Things to see and do on the Heart of Wales Line

There’s so much to see and do along the 121 miles (195km) of the Heart of Wales railway line, it’s hard to know where to start. So let us explain why this line is so special, and why you should add it to your list of days out in Wales.

About the Heart of Wales Line

For over 150 years the railway has snaked through the lush hinterlands of Mid and West Wales. It links Shropshire to South Wales via spa towns, remote rural villages and wildlife-filled estuaries.

The trains currently run up to four times a day along the single track line. Don’t expect a high-speed train ride. Knighton (the first station in Wales) to Swansea takes around three hours, giving you plenty of time to sit back, relax and enjoy the views.

Several of the 29 stations along the route have been ‘adopted’ by enthusiastic volunteers from the local communities. They take a lot of pride in ‘their’ railway, and this shines through with colourful flower beds and tidy stations along the way.

Things to see and do

The line follows a scenic, meandering route through the beautiful green hillsides of Powys, before heading into Carmarthenshire towards the coast. The railway tunnels under Sugar Loaf mountain, crossing the valley over the magnificent Cynghordy Viaduct, before reaching Llandovery and Llandeilo in the Tywi Valley. From there it’s over to Ammanford and Pontarddulais, then alongside the wide Loughor Estuary to Llanelli and Swansea.

The stations provide easy access to heritage sites and outdoor activities, as well as unique and colourful market towns to visit. Back in the day, the Victorians loved a good spa town for a relaxing holiday. There’s a choice of four along the Heart of Wales Line route, each with its own character and attractions.

Days out exploring towns and villages

Knighton , a traditional market town, is a meeting point for many walks – Offa’s Dyke Path, Glyndwr’s Way and the Heart of Wales Line Trail. Discover the history of the area at Knighton Museum , or follow the town history trail . The Offa’s Dyke Centre has information about the origins of Offa’s Dyke and the Trail. From outdoor space to actual outer space, check out the Spaceguard Centre , a couple of miles out of the town.

Knighton, Powys, Mid Wales

Stop off at Llandrindod Wells for the Victorian spa town experience. Enjoy a day ambling around the town’s history trail, visiting the Radnorshire Museum , the Cycling Museum , and paddle boating on the lake. Follow up by chilling out in the Victorian-built Metropole Hotel’s Rock Spa. Quackers Play Barn in nearby Newbridge-on-Wye is perfect for entertaining the kids.

If you’re feeling active, walk the Heart of Wales Line Trail to nearby Pen-y-bont. Here you'll find the Thomas Shop – a nostalgic museum and wool emporium.

Just down the line is Builth Road station, for Builth Wells , however it is a couple of miles out of Builth so you may need to get a taxi or a bus to the town. Builth is known for the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show every July, but there’s plenty to do all year round. Llangammarch Wells is a small spa town, now popular for fishing and outdoors activities. Walkers, horse riders and cyclists can access the Epynt Way from here.

Builth Wells, Powys, Mid Wales

Llanwrtyd Wells is renowned for its year-round unusual sporting trials, including the legendary World Bog Snorkelling Championship . There’s a huge events list throughout the year, but it’s worth a visit just for the Neuadd Arms brewery and the Llanwrtyd and District Heritage and Arts Centre .

Once you get to Llandovery town centre, you’ll discover welcoming hostelries and independent shops full of local produce. Llandovery Museum and Visitor Gateway is a great place to visit, and Llandovery Castle is a short walk away.

Llandeilo is a shopper’s paradise. The buzzing town centre is a short walk from the station. Spend a pleasant few hours exploring the locally owned shops discovering handmade crafts, galleries, antiques and designer clothes. Check out the award-winning local produce from the fabulous delis and butchers - then head to nearby Dinefwr Park and Castle for a picnic.

Some of the best views on the line are along the wildlife-filled Loughor Estuary. You can get off at Pontarddulais or Bynea stations and take a low or high tide level Heart of Wales Line Trail route along the estuary to Llanelli, depending on the tide.

The line curves west to Llanelli , where the train stops, then it reverses east along the track towards Swansea.

