  • From Safari menu, select Develop > Show Page Source .
  • Or, right-click on page and Show Page Source from drop-down menu.
  • Keyboard shortcut: Option+Command+U .

This article shows how to view HTML source code in Safari.

View Source Code in Safari

Showing source code in Safari is easy:

Open Safari.

Navigate to the web page you would like to examine.

Select the Develop menu in the top menu bar. Select the Show Page Source option to open a text window with the HTML source of the page.

Alternatively, press Option+Command+U on your keyboard.

If the Develop menu is not visible, go into Preferences in the Advanced section and select Show Develop menu in menu bar .

On most web pages, you can also view the source by right-clicking on the page (not on an image) and choosing Show Page Source . You must enable the Develop menu in Preferences for the option to appear.

Safari also has a keyboard shortcut for viewing the HTML source: Hold down the command and option keys and hit U  ( Cmd + Opt + U .)

Advantages of Viewing Source Code

Viewing the source to see how a web designer achieved a layout will help you learn and improve your work. Over the years, many web designers and developers have learned quite a lot of HTML by merely viewing the source of web pages they see. It's an excellent way for beginners to learn HTML and for seasoned web professionals to see how others used new techniques.

Remember that source files can be very complicated. Along with the HTML markup for a page, there will probably be significant CSS and script files used to create that site's look and functionality, so don't get frustrated if you can't figure out what's going on immediately. Viewing the HTML source is just the first step. After that, you can use tools like Chris Pederick's Web Developer extension to look at the CSS and scripts as well as inspect specific elements of the HTML.

Is Viewing Source Code Legal?

While copying a site's code wholesale and passing it off as your own on a website is certainly not acceptable, using that code as a springboard to learn from is actually how many people make advancements in this industry. You would be hard-pressed to find a working web professional today who has not discovered something by viewing a site's source!

Web professionals learn from each other and often improve upon the work that they see and are inspired by, so don't hesitate to view a site's source code and use it as a learning tool.

You cannot edit webpage source code in Safari. When viewing the source code in Safari, copy and paste it into an app that can export files as plain text (like TextEdit or Pages).

The iOS version of Safari doesn't directly support webpage source viewing, but you can set up a custom bookmark that will accomplish the same task. Create a new bookmark in Safari and name it "Show Page Source" (or something similar, so long as you can identify it). Then in the address text box, copy and paste a specific javascript code , then Save . Once the bookmark is set up, navigate to a webpage that you want to vide the source of, then open your bookmarks and select the new Show Page Source bookmark to view the webpage's source code.

How to View the Source Code of a Webpage in Safari on Mac

Mahesh Makvana

Behind every beautiful webpage is a complex code called source code that serves the design and the functionality of that webpage to its users. Sometimes you may get curious and would like to see exactly what code builds a webpage. Viewing the source code of a webpage is possible in almost all web browsers, and the same applies to Safari for Mac.

Safari for Mac does allow you to view the source code of a webpage; however, it does not work like Chrome or Firefox. To view the source of a page in Safari you need to first unlock a hidden menu in the browser.

Here’s how to enable that menu and then see the source of a webpage using multiple ways.

View the Source Code of a Webpage in Safari on Mac

1. Launch Safari on your Mac.

2. When Safari launches, click on the “Safari” menu on the top followed by “Preferences…”

3. When the Preferences panel opens, click on the tab that says “Advanced”. It should be the last one in the menu on the top.

4. Inside the Advanced tab you should see an option that says “Show Develop menu in menu bar.”

Checkmark the box for the option, and the menu should instantly be added to the menu bar in the browser.

The Develop menu is now unlocked in Safari on your Mac. Here’s how you can use various options it gives you to access the source code of a webpage.

1. Using the Develop Menu

In the menu bar of Safari, you should now see a new option called “Develop” that has just been unlocked. To view the source of a page, click on the “Develop” menu and then choose “Show Page Source.”

Safari should instantly show you the full source code of the webpage.

