Travelan: the newest addition to my travel medical kit.

' src=

Brought to you by Nuffnang and Travelan.

I’ve always been someone with a weak and sensitive stomach.

So, you better believe my travel medical kit includes pills to treat everything from nausea to heartburn to travelers’ diarrhea. Motion sickness pills have proven useful when taking the long, overnight bus rides in the Baltics. That chalky, pink stuff has helped cut through excess acid after stuffing my face with spicy currywurst in Berlin .

Other tablets have helped me to NOT have to visit the toilet every 30 minutes while suffering from a case of good, old-fashioned traveler’s diarrhoea in Central America . As luck would have it, I ate and drank pretty much everything the same as my travel partner, but I was the one to end up feeling flat for several days instead of enjoying my trip. Go figure!

Memories of such experiences have me wary of travel to places like India . While it’s definitely on my list, I’ve already come to terms with the idea that I will probably sacrifice some travel time to a bout of Delhi Belly, or two.

Or not…

I recently learned about a product called Travelan, which is used to actually prevent travelers’ diarrhea before it starts . Oh yes, it is definitely the newest addition to my travel medical kit. Here’s why:

Prevent traveler's diarrhea with Travelan

What is Travelers’ Diarrhea?

Travelers’ Diarrhea is known by many names: Montezuma’s Revenge, Delhi Belly, Bali Belly, Tourist Trot, and so on. No matter what funny name it is called, it is, by no means , a fun experience for the person affected. Trust me!

TD can completely debilitate a traveler for several days, up to a week, as I’ve learned from first-hand experience. Common symptoms include nausea, frequent and urgent diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever and vomiting. In other words, you feel terrible and are confined to a space that is no further than a quick leap to a toilet.

Contracting TD often occurs in developing countries where health and safety standards aren’t as high. It happens after ingesting water or food that has been contaminated, most likely with e.coli.

Although TD will often clear up on its own after a few days, it is generally not something travelers are able to ignore. It will eat into some of that precious travel time.

When you’ve been saving and planning for that special trip for months (or years!), no one has time for that.

What is Travelan?

Travelan is the only over-the-counter (OTC) method of preventing travelers’ diarrhea that is also not an antibiotic. One Travelan before every meal is all it takes to protect against the major strains of E. coli by up to 90% (proven in clinical trials). In addition to E. coli, Travelan actually protects against the most common strains of bacteria that lead to the dreaded Montezuma’s Revenge.

With Travelan, you can actually prevent TD instead of just trying to treat the awful, soul-sucking symptoms.

travelan travelers diarrhea preventative

How Does Travelan Work?

To protect against TD, Travelan should be taken before every meal (and snack). Each tablet contains Bovine Colostrum Powder enriched with Exteri-Toxigenic E.coli (ETEC) antibodies. These antibodies grab hold of the ETEC in the gut and keep it from sticking to the lining. They also neutralize the toxins these bacteria produce which would otherwise make us sick.

Who Should Take Travelan?

Travelan is a perfect product for those planning to visit a country where it is recommended to not drink the water, avoid ice cubes, only eat peeled fruit, and so on. Any country with lower health standards than your home country would be a good destination for the use of Travelan.

Travelers' Diarrhea World Risk Map

How Do I Buy Travelan?

Travelan is currently sold in the USA , Canada and Australia. You can pick it up at most pharmacies for around $30 for a 10-day pack. It’s a small investment that could save you from days of ruined travel plans.

Travelan can be shipped anywhere in the world when purchased from Travelan.com.au . It is also available on Amazon in the US and eBay in Australia .

Thanks for your post on Travelan. I travel a lot, and often to countries with risk of getting TD. Next up is a volunteer stint in Kathmandu, followed by travel in India. I have mostly avoided TD by frequent hand washing, hand sanitizer, and careful eating. I decided to take Travelan on this next trip, but I’m worried it might cause constipation. Thoughts?

  • How to avoid Bali Belly

' src=

This post contains compensated links. Please read our disclaimer for more info.

The most common question I get from readers is how to avoid Bali belly on their family holidays to Bali. There is nothing worse than spending your holidays stuck in the bathroom and it’s even worse when little kids get it!

The following information is what I have collected over the years of travelling to Bali and is not medical information. Seek professional advice from a doctor if you need further information.

Table of Contents

  • 1 What is Bali Belly?
  • 2 Tips to prevent Bali Belly
  • 3 Hand Hygiene
  • 4 Don’t drink the tap water
  • 5 Be mindful of the food you eat
  • 6 Use products to avoid contracting Bali Belly
  • 7 If you get Bali Belly what can you do?

