Krakow to Prague – how to travel between these two amazing cities

These two amazing cities and real gems of Central Europe might look close to each other but getting from Krakow to Prague can be more time consuming than you think and sometimes even challenging a bit. The public transport in the region is far from being perfect but with some of my tips on how to get from Krakow to Prague (or from Prague to Krakow) you should be fine.

As a resident and frequent traveler in Central Europe, I know the region inside out and will gladly share my knowledge with you to make your trip smoother. Once you are done with visiting all the amazing things to do in Krakow you can easily travel to the Czech capital. Here is a guide about how to travel from Krakow to Prague.

Central Europe essentials

Planning a trip to Central Europe? Here are the services I always use and personally recommend:

Krakow to Prague by plane

The fastest option would be of course flying from Krakow to Prague (or the other way around) but the timing might not be right for you. Currently, there is only one airline, Ryanair, serving this route. There are departures twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, and the flying time is around one hour.

You can find one way tickets even for as little as 65 PLN / 15€ / $18 but remember that’s a basic price and if you want to take the extra luggage, choose a seat or use any other service you will be charged extra.

The best way to get from the center of Krakow to the airport is by train. They depart from the main station every hour or so, the journey time is 20 minutes and the ticket costs 9 PLN ($2,38 / €2,10). You can get the ticket at the tickets office, at the tickets machine or inside the train.

In Prague, the easiest and cheapest way to reach the center (or any other place in the city really) is the combination of bus and metro. First, you need to take bus no 119 from the airport to the nearest metro station – Nadrazi Veleslavin where you can easily transfer to the green metro line A and continue to your destination. The regular public transport ticket is valid for this connection.

Krakow to Prague by train

There are three daily direct train connections between Krakow and Prague, operated by different carriers. They also vary in the travel time and comfort.

These are current departures of trains from Krakow to Prague:

  • 04:57, arriving at 11:23 (travel time 6:26), company Leo Express, probably the most comfortable one but sometimes the service is suspended
  • 10:22, arriving at 17:39 (travel time 7:17), company PKP Intercity / Ceske Drahy (Polish and Czech national railway carriers)
  • 22:34, arriving at 07:31 (travel time 08:57), company PKP Intercity / Ceske Drahy (Polish and Czech national railway carriers). This is a good option if you want to save the time and travel overnight but I do recommend getting a place in the couchette/sleeping car – not only you will rest much better, it will be also safer and thefts do happen on this route

The trains from Prague to Krakow currently depart at this time:

  • 10:24, arriving at 17:29, company PKP Intercity / Ceske Drahy (Polish and Czech national railway carriers)
  • 16:09, arriving at 22:40, company Leo Express, probably the most comfortable one
  • 22:15, arriving at 06:16, company PKP Intercity / Ceske Drahy (Polish and Czech national railway carriers). Read my recommendations about the night train journey from Krakow to Prague above, they apply for the reverse route as well

You can also go by train from Krakow to Prague with a change and sometimes it might be a bit faster than the direct connection. Leo Express offers the ticket for their bus+train too.

You can check current train schedule at www.bahn.de . Unfortunately, you can get the ticket only at the train station (with the exception of Leo Express and RegioJet, those you can buy online here ). The price starts at €19/one way.

Krakow to Prague by bus

There are also several bus connections from Krakow to Prague but those usually take longer than train and are less comfortable. The journey time is at least 8 hours.

You can check schedule and buy your ticket here.

Krakow to Prague by bus and train

If you can dedicate a whole day to travel from Krakow to Prague (or better two or three days!) I have the best solution that no one really talks about. Go via Cieszyn , a charming little town on the Polish-Czech border that happens to be among my very favorite place on Earth. I honestly think this is the best way to travel from Krakow to Prague as the journey doesn’t seem so long and tiring.

It used to be one city but was divided by the Polish-Czech border in 1920. Not only it will be a very affordable journey, but you will also be able to see some lovely places between Krakow and Prague that you normally wouldn’t probably stop at.

The first step is to get from Krakow to Cieszyn. There are 11 direct buses per day, the journey takes around 2,5 hours and the one way ticket costs 24 PLN / $7 / €6. The earliest departure from Krakow main bus station is at 6:00 in the morning, arriving to Cieszyn at 8:25. You can check the schedule here .

Once in Cieszyn you can go directly across the border to the train station in Cesky Tesin on the Czech side, the walk will take you some 20-30 minutes (fortunately it’s downhill that way). But to be honest I would recommend you to stay for a few hours in Cieszyn and see the town as it’s really lovely!

From the bus station to Cieszyn it’s a short walk to the beautiful main square, charming old center, the Piast Tower with a stunning view of Poland and the Czech Republic and a Romanesque rotunda from the 12th century that you can find on the 20 Polish złoty bill. Don’t miss eating the famous local sandwich with herring or Prince Polo – one of the most famous chocolate bars in Poland (and Iceland !) that originates from Cieszyn.

You can read more about Cieszyn in these articles I wrote:

  • Visit Cieszyn – reasons to fall in love with this beautiful city
  • Cieszyn, Poland – Central Europe in a nutshell
  • Cieszyn/Český Těšín – the most confusing place I’ve ever visited

krakow to prague

Once you are done with visiting Cieszyn you can just walk across the border bridge on Olza river to find yourself in Cesky Tesin – a part of the city that belongs to the Czech Republic now. It is not as rich in monuments as the Polish side of the city but worth a walk too, especially to see the pre-war architecture.

From Cesky Tesin two train operators offer direct connections to Prague: Ceske Drahy (the Czech national railway company) and RailJet. Often the second one has better fares but it all depends on the time of the departure or the time of the ticket’s purchase.

There are numerous connections from Cesky Tesin to Prague, the journey takes usually around 4 hours. Currently, the last train departs from Cesky Tesin at 18:41, arriving at Prague main station at 22:19.

