7 of the Best Northern Lights Cruises

Set sail on these itineraries to try to spot the aurora borealis.

hurtigruten northern lights cruise 2022

If seeing the northern lights , also known as the aurora borealis, is on your travel list, you've probably already looked into the best places to see them : northern destinations like Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland , and Scandinavia among them. But have you ever considered visiting those destinations by sea rather than land? Many cruise lines not only offer itineraries to those regions but also offer northern lights-specific sailings, too. Cruising is particularly appealing for northern lights seekers because the ships can access remote areas without light pollution, allowing guests to see the aurora in its full brilliance. So if you haven't yet seen the northern lights — or if you're looking to see them again — here are seven northern lights cruises to help you accomplish your goal.

Viking: In Search of the Northern Lights

RelaxFoto.de/Getty Images

Over the course of 13 days, a luxurious Viking ocean ship transports guests from London to Amsterdam , then all the way up the coast of Norway and north of the Arctic Circle, before returning back south to the Norwegian city of Bergen. (Although some sailings operate in reverse.) The Norwegian fjords themselves are a sight to behold — and if they're paired with the northern lights, that's all the better! The sailings run from January to March when daylight is limited in the Arctic Circle, making for prime aurora opportunities. Rates start from $4,999 per person in 2023, and it should be noted that Viking is an adults-only cruise line.

Aurora Expeditions: Northern Lights Explorer

Considering the cruise line is named after the atmospheric phenomenon, it should come as no surprise that it offers a northern lights itinerary. At 19 to 22 days long, depending on the departure, there is plenty of time to hope for a northern lights appearance — or two, or three, or more. The sailings start in the northern Norwegian city of Kirkenes before sailing south along the coast, heading back north to the remote archipelago of Jan Mayen (a polar bear hotspot), over to the scenic fjords of East Greenland, and around the northern half of Iceland. The longer itinerary continues with a visit to the Faroe Islands and disembarkation in Bergen, Norway. Aurora offers just one of these sailings per year in September. Rates start from $19,705.50 per person in 2023.

Hurtigruten: The Classic Roundtrip Voyage

Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. But the routes of this coastal ferry company in Norway just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora. In fact, Hurtigruten is so confident you'll see the northern lights during the auroral season (Sept. 26 through March 31) that if they don't show up on a sailing of 11 days or more, the company will give you a free six- or seven-day cruise to try again. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip itinerary from Bergen up the coast of Norway and back. Rates start from $2,309 per person in 2023.

Quark Expeditions: Under the Northern Lights

Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers aurora sailings each fall. These 14-day itineraries cruise from Iceland to Greenland and back from September into early October. As the majority of the voyage takes place above the Arctic Circle, the odds of seeing the northern lights are high, especially as solar activity tends to peak around the autumnal and vernal equinoxes in September and March, respectively. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. Rates start from $8,501 per person in 2023.

Oceanwide Expeditions: East Greenland Scoresby Sund - Aurora Borealis

If you don't have two or three weeks to take off work to go northern lights watching, consider Oceanwide Expeditions' eight-day aurora borealis sailings from Iceland to Greenland and back. The adventure begins in Akureyri, the unofficial capital of north Iceland, before heading for Greenland's breathtaking Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world. If you do have a little more time, you can opt for the 13-day Spitsbergen - Northeast Greenland - Aurora Borealis itinerary, which embarks in the Svalbard archipelago before sailing to Greenland and down to Iceland. Both take place in the late summer into early fall, as darkness returns to the skies in the Arctic. Rates for the eight-day itinerary start from $4,600 per person for the 2023 sailings.

Cunard: Norway and Northern Lights

Each fall, one or two of the ships in Cunard's legendary fleet head north for Norway, where guests are treated to scenic cruising along the coast. The 12-day itineraries depart from Southampton, England, before traveling to Alesund, Tromsø, Narvik, and Haugesund, sailing through majestic fjords along the way. Since the ships sail this itinerary from October to November, the skies will be dark enough to see the northern lights, should they decide to appear. In 2023, the voyage will be undertaken by Queen Victoria , while next season, the Queen Mary 2 and the upcoming Queen Anne will take the reins. Rates start from $1,689 per person in 2023.

