‘Travel Man’: Why You Should Be Watching This Delightful British Series

travel man 3

Ever wonder what it’s like to journey to Paris for the weekend, or even Marrakesh? Well, you can find out by tuning into the delightful British travel series, Travel Man , which airs on the UK’s Channel 4, and is now streaming on Hulu.

Currently there are 7 seasons available with 34 episodes ripe for your bingeing pleasure. Travel Man is hosted by Richard Ayoade, the former It Crowd star who is widely popular over in Britain, as he invites famous pals to accompany him in each 23-minute episode — with the exception of two double-length holiday installments.

Why 'The Chef Show' Is Your Next Feel Good Binge

Why 'The Chef Show' Is Your Next Feel Good Binge

Every episode features a new city, new activities and much more, and Ayoade’s travel companions have ranged from Chris O’Dowd , Paul Rudd and Jon Hamm to Rebel Wilson and Lena Dunham . Most of his guests are directly from his neck of the woods, so their star power may be lost on some viewers less familiar with the Brits.

Premiering in 2015, the series is an offshoot format of another program Ayoade hosted — Gadget Man . The comedian, actor, director, writer and TV host also hosts Britain’s popular game show The Crystal Maze , and that’s where I initially noted Ayoade’s quick humor.

After researching the game show ahead of its Nickelodeon release this year with American host  Adam Conover , a coworker suggested I check out  Travel Man for more hilarious banter. And there certainly is plenty of it for viewers to enjoy as the subjects eat up the sights and sounds of cities such as Brussels, Ibiza, Hong Kong, Miami, Moscow, Paris, Florence, Valencia and Dubai to name a few.

Along with sharing travel costs, from flight and hotel to transport in the city, this series is user-friendly and makes you really consider the possibilities of exploring travel options, especially when they’re calculated for a comfortable two-day time period. As well as visiting and admiring the most popular sights and locations in featured cities, Ayoade and his guests often partake in various excursions, meals, and tours that aren’t always conventional.

One particularly hilarious adventure included Ayoade and comedian Sara Pascoe’s time in Valencia, Spain where they visited the City of Arts and Sciences’ cultural and architectural complex (this also happens to be a filming location for the upcoming third season of Westworld ). While there, they partook in a brief time encased in giant plastic bubbles as they floated on the water feature.

The activity — which is called zorbing — will have you in hysterics as they try to right themselves in the unstable capsule. “Have you zorbed before?” Richard asks Sara.

“I never have, have you? Are you into it?” Sara asks in return.

As Ayoade answers, he says, “For a claustrophobic, it’s a dream” — just a small taste of his sarcastic sense of humor. While that’s just one excursion taken, others that can be seen in accompanying episodes are museum tours, ice skating, sledding, whale watching, gladiator class, cooking classes and more.

Whether you’re aware of Ayoade’s pop culture presence or not, you’re likely to be charmed by his polite sarcasm and his myriad of adventuring companions. Even if you aren’t looking to jetset anytime soon,  Travel Man immerses you just enough to feel like you’ve had a getaway of your own, and isn’t that what TV’s all about?

While there are only 7 seasons available on Hulu, there are eight additional episodes that haven’t been added to the streamer as of yet. For now, enjoy the installments currently available, and see if you can find some travel inspiration of your own.

Travel Man: Richard Ayoade and friends are hilarious tour guides for a travel-less world

A travel TV show might sound like salt in the wound in the time of coronavirus – but featuring Jon Hamm, Lena Dunham, Paul Rudd and Stephen Merchant, this one is infectious and fun

Read more in The good place series

In our new series Stream Team, Guardian Australia’s arts writers dig out their favourite hidden gems of streaming to help you while away some isolated hours.

In this new age of closed borders and grounded flights, a lot of us are going to be turning to travel shows – and realising that most are in the business of lying to you. “The flight is just a quick hop across the Pacific!” says a persimon-coloured woman in white linen. “It’s a luxury hotel – but it’s surprisingly affordable!!” says a man wearing tan chinos and dress shoes on the beach.

Travel Man – which has seasons streaming on SBS On Demand – is one of the very few that shows travel for what it is: simultaneously the very best and absolute worst thing you can do.

“The mini-break is a noodley soup of nincompoopery,” says long-time host Richard Ayoade in one episode.

“To mini-break is to prise open the crack of crazy, behind which lurks the absurd notion of leaving your house, certain motion sickness, and the terrifying prospect of interacting with other cultures,” he says in another.

At the start of each show he stands, stiff and sceptical, in the middle of a dazzling European city and says: “We’re here – but should we have come?”

