The Amalfi Coast cruise port is located in the city of Salerno, 35 minutes south of Naples. Cruise ships dock on the western end of the port, and passengers are shuttled from the ship to the port gate. The shuttle ride to the port gate is quick and only takes about 10 minutes.

You can arrange transportation to the Piazza della Concordia in the city center, which takes about 10 minutes via shuttle bus. Many people travel outside Salerno on shore excursions, in which case you will be told where to meet.

To experience the quintessential Amalfi Coast drive, a coach bus service runs up and down the coast, stopping in Salerno, Positano, Amalfi, and Sorrento. Taxis are also available.

Positano is the spot for unique artisan goods, while Sorrento is the overall hub for shopping. You’ll find brand name clothing stores and well as merchants selling local goods. Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Costiera Amalftiana or Amalfi Coast is an international hotspot on the Sorrento Peninsula’s southern belly, between Naples and Salerno. The coast stretches roughly 50km in length and is celebrated for its natural diversity, and breathtaking mountainside landscapes and is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Amalfi has been a popular destination for affluent Europeans since the 18th century, though today, thousands of international tourists visit annually. Visitors may recognize the “Divine Coast” as the location used in major films such as Wonder Woman and Under the Tuscan Sun.

Top Things to Do and See

With 13 municipalities located along the coast, restaurants and shops have no shortage to enjoy the region’s famous Limoncello liqueur or purchase handmade specialty goods like the Bambagina paper. This ancient paper, also called Amalfi paper, was produced at mills like the one owned by the Milano family in Amalfi town.

The Valle Delle Ferriere is a protected nature reserve found in the mountains near Scala. This special gem passes through a deep valley that is lined with lush vegetation and prehistoric nature. Take a hike along the 5km loop and pass through centuries-old ironworks as you journey towards the gushing waterfalls. These water sources provided the energy for the many watermills found regionally.

Take a day excursion to areas like Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii . Day trips to this world-famous volcano that ended the lives of an estimated 16,000 people in the area of Pompeii in AD 79. Though Mt. Vesuvius has not erupted since 1944, it remains the only active volcano on the European mainland. View the excavated ruins of the city it swallowed and the people frozen in time, covered by ash. This UNESCO World Heritage Site will surely leave lasting memories during your time along the Amalfi Coast.

The Amalfi Coast is also home to Punta Campanella , a marine protected area at the tip of the Sorrentine Peninsula. From the tower, Torre di Montalto gazes out upon the sea and hopes to spot a fabled Siren swimming below. It is fabled that this area is where the great Ulysses passed through, tied to the mast of his ship.  Snorkel in the crystal-blue waters keeping an eye out for the region's famous barracuda population.

Across from Punta Campanella is the island of Capri . Stopovers at Capri should include the intermediate-level one-hour hike up Mount Solaro. The summit can also be accessed via a chair lift to enjoy a less strenuous experience or ride down the lift to have the best of both worlds. Finish your day with a dip in the Blue Grotto. This massive flooded cave can be accessed by sea or by land, though if you come by sea, you may need to duck to fit through the small one-meter opening.

The Grotta dello Smeraldo, or Emerald Grotto, is located in Conca dei Marini. It is accessible via an elevator shaft or a boat ride and is a beautiful example of one of Italy’s many grottos and natural coves. It would make a wonderful addition to any day excursion plans.

Though located in the Mediterranean, it can get cold in the winter months, with temperatures averaging around 10°C or 50°F and rougher sea conditions. Therefore, visiting the Amalfi Coast from spring through fall is recommended to enjoy the warmer temperatures, peaking in summer at around 30°C/86°F, and the waters are calm and soothing. The clear blue Tyrrhenian Sea will have an average temperature of 26°C/78°F in summer, making snorkeling or swimming possible all day long.