P&O: Norway

The most affordable option on this list, British cruise line P&O operates 12-day sailings to Norway year-round, but during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard. Guests embark in Southampton, England, before sailing north to Norway, traveling as far north as Tromsø, well north of the Arctic Circle. We recommend splurging on a room with windows for the best northern lights viewing options. However, those in interior cabins can always run up on deck — which you should do anyway to witness the full grandeur of the atmospheric phenomenon. Rates start from $1,385 per person in 2023.

Want to experience more fjords on your northern lights cruise in Norway? We recommend taking a Norway in a Nutshell® train journey from Oslo to the colourful city of Bergen , the southernmost port. This journey includes a ride on a famous Flåm Railway , with breathtaking mountain and fjord views on the way to the west coast.

When to see the northern lights in Norway

The winter season in Norway is the best time to view the northern lights . Because nighttime darkness is required for seeing this dazzling natural light show, you should visit Norway between October and March for optimal chances of aurora borealis sightings. Coincidentally, travelling outside of the busy summer season may also result in better cruise deals!

Where to see the northern lights in Norway

The further north you go in the northern hemisphere, the better for seeing the northern lights. Because the aurora borealis are magnetically drawn towards the north pole, the areas north of the Arctic Circle are best for northern lights viewing.

Some of the ports of call in Norway’s arctic region include the Lofoten Islands , Tromsø and North Cape (Nordkapp) - all places that are located within the so-called “northern lights belt”, an area known to have more auroral frequency and intensity.

If you wish to experience snow activities, such as dog sledding, it’s best to plan your winter northern lights break in Norway between December to April. Nordic Visitor can assist in your trip planning and tailor a tour package to your interests.

Thanks a lot for all your efforts. We are glad that we have chosen Nordic Visitor for this trip and surely will recommend to our friends and family.

Wonderful experience

Our experience in Norway was wonderful. Our hotels were centrally located, clean and offered great breakfasts to start each day. Our transportation connections couldn't have gone any smoother and the scenery from the train into Flåm and boat through the fiords was spectacular! All three of us felt this was an amazing experience.

I couldn't have planned a better trip to Norway on my own. We loved the structure and assurance of the itinerary while having the flexibility to explore on our own. Travelling in January, Nordic Visitor's emergency number gave us peace of mind in case of bad weather. The hotels were excellent and the locations were very convenient to public transportation and places we wanted to visit. The excursions were fantastic. Want a stress-free adventure? Let Nordic Visitor lead the way.

We had an amazing time in Norway!

We had an amazing time in Norway! The people could not have been friendlier, the vistas were breathtaking, and our Nordic Visitor helper, Irja, went above and beyond to help us plan our stay and even changed some reservations for us at the last minute when I realised that I had made a mistake. We would absolutely come back to Norway with Nordic Visitor again.

The trip was perfect

I took my mum to Norway for her 60th birthday in the hopes of seeing the northern lights. The trip planned for us by Nordic Visitor was perfect. We were glad of the days we got to spend exploring Tromsø and the excursions that were included allowed us to make some truly amazing memories. The snowmobile tour was the highlight of the trip, truly thrilling and topped off by seeing the lights as we arrived back to the camp. All the people who led our excursions were friendly and really knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend the Nordic Visitor service as a way to pack a lot of unforgettable experiences into a short time.

The perfect honeymoon

We couldn't have asked for a better honeymoon! We knew we wanted to visit Norway for our honeymoon but were overwhelmed with planning the trip on our own. Finding Nordic Visitor and working with Jemima was a godsend! Jemima helped plan us the perfect honeymoon with ease. Our trip was the perfect amount of planned activities and downtime/time to explore at our leisure. Travelling around Norway was a breeze with the help of Nordic Visitor and we cannot recommend the tours Nordic Visitor has to offer enough. We hope to use Nordic Visitor again on our next European excursion! Each hotel we stayed in was comfortable and spacious. All hotels had great breakfast buffets and were all centrally located in the areas we were visiting. We added a food and cultural tour in Bergen which was great! The food was delicious and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly! We enjoyed our time wandering the streets of Bergen and learning about the history and what everyday life is like. All the Northern Lights tours were fantastic! All the guides were knowledgeable and fun to talk with. Our airport transfer in Bergen was very easy and took a lot of stress off of us after a delayed flight.

