W W agendrift Safaris, which is under German management, is situated in the Warmbad Nature Reserve, one of the most beautiful regions in South Africa and offers you a holiday of a lifetime in a natural environment.

The Game Reserve

The 3500 ha Private Game Reserve is one of the oldest nature reserves, where our guests can experience nature on guided safari tours amongst a variety of game species such as: buffalo, rhino, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, eland, kudu, nyala, bushbuck, common reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, hartebees, blesbuck, impala, oribi, duiker, steenbuck, warthog, ostrich, leopard and many nocturnal species.

More than 150 species of birds have been spotted on this fascinating landscape, including the secretary bird, the rare black eagle and bald-headed ibis. Centuries ago this region was used as an hunting area fort he legendary Bushmen, later the Zulus and Swazis.

Today many farmers, also of German, origin farm in the area. Due to a high annual rainfall many springs feed an abundance of streams flowing into the Witriver, which meanders through the Reserve for more than 8 km. A variety of fish inhabit the perennial Witriver.

The Warmbad mineral springs of up to 38 °C offer great relaxation with it’s healing properties.

Our friendly staff members can speak English, Afrikaans, German and Zulu and we provide individual and personal care to all our guests.

A temperate climate throughout the year in a malaria free area makes this Game Reserve an ideal holiday destination. In general the winter months are dry with temperatures of 3-8°C at night and 15-23°C durind the day. During the summer months temperatures of between 23-35°C may be experienced during the day. Pragtige plek om te oornag. Ons wou nie ry nie! Ons kon heerlik sit en ontspan op die stoep, daar is 'n ingeboude braai as jy 'n vleisie wil braai of net 'n lekker kaggel wil maak. Die vriendelike ontvangs van Christina en hulp met in- en aflaai van Hans laat jou nog meer welkom voel. Sal vir seker weer hier oorslaap! Ons het heerlik geslaap. Wonderlike skoon beddegoed gemaklik en rustige nag beleef. Het veilig gevoel. Al die nodige breekgoed wat ons benodig het, was beskikbaar. Het 'n heerlike ontbyt gemaak voor ons weer in die pad geval het. Was regtig 'n oasis in ons roete af Kaap toe.

Na 'n lang reis kom ons by Wagendrift Lodge aan om te oornag en weer krag te kry vir die res van die pad. En alreeds toe ons Laingsburg verlaat het ons besef dit was die regte oornagbestemming. Asemrowend mooi. Ons is begroet met absolute vriendelikheid en natuurskoon. Afgekoel in die swembad en die aand rustig by die goed toegeruste huisie oornag. Vir seker aanbeveelbaar.

Baie netjies, ten volle toegeruste eenheid. Stoep met vuurmaakplek is wenner. Uitsig oor berge en plaaslewe rustigheid was net wat mens nodig het. Sal enige tyd weer terugkee

Dankie dat julle julle "stukkie hemel" aan Suid-Afrika beskikbaar stel. Dit is 'n moet beleef! Uiters skoon, netjies, gerieflik, ruim. As selfsorg-eenheid, sal ons vir seker iets meer as 'n eenplaatstoof aanbeveel.

Wagendrift - Eine Region in Süfafrika

Die Region ist aufgeteilt in die kalten „Highlands“ im Norden und dem subtropischen „Lowveld“ im Süden. Sie bilden mit einer faszinierenden Artenvielfalt der Pflanzenwelt ein Paradies für mehr als 20 afrikanische Wildarten und 150 Vogelarten.

Diana Hafermalz

1999 verlegte die Sozialpädagogin Diana Hafermalz ihren Lebensmittelpunkt nach Südafrika: Ein Bekannter war dort Eigentümer eines Wildreservates geworden, ein Urlaubs- und Safaridomizil in der Gegend von Piet Retief, 350 Kilometer südöstlich von Johannisburg, an der Grenze zu Swaziland. Sie leistete dort Aufbauarbeit und wurde dabei immer wieder auf bewegende Weise konfrontiert mit den Schicksalen der schwarzen Bevölkerung, gekennzeichnet durch Hunger, Krankheiten (insbesondere Aids) Bildungsmangel und den Erbschaften des ehemaligen Apartheidsystems, die eine positive Lebensperspektive verhindern.

You’ll find big rewards in these five small kzn reserves.

Grand names dominate the KwaZulu-Natal nature scene. Hluhluwe, iSimangaliso, Ithala, Phinda – these parks take priority on most bush-lovers’ lists. And for good reason: when it comes to big game in the garden province, they’re unmatched.

But that doesn’t mean they’re all that’s out there. With the morning sun rising over Durban’s golden shores, I hit the N3 heading inland in search of the smaller, two-wheel-drive-friendly nature escapes that slip through most itineraries.