Krakow to Prague itinerary for 3-4 days trip

If you have more than just one day for the journey from Krakow to Prague there are more interesting and beautiful places to stop at along the way. It is really worth to take a slow trip from Krakow to Prague to see more than just the main cities. You can experience a true spirit and see the real beauty of Central Europe.

krakow to prague

From Krakow take the bus to Bielsko-Biala, the journey takes around 2 hours. Bielsko-Biała is often called “a little Vienna” and you will quickly see why – the architecture here is splendid, with so many examples of the beautiful art-nouveau style. Bielsko-Biała has lots of attractions and interesting museums and it’s worth to stop here at least for a few hours.

From here you can get to Cieszyn in just half an hour (if choosing a fast bus that goes from Krakow), where you should stay overnight. I’ve been to Cieszyn so many times I can’t count but I always stayed at these places and can recommend them with my whole heart:

  • 3 Bros’ Hostel Cieszyn (9.3/10 on Booking)
  • 3 Bros’ Apart (8.5/10 on Booking)
  • Deer Apart (9.6/10 on Booking)
  • Upper Apart (9.3/10 on Booking)

If you can – spend two nights in Cieszyn so you will have plenty of time to see all the attractions on both sides of the river (and there are many of them!) as well as enjoy the unique atmosphere of the town. I always find the excuse to visit Cieszyn and just spend some time there, it’s such a wonderful place!

krakow to prague

After seeing Cieszyn catch a train from the station on the Czech side of the city to Ostrava, the connections are very frequent. While the city itself has a pleasant center the main reason to stop here is to visit Dolni Oblast Vitkovice and see the industrial heritage of Ostrava and Silesia region. This is where the amazing Colours of Ostrava festival takes place every summer but even if there is no event taking place there it is a fascinating site to explore.

krakow to prague

From Ostrava, you should continue to Olomouc, another beautiful Central European town that is a perfect alternative to Prague. Again, the connections are frequent (at least every hour) and the journey time is around 1 hour.

In Olomouc be sure to check the main square with the UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column and a quirky astronomical clock in the socialist realist style. But the best thing to do in Olomouc is to just wander around winding lanes and enjoy the place. Click here to read more I wrote about Olomouc.

You should stay here overnight too, I recommend Miss Sophie’s (9.4/10 on Booking) – it’s one of these places where you feel so good you don’t want to leave! Click here to book a place at Miss Sophie’s Olomouc.

krakow to prague

From Olomouc, there are frequent trains to Prague too so you can catch one whatever time works for you. Two hours after boarding the train in Olomouc you will arrive to your destination – a beautiful capital of the Czech Republic.

As you can see traveling from Krakow to Prague or in the reverse direction, from Prague to Krakow is not that difficult, especially if you know some tricks (like with crossing the border on foot in Cieszyn).

Both countries are part of the Schengen zone so you don’t need to worry about the border control. In fact, you won’t even notice when you cross the border from Poland to the Czech Republic (unless you do it in Cieszyn, there are boards and the line on the street telling you are crossing from one country to another but that’s actually a fun experience).

The trip should be really smooth and enjoyable and both Krakow and Prague are amazing cities to visit. Have a great trip and if you have any questions about Poland, the Czech Republic or traveling in Central Europe feel free to join my Facebook group and ask there!

Great article! As someone who has lived in Cieszyn (and used to work with the 3 Bros) and now lives in Olomouc, this is great info to help people not miss out on other spots. We are a big fan of Miss Sophies, too (they are friends of ours), but I would also like to mention us at Poets’ Corner Hostel for people more on a budget and wanted the hostel vibes. Be grateful for the shout out! And please stop by next time you are in Olomouc!

Krakow to Prague - 15 Best Ways to Travel in 2024

24 Oct. 2023 by Kamilla

Krakow (Poland) and Prague (Czech Republic) are among the most beautiful places in Europe that are popular among travelers. And it’s no surprise as both offer plenty of things to see and do: historical sites, charming old towns, plenty of alternative sights, and so much more. Krakow and Prague are must-stops in every Central European itinerary.

If you are wondering how to get from Krakow to Prague, look no further; we’ve got you covered. We created the most comprehensive and up-to-date guide on traveling from Krakow to Prague, where you can find all the necessary information for a smooth and hassle-free trip. Read on and plan your perfect Krakow to Prague travel adventure!

1. Krakow to Prague by Train

The most popular way to travel from Krakow to Prague is by train. There are three companies that operate on this route: the national one, PKP Intercity (Polish) / Ceske Drahy (Czech), and two private ones, Leo Express and RegioJet. You will most likely take the PKP Intercity Krakow to Prague train, so we will focus on it first.

There are three daily train connections from Krakow to Prague, departing from the beautiful Polish city at 10:45, 14:56, and 22:42. The day trains from Krakow to Prague take around 7 hours. Tickets for these connections start at €15 if you buy in advance and can jump up to €60 if you buy shortly before the departure.

Alternatively, you can take the train with the convenient change in either Katowice (Poland) or Hranice na Morave (Czech Republic) - the Krakow to Prague train time and the ticket prices are similar to those for direct connections. Unfortunately, there is no direct Krakow to Prague high-speed train.

Where to buy Krakow to Prague train ticket The best place to purchase the ticket is online at the Ceske Drahy (Czech Railways) website - it’s more user-friendly than the PKP Intercity (Polish Railways) website ; you don’t need to create an account to go through the buying process. You can’t also buy tickets for all the connections on the Polish website (some of them are available only at the train station), while Ceske Drahy offers you all the tickets online.

Prices are similar on both websites, so we suggest choosing the one that makes the purchase easier and smoother.