Nordic Visitor did a great job with set up for accommodation and travel within the country. Tour guides were friendly, helpful and informative. I liked the way it was set up to visit popular destinations/excursions but also allowed time to explore on your own.

One of the best experiences we have had!

Absolutely outstanding. The tour and excursion organisation was perfect, seamlessly executed. The agent, Sindre, very professional in recommending and adapting the tour to our needs. One of the best family travel experiences we have had!

I would definitely use Nordic Visitor again

It was very easy to book via Nordic Visitor, the website is easy to use and communication with my appointed rep was excellent. They planned everything, the accommodation was beautiful, easy location for the other entertainment, all documents were sent to me in good time. I would definitely use Nordic Visitor again to book my future tours.

A true winter wonderland!

This was absolutely the trip of a lifetime. We enjoyed seeing a true winter wonderland! The combination of beautiful fjord views from the boat, chasing the northern lights, dog sledding, the Snow Hotel, so many different experiences - there were a lot of beautiful moments to take in!

Absolutely superb hotels were selected. The itinerary was very clearly laid out and easily understood. Every excursion or extra activity was expecting us. We had no issues with the vouchers. We definitely feel we experienced the best of Tromsø. Great communication when excursions were cancelled because of weather conditions. Nordic Visitor was able to reschedule us on a different excursion quickly and easily. Local tours selected by Nordic Visitor were excellent, well run and definitely highlights of the trip.

Perfectly planned

The tour was well organised. Everything was perfectly planned, from the tours to the transfers to the hotels. Suggestions on what to do/see/eat were also brilliant. The detailed guide made it very easy to find out where to go and how. The hotels were conveniently located in the city centre and close to transport links. The optional tours suggested were also perfect.

Hurtigruten – Classic Round Voyage & Northern Lights

The Classic Round Voyage with Hurtigruten — a 12-day trip with 6 days spent above the Arctic Circle, providing you with the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights in their full majesty. This famed sailing with Hurtigruten is described by Lonely Planet as “ The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage “, and is also very much loved by Jane McDonald .

Imagine it… you’re standing on deck. It’s dark. The night is crisp, but you’re wrapped in warm clothing, and someone hands you a steaming hot chocolate. Suddenly, a ghostly movement of green and violet light in the sky grabs your attention. It’s the Northern Lights !

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are an unrivalled natural phenomenon. Occurring most frequently in the inky winters within the Arctic Circle, the lights are a magical and moving experience that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Don't Want To Miss A Thing

Hurtigruten, also known as the ‘Post Ship’ and ‘Coastal Express’ has been sailing this coastline since its inaugural voyage in 1893 and offers daily departures from the UNESCO-listed port of Bergen. The 12-day Classic Round Voyage to Kirkenes and back hugs this iconic coastline and spends over half its duration directly beneath the Aurora Oval – the prime location for seeing the incredible natural wonder of the Northern Lights.

The drama of the scenery and the wildlife is simply breath-taking. Twenty-two of the ports lie north of the Arctic Circle – and you are given the opportunity to join excursions tailor-made to match your exploration level. Whatever you miss on the northbound sailing during the night, you are able to see in daylight on the southbound sailing.

The essence of Norway’s appeal is remarkably simple: this is one of the most beautiful countries on earth. Join a 12-day adventure that is unmistakably Norwegian, across almost 2,500 nautical miles of spectacular coastal scenery. Along the route, you can choose from more than 90 excursions, and take part in hikes and activities led by Hurtigruten’s on-board Expedition Teams.

Voyage highlights include the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund and the beautiful Lofoten Islands.

The Northern Lights

Magic and science. Hypnotic and exhilarating. A photographer’s dream. The Northern Lights in Norway are all these and more. Explore the many wonders of nature’s greatest lightshow.

The best time to see the Northern Lights? Now!

The Solar Maximum occurs halfway through the sun’s cycle. It’s a time of intense solar activity – and dramatically more auroral displays.

