A Guide to Granada for Muslim Travellers

Ismaeel elkhateeb shares his guide to granada for muslim travellers.

At the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, in Spain’s Andalusia province, sits the historic city of Granada. For almost 250 years, between 1238 and 1492, the city, then part of the Nasrid Kingdom, stood as the last remaining Muslim stronghold in the peninsula. Under the Nasrids, it became a hub for economic prosperity, cultural influence and intellectual development.

A Brief History

Muslims first appeared in Granada in 711 AD, several centuries before its ‘golden age’ initiated by Mohammed ibn Yusuf ibn Nasr, who founded the Emirate in 1230. Granada’s Muslim identity took shape following the collapse of Muslim Cordoba and Seville to the Catholic armies in the north. With the stellar Alhambra watching over it, it became one of the richest cities in Europe, replete with intellectuals, artisans, and traders.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

Like with many empires throughout history, infighting would eventually lead to the collapse of the Nasrid Dynasty, and the Catholic Monarchs of the north, who were able to take full advantage of their weakened state, finally put an end to the last remaining Muslim Emirate. Granda was surrendered in 1492.

My wife and I were in Cordoba for two nights prior to arriving in Granada. We spent 10 days touring the three major cities that comprised Al-Andalus. This was our first trip to Spain, and we made it a priority to visit the Andalusian south over the typical stops of Madrid or Barcelona. Granada captured our hearts from the moment we arrived. As I imagined it would have been like in the old Nasrid Kingdom, the streets were bustling with ornate shops with an inviting ambience late into the night. Both tourists and locals shopped around the city, particularly in the historic Albayzín (or Albaicin) district, and dined in the many Spanish and Moroccan restaurants on offer.

The legacy of the Nasrids can be seen (and heard) around the city; in it’s architecture and historical sites, its cuisine and even parts of the language that contains numerous words derived from Arabic. Recent years have seen a revival of sorts of Granada’s Islamic heritage- a heritage that Queen Isabella and her successors had tried to bury. Alongside an increase in tourism to sites like the Alhambra, older, lesser known ones are being restored, and in the past 15 years, the city has even seen the building of two new mosques (the first in 500 years).

Albayzín District

When we weren’t sightseeing, we spent most of our time in the Albayzín district, city’s old Arab quarter, which today is home to a sizeable Muslim population of primarily Moroccan descent (hence the many Moroccan restaurants on offer). Still maintaining the same maze of narrow streets from the Nasrid period, this lively neighbourhood is the place to be for some of the best dining, shopping, and (Moroccan) tea experiences. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its Hispano-Muslim architecture is considered some of the best-preserved in southern Spain.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

The Moroccan tea houses (that we frequented as often as we could) boasted some of the most intricate geometric designs we came across in Spain. With windows and doors flung open late into the summer night, it was as though each tea house competed for customers through its extravagant decor.

Mezquita Mayor de Granada

Fortunately for us, we happened to be in Granada on a Friday, which was the perfect opportunity to visit the first mosque of the city since the late 1400s. Though built in 2003, with its traditional architectural features it could pass as a historic mosque from the Andalusian period. The building blends in pretty seamlessly with the surrounding neighbourhood. We walked in just as Juma prayer was about to begin.

Granada mosque

TIP: The best way to get to the mosque from the Gran Via de Colon, Granada’s main and busiest street, is to catch one of the many red minibuses which will take you uphill through very narrow streets until you arrive.

Granada mosque

As we walked in, we saw a beautiful marble-laden garden with a fountain at its centre, along with an unobstructed view of the coveted Alhambra. Entering the mezquita, we were first met with its courtyard, leading us into the prayer area itself. The mosque’s attendees were a mix of international tourists as well as locals who worked nearby. The interior of the building was a mosaic of influences from around the Muslim world. The mihrab is an exact replica of the one in the Great Mosque of Cordoba; the marble tiles are identical to those at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Palestine, while the windows are a replica of those in the Sultanahmet Mosque of Istanbul. Most interesting of all, the fountain in the courtyard was designed by a master craftsman from Fes, following a millennia-old Andalusian design.

Granada mosque

Following the sermon, which was delivered in Arabic and then repeated in Spanish, we prayed and headed to the courtyard to enjoy the view on the sunny day, while many others lingered around, enjoying cold drinks from the vending machine.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

TIP: Many guides, tourists, and online recommendations will tell you to go to San Nicolas monastery for sunsets and views of the Alhambra. As it turns out, the mezquita is next to the monastery; it is far less crowded, and you get the same view of the Alhambra. However, be sure to check the opening hours for the mosque, as it is not always open and the gates for the courtyard will be locked.