What is Bali Belly?

Bali Belly is the term given to diarrhoea and/or vomiting caused by consuming contaminated food and water. Poor food handling practices and drinking untreated water are ways that the bugs can spread.

The types of bugs that can cause Bali Belly include:

Bacteria : Most commonly E. coli

Viruses : Rotavirus and norovirus can be present when Bali belly is diagnosed

Parasites : Gardia being the most common

Tips to prevent Bali Belly

There are many different ways travellers to Bali try to prevent contracting Bali Belly. I know some people do none of these tips and are still fine. Where as others are really, really careful and do their best to avoid it and still end up with it!

I have travelled to Bali over 10 times and have only vomited once and was fine 2 hours later. The kids and Jed have never had Bali Belly but we unfortunately have had gastro in Australia many times!

Hand Hygiene

Wash hands and using hand sanitizer is a must if you are trying to avoid any bugs that can make you sick, this goes for in Australia too! Make sure you use hand hygiene practices before eating, after going to the toilet, if you have coughed into them, the list goes on.

This also applys to the places that are preparing your food. If they use good hand hygiene practices and use filtered water to prepare the food you will have less of a chance of contracting Bali belly.

travelan or travel bug

Don’t drink the tap water

It’s best to drink filtered water in Bali. Try to reduce your plastic consumption by taking a drink bottle and refilling it where you can. A lot of villas and even some hotels will have filtered water dispensers for you to use. Also when you are brushing your teeth use the filtered water rather than the tap water. We find a great way to remind the kids is to cover the taps with a towel so they don’t automatically turn on the tap.

In general ice that is used in drinks and reputable establishments will be fine and I have drank many drinks with ice in them. The ice cubes in Asia that are circular with a hole are made from filtered water. If you have any concerns, just ask for your drink with no ice.

Be mindful of the food you eat

When you are choosing food to eat make sure it is hot and cooked well. Food that has been sitting luke warm all day should be avoided and buffets that have a high refresh rate due to lots of patrons are best.

We eat salads and fresh vegetables in Bali but we do choose places that have good hand hygiene practices. Likewise street stalls that cook the food fresh in front of you are a great cheap source of food in Bali. If you are concerned steer clear of street food vendors and salads.

Use products to avoid contracting Bali Belly

There are a few things that we do to try and avoid the dreaded Bali Belly.

  • Probiotics: We focus on gut health in our house so use probiotics regularly but also recommend for families to do this too when travelling to Bali. I buy my probiotics from Amazon or iHerb . Feel free to use the iHerb link to get 10% off your first order.
  • Travelan : We tested out this product on our October 2019 family holiday to Bali and Singapore and no one had Bali Belly! You take a tablet before each meal and I love that it is listed as a medicine on the Australian Register for Therapeutic Goods. This can only be only used by kids younger than 6 years old under medical advice.
  • Travelbug by Ethical Nutrients : This is another product we have used previously on our Bali holidays with great success. You do need to keep it refrigerated before you travel but it can then stay out of the fridge for 4 weeks. The capsules can be pulled apart and the contents mixed in the kids breakfast.
  • Red cordial: We have never tried this method but I have heard lots of success with it. A shot of red cordial each day they say helps to keep Bali Belly away.
  • Remember that a change in diet can often give you unwanted symptoms like diarrhoea and an upset tummy.

Travelan

If you get Bali Belly what can you do?

So you have managed to contract the dreaded Bali belly what can you do now?

  • Activated Charcoal can be a great way to get rid of the toxins and is readily available in Bali at Apotek’s (pharmacies). Look for Norit in a yellow container. You can also buy it on Amazon or iHerb and we regularly use it at home for gut health.
  • Travelan and Travel Bug can both lessen the symptoms once you have contracted it.
  • Keep hydrated with filtered water and please seek medical attention if young or elderly. Babies and toddlers can dehydrate very quickly so keep an eye on nappies to make sure they aren’t dry and an electrolyte like hydralyte is great to travel with.
  • Coconut water is great and avoid caffeine and alcohol while you are sick.

We all try our best to avoid getting Bali Belly but focusing on it too much won’t change if you are going to get it or not. Do your best and try to enjoy your next Bali family holiday. This is a great article on dealing with Bali Belly once you return home.

Feel free to join our Facebook group as there are lots of tips from other families that travel to Bali with their kids.

Don't forget with the red cordial Red Anchor brand & can't be sugar free!!