If you need to buy the ticket at the train station in Krakow, you can find the ticket desks in the underground part of the station, in the corridor behind all the shops. Keep in mind that this is one of the busiest train stations in Poland, so don’t leave your purchase until the last moment, as the lines can get long, and you don’t want to risk missing your train.

Krakow to Prague night train Besides the day train, there’s also a Krakow to Prague night train that is a great way to travel between the cities. Since both Poland and the Czech Republic are in the Schengen Zone, you can enjoy a hassle-free journey and a good sleep with no passport control in the middle of the night.

This is a great solution for those who want to save time on traveling as well as some money on accommodation. With the departure from Krakow at 22:42 and arrival to Prague at 7:38, you will get almost nine hours of rest, and you can start exploring as soon as you arrive in the Czech capital.

Krakow to Prague night has three different cars to choose from: second class (with six or eight seats in the compartment, depending on the car), couchettes (with six beds), and sleeping cars (with 1, 2, or 3 beds in the compartment).

The price for the Krakow to Prague night train starts at €25 for the seat in the second class when bought in advance; the closer it is to the departure date, the more expensive the ticket gets. If you want to travel in the couchette or the sleeping car, you need to pay extra for the bed (for example, the bed in the three-person compartment costs around €15 but if you would like to have the whole compartment to yourself you need to pay €50).

Overall, the extra fee for the couchette/sleeping car isn’t very high, and we recommend considering it as not only will you sleep better, but it will also be a safer trip. This train route is known for pickpockets, but every couchette or sleeping car has a dedicated person looking after the car and passengers; moreover, each compartment has a lock on the door you can use.

Krakow to Prague RegioJet train Another company that offers the Krakow to Prague sleeper train is RegioJet. They operate one daily connection, departing from Krakow at 1:30 a.m. and arriving in the Czech capital at 9:56. This train has second class and sleeping cars with three or four beds per compartment available.

Prices for this connection are €18,90 for the second class ticket and €32,90 for the sleeping car; if you prefer to have the whole sleeping compartment to yourself, you can expect to pay €100 for your Krakow to Prague trip.

If you decide to take the RegioJet train, the only place to buy the tickets is directly on their website . Since this train starts in Przemysl, near the border with Ukraine, it is a popular connection. It’s often sold out, so it is better not to leave the ticket purchase until the last moment.

Krakow to Prague Leo Express train You can also take the Krakow to Prague direct train operated by another company - Leo Express. The catch is that this connection doesn’t run every day, so you must be careful when planning your trip. Krakow to Prague Leo Express trains depart only on Mondays and Saturdays, leaving Krakow at 5:39 and arriving in Prague at 12:31.

Tickets start at €25 if purchased in advance and cost €47 for last-minute trips. You can buy the ticket online directly at the Leo Express website .

Train stations in Krakow and Prague The main train station in Krakow - Kraków Główny - is located on the edge of the Old Town, some 15 minutes walking from the Main Square. You can also easily reach it by public transport as numerous trams and buses stop here (the most convenient stops are Dworzec Główny Tunel, Dworzec Główny Zachód, or Teatr Słowackiego).

Once you arrive in Prague, you can also use public transport to reach your final destination; the red metro line C stops at the central train station.

2. Krakow to Prague Transfer Tour

Want to use your time traveling from Krakow to Prague in a better way than simply moving between the two cities? Then take the Krakow to Prague Transfer Tour . This tour not only ensures a seamless and stress-free transfer but also allows you to explore two unique destinations along the way.

Stop 1: Olomouc Old Town The trip leaves from Krakow in the morning and after a nearly three-hour drive you'll arrive to the first stop of the day - Olomouc in the Czech Republic. Here, you'll encounter the country's second-largest and second-oldest historic area (after Prague), packed with attractions that await your exploration. During your visit, you will explore the beautiful Old Town with its two squares, wander along cobbles winding lanes surrounded by historical buildings in different styles (such as Renaissance, Gothic, or Baroque), and admire impressive churches or the medieval town hall.

Be sure to check the astronomical clock on the side of the town hall, too! It’s a one-of-a-kind structure, designed in the Socialist Realism style in the 1950s after the original clock from the 15th century was destroyed during World War 2. If you are lucky, you can even witness the small show the clock makes. But the most important monument in Olomouc Old Town is the Holy Trinity Column from the early 1700s, the largest structure of that kind in Europe. It’s imposing and rich in details; hence, it was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site title.

After the lunch break, you will leave Olomouc and head towards your next destination - Kutna Hora.

Stop 2:  Kutna Hora & The Famous Bone Church Even if today this is a rather sleepy town, back in medieval times, Kutna Hora was a thriving mining town, a second-important place in the region after Prague. Today, you can still find remnants of those prosperous times, especially the stunning Cathedral of St Barbara. The works on this impressive structure started in the late 14th century. As a result, the cathedral is an excellent mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles, with the distinctive tower dominating the area.

But the most popular and intriguing place to visit in Kutna Hora is Sedlec Ossuary, where you will stop during your Krakow to Prague sightseeing transfer too. This modest building is better known as the Bone Chapel, as inside, you will find bones of about forty thousand people, exhumated from the local cemetery in the 1500s. In the late 19th century, some of the bones were used to create interesting sculptures, such as a chandelier or the Schwarzenberg family coat of arms. While Sedlec Ossuary might seem like a morbid place, it is worth a visit as it’s one of the most unique places to see in Central Europe.

From Kutna Hora, it’s a short, one-hour drive to Prague.

The Krakow to Prague Transfer Tour takes around ten hours, so it is only a little longer than using public transport between the two cities, yet you can add two interesting stops to your itinerary that normally would be difficult to see. You will travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, accompanied by a tour guide who will tell you more about the region and answer all your questions.