2. Using a Keyboard Shortcut

If you plan to access the source code of a number of webpages, you may want to use a keyboard shortcut as it will be much faster than clicking an option in the menu bar and selecting another option.

safarisource-shortcut

While a webpage is open in Safari, press the “Option + Command + U” key combination, and Safari should let you see the source code of the webpage.

3. Using the Right-Click Menu

If Safari is your primary browser, and you happen to be someone who is interested in viewing the codes behind various webpages, the guide above should help you do that without requiring you to leave your favorite browser.

How to View Webpage Source CSS and HTML in Safari Mac?

Safari is the default browser in Mac used by mere 3.7% of the Internet users. Apple claims users can browse 2 hours more and view Netflix videos 4 hours more with Safari compared to Chrome or Firefox. There are also lots of new features introduced like pinning a tab and muting audio from the tab. But as a developer or web site owner you may need to look for the source code frequently and in this article we will explore how to view webpage source CSS and HTML in Safari.

Enabling Developer Menu

By default the developer options are disabled in Safari which means you will not see the “ Develop ” menu, “ Inspect Element ” when right clicking and the whole developer console options. Launch Safari and navigate to the menu “ Safari > Preferences… > Advanced Tab ” and enable the option “ Show Develop menu in menu bar ”. This will enable the “ Develop ” menu and all other features required to view webpage’s source.

Enable Develop Menu in Safari

Viewing Webpage Source

Once the “ Develop ” menu is enabled, open the webpage you want to view the source. Similar to other browsers just right click and chose “Show Page Source” or “ Inspect Element ” option. This will open the Web Inspector console at the bottom of the page.

Viewing Safari Web Inspector in Separate Window

Note: Web inspector can also opened using the shortcuts “ Option + Command + I ” when the “ Develop ” menu is enabled.

Using Web Inspector Console in Safari

The web inspector when docked at bottom of the page will look like below having multiple sections:

Safari Web Inspector

  • Dock the web inspector console to right side, bottom or open it in a separate window to use as per your convenience.
  • Click on the reload button to load the page and download button to download the web archive of the page to your local Mac. Using this download option you can get the local copy of any webpage for later analysis.
  • The tab panels have many panels like elements, network, resources, timeline, debugger, storage and console. Click on the required panel to view the related information.
  • Based on the selected tab the details can be viewed under this left panel. For example, the resources tab will show all resources like fonts, images, stylesheets and scripts used on the page.
  • This right panel shows the corresponding detailed information for the section on the left panel. For example, selecting the “ Resources ” tab and then “ Stylesheets ” will list down all the external stylesheets used on the page. Click on any stylesheet to view the source in the right side panel.

Inspecting Elements

Right clicking on any of the element on the page will show “ Inspect Element ” option and clicking on it will open the web inspector. Under “ Elements ” tab move the mouse and the corresponding element on the page will get highlighted. Once the element is selected the corresponding CSS of the element can be viewed under “Styles” tab on the right side panel.

Viewing Element CSS in Safari

The “ Styles ” tab has three dropdown values – “ Styles-Computed, Styles-Rules and Styles-Visual” . The “ Styles-Rules ” option helps to show individual CSS class as can be seen in Chrome and Firefox . You can enable, disable, modify individual CSS properties of the element directly and see the impact the web page.

Viewing on Responsive Modes

Safari makes it easy to view the webpages on different types of display generally used to test the responsiveness of the webpage. Click on the “ Enter Responsive Design Mode ” option available under “ Develop ” tab or use keyboard shortcuts “ Option + Command + R ”. You can view the display on different devices like iPhone, iPad and other Macs.

Safari Responsive Mode

Safari also offer to choose the user agent to render the page on all latest browsers like Chrome, IE11, Edge and Firefox on iOS, Mac and Windows platforms. Responsive mode can be exited either with keyboard shortcuts “ Option + Command + R ” or from the menu “ Develop > Exit Responsive Design Mode ”.

How to view the HTML source code of a web page on Mac, iPad, and iPhone

Do you want to see what’s under the hood of web pages you visit? Check out how to view a page’s source code on Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

View source code of a web page in Safari

Whether you dabble in small-time web development or you just have the general interest of digging around in code to see how things work, there may be times when you want to see the HTML source code behind a specific web page.