Travel Man has been a hit in the UK since 2015, but I only discovered it in the past year or so while shuffling through On Demand. In each 30-minute episode, Ayoade (comedian, writer, director, and most famously Moss from The IT Crowd ) pairs up with a different celebrity for a 48-hour mini-break. They explore a city, try the local food, hit the tourist spots and very begrudgingly have a good time.

In anyone else’s hands that would get tedious (see: An Idiot Abroad ), but Ayoade is so infectiously kind that even his outright cynicism comes across as fun. He’s loquacious, neurotic and witty about the silly joys and annoyances of travel.

The show’s at its best when he’s paired with someone who knows how to bounce off that extremely British tendency to complain. Not surprisingly, some of the best episodes are the ones with his mates.

In Copenhagen, Ayoade and Mighty Boosh co-star Noel Fielding drink schnapps and have cute antics at Tivoli amusement park. When Ayoade complains, Fielding smiles and says, “I thought this was going to be a holiday – not one of your weird, anally retentive fright-fests”.

The episode in Vienna with The IT Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd is also worth a watch – if only for this scene in a snowglobe store.

Other celebrities featured on the show include Dawn French, Stephen Merchant, Rob Delaney and Australia’s Adam Hills – all big names in UK comedy. But another, somewhat more unlikely, match is US actor Jon Hamm.

In a longer Christmas episode, Hamm and Ayoade travel to Hong Kong and get foot massages, buy tailored pink and red velvet suits, and practice tai chi. Other Americans (see: Lena Dunham ) are a bit too flat and earnest, but Hamm (and Paul Rudd, who also appears on the show ) has a big goofy energy that offsets Ayoade’s deadpan charm.

A travel show might sound like a frustrating watch right now. I get that. Some of the most renowned tourist sites in the world are ghost towns, and you’re more likely to be grieving a cancelled trip right now than planning a new one. But as your whole world shrinks to the size of your lounge room, it’s important to remember that this isn’t permanent. This will pass. There will be more trips to plan.

For now, all we can do is look out to the other side: to a time when you can jet off to explore the world with your closest friends, and inevitably complain about motion sickness and lines and prices and sore feet the whole time.

Travel Man’s Best Episodes: feat. Bob Mortimer at the E Numbers Museum and the Happiest Richard Ayoade Has Ever Been

Mawaan Rizwan and Joe Lycett wearing Dry Robes in Dublin for Channel 4 series Travel Man

Since 2015, there’s been no need to go on a minibreak to a cultural European destination. Richard Ayoade and Joe Lycett have gone for us. They’ve waited at airport security lines displaying their miniature toothpaste tube in a clear plastic bag. They’ve bought mystery crisps from railway vending machines. They’ve been to the museums, tried the local delicacies and gone on the sightseeing tours, so that we could stay luxuriously put.

Indeed, for a good chunk of 2020, staying put was the only option, which is when Travel Man: 48 Hours In… really came into its own. During lockdown, you could spin the globe, choose a location, load up All4 (as it was then known), and have a packed weekend there from the comfort of your sofa. All the experience of short haul travel with none of the having-to-mime-migraine-symptoms-to-a-Hungarian-pharmacist. Bliss!

Now Travel Man: 48 Hours In… is back with four new Joe Lycett-fronted episodes starting on Friday March 22 at 8.30 p.m. on Channel 4 and Channel 4.com. Joe’s guests this time around are comedians Alan Davies, Desiree Burch, Adam Buxton and Jessica Fostekew. While Davies, Burch and Fostekew are all Travel Man first-timers, this is a repeat visit for Adam Buxton, who also went with Richard Ayoade to Lisbon back in 2016.

Respectively, the new travel guests are being taken to Italy’s Trieste, Finland’s Rovaniemi, Czechia’s Prague, and the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Expect a visit to the wind museum, scenes of eating sausages out of skulls, volcanic wine and some sleigh-riding (not necessarily in that order).

Ad – content continues below

To celebrate the show’s return, let’s salute some of its most entertaining trips from previous series.

10. Hamburg with Bob Mortimer

Adding “…with Bob Mortimer ” to anything makes it better. (Try it. The One Show… With Bob Mortimer. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire… With Bob Mortimer. Year 10 Parents’ Evening… With Bob Mortimer.) That’s definitely the case on this 48-hour stint in Hamburg, the high point of which has to be the visit to the German Food Additives Museum. It starts off niche, and just gets more niche from there as Mortimer encourages Ayoade to ingest out-of-date E numbers. A solid best-of list entry.