Top Tips While Cruising the Amalfi Coast

As there is beautiful sunshine and warmer temperatures, it is strongly suggested to bring sunshades such as a hat and sunglasses with you on your journey. A reef-safe sunscreen and towel are also recommended for the many beaches and day trips you will surely encounter. Bring layers that can easily be added or removed as you cruise around the ocean or take adventure walks through the mountains. The breeze may feel chilly after a day of sun exposure. Though many businesses are now using contactless payment, it is wise to bring cash for smaller businesses that do not accept card payments or for adding a gratuity to your excursions and services.

The exquisite town of Amalfi, located within a deep ravine at the base of Monte Cerreto, is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site due to its natural beauty. Surrounded by the most turquoise of seas, and streets lined with wisteria-covered buildings, it’s known locally as the ‘Pearl of the Mediterranean’. Many of its buildings were lost to the sea in an earthquake in 1343, but it’s still possible to see the Moorish-style Cloister of Paradise and Arab-Romanesque Sant’Andrea Cathedral.

I've lived on the Amalfi Coast for 17 years. Here are the 7 mistakes tourists should avoid making while visiting.

• After living on the Amalfi Coast for 17 years, I've seen many tourists make the same mistakes.
• Instead of taking a day trip , tourists should plan to spend more time on the Amalfi Coast.
• I also recommend visiting spots outside Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello.

I believe every trip to the Amalfi Coast should be just as beautiful as the coastline itself. Like the roughly 5 million travelers who visit each year, I fell in love with the Amalfi Coast while on vacation. In fact, I loved it so much that it's now been my home for 17 years.

However, during my time living on the coast, I've seen tourists make the same mistakes over and over again. Luckily, many blunders can be avoided with some tips from a local.

Here are the seven most common mistakes I see tourists make while visiting the Amalfi Coast.

Choosing the wrong season to travel to the Amalfi Coast

Tourist season on the Amalfi Coast typically runs from Easter through October . While the coast is beautiful throughout the year, it's important to keep in mind that many hotels, restaurants, and shops close during the offseason. Additionally, ferry service connecting the Amalfi Coast villages only runs during the tourist season.

If you're dreaming of a classic beach vacation , the best time to visit is from July to September. Although April, May, and October are excellent times to visit, the sea might be too chilly for some swimmers.

Renting a car and attempting to take on Amalfi Drive

Driving the famously narrow and zigzagging Amalfi Drive is not for the faint of heart. It's also not a fun experience for most drivers — including the locals. Given the crowded roads and expensive (or nonexistent) parking, tackling the drive as a tourist is not a good idea.

Instead, opt for the ferries that connect many of the villages along the coastline. If you're a driving enthusiast and the experience is one you'd like to try, I'd suggest driving along Amalfi Drive during the offseason.

Seeing the Amalfi Coast on a day trip

The beauty of the Amalfi Coast is no secret, and visitors come from around the world to see the pastel-hued buildings and swim in the turquoise sea.

But with travelers arriving every day by ferries, buses, and cruise ships, the narrow roads and small villages are easily overwhelmed, especially during the high season.

To avoid getting caught up in the day-tripping crowds, I recommend planning a longer stay. This way, you can enjoy the peaceful mornings and relaxed-evening ambiance. You'll likely enjoy your vacation more, and it's better for the local economy, too.

Only visiting the three most popular towns

While Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello are the three most popular destinations , the Amalfi Coast is made up of 13 distinct villages . From tiny seaside gems to villages nestled in the mountains, there's so much more to discover.

Forgetting to carefully check accommodation details before arrival

Nothing ruins a trip to the Amalfi Coast like a bumpy arrival. For example, many tourists are surprised to find their accommodation is located far outside the center of a village. Before booking, and certainly before arriving, be sure to check the exact location of where you're staying.

Keep in mind that many of the villages on the Amalfi Coast have several frazioni (hamlets). Although they're part of the larger village, these smaller villages can be located well outside the historic center.

If you're looking for a quiet getaway, this can be a pleasant surprise. However, it can be far less convenient for transportation and shopping.

Likewise, steps are a way of life on the Amalfi Coast. Be sure to check the number of steps it will take to reach your rental and arrange for assistance with luggage in advance.