Thanks again - seems some like travelan and some travel bug. I know they are totally different ingredients - one a probiotic and the other a milk protein. Just wondered if there was greater efficacy of one ingredient over another?

travelan or travel bug

We always start drinking 1 yak-ult each day a week before we go and every day when we are there. Touch would over 20 years we have never had a problem with either of us or the 3 kids.

travelan or travel bug

I agree with taking Yakult. I start about 2 weeks before going. Another plus is that is readily available at the convenience stores and is cheap. No matter what you take there is the chance of travelers diarrhoea which is very different to bali belly

I've tried all these things and still gotten sick, so I don't bother any more. There's really no clinical evidence of there effectiveness, only anecdotal.

Expert reveals ways to detect and avoid bed bug infestations while travelling

Don't forget to check your room for tiny, invasive and itchy roommates. Photo / Getty Images

Don’t let the bed bugs bite – or worse – become an unwanted souvenir.

The last thing you want to deal with after a day at the beach or a full day of city exploration is a bedbug infestation . These pesky critters can easily turn your dream holiday into a nightmare, and worse, they can come home with you and infest your own bed, too.

After last year’s nightmare infestation in Paris , it pays to know what warning signs you should be looking for.

Nick Shacklock, a homeware professional from the UK, shared with the Express newspaper what guests should do as soon as they check into a new hotel.

Take note of his helpful suggestions and make sure you can identify and get rid of potential bed bugs at your accommodation

Watch out for bed bugs when travelling. Photo / File

First inspection

The main thing to look for in finding bed bugs is blood.

Nic said: “Bed bugs are easily squashed and when this happens, they tend to leave a lot of blood.”

Don’t shrug off any stains, especially red patches, since it is highly likely that the red stains in your sheets are squashed bed bugs and there may be more lurking around.

Additionally, inspect the room’s walls and furniture for any weird and alarming dark and white spots since they tend to crawl under whatever surface is available.

Musty odour

A smelly room should be a major red flag on its own, but a musty, lingering aroma is a big indication that your room is infested with bed bugs.

Bed bugs omit a musty scent from their scent glands. Double-check if the bottom of the bed and the mattress smell funky, and if it is, you better have a backup accommodation option in place.

Eggs are another indicator of a bed bug infestation . These eggs are tiny, about 1mm wide, and have a pale yellow appearance. Spotting them on furniture or bedding is a sure sign that you’re dealing with bedbugs.

Morning itches and red lumps

The biggest and worst sign of a bug infestation is its manifestation on your body.

If you wake up with red, itchy lumps around your body, it’s likely the critters have bitten you in the night. Don’t shrug off any itchiness, as bite marks might not show up straightaway.

Of course, there can be multiple reasons for skin irritation , but what makes bed bug bits distinct is how the bite patterns are usually grouped in a line, whereas other bugs such as mosquitoes and fleas don’t bite in this formation.

While most places you check into will be perfectly clean and free from bed bugs, it always pays to be vigilant. These critters love a holiday too, and may just spend their next getaway in your bed at home.

Up to a Trillion Cicadas Are About to Emerge in the U.S.

Two periodical cicada broods are appearing in a 16-state area in the Midwest and Southeast for the first time in centuries. Can you get rid of them? Do they bite you? We answer your questions.

A single cicada with red eyes rests on a ledge.

By Aimee Ortiz

In a rare occurrence, a trillion cicadas from two different broods are expected to begin appearing in the Midwest and Southeast regions of the United States at the end of April.

It’s the first time since 1803 that Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, and Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood, will appear together in an event known as a dual emergence.

Thomas Jefferson was president the last time that the Northern Illinois Brood’s 17-year cycle aligned with the Great Southern Brood’s 13-year period. After this spring, it’ll be another 221 years before the groups, which are geographically adjacent, appear together again.

A roughly 16-state area will be center stage for these periodical cicadas, which differ from those that appear annually in smaller numbers.

Forested areas, including urban green spaces, are more likely to see higher numbers of cicadas than agricultural regions. To put into perspective just how many of these bugs could emerge, one trillion cicadas, each just over an inch long, would cover 15,782,828 miles if they were placed end to end, said Floyd W. Shockley, an entomologist and collections manager at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

“That cicada train would reach to the moon and back 33 times,” Dr. Shockley said.

When are the cicadas coming out?

The first cicadas are expected to start emerging in late April. Temperature determines when they come out, said Gene Kritsky, a retired professor of biology at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, and the author of several books on cicadas, including “A Tale of Two Broods.”