There is at least one other working mosque in Granada, the Mezquita Shaykh bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, located on a side street in the Albayzin district.

Granada mosque

Palacio de la Madraza

In the heart of Granada, immediately beside the Royal Chapel of Granada (mausoleum of Isabella and Ferdinand) and the Granada Cathedral (on the site of a Nasrid era mosque), there is the Palacio de la Madraza- a testament to the cultural fusion of the region. The building exhibits Andalusian, Mudejar, and modern-day architectural styles. Built as a school and university in 1349 by Sultan Yusuf I, it remains under the ownership of an educational institution, Granada University.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

On the first floor there is a classic Andalusian style prayer hall with an intricately decorated mihrab, while Qur’anic verses and praises of God weave through the colourful mosaics. The ceiling is adorned with the classic wooden Mudejar style (post-Islamic Iberian style, strongly influenced by the Muslim period). At the time of Sultan Yusuf I, the university contained a library, bedrooms, and classrooms. The prayer hall is the only remaining room from the original structure. Under Christian rule, the room was hidden from view until restoration efforts in the 19 th century.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

As we made our way upstairs, we entered a modern-looking lecture hall called the Knights Room, which was used initially as a meeting room for the city council. The Mudejar style ceiling in this room is one of more notable of the period.

This is a great place to stop for only a couple of Euros and can be covered within half an hour. It is a testament to the resilience of Andalusian tradition, art and culture right in the heart of Granada, neighbouring the mausoleum of the Spanish conquerors who tried to erase it all.

Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo

A palace that predates the Alhambra, the Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo sets the architectural precedent for the fortress-complex. The Nasrid era palace (don’t let the name fool you) was built by Muhammed II from 1273-1302. Tucked away in the quiet neighborhood of Realejo-San Matias, only a fraction of the original palace remains today. As we were walking in the area, many residents seemed unaware of its existence when we asked for directions, largely because the palace was buried, figuratively and literally, until recent years. After the fall of the Nasrid Kingdom it ended up in the hands of the Catholic monarchs who then handed it off to the Dominican Order, a Catholic religious order founded by Spanish priest, Dominic de Guzman. Eventually, it fell into private hands where most of the structure was demolished.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

In the last few decades, Spanish archeologists began restoration efforts to recover what little was left of the palace. A garden courtyard exists today with the intent of replicating the shape and style of the garden that existed in the Nasrid era; it is laid out on the site of the original.

Andalusia Tour 2024

Located in a residential area and with free admission, we noticed some families with children (and a few stray cats) playing in the garden. It is a beautiful, serene place to spend some time and reflect on the extensive history that has passed through this quaint part of town.

Finally, no trip to Granada is complete without its main attraction. Although the city has a lot to offer, the Alhambra is undoubtedly its crown jewel. It is the most visited monument in the entire country, with over 8,500 daily visitors. Built in the 8 th century, it was the last remaining royal structure of Islamic civilisation in Western Europe, with the Nasrid Muslims as its final occupants. Its name, derived from the redness of the walls, is written along the museum entrance in Arabic: الحمراء. Along with the Albayzin district, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

The complex is massive, and one can easily get lost. A city in itself, it was expanded numerous times and each ruler left their own mark; Charles V even built his own palace within the compound in the post-Nasrid era.

We began by making our way to the Generalife, the famous gardens of the compound, consisting of flowers, a beautiful maze of carved shrubs, and fountains. We then headed towards the Nasrid palaces, the main attraction of the Alhambra. We had booked our time slot in advance online and arrived a few minutes before the scheduled time. We decided to go without a tour guide, though that option is of course available.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

The palaces were breathtaking, unlike anything I had ever seen before. The extreme attention to detail, the symmetry, the beautiful Quranic verses and perfect segue of outdoor courtyards and indoor chambers. Over the centuries, the Nasrid Palaces have maintained their distinct ‘Islamic’ identity. Despite the Catholic destruction of many parts of the Alhambra, French shelling in the 1800s, and total abandonment in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, the Nasrid Palaces remain very much intact. They are comprised of three separate buildings, called Mexuar, the Palaces of Comares, and the Palace of the Lions.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

Finally, we made our way to the oldest part of the Alhambra, Alcazaba. This is the original fortress that was built before the addition of palaces and gardens. The Nasrids used the fortress as a military base of the Royal Guard. There are several towers to climb, with each subsequent tower taller than the previous. From here, you get to see what the sultans themselves would have seen, the city of Granada in all its glory watched over by the majestic snow capped Sierra Nevada.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

Four hours and 25,000 steps later, we were ready to head out. Maghrib was approaching and the Alhambra was getting ready to close. We hopped on a red minibus and headed back into town where we finished off our exhausting but awe-inspiring day with a couple of kebap sandwiches from a Palestinian owned shop in the Albayzin.

