just 30 minutes to 2 hours at a time. The museum is free, so come often!

The Kansas City area is home to many major professional teams including Sporting KC Soccer, Kansas City Monarchs baseball Club, The Royals, The Kansas City Mavericks hockey team and of course, the Kansas City Chiefs.

14. Watch a Chiefs Game At Power & Light

If tickets to a game are out of the budget, another really fun option is to head to the Power & Light district to watch a game. Power & Light Game Day Experience is free to attend and is located in a huge space with the biggest screen outside the stadium. There is tons of outdoor seating options as well as several restaurants with outdoor patios facing the screen.

If you don’t want the restaurant vibe, there is a big area of stadium-style seating, beverage and food stands. Oh, and if it is raining, snowing, or just really cold, there is a retractable roof they close.

15. Catch a Royals Game

If you have a baseball fan and you visit in summer, you can see a KC Royals baseball game. The Kansas City Royals are an American professional baseball team in the MLB as a member club of the American League Central division.

Even better, children 32 inches in height and under do not require a ticket to enter Kauffman Stadium for Kansas City Royals games. However, they must sit on the lap of an accompanying adult.

One of the best days to attend a Royals game is Family FunDay Sunday. Each Sunday home game there is kid friendly entertainment and activities in the Outfield, as well as a pre-game player autograph signing atop the Royals dugout.

Great Kansas City Parks & Nature Reserves

16. explore swope park.

This 1800+ acre park is the 51st largest municipal park in the entire country!  Swope Park hosts outdoor performances of Broadway musicals and concerts at Starlight Theatre, features a tree-top adventure park, and is home to a beautiful golf course that once hosted the Kansas City Open Invitational of the PGA Tour. 

The Kansas City Zoo is also located here, making it the perfect place to stop and have a picnic after your time at the zoo! The park welcomes over 2 million guests per year, so be sure you check it off your list of adventures to have with kids in Kansas City!

17. Lakeside Nature Center

Lakeside Nature Center is an incredible place to enjoy learning about local native wildlife, including birds of prey, snakes, amphibians, turtles, fish, and invertebrates. You can explore the exhibits on your own, or sign up for a wildlife program.

18. The Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden

This small 2-acre botanic garden is replanted four times a year and always has a beautiful assortment of flowers, plants, and trees. In addition to the gardens, there are fountains, sculptures, and a resident cat to keep the kiddos entertained. The garden attracts butterflies throughout the warmer months.

Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on one of the shaded benches in the zen garden.

Explore River Market

The historic River Market neighborhood is located just past downtown and near the Missouri River. It is the oldest part of Kansas City. There is a lot for families to explore and can be a full day of fun on its own.

19. City Market

City Market dates back to 1857 and is one of the oldest farmers’ markets in the Midwest.

City Market is another of the fun free things to do in Kansas City with kids. The farmers market is in full swing on Saturday and Sunday, but there are produce vendors, shops, and restaurants open every day of the week.

There is a candy shop in the River Market square and Betty Rae’s Ice Cream on Delaware Street if you are looking for a sweet treat.

20. Arabia Steamboat Museum

The Steamboat Arabia museum is located in the City Market square and is well worth a visit.

The Arabia Steamboat Museum displays thousands of salvaged items from a ship that sunk in the Missouri River in 1856. 200 tons of frontier-bound cargo was lost when the steamboat Arabia sank in the Missouri River and is on display at the museum.

Explore the lives of the Western pioneers through the story of the sunken Arabia and its cargo. It’s a remarkable time capsule of life on the American frontier that is told through a series of short movies that will have your family chatting about life, lost treasure and following your dreams.

21. Town of Kansas Bridge and River Bluff Park

From the River Market, it’s a very short walk to the Town of Kansas Observation Deck for great views of the Missouri River. Along the way are plaques and displays sharing the history of Kansas City (once named the Town of Kansas).

You can take stairs or an elevator down to the river path. Along the way are several beautiful bridges.

The broad path is good for both walking and biking. Kansas City’s Riverfront Heritage Trail has several historical markers and statues to commemorate the heritage of Lewis and Clark’s travel along the river as well as many other explorers that made their way along the Missouri River and to Kansas City.

As you continue along the path, you will find Berkley Riverfront Park.

22. Ride the Street Car

I’m not even sure you can really say you experienced Kansas City with kids if you don’t take the KC Street Car. From River Market, there are several locations where you can jump on the KC Streetcar. You can get off at several locations between the River Front area and Union Station. It’s also fun just to ride the street car.

Want to explore Liberty, Missouri? Start with this beginner's guide to the city

In the city of Liberty, Missouri — the second town to ever be incorporated west of the Mississippi — you'll find history, hiking, ghost hunting, and a quaint town square with plenty of shopping and dining.

While Liberty, Missouri, is sometimes seen as a suburb in the sprawling Northland, its history actually predates that of Kansas City.

