Lil Baby Unexpectedly Canceled a Headlining Festival Set — and Mayhem Ensued

  • By Jon Blistein

Attendees of Vancouver’s Breakout Festival wreaked havoc on the festival grounds after Lil Baby unexpectedly canceled his headlining set Sunday, Sept. 18.

According to the CBC , Lil Baby’s cancellation was announced at around 9:30 p.m. local time, about 30 minutes before the event was scheduled to end — and the crowd apparently didn’t take the news well. Videos of the ensuing chaos show attendees ripping down tents, tossing garbage cans, toppling refrigerators, breaking tables, and raiding a beverage tent.

Lil Baby called off his set at the last minute due to an illness, with the rapper elaborating in an apology on his Instagram Stories : “I would like to start off by saying I truly apologize Vancouver, Canada, the Breakout Festival, and to everyone who was in attendance! I have been going so hard these past few months without any breaks that it finally caught up with me. And my body completely shut down. I owe you guys big time and will for sure make up for it soon.”

“We do not condone violence or destruction of property and are utterly disappointed with the way some of our patrons acted at this year’s event,” Crescendo1’s statement read. “Safety of our guests and venue staff is our number one concern. We did everything to make Breakout a unique and enjoyable experience for Vancouver’s rap fans.”

In a statement shared with Rolling Stone , Laura Ballance, a rep for the Pacific National Exhibition amphitheater, said there was “significant damage” done to both the venue and parts of Hastings Park, where the festival was held. Ballance added, “[T]he PNE is incredibly sorry for the actions of those guests and impact this behaviour may have had on our community. We will be undertaking a full investigation and will be making further statements shortly.”

“Everybody was really (ticked),” said Chad Falk, who was there at the concert. “They were trying to storm the stage … then somebody said, ‘Let’s start a riot.’

“One guy started kicking the beer vending machine. Others were climbing up tents and ripping everything down. It was a full-on riot.”

Neighbours reported hearing dozens of police cars racing toward Hastings Park at around 10 p.m.

Vancouver police said “several hundred people” were involved in the fighting and property destruction in the amphitheatre and surrounding neighbourhood. Garbage bins and food vendor kiosks were overturned and destroyed. Several people also climbed various fixtures, including a lamp post, police said.

Images and videos showed some fans wreaking havoc at the venue.

Much of their ire appeared targeted at a beverage tent. In one video, one man scaled a lamp post egged on by the crowd, many of whom were videotaping the incident. In other videos, one man could be seen repeatedly kicking a fridge and another overturned a metal table. Another clip has a man overturning a recycling bin.

At one point, someone in the crowd could be heard yelling: “I want my $400 back.” Tickets to the two-day festival were $229 to $349, plus fees.

Watching the destruction unfold around him, Falk said he was shocked at some of his fellow attendees’ behaviour.

“What is with these people? One person doesn’t show up and you guys start a riot. What’s the point? Why would they want to hold this again here after this stunt?”

He said police showed up with canine units and began clearing people out about 25 minutes after the riot started.

No major injuries were reported, police said.

In a statement, the PNE said that staff did not know the headliner had cancelled until after the performer had left the site.

At 9:15 p.m. the announcement was made and around 4,200 of the 5,200 attendees left in an orderly manner. The remaining 1,000 however caused “significant damage” to the PNE amphitheatre and parts of Hastings Park. The damage was valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Spokeswoman Laura Ballance thanked police for their quick response, preventing the situation from escalating, and to residents in the Hastings Park area.

“To our neighbours — the PNE is incredibly sorry for the actions of those guests and impact this behaviour may have had on our community,” she said in a statement Monday.

The PNE is working the event organizer Timbre Events and its insurance agent to recover costs.

Police said seven people were taken to jail for breach-of-the-peace. Police have launched a criminal investigation into the incident.

“Though this investigation will take time, we will pursue criminal charges against people who participated in this violence and destruction,” said spokeswoman Const. Tania Visintin.

American rapper Dominique Armani Jones, who performs under the name Lil Baby, issued an apology on social media Monday for the abrupt cancellation of his show.

His body “completely shut down” after “going so hard” the last few months, he wrote in a post on Instagram stories. “I owe you guys big-time and will for sure make up for it soon.”

15 suspects in Vancouver's Breakout Festival riot charged with mischief

Police say all of the suspects are male and were between the ages of 15 and 22 during 2022 riot at pne.

Two police officers wearing tactical gear are shown from behind as they cross a Vancouver street.

Crown prosecutors have approved mischief charges against 15 young men and boys accused of participating in a riot at the Breakout Festival a year ago.