Guide to Granada Muslim travellers

Granada has become one of my all-time favourite cities. One thing we noticed all over Andalusia, on historic sites, souvenirs, and in mosques was the phrase لا غالب إلا الله, meaning ‘There is no victor but God.’ The phrase is inscribed on the hallowed walls of the Alhambra and other palaces and mosques in Seville and Cordoba. That these structures still stand, centuries after the Muslims were expelled from Iberia, and history actively demolished and erased, is for me an affirmation of the truth of that phrase. Five centuries later, I am able to visit Granada as a Muslim. I can shop at local, Muslim-owned shops and dine at Muslim-owned restaurants. I can pray Juma at a beautiful mosque on a hilltop. I can converse with Moroccan locals in Arabic. Indeed, there is no victor but God.

Subhanallah, really liked your post.

I wish I could. Visit this beautiful mosque, I pray to God to give me time and other aids to prepare to visit this mosque. I read about Islamic history of Andalus and I cry and wish to vidit soon.

Salaam. Please could you let me know if there was many stray cats in Granada? I am extremely fearful of them and would like to avoid at all costs so would love to know if I will see many if I visit Granada?

In 1492, as Columbus was setting foot in North America, the Castilian Queen Isabella was waging the final stages of her war against Spain's Muslim rulers, the Moors, who had ruled for centuries from the walls of the Alhambra. After seeing the palaces and fortresses, your guide will show you the beautiful Generalife gardens where royalty spent their summers relaxing.

Guided Alhambra tour with fortresses and Nasrid Palaces

Guided tour of the Generalife gardens

Super-knowledgeable, English-speaking local guide

Meet Your Guide near the Alhambra Entrance

Your day begins at the entrance to the Alhambra where Muslim rulers began building fortifications as far back as the 8th Century AD. See the walls of the palatial complex as your friendly guide leads you inside, with skip-the-line tickets to avoid and waiting around.

Palace of the Lions and Palace Of The Comares

Over centuries, the Alhambra developed into the network of palaces and defensive structures we see today. Your guide will describe how, in the 13th century, the Nasrid dynasty was able to finally take control over competing factions leading to the rapid expansion of the area with opulence and grandeur.

Only two of the six palaces that stood in 1492 still survive in the Alhambra today. In the Palace of the Lions, your guide will first describe the emblematic statue of big cats centered in the palace's ornate courtyard. Learn why scholars to this day debate whether this palace was a learning center, mosque, or throne to victory.

Next, you'll explore the Palace of the Comares. Renovated by Muhammad V in the 14th century, Comares acted as the grand throne room for the Sultans. Entering from another one of the Alhambra's great courtyards, learn why you don't see an elaborate façade on this particular palace. Inside, see how the palace's designs represent the growing influence from Sufism and mysticism in the Sultan's court during the last century of their rule in Spain.

It's a stunning glimpse into the architecture and opulence that shaped the Alhambra and spread its influence across Andalusia and beyond.

Medieval Fortresses of the Alhambra

From the palaces, your guide will lead you to the defensive structures used to protect the city from invaders. At the Alcazaba, discover the oldest surviving structure atop Sabika Hill. Built in either the 9th or 10th century, your guide will tell impressive stories of this over 1,000 year old watch tower.

Although beautiful and ornate in so many ways, this part of the tour will remind you of the complex's primary purpose as a place of power and the number one target for invading armies.

Lavish Generalife Gardens

Down the road from the Nasrid Palaces, you'll find the majestic Generalife Gardens. Based in part on the Koranic depictions of heaven, the lush gardens and flowing fountains were a picturesque summer retreat for the Sultan and his family. Also serving as an orchard, the gardens were an oasis of tranquility among the palaces and fortresses of the Alhambra.

Though much of the structure caught fire in 1958 and had to be rebuilt, the most stunning aspect of the Generalife still stands. You can see the beautiful Water Staircase up close. The 4-story set of stairs with a flowing stream creates a sense of peace among the gardens that feels serene after hearing how this became a quiet refuge.

After exploring the gardens, your guide will wave goodbye and you can explore more independently or head down to the city to enjoy the gentle charms of Granada.

This morning you’ll arrive at Malaga Airport where our local guide will be waiting to greet you.

We’ll head straight out to take you for lunch (around 15€) before heading Ronda, where you’ll see the famous Puente Nuevo bridge .