Once you’re at Llanelli, head to the  WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre . They have plenty for the whole family to enjoy. If you’d rather rest your legs, Parc Howard Museum and Art Gallery has loads of information about Llanelli’s industrial history and a fabulous display of Llanelli pottery and fine art.

The Heart of Wales Line Trail meets the Wales Coast Path here. The family-friendly, accessible, award-winning Millennium Coastal Park is perfect for cycling and walking to explore more of the beautiful coastline.

The final stop is Swansea, with onward rail connections to Cardiff or West Wales . Our city by the sea, Swansea has a lovely beach around a curving bay, several museums, galleries and a university city vibe.

Walking breaks

If you enjoy walking then you're in for a treat. The long-distance Heart of Wales Line Trail roughly follows the railway line. It's been designed so you can access the trail from most stations. Parts of the trail follow forest footpaths and mountain tracks, so you’ll get amazing views over the Tywi Valley , Carmarthenshire Fans and the Brecon Beacons. The route passes though ancient villages, including Myddfai , and via heritage sites including the magnificent Castell Carreg Cennen . The full trail takes around 10 days to complete if you attempt it in one go.

The trail goes through remote countryside a lot of the time, so if you don’t fancy walking it solo then check out local walking groups (details below) for organised days out. There's a useful Ramble and Scramble list of self-guided family-friendly walks available.

The trail also links to other long-distance paths: Shropshire Way , Offa’s Dyke Path , Glyndwr’s Way , Wye Valley Walk , Cambrian Way , Beacons Way and the Wales Coast Path .

Walking groups

There are several friendly Ramblers groups in Carmarthenshire and Powys , who regularly head out on guided walks along the Heart of Wales Line Trail.

The Rail Rambles group offer guided walks starting from railway stations in Mid Wales and the Borders on most Saturdays.

Cycling holidays

The Sustrans website has details of road routes linked up by the stations, including the long distance Route 8 and the epic Sustrans Radnor Ring through Llandrindod Wells.

Carmarthenshire is a brilliant choice for cycling holidays. Base yourself in Llandovery or Llanelli, and use the train to access coastal family-friendly trails and  impressive circular rides exploring castles and culture.

You can take bikes on the train, but it's best to book in advance via the Transport for Wales website .

Adventure Smart UK has plenty of advice on how to ‘make a good day better’, and we recommend you read it before planning your active day out.

Useful information

Find train times and buy tickets from the Transport for Wales website. Traveline Cymru is a useful public transport journey planner.

Many of the stations are request stops. If you want to get off at one of these stations, ask the Conductor when you get on, so they know to stop the train for you.

If you'd like to tackle the whole line over a day or two, the Heart of Wales Line Circular ticket lets you do a circuit between Shrewsbury, Swansea, Cardiff and up the borders line. It’s only valid on Transport for Wales trains so check your train times carefully.

Heart of Wales railway line - ‘Best in Europe’

29 feb 2024.

World famous travel guide Lonely Planet has named the Heart of Wales railway line as one of the best rail journeys in Europe.

Lein Calon Cymru - ‘Y Gorau yn Ewrop’

Described as ‘a spectrum of scenery’ that alternates ‘from the sand-edged estuaries of South Wales’ to ‘one of England’s prettiest medieval cities’, the line has been ranked amongst the top ten train rides in Europe for 2024.

Others on the prestigious list include the Le Petit Train Juane in the French Pyrenees, The Berina Express in Switzerland and The Brenner Railway passing through Germany, Austria and Italy.

Running between Swansea and Shrewsbury, a full trip on the line takes 4 hours and covers nearly 200km, passing through villages such as Llandeilo and Llandovery within the south and Craven Arms and Church Stretton further north.

Marie Daly, Chief Customer and Culture Officer at Transport for Wales said: “The Heart of Wales line is a beautiful rural railway that is popular with day trippers and walkers, it also provides vital links for the rural communities in Mid Wales and the Borders.

“It’s great to be recognised internationally by Lonely Planet and I’d encourage visitors to take a ride and enjoy the experience of dramatic mountains, forests, wild rivers and the quaint towns and villages of Shropshire, Powys, Carmarthenshire and Swansea.”