Professor Kritsky said that first the soil needs to reach 64 degrees Fahrenheit, about six inches deep, and “then you get a good soaking rain, and that’s when they really pop,” he said.

They’ll use their forelegs to tunnel out from the earth, their beady red eyes looking for a spot where they can peacefully finish maturing. A few days after they emerge and molt, the males will start buzzing in an effort to find a mate, a slow-building crescendo of noise that as a chorus can be louder than a plane .

Where will they be?

The first waves of cicadas will emerge in northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, northern Georgia, and up into western South Carolina, Professor Kritsky said.

Then they’ll surface in central North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and northern Arkansas, followed by southern Missouri, Southern Illinois and western Kentucky . Finally, he said, the cicadas will appear throughout central and northern Missouri and Illinois, northwestern Indiana, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa.

How long will the dual emergence last?

The Midwest and Southeast should be buzzing for about six weeks.

In most cases, Dr. Shockley said, the cicadas, which live about a month, will die not far from where they had emerged.

Are cicadas dangerous?

Cicadas don’t bite or sting, nor do they carry any diseases. But since they’re “not great fliers and even worse landers,” cicadas often end up on sidewalks and city streets, where they can be squished by people or cars and “could conceivably make things slick.”

“In urban areas, there will be sufficient numbers to necessitate removal of their bodies,” Dr. Shockley said. “But rather than throwing in the trash or cleaning up with street sweepers, people should consider them basically free fertilizer for the plants in their gardens and natural areas.”

If you have a dog that likes to eat them, it’s not good to let them gorge themselves on the insects because it can lead to intestinal blockage, said Professor Kritsky.

How do I get rid of cicadas?

The short answer is: You don’t. If you have delicate plants that you want to protect, then use special netting created for that purpose.

The bugs are beneficial to the environment, acting as natural tree gardeners. The holes they leave behind when they emerge from the ground help aerate the soil and allow for rainwater to get underground and nourish tree roots in hot summer months. The slits they make in trees can cause some branches to break, and the leaves then turn brown in a process known as “flagging,” which is a kind of natural pruning. When the branch grows again, the fruits it yields will tend to be larger. When they die, the cicadas’ rotting bodies provide nutrients that trees need.

John R. Cooley, a biology professor at the University of Connecticut, said that his best advice for people living in the regions of the dual emergence is to let the bugs be.

“The forest is where they live,” he said. “They are a part of the forest. Don’t try to kill them. Don’t try to spray insecticide, all that kind of thing. That’s just going to end badly because there are more than you could possibly kill with insecticide. You’d end up killing everything.”

Bed Bug Prevention Tips for Before, During, and After Travel

Everything to know from traversing the airport to unpacking when you get home.

A bed bug outbreak in Paris just nine months before the Olympic Games has tourists wondering how to prevent and treat those pesky critters, so Travel + Leisure spoke with experts about what to look out for and what to do if the insects do pop up.

First things first: don’t panic. Bed bugs are annoying and difficult to get rid of, but they’re not typically dangerous, Eric Braun, a board certified entomologist and technical services manager for Terminix, told T+L. In fact, bed bugs aren’t known to transmit any diseases.

“It's the ick factor, right? They find them in areas where you're sleeping, where you're at your most vulnerable, where you feel protected and they're invading that space,” Braun said. “It's more of a psychological impact than it is a health-related impact.”

Since they’re not going to hurt you, Braun said his “main concern” isn’t getting bit, but rather “bringing them home and causing an infestation.”

From packing, to traversing the airport, to entering your hotel, and more, these preventative tips will hopefully keep your dream vacation from turning into a bug-infested nightmare.

Pick the right luggage

Bed bugs like dark cracks and crevices where they can hide, Braun said. While it’s possible for them to crawl onto any surface, they typically “like to come out when we're sedentary… so it's not probable that you're going to be walking down the airport and one is going to jump on your suitcase and tag along with you.”

That said, they can climb onto any surface. That’s why packing in hardside luggage will make it less likely bed bugs will attach to the surface than if the suitcase was made of fabric, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene .

Be strategic at the airport

While comfy plush chairs in lounges and dark nooks may feel like the ideal spot to wait out a layover, Braun said that’s probably not your best bet if you’re trying to avoid picking up any unwelcome friends. Picking a hard, smooth plastic chair may be a better choice over a booth, for example.

“It's less likely [to find bed bugs] in areas that are lit and [where] people aren't sitting for extended periods of time,” he said. “It's more probable that you would contract them in a darker, more private secluded space.”