It’s possible to do this from Safari (or other browsers) on your Mac, and for iPhone or iPad, you will have to use dedicated third-party apps.

View the source code of a website

Here are the steps for macOS and iOS.

The first step to being able to see the HTML code of a site is to enable Develop mode , a mode that Apple hides by default as the company assumes only developers would want to tinker with these options.

Enable Develop mode in Safari:

1) Open Safari and click Safari > Settings or Preferences from the top menu bar.

2) Go to the Advanced tab.

3) At the bottom, check the box that says Show features for web developers or Show Develop menu in menu bar .

Enable 'Show features for web developers' in Safari Advanced settings

In the menu bar, you will now see a new tab called Develop .

Develop option in Safari menu bar on Mac

Show page source code:

Now that you have enabled this developer mode, you can access the source code of a web page in three different ways:

  • With the web page open, go to Develop in the menu bar and select Show Page Source .
  • On the web page for which you want to see the source code, press the Option + Command + U keys simultaneously.
  • This is probably the easiest option. Simply Control-click or right-click on an empty area of the page and select Show Page Source .

Show Page Source using right-click in Safari on Mac

When performing any of these actions, the source code of the page will then appear at the bottom of your Safari window. From there, you can inspect all you want.

On iPhone or iPad

If you want to view a web page’s source code from your iPhone or iPad, you will want to use an app to assist you. Most modern apps make this process easy and include useful syntax highlighting so you can better understand what you’re looking at.

We recommend using HTML Viewer Q , which is a free download from the App Store. Once installed, follow these steps to view a web page’s source code:

1) Launch HTML Viewer Q and tap the Link button at the top right of the app.

2) Enter the full URL of a web page you want to see the source code of, then tap the Go button. We will use Amazon for this example.

View HTML source on iPhone or iPad

3) Once the page loads, tap on the Code button at the top left of the app.

View source code of web page on iPhone

You are now viewing the source code of the web page you selected. You can tap any of the numbers at the top of the app to change between different font sizes, i.e., 9pt, 12pt, 16pt, etc., and you can also use the Search button to search for any keywords or syntax you might be specifically looking for.

The app also lets you copy the HTML code so you can paste it into any other app.

This feature empowers the Curious Georges out there with the ability to see what makes a web page tick, but this is also an invaluable tool for web developers, novice or experienced, who want a better understanding of the code behind a web page or simply want to troubleshoot their own site.

How to turn on the develop menu in safari on mac.

The Develop menu lets you view page source in Safari on Mac.

Quick Links

How to enable the develop menu in safari on mac, how to view page source in safari on mac.

When you right-click on any web page in Safari on Mac, it doesn't reveal the Show Page Source and Inspect Element buttons. To see these, you need to enable the Develop menu---we'll show you how to do that.

Once you've enabled the Develop menu, right-clicking a blank space on any website will reveal the Inspect Element and Show Page Source buttons. These allow you to take a look at the source code of any website, which is useful for things like downloading images from websites and debugging code or finding out what it looks like behind any site (for website designers).

You can easily turn on the Develop menu in Safari by following a couple of steps. Open Safari on your Mac and click the "Safari" button in the menu bar.

Next, select "Preferences." Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Command+, (comma). This will also open up Safari preferences.

Go to the "Advanced" tab.

Check the box for "Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar."

Now the Develop menu will appear between Bookmarks and Window at the top.

Apart from being able to view the page source, this will allow you to access developer-focused features, such as disabling JavaScript on any website.

Once you've enabled the Develop menu, there are a couple of ways to view the page source in Safari.

Open any website in Safari and right-click the blank space on the page. Now, select "Show Page Source." You can also get to this menu by using the keyboard shortcut Option+Command+u.

If you're looking for images or other media elements from any web page, Safari makes it easy to find these. In the left-hand pane, you will see various folders such as Images, Fonts, etc. Click the "Images" folder to quickly find the photos that you need.