“At TfW we’re on a journey to improve public transport and also to encourage people to choose sustainable travel.  For those visiting and interested, please visit www.walesonrails.co.uk to see the many wonderful places and attractions within Wales and how they can be accessed using public transport.”

Owen Griffkin, Heart of Wales Community Rail Partnership Officer said: “It was wonderful to see the Heart of Wales Line included as one of the top ten rail journeys in Europe. We are very proud of the railway and to see it gaining global recognition as one of the most scenic routes in Europe is something we can celebrate.

“Articles like this will drive more tourism to the area and provide economic benefits to communities all along the line, and we will be looking to capitalise on this in our next Community Rail Partnership activity plan.”

Dramatic Heart of Wales launches group travel itineraries

heart travel wales

THE DRAMATIC Heart of Wales – the tourism team at Neath Port Talbot Council – recently attended the British Tourism and Travel Show [BTTS] to mark the launch of  group travel itineraries designed to welcome more visitors to the region.

BTTS ran from 20 – 21st March at the NEC, Birmingham. Taking a stand on the Visit Wales pavilion, the Dramatic Heart of Wales team met hundreds of tour operators, coach operators, group travel organisers, travel agents and travel trade professionals at the largest conference in the UK’s travel trade calendar.

Promoting overnight visits to Neath Port Talbot, the Show allowed the Council tourism team to launch the bespoke itineraries now offered to group travel operators.

With options for group hotels, coach parking, group-friendly activities and attractions, the itineraries can be tailored to suit group sizes and preferences, while showcasing the wonders of the Dramatic Heart of Wales’ landscape, vales and valleys.

Karleigh Davies, Visitor Economy Manager at Neath Port Talbot Council, said: “Attending the British Tourism and Travel Show was a fantastic way to officially launch the group itineraries now available. Groups of all sizes, ages and interests are welcome to explore all that this region has to offer: the area is brimming with heritage sites and hidden historic gems, as well as proud reminders of our industrial past.

heart travel wales

“As we are situated so conveniently along the M4 and A465, groups travelling into Wales by coach are encouraged to add a stop in Neath Port Talbot – whether for the full duration of their trip, or to help break up the journey further into west Wales. Accessible attractions such as Margam Country Park and Aberdulais Falls are a stone’s throw from the motorway, meaning groups could easily add a stop while ‘en route’ elsewhere.

“Although we are often seen as the underdog of Welsh tourism, our landscape offers a microcosm of Wales’ stunning landscapes. Our valleys, mountains, rivers, coastline and country parks are the jewel in south Wales’ crown, and a group trip to the region allows visitors to sample all these hallmarks of a Welsh holiday. We hope many of the group travel operators we met at BTTS will take us up on our invitation to the region, as we know our hotels, holiday homes, B&Bs, eateries and attractions would love to welcome even more tourists to Neath Port Talbot.”

To request a bespoke itinerary for your group, get in touch with the team by emailing [email protected] or calling 01792 460200.

The Dramatic Heart of Wales marketing campaign is the tourism campaign run by Neath Port Talbot Council. The aim of the campaign is to attract staying visitors and day visitors into the local area.

How We Added Nearly £1bn to the Welsh Economy

heart travel wales

GUEST COLUMN:

Andrew Hudson CEO Zip World

heart travel wales

Zip World has added almost £1 billion to the Welsh economy in the past 10 years ago.

An independent report from North Wales Tourism revealed that the attraction has contributed £941 million.

The assessment analyses commercial data, survey insights, and research findings to explore Zip World’s visitor influences, staffing levels and economic contribution to its local communities.

Andrew Hudson, Chief Executive Officer at Zip World, said the ‘huge number’ was a culmination of visitor spend across the attraction itself, accommodation and other facilities and amenities in the area including pubs and shops.

Offering a first-class experience and ‘upselling’ the local area to guests before they arrive is important to make sure visitors don’t just stay for one activity, he said.

“We thrive off domestic tourism so when we offer something that's really differentiating the market, we draw people from greater distances,” said Andrew.  “They stay for up to four to five nights on average and therefore they spend in the wider economy and everyone in tourism and hospitality benefits. It's really important that we work with local businesses.”