Scientists predict the Solar Maximum in 2024-25 will result in the most frequent and impressive Northern Lights in more than a decade. The next Solar Maximum after 2024-25 won’t be for another 11 years until 2036.

Why sail with Hurtigruten?

5 reasons to see the northern lights on a coastal voyage.

For the last 130 years, we have been sailing along the Norwegian coastline under the glow of the Northern Lights. No-one knows them like we do.

3. Front-row views

As you sail along the coast, you’ll enjoy an unobstructed front-row seat to the ever changing background and authentic experiences.

4. Onboard announcements

We talked to people who live and breathe the northern lights about the dreams and desires that drive them. these are their stories., the aurora chaser, scientist and sage of the northern lights: dr john mason, a bonding experience: chasing the aurora as a solo traveller, what causes the northern lights.

We asked scientists and astronomers to explain the Northern Lights in a way we could understand. In return, they told us all about solar activity and magnetic fields, and explained the different types of auroras, and why they come in different colours.

They also said that a deeper understanding of the science only adds to the magic of the experience of seeing the Northern Lights.

Legends of the Lights

Long before we understood the science behind the aurora, the Northern Lights were wrapped up in myths and legends that still fuel our imaginations today.

The Lights appear in folklore across the world, as omens both revered and feared. These strange green, red, and purple lights dancing across the night skies have inspired some of the most captivating stories on Earth. Once you’ve seen them, it’s easy to understand why.

How do I photograph the Northern Lights?

When you see the Northern Lights, it’s only natural to want to capture the spectacle. But photographing their elusive beauty isn’t as simple as point-and-shoot.

To help you, we asked photography experts for their tried and trusted tips on everything from how to photograph the Northern Lights from a ship to shooting the aurora with a smartphone.

Ask about the aurora

Everything you’ve ever wanted to ask about the Northern Lights, from how often they appear to whether they affect wildlife.

hurtigruten northern lights

A Hurtigruten Northern Lights cruise was the 60th birthday gift of a lifetime

One writer takes a very special celebration cruise in search of the Northern Lights

I’m Scottish , and as a family we often travelled to Aberdeen where we caught the odd glimpse of the lights but I’d been told the best place to see nature’s greatest light show was Norway . Opting to travel with expedition specialist Hurtigruten for the Northern Lights cruise , my journey began in Tromso – famous for being one of the top places in the world to experience the illuminations.

Before setting off, I was a little apprehensive. Would I actually get to see the lights? Not everyone does. I would be on an expedition ship – how comfortable would it be? Would shore visits involve climbing steep terrain? Would I be fit enough to do so?

The minute I stepped onboard the MS Kong Harald, my concerns faded.

Setting off from Tromso

The trip took place in early December , when an impressive light show was forecast. Before we set sail on the Hurtigruten Northern Lights cruise , we visited the Planetarium and the Science Museum of Northern Norway in Tromso, where the fascinating exhibitions and educational installations helped broaden our knowledge of the natural phenomena we were likely to see.

While my cabin was basic, it was comfortable with everything I needed. MS Kong Harold is a small, intimate ship, designed to glide through tight fjords, with capacity for around 500 passengers. Unlike large ocean-going ships, you won’t find casinos and glitzy entertainment – the destination is the main event. There’s no dress code either; you’re advised to take warm clothing, especially good cotton layers and thermals for when outdoors as the wind creates a real chill factor.

As the ship set sail, I enjoyed afternoon cake and coffee while mesmerised by the coastal scenery followed by twinkling village lights as night fell. All this was taken in from the comfort of the Exploration Lounge, with its plush armchairs positioned along expansive windows to give the full skylight experience.

Tasting experiences from local producers

One of the most delightful things about the Hurtigruten Northern Lights experience is it stops at local ports where farmers and local producers bring their fresh homemade produce to the ship for sale. This makes Hurtigruten an essential part of the local economy compared to the cruise liners that stockpile produce from one or two major ports and refrigerate or freeze food en mass.

Since its launch, Hurtigruten has been the only means of accessing many remote parts of the country, stopping at over 34 ports along the Norwegian coastline. The name means 'The Express Route' and as well as linking families and communities, guests can enjoy local cheeses, bread, fruit and vegetables from small holdings along with a range of beers, wines, fresh fish and cream desserts.