The  Krakow to Prague Transfer Tour  is available both as a public tour, departing and arriving at central areas of both cities, as well as a private option only for your group with hotel pickup and drop-off.

3. Krakow to Prague by Bus

A popular alternative to the train is the Krakow to Prague bus. A few companies operate on this route, with around ten daily direct connections between the cities (some of them are overnight, which can help you save time on travel).

Depending on the connection, the Krakow to Prague journey time varies between 7 and 12 hours; on average, you can count on spending around nine hours traveling between these two cities by bus.

Some buses go from Ukraine, so the departure from Krakow might be delayed, depending on the time at the border. We don’t recommend choosing those connections because of the uncertainty of travel. Instead, we suggest taking the popular companies, like Flixbus. You can get the overview of the Krakow to Prague bus schedule here .

Flixbus from Krakow to Prague There are five direct Krakow to Prague Flixbus connections, with tickets starting at €22 (shortly before the departure, you can expect to pay around €40). You can buy the ticket directly at the Flixbus website . Even if buses are not as comfortable as trains, Flixbus vehicles have plenty of leg space and complimentary wifi and power sockets next to each seat, so the journey isn’t that bad.

Bus stations in Krakow and Prague All the buses depart from the MDA bus station in Krakow, located next to the main train station (on the other side than the shopping center Galeria Krakowska). In Prague, you will arrive at the bus station Florenc, well-connected with the rest of the city by public transport, including the metro (red line C).

4. Krakow to Prague by Bus+Train

Since you will be spending a big part of your day traveling from Krakow to Prague, there is an interesting option to consider that not many people know about. It’s the combination of taking a bus and a train, with a short walk across the border in between. Not only will your journey not be monotonous, but you will also have a chance to see one of the most interesting yet underrated towns in Poland - Cieszyn.

For centuries, this was one town, until 1920, when during the post-WW1 turmoil and geopolitical changes in the region, Cieszyn was divided between Poland and the Czech Republic, with the border right in the middle of the town, on the Olza River. Now, with both countries in the Schengen Zone, you can easily walk between two countries.

Krakow to Cieszyn by bus The first step is to take the bus from Krakow to Cieszyn. There are seven direct buses every day (plus two more on Fridays and Sundays), with a travel time of 2.5 hours. The bus ticket from Krakow to Cieszyn costs around €7; you can buy it at the company’s website that serves this route - Lajkonik- where you can also check the schedule. Currently, the first bus departs from Krakow (MDA bus station) at 8:05, and we recommend taking it so you can use your day traveling from Krakow to Prague to the fullest.

Visiting Cieszyn Once you arrive in Cieszyn, you can either go directly to the Czech side of the town to catch the train to Prague or spend a few hours enjoying this beautiful town. The Old Town is located some 10-minute walk from the bus station, and that’s where you will find most of the Cieszyn’s attractions: the charming main square surrounded with some stunning townhouses, the castle, or the Romanesque rotunda from the 11th century that you can see on the 20 Polish złoty bill.

After exploring the town for a bit and relaxing in one of the lovely cafes there, you can walk across the Olza River to Cesky Tesin - the Czech side of the town. The train station is located around a 10-minute walk from the Olza River, but you can also see a bit of Cesky Tesin on the way. Although most historical sites are on the Polish side of the town, Cesky Tesin is a pleasant place for a stroll.

Train from Cesky Tesin to Prague From Cesky Tesin, you can take the train operated by Ceske Drahy (the national railway company of the Czech Republic) all the way to Prague. There are a few direct trains, but you can also travel with the convenient change in Ostrava.

The train trip from Cesky Tesin to Prague should take around 4-5 hours, depending on the train you take. The ticket costs around €20; you can buy it online at the Ceske Drahy website or the train station in Cesky Tesin.

This option of getting from Krakow to Prague is good for those who don’t want to spend long hours traveling and would like to break the journey somewhere along the way. As a bonus, you can see another interesting place along the way, a real gem of Central Europe. You don’t need to continue your journey right away; you might stay overnight in Cieszyn and enjoy two towns divided by the border and all their attractions to the fullest.

5. Krakow to Prague by Plane

Until recently, there were Krakow to Prague flights operated by Ryanair, but these were suspended for the winter season. Let’s hope they will return soon, as this was the fastest way of getting from Krakow to Prague. The flight time was only 1 hour and 5 minutes. The airfare from Krakow to Prague was usually around €30 (since Ryanair is a low-cost airline, you need to pay extra for priority boarding, checking in the bag, etc.).

Flying from Krakow to Prague  You can still fly from Krakow to Prague, but such a journey requires a change. The best option is to use LOT Polish Airlines , with a convenient change in Warsaw. Since you will have the whole trip on one ticket, the airline will rebook you for the next available flight in case of some delays.

There are a few daily flights from Krakow to Warsaw and Warsaw to Prague so that you can find the best connection for you. Even with the change in the Polish capital, the Krakow to Prague flight time is a bit over 3 hours; with getting to and from the airport and the security check, you can make the trip between centers of both cities in around six hours.

The one-way Krakow to Prague plane ticket price starts at €120 if you buy in advance. You can book your trip directly at the LOT Polish Airlines website.

Since both Krakow and Prague are popular destinations among low-cost airlines (Ryanair, Wizzair, EasyJet), you can try a combination of those when flying between the cities, with the change in one of the European airports. The Krakow to Prague airfare will be significantly lower then, even around €50, but in case of delays, you will need to buy a new ticket for your trip to Prague.

Airports in Krakow and Prague Krakow Airport is located some 15 km away from the center of the city. It is well-connected to the main station by train, with departures twice per hour and a journey time of only 17 minutes. A ticket for the airport train costs €4; you can purchase it online, at the train station, or on the train.

In Prague, the best way to get from the airport to the center is by bus, either directly to the central train station (a more expensive option) or to the bus stop Nadrazi Veleslavin, where you can change for the metro green line A.

6. Krakow to Prague by Car

If you enjoy the freedom of traveling by car, you can drive from Krakow to Prague. The journey should take at least six hours, but the fastest way goes through some paid roads, so you must remember to purchase the Czech vignette for using the motorways (in Poland, you pay directly at the toll gates on the highways).

Where to stop between Krakow and Prague You can also do a few detours and stop in some interesting places along the way, making your journey a fun Krakow to Prague road trip. There is plenty to see between these two cities, both in Poland and the Czech Republic, so you can even stretch your journey to a few days. Some of the best places to visit between Krakow to Prague are Auschwitz-Birkenau (the former Nazi Concentration Camp), Bielsko-Biała (a beautiful city known as “little Vienna”), Cieszyn (a charming town divided by the Polish-Czech border), Olomouc (another stunning city with the UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column), or Kutna Hora (also a UNESCO place, known for its historical center and the bone chapel). These are only a few suggestions where you can stop, but there are many more interesting places in the area.

Krakow to Prague by rental car Just a word of caution: you will be charged an extra fee when renting a car and returning it to another destination. If you can’t find a good offer for a Krakow to Prague rental car, extend your search to the airports, as those often have a better availability and selection.

7. Krakow to Prague by Private Transfer

A comfortable way of traveling from Krakow to Prague is by private transfer. After picking you up from your accommodation, the English-speaking driver will take you to Prague, directly to your requested place. You will be traveling in a comfortable car, but you can upgrade to the luxury option for an extra fee.

Krakow to Prague private transfer is not the cheapest way of getting around; you can expect to pay around €500 for the trip, but the whole journey should take less than six hours and be hassle-free.

For an extra fee, you can add sightseeing stops along the way. The most popular places you can visit are Auschwitz-Birkenau, the historical town Stramberk, Zbrasov Caves, Olomouc, and Kutna Hora.

8. Krakow to Prague by Car Sharing

A popular alternative to usual modes of transportation is carpooling. You can find drivers who travel the same route as you and join them on the trip. This way, you can save a bit on the travel costs and have a company to chat with during a long journey.

The most popular website to look for car-sharing rides is BlaBlaCar . You can browse through offers without registering, but you must be logged in to contact the driver. BlaBlaCar is a safe platform with a rating system and driver’s profile to learn more about the person you would be traveling with.

Before deciding on the ride, check the fine print, especially pick-up and drop-off points, as those can be away from the center, and you need to add the hassle of getting to and back from the place.

The price for a Krakow to Prague carpool ride varies, depending on the driver who sets it, but in general, you should expect to pay around €20-30 for the trip.

9. Krakow to Prague by Hitchhiking

Those who enjoy the thrill of unexpected travel and the joy of adventure can try hitchhiking from Krakow to Prague. You need to be warned, though, as this might be a challenging journey considering the distance of over 500 km between the cities. Moreover, both places are connected by a network of roads, not one direct motorway, so finding the ride all the way from Krakow to Prague will be rather difficult (but not impossible).

While the fastest way to get from Krakow to Prague is via Katowice, it’s not smart to hitchhike there as you might get stuck there. Instead, aim for Bielsko-Biała; from there, it’s a short drive across the border to the Czech Republic and Prague.

The best hitchhiking spot for your trip is near the Opatkowice bus stop in the southern part of the city. The best way to get there is by tram no 8, 19, 22, or 50 to the final stop, Borek Fałęcki, where you can change for the bus to Opatkowice stop. Once there, you can start your hitchhiking already at the bus stop. When you find the ride, tell the driver immediately that you want to go to Bielsko-Biała, as the road divides a few kilometers further.

10. Krakow to Prague by Bike

If you are looking for an active way to spend your holidays and want to see more than just Krakow and Prague, you can get between the two cities by bike. You will need around two weeks to cover the distance of approximately 650 km, but you will see so many amazing places along the way, and you will be able to get to know Central Europe in depth.

It’s up to you which places you decide to visit, but some real gems await you, including numerous charming towns, historical sites, and a few UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Just remember that parts of the Krakow to Prague bike trip go through hilly areas, so cycling can get a bit more demanding at some points.

Those who would like to go by bike from Krakow to Prague but don’t want to deal with planning and organizing the itinerary and all the practicalities can join the tour. There are a few Krakow to Prague bike tour options, but no matter which one you choose, you are in for unforgettable holidays in Central Europe.

11. Walking from Krakow to Prague

A more challenging (but still doable) way of getting from Krakow to Prague is on foot. The shortest distance between the cities is around 450 km, so you need about a month to cover this route.

If you decide to do that, there are many wonderful places to stop, do some sightseeing, and learn more about the region. There is no better way to get to know Central Europe, its culture, and its habits than exploring the area at a slow pace that walking provides.

12. Krakow to Prague by RV

If you are traveling with your motorhome, you can take your RV for a road trip from Krakow to Prague. Just keep in mind that camping in the wild is not allowed in the Czech Republic. In Poland, you can do it, but only in designated spots.

There is no need to worry, though, as there are plenty of campsites along the way from Krakow to Prague, where you can spend the night.

13. Krakow to Prague by Motorcycle

Another way of thrilling and independent travel from Krakow to Prague is by motorcycle. You can use fast motorways and get from one city to another smoothly and quickly.

But you can also choose less busy winding roads through small, charming towns and picturesque landscapes to enjoy your trip to the fullest. This is a somewhat underrated part of Europe, and you might be surprised how many unique places you will stumble across during your trip.

14. Krakow to Prague by Private Jet

The fastest (and the most expensive) way to get from Krakow to Prague is by private jet. Prices for chartering the plane for this journey start at around €7,500, but no doubt you would be able to enjoy a luxurious trip in style.

The overall travel time between the centers of the cities should be around 3-4 hours, beating every other mode of transportation on this route.

15. Krakow to Prague on Horseback

The least popular way of traveling these days is on horseback, giving you a feel of the old times and how traveling used to look back then. This is also how you can get from Krakow to Prague, although it will be a long and not very comfortable journey.

You need to plan at least seven days to get from Krakow to Prague on horseback, but the trip would take you through some beautiful, remote locations and picturesque landscapes of Central Europe.

Two comfortable EuroCity trains named Silesia & Cracovia and a EuroNight sleeper train named Chopin link Prague with Krakow, centre to centre in both directions.  There's also a privately-operated Leo Express train on certain days each week, due to become daily at some point.  The EuroCity trains have air-conditioning, power sockets, free WiFi & a bistro car serving drinks & snacks with draught beer on tap, with fares from €15.  The safe & cosy sleeper train saves a hotel bill, too.  The Leo Express train has air-con, power sockets, free WiFi, and complimentary wine, water & coffee in Business & Premium classes.  These trains also call at Oswiecim, more notorious by its German name, Auschwitz.  This page explains what these trains are like & how to buy tickets .

small bullet point

Train times 2024

Notes for timetable.

Check times for your specific date of travel at www.cd.cz or (for Leo Express) www.leoexpress.com as times may vary due to trackwork.

Oswiecim = Polish name for Auschwitz .  Regular local trains link Krakow & Oswiecim, with turn-up-and-go ticketing.

The sleeper train Chopin has a sleeping-car with 1, 2 & 3 bed compartments and on most dates a couchette car with 4 & 6 bunk compartments, see below .

The Leo Express train started running in 2018, it's still only running twice a week, but planned to go daily at some point.

Prague to Krakow is 474 km (295 miles) by train.

Option 1, by EuroCity trains Silesia or Cracovia

The Cracovia is a comfortable air-conditioned EuroCity train run jointly by national rail operators CD (Czech Railways) and PKP (Polish Railways), using Czech rolling stock.

The Silesia consists of 2nd class through coaches between Prague & Krakow attached to a Prague-Warsaw EuroCity train.

Eurail & Interrail passes are accepted on both these trains, a €3 seat reservation is necessary.  EuroCity is a generic term for good-quality air-conditioned express trains used by many European train operators.

How much does it cost ?

The full-price full-flex fare is around €55 in 2nd class, €83 in 1st class, bought from Czech Railways.

How to buy tickets

Book in either direction at the Czech Railways website www.cd.cz .

Change the Czech flag to the UK flag for English.  Booking usually opens 60 days before departure , although this shrinks to less than this for dates after the mid-December timetable change.  There is absolutely no need to book further ahead that this, you can usually find the cheapest fares even booking just weeks ahead and there will be places available even on the day.

What is the Silesia like?

In December 2022, the Prague-Warsaw EuroCity train Silesia got a new Prague-Krakow portion consisting of comfortable air-conditioned 2nd class through coaches.  You can choose a seat in the open-plan car (below left, see larger photo ), or in a classic 6-seat compartment (below right, see larger photo ).  There's no 1st class in the Prague-Krakow portion, if you insist on 1st class you'll have to switch cars.  A restaurant car is available between Prague & Bohumin, near the Polish border.

What is the Cracovia like ?

The Cracovia consists of modern air-conditioned Czech carriages, some open-plan (saloon) and some with classic 6-seat compartments, see the photos below.  All cars have toilets and power sockets for laptops & mobiles.  The 2nd class open-plan cars should also have free WiFi whilst the train is in the Czech Republic.  There's a bistro car serving tea, coffee, wine, draught beer and inexpensive hot dishes.  First class seats are arranged open-plan in half of the bistro car with the steward taking food & drink orders and serving them at your seat.  Seat reservation is compulsory.

1st class seats are all located in the bistro car on one side of the central kitchen.  These seats are for 1st class passengers only.  A steward takes food & drink orders from the menu and serves them at your seat.  You can reserve seats in this area if you buy a 1st class ticket, with no need to leave your seat or leave your luggage unattended to get fed - this alone makes the modest extra cost for 1st class worth it!

Bistro seating . On the other side of the kitchen in the other half of the bistro car is a small 12-seat area next to the serving counter.  This area has the same leather seats as in 1st class, but 2nd class passengers are free to sit in this section when consuming food & drink from the bistro.  It's effectively a restaurant car for 2nd class passengers with a free upgrade included!  Seats cannot be reserved in this section, the LED reservation panel above each seat may say Bistro misto = bistro seat.  In principle, you must return to your seat when you finish your food.

2nd class seats come in a choice of two types of car:  Open-plan cars (above left, see larger photo ), and classic 6-seat compartments cars (above right, see larger photo ).  I personally prefer the open-plan cars, but compartments can be fun if you're a family or small group.

Option 2, by EuroNight sleeper train Chopin

The EuroNight sleeper train Chopin is a safe & comfortable air-conditioned sleeper train run jointly by national rail operators CD (Czech Railways) and PKP (Polish Railways), using Czech rolling stock.  Named after the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin , it runs between Prague and Warsaw, calling at Krakow.  EuroNight is a generic term for good-quality air-conditioned overnight trains used by many European train operators.

It has a sleeper every day all year round, with 1, 2 & 3 bed compartments.  It also has a couchette car with 4 & 6 bunk compartments, but only at Christmas & New Year, Easter, and over the summer June-September.

Regular flexible price

Bought at the station in Prague, a basic Prague-Krakow 2nd class ticket costs around €55.

Bought at the station in Krakow, a basic Krakow-Prague 2nd class ticket costs around €70.  Don't ask me why it costs more in Poland!

You then need to add the supplement for a berth:  For a couchette, €11 in a 6-berth compartment or €15 in a 4-berth compartment.  For a bed in a standard sleeper €15 per bed in a 3-berth, €28 per bed in a 2-bed,  €51 for a single-bed sleeper all to yourself.  In a deluxe sleeper with shower & toilet, €36 per bed in a 2-berth or €79 for a single berth sleeper all to yourself.

Berths are sold individually, so you do not have to pay for sole occupancy if you are a solo traveller.  You can book one bed in a 3-bed sleeper and share with other civilised sleeper passengers of the same sex, which is much cheaper.

Option 1, book online at Czech Railways www.cd.cz

You can book online in either direction at the Czech Railways website www.cd.cz .  Change the Czech flag to the UK one for English.

Only one passenger name is needed to support your self-print ticket, even if that ticket is for two or more people.

What is the sleeping-car like?

Every night a direct sleeper train links Prague with Krakow & Warsaw.  There is one air-conditioned Czech sleeping-car en route to or from Warsaw, a Comfortline type built by Siemens in Germany in 2004-2005, with 9 standard compartments with washbasin & 3 deluxe compartments with en suite toilet & shower, see the photos below.  Inside the sleeping-car it's carpeted, air-conditioned, quiet and civilised.  Each compartment can be sold as a 1, 2 or 3 bed room.  There's crisp clean bedding, soap, towel, bottled water, free WiFi and a power socket for mobiles & laptops below the head-end of the bed.  In the morning a light breakfast is included with tea or coffee.  The compartments have a card-key locks like a hotel and there's a toilet & shower at the end of the corridor for sleeper passengers in the standard compartments.  Sleeper berths are sold individually, you can book one bed in a 2 or 3 berth and share with another passenger of the same gender.  Compartments are single-sex unless your party occupies the whole compartment.  An excellent way to travel.

Beds are 190cm x 75cm (approx 6'3" x 2'6"), but pillow or toes can project into a 2.5cm (1") gap either end between bed & wall, so no problem for anyone up to 6'5".

Comfortline sleeper layout .  All compartments can be sold as a single, double or triple.  Last digit of berth number 1 or 2 = lower berth, 3 or 4 = middle berth, 5 or 6 upper berth.  Adjacent compartments with berths with the same first digit have an inter-connecting door which can be opened if your party occupies both compartments.  Click the image for larger version.

What is the couchette car like?

The Prague-Krakow overnight train usually conveys a comfortable Czech car with 9 compartments, each of which can be used as 4-berth or 6-berth.  In previous years the couchette car has run every day all year round, but in 2024 it's only attached over Christmas & New Year, Easter, and over the summer June-September.

Pictured below right is a 6-berth compartment with middle and upper berths visible, the bottom bunks almost out of shot.  Clean sheets and a pillow are provided, the doors have a normal lock and security lock or chain.  Toilets and washrooms at the end of the corridor.  Couchette compartments are not segregated by gender, as you do not normally get fully undressed.  See how couchettes are numbered .  Larger couchette photo .

Travel tips

Seat or berth on the overnight train?

Always book a couchette or sleeper on the overnight train.  It's a false economy to sit up all night slumped in a seat, for both comfort and security.

Couchette or sleeper on the overnight train?

For the modest amount extra, the additional comfort and privacy of a carpeted 1, 2 or 3-berth sleeper with washbasin is well worth it over a more basic 4 or 6 bunk couchette.

But if the sleeper is full, don't be afraid to book a couchette, it's a nice smart Czech car and you'll sleep just as well as in a sleeper.  In couchettes, I recommend paying the small amount extra for a bunk in a 4-berth compartment rather than a bunk in a 6-berth as this gets you a lot more space per person.

If travelling solo, a bed in a 2-bed sleeper is the recommended option if you don't want to fork out a lot more money for single occupancy, nice through that would be.  You might be lucky and get a compartment to yourself, otherwise you'll share with another civilised passenger just like you, of the same sex.

If you're a family of four, the decision between two 2-berth compartments in the sleeper or one 4-bunk couchette compartment is marginal.  Couchettes are cheaper and great fun for a family group, with the benefit of all being together not split into two compartments (there are no inter-compartment doors on this type of sleeper).  But sleepers are comfier and don't cost that much more on this route.  I think on balance I'd go for the sleeper unless I was watching every penny.

Deluxe or regular sleeper?

OK, so it's nice having your own shower & toilet, but remember there are only 3 deluxe sleeper compartments on the entire train.  Deluxe sleepers are virtually identical to standard sleepers in every respect, same beds, same decor, same everything, they just have a compact shower/toilet unit instead of a washstand.  And there's a shower at the end of the corridor for passengers in the regular sleepers.  So don't obsess about having a deluxe, standard sleepers are almost as good!

Berth numbering

This often confuses people!  They get berths 21 & 25 and think that they aren't in the same 2-berth sleeper compartment.  Of course they are!  See how sleepers & couchettes are numbered .

Finding & boarding your train

As with virtually all European trains, there's no check-in.  Just stroll into the station, find your train and get on, any time before it leaves.  And yes, Prague and Krakow stations are both safe at night, with plenty of people around.  Prague Hlavni station guide .  Krakow Glowny station guide .

Dinner before you board?

There's no catering car, so eat before you board.

In Prague, consider the remarkable Restaurant Zvonice ( www.restaurantzvonice.cz ), on the 7th & 8th floors of a historic gate-tower housing a bell that dates from 1518.  It's a 6 minute 450m walk from the station, see a walking map .  Don't worry, there's a lift!  It's open until late so ideal if you're catching a sleeper.  Expensive by Czech standards, but not by western standards, food & wine are great.

Going to Auschwitz?

The EuroCity train Cracovia and EuroNight sleeper train Chopin used to call at Oswiecim, the modern name for Auschwitz, although currently the trains are all diverted via Katowice due to track upgrading so they won't.  However, hourly local trains link Krakow with Oswiecim, buy a ticket at the station, see more information here .  Oswiecim station is just 10 minutes walk from the original Auschwitz I camp, and 30 minutes walk from the later purpose-built camp called Auschwitz-Birkenau II just outside the town.

See general advice for European train travel .

Suggested hotels in Prague old town or near the station .  If your budget will stretch, consider the luxurious Hotel Carlo IV , 3 minutes stroll from the station, 10 minutes walk from all the city sights.  Thanks to Czech prices, it's not as expensive as such a hotel would be further west!

Option 3, by Leo Express train

Leo Express is a private open-access operator which operates a comfortable Prague-Krakow train twice a week.  It's a modern air-conditioned electric unit with 3 classes, Economy, Business & Premium.  It started running in July 2018, initially twice a week, then 4 days a week then back down to twice a week following the pandemic.  It's expected to become daily eventually.

What is the Leo Express train like ?  Which class to choose?

The train is modern and air-conditioned with 3 or 4 classes, see www.leoexpress.com for more details and photos, and see the video .

Economy = comfy seats, power sockets & free WiFi.  Food and drink can be bought from the refreshment trolley.  Most of the train consists of economy class.  Seats are arranged 2+2 across the car width, like 2nd class on regular trains.

Economy Plus = same leather seats as Business class with the same business class food & drink included, but less legroom and no partition between it and the rest of economy, so not as quiet as Business class.  Economy Plus is new, being progressively fitted to trains during 2020,

Business = leather seats with extra leg-room, power sockets & free WiFi, complimentary water & coffee.  Business class consists of two-thirds of a car at one end of the train.  Seats are arranged 2+1 across the car width, like 1st class on regular trains.  On journeys over 50 minutes, 1 alcoholic drink is included in the fare,

Premium = there are just 6 premium class seats located at one end of the train.  Excellent reclining leather seats with leg-rests so you can put your feet up, power sockets & free WiFi, complimentary water & coffee.  On journeys over 50 minutes, 2 alcoholic drinks and a simple meal are included in the fare.

The Man in Seat 61 says, "In my opinion, the Leo Express premium seats are the most comfortable train seat in Europe.  You sink into that leather, with power-recline to 40 degrees and a legrest. Treat yourself to premium class if you get the chance!"

All good! But sandwiches for breakfast need to be warm!!!!! Not cold!!! You do not want anything cold in your stomach in the morning!… think about it!

The flight was very bad, the food and the staff was very rude. My last time with them

LOT airlines wasn't the best. They had trouble with boarding and they didn't have my information on file the right way. They change last minute details without us knowing and everything was a HOT MESS. Lot airlines also lost my baggae which was the carseat and haven't responded to any of my emails.

Lost my suitcase. And communication was poor. No offers of compensation for over 24 hour delay of bag

The worst experience ever! They never told me I had to transfer my ticket at the ticket transfer counter. They moved me to a flight leaving the next day, which was also heavily delayed. The staff at the airport were rude and not helpfull. I'll never travel with this airline again and will not recommend it

Garbage airline at a premium price. Both ways was unable to purchase seats before checking. Called, messaged on Facebook, and emailed. All three times staff said I could, and gave me form responses on how to, despite providing screenshots/explaining beforehand showing I couldn't. At check-in both times they sat me and my wife separately, despite booking together. Both legs the USB port in my entertainment system was broken. Food is atrocious. Seats are old and uncomfortable, and struggle to adjust. Toilets were like portapotties at a concert.

Would have liked to have Wi-Fi on the longer flight (nyc-Warsaw)

My flight was cancelled and I went through hell to get it fixed, with no help from the website I booked it on. My reservation was cancelled AGAIN by the site I booked on without my knowledge a week later. The flight itself that I finally got on was awful. Drunk man belligerent the entire flight, I don't understand how he was allowed on the flight.

Lot still has not refunded me after they cancelled my flight to India!! Kayak had been awful at getting me this refund too. Will NEVER be using kayak or LOT again.

Tv screen not working. Food in business class was cold & not available

I got denied boarding bevause they said they "ran out of seats on a plane"

Boarding process makes no sense for priority boarding or not since everyone gets crammed in a bus and everyone gets out without any difference.

Letting people wait outside for boarding in the rain and almost 0 degrees for a high temperature destination is very customer unfriendly

Em relação a Ryanair, ter de ir ao check-in só para carimbar o cartão de embarque não foi muito fácil, são muito demorados, e atrasam a passagem do controlo de passaporte... E cheguei com 2 horas de antecedência

Cheap flights as you expect with Ryanair. I would take cheaper flights over entertainment and comfort for short haul travel. Main issue is usually delays at airports. In this case we landed roughly 2hr30 later than planned due to earlier delays with the plane. Not the worst I imagine

O voo atrasou um bom bocado A tripulação não era comunicativa,não fez vendas... Não abordava os passageiros... A 1°vez que me acontece tal coisa 🤷‍♀️

Great flight and reminded that the logistics completely Astoria. No real story about victors, m

it s a budget flight, crew was doing their job well, it was on time.

You get what you pay for with RyanAir. This was a €60 round trip from Stockholm and every piece of it was just excruciating, from the plane being delayed by more than an hour, to having to stand out on the tarmac in the darkness at 3C and wind to wait for the plane to disembark its previous flight (why they do this is just cruel), to the crew keeping the lights on the entire flight despite it being so late so they could walk through the aisles and try to sell things. I always say “never again!” after flying RyanAir, but somehow end up getting lured by the prices…

Largas colas para el check-in, por seguridad, sin explicación, el equipaje de mano pequeño tuvo que pasar a bodega,