Andrew told Business News Wales that recruiting the right people holds the key to unlocking a great experience for visitors:

Zip World currently has eight sites across Wales and England featuring 33 different adventures. The business has already expanded into offering accommodation, and Andrew said the focus for the next five years will be to build their sites into short-stay destinations as well as continuing to invest in innovative experiences for customers.

More sites are on the horizon, with a new site in the Lake District and another in the London area. In North Wales a Responsible Adventure project will see the creation of a cable car experience as well as an electric bus network.

Kate Middleton issues her first major update on new project since cancer diagnosis

K ate Middleton has made a return to social media alongside Prince William to share an update on a project that’s close to her heart.

The Princess of Wales, 42, has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment behind the scenes after revealing her cancer diagnosis to the world in March.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Week, Middleton and William noted the psychological struggles young farmers can face as they shared a video highlighting the work Middleton has been carrying out behind closed doors.

“This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek we’ve brought together the inspirational Sam Stables from We Are Farming Minds and the brilliant Farmer Will for a very special film,” the prince and princess wrote on X and Instagram .

“Spending a day together on Sam’s farm in Hereford they chatted about mental health in the farming community, finding support and the Duchy of Cornwall’s Mental Health Strategy.”

While the mom of three doesn’t appear in the video, she and William contributed to its production.

It is believed that work on the farming project began before her diagnosis.

Fans rushed to the comments section to thank the princess for her work and unwavering dedication to the project, given her current circumstances.

“We all know Princess Kate is working behind the scene as much as she can while receiving her cancer treatment. What a woman 👏❤️,” wrote one person.

Another commented, “Prince William and Princess Kate are always on the front line to help others,” while a third added, “Amazing initiative! Thank you Princess Catherine for your care and foresight.”

The post comes two months after Middleton shared a pre-recorded video on March 22 in which she revealed her health woes to the world .

The royal said doctors discovered her cancer during a planned abdominal surgery in January, and noted that she is now in the early stages of “a course of preventative chemotherapy.”

The Post revealed that  Middleton and William “sugarcoated” her health woes  when breaking the news to their youngest son, Prince Louis, but had a more “difficult” conversation with Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

As the royal undergoes treatment, her parents, Michael, 74, and  Carole Middleton , 69,  are stepping in to support their grandchildren  during this uncertain time.

Heavy downpours on the way with thunderstorms set to lash England and Wales

Forecasters warned that hail and lightning strikes may also occur.

heart travel wales

More than an inch of rain could fall in just one hour as thunderstorms lash parts of England and Wales, forecasters have warned.

Slow-moving showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Sunday afternoon, with 20-30mm of rain due to hit.

Hail and lightning strikes may also occur, with people warned to expect possible flooding, travel delays and power cuts.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning from midday until 8pm across much of central and northern England and the north east of Wales.

A further warning was later put in place across areas of south-west England and the Home Counties, lasting from 10am to 7pm.

Forecaster Kathryn Chalk said: “There could be some disruption, especially for people travelling or out trying to enjoy the bank holiday weekend.

“So I’d say definitely keep an eye out on that. Some southern areas of England may also see a few heavy downpours, perhaps even the odd rumble of thunder as well.”

She added: “It’s just a more unsettled weather regime where the air’s unstable and with more heating in the land it helps develop a storm.”

Saturday was dry and warm for many.

A mix of “sunshine and showers” will be the case for many on bank holiday Monday, with drier conditions possible in parts of Wales, Northern Ireland and south-west England in the afternoon.

A holidaymaker from Wales performed CPR for half an hour on a fellow passenger who tragically suffered a fatal heart attack during a turbulent flight from London to Singapore. Geoff Kitchen, aged 73, experienced what was suspected to be a heart attack on the Singapore Airlines flight departing from Heathrow, which also resulted in serious injuries for seven other passengers.

Toby Pearl, a healthcare worker, was travelling with his friend Liam James-Morris on the same flight. Despite being injured himself, Toby responded to the call for help when a passenger fell seriously ill.

He navigated through broken chairs and debris to reach the patient, where he, along with other passengers, administered CPR until a doctor on board confirmed Mr Kitchen's death.

The duo, from the Abergavenny area, in South Wales, were en-route to Cairns in Queensland, Australia, for an extended trip. They had departed from Heathrow for Singapore around 10pm on Monday night.