After selecting an image, you can view its details easily by opening up the details sidebar. The button to open this is located at the top-right of the console, just below the gear icon. You can also open this with the shortcut Option+Command+0.

Click "Resource" at the top of the details sidebar to view details, such as the size of the image and its full URL.

You can change the position of the page source console easily, too. There are two buttons at the top-left of this console, right next to the X button. Click the rectangle icon to move the console to a different side within the browser window.

If you'd like to open the page source console in a separate window, you can click the two-rectangles icon. This will detach the console and open it in a separate window.

To check out the code for any specific element on the page, you can right-click that element and select "Inspect Element." This will take you directly to the code for the element that you selected.

Whenever you're done looking at the code, click the X button to close the page source console and return to browsing on Safari. You can also check out how to view a website's page source in Google Chrome  here.

How to view the html page source of a website in Safari

safari

This is a bit of an advanced tip for web developers. Safari used to have a menu item called ‘View Page Source’. If you selected this you could see the HTML code of the website you were viewing.  This option has been removed from recent versions of Safari but you can re-enable it by turning on Safari’s Develop menu.

You can enable the extra menu in Safari by selecting ‘Preferences’ under Safari in the OS X menu bar  and then under the ‘Advanced’ pane select the checkbox that says ‘Show Develop menu in menu bar.’

Now you will see the following extra menu in Safari:

safari debug

This contains useful tools for developers.

‘Show Page Source’ will show you the HTML page source code.

You can also Empty Caches from here, and even trick a webpage into thinking you are using a different browser to see if it renders differently.

If you change your mind just type the same command into terminal but with a ‘0’ at the ned instead of the ‘1’.

How can I force Safari to perform a full page reload, without using the mouse?

I'm using Safari to preview web pages as I develop them on my local server. I've got 'Disable Caches' checked in the Develop menu. And yet Safari is still working from a cached version of a stylesheet that's linked from the HTML file being displayed.

I can sometimes override this by Option-clicking the reload button in the location bar, but I want to refresh the page automatically when I save the CSS file. At the moment I'm doing it using an AppleScript that's bound to the Save action in my text editor. I could see using Keyboard Maestro instead. But I need some consistent way to force Safari to do a full reload from the keyboard.

  • browser-cache

  • Do you have any extensions installed. Had this problem once with Adblock... It messed up one page in particular, thought it was a stylesheet problem too, tried everything... but it was Adblock messing with it. –  unom Jan 8, 2014 at 22:08

Enable the Develop menu from Safari menu - Preferences - Advanced .

On Safari version 11.1 and above :

CMD + OPTION + R reloads the page ignoring cache.

On Safari version 9 and above :

CMD + SHIFT + R reloads the page ignoring cache.

Emptying caches seems not to reload the stylesheets everytimes…

On Safari below version 9 :

Empty cache and then reload so full "hot key" would be :

CMD + OPTION + E

CMD + R to refresh the page

Of course probably turning opening and closing a New Private Window from the File would also work but…

There is an option in the menubar Develop->Disable Caches. This is true for Safari 5.1. I'm not sure for the rest.

Turn on Private mode and refresh the page. It won't get it from the cache in private mode.

Hard refresh was removed as a keyboard shortcut in Safari 5. The old command for that was ⌘ + SHIFT + R

CTRL + F5 May work but I can't test here.

  • Yes, that's how to refresh the page, but it doesn't bypass the cache. –  Gabe Sep 9, 2010 at 16:02
  • 2 Control-F5 just selects the location bar, like Command-L. –  Gabe Sep 9, 2010 at 16:45
  • Then it's been disabled completely. I found a number of threads complaining about it. There is an extension that I have NOT tested here: twitter.com/siracusa/status/15683201068 that may do what you want. –  JNK Sep 9, 2010 at 16:47
  • No, that extension just creates a button in the toolbar (which I guess some people prefer to the icon in the location bar). I also found a lot of threads complaining about it—i was wondering if someone on here had any special knowledge. –  Gabe Sep 9, 2010 at 19:37
  • Sorry! :( <15chars> –  JNK Sep 9, 2010 at 19:47

Workaround: in the develop menu, select "start debugging javascript" and it must reload the code properly. You can then stop debugging... I know it's not a clean solution and I'm not sure if it works always or in all versions, but it's working for me now.

