Parts that are printed in italics parts will be covered by the ship.

All distances are “approximate distances” of recommended bike tours. The tour details are barring changes, a.o. as a result of nautical, technical or meteorological reasons.

The day-by-day itinerary for Zwaantje & Fleur is slightly different. We will send you details on request.

Day 1: Amsterdam – Vianen

Embarkation and check-in is between 1.30 – 1.50 p.m., where your crew for the week will be waiting to welcome you on board. At  2 p.m. the ship will depart from Amsterdam for Vianen, a small, fortified village on the Lek River. After dinner you have the opportunity to enjoy a short first test ride through the surrounding area.

Day 2: Vianen – Schoonhoven – Kinderdijk (32 km/19 mi. or 56 km/34 mi.) | Kinderdijk – Dordrecht

Today you will cycle along a beautiful route to Schoonhoven – nicknamed Zilverstad (“Silver City”) – a city renowned for its talented silver smiths since the 17th century. Later in the day as you cycle through the Alblasserwaard region you will reach Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 large windmills. All 19 windmills have a UNESCO cultural heritage listing and are a definite highlight – you will have the opportunity to visit one so don’t forget to bring your camera! From nearby Alblasserdam you will take the “Waterbus”, a fast ferry, that will take you and your bicycle in approx. 10 minutes to Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in Holland.

Day 3: Dordrecht – Willemstad | Willemstad – Bergen op Zoom (42 km/26 mi. or 50 km/31 mi.)

As you enjoy your breakfast aboard the ship, the ship will sail to Willemstad where you will start your day’s cycling. Willemstad is a beautiful old fortified town on the Haringvliet waterway. Your bicycle ride goes to Tholen, once was an island in the middle of the large Zeeland streams, where many people fished for their living. Nowadays Tholen is connected to the mainland in various ways.

Then you cycle on to the destination of this trip, Bergen op Zoom. Bergen op Zoom is a historic fortified town that once lay on the open waters of the Oosterschelde. After dinner you can take a walk through the old town. Narrow streets, old town, market and church squares and idiosyncratic monumental buildings show the history of a rich and eventful past that goes back more than eight hundred years.

Day 4 : Bergen op Zoom – Kreekrak lock (21 km/13 mi. or 35 km/21 mi.)  | Kreekrak lock – Antwerp

In the morning you will enjoy a small bike ride through the beautiful “Wouwse Plantage” surrounding Bergen op Zoom. In the early afternoon you will once again board the ship which will sail to the port city of Antwerp, situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and is a city with a long list of attractions including: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle. Dinner tonight (not included) will be in town in a restaurant of your choice (recommendations available on board).

Day 5: Antwerp – Temse – St. Amands (34 km/21 mi. or 49 km/31 mi.)

This morning you will cycle out of Antwerp along a picturesque section of the Schelde River to St. Amands your home for the night. There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour.

Day 6: St. Amands – Dendermonde | Dendermonde – Ghent (52 km/32 mi.)

Today you will continue to follow the river Schelde to Ghent where the ship will moor for the night at a lock in a suburb of town. Ghent is a lively university city that boasts a rich history. Since Roman times Ghent’s position at the junction of Leie and Schelde Rivers has ensured that it has been a successful trading port.  In total the city features an Opera House, 18 museums, more than 100 churches and over 400 historical buildings. Major attractions are St. Bavo Cathedral where a number of masterpieces of medieval art including the world famous ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by Jan van Eyck are kept and the 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent, one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city center. Before dinner a small canal boat will take you for a guided tour through the historic city.

Day 7: Ghent – Bruges (22 km/13 mi. or 45 km/28 mi.)

Today you will cycle from Ghent through the beautiful Flemish countryside of western Flanders to Bruges, widely described as the ‘Venice of the North’ and arguably the most beautiful of all the Flemish cities. Bruges attracts more than two million visitors every year who come to see the picturesque medieval town center of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic city and a long list of historic attractions. An outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, Bruges has managed to maintain its historic fabric as it has evolved over the centuries, with the result that today the city’s original Gothic buildings form an integral part of the town’s identity. While you are here you can visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

Day 8: Bruges

End of your tour: Disembarkation after breakfast until 9.30 a.m.

  • Cycling route distances in the travel program are approximate.
  • On some days you can choose between a longer and a shorter cycling route. Please note that on the shorter routes you may not be able to visit all the highlights mentioned.
  • If you prefer not to cycle on a particular day, you’re welcome to stay on board and relax while the ship cruises to the next landing place.
  • The tour itinerary and route are subject to possible changes due to nautical, technical or meteorological reasons, or other unforeseen events.
  • On the arrival day, you can leave your luggage on board the ship from 11.00 am.
  • Detailed cycling maps, route tips and a GPS app are available for guests who wish to cycle individually and at their own pace. The tour guide is always available via cell phone in case of questions, breakdowns or emergencies.

Day to day program Bruges to Amsterdam

Day 1: Bruges (15 km/9 mi.)

Embarkation time in Bruges is between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The ship awaits you in the Bruges harbor. After a welcome meeting with the crew at 2 PM there is time for bicycle fitting and a short test-ride through the countryside around Bruges. After dinner the guide will take you for a short walk through the center of town.

We advise you to come to Bruges one or more days earlier, so that you will have plenty of time to discover the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical city of Bruges, aptly named the “Pearl of Flanders”. While you are there make sure you visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

Day 2: Bruges – Ghent (35 km/21 mi. or 57 km/36 mi.)

You will start your first day of cycling by pedaling towards Ghent through the beautiful Flemish landscape along the Ghent canal. On arrival in Ghent make sure you make the effort to discover the best of what this historical city has to offer during an afternoon stroll. Ghent’s medieval center features lovely illuminated streets that are a must to explore, while the architectural richness in the center of the city has to be seen to be believed. During the Middle Ages Ghent was the 2nd largest European city, after Paris. The ship will dock for the night at a lock, in a suburb of Ghent and approx. 30 cycling minutes from the city center. Before dinner a small canal boat will take you for a guided tour through the historic city.