9. Amsterdam with Joe Lycett

Here’s the point at which Travel Man ’s producers must have scribbled down the note ‘ Joe Lycett – new host if Richard leaves?’ The two have more in common than you may think – they’re both sardonic clothes horses who run on irony – but while Ayoade’s persona leaves little room to express genuine delight, Lycett is a joy machine. We see it here when he’s confronted by a Dutch street organ that plays Wham. Immediately, he starts to jig, hands held aloft screaming “I feel so alive!”, while Ayoade nods along barely perceptibly. A strong audition for the main part.

8. Moscow with Greg Davies

Worthy of celebration solely for the local outfit Greg Davies wears at the traditional steam bath: a kind of toga worn with – as the Taskmaster describes it – a hat that makes him look like a sinister children’s character. Add to the outfit the ‘being whipped by two men using birch branches’ treatment that Davies volunteers to undergo, and we are entertained. See also: space food.

7. Split with Aisling Bea

This is Aisling Bea’s second time as a guest on the show and both are good fun, but this pips the other because it features what is officially the most adorable Travel Man sequence of all time: Bea and Joe Lycett walking extremely sweet rescue dogs from a local animal shelter along a dedicated dog beach. As Lycett puts it, “it’s the cutest day I’ve ever had and that’s saying a lot.” If a tiny puppy stand-up paddle-boarding doesn’t do it for you, then there’s also strudel-rolling, a fish cookery class, and a museum of frog taxidermy that genuinely makes you worry for humanity. Clearly mates who get on, these two are great company.

6. Copenhagen with Noel Fielding

The happiest Goth on Earth in the happiest place on Earth? That’s what you get with Noel Fielding in the Danish capital. The Mighty Boosh star giggles his way through open sandwiches, bakery windows, a beer museum and a tiny rollercoaster. They both love the fairground, and both appear to provoke genuine antipathy from their cycling tour leader Mike the Bike (he doesn’t like trouble), who makes every effort to ditch them mid-tour. The chemistry is good, the mood is… as relaxed as Richard Ayoade appears to get (key quote from Fielding: “I thought this was going to be a holiday, not one of your weird, anally retentive fright-fests.”) And they’ll always have Galoppen.

5. Berlin with Roisin Conaty

In which: they travel in a jazz lift, very much almost die on the road in what was voted the World’s Worst Car of 1975, improvise a blues jam session, and go to a bowling alley. Not a bowling alley but a kegelbahen, where Richard Ayoade appears to reveal genuine anger and a surprisingly intense competitive streak (plus a serviceable Daniel Day Lewis impersonation) when he refuses to leave until he gets a strike.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Comedian, writer and actor Roisin Conaty makes an excellent audience for Ayoade’s patter, awkward Kula Shaker jokes, and the break’s Cold War theme in general. He’s great, she’s great, and it just works.

4. Hong Kong with Jon Hamm

An extended-length Christmas special, this is a joy of an hour. Watch as the former star of Mad Men and the former host of The Crystal Maze take a ludicrously short journey in a Rolls Royce, have their portraits ripped out of paper by an artist named “Uncle Man”, and get a foot massage – or, as Ayoade describes it, “an onslaught of unparalleled brutality”. (Squirming and grimacing under the touch of his masseur and telling him to stay the heck away is as aggressive as you’ll see the man). The best bit? When they get measured for dandy bespoke suits with which they are clearly – and rightly – overjoyed.

3. Ibiza with Jessica Knappett

Companionable banter is all very well, but sometimes it’s fun to witness a clash of personalities so extreme you wonder if it’ll end in violence. And that clash isn’t just Ayoade (sardonic, reserved) vs Knappett (wahey-the-lads! ‘BEEFA), but Ayoade vs Ibiza itself. Put simply, the party island/hippy hangout is his nightmare, and this episode features genuine appeals to camera for rescue. From what? From a gong bath, a surfing machine, the hotel where Wham’s Club Tropicana video was filmed, and from a hotel manager who insists on taking them to a place “where membership is a smiling face.” Despite Knappett’s appeals for Ayoade to have an open mind and go with the flow, his mind remains resolutely closed and stressed, and it’s quite a lot of fun to watch.