But while bed bugs prefer darkness, they will still come out when it is light, according to information from the United States Environmental Protection Agency provided to T+L.

Braun recommended travelers inspect the area they are sitting thoroughly and “pick chairs or locations that have as few potential hiding spots for these insects as possible.”

As for when you're actually on the plane, airfarewatchdog.com suggests booking a morning or daytime flight.

"Since bed bugs are nocturnal, the likelihood of them coming out in the daytime is relatively lower," the site noted, (with the caveat that luggage may still be stored in a dark overhead bin).

Unpack smartly

The first thing Braun does when he checks into a hotel room is store his suitcase in the bathroom. He also avoids luggage racks.

“When I travel, I don't unpack my suitcase, I do not put anything in the provided drawers, I do not leave any clothing around the hotel in the bed [or] on the floor,” Braun said. “Everything should be stowed away neatly… my suitcase goes in the bathroom and if they have a tub, it goes in the tub. Those are areas that are less likely for the bed bugs to be.”

Travelers can also hang their clothes in the closet.

“The bed bugs would have to crawl up the wall of the closet, crawl onto the post of the hanger, crawl down the hanger and crawl into your clothing,” Braun said. “They're not really very motivated to do that.”

Per the American Hotel and Lodging Association , travelers should consider placing their suitcase “in a plastic trash bag or protective cover during the duration of your trip to ensure that bed bugs cannot take up residence there prior to departure.”

Go straight from vacation to the dryer

If travelers suspect they’ve been bitten or came into contact with bed bugs , they shouldn’t panic. Instead, they should unpack their clothing directly into the dryer first — not the washer.

“You [can] wash them after you dry them, but the high heat will kill the life stages. The water isn't hot enough to kill them so they could survive a washing,” Braun said. “You're going to remove all the clothing from the suitcase, all the clothing that you're currently wearing, and you're going to place that in the dryer on high for about 30 minutes… if you have some items that can't go in a dryer that need to be dry cleaned, you would bag them up and take them to the dry cleaner.”

Braun added: “You're going to then look at your luggage, inspect your luggage. If you suspect that there's bed bugs in the luggage, you're going to have that professionally treated.”

How does Travelan® work?

Travelan® neutralises Travellers’ Diarrhoea causing bacteria, rather than having to treat the symptoms AFTER the condition has begun.

Travellers’ Diarrhoea continues to be the most frequent health problem in travellers 1 and the most common causes include the bacterium Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) 2 . Travellers’ Diarrhoea causing bacteria may be found in drinks and iceblocks, on the outside of fruit and vegetables, on the surface of eating utensils and anywhere contaminated water or poor hygiene has been used: from a street side stall to the finest of restaurants.

When you take one or two caplets of Travelan® before a meal, the anti- ETEC antibodies in the product lay in wait in the gastrointestinal tract. If you consume food or drinks that are contaminated with ETEC , the specific antibodies in Travelan® are designed to bind to the bacteria, neutralising them and inhibiting their attachment to the intestinal wall. Travelan® works to target and neutralise bacteria before they can make you sick and rob you of your precious holiday travel time.

Scientific Evidence – up to 90% protection

T ravelan®  has been shown in clinical trials to significantly decrease the risk of Travellers’ Diarrhoea (TD) and to decrease the symptoms of minor gastrointestinal disorders.  Travelan®  underwent Controlled Human Infection Model (CHIM) studies  which were  double-blind, placebo-controlled medical trials in Europe and the USA. The trials showed protection of  up to 90%  against infection with  E.coli (ETEC)  3 and the development of Travellers’ Diarrhoea. The clinical trials showed that people affected by E.coli  who received  Travelan® ha d significantly less discomfort and diarrhoea, compared to those who did not receive Travelan® .

In addition recent studies by the US Defense Force show that Travelan® is cross-reactive to other pathogenic bacteria such as Campylobacter, Enterotoxigenic E.coli and Shigella – all potential causes of Travellers’ Diarrhoea 4 .

Travellers’ Diarrhoea-causing bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract

Travellers’ Diarrhoea is caused by the consumption of food or water infected with bacteria. These bacteria attack the intestines releasing diarrhoea-causing toxins. Travelan® binds to E.coli in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing them from attaching to the intestinal wall and thereby neutralising their ability to cause diarrhoea and its associated symptoms.

Travelan® ’s active ingredient is bovine colostrum enriched with anti-E.coli antibodies – these special antibodies are what set it apart from other colostrum supplements. Travelan® is antimicrobial and not an antibiotic, therefore it will not cause antibiotic resistance.