Not wearing proper footwear for hikes

The Amalfi Coast has two sides — the sea and the mountains. Hiking paths offer incredible views that are well worth the many steps.

The Path of the Gods , which is located above the towns of Praiano and Positano, has become extremely popular in recent years. However, injuries and even deaths happen every year along this popular hike.

It's important to always stay aware — even with the distractingly beautiful vistas — and to wear proper footwear. While many of the hikes in the area don't require hiking boots, you do need comfortable and supportive shoes with good tread.

If you want to hike but aren't very experienced, a local trekking guide can help you plan ahead and enjoy a hike that is safe and right for you.

Not taking time to uncover the local history

While a day (or two or three) at the beach is a must, the Amalfi Coast has a surprisingly rich history that many visitors completely miss.

Uncover the area's ancient Roman past at the Museo Archeologico Romano di Positano , where visitors can see the ruins of an ancient Roman villa that was destroyed by the same 79 AD eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that covered Pompeii.

Next, stop at the Cathedral of Amalfi to visit the peaceful Cloister of Paradise and the excellent museum and crypt.

Meander through town to the top of the valley to visit the Paper Museum , set in a 13th-century mill, to learn more about the town's important handmade paper tradition.

Russia says US 'playing with fire' in 'indirect war' with Moscow

M OSCOW (Reuters) - A top Russian diplomat said on Friday the United States had long since entered into a state of indirect war with Moscow and was playing with fire over Ukraine by behaving in such a way that the situation could spin out of control.

The comments by deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov in an interview with state TASS news agency reflect growing Russian concern over what Moscow casts as dangerous Western escalation in Ukraine as Russian forces advance in several places.

"We warn that they are playing with fire. They have long been in a state of indirect war with the Russian Federation," Ryabkov told TASS, referring to the United States.

"They somehow fail to realise that, in order to satisfy their own geopolitical ideas, they are approaching a phase in which it will be very difficult to control what is happening and to prevent a dramatic crisis."

Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of waging an unprovoked war of aggression in Ukraine aimed at seizing land. Moscow says what it calls its "special military operation", launched in February 2022, is defensive and aimed at bolstering Russian security against a hostile West.

Russia has interpreted recent comments from Western diplomats as an aggressive shift in position and the Russian defence ministry said this month that President Vladimir Putin had ordered drills to rehearse using tactical nuclear weapons in what officials said was a response to Western rhetoric.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, during a visit to Kyiv on May 3, said Ukraine had a right to use the weapons provided by Britain to strike targets inside Russia, and that it was up to Kyiv whether or not to do so.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made similar comments about U.S.-supplied weapons during a visit on Wednesday to Kyiv, where he accused Putin of "ramping up yet another offensive against Ukraine" in the east.

Blinken said Washington had "not encouraged or enabled strikes outside of Ukraine, but ultimately Ukraine has to make decisions for itself about how it’s going to conduct this war."

Ukraine has targeted military and energy targets across Russia, which is bombarding targets inside Ukraine in attacks that have killed thousands of civilians, to try to degrade Moscow's military capacities.

Steps by the U.S. and the European Union to look at the possibility of using frozen Russian assets or the profits on them to help Ukraine have also angered Moscow. Russia accuses Washington of trying to bully European countries into taking more radical steps to thwart it in Ukraine.

LIVING 'IN A BOX'

Ryabkov told TASS that Washington appeared oblivious to the grave risks attached to its behaviour.

"This rhetoric, this drumming, this constant baiting of their allies to help Ukraine even more, to expand their support, shows only one thing: people are living, as they themselves say, 'in a box'," he said.

"This is the great risk of the current situation, because it is impossible to get through to them (the Americans).

Ryabkov complained that the West had adopted a stance of strategic uncertainty and ambiguity towards Russia, trying to make it difficult for Moscow to predict how NATO will react in various situations, including with nuclear weapons.

"Russia will put the topic of 'red lines' aside and will respond to the West in a mirror manner," Ryabkov said.

Russia's diplomacy with the West was now in crisis management mode and was focused on trying to ensure that tensions do not spill over into a large-scale conflict, he added.