NORTHERN LIGHTS WITH HURTIGRUTEN

My foodie highlight was the reindeer steaks, which, without a hint of fat, I could feast on without adding the 'cruise pounds' to the waistline. For vegetarians, there are many plant-based options available on board. During the cruise, I tried the differing dining options, selecting from the plentiful three-course buffet and enjoying the à la carte restaurant, where I was brought to tears of joy being serenaded by a 24-strong Norwegian choir. They were on board for the evening entertainment and had been alerted to my birthday celebrations. It was a nice touch organised by the Hurtigruten staff.

The Northern Lights

Together with our guides, both on sea and on land, our days were spent silenced by the magnificent scenery as we travelled through rugged snow-capped mountains and deep-blue icy fjords. The Northern Lights are best seen on a dark, clear and starry night so to capture the best illuminations, we travelled with our guides in search of a cloudless night sky without the distraction of street lights or crowds of people.

The journey was taken by minibus followed by a very short and fun walk through the snow. We found the perfect spot and set up camp on a beach by a fjord lit only by the moonlight. It was like something out of a fairy tale.

And then there it was… our first sighting of the Aurora Borealis, a celestial display of colour dancing through the sky emblazoned with colour: greens, reds, blues and pinks changing shapes like dancers behind a silk curtain.

If you want to experience the Hurtigruten Northern Lights , the time is now. The next 18 months will see an 11-year high of aurora activity and during this period the sun's magnetic activity is going through a period of solar maximum and minimum. This results in greatly intensified solar flares and coronal mass ejections, releasing high energy particles and stronger solar winds into space.

hurtigruten northern lights

According to the experts, when these charged particles interact with Earth, it heightens the aurora activity around the North Pole. Scientists have shared that this solar cycle is likely to reach its peak in 2024 to 2025, making the experience all the more exhilarating with colours and shapes intensified and constantly changing throughout the year.

Equipped with dashboards, apps, websites and an array of data sources that accurately predict where and when local activity will occur, our Hurtigruten aurora chaser, Tom Kerss, knew exactly where and when to get the best views. While many people never catch a glimpse, I experienced one of the world’s most incredible natural phenomena on three occasions of the four that Tom accompanied the ship. As the vibrant mix of colours began to dance across a starry sky, ethereal greens, reds, blues and pinks produced a wondrous display that captivated everyone.

Dazzling images and time-lapsed videos were captured in abundance that evening from beginners, like me, to seasoned professionals. Everyone left with cameras full of personal images and memories to share with family and friends back home.

A reasonably good mobile phone or camera with a tripod are worth packing for the Northern Lights displays. Tripods, warm suits, boots, and everything you need to stay toasty, along with hot soup by the campfire made our Northern Lights experience all the more comfortable, too. Tom was also on hand to thrill and entertain us with fun facts and legends about the Arctic skies throughout the night.

The Hurtigruten Northern Lights promise

The Hurtigruten Northern Lights cruise package comes with all the support you to need to make your trip magical: a team of expedition experts, aurora chasers, astronomers and guides, plus photographers to help you capture the best photos of the spectacular scenery, wildlife and, of course, those awe-inspiring skies.

Scientists are often onboard too and guests are able to get involved in helping them conduct research. What’s more, Hurtigruten promises that if you don’t see the lights, you’ll get a free cruise to try again next season.

Another welcome difference with the Hurtigruten Northern Lights experience is the younger traveller it attracts. While everyone is made to feel welcome, you'll find energetic guests in search of adventure rather than those who prefer to lounge by the pool.

The North Cape

As you reach Honningsvåg, at the top of the European mainland, be sure to get off the ship and visit the globe monument at the North Cape, the northernmost point of mainland Europe. You'll want to book early for this excursion, too, as it’s very popular.

As we continued north towards Kirkenes, we sailed past Slettnes Lighthouse, the northernmost lighthouse in continental Europe. By breakfast, we reached the top of Norway and the town of Kirkenes, situated just a few kilometres from the Russian border.

hurtigruten northern lights

It was at this point of our coastal voyage that we explored the beautifully carved Snow Hotel and Norway’s largest ice bar. There are cosy lodges to choose from if you don’t fancy a night on an ice bed, but I found it an exhilarating experience and happened to sleep very well.