To assist with the prevention of Travellers Diarrhoea, particularly when travelling to Bali, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Fiji, South America and other high-risk locations , we suggest the following:

  • Start taking Travelan 2 to 3 days before you travel and during your trip

  • Don’t have ice in your drinks.
  • Wash your hands in soap regularly.

What is the best medicine to stop diarrhoea?

Many travellers travelling to high-risk destinations for Travellers Diarrhoea will pack medicine to treat diarrhoea, rather than explore medicines and techniques to help prevent diarrhoea. The savvy traveller won’t just ask “what medicine can I pack to stop diarrhoea”? They will also ask “what medicine can I pack to help reduce the risk of getting travellers’ diarrhoea in the first place?”.

Travelan is clinically proven to help reduce the risk of getting Travellers’ Diarrhoea (or Bali Belly) by up to 90%.  Learn more here

HI - trying to decide which one has greater research and efficacy behind it to stop travellers diarrhoea and E. coli bug? Thanks

travelan or travel bug

Travelan 3 times a day & Travel bug once a day before breakfast. We have tried both & we prefer once a day while on holiday. Less intrusive.

travelan or travel bug

Travelan and Super Colostrum are purely made of colostrum (from cow's milk) and it is said to stop bacteria from taking hold in the colon and growing/proliferating.

Travel Bug contains Saccharomyces cerevisiae (boulardii) and living bacteria which fights bad bacteria. According to Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharomyces_boulardii ) there has been extensive trials/research into it's effectiveness.

So really you have two different products doing two different things. Taking both as Mac does sounds like a great idea!! ;) Cover all bases. A small investment to give yourself the best chance of having a trouble free, TD free holiday.

Travelbug (30 tabs) is currently selling for $23.49 at Chem Whse (Australia).

Travelan (30 tabs) is currently $28.49 also at Chem Whse. (expensive at 95c per tablet)

Super Colostrum (200 tabs) (the superior version of Travelan) has recently come down to a mere $15.59 at Chem Whse!!! :D That's a saving of $6 and it works out to be a mere 7c per tablet.

And remember, if you or anyone reading this follows all the guidelines that everyone here has posted and you still get a touch of TD, don't panic!! :) If you have consumed a meal or beverage containing bad bacteria your body will just pass it out (as it very much needs to) but without it becoming a full on case of BB. I say this from personal experience. On two separate trips I thought Travelan failed me but then I quickly realised that all was okay within an hour or so. Phew!

One last tip, whichever supplement(s) you choose to take, it might be a good idea to take one before consuming a meal on your flight .

Happy travels! :)

I have purchased the Super Colostrum tablets. It says to have up to 6 a day. Any thoughts on how many to take? We are a family of 4 but only 3 taking them (one thinks he will be fine without them).

' class=

There was a post awhile back on this subject and the poster recommended always taking lactoferrin which I'd never heard off but I think it's also a colostrum based Tab. Anyone have any experience of this one?

Hubby and I (and friends we often travel with) used to take Travelan on all trips to Asian countries for quite a few years but got slack over the past few years. We've also done the red cordial routine. Now hubby & I just take a really good 'one a day' probiotic and all 3 seem to do the same thing for us - prevent us from getting any bad tummy bugs.

We've also taken nothing at all and also been fine. So for us it could just be luck of the draw however I will say that on the times one of us has felt 'off' after a meal, the travelan seems to work the best for putting an immediate stop to the issue. Haven't used travel bug but I think that is more like a probiotic.

My biggest advice is wash hands with soap and water before eating and after handling lots of money or stair railings. If not soap/water around resort to using a wipe or sanitiser. This works for us.

Hi Perth_WA Ash do you know which shop sells the Anchor brand as i have had trouble finding it in the main supermarkets? Thanks

Hi I use travel bug always when travelling in Asia or Indonesia. If I feel a little dodgy will take extra travel bug and charcoal tablets. Appears to keep anything from progressing. I always carry baby wipes and hand sanitizer and use thèm often :)

Can someone tell me if Travelan and Dukoral do essentially the same thing? I think it's too late for me to take Dukoral as I leave on September 6.

Also - if I'm taking acidophilus capsules can I also take Travelan? Is it safe?

There seems to be no Travel Bug in Canada, but can anyone recommend a tablet that doesn't require refrigeration and to be taken THREE times daily? Thanks :)

Travelan is my vote plus the red cordial. You cant buy the cordial in bali which is a shame.