In fact, Liberty is the second oldest town to be incorporated west of the Mississippi (the first is St. Genevieve, Missouri). While settlers had lived in the region before 1820, Liberty was officially incorporated in 1829 — over two decades before Kansas City, Missouri, was incorporated in 1850.

Liberty has a rich and complex history. While the city’s name is synonymous with freedom, many early settlers brought enslaved people with them, and prominent town founders like Alexander Doniphan and David Rice Atchison were enslavers.

In 1850, African Americans made up roughly 20% of Liberty’s population, and according to the census that year, there were only 14 free Black individuals in all of Clay County.

Organizations like Liberty African American Legacy Memorial have chronicled Black history and experience in Liberty, to ensure that the town’s history in the Civil War era and beyond is accurately depicted to the public.

Students and faculty at William Jewell College in Liberty (whose founders profited from slavery , and which was built in part by slave labor) created the Slavery, Memory, and Justice Project to reckon with that part of their campus’ history.

The best way to learn more about Liberty’s past and present is to take a day trip.

Read on to find where you can shop, find where Joseph Smith — the founding prophet of the Latter-Day Saints movement — was once incarcerated, see a (perhaps fraudulent) painting of George Washington’s baptism, and perhaps even spend the night with some ghosts.

Downtown Liberty

Liberty has a population of roughly 30,000, and like many small towns, it has a walkable downtown with a historic Main Street feel. You can plan your visit to coincide with First Thursdays , when downtown shops stay open late until 8 p.m., and you can enter into a raffle to win a gift card from a local shop or restaurant.

While you’re there, you can stop at one of Liberty’s many locally owned shops, like Catfish + Tater Boutique at 4 N. Main Street, which sells fashionable women’s clothing and accessories.

Main Street Goods and Goodies is a gift shop at 16 N. Main Street that sells a unique combination of antiques, home goods, as well as treats like candies and sodas.

Lemonality is around the corner at 10 W. Kansas Street, selling quirky gifts and home goods, like boutique candles, etched glasses, cute cards, and other paper goods.

Hammerhand Coffee , located at 249 West Mill Street, is a 10-minute walk outside of historic downtown Liberty. There, you can enjoy a matcha latte or pour-over coffee made with some of their locally roasted beans. Their first location was in the heart of downtown Liberty, but in 2016 the building’s roof collapsed . After weathering the building challenges and the pandemic, Hammerhand finally settled into its permanent location in 2021.

When you get hungry, 3 Halves Brewpub and BBQ at 110 E Kansas Street serves up traditional barbeque fare like brisket, pulled pork, and slabs of ribs. They also have more adventurous dishes, like the Mr. Rib sandwich with flash-fried rib meat, or Meat Mac with your choice of BBQ meat mixed into macaroni and cheese.

Oh yeah, they also brew their own beer, with a roster of year-round flagship beers that include the Cervesa Peligrosa Mexican Lager. They also make smaller batches of different styles — you can currently have the Piña del Encanto, a pineapple coconut sour.

If barbecue and beer sound too heavy, you can get breakfast or lunch at Huey’s on the Square at 18 N. Main Street. They are only open until 2:30 p.m. (and are closed on Sundays). Huey's serves breakfast all day, and have diner staples like biscuits and gravy and build-your-own omelets. Their lunch menu has deli offerings like a BLT or tuna salad sandwich.

Another option is Luigi’s Italian Restaurant at 8 E. Franklin Street. Their massive menu includes pasta dishes like Spaghetti "OGB" with olive oil, garlic, and basil, or shrimp diavolo — shrimp in sherry wine tomato sauce served over linguine. You can also grab a pizza with any number of toppings, or try their homemade lasagna.

Make sure to take one of the city’s self-guided tours of Liberty’s notable sites. The Historic Downtown Walking Tour will bring you to 22 different locations, including the Jesse James Bank Museum , at the site of the former bank that the infamous James-Younger Gang is said to have robbed in 1866.

The tour also stops by the Historic Liberty Jail , now owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. That’s where Joseph Smith was imprisoned from 1838-39 , after the Missouri governor issued the infamous " Mormon Extermination Order ."

The African American History Tour is a one-mile self-guided tour that shows Liberty’s pivotal sites of Black history, such as the Garrison School , which was opened in 1877 to educate the area’s Black youth. Or you can see homes that embody Liberty’s architectural heritage with the one-mile Dougherty Historic District Neighborhood Walking Tour (the neighborhood is less than a 10-minute walk from downtown).

Aside from First Thursday, downtown Liberty frequently hosts other events that you can coordinate your visit with. Every Saturday in May through October, from 7 a.m. to noon, you can find Historic Downtown Liberty Farmers’ Market at Liberty Square. Vendors sell items like produce, meat, pickled foods, and honey, and you can also buy crafts and gifts.