Liam, 22, from Gilwern, said: "For the first nine hours after leaving Heathrow we had a really smooth flight. Then out of nowhere there was a slight bit of turbulence and the seatbelt sign came on. Second later the plane felt like it had hit something and people who hadn't had time to put their belts on were thrown into the air."

"I had my seatbelt on but Toby didn't have time and he went up in the air and banged his head on the ceiling. His seat went into pieces too. It was absolutely terrifying. I could hear someone in the row in front of us leaving a message for his loved ones saying that if anything happened to him he loved them. We thought about contacting our families in Wales but we didn't want to worry them."

Around 79 passengers and six crew members needed medical treatment in Bangkok. Images posted on social media showed damage to the ceiling of the cabin while food, cutlery, and other debris was strewn on the floor after the incident.

Liam said: "We count ourselves very lucky that we got away with only minor injuries. About 30 seconds after the plane plunged there was a call for a defibrillator and anyone who could help with CPR. Toby just went immediately – he was climbing over chairs trying to help people as he went."

Toby, who works at Llanarth Court Hospital, immediately put himself forward and helped along with other passengers with medical training. "We carried out CPR for around 30 minutes but a doctor on board called time of death at 9.19," said Toby. "I then had to go back and find a seat because we had to land. It was all very traumatic and I wish we could have done more. It has been a lot for both of us to take in."

A Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) spokesman said officials are supporting the family of the passenger and are in contact with local authorities. Lizzie Atkins, a friend of Mr Kitchen, said he and his wife had been planning to go on a cruise in Indonesia before travelling to Australia, describing the pair as "adventurous travellers".

She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I just can't believe that I'm having to do this. He was the most wonderful human being that you could ever know, really one of the top ones – he was stable and reliable and you always knew you were in safe hands with Geoff. He was just a remarkable man really."

"He had a really dry sense of humour and he had a twinkle in his eye. Every time you saw him you just knew he was going to make a funny joke."

She added that he was a "staunch supporter" of Thornbury Musical Theatre Group in Thornbury, north of Bristol, where the pair met around two decades ago. Mr Kitchen had been its secretary, treasurer, and chairman, she said, adding: "He would do anything for you, anything for the group – he was just amazing."

Singapore Airlines said the flight encountered "sudden extreme turbulence" at 37,000ft above Myanmar's Irrawaddy Basin about 10 hours after departure with the pilot declaring a medical emergency and diverting the plane to Bangkok. The carrier's chief executive, Goh Choon Phong, said he offered his "deepest condolences" to Mr Kitchen's family.

"We are deeply saddened by this incident," he said. "We are very sorry for the traumatic experience that everyone on board SQ321 went through. We are fully co-operating with the relevant authorities on the investigations."

Liam and Toby are in Singapore recovering before they carry on to Australia this weekend. "When we landed in Bangkok everyone was amazing," said Liam. "They helped us to make phone calls home to reassure our families we were okay. My family had already read about it on the news and was fearing the worst. It was great to be able to speak to them and let them know we were okay."

"The rescue teams flooded the plane and helped get the most badly injured off and we were given a private room at the airport. There was a real sense of community as we all helped each other. The team onboard did an amazing job as well in a very frightening time for everyone. After the sudden drop of the plane I thought it might be the end of the road but extremely grateful to still be here in a healthy condition. Both of us called our families after the incident to tell them how much we loved them."

Another passenger, Jerry, who was travelling to his son's wedding, told the BBC it was "the worst day of my life". Speaking with a bandage covering part of his head he said: "Things were going very smoothly at first. I'd just been to the loo, came back, sat down, bit of turbulence, and suddenly the plane plunged."

"I don't know how far but it was a long way. [It was] so sudden, there was no warning at all, and I ended up hitting my head on the ceiling. My wife did [too]."

"Some poor people walking around ended up doing somersaults. It was absolutely terrible. And then suddenly it stopped and it was calm again and the staff did their best to tend to the injured people. There were a lot of them and some of the staff are injured themselves so they did a sterling job."