I stumble upon this question and apparently the current answers do not work.

Issue is currently CMD + ALT + R opens the Responsive design.

However if the inspector is open via CMD + ALT + I , then the same shortcut does a clean refresh.

Breaking news, tourists slammed for posing naked in popular desert spot: ‘very sickening’.

They de-nude-ed the landscape.

Another day, another instance of tourists disrespecting a landmark.

This time, foreign sightseers angered Namibian authorities after posing naked atop the legendary Big Daddy Dune in the Namib Desert, as seen in photos circulating on social media .

“It is very sickening and it really [creates] a bad image for Namibia,” Kenneth Nependa, vice-chairperson of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations, told the Namibian Sun, the BBC reported.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Namibian (@thenamibian)

He added that these antics risked attracting tourists who think that “anything goes” in the southern African nation.

Accompanying footage and video, snapped by an unknown source, shows the unnamed trio strutting about in their birthday suits atop the over 1,000-foot-tall sand mound, which is reportedly popular with families.

Visitors didn’t appreciate the tourists treating the scenic site like a nude beach and called on tourism officials to take action against the crass culprits.

Authorities haven’t yet publicly identified the sandy stripteasers, who allegedly left Namibia by the time authorities received the reports.

Tourists on a dune.

However, the nudists could be banned from entering the country’s parks, according to tourism ministers, who added that the “extremely shocking” act was public indecency and therefore punishable by local law.

In light of the indecent incident, officials are calling on visitors to report violators to authorities so they can deal with them accordingly.

“We appeal to that section of tourists to summon the conscience so that they do the right things,” declared Romeo Muyunda, a spokesperson for the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism.

However, many social media users disagreed that the incident was problematic.

“Why are they in trouble? They bothered no one,” an X user declared, according to the BBC, while another claimed that there is “nothing wrong with sunbathing.”

Big Daddy is one of the three largest dunes in Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park and is a popular destination among sightseers looking to get a picturesque view from its crest.

War of words escalates over Safari at the Quarry Jeep even planned for Delmar

Citing a number of violations, letters from the Wicomico County Council and Salisbury City Council have added more bumps in the road for the beleaguered Safari at the Quarry offroad Jeep event set for May.

On Tuesday, the County Council sent a formal letter to the Office of the County Executive noting the Memorandum of Understanding for the event slated for the weekend of May 4 in Delmar was a repeated concern for the public.

They also said "the council is now aware that the event organizer is in breach of the MOU in numerous ways, and accordingly, the majority of the council request that you immediately notify Live Wire Media, Inc.that the event is terminated as permitted under the Termination Provision contained in the MOU."

According to the letter, infractions include, but are not limited to:

failing to obtain all licenses, permits and governmental approvals needed;

placing the event course outside the property identified in the memorandum;

and failing to properly inform neighboring property owners of the scheduled event.

The County Council further contended, pursuant to the terms of the memorandum, the event organizer and the county agreed that the event would be held on 111.58 acres of the Connelly Mill Road property. Parcels 169 and 167 of the park total exactly 111.58 acres. That was followed by the event organizer posting a map of the event course which showed "a substantial portion of the event" scheduled to take place on more than the allotted acreage.

Allegations by the council added the event organizer failed to fully make the true scope of the event known to homeowner groups like the Shadow Hills Homeowners Assocation.

"This breach compounds the problem created by (the Office of the County Executive) when you did not inform the council about the (memorandum) and intentionally made the term of the (memorandum) 364 days to avoid the legal requirement for council approval of any agreement with a term of more than one year," the letter stated.

Wicomico County Attorney Paul Wilber responded to the County Council letter on behalf of County Executive Julie Giordano, claiming their grounds for canceling the MOU were unfounded. Giordano doubled down on her support for the event and its organizer, making it clear she had no intention of terminating the memorandum.