2. Miami with Rhod Gilbert

There’s no personality clash here. Ayoade and Gilbert are like two complementary grape varieties blended into the same refreshingly dry wine. It’s a wine that you’d think would be too acerbic for Miami’s brand of relaxed Cuban cool, but you’d be wrong. Humidity aside, they both have a great time on the Florida coast. They eat crab meat lollipops that cause Ayoade to break out in a spontaneous smile, and which Gilbert describes as the most amazing meal he’s ever had in his life. They wear crab bibs, are rubbish at beach yoga, nervous of alligators, live it up at a domino game and sip drink thick, sweet coffee and freshly squeezed juice you feel like you can taste. A beautiful combination.

1. Vienna with Chris O’Dowd

The best Travel Man episodes are the ones where chemistry between host and guest really chimes, and here, it’s unimprovable. This trip to Vienna with his The IT Crowd co-star Chris O’Dowd is the happiest Richard Ayoade has ever looked on screen – possibly the happiest he’s ever been in life? Perhaps that’s down to the relief of not having been the one to have accidentally smashed a snow globe in Vienna’s national snow globe museum (O’Dowd is now banned from Austria). Or perhaps he’s just relaxed, having fun and enjoying making his pal laugh over partially fermented grape juice and cheesy sausage. They eat apple strudel, drive hotrods, explore the sewers and ride a Ferris wheel as part of a locations tour for The Third Man , and generally have a lovely, lovely time.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Dublin with Mawaan Rizwan who is cute as a button and really did not enjoy wild swimming.

Milan with Morgana Robinson whose superior pasta-making skills leave Ayoade humiliated.

Iceland with Bill Bailey for boiling eggs in a geyser, the Icelandic punk jam and the hot tub hats.

Stockholm with Sally Phillips for Ayoade’s obvious discomfort and Phillips’ obvious joy at the ABBA museum.

Porto with Nish Kumar for Nish’s excitement about his religious wax buttocks.

Dubrovnik with Stephen Merchant for them going on the Game of Thrones locations tour without having seen Game of Thrones .

Travel Man: 48 Hours In… airs on Fridays at 8.30pm on Channel 4. All episodes are available to stream in the UK on Channel4.com . Series one to seven are available to stream on Plex and Prime Video in the US.

Having conquered the world of technology in Gadget Man, acclaimed Director, Author and BAFTA-winning actor Richard Ayoade deserves a break. But there’s a problem; he hates going on holiday. For Richard, travel is boring and stressful and takes far too long. Surely there must be a way to make it more fun, more efficient, and less tedious? ‘Travel Man’ is Richard’s chance to show us where we’re going wrong by having the most culturally efficient holiday possible, with all the boring bits taken out.

Man wears Scream mask to collect lottery prize so family won't know about his win

T he experience of winning the lottery is transformative, but not all winners are keen to broadcast their newfound wealth. This was the case for one lucky man who pulled out all the stops to keep his massive win secret.

In 2019, an individual who won Jamaica's Super Lotto devised a clever costume to collect his earnings without revealing his identity. Outfitted in a Scream mask, long coat, trousers and gloves, the winner, known only as A Campbell, took home a whopping $158 million in Jamaican dollars -- approximately $1.2m in US dollars.

His imaginative disguise allowed him to maintain his anonymity following the tremendous win. Campbell discovered his victory when Supreme Ventures, the organizing body of the game across multiple Caribbean islands, announced that the 90-day window to claim the prize was quickly closing, reports the Mirror US .

Aunt tells nephew 'I'll see you in court' moments after posing with $1.2m lottery check

Francis Coppola's Godfather could get an update

On day 54, Campbell realized he held the golden ticket. Speaking with Loop Jamaica, he recounted his exhilaration, stating: "I looked at my ticket and ran into my bathroom and said, 'I won! I won! '"

However, comprehending his immense luck seemed to have physical consequences. "From the day I found out that I won, I've been sick. My head hurt me for three days because I was thinking so much. [Wondering] if what I've been longing for really come true. I had a belly ache for two weeks, sometimes I feel so much pain I forgot that I had won," he said.

Campbell intends to use his winnings to purchase a new house, sharing: "I want to get a nice house. I haven't found it yet, but I'll be looking for one soon. I like to handle money. I don't beg, I don't borrow.

"So I'm looking at things that can turn over the money. I have a little business, so I plan to make it bigger, buy an apartment. I love to have money."

Willie Seeley, another lottery winner who shared in a $450million Powerball jackpot, later regretted the public attention his win attracted.

Body recovered from Colorado River over 2 weeks after man, dog vanish with homemade raft in Grand Canyon

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 10:58 AM EDT / CBS/AP

The body of a New Mexico man  has been recovered from the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park more than two weeks after he disappeared with his dog, authorities said Monday.