1. Shongweni Dam and Game Reserve

Half-an-hour outside of Durban, I found Shongweni , a place that feels so wild it’s hard to believe Durban’s scruffy outskirts are just 38 kilometres away. I booked into a safari-style tent at Ugede Camp on the edge of the Shongweni Dam. It’s a beautiful spot. Early in the morning, fishermen cast their lines around its shores to an orchestra of birds and frogs. Then come boating groups from local schools and in the evenings the waters are criss-crossed by canoeists.

Apart from the array of non-motorised water sports and fishing (carp, big-mouthed bass, tilapia and barbel abound), Shongweni also has picnic sites, walking trails and even rock climbing on its dramatic sandstone cliffs. Game drives, guided walks and canoes can be booked at reception. The drives are surprisingly fruitful and this relatively small, 1700-hectare reserve is split into two, with the latter home to a wide variety of big game including white rhino, buffalo and giraffe.

2. Inanda Dam

There is a 2,5-kilometre walking trail in the Mahlabathini Reserve that takes you through forest and grassland where there’s a good chance of spotting duiker and zebra. Cyclists looking for a challenge can try the 90-kilometre mountain-bike trail around the dam or relax beside the braai at one of the picnic sites that dot the water’s edge (bring your own grid).

Canoe hire: R165 per day. Fishing permits: R35 per day per adult and R17.50 per child. Inanda Dam campsite: msinsi.co.za , R110 per person per night (without electrical hook-ups) and R130 per person per night (with electrical hook-ups). Inanda Dam tented camp: Accommodation in the four-sleeper safari-style tented camps (with en-suite bathrooms and self-catering kitchens) costs R1200 per night for the unit. Tel 031 766 9946.

3. Wagendrift Nature Reserve

Further up the N3, I headed for Wagendrift , an attractive reserve set in the rolling grassveld backed by Drakensberg ramparts. The park gets its name from a ford in the Bushman’s River that was used by the transport wagons of old on their journey from Port Natal to the Witwatersrand goldfields.

To the west, the jagged Drakensberg skyline rises from the horizon. The area around the dam with the campsite has little game but good birding, and the second section known as Moor Park Reserve has good numbers of wildebeest, antelope, mountain reedbuck and is great for hiking (no dangerous game).

Boating is the main activity (the Bushman’s Boating Club has its club house in the reserve). Fishing is popular with scaly, bluegill, bass, carp and eel constituting the main catches. There is also the 3,5-kilometre, self-guided Furrow Trail in Moor Park. It follows the Bushman’s River through a wooded kloof and beside an irrigation furrow built in 1903.

4. Spioenkop Nature Reserve

I continued up the N3, bound for Spioenkop . The reserve lies west of the highway on the R600 about 14 kilometres from Winterton. Spioenkop Mountain dominates the reserve, standing tall over thorn savanna and valley bushveld. From its summit, spectacular Drakensberg views extend from Giant’s Castle to the Sentinel in Royal Natal National Park . Below, the mirror-calm Spioenkop Dam is dotted with picnic sites and the Discovery walking trail (which splits into a three-and six-kilometre loop) winds its way around the dam’s southern shore in an area free of dangerous game (although it is not fenced). There’s also horse riding and anglers can fish the reservoir from boats or the shore. Elsewhere in the reserve wildlife is abundant and includes white rhinoceros, giraffe and a wide variety of plains and bushveld antelope.

5. Weenen Game Reserve

From Spioenkop, the northernmost point on my route, I headed back down the N3 and took a left to Weenen . This lesser-known reserve lies 25 kilometres northeast of Estcourt in undulating thornveld that stretches to the blue-hilled horizon.

Although the gravel roads inside the park can be a bit rough for sedans, especially after heavy rains (ask at reception about road conditions), the terrain and birding certainly make up for any shortage of dramatic sightings.

There is also the gorgeous, three-kilometre Beacon View Trail that takes you to the edge of an escarpment that drops away into the Bushman’s River Valley. Sunrises are spectacular and watching the rays pierce through the mist tendrils that still linger in the leafy kloofs is a sight worth getting up early for.

All too soon my time was up and the big smoke beckoned. I re-joined my old friend the N3 and trundled back to Durban. A week of driving through western KwaZulu-Natal’s smaller parks produced a surprising result: there are petite tracts out there that provide rustic, no-fuss nature escapes, all for under R400 per person per night.

And sure, they may not have the clout of KwaZulu-Natal’s bigger parks, but there’s plenty in reply when nature calls.

About Wagendrift Nature Reserve

Situated on the other side of the N3 from Estcourt , Wagendrift Nature Reserve surrounds the dam of the same name. With a resident yacht club, and popular for boating and fishing, the pretty Wagendrift reserve is 980 hectares of beautiful scenery, quiet, time out and a three kilometre self-guided trail along the Bushman's River.

Did you know? The rock art of the Drakensberg is the largest and most concentrated group of rock paintings in Africa south of the Sahara and is outstanding both in quality and diversity of subject.