More on the event and meetings Sparks fly at Wicomico council meeting over Delmar Jeep event

"While we appreciate the council's concern, it is not their purview to determine whether contractors adhere to contracts or MOUs," Giordano said. "That is something that rests solely in the executive branch. We have analyzed their letter, and after speaking with our attorney, there is absolutely no validity in their claims that the (event organizer) had violated the MOU. We will not be canceling the contract because we don't have any grounds to do so."

Giordano added the county does not want to be in the business of "breaking contracts, especially when no violations have occurred."

A question of zoning for coming Delmar Jeep event?

In a rare move, the city of Salisbury also entered the fray by sending its own letter to the county executive, claiming, while the county owns the land on which the event is to take place, the city is tasked with zoning it according to how it sees fit. Currently, the Connelly Mill Road property is not zoned for such a use as a large-scale offroad event.

"This property, although owned by Wicomico County, is located within Salisbury city limits and is zoned R-8A Residential. Neither your company or Wicomico County consulted with the city prior to entering the (memorandum) nor did the county otherwise seek the city's permission or approval for the anticipated event," said the letter sent last Friday to Giordano by the legal counsel for the city of Salisbury.

The letter also argues any likely legal challenge to the city's zoning code will be impacted by the public outcry over the event being proposed and the way in which the memorandum was created.

"The use of the property by Live Wire, as detailed in the memorandum, is clearly private in nature and does not fall within any exemption of the city's zoning code. On behalf of (the city), it is respectfully requested that Live Wire take immediate action to discontinue this event and all future events at the Connelly Mill Road property," the city's letter stated as it urged the matter be dealt with without resorting to legal challenges.

The city added it wanted Live Wire to assure residents by Wednesday, April 24, the event was no longer taking place.

More on pushing the event forward Big Delmar Jeep event moves forward, but leaves many questions in its wake

The county 'never sought the city's permission'

On Wednesday, Wilber responded to the pair of letters from the County Council and the city of Salisbury, stating in a letter "the county never sought the city's permission to develop or utilize property like the Parker Athletic Complex property (another site that was not zoned for such a use, but was owned by the county), because the county is exempt from city oversight and city zoning regulations."

According to Title 17 of the county code, Wilber noted, "land, buildings or other structures" owned by or leased solely to the federal government, the state of Maryland, Wicomico County or the city of Salisbury can be used without approval from the city.

"Until last week, the city has never interfered with the county's determination that a county owned property in the city is being operated for public use. Like the many sports tournaments at the Parker Athletic Complex, the Safari at the Quarry is also a public purpose event, which will have a positive community impact," the letter said.

The office of the County Executive also provided copies of communication between Live Wire and residents of the of the local neighborhoods and between Giordano's office and the former president of the Shadow Hills Homeowners Assocation on Oct. 2, 2023.

"We moved into the neighborhood two years ago and were told about the plans for the park and it was a major draw," Mikele Dahlen, the current president of the HOA and local resident near the quarry property. "It was through Facebook ads that we learned about the event, and we were very confused. Our previous president, Casey Taylor, had a very unsatisfactory meeting with the county executive and voiced her concerns."

Upon taking the post as the new president, Dahlen and other residents believed the event would last only two days, and plans to make it a park would continue.

"Then we saw it was going to be a 'premier offroad facility for the Eastern Shore' and many other things that wasn't the case. (Live Wire) hasn't spoken to the environmental stewards of Wicomico County, and I reached out to the event organizer and had a good conversation, but then his website said things that were very different," Dahlen said.

Giordano still contends the homeowners’ association was notified of the event on approximately Sept. 28, 2023, in a meeting with the County Executive. The homeowners’ association was notified of the event by the event organizer on approximately Nov. 17, 2023, by telephone conversation with the then-HOA president. Finally, the County Council, in the presence of subdivision residents, was briefed by the event organizer at a public council meeting on Dec. 5, 2023. The event organizer has been available to answer questions by subdivision residents since October 2023.