National Park Service personnel were notified Friday about a body being spotted in the river. Authorities said the body appears to that of 58-year-old Thomas L. Robison of Santa Fe.

Park officials said Robison was believed to have attempted to travel down the river with his dog on a wooden raft. Officials previously released a photo of the raft that it is believed Robison used, showing just a few long planks assembled together, along with a paddle and life vest.

Robison had abandoned his vehicle at  Lees Ferry , a fishing and boat launching point in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The site is often used as a launch for whitewater rafting trips along the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, according to park officials.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner will confirm positive identification of the body.

The National Park Service and medical examiner's office are investigating.

The Colorado River runs nearly 1,500 miles, from the Rocky Mountains to Mexico,  according to American Rivers , a site that catalogues information about the nation's waterways. In the Grand Canyon, the river continues to deepen and widen in the national landmark,  according to the NPS . Whitewater rafting is common in the river.

A body located in Arizona waters at the Grand Canyon last week appears to belong to a person who disappeared as he traveled down the Colorado River with his dog on a wooden raft, the National Park Service is reporting.

Thomas L. Robison, 58, of Santa Fe, New Mexico vanished April 21 on the reported excursion, according to the NPS, which released an update on Monday.

NPS personnel were notified on Friday of a body in the river near mile six, the agency announced. Responding rangers recovered the body and transported it to Lees Ferry , a boat launch point at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, then to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff.

"Initial information indicates the body is that of missing person Thomas L. Robison," the agency wrote in its statement.

Robison was reported missing last month . His vehicle, officials said, was found abandoned at Lees Ferry.

Autopsy to determine man's cause of death

The county medical examiner was working to officially identity the victim and determine their cause and manner of death, authorities said.

The case remained under investigation on Wednesday by NPS and local authorities.

Mississippi Man Sentenced After Pleading Guilty to Interstate Travel for the Purpose of Engaging in Illicit Sexual Conduct with Fourteen-Year-Old Girl

NEW ORLEANS – U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that ERIC SCOTT ALFORD , age 38, a resident of Clinton, Mississippi, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Barry W. Ashe to 46 months in prison followed by 5 years of supervised release, after previously pleading guilty to interstate travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2423(b).  Judge Ashe further required ALFORD to comply with sex offender registration requirements and to pay $5,100 in assessments.

According to court documents, on about July 26, 2023, ALFORD , an adult male, contacted an undercover law enforcement officer purporting to be an adult female with a fourteen-year-old daughter (FA1) on a social network and messaging application designed for individuals  interested in various “kink,” “fetish,” and alternative sexual practices. ALFORD asked what “kinks” FA1 had.  On multiple occasions, over the next several days, in his correspondence with FA1, ALFORD expressed a desire and intent to engage in various forms of sexual contact with FA1 and her fourteen-year-old daughter, both individually and collectively, including by providing graphic descriptions of the sexual acts.  ALFORD also frequently discussed and planned face-to-face meetings with FA1 and her daughter to engage in sexual acts with each of them, including suggesting that they travel to ALFORD’s residence.  Separately, ALFORD communicated via an instant messaging application directly with who he believed to be FA1’s minor daughter.  During that conversation, ALFORD again described sexual acts he intended to perform on and with FA1 and the child, individually and collectively.

On August 2, 2023, ALFORD told FA1’s minor daughter that he was traveling to Hammond, Louisiana that evening to engage first in sex acts with FA1 and then to engage in sex acts with both FA1 and her daughter.  That evening, ALFORD   drove from Flowood, Mississippi to Hammond, Louisiana, in furtherance of his intent to engage in sexual acts with FA1 and her minor daughter.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.  Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.

U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the United States Department of Homeland Security - Homeland Security Investigations and the Louisiana Bureau of Investigations in investigating this matter.  Assistant United States Attorney Jordan Ginsberg, Chief of the Public Integrity Unit, was in charge of the prosecution.

Are Travel Sports Destroying Family Life?

  • From The Kitchen Table

Teamwork is a great skill for kids to learn, which is why many parents opt to put their children in sports at a young age. However, the emergence of highly competitive, travel sports has infiltrated the traditional family unit–from chaotic schedules to egregious expenses. So, what happens when the child, who’s dedicated their entire life and identity to this sport, ultimately gives it up?

Author of Family Unfriendly: How Our Culture Made Raising Kids Much Harder Than It Needs to Be and father of six, Timothy Carney  provides insight on how he believes modern society is placing unrealistic pressure on both parents and children, making parenting much harder than it needs to be (and creating highly anxious families).