Make Music Liberty on June 21 is a citywide festival dedicated to making accessible music. You can see free concerts all across town, from porches to downtown sidewalks. It’s a great excuse to explore the area.

On July 27, put on your Santa costume in the sweltering heat and head to the annual Christmas in July Beer Crawl from 1 to 5 p.m. For $30, you can purchase a wristband that allows you to sample at least 25 beers. There will also be places to buy snacks, and you can also stop into downtown Liberty shops to browse (and also cool down).

William Jewell College

William Jewell College , established in 1849, is one of the oldest private colleges in Missouri. You can take a walking tour of the scenic, 200-acre campus as a way to immerse yourself in Liberty’s history.

The oldest standing building on campus is Jewell Hall, completed in 1853. The colonial-style building, with its statuesque white columns, looks like it could reside on an East Coast campus.

The building has been through a lot: It housed Union soldiers during the Civil War in 1861 during the Battle of Blue Mills Landing. Because William Jewell’s founder and namesake was an enslaver, William Jewell's students and faculty have called for Jewell Hall to be renamed after the enslaved individuals who constructed the building.

While you’re on campus, you will also have to head into Gano Chapel to see a controversial painting of George Washington being baptized. Gano Chapel, built in 1926, is named for Washington’s Revolutionary War chaplain John Gano.

While Washington was known to be a member of the Anglican Church, some claimed that the Baptist minister baptized the first President during the Revolutionary War. Other historians, however, dispute the claim. Either way, it is an unusual piece of history to check out.

Mt. Memorial Cemetery is a stone’s throw from Gano Chapel, but it is technically owned by the City of Liberty. In any case, it is also worth a visit if you like history. The cemetery was Liberty’s first official burial ground and the first burial there is believed to have taken place as early as 1819. It's a nice place to take a walk in keeping with the 19th-century convention that cemeteries should be park-like spaces where a family would want to visit their deceased loved ones.

To get the lowdown on all the buildings on campus, Liberty has another self-guided walking tour that will meet your needs. This one-and-a-half mile tour highlights the William Jewell campus as well as notable homes and historic sites in the surrounding neighborhood.

Recently added to the William Jewell campus is the “Freedom Walk," centered around a series of bronze plaques that discuss the enslaved people who built the campus, Black employees who worked at the school but couldn’t enroll, the integration of the school, and other parts of the campus’ history with slavery.

Belvoir Winery

Belvoir Winery is a must-visit if you like history, wine, ghost hunting, or a combination of all three. This winery, hotel, and event venue is located at the old Missouri Odd Fellow’s Home.

The Independent Order of the Odd Fellows is a fraternal order whose first North American chapter dates back to Maryland in 1819, though its roots go back even further to 18th-century England.

The Odd Fellows were committed to building facilities that could care for orphans, the elderly, and indigent members of society. In 1900, the Missouri chapter of the Oddfellows began building the Odd Fellows Complex at the 240-acre site now located at 1325 Odd Fellows Road in Liberty.

The complex eventually grew to encompass a farm, a cemetery, and many buildings, including a school, hospital, administration building, and “Old Folks Home.” Most of the Odd Fellows’ buildings like the school and orphanage were closed in the 1950s, but Belvoir Winery has maintained a detailed overview of the complex’s history .

The three major buildings that remain embody the grand Jacobethan Revival-style architecture that characterized the complex, making it a scenic wedding venue.

But while the Odd Fellows were dedicated to helping society, Atlas Obscura also discusses the Odd Fellows’ more sinister rituals that took place at the complex. This history (and the fact that there are 600 people buried in the cemetery there) is why we listed the complex as one of the creepiest places in the Kansas City region .

This haunted history also makes Belvoir a fun place to stay the night, or if that sounds too scary, maybe you can just head there for the afternoon to try some locally-made wine. They have a range of options, including Norton’s Missouri Dry Red or Boo’s Red Dessert wine.

But, if you really want to get spooky, you can buy a ticket to attend a paranormal investigation with a team of Paranormal Research Investigators at Belvoir. For about $65, you can attend one of these intimate events from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The next scheduled tour will be on July 13, and you should buy tickets soon because each tour sells a limited number. Or if you want to wait for a more appropriate season, it’s an especially great activity to do around Halloween .

Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary

If you are looking for a new place to take a hike, Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary is at 407 N. La Frenz Road, located only a four-minute drive from the William Jewell campus.

Operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation, the 100-acre sanctuary has four miles of trails, including two asphalt trails and one ADA-accessible trail.

There is a Nature Center where you can see live rescued animals or taxidermied Missouri wildlife like a bobcat and great horned owl. They also sell some pretty cool bear T-shirts.

It is free to visit the nature sanctuary, but they have a requested donation amount of $5 per vehicle or $2 per person for groups of four or more. Their hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and they ask that you do not bring pets.