Your Guide to Private Browsing in Safari

Private browsing is often misunderstood, but it can be a helpful feature if you know what’s what.

Quick Links

What private browsing does in safari, how to use safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to use safari private browsing on a mac, how to disable safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to disable safari private browsing on a mac, key takeaways.

  • Private Browsing in Safari hides browsing history, autofill details, downloads, and locks tabs after inactivity.
  • Safari on Mac groups private and non-private tabs, while on iPhone it shows all tabs regardless of mode.
  • To use Private Browsing in Safari, identify it by a dark address bar, "Private" indicator, or "Private" next to the site URL.

Most browsers offer a private browsing mode that aims to keep the websites you view off the record. But what exactly does it do in Safari and how do you get the best out of it?

First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.

In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:

  • Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.
  • Stops remembering details you enter in forms for autofill.
  • Keeps downloaded items from appearing in your Downloads list.
  • Locks private tabs after a period of inactivity.
  • Adds tracking and fingerprinting protection.

However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.

On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.

You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:

  • The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
  • On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
  • On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.

The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.

  • Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
  • Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
  • If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.

You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:

  • Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
  • Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
  • Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.

You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on Screen Time .
  • Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
  • If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
  • Tap Content Restrictions .
  • Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

The option to enter private mode will now be gone.

On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:

  • Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
  • Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
  • Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
  • Click Content Restrictions .
  • Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.

Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

I've visited 93 countries, 57 of them with kids. These 5 underrated spots are great places to enjoy with your family.

  • Karen Edwards has traveled to 93 countries, and 57 of them have been with her young children.
  • Edwards said that her family has had more fun exploring underrated spots than the popular ones.
  • Her favorites include Tanzania for its safari tours and Abu Dhabi for its vibrant festival scene.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karen Edwards , who blogs about her family's travels around the world. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Since 2000, I've visited 93 countries and 57 of them have been with my four children who are all under the age of 10.

I am a nurse by background, but I have been blogging about traveling with my husband and kids since 2014. I cover a lot of off-the-beaten-track destinations and write itineraries for places I've been to, explaining how they work for families with children.

Many popular family destinations tend to be overcrowded. They're usually the ones that get a lot of media exposure or are shown in viral videos on social media. In America, it'd be places like Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida, while for Europeans, it might be some of the Spanish resort areas.

Although my family and I have visited these places, we have always come away disappointed. They often lack educational experiences, feeling like pointless affairs.

I think traveling to underrated spots makes trips feel more exclusive and you can learn more about the cultures of the countries you visit — it also keeps you away from tourist traps.

We went on a safari tour in Tanzania

Our family visited Tanzania in 2019 in collaboration with a tourism brand. We were there for 12 days.

Our flights to the country were kind of expensive; we paid about $9,000 for our then-family of four, including a stop in Zanzibar at the end of the trip for a few days. However, overall, the entire trip didn't end up costing us that much.

We had some really unique experiences in Tanzania. We went to Mto Wa Mbu village , which is beneath a banana plantation, and we went on a safari tour in its Lake Manyara National Park .

Interestingly, Tanzania is one of the few places in the world where lions are known to climb trees. I remember seeing them sit in tall trees; it was quite unusual, but my kids really enjoyed how close they were to the animals.

Throughout our trip, we actually felt like we were experiencing life in Tanzania. Our campsite was on a river's edge in the depths of nature. It was nice not to feel surrounded by tourists.

My kids fell in love with Abu Dhabi's culture

Many people mistakenly believe that Dubai is a country, but in reality, it's a city in the United Arab Emirates, with Abu Dhabi being its capital.

My family and I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2021 and lived there for 18 months. The city does have a lot of similarities to glitzy and glam Dubai , but you get a more down-to-earth experience.

There are amazing festivals in Abu Dhabi where they display their culture in different formats, whether that be through local food or crafts. It does feel authentic because it's usually mainly locals participating and organizing them.

The city is also 1.5 hours away from Al Ain, which sits at the foot of  Jebel Hafeet , one of the tallest mountains in the region. Along the way up, you'll find many ancient artifacts, such as beehive huts, which have been there for thousands of years. At the top, you can watch incredible sunsets.