Day 3: Ghent – Dendermonde/St. Amands (40 km/24 mi. or  53 km/32 mi.)

In the morning you will spend some time in Ghent. Later in the morning you will cycle downstream through a diverse landscape along the tidal Schelde River to Dendermonde located at the confluence of Dender and Schelde rivers. There is only one way to describe the landscape along the Schelde and that is: “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour. During this section of the Schelde the speed of the ship will be determined by the height of the tide. You will travel from Dendermonde to St. Amands by either bicycle or barge depending on the tides. Your floating hotel will be docked for the night in St. Amands.

Day 4: St. Amands – Temse –  Antwerp (32 km/19 mi. or 49 km/31 mi.)

Today we will follow the Schelde river further downstream through the Temse region to Antwerp. Over the centuries the Schelde river has held strategic importance for the Romans, Vikings, Spanish and Napoleon… Today it is a beautiful waterway just perfect for bike and barge holidays!  Antwerp, your destination for the day, is a harbor city famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and as the birthplace of the famous painter Sir Peter Paul Rubens. There are many highlights in the city to discover including: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle.

Day 5: Antwerp – Kreekrak locks | Kreekrak locks – Tholen (36 km/23 mi. or 20 km/13 mi.) | Tholen – Willemstad – Dordrecht

This morning, the ship will sail along the Schelde-Rhine Canal and over the huge Kreekrak lock system. Here your bicycle tour starts through the beautiful “Wouwse Plantage” forest to Tholen, Tholen once was an island in the middle of the large Zeeland streams, where many people fished for their living. Nowadays Tholen is connected to the mainland in various ways. But it is still a picturesque village with many relics of an eventful past. From Tholen you will join the ship again for a nice afternoon sail to the city of Dordrecht. Halfway the ship will pass the impressive Volkerak lock system.

Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands is your destination for the day. The guide will take you for an evening walk and tell you about the history of the Netherlands.

Day 6: Dordrecht – Kinderdijk | Kinderdijk – Schoonhoven – Vianen (32 km/19 mi. or 57 km/36 mi.)

Today you will start your tour with the “Waterbus”, a fast ferry that will take you and your bicycle in just 10 minutes to Alblasserdam. After just a few minutes of cycling you will reach Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 UNESCO cultural heritage-listed windmills – one of which you can visit (don’t forget your camera!). The windmills were constructed in the 18th century to pump water out of the low Alblasserwaard polder (a polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments). You will then continue to cycle via Schoonhoven to Vianen, a small fortified town on the river Lek (Lower Rhine), where you will stay for the night and where you can explore at your leisure after dinner.

Day 7: Vianen – Breukelen | Breukelen – Amsterdam (36 km/23 mi. or 46 km/28 mi.)

During breakfast the ship will cruise to Breukelen where you disembark to start your final day of cycling. Ride along the Vecht River in an area famous for its beautiful mansions, small castles, impressive houses and their large gardens. After cycling through the villages of Nieuwersluis, Loenen and Vreeland you will arrive at Nigtevecht where you can visit a traditional cheese farm. Continue cycling through the historical town of Muiden and on to Amsterdam where you will meet the barge for the final time in the Amsterdam harbor.

Day 8: Amsterdam

The bicycles of Boat Bike Tours

Always the best rental bikes.

The rental bikes on our ships are unisex bicycles with a low bar and a comfortable upright sitting position. These are stable and dependable bikes, good for miles in the saddle. Decide which kind of bike you want to rent and simply fill in your preference with your reservation. We’ll make sure you get the right bike for you. On most of our tours, the bike rental cost is not included in the tour’s price.

Every Boat Bike Tour rental bike is well equipped. The bikes consist of a lightweight aluminum frame and have highly-responsive handbrakes, at least seven speeds, an adjustable gel seat, normal flat pedals (no clips), an easy-to-use lock attached to the frame, and special puncture-resistant tires. All told, this is a light, stable and reliable bike, very suitable for touring long distances pleasantly.

Our e-bikes also have at least seven speeds and handbrakes. The motor runs on a 400Wh battery and offers three levels of power-assistance. The e-bikes include comfortable gel seats that can be adjusted for height, have a lock attached to the frame, and sport anti-puncture tires. Note that some of the ships have their own bikes on board. They may look a bit different, but qualitatively they are equal to Boat Bike Tours’s e-bikes.

Bicycle helmets The use of bicycle helmets is not required in the Netherlands, but for safety’s sake they are suggested. If you wish to rent one, you can do so during the booking process. If you book a premium tour and rent a bike or e-bike, then the helmet and a “limit of liability for damage or loss” for your bike or e-bike is included in the rental price.

Other rental items Other items such as children’s bikes, tandems, family tandems (child & adult), tag-along, trailers to carry toddlers and child seats are available on request.

Taking your own bike or e-bike? The fee for parking your own bicycle is €10 per week. For an e-bike the fee is €25 to cover parking and charging the battery. For safety reasons it is not always possible to charge your e-bike batteries in your cabin. The crew will tell you where you can charge the battery on board the ship. Neither the crew nor Boat Bike tours is responsible in any way for any damage, loss or theft of a guest’s own bike or e-bike or its accessories. Note: not all the ships are suitable or have enough room for extra bikes, so make sure you check with us well ahead of travel.

Taking your own bicycle

Guests on the deck of the Magnifique IV

Season ends on a weak note

We recently completed a tour from Amsterdam to Bruges on the Magnifique IV. While most aspects of this tour met our expectations, some were disappointing. The ship itself was excellent and the majority of the crew was friendly and professional. The rental bikes were functional but showing the wear and tear of a long rental season. They were also obviously designed to be sturdy and maintenance free rather than easy to ride. (Even on the very flat terrain I was seldom able to use the top 4 gears out of the 7). Our lead tour guide, Frans, was excellent, but his assistant Corrine really needs more training. She at times seemed to be lost even with paper maps and Ride with GPS. By her own admission, she had no clue of how to change a flat, or any mechanical aspect of the bikes. Because she seemed to be under stress, she did not handle some interactions with the tour participants very well. While our ship was being captained by Walter, the shipowner, the interface between the ship operation and the tour was quite seamless, but when Walter left and was replaced by Captain Chris, it seemed like all coordination between the two went awry. While the food on board was generally excellent, it was quite evident that some things were “running out” and not being replenished toward the end of the week, because this was the last tour of the season. I would also have liked more variety in the offerings for our packed lunches (like peanut butter) and better packaging (stretch wrap or baggies) for the routine ham and cheese sandwiches. I would like to compliment their logistical flexibility in being able to pick us up on the side of the river when we we late arriving due to a train system malfunction. We were very thankful for that. Also, the way the two ship hostesses kept everything spotless on board while also serving food and drinks, was as good as any cruise we have ever been on. They (Laura and Joline) worked tirelessly and were always very pleasant and professional. Overall, I would travel with this company again, but maybe a little earlier in the season.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your Amsterdam to Bruges tour. We appreciate your comments and are pleased to hear that most aspects of the tour met your expectations. Your input about the rental bikes, tour guides, and the transition between ship captains is noted and will help us improve. We're glad to know you enjoyed the food and the dedication of our ship hostesses, Laura and Joline. We look forward to welcoming you on another journey, perhaps earlier in the season. Best regards, Boat Bike Tours

The Captain and crew were absolutely…

The Captain and crew were absolutely wonderful. The bike tour itself was not quite a picturesque as we expected. There were times when cycling in and around vehicular traffic was uncomfortable. The ship is fabulously maintained, clean and beautiful.

Thank you for your feedback! We're glad you found the Captain and crew wonderful and enjoyed the ship's maintenance and beauty. We appreciate your comments about the bike tour experience and will use them to improve.

  • Accommodation
  • Practical info

Embarkation and check-in is between 1.30 – 2 p.m., where your crew for the week will be waiting to welcome you on board. At around 2.15 p.m. the ship will depart from Amsterdam for Vianen, a small, fortified village on the Lek River. After dinner you have the opportunity to enjoy a short first test ride through the surrounding area.

10 minutes to Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in Holland. . (32 km/19 mi. or 56 km/34 mi.)

(42 km/26 mi. or 50 km/31 mi.)

(21 km/13 mi. or 35 km/21 mi.)

This morning you will cycle out of Antwerp along a picturesque section of the Schelde River to St. Amands your home for the night. There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour.

(52km / 32 mi.)

(22 km / 13 mi. or 45 km / 28 mi.)

End of your tour: Disembarkation after breakfast until 9.30 a.m.

Fluvius The Fluvius has been a popular choice for guests for a number of years now on the cycling cruises between Amsterdam and Bruges. The former cargo barge was totally rebuilt and extended in 2003 into a luxury river cruise barge. In winter 2017-2018, four additional upper deck double cabins were realized. The Fluvius sails under Dutch flag and management. The Fluvius now caters for max. 44 passengers. Description of the cabins: The Fluvius has eighteen twin cabins and four double cabins. On the upper deck, there are three standard twin cabins (11 m² – 118 sq.ft. ) with two separate single beds and four double cabins (12 m² – 129 sq.ft. ) with a double bed (160 x 200 cm) and a large panoramic window. On the lower deck you will find fourteen standard twin cabins (11 m² – 118 sq.ft.) and one smaller twin cabin (10 m² – 108 sq.ft.), all of which have two separate single beds. On prior request, a child’s cot can be placed in two of the standard twin cabins. Each cabin has an en-suite bathroom with shower, toilet and basin. All twin cabins have a fixed window, the panoramic window in the double cabins can be opened. Each cabin has an individually adjustable air-conditioning unit, a ventilation system, a flatscreen TV and a hair dryer. Description of the ship: The Fluvius has a large lounge (air-conditioned) with TV, bar and a semi-separate restaurant area. Wi-Fi is available. The barge also has a large sun deck with sitting places (tables and chairs) and a storage room for the bikes. While cruising, you can enjoy the scenery from here. Facts about the ship Length: 69,9 m (229 ft.) Width: 5,6 m (18 ft.) Crew: 7 Cabins: 22 Pass: 44 (max.) Lena Maria After several years working on a ship, it was time for a new adventure for Eelke and his wife, Carlien. So they took over the boutique canal barge the Lena Maria, which can carry a maximum of 24 passengers. “The Lena Maria is big enough to offer high-quality accommodations and small enough to provide an intimate atmosphere”, explains Eelke. “So, people connect with each other very quickly on board. Also, we have a crew of four people, which is a lot, considering the number of guests. This way we can best take care of everyone.” Metamorphosis for the Lena Maria: Since Carlien and Eelke bought the Lena Maria, the barge has undergone a metamorphosis. “Inside, everything was brown and white. We’ve modernized that and furnished it in our own style. Everything has become brighter; there is a homey floor and we’ve added a bar. This has made the restaurant and lounge area more open and much cozier,” Eelke reports. “But I’m actually constantly busy making everything even nicer. I’ve renovated a lot of ships before and that’s just way too much fun for me,” he laughs. To the coziest places: The small size of the Lena Maria has another advantage, says Eelke. “It allows us to sail along narrow canals and dock in smaller harbors where things are really cozy. Guests are that little bit closer to the scenery. We can cruise in areas that aren’t overrun with tourists.” For example, the Lena Maria runs the Boat Bike Tours cycling cruises between Amsterdam and Bruges, the Hanseatic Tour and the Discover Friesland Tour, Eelke’s favorite. Description of the cabins: The Lena Maria has twelve spacious twin cabins (10,5 m² – 113 sq.ft.) with two separate beds. Each cabin has a private shower, toilet and basin. Windows can be opened and the cabins have individually controlled air-conditioning, ventilation and central heating. Furthermore, you will find a hair dryer in each cabin. Description of the ship: On the upper deck of the Lena Maria you will find the cozy lounge with the bar and dining area. Wi-Fi is available. The barge also has a beautiful sundeck, where you can have a drink. On nice evenings, or while cruising, you can enjoy the scenery from here. Facts about the ship Length: 45 m (148 ft.) Width: 6,6 m (22 ft.) Crew: 3 Cabins: 12 Pass.: 24 (max.) Fiep In 2000, the Fiep was converted from a cargo ship into a modern and spacious passenger ship, especially for boat and bike tours in the Netherlands and Belgium. Ten twin cabins (10 m² – 108 sq.ft.) with two separate single beds and two twin cabins (8 m² – 86 sq.ft.) with two split level beds. These twins can also be used as singles by folding up the split level bed. Each cabin has a private shower, toilet and basin. Windows can be opened and the cabins have central heating and air-conditioning. Furthermore, in each cabin you will find a mini safe and hair dryer. Description of the ship: On the upper deck, there is the air-conditioned lounge, a spacious sitting area with wide screen TV, a cozy bar and a large sundeck. Wi-Fi is available. The sundeck is the ideal place to drink a cup of coffee or an aperitif and to enjoy the scenery while cruising. The meals of excellent quality are served in the air-conditioned dining room, located on the lower deck. Facts about the ship Length: 45 m (148 ft.) Width: 6,5 m (21 ft.) Crew: 4 Cabins: 12 Pass: 24 (max.) Zwaantje The Zwaantje (little Swan) is a new built passenger barge. However, the crew or tour operators are in no way responsible for any damage, loss or theft of guests own bicycles or e-bikes. Prices of other bikes (e.g. children’s bikes, “slip streamers”/tag-a-long, tandem bicycles etc. and child’s saddles (rear) are on request.

For tours, for which Boat Bike Tours is not the organizing tour operator (but the intermediary), and another partner company is the organizing tour operator, other arrangements may apply. Please note:  For safety reasons, it is not allowed to use the rental (e-) bikes for self-arranged rides in Amsterdam: in these cases, the limitation of liability does not apply. Almost all of the rental bicycles are traditional touring bicycles (women’s models) with 7 or 8 gears, hand brakes (some with pedal brake) and pannier bags.  E-bikes feature a small electric engine and battery that assist and ease your pedaling, but they do not feature autonomous propulsion. It is like having a tailwind, so it is easier, but you still have to pedal. Please note:  all bicycles have normal pedals, no click pedals. So please wear ordinary sporting shoes. Changing pedals is not possible. Prices for other rental bicycles, like children’s bikes, tandems, trailer bikes (slip streamers), children’s seats, and bike trailers are available on request. Guests are also allowed to bring their own bicycles or E-bikes, please let us know so we can reserve a space on board for you.  However, the crew or tour operator is in no way responsible for any damage, loss or theft of such bicycles. Parking in Amsterdam (valet parking): prices and pre-booking on request. Embarking on a boat bike tour means leaving your worries behind. If you’re arriving for one of our tours by car then you can start your carefree experience immediately thanks to the CentralParking valet service. With this parking service, you can drive directly to your ship’s departure dock. Arrange a drop-off time in advance and a CentralParking valet driver will be waiting to help you with your luggage. Your valet will then drive your car to a secure garage where it will be parked under 24/7 camera surveillance. Set a pick-up time with CentralParking for your return and your car will be ready and waiting for you when the ship arrives, so you can set out on the road immediately.

8 Days, 7 Nights

Grade 1 (Very Easy)

A linear cycling holiday featuring accommodation on board the brand new premium Dutch barge, MS Magnifique III, packed full of classic city and countryside treasures including Bruges, Ghent, Dendermonde, Antwerp, historic Dordrecht, Kinderdijk’s row of time-honoured windmills and cosmopolitan canal city, Amsterdam. When it comes to experiencing the jewels of Holland and Flanders from a different perspective, nothing beats the combination of pedalling the polderland paths and taking in the lowland views from on board your luxurious floating home.

Due to navigation conditions, the exact details of itineraries/embarkation points may be modified at the discretion of the boat’s Captain. All overnights are on board your floating accommodation, the MS Magnifique III. Details of the transits to the next destination are outlined in the itinerary below but may be subject to change.

Day 1 All aboard in Bruges!

Join the MS Magnifique III moored in central Bruges and settle in to your floating accommodation on board this classic premium Dutch barge in the early afternoon, before heading out to explore the extensive sights of beautiful Bruges, the ‘Pearl of Flanders’, the ‘Venice of the North’ and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Graze the fine art offerings at the Groenigemuseum or climb the 83m tower of the famous belfry, the ‘Belfort’, to drink in the views. There’s time to shop for lace, fine chocolate or even take in the ‘Choco Story’ museum or ‘Frietmuseum’ (yes, a whole museum dedicated to chips!). To help you get the most out of your afternoon and evening in this enchanting city, there is a guided visit included in the tour price. You are free to take supper at your leisure in Bruges.

Overnight mooring – Bruges

Day 2 Eastward ho! En route to glorious Ghent

Your floating accommodation heads out early along the canals of Bruges to stop off outside the city. Here’s where you saddle up and your first gentle cycling adventure begins, as you pedal away across the flat West Flanders terrain towards the historic university city of Ghent. Although more modest than Bruges, Ghent is a vibrant place which combines wonderful flourishes of medieval architecture with refreshing contemporary culture and even has Roman roots. Climb up the ‘Gravensteen’ – the 12th century ‘Castle of the Count’ built by Phillip of Alsace – for great city and River Leie from its round towers and battlements. There’s plenty of time to explore the wonders of city centre including the impressive façades of the ‘Graslei’ area and the fine works by Van Eyck in St Bavo’s Cathedral before you meet back up for dinner with the MS Magnifique III at Merelbeke lock in the city suburbs.

Overnight mooring – Ghent (Merelbeke)

Miles  28   Kms   45

Day 3 Going with the flow to Dendermonde

The tidal River Schelde sets the pace today, with the barge’s progress governed by the river’s ebb and flow, so you may cycle off to meet MS Magnifique III in your main destination of the day – historic down of Dendermonde – or need to pedal just a few extra kilometres to catch up with the vessel in St Amands. The stretch of the Schelde downstream from Ghent makes for some super scenic cycling, so it’s a pleasure to just go with the flow and where it meets the River Dender, there are more beautiful treasures in store. Fill your panniers from the little shops here or just relax in a market place café and enjoy history’s patchwork of gabled architecture from the town hall to the belfry and the famous ‘Vleeshuis’.