As its name suggests, Wagendrift Nature Reserve is so called after a drift through the Bushman's River favoured by transport wagons en route to Witwatersrand from Port Natal, where gold fields attracted many people at the time.

On Makhabeni Hill, overlooking Moor Park, which is included in the parameters of Wagendrift Nature Reserve, one has a bird's eye view of an Iron Age site dating back to AD 1300, one of the oldest in KwaZulu-Natal , where there are large fossil beds lying exposed, as well as fossilised trees - anyone even vaguely interested in archaeology will find this a hidden treasure.

And if that does not grab your attention, then the bird life most certainly will as you're almost assured of sighting a fish eagle or a black eagle whilst you are here, particularly if fishing for one of the number of fish species commonly caught here, such as bass, carp, bluegill, eel and sometimes trout.

And the historic town of Estcourt too is worth a visit, not only for its access to the World Heritage Site of Ukhahlamba Park, but also for its access to the Weenen Game Reserve , and the Thukela Biosphere - a joint conservation and community initiative.

It has an array of historical and cultural attractions from the Anglo-Boer War, various museums and other places of note including the Augustinian Chapel built in 1929 and the first government school, built in 1886 located in Alexandra Street and still used today as a school.

Wagendrift Nature Reserve and Dam, Escourt

Wagendrift Dam and Moor Park Nature Reserve is situated just off the N3 highway, near Estcourt. The Reserve is roughly 980 square Kilometers, in extent and includes a popular picnic and fishing spot. An Iron Age site dating back to AD 1300 is found on Makhabeni Hill overlooking; Moor Park and is listed as the first known Iron-Age Settlement in Southern Africa. On the Southern side of the Dam, there are large fossil beds with many fossilised trees lying exposed at ground level. As its name suggests, Wagendrift Nature Reserve is so called after a Drift through the Bushman's River favoured by transport wagons on route to Witwatersrand from Port Natal, where gold fields attracted many people at the time. On Makhabeni Hill, overlooking Moor Park, which is included in the parameters of Wagendrift Nature Reserve, one has a bird's eye view of an Iron Age site dating back to AD 1300, one of the oldest in KwaZulu-Natal, where there are large fossil beds lying exposed, as well as fossilised trees - anyone even vaguely interested in archaeology will find this a hidden treasure. Wagendrift Dam is a picturesque dam named after a drift through the Bushman's River used by transport wagons on their to the Witwatersrand goldfields. The Dam is surrounded by the Wagendrift Reserve and is a protected Area! Boating and fishing are the main activities. There is a 3 km self-guided Trail along the Bushman's River. Found here are; Fish Eagle and Black Eagle, which nest in the reserve. Species of fish include bluegill, bass, carp, eel and the occasional trout.

Terms and Conditions The person whose name appears on the Terms and Conditions form agrees to take full responsibility for ensuring that all members of the party adhere to the Conditions of Let set out below. In these Conditions of Let, “Owner” refers to the owner of the property you are booking, “Property” refers to the flatlet, cottage or room you are booking. 1. The number of people occupying any one Property is limited to that stated in the brochure or website, unless by prior consent with the Owner. 2. The balance of the booking is payable on arrival. Failure to pay the balance of rental charges, or failure to allow the Owner to take the balance by credit card on arrival, will result in the Owner treating the Property as available for re-booking. No reminders are sent out. 4. Should the Property, subsequent to booking, become unavailable through any cause, the Owner’s has the right to cancel the booking. 5. No Smoking inside the units. 6. You accept that the responsibility for personal property of guests occupying the accommodation is solely theirs. All vehicles are also left at the guests’ risk. Guests agree to absolve the Owner of any responsibility for any accident or mishap to persons or property whilst on the premises or whilst engaged in any activity therein, or from any illness or injury arising from any causes whatsoever. 7. You agree to use the Property solely for its intended purpose as self-catering accommodation and to accept the Owner’s right to refuse to hand over the Property to any person deemed unsuitable to take charge. Causing a nuisance or disturbance to neighbours or other guests, unreasonable behavior or disrupting the running of the property may result in the Owner requesting you to leave. 8. You agree to allow the Owners or agents access to the Property at all reasonable times. We will only ever request access to your property in case of an emergency, e.g. a water leak. 9. You must respect and look after your accommodation during your stay. Please let us know of any damage or breakages so we can repair or replace them for the next guests. We reserve the right to charge for any damage or breakages. 10. As the use of your own personal electrical equipment is out of our control it must be at your own personal risk. 11. The Hirer shall not sub-let the premises or any part thereof. 12. The number of people occupying the premises shall not exceed the number stated for the premises. 13. The Hirer binds and obliges himself to vacate the hired premises without demand at the termination of the period of hire. 14. The Hirer undertakes to leave the hired premises secure if left unoccupied during the period of let. 15. You must vacate the Property by 11am at the latest on your day of departure unless special arrangements have been made with the Owner. This is to allow us to prepare the Property for the next guests. 16. Guest arrival time is from 3pm onwards.