Related stories

The city also has the Al Ain Oasis , which uses an ancient irrigation system. It has these beautiful paved pathways that look like cobbled streets.

My kids loved Abu Dhabi and are constantly asking me to go back — they really liked all the cultural celebrations.

We love Sri Lanka so much, we're building a villa there

In 2022, my family and I moved to Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi. We thought we'd have more family time here, and it was going to be an affordable place to live.

We're building a family-friendly villa here that should be completed by August. The area where we are building has a lot of nice cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Overall, Sri Lanka is an amazing country that has so many diverse experiences. There are tea plantations, mountains, and beaches. As for wildlife, their national parks have loads of elephants and leopards.

On one occasion, we went on a safari boat tour to an isolated national park where we watched elephants swim across a lake and onto a tiny island. It was amazing.

The beaches in Sri Lanka are pristine. They have beautiful scenery with swaying coconut palm trees, clear water, and perfect waves. Our favorite is Kabalana Beach .

Because we're always on the beach, my children have learned how to surf. I think it's the most fun thing that we do on the weekends as a family.

The ski resorts and spas are amazing in Andorra

We visited Andorra in 2018 for about six days. It's a tiny country nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain. It's a two-hour drive from Barcelona and three hours from Toulouse, France.

The city has a unique fusion of cultures, though I think Catalonian is the strongest influence. During our trip, my family and I toured many ancient churches.

We also went to some amazing spas and resorts in Andorra. The hotel and ski system there is really family-friendly.

During our visit to the Grandvalira ski resort , my daughter learned how to ski and my husband got to snowboard — the resort has a kindergarten at the foot of its mountain, where kids can play or ski.

Andorra also has amazing spa facilities that are suitable for families and are sectioned off for different age groups.

Our trip was in collaboration with Andorra's tourism board, but I feel like it wasn't overly expensive in comparison to some other places around the world.

I was treated like family in Macedonia

Macedonia is a Balkan country just north of Greece. I haven't been there with children, but I wouldn't have any issues taking my kids there.

It has many beautiful small villages and it's great for skiing too.

The country is also home to one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe named Lake Orchid, which borders Albania. There's this beautiful, small village on the lake that has charming restaurant and a lovely atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying good food.

I visited the country in 2008, and then again in 2012 with my then-boyfriend and now-husband.

The first time I visited, I went with two girlfriends, and we were backpackers. We arrived in the middle of the night by bus and had no idea what we were doing. The bus driver just made a call, and a stranger came and picked us up in his car — I thought I was going to die.

The opposite happened. He took us back to his home with his family, and we stayed there with them for a few days. We ended up extending the trip because he and his family were so amazing.

They didn't speak a word of English, and we couldn't speak a word of their language either. We'd just gesture at each other, and they'd give us food and red wine.

I just totally fell in love with them and their country.

Days of torrential rains have pummeled parts of Kenya, leaving at least 32 dead, 15 injured and more than 40,000 people displaced, according to officials. The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.

The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the “long rains,” but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department .

Heavy rains have also pounded other nations across East Africa. In Tanzania, at least 155 people were killed and 236 others injured from the relentless rain that has swept several parts of the country in recent days, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday.

The rains affected some 200,000 people, Mr. Majaliwa added, and caused damage to farms, bridges, roads, schools and places of worship. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned that heavy rains and strong winds would continue to pummel several towns and cities, including the port city of Dar es Salaam.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where some of the country’s heaviest rain has fallen, more than 30,000 people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the Kenya Red Cross Society said.

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on social media that the local government there was “clearly overwhelmed,” and he called on the federal government for help.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,” he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.

Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, said in a social media post on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.

The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also partially closed four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in the forecast for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday. The agency also warned of a high likelihood of breakouts of diseases such as malaria and diarrhea in some areas.

The latest downpours come just months after torrential rains and floods killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more nationwide.

Here are photographs of the flooding in Kenya:
