Description

Cool Key West is happy to offer Key West glass-bottom boat tours, one of the island’s most popular attractions, as part of an exciting Miami to Key West Day Trip combination package. In one fun, busy day you can sightsee the full length of the Florida Keys on the incredible Overseas Highway, explore the living coral reefs in the Gulf of Mexico waters just offshore from Key West, and spend some time visiting historic Old Town Key West.

This great day trip is an easy way to spice up your Miami vacation with a Key West tour and some play time in the Caribbean paradise of the Lower Keys. Get complementary transfer service to the tour departure point from most hotels in Downtown Miami and Miami Beach. Then, after a 7:45am departure from downtown Miami, you will travel down the Keys in the comfort of a luxurious modern touring coach. It’s the convenient, economical way to visit Key West, and you can enjoy a glass-bottom boat ride along with a bit of playtime in Key West without having to worry about the long drive back to Miami at the end of the day.

This 1-day Key West tour begins on U.S. Highway 1 running south out of Miami through the Southern Everglades. About an hour later, the highway leaves the Florida mainland and crosses the narrow land bridge that stretches between the shallow inshore waters of Barnes and Blackwater Sounds. This is the northern end of the Overseas Highway, and minutes later the coach rolls onto the resort island of Key Largo then turns southwest to start along the Florida Keys island chain on one of America’s most iconic scenic drives.

The Overseas Highway is an incredible example of innovative road construction. Much of the roadway follows the former roadbed of the Overseas Railroad, a railway connection to Key West built between 1905 and 1912 by Standard Oil baron and railroad magnate Henry Flagler.

Flagler wanted to extend his Florida East Coast Railway to offer trade and tourist access to the island of Key West 128 miles from the tip of the Florida Peninsula. Often referred to as Flagler’s Folly because the Overseas Railroad pushed the limits of early 20th century construction engineering capabilities, the route threaded along narrow islands and crossed numerous bridges over open sea.

The daring project had a short operating lifespan, closing permanently in 1935 when a Category 5 hurricane destroyed the central portion of the rail line. However, Flagler’s brave vision left a legacy in the form of one of the world’s most spectacularly scenic highways. As it crosses 43 bridges and 31 islands, the Overseas Highway offers many expansive views over open ocean. Emerald water, white sand, beautiful resorts, busy marinas, and lively small towns make the ride to Key West one of the most interesting trips you will ever take.

A world-class Overseas Highway attraction comes into view about 90 minutes into the drive, when the touring coach reaches the western end of Marathon Key. The legendary Seven Mile Bridge rises gracefully above the water and carries the roadway across 6.79 miles of open sea to touch down on tiny, uninhabited Little Duck Key.

Although the bridge rises to 65 feet high in an arch placed near Pigeon Key for the purpose of accommodating ship traffic, the road is only about 20 feet above the water for most of its span. This gives passengers in crossing vehicles a wonderful feeling of low-skimming flight above the clear water. The Seven Mile Bridge has been highlighted in several action movies including the two of the Fast and Furious films, and it is certainly an unforgettable part of every journey to Key West.

When the coach leaves this astounding bridge, you enter the Lower Keys. Here, the Caribbean island atmosphere dominates as Backcountry bays and channels alternate with undeveloped tropical bushlands, small Old Keys communities, modern luxury resorts and marinas, and the occasional waterfront trophy home. Time flashes by like the scenery, and the coach reaches Key West and pulls into Old Town at about 12:00 noon. There is just time to grab a snack and look around a bit then proceed to the harbor where your glass-bottom boat awaits.

Departing at 2:00pm, the boat runs about 30 minutes out into the pristine waters of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Enjoy the sun on the open upper deck, grab some refreshments from the snack bar and sit in the air-conditioned cabin, use the clean, spacious restrooms, take some pictures, and enjoy the boat ride. Soon the vessel reaches the shallow Backcountry flats where patch coral reefs and a rich variety of marine life can be found.

The glass-bottom boat’s high-tech viewing windows are designed so that every passenger gets a great underwater view of one of the world’s most biologically diverse eco-systems. It's an amazing educational experience, and guests of all ages are thrilled by the multitudes of fish representing more than 400 species. Strange-looking sponges, colorful corals, and large creatures such as sea turtles, rays, and sportfish are often sighted. An expert guide is on hand to provide narration, explanation, and answers to any questions.

Besides being great fun, a Key West glass-bottom boat tour is also the environmentally-friendly way to experience the wonders of the fragile coral gardens. A top Key West attraction since the first glass-bottom boat on the island was launched in late 19th-century, a glass-bottom boat cruise is the perfect pairing for an Overseas Highway tour and some afternoon fun in exciting Key West.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Inside Key West invites you to experience sightseeing on the incredible Overseas Highway, then depart from Key West in the afternoon on a state-of-the-art glass-bottom boat to observe the amazing coral reefs and marine life of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It’s a beautiful ride in air-conditioned comfort aboard a luxury touring coach, and you will arrive in Key West rested, enjoy an unforgettable day, then return to Miami refreshed at about 10:00 pm.

Take advantage of convenient free morning pickup service from most hotels in South Beach, Miami Beach, or Downtown Miami and transfer to the departure point to board the clean, modern touring coach. Soft, aircraft-style reclining seats are perfect for the 4-hour drive down the entire length of the Florida Keys. As the coach heads south from Downtown Miami, get ready for a thrilling ride through the Southern Everglades and across the narrow land bridge from the Mainland onto Key Largo, northernmost island in the Florida Keys chain.

Beginning in Key Largo, U.S. Highway 1 becomes the legendary Overseas Highway. As the coach follows this spectacular road southwest across both inhabited and uninhabited islands, you get a constant stream of superb views over the emerald and blue waters of the Florida Straits and the Gulf of Mexico. Listen to the narrated tour and enjoy the view, take photos, read a book, or simply relax and nap during the smooth, peaceful ride.

The coach traverses 31 islands separated by 43 bridges over open water as it travels down the Keys. The highlight of the trip is traveling over the renowned Seven Mile Bridge. Spanning 6.79 miles of open water, soaring high above the turquoise waves, this engineering marvel is famous for producing the sensation of flying low and fast over the sea. You might recognize some of the views because the bridge has been featured in many television shows and popular action movies including the Fast and Furious series.

The western end of the Seven Mile Bridge marks the beginning of the Lower Keys. Passing through open tropical bush lands and tiny seaside towns, running swiftly along white-sand shorelines and past marina harbors, the coach arrives in Key West around 12:00 noon. There is time to grab a bit of lunch and get ready for more adventure, then you will go aboard a sleek high-tech glass-bottom catamaran for a cruise out into the crystal waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The boat features sun deck seating, clean, spacious restrooms, a snack bar, and an air-conditioned enclosed viewing area specially designed to provide all passengers with an excellent look at the sea bottom passing under the boat. The visibility through the observation panels is good, similar to looking through a dive mask. It's easy to get a close-up perspective of one of the most biologically diverse marine eco-systems in the world.

Description

Looking for the perfect Key West tour to include in an exciting Miami to Key West day trip? The Key West Express presents one of the most popular Miami to Key West tours – a day that combines a scenic road trip along the length of the Florida Keys with an afternoon marine adventure aboard one of the best Key West glass-bottom boats. And you also get some time to explore historic Old Town Key West.

Arrange a free morning pickup from any hotel in Sunny Isles Beach, Miami Beach, or Downtown Miami. Then check in for the 7:45am departure, board the luxurious modern touring coach, and settle into a soft, comfortable seat for the scenic 4-hour drive down the famous Overseas Highway. Enjoy the view out the oversize windows and listen to the narrated tour, take photos, read a book, or just sit back and relax – our coaches are made for traveling in style. Plan on arriving in Key West rested and ready to play, enjoying an unforgettable fun-filled day, then returning to Miami at about 10:00 in the evening.

Following the Overseas Highway from Key Largo south down the Keys offers endless superb views out over the waters of the Florida Straits and the Gulf of Mexico. The highway crosses open water on 43 bridges that link 31 different Keys. At the southwest end of Marathon Key, the road climbs onto the renowned Seven Mile Bridge.

The Seven Mile Bridge has been featured in many action movies including Bad Boys, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and True Lies. Crossing the spectacular span gives a feeling of flying low over emerald blue water as the coach speeds along the elevated roadway. This world-class feat of bridge engineering stretches above miles of blue water before touching down on uninhabited Little Duck Key. The road then crosses 3 short bridges to Bahia Honda Key, the gateway to the tropical world of the Lower Keys.

Crossing the Lower Keys offers glimpses of old Florida as blue water, white sand, small communities, and expanses of undeveloped tropical bush country roll past outside the window. Around noon, you will arrive in Old Town Key West refreshed and ready for adventure. Waiting at the harbor with seats reserved for your 2:00pm departure is a modern version of the classic Key West glass-bottom boats that have been a leading island attraction since the late 1800s.

After casting off on a cruise over the crystal waters of Key West into one of the most biologically diverse marine ecosystems in the world, you are free to explore the upper sun deck, go out on the bow for some photos, hit the snack bar for a beverage and some chips, or use the clean, spacious restrooms. It takes about 30 minutes to run out to the reefs, and the high-tech catamaran design of the glass-bottom boat makes the ride smooth and totally enjoyable.

Specially designed to introduce visitors to the life of the reef while causing minimal impact on the unique coral ecosystem, this amazing vessel gives every passenger room for a great look at the underwater world. The innovative underwater windows deliver views similar to what you would see through a dive mask without the need to get wet.

An expert guide narrates the tour and helps you identify colorful corals, exotic sponges, and sea creatures including fish from over 400 species.

Virgin Voyages' guide to Cruise Key West

A haven for artists and sunset-seekers alike, the only poetic rival to the writers who called Key West home is the geography itself.

It’s all a breeze in the keys

With it’s fiercely independent personality and leave-your-last-name-at-the-dock attitude, Key West is a celebration of cultural collision — with Bahamian Conch, Cuban and African-American heritage permeating the spirit and inclusive philosophy of the island known as “One Human Family”.

More than its pirate past and raucous Duval Street parties (although, to be fair, those are worth the hype), Key West is home to an ever-evolving community of boundary-pushing artists and dedicated preservationists—lined with pastel-colored houses and nights spent toasting sunsets so incredible they inspire some of the world’s most sacred art.

Head out on the turquoise waters of the gulf to watch bottlenose dolphins as they swim, play, feed and do whatever else they please. Afterwards, head back to the wildlife refuge, where you can snorkel along the shallow backcountry.

Key West Rum and Cigar Tasting Tour

Technically located closer to Cuba than it is to Miami, the cigar and rum industry in Key West is as historically fascinating as it is… straight-up fun. Try some rum at the Papa Pilar Rum Distillery at the Hemingway Rum Company, which functions as both a distillery and a museum.

The Duval Crawl: Key West's Pub Crawl

The best way to see a famous Key West tradition while also letting loose because, yes, you are on vacation via the “Duval Crawl”—the downtown pub crawl. The vibe of the crawl is a cross between the famous chill Florida Keys atmosphere, a splattering of upbeat live music and Caribbean drinks that taste exactly like a vacation should.

Parasail the Painted Island Skies

Float through the air as one of the 12-passenger parasailing boats glides you past sights that can only be seen from the air. As you parasail, take a look below to spot dolphins playing in the surf, or colorful tropical birds flying past.

When the sun sets in Key West… you’ll know. And not just because a myriad of artists from Jimmy Buffet to Judy Blume will make art inspired by the island’s evening end. You’ll know because the sky lights up like fire—tangerine and gold stretching far and wide across the Caribbean sea as you pull away from the dock. Setting on a day spent in a place that goes far beyond a bachelor and bachelorette party destination—where the best of New Orleans and Nantucket meet in the Caribbean to create a little island with a very big personality.

From Miami to Key West: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Bryan Dearsley Updated Jan 31, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Located 160 miles southwest of Miami, Key West has the distinction of being the southernmost city in the continental United States. "The Conch Republic," as it's known to locals, is also the most Caribbean-like travel destination in Florida, and it has something of an "anything goes" reputation for its laid-back attitude to, well, pretty much everything.

For these and so many other reasons – a lovely climate for most of the year, plenty of attractions and fun things to do, along with a great food scene – Key West is very much the kind of place you'll want to visit time and time again.

Getting here can be part of the fun, too. While it's accessible via a variety of means of transport, you should certainly take the dramatic US1 Highway at least once. Also known as the Overseas Highway , this spectacularly scenic route offers no end of stunning vistas and great places to stop for a taste of that unique Keys' lifestyle.

For more on this and other best ways to get to Key West from Miami, be sure to read our guide.

1. From Miami to Key West by Car

Road from Miami to Key West

The scenery along the Overseas Highway (US1) is simply stunning, with a great deal of this iconic 113-mile-long route (170 if you count the stretch from Miami to the start of the Overseas Highway) being above water.

While the journey takes an average of just over three-and-a-half hours without a break (longer if it's a weekend or rush hour), you'll want to add at least an hour or so extra for photo stops. And be sure to set your satellite navigation just for the thrill of seeing yourself surrounded on all sides by ocean on your digital map!

If you have even more time to spend along this iconic route, consider a stop at one or more of the larger communities along the Florida Keys, some of which offer a variety of great tourist attractions . Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key, for example, boasts two great beaches and the National Key Deer Refuge Nature Center. Marathon is home to the Dolphin Research Center, which offers a variety of unique feeding and swim experiences, as well as the fascinating Turtle Hospital.

If you're not driving your own vehicle, you'd do well to consider picking up a car rental at either Miami or Key West and do at least one one-way journey by road. The bragging rights alone are worth it.

Finally, a word about parking in Key West: it's difficult! A good alternative is to make use of the first-rate Key West Park N' Ride service, located out of the Old Town Garage on Grinnell and Caroline Streets. You can leave your vehicle here for the full day and enjoy all-day shuttle rides around town.

2. From Miami to Key West by Tour

Sign on the beach in Key West

For those vacationing in Miami but wanting to get a taste for the Keys, a Miami to Key West day trip may be just the ticket. Departures are early – around 6am, with pickups available from hotels and other locations – but you can certainly expect a very full day's itinerary on this fun trip (you'll be gone for approximately 13 hours ).

A definite highlight is the three-plus-hour drive along the overseas Highway. Along the way, you'll take in popular landmarks such as the famous Seven Mile Bridge. One of the world's longest bridges, this spectacular road bridge still runs alongside the original rail bridge dating from 1912 and is still in use by walkers and cyclists.

All told, you'll cross some 42 bridges and 34 islands on your way to Key West. You'll learn more about these and other interesting facts on your air-conditioned journey through the interesting commentary from a qualified guide.

Once in Key West, you'll have six hours to explore this amazing Caribbean island-city at your own pace. Be sure to also check out the additional tour options available to help you maximize your fun. These include jet skiing adventures and cruises, all of which can be added to your itinerary when booking.

The drop-off/pickup location in Key West is the centrally located Flagler Museum. From here, you can easily access the famous Duval Street, the life and lively soul of Key West. In addition to no-end of great food and drink options, the shopping is superlative.

3. From Miami to Key West by Plane

Aerial view of Key West

By far the fastest means of getting to Key West from Miami is by flying. Taking just under an hour for a direct flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Key West International Airport (EYW), the route is served by a number of airlines, including American Airlines .

Although it's a short flight , be sure to factor in additional time at the airports. While there are no customs or border facilities to navigate for internal flights like this, security checks can take some time, especially in the busier travel seasons. Fares cost upwards of $200 depending on the time of year, so be sure to check for any flight deals.

For those for whom money isn't an issue (or who can share the expense among friends or family), private charters also operate along this route. Reputable charter companies worth considering include evoJets and Air Key West .

A more affordable option than a private jet, Keys Seaplanes offer floatplane services that can get you to pretty much any point around Key West - even directly to your resort. They also offer a variety of fun sightseeing flights .

While not an issue in Key West given the airport's proximity to the downtown core around Duval Street – it's only a short ride away – getting in and out of Miami's much larger facility can be more challenging. Since a taxi or Uber ride in Miami can be costly for those traveling in and out of the city, and traffic can be heavy, consider using public transit, such as the efficient Metrorail and Tri-Rail services (buses are available but subject to congestion during rush hour).

4. From Miami to Key West by Boat

Boats near Key West

While there is no regular ferry service between Miami and Key West, there are still a few different options for those determined to arrive by water. Your best bet is to look into a charter boat. Miami Charters offer a variety of options, from high-speed boats to laid-back sailing yachts, as well as fishing charters.

Worth mentioning for those traveling from the Gulf coast of Florida, the Key West Express offers a daily service to Key West from Fort Myers and Marco Island . Departures are early morning, with return voyages taking place late afternoon.

5. From Miami to Key West by Bus

Southernmost point in the continental USA in Key West

For those on a tight budget – and who aren't in a hurry (it can take up to five hours ) – the regular bus service between Miami and Key West is certainly a good option. Greyhound Lines offer frequent daily departures, including pickups and drop-offs at Miami International Airport and, of course, Key West, for as little as $20 each way.

A smaller bus experience can be enjoyed via Keys Shuttle , which offers frequent daily service between Miami and Key West – as well as regional airports – and most destinations in between.

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

Big Nude Boat cruise sailing dates and destinations:

The ship departs from the Port of Miami on Feb. 3 and returns to the same port on Feb. 14.