Representatives of the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) said roughly 1,000 people began rioting after the festival's headliner on Sept. 18, 2022, Lil Baby, announced he was too sick to perform at the PNE Amphitheatre half an hour before the scheduled end of the show.

On Thursday, Vancouver police announced that a yearlong investigation has led to mischief charges against 15 suspects, all men and boys who were between the ages of 15 and 22 at the time of the event.

"We spent months collecting evidence and analyzing video in the aftermath of the Breakout Festival, and we promised to do everything we could to arrest those responsible for their violent and destructive behaviour," lead investigator Insp. Dale Weidman said in a news release.

"We're grateful to everyone who came forward with tips and helped us identify these suspects."

  • Video 15 more suspect photos released as Vancouver police investigate Breakout Festival riot

All but three of the accused live outside of Vancouver, some coming from communities as far away as Prince George, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan, according to police.

The PNE has said the rioting crowd caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage at the venue and in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Since the riot, police have released more than two dozen images of suspects taken from from security footage and bystander videos in an attempt to identify those responsible for inciting the riot and destroying property.

At a news conference Tuesday, Weidman said investigators focused on "the people who were the most heinous in their behaviour."

He added that the charges wouldn't have been possible without help from the public.

"It was truly a community effort. … Without their assistance on this, we wouldn't have been able to identify everyone," Weidman said.

PNE riot after Lil Baby concert cancellation leads to arrests

By Raynaldo Suarez and Hana Mae Nassar and Charlie Carey

Posted September 19, 2022 6:53 am.

Last Updated September 20, 2022 7:30 am.

Several arrests have been made after disappointed concert-goers at the PNE in Vancouver turned to chaos Sunday night when rapper Lil Baby was forced to cancel his BreakOut Festival headline performance due to illness.

Images and videos online show attendees channeling their disappointment into destruction, with garbage bins being flipped over and structures being brought down. As tents were flipped over, some social media users said concert-goers even began stealing alcohol.

Witnesses tell CityNews the scene turned violent for some.

“It was a giant fight between a bunch of people probably in their late teens. There were more than 15 cop cars there, ambulance, fire trucks, a bunch of people bleeding all around, police with rifles,” one caller to CityNews described.

Police sirens could be heard wailing through East Vancouver late Sunday as the VPD responded to the scene. In some cases, people reported seeing over a dozen vehicles at a time.

The VPD has since confirmed that fights broke out both “inside and outside the venue,” adding concert-goers “became hostile” after word Lil Baby would not be taking the stage, with some people even climbing lamp posts and other structures.

“Vancouver police officers were already inside the venue and providing extra security when several hundred people began fighting and destroying property in the Amphitheatre on the PNE grounds, and in the surrounding neighbourhood,” explained Const. Tania Visintin.

“Dozens of extra officers were redeployed from other areas of the city to restore order, with some officers having bottles and other objects thrown at them.”

In all, police say seven people were taken into custody for “breach of peace.” Criminal investigations have also been launched, though are expected to take “months to complete.”

Organizers of the festival said earlier in the day that ‘Lil Baby’ had to cancel because he arrived and was “unfortunately too sick to perform.” Ticket holders were asked to get in touch for information about partial refunds.

pic.twitter.com/FGY3Wepsdf — BREAKOUT FESTIVAL (@BREAKOUTFEST_) September 19, 2022

In a statement to CityNews, organizers say “significant damage” was done to the PNE Amphitheatre, as well as parts of Hastings Park.

“Tonight, our first priority is for the safety and wellbeing of our staff as many were deeply affected by the reaction of guests and behaviour that ensued,” the statement continued.

Organizers say the VPD was quick to respond, adding officers “prevented the situation from becoming much worse.”

In a statement on Monday, PNE spokesperson Laura Ballance says PNE staff were not made aware of Lil Baby’s illness, nor the decision from him to not perform, until after he had already “vacated the site.”

PNE Lil Baby Concert Incident 'Riot'

Ballance says of the approximately 5,200 people in attendance, about 4,200 left the venue in an orderly fashion.

“Approximately 1000 of the guests turned their disappointment into a violent outburst that resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to PNE property inside the Amphitheatre and in Hastings Park,” she said. “It is our understanding that there was additional damage to property outside of Hastings Park, in the community, and to local businesses. For this, we are incredibly sorry to our neighbours.”

Ballance says the violence seen on Sunday night has “shaken our team.”

“Today, we are providing support to our staff team members who were on site for last night’s events and beginning the process of cleaning up and repairing our venue,” she explained.

Ballance says the organization will be working with the promoter of the festival, Timbre Events, and its insurance provider to ensure the timely repair of all damages related to the incident.

While fights and violence broke out, the VPD says there were no major injuries reported. The damage is estimated to be in the “thousands of dollars,” however Ballance noted it could be in the “hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

“We will conduct a full and thorough investigation into the actions of anyone who destroyed property, put concert-goers in danger, or committed other criminal acts,” the VPD’s Visintin added. “Though this investigation will take time, we will pursue criminal charges against people who participated in this violence and destruction.”

'Most wanted' suspects sought after riot at cancelled Lil Baby show in Vancouver

Weeks after festivalgoers rioted over the last-minute cancellation of a Lil Baby performance in East Vancouver, authorities are asking the public to help identify their 10 "most wanted" suspects.

The riot erupted at the Breakout Festival on the night of Sept. 18, when the headliner's show was cancelled shortly before he was scheduled to take the stage at the PNE Amphitheatre. There were about 5,200 attendees at the venue when the announcement was made.

"People were disappointed at this and so they acted out," Insp. Dale Weidman of the Vancouver Police Department said Tuesday. "What they ended up doing was causing over $300,000 worth of damage."

Authorities said rioters destroyed food kiosks, overturned tables and fought during a chaotic night that saw the mayhem spill out from the PNE into the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Organizers of the two-day Breakout Festival issued a statement on social media saying Lil Baby had been “too sick to perform,” and promising to provide attendees with partial refunds.

Days after the riot, police began asking the public to provide any photos or videos of the destruction – leading investigators to single out 10 individuals they are now hoping to track down.

"We're asking people to identify (the) suspects and hold them accountable," Weidman said. "We believe these people will be known – they'll be neighbours, they'll be classmates, friends, ex-friends."

Authorities said they're focusing their investigation on those suspects because they believe they are responsible for some of the most dangerous acts carried out that night, including some that might have put others at risk.

More details are available on the department's website , which notes one suspect allegedly "threw objects towards people, glass refrigerators, and a light fixture, causing it to shatter." Three others are accused of assault.

Some of the suspects appear to be "on the younger side," Weidman acknowledged, encouraging them to come forward to avoid additional pictures being released as the investigation continues.

"We realize that some of these images of people will be embarrassing for them, but I do think it's important to be accountable for your actions," he said.

"If people feel that they want to turn themselves in, they'll be treated respectfully."

Anyone with information on the suspects can provide tips using an online form . Weidman said people can provide details anonymously if they wish.

Fans riot at Vancouver’s Breakout Festival after headliner Lil Baby cancels

Organizers say they are “utterly disappointed” with the way this year’s festival ended..

lil baby tour vancouver

Crowds at Vancouver's Breakout Festival caused thousands of dollars worth of damage after it was announced that headliner Lil Baby would not be performing, Global and CTV reports.

Lil Baby was due to headline the Sunday night (September 18) of the two-day event at Vancouver's Pacific National Exhibition Amphitheatre but pulled out at the last minute, with organizers stating that the rapper was "too sick" to take to the stage. Partial refunds were offered to attendees. "We know you were looking forward to seeing him but these circumstances are beyond our control," the Breakout statement said.

Videos posted online show festival goers pulling down tents, garbage cans being overturned, as well as tables and fridges being thrown across the site. Another video shows the crowd booing as it is announced that Lil Baby would not be appearing as planned. Vancouver police confirmed to CTV that they made seven arrests and that, while there were no major injuries, there is "likely thousands of dollars in property damage."

"Vancouver police officers were already inside the venue and providing extra security when several hundred people began fighting and destroying property in the Amphitheatre on the PNE grounds, and in the surrounding neighbourhood," said Const. Tania Visintin said in a statement released on Monday. "Dozens of extra officers were redeployed from other areas of the city to restore order, with some officers having bottles and other objects thrown at them."

A statement from festival organizers, also shared on Monday, says "We do not condone violence or destruction of property and are utterly disappointed with the way some of our patrons acted at this year's event.

Lil Baby was not the only artist to pull out of Breakout. Lil Uzi Vert also failed to appear, with "unforeseen circumstances" blamed for his absence while Polo G and Sofaygo also canceled.

The FADER has reached out to a representative of the festival for comment.

According to TMZ , Lil Baby stated he didn’t make it to Vancouver because of exhaustion. However, TMZ also notes the rapper was partying at Zouk Nightclub, where Canelo Alvarez celebrated his boxing win over Gennady Golovkin less than 24 hours before he was supposed to hit the stage. Lil Baby could be seen parting and singing in the club. Hitting Instagram, Lil Baby offered an apology.

“I would like to start off by saying I truly apologize Vancouver Canada, the Breakout Festival and to everyone who was in attendance!” Baby wrote. “I have been going so hard these past few months without any breaks that it finally caught up with me and my body completely shut down.