Overnight mooring – St Amands.

Miles   24 – 32   Kms  40 – 53

Day 4 Onwards to Antwerp

More scenic cycling along the Schelde today as you head out via the old shipbuilding town of Temse to the impressive harbours and historic heartlands of  the ‘City of Diamonds’ itself, Antwerp. Meet back up with MS Magnifique III in the centre and enjoy an afternoon and evening exploring the city with supper in town at your leisure. The capital of the province of Flanders is Rubens’ birthplace, so don’t miss the paintings by this local Grand Master in the gothic ‘Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal’ built in 1351. There are more works by Rubens as well as Van Dyck and Brueghel the Younger at the Rockoxhuis, and the Platin-Moretus Museum is a must too, featuring the world’s oldest printing press. On top of all this, there are the medieval guildhouses around the marketplace, the charming cobbled streets and glittering prizes of the Diamond Quarter to discover too.

Overnight mooring – Antwerp.

Miles   25   Kms   42

Day 5 More secrets to unlock

Another day to go with the flow, with the Skipper of the MS Magnifique III deciding on the cycling stretches of the day, according to the dictates of the waterways for today it is time to wonder at the amazing engineering behind the canals and flatlands of Flanders and Holland. For starters, the MS Magnifique III cruises along the Schelde-Rhine Canal to negotiate the mighty Kreekrak lock complex en route to the former fishing village of Tholen in the province of Zeeland.  From here, there’s a cycling stretch along the impressive Volkerak locks to Willemstad in North Brabant, a fascinating town enclosed in a star-shaped layout of Napoleonic-style fortifications. Look out for the Mauritshuis, once the hunting lodge of Maurits of Orange; the ‘d’Orangemolen’ a charming windmill by the marina and the round Koepelkerk, as well as the old arsenal and gunpowder stores. Dordrecht is the final destination of the day – to be reached perhaps by bike or by barge from Willemstad. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and known as the ‘Island on the Dort’, it is bordered by no less than five rivers and is a great place for the night’s mooring.

Overnight mooring – Dordrecht

Miles   15-28   Kms   25-45

Day 6 Well, blow me down!

It wouldn’t do to think that if you’ve seen one windmill, you’ve seen them all…nothing can prepare you for the Kinderdijk, the designated UNESCO World Heritage Site where there are nineteen of them in a row! MS Magnifique III will deliver you right into this amazing windmill country, so you can disembark and visit one of these mighty mills which have been pumping out the water from the low Ablasserwaaard polder since the 18th century. Saddle up next and pedal off to Schoonhaven with its majestic medieval town hall, city walls and rows of narrow gabled houses lining the waterside. A super-wealthy place to be in the 17th century, home to skilled silversmiths and clockmakers, it’s still known locally as ‘Silver City’ today. Don’t miss the impressive town clock or the glittering prizes in the museum dedicated to the Dutch silvertrade before pedalling on to Vianen, an attractive small town on the River Lek with fortifications and a 15th century brick gateway.

Overnight mooring – Vianen

From Vianen, the day starts with a cruise to Breukelen in the province of Utrecht, where you pedal off along the little River Vecht through an area renowned for fine country mansions and castles with extensive gardens and parkland, built by wealthy 17th century merchant families from Amsterdam. Get a taste for the small villages, like Nieuwersluis, Loenen and Vreeland or the local cheese museum perhaps at Nigtvecht. Your final cycling stretch into Amsterdam to meet MS Magnifique III in the harbour, takes in the charming towns of Abcoude and Ouderkerk on the River Amstel. Finally enjoy some time in the lively city of Amsterdam itself, choosing from galleries and museum, great shopping opportunities, time taking in the atmosphere along the canals and cobbled streets.

Electric Bike

An electric bike is available on request. A supplement applies, see below.

Electric bikes, or e-bikes, are designed to make cycling easier. The pedaling ‘boost’ provided by an e-bike opens up more options, allowing people of different fitness levels to cycle together or for cyclists to take on routes they may otherwise consider too tough for their current fitness capabilities. Please note that e-bikes are heavier than normal bikes and given the higher speed possible, should only be ridden by confident cyclists. Minimum age for e-bike rental is 12 years and a minimum height requirement is 150cm / 4ft11in.

introductory

INTRODUCTORY - GRADE 1 The cycling is introductory (1) grade with daily cycling distances from 15 to 64km (9 to 39mi). As with all of our cycling programs, wind and poor weather could make the trip grade change. Should you not wish to cycle there are walking options available. The accent is on keeping a relaxed pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos, visit a museum or enjoy the market places in many of the interesting towns visited. It is considered suitable for children, as long as they have road sense, are familiar with the workings of a bike (gear change etc) and are comfortable cycling alongside moving vehicles at times. Electric bikes are available for a supplement and when used will ensure the cycling is comfortable for less physical cyclists - however it is still essential that you are comfortable cycling on roads and in light traffic in variable weather conditions. *For safety reasons, we highly recommend that cycle helmets are worn during cycle sections.

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

Day 1: Bruges – Aalterbrug – cruise to Ghent (13 miles/21 km) When you arrive on board your ship (between 12:30-1:30 pm), you can put your luggage in your cabin and settle down for a cup of tea or coffee. It's a great moment to become acquainted with your guide, skipper, crew, and of course, your fellow passengers. At 2:00 pm, you'll start off from the city walls of Bruges towards Ghent. The barge will mostly be following the canal between Bruges and Ghent to Aalterbrug.

At 2:00 pm, You will cycle along the canal from Bruges to Ghent. Easy riding on towpaths and quiet roads. At Aalterbrug the barge picks you up and sails to the bustling city Ghent. During dinner aboard the ship, the program for the next day and the global planning of the week are discussed. Instructions on cycling and safety procedures will also be given. Overnight in Ghent.

Day 2: Rest day in Ghent Ghent wears its history like a badge of honor, boasting a vibrant tapestry of well-preserved guilds, patricians' houses, and ancient landmarks. The Gravensteen, a medieval castle, stands as a formidable relic, while the St Nicholas Church and St Bavo's Cathedral, rooted in 13th-century foundations, echo the city's enduring past. The 'Belfort' (Belfry), a 14th-century marvel, completes this historical ensemble.

Yet, Ghent transcends the confines of a mere museum town. Its lively spirit emanates from numerous squares and cozy pubs, creating a delightful fusion of medieval grandeur, stylish shopping streets, splendid mansions, and the charming working-class quarters of the early 20th century—now often inhabited by students. Picture busy little squares where the air is filled with the joyous chatter of people dining until the late hours on warm summer nights.

For a different perspective, hop on a bike with your guide(optional). Explore the silent witnesses of Destelbergen's history, where castles and luxurious villas line the landscape, narrating tales of the municipality's rich heritage along the serene banks of the river Scheldt, just a stone's throw away from the heart of Ghent. Overnight in Ghent.

Day 3: Ghent – Middelburg (28 miles/45 km) Today you'll leave Belgium and arrive in the Netherlands. During breakfast, the ship will cruise to Sas van Gent from where you'll depart to cycle through the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Dutch-Flanders). Enjoy a short ferry trip from Breskens to Vlissingen (Flushing), crossing the Westerschelde. From Vlissingen, it's just 30 more minutes of cycling to reach Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland.

Modern Middelburg has regained as well as preserved much of its historic and picturesque character. You'll discover lavish 17th- and 18th-century merchant houses and storehouses standing along the canals and a medieval abbey that's still in use today as a museum and seat of provincial government. Overnight in Middelburg.

Day 4: Middelburg – Zierikzee (31 miles/50 km) Start today with a ride to the town of Veere, formerly an important center for trade. From Veere, you'll cycle over the Veersgatdam (with the possibility of a beach visit here) to North Beveland. Soon, you'll reach the Oosterscheldedam. The enormous locks are built in this embankment and can be closed during storms and high tides to protect the south-west of the Netherlands from the sea. This embankment was one of the last in a series of barriers built against the ocean. When cycling along the embankment, you'll see why protecting the country now and in the future, and letting seawater into the widespread Delta area, has been one of the most difficult and costly challenges for the Netherlands. This is precisely why the Deltaworks are referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. After visiting the dam, you'll continue pedaling to Zierikzee. Overnight in Zierikzee.

Day 5: Zierikzee – Willemstad – cruise to Dordrecht (34 miles/55 km) Enjoy cycling on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland towards Bruinisse. This village is known to be a very isolated community, where the main source of income is the mussel fishery - as you cycle along the dike to the Grevelingen, you'll find a statue of an opened mussel.

From here, you'll continue your ride towards Willemstad (an old fortified town). In Willemstad, you will board the ship and cruise to Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities in Holland, located at the crossroads of busy waterways. Overnight in Dordrecht.

Day 6: Dordrecht – cruise to Gorinchem – cycle to Vianen (31 miles/50 km) In the morning, you'll sail from Dordrecht to Gorinchem where you'll visit Woudrichem (an old fortified town) and the most famous castle in the Netherlands - Loevestein.

Afterwards, you'll follow the meandering River Linge through the Betuwe. This area is known for its large number of verdant orchards and will be covered in blossom in the months of April and May. Along the city of Leerdam, famous for its glass, you'll continue your tour northwards towards Vianen. Overnight in Vianen.

Day 7: Vianen – cruise to Breukelen – cycle to Amsterdam (25 miles/40 km) During breakfast, you'll cruise to Breukelen and cycle onwards to Amsterdam via the Vecht and Amstel, Holland's two most beautiful rivers. Along the route, you'll catch sight of magnificent country mansions with splendid, well-kept gardens dating back to the 18th century. After dinner, there's the option to take a canal cruise through iconic Amsterdam, famous for its wonderful waterways. Overnight in Amsterdam.

Day 8: Amsterdam End of the tour and disembarkation after breakfast (before 10:00 am). Don't want the adventure to end? Consider taking a cycling day tour in Amsterdam to maximize your experience in this iconic Dutch city.

This itinerary is subject to change with no notice.

Great tour!

What a great way to experience the Netherlands. The country side was charming. Amsterdam was exciting. Gear place to visit.

Great way to see Belgium and Netherlands!

Being our first bike tour, we didn't know what to expect going into the tour, but we had a great time. The whole team was amazing from the first day to the last day. Having dietary restrictions, they were more than accommodating and didn't make it seem like a burden. All the stops along the way were great and our guide was so knowledgeable. Can't wait to do another one!

Can’t wait to go on another trip! The barge was comfortable, food tasty, guide and staff wonderful and I really enjoyed the whole itinerary. The fortified cities shaped like stars were so unique and I enjoyed sailing on the boat, enjoying a happy hour glass on the deck after a long day biking.

Bruge to Amsterdam by Bike & Boat

I loved seeing Belgium and Netherlands by the calm pace of the bike and barge. It was exciting to see and experience the cities, small towns and villages, countryside, canals, forests, and farms & communities where people lived. The barge was comfortable, staff was great and the food on the barge was fabulous. I would definitely consider another trip by bike and barge.

Bike & Barge Tour

My husband and I both had a great time on our tour. We biked from Brugge to Amsterdam. Our guide was knowledgeable, the food was fabulous and we enjoyed getting to know the other bikers as we traveled through beautiful country. We highly recommend.

Great bike and boating trip!

Our guide Seitse was terrific - very knowledgeable about the areas and routes. The crew on board Sailing Home made us feel very welcome and the food was excellent. The riding was quite pleasant (very flat almost everywhere) such that we rarely turned on our ebikes. Overall, it was a great way to see parts of Belgium and the Netherlands.

Terrific introduction to bike touring

From the first moment to the last we had a great time. Thirteen riders and a great guide made for a splendid week touring the countryside between Brugge and Amsterdam. The pace was perfect with plenty of stops for food and drink. Our boat was nicely appointed and the on board chef made a different gourmet meal every night. We recommend a guided tour though we haven't tried a self guided tour yet.

excellent bike adventure

Our barge crew was excellent, the group was wonderful and special, the food was very good and the trip a wonderful entry into bike and barging. Looking forward to more cycling and barging trips in the future.