From Ronda we’ll take a scenic route to the famous city of Seville, where our local guide will walk you through centuries of Islamic history. We’ll start at the Royal Alcazar , a Christian palace built by Muslim craftsmen with unique mudejar decoration. Our next stop will take you to the Giralda Tower , what once formed the minaret of the Mosque of Seville in 1182. Our final stop on our walking tour of Sevilla is the iconic Plaza España , where we’ll try to catch golden hour. You’ll then have some free time to explore the Muslim quarters before dinner.

Overnight in Sevilla.

Walking through the narrow-whitewashed streets of Cordoba feels like taking a step back in time. Today you’ll visit the gem of this city, which is also one of the oldest mosques in Europe. We’ll then take you to have a lunch inside a beautiful courtyard garden , Moorish style. Throughout the day our local guide will share the stories of the first Muslims in Spain , how they helped create a Golden Age of civilisation in the region before their expulsion by the Spanish inquisition.

You’ll have some free time to explore Cordoba’s meandering streets before we take you out for dinner in the countryside with a local Muslim family. Overnight in Cordoba.

You’ll have some time this morning to explore Cordoba at your leisure before we head out to explore a 1000-year-old gem.

The once sumptuous city of Madinat al Zahra is now only a shadow of its former grandeur, having  slept for almost 1000 years under layers of dirt.  The city was sacked in 1010, less than seventy years after it was built, and the beautiful furnishings – down to even the marble slabs – were stolen or quarried. This is the  largest city ever built from scratch  in Western Europe, but chances are you’ve never even heard of it. Overnight in Granada.

Today you’ll experience something only few people who have visited Spain been fortunate enough to experience.

Local expert and guide Yasin Maymir will host you in the Alhambra Palace, the most visited monument in Spain and the best Preserved Medieval Muslim  Royal Palace  in the World. Yasin will “ Read the Alhambra ” to you by following the Arabic inscriptions on the walls. The hidden meanings, du’a, Qur’an, and poetry inscribed on these walls make the Alhambra once of the most unique forms of Islamic architecture in the world.

This afternoon you’ll pray in the mosque of Granada and then some free time to explore the Albayzin, Granada’s old town. Overnight in Granada.

After Breakfast we will make our trip to the Alpujarra mountains , where the last Muslims of Al Andalus were living and practicing Islam for more than 150 years after the conquest of Granada. New Muslims are living here now, where they nurture olive plantations which produce olive oil for the whole year, with the same olives once planted by the Muslims of the past. You’ll visit the traditional village of Pampaneira , where you can explore the carpet-weavers workshop and Chocolate Factory, as well as roam through the traditional houses, streets and architecture of this village . After lunch you’ll be able to walk through Orange Orchards and Olive Trees , before heading to the local Masjid to pray and meet the local Muslims. Overnight in Granada.

Should you wish to extend your stay in Spain, let us know and we can assist you with accommodation, transport and anything else you require. Arrival time at Malaga airport is 9:30-10:00 am

In less than a hundred years since the Prophetic Hijrah, during the ‘Golden Age of Islam’ the vastness of the Islamic Empire expanded all the way to Europe. Muslims from North Africa, under the leadership of Tariq bin Ziyad, conquered Spain and brought along with them their system of governance and law as well as beautiful architecture and vibrant culture.

Journey with us and visit the Iberian Peninsula, Al-Andalusia, and explore the abundant Islamic history of Seville, Cordoba, Ronda, Granada and more. An 8-day tour bringing the history and heritage of Muslim Spain to life. See for yourself how over 700 years of Muslim rule left a legacy of Islamic Spain that remains today in the beautifully ornate mosques and palaces, as well as the rich local culture.

Seville houses one of the most famous and iconic remnants of Islamic Spain – the Real Alcazar, or Royal Alcazar – a remarkable palace built by the Muslim ruling class in the 8 th century. It is a fine and unique example of Mudéjar art – a style, deeply rooted in cultural diversity and originating from practising Muslims living in Christian territories in historical Spain.

Marvel at the Seville Cathedral, originally AlJama Mosque constructed by the order of the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf. Admire the Giralda, now a bell tower for the cathedral, but originally the minaret of the mosque, and in its time the tallest tower in the world, designed to resemble the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh.

One of the world’s greatest Islamic buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Mezquita, or Grand Mosque of Cordoba, is a symbol of the worldly, sophisticated culture that flourished here more than a millennium ago, in the 8 th century, when Córdoba was capital of Islamic Spain and western Europe’s biggest, most cultured city.