From here you can greet the reindeers, enjoy an excursion crabbing on the ice covered fjords and play with the very friendly huskies that live nearby.

As my trip came to an end, I knew I would bring back memories that would last a lifetime and it also gave me the inspiration I needed to venture further and be braver in my holiday choices. It really was the best birthday present I could give myself.

For your chance to visit the Arctic Circle and chase the Northern Lights, Good Housekeeping’s 12-day voyage on the Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruise includes the highlights of Norway's spectacular coastline. Visits to the UNESCO-listed port of Bergen, the city of Tromso and the ancient Viking trading post of Trondheim are also included.

Northern Lights cruise in 2022

I want to book a cruise to see the Northern lights in October of 2022. I see that Princess has this cruise for 2021. I am wondering if anyone here knows if this is a cruise that is offered each year? I can't find any other cruise line that sails this type, except Viking. I would rather do it with Princess.

Thanks for any information. And if you have done a cruise like this, please feel free to share the details.

We're booked on the Oct 2021 cruise and I think there is an Oct 2020 one as well as one that sailed this past October. I guess it all depends on how popular it is in the coming years.

I have just returned from a cruise Search for the Northern lights. I think it was the first time it was offered. It was very cold but fantastic. We did see the Northern Lights but there is no guarantee of course.

We had snow on the decks, which was fun.

That is so exciting that you did this cruise. Could you tell me what excursions you did? And where did you see the Northern lights? From the ship or on an excursion?

We had an overnight in Alta, we did a ships tour called search for the Northern lights. The first tour on the Friday unfortunately didn’t see the lights due to cloud. We went on the Saturday night and the sky was clear. It was -8 degrees celcius with a wind chill of -12 so rug up.

You could see the lights from the ship and many people got great photos on the upper decks.

Love the picture. Thank you so much. Fingers crossed we are able to book this one for 2022 next fall.

We were late arriving in Tromsø due to the weather but we did a tour on the cable car but visibility was pretty much zero because we were there quite late in the day. We also went to a polar museum which was pretty interesting.

In Stavenger we had a cruise through the lysefjord, beautiful scenery.

In Ålesund we stayed overnight again due to the weather. We just did a city tour and had plenty of time to explore around town. You can walk to the town from the ship.

I would recommend a tour to see the lights.  While you could get great photos from the ship I personally think the photos look best with perspective from the land.  Here is a photo just of the sky and while it is beautiful it is kind of missing something.

I did this years cruise too. We certainly had some rough seas and more snow than you could poke a stick at but it was great fun. Luckily those lights showed up for us on that one night but if that's the sole purpose of taking the cruise, don't do it. I mostly did private excursions as the offerings from Princess were pretty ho hum.

Yes, Southampton. I didn’t think the seas were too bad but MrPantzOz says they were rough.

There are cruises to see Northern Lights in October 2021 sailing from Southampton with P&O cruises and I should imagine they will be repeated in 2022.

Also true for Fred Olsen, Regent, Silversea and Lindblad.  Celebrity talks about it but I didn't see any voyages.

We recently booked a Hurtigruten roundtrip coastal cruise out of Bergen to see the Northern Lights.  They offer expedition voyages which are more like traditional cruises and cruises on their coastal ferry boats.  We chose the coastal ferry just for the adventure of it.  For cruises after October 1, they even offer a Northern Lights Guarantee.

There are some good Hurtigruten videos on YouTube.

That Northern Lights Guarantee could be important.  Solar Cycle 25, lasting through 2030, is predicted to short on the types of solar activity that causes auroras.

It reflects their confidence in seeing the northern lights. If you don't see the northern lights, they'll give you another cruise.  I read several threads on the Hurtigruten board to get a feel for what the coastal cruises were like and also watched several videos on YouTube.

Hubby and I also want to see the Northern Lights in October 2022 - sure hope Princess offer this cruise.  I will also have a look at P & O UK.  Anyone have any ideas when Princess will release the October 2022 sailings??  Think I’ll be waiting for a while though. 😞

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