We're glad you had a great time on tour. Thank you very much for your picture and your review!

Excellent format - Barge Bike tour

Very enjoyable tour. Excellent crew. Excellent food. Excellent company. It is a good mixture of bike & barge travel. The cycling is gentle and Holland is flat. It is good to have a guide as it is impossible to get lost. Cycle routes in Belgium & Holland are very well organised, safe with minimum traffic and great scenery. Would recommend it. Note cabins are small.

BikeTours.com staff reply from Brittany October 3, 2017

Great Bike and Barge

The guide and barge crew were wonderful and very helpful and understanding. It was a great way to see the Low Countries. I would suggest they upgrade the quality of the bicycles.

Excellent cycle tour

Such a great way to experience a country! Easy cycling with great sights and experiences. The group wasn't too big, the boat was comfortable and the food was healthy and delicious. The guide kept us moving along excellent trails and he found good places for us to lunch. All the sights he stopped at were very interesting.

(Would like to add a photo but can't)

Discovering the Natherlands

Excellent value, great tour, excellent food! We will gladly do another one of these small group tours one day. The group was a great size to give the opportunity to get to know each member of the group. Wonderful places and scenery.

Great scenery, great boat and easy biking

The food on the boat was terrific, our guide provided wonderful walking tours of the towns and cities and at the end of the day, we can rest, sitting on the top deck of the boat, and look at the views.

Excellent--Exceeded My Expectations

Everything was perfect on the Liza Marleen. Captain Els set the tone that was professional and relaxing. Chef Mariah's culinary creations were inventive and delicious. Guide Bert's attention ensured a carefree day of riding. And then there was the scenery! Riding was easy and the distance perfect (30-is miles a day) made for days I will remember for a long time. Room was more comfortable than many boats similar size with AC and fabulous showers.

Bikes and Boats! And Lots More!

Comfortable bikes and idyllic rides. The Liza Marleen was a comfortable barge with great staff. Food terrific. A wonderful combination of touring and history, city walks and countryside explorations.

Bruges Canal Tours: Everything You Need To Know

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

During our recent family trip to Europe, Abby and I took a  day trip from Brussels to Bruges , a beautiful town in Belgium. We both wanted to go on one of the legendary Bruges canal tours. I’m so glad we did! This fairytale European city needs to be on your bucket list!

Where is Bruges?

Bruges is a serene small Flemish town just northwest of  Brussels . Visiting Bruges is a perfect day trip from Brussels and is easily accessible by train.

Bruges is known as an idyllic small European city steeped in historical charm. It’s home to gorgeous canals and many fascinating landmarks. Furthermore, The city also has many great restaurants, pubs, and street-side vendors.

Visiting Bruges, Belgium

If you are visiting Brussels for a few days, taking an extra day to go to Bruges is well worth the time. Its gorgeous canals winding along against ancient stone buildings have led Bruges to be called the “Venice of the North.”

In this blog post, I want to provide information about taking a Bruges canal tour, highlight the city’s history, and discuss some landmarks you’ll likely see on these Bruges canal tours.

Getting to Bruges from Brussels

From Bruges, you just need to hop on the Belgium intercity train. You can board directly from one of the main Brussels train stations, including Bruxelles-Nord (Brussels North), Bruxelles-Central (Brussels Central), and Bruxelles-Midi (Brussels South).

The Brussels to Bruges train runs all day, and the ride is just over an hour.

The Belgium train website has a  dedicated page for the Brussels to Bruges train route , which is a great resource. You can buy tickets from that page as well.

The route trip Brussels to Bruges train tickets are a standard € 32.00 for adults. However, there are a lot of discounted ticket options listed as well, and most are € 17.50 or less.

The Bruges Canal Tours

Once you arrive in Bruges, you should have a game plan for your canal tour. It’s helpful to know a little bit about the city's layout.

Bruges rests within a mesh of several canals that penetrate and encircle the city. These canals ultimately allow boat access to the North Sea, located about 20 kilometers north of the city. The town’s access to the North Sea made Bruges a vital shipping hub for centuries.

The canals lining the town are relatively inaccessible as they are flanked everywhere by houses and other structures. Because of this, there are only a few places, other than bridges, where you can see the canals.

Therefore, the best way to see these picturesque canals is on a boat tour!

Planning Bruges Canal Tours

There are five landing stages along the canals. These are the only places you can embark on a canal tour. The routes and prices are generally the same across the different tour operators. There are several canal tour operators, each with their own open-air boats.  They pretty much all follow the same route, so in my opinion, the best Bruges canal tour is the one with the shortest line.

Bruges Canal Tour Boarding Locations

Boarding takes place at the following locations. Each tour operator will leave from a different location, so be sure to check their website.

  •  Michielssens, Huidenvettersplein 13
  •  Coudenys, Rozenhoedkaai
  •  De Meulemeester, Wollestraat 32
  •  Gruuthuse, Nieuwstraat 11
  •  Stael, Katelijnestraat 4

Scroll around the above map of Bruges to get a lay of the land!

The Bruges Canal Tour boat trip takes around 30 minutes. The boats typically operate between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, with 5:30 often being the last tour. Tours generally operate most of the year, except in January and early February.

However, tour availability will vary by operator and may change based on events like municipal construction projects, canal restoration initiatives, and severe weather.

Bruges Canal Tours Tickets

Unlike the  canal tours in Amsterdam  and the  Seine River cruises in Paris , you cannot book Bruges canal tour tickets in advance. You buy your tickets directly from the tour companies at the landing stages. As of writing this, the Bruges Canal Tour price for adult tickets is € 12.00, and children’s tickets are € 7.00.

You may need to wait in line at the landing stages to purchase tickets. The canal tours are very popular and will get busy. Bruges has an active cruise ship industry (Norwegian, Holland America, Windstar, Celebrity), and the town will fill up with  cruise  passengers on day excursions.

The extra traffic means lines for the canal tours will get longer after about 11 am. Before 11 am is the best time to ensure you have shorter lines. It also gives you the rest of the day to explore Bruges.