The design evolved for around 200 years to its final form as the Grand Mosque, until it was repurposed as a cathedral and altered accordingly. One of the most famous features of the building is its 856 double arches that are modelled on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba remains a truly mesmerizing building that exudes history, culture and opulence.

Granada, the last stronghold of Muslims in Spain, is filled with exquisite architecture and serene surroundings telling of a historic time in which Muslims ruled over this region. Every turn speaks of remnants of this age and the prosperity enjoyed by the people living there.

You’ll be taken back to this time as you walk through the picturesque arches, stroll through the Arab quarter or drink tea at one of teterías of Albayacin.

The iconic and astonishing AlHambra, standing at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, Spain’s highest mountain range, is a jewel in the crown of Islamic Spain. Developed in the 13 th century, Alhambra, a series of palaces, citadel, gardens and orchards, was the residence for the Nasarid sultans and elites, the last remaining Muslim dynasty in Al-Andalus. The profound beauty in its architectural design, intricate detail and engineering leaves visitors in awe of its allure.

Known as the ‘city of three cultures’ due to the peaceful coexistence of  Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities for centuries. Toldeo’s magnificence comes from the numerous mosques, synagogues and churches alongside its palaces and fortresses. Amongst the most famous are the Catedral Primada de Toledo, a gothic cathedral, the Mezquita del

Cristo de La Cruz, the Mosque of Christ of the Light, a 10 th century mosque and the Santa María la Blanca, a former synagogue built in the Muslims style of construction.

Gaze in wonder at the rich and diverse history of Toldeo that exudes out of its buildings, landscapes and culture. A UNESCO World Heritage site, still preserving its original layout and accessible through its narrow, winding streets, Toldeo will leave you deeply fascinated with Islamic Spain.

Tour Reviews

Very well arranged ! Our guide and driver Yasin was very efficient and punctual. He was very accommodating to our needs and a safe and excellent driver. His planning covered everything we wanted to see. He made our trip very enjoyable and comfortable. He also added a personal touch by taking us to a friend’s farm where we had delicious home cooked food and warm hospitality.

Brought me easily one of the best tour guides and private tours. Tour guide was very sincere, knowledgeable, kind, and works from the heart, which made our tour and trip a very enjoyable and also knowledge-increasing one. Very recommended for having an enjoyable travel while also learning history of sites.

I cannot recommend Yasin and these tours enough! We had the pleasure of doing a guided tour of the Alhambra, and our guide made the experience way more than we expected. He was knowledgeable, patient and passionate. I mostly appreciated that he was flexible and went out of his way to help with bookings etc until the last minute. If you want an in depth description of the Islamic influence and significance of the Alhambra, this is the perfect tour for you.

We were very lucky to have your co. as our travel agent. Especially our guide, Alauddin. Thanks a lot to him. He is very well knows the Islamic history in Spain. He is very helpful and punctual. Our HALAL food and SOLAT time were taken care by him. We will not hesitate to recommend your travel co. to our friends in Singapore and Malaysia. THANK YOU AGAIN !!

An amazing 5 day Andalusia tour with Ahmad from Ilim Tour. Ahmad, our tour guide, gave us (myself and my 2 teenage children aged 16 and 18) in-depth information about each of the sites we visited in Cordoba, Seville and Granada and modified our tour to suit the interests of me and my teens (e.g we hiked near Alhambra and also looked at some of the works of the professional grafitti artists around Granada since my daughter loves contemporary street art). Ahmad had an easy going personality which was perfect for our group. He was also considerate, always asking if we wanted to walk or take the car to the next site. There was no hassle trying to find good food in a new country, as Ahmad not only knew all the halal restaurants, but which ones specialised in which types of food. We were always offered at least 2 options for restaurants for lunch and dinner. Ahmad also knew where all the mosques where (mosques are not easy to find in contemporary Spain), and set aside time in the program for salah. Yasin was our guide for Alhambra. His passion for the palace and it’s Islamic history as well as his knowledge of Arabic, art and history brought this beautiful palace to life. In conclusion, great food, considerate tour guides and awe-inspiring sites. We would love to book another tour in future with the wonderful Ilim Tour guides.

Tour yang sangat menyenangkan dan mendapat ilmu2 pengetahuan baru yg sebelumnya blm tahu 4hari yg sangat padat seville ,cordoba, granada dan toledo tp krn pak yasin bisa mendapatkan semuanya yg diinginkan …kuliner halal souvenir yg indah2 pokoknya pak Yasin is the best????????????

Best best and the best 😂👌 That’s all I can say Yasin has got so much patience, bro you the man for this job.