The 16-year-old Boeing 777 left Heathrow at 10.17pm on Monday and was diverted to Bangkok, landing at 3.45pm local time (9.45am BST) on Tuesday. There were 211 passengers and 18 crew on board including 47 passengers from the UK and four Irish nationals.

Flightradar24 said its tracking data showed the plane encountering turbulence at approximately 8.49am BST while flying over Myanmar. The flight tracking service said data sent from the aircraft showed a "rapid change in vertical rate consistent with a sudden turbulence event", adding that there were "some severe" thunderstorms in the area at the time.

Aviation consultant John Strickland told the PA news agency that "turbulence happens" but, even with millions of flights each year, incidents are "limited" and "fatalities are rare". He said: "Exposure is greater in different parts of the world. The South Atlantic, Africa and the Bay of Bengal are all places that spring to mind where there's a greater incidence. There are discussions about whether climate change is influencing an increase in occurrences." Mr Strickland said airlines use a variety of methods to minimise the chances of a flight being affected by turbulence such as weather forecasts, radar, and reports from aircraft ahead.

A spokesman for the UK Civil Aviation Authority said: "Our deepest condolences go out to all those who have been affected. Accidents of this nature are extremely rare and aviation remains one of the safest forms of travel."

Why you should veer left at the airport - travel expert on how to skip queues

Why you should veer left - travel expert on how to skip queues

Airport travelers head to ticket counters and security (Photo by Howard Schnapp/Newsday RM via Getty Images)

As we approach peak holiday season, a travel expert has sharing his top hacks on how to avoid unnecessary delays this summer. From the secret psychology behind airport queues to harnessing the power of technology, Eurocamp ’s travel expert Lewis Martin offers his advice.

He said: “As we begin the run-up to summer holiday excitement, the recent issues with e-gates are an understandable concern amongst eager holidaymakers. While some delays just can’t be avoided, they needn’t dampen spirits too much, as savvy travellers can take steps to outsmart them with simple, and straightforward hacks.

“In the event of delays, passengers should always remember to keep in touch with their holiday providers and check with their travel insurance policies to keep any worries at bay.”

Lewis’s hacks for beating the delays this summer

Embrace your inner ‘airport Dad’

Whilst a travel wallet may not be the most stylish of travel accessories, it may be the simple secret to success.

Be more ‘airport Dad’ and ensure the whole family’s necessary documents (passports, visas, tickets) are easily accessible and in one place, like a handy travel wallet.

This will help to avoid delays at security checkpoints and most importantly, side-step the stress rummaging through your bags so you breeze through the beginning of your holiday.

Keep out of reach of the kids

Kids and travel documents are not a good mix. The smallest amount of damage to the biometric chip or personal information pages on your passport can spell e-gate disaster. So however tempting it might be, it’s always safer to avoid giving your little ones their passports to carry.

There's a reason they say ‘there’s an app for that’! Be tech-savvy and utilise apps and technology to your advantage.

Most airlines have their own apps which can give you up-to-date information on your travel. Airports also often have up-to-the-minute details on their websites which can keep you informed about any potential delays.

Download weather apps to keep an eye on the forecast, and find the app or website for local transport network providers if your trip to and from the airport relies on public transport.

Secret Psychology

In the event of lengthy queues in security or e-gate checks, you may be faced with multiple streams of passengers to choose from. However, you can gain a sneaky advantage by harnessing a simple psychological hack.

Studies show that, as the majority of the population are right-handed, most people will veer right when given the choice, meaning that queues on the left often tend to be that little bit quicker. So remember, if in doubt - and in the wise words of Beyonce - ‘to the left, to the left’!

Have a back-up plan

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail! Be prepared for any twists and turns in your journey and ensure you have back-up plans in place for every stage of your travel.

This includes having backup options for your transport to the airport whether it’s via public transport or taxi. Checking your usual route to the airport for roadworks the day before is a great way to avoid any surprises.

Early bird catches the worm

It may sound obvious, but ensuring that you arrive in plenty of time at the airport is crucial to combatting the impact of any delays you may encounter.

Whilst for shorter journeys, holidaymakers may allow slightly less time at the airport, we advise that no matter where you’re travelling to, passengers should arrive at least two hours ahead of their flight time.