TIP: Get in line for your canal tour as early as possible in Bruges.

Private canal tours are also available. Several companies offer tours with different types of boats. Contact the companies directly to find out more.

There are a couple of great s mall-group Bruges canal tours available through Get Your Guide . They also include a Bruges walking tour. These are a great option if you want to be able to buy Bruges canal tour tickets in advance.

Other Things to Consider

During the canal tour, the boat guide will comment on the significant landmarks and history of the area. During our  day trip to Bruges , our canal tour guide did a great job narrating the tour and pointing out interesting areas, landmarks, and historical sights. Most guides can speak multiple languages and will do their best to tailor the language to the passengers’ needs.

The boats are cash-only. Be sure to bring a few Euros to tip your tour guide.

If you want to take pictures, try to be at the front, back, or side of the boat. Most of the boats have a line of seats down the middle, but people may block your pictures if you sit there.

The boats are open-air and uncovered, so be sure to wear your sunscreen! Also, the tours can get pretty chilly, depending on the time of year, so bring a jacket. We love the  Amazon Essentials packable jackets  for our travels.

It’s always helpful to know the history and significance of a city prior to visiting. So, I want to take some time here to talk more in-depth about Bruges and, of course, the canals. Then, I will share some of the incredible landmarks that you will see from your Bruges canal tour.

The History Of Bruges And Its Canals

Bruges has witnessed a remarkable evolution over the centuries. Its history encapsulates the ebb and flow of urban development, from its Viking origins to a flourishing medieval center, economic decline, and eventual modern-day revival.

The city’s tremendous ability to adapt to changing circumstances and preserve its cultural heritage is a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Danish people across time.

Origins of Bruges, Belgium

The origin of Bruges can be traced to the 9th century when Vikings established a fortress on the banks of the Reie River. The name “Bruges” is believed to be derived from the Old Dutch word “Burg,” meaning fortress. The city gradually developed into a bustling medieval trade center due to its strategic location and access to the North Sea.

The Golden Era of Bruges

Bruges experienced its golden era during the late medieval period, particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city became a major commercial and cultural hub, attracting merchants, artists, and scholars across Europe.

Bruges's thriving wool and textile industry and sophisticated network of canals contributed to its prosperity. It was home to the influential Bourse, one of the earliest stock exchanges in the world.

Bruges Economic Decline

Despite its flourishing period, Bruges faced economic challenges in the 16th century. The silting of the Zwin, a vital waterway for trade, led to a decline in maritime activity, impacting Bruges’ economy.

Additionally, geopolitical shifts and the rise of other European trading centers contributed to the city's gradual decline in prominence.

Modern Times and Revival of Bruges

For several centuries, Bruges endured a period of relative obscurity. However, in the 19th century, efforts were made to preserve its medieval architecture, and the city gained recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.

The 20th century saw a revival in Bruges’ fortunes, with tourism becoming a key driver of its economy. The city’s well-preserved medieval structures, including the Belfry of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, attract millions of visitors annually.

What Do You See on the Bruges Canal Tours?

During the Bruges canal tours, your tour guide will highlight many fascinating landmarks. Each place gives you a window into the long history of this amazing city.

Like many European cities, it’s steeped in lore that spans epochs, and seemingly every bridge or building has a colorful and long legacy.

Here is a list of many sites you will probably see on the Bruges canal tours.

Founded in 1245, the Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde boasts serene white-colored house fronts and a tranquil convent garden.

This UNESCO World Heritage site was once the residence of beguines—emancipated laywomen leading pious and celibate lives. Today, the beguinage is home to the Order of St. Benedict nuns.

Saint John’s Hospital

With an eight-hundred-year history, Saint John’s Hospital has cared for pilgrims, travelers, the poor, and the sick. Explore the medieval wards where nuns and monks practiced mercy, the chapel, and a remarkable collection of archives, artworks, medical instruments, and six paintings by Hans Memling.

Church of Our Lady

The Church of Our Lady showcases Bruges’ artisans’ craftsmanship through its 115.5 meters high brick tower. The church has valuable art, including Michelangelo’s renowned Madonna and Child, numerous paintings, 13th-century painted crypts, and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold. Abby and I visited after our canal tour, and it was incredible!

Groeninge Museum

Offering a diverse overview of Belgian plastic arts history, the Groeninge Museum features Flemish Primitives, 18th and 19th-century neoclassical pieces, Flemish Expressionism masterpieces, and post-war modern art.

Ambachtshuis Huidevetters

Built by hide tanners, this craft house near Rozenhoedkaai has two wings. The north wing, demolished in 1629, was replaced in 1630 under the guidance of Bruges architect Jan De Smet. The building was restored in 1912. It has been used as a fishmonger and stockfish farm since the mid-19th century.

Belfry & Carillon

Bruges’ tallest tower, the Belfry, standing 83 meters tall, houses a melodic carillon with 47 bells. Climbing its 366 steps rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view of Bruges and its surroundings.

Fish Market

Originally located at Markt Square, the fish market was moved here in the 18th century due to complaints about the stench. Since the Middle Ages, buyers and sellers have come together at the Bruges fish market. Fresh saltwater fish, once a luxury, is still sold every morning from Wednesday to Saturday.

These small whitewashed almshouses, dating back to the 14th century, are scattered around Bruges. Wealthy townspeople or guilds established almshouses to house poor older adults or widows. Over 46 blocks have been preserved, with 43 still occupied.

Burghers’ Lodge

Situated on Jan Van Eyckplein, the Poortersloge (Burgher’s Lodge) served as a meeting spot for the Society of the White Bear in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Later, it became the city’s Academy of Arts (1720-1890) and the State Archives (1912-2012).

Visiting Bruges: The “Venice of the North”

Visiting Bruges to take one of the Bruges canal tours is a fantastic way to add something special to your trip to Belgium. Its quaint stone houses, romantic canals, cobbled streets, cookies, waffles, and chocolate make it a bucket-list destination to take friends and family of any age.

The iconic canals are a dream for photographers. Travel to and around the city is simple and inexpensive. And as you can tell by this post, Bruges canal tours should be on your list. I recommend this trip to everyone!
