3 of the Best Places to Stay in Santa Barbara Right Now

travel and leisure santa barbara

Travel may be changing, but that doesn't mean you need to forgo taking an adventure forever. Check out three distinct hotels in Santa Barbara that are waiting for you to come and have a happy and healthy vacation well spent.

Ritz-Carlton Bacara

Looking for an ocean-front hotel where you can truly get away from it all in style? The Ritz- Carlton Bacara is the place for you. The hotel sits on 78 pristine acres of land right on the Pacific Ocean and is the place to come to escape and find tranquility. The property comes with two stunning beaches, three separate infinity-edge pools, and a 42,000-sq-foot spa.

Beyond its beachfront access and incredible spa, the hotel also comes with plenty of other perks like tasty signature meals at its very own steakhouse, Angel Oak, which also has a 12,000-bottle wine collection. And, of course, we can't forget the rooms. The hotel has several options to choose from, but if you can, go for an ocean-view room or suite to get in on that Santa Barbara good life.

Around the area: The Ritz-Carlton Bacara sits a bit outside of town, but maintains easy access to the area vineyards, restaurants, shops, and attractions, and even sits close to Dune Coffee , one of Santa Barbara's best little secrets. Dune coffee is a Santa Barbara born and bred company that now brings customers a taste of beans from all over the globe. It has three locations around the city, meaning you can always find a cup for under $3.

Hotel price: Rooms starting at $399/night

The Hotel Californian

The Hotel Californian opened its doors in 2017, ushering in a new era of luxury in town. Sophisticated, classic, and totally refined are all the right adjectives to use to describe the Hotel Californian. With its superb location near the town's train station, it makes for an easy getaway from Los Angeles.

The 121-room hotel is a favored destination for international visitors, A-listers coming up from Hollywood, and travel lovers alike. And really, it's no surprise why. The gorgeous space, designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard, is bright, airy, and everything you're looking for in a quick escape from the city. But the Moroccan meets Spanish lobby interior is just the beginning. Each of the hotel's luxurious guest rooms provides a unique experience for visitors. The hotel also comes with its own rooftop pool and expansive Pacific views. It's ultra-glam and ultra-cool, and a truly perfect place for a dip.

Around the area: While here, go visit the hotel's neighbors, Bettina , for a delicious slice of pizza. The upscale pizza joint features fresh, local ingredients and is conveniently located near the beach so you can take your pie and sit right in the sand.

Hotel price: Starting at $499/night

San Ysidro Ranch

San Ysidro Ranch is an oasis for all who walk into its 500-acre property. With sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands, it's a place where everyone can find a little piece of vacation bliss.

It's no wonder this place has been named to Travel+Leisure's World's Best awards year after year and always makes the list for most romantic spots in the world. Entering the ranch is like walking into a fairytale book, where every corner is touched with magic. And, like the Ritz, San Ysidro Ranch is located just minutes from town but feels an entire world away.

The hotel is the ideal spot for couples or families thanks to its 41 Intimate cottages, all surrounded by lush plant life. Inside the cabins, guests will find cozy but chic furnishings that will make you feel right at home. Who knows, you may even be able to snag the same cottage president Kennedy and Jackie Onasis used on their honeymoon.

And, the hotel isn't just a ranch in name. Originally part of a land grant, the ranch was fully deeded as a sanctuary for Franciscan friars in the late 1700s. Now, the hotel is still surrounded by 400-year-old olive trees, fields of fragrant flowers, and a chef's garden used to feed guests.

Around the area: Ask anyone who's ever been to Santa Barbara before where you should eat, and nine times out of ten they'll say to come to Lucky's . The menu here is a foodie delight, offering decadent treats to diners like 28 oz porterhouse steaks and Ahi tuna fresh from the ocean.

Hotel price: Starting at $1,000/night

  • # 17 in Best Places to Visit in California for 2024

In the early 20th century when Flying "A" Studios opened its doors, Santa Barbara was slated to become the epicenter of America's movie-making industry. But the movie stars moved south to  Los Angeles , and today's Santa Barbarans wouldn't want it any other way. On the "American Riviera," Santa Barbara aspires for a casual, yet fashionable elegance. Just take a look at the well-dressed pedestrians on  State Street  to comprehend the city's understated indulgence. Oenophiles will particularly appreciate Santa Barbara's proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley, which is speckled with vineyards. Explore the local wine scene with one of Santa Barbara's best wine tours .

Contributing Editor Tracey Minkin Indulges in a Weekend of Mediterranean Revival and Wine in Santa Barbara

It's no wonder the California coastal town is nicknamed the American Riviera.

I hope the genius who coined Santa Barbara "The American Riviera" gets a nickel every time I call this most beautiful of California coastal cities by its tagline. Because they were right; Santa Barbara is a gorgeous testimony to the mesmerizing power of Mediterranean (Revival) architecture.

Some palm trees and the cobalt blue Pacific Ocean don't hurt, either. And in doing the OG Riviera one better, Santa Barbara is one of the most fun, high-quality wine towns there is. I bet Gerald and Sara Murphy could have used a good beach taco and pour of natural wine. Here's my favorite way to drink in the local vintages and the views in glorious Santa Barbara.

But First, Wine

bibi ji restaurant in santa barbara

The buzzy nexus of pours from this exciting wine region is the Funk Zone, formerly home to industrial buildings on the wrong side of the tracks (literally) but now home to more than 15 tasting rooms in a 10-block radius. Start with the Riesling at Municipal Winemakers while snagging some vitamin D the natural way on their outdoor patio. Then pay homage to circa-1962 Santa Barbara Winery with a glass on their outdoor patio and a cheese plate from Pierre Lafond Market & Deli .

And Then, Food (and More Wine)

Power up with local Dart Coffee Co . brewing and bready wonders at Helena Avenue Bakery. Head to the Santa Barbara Public Market for Corazón Cocina’s superb spread of ceviches and tacos. There’s not just fertile wine country out there—there’s farmland out there. So make the most of it with farm-forward restaurants like Satellite , a wine bar and vegetarian restaurant in the heart of downtown, and Bibi Ji for contemporary Indian, which pairs perfectly with the incredibly deep and expansive wine list updated weekly by owners Alejandro Medina and James Beard award-winner Rajat Parr.

Historic Mini-Hops

the entry arch of the santa barbara county, ca, courthouse

It’s easy to get swoony and captivated by the overall beauty of the city’s wealth of historic Mediterranean Revival architecture; get the real story and take in the myriad of examples with the experts at Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara, which runs private walking tours by appointment for groups up to 10 people (arrangements should be made at least two weeks in advance and are subject to docent availability). To schedule a tour, email [email protected] or call 805-965-6307.

Hotel Californian designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard wasn’t shy about sharing his favorite cultural hideout in the city: the Mission Museum at Old Mission Santa Barbara. “It’s like stepping back in time,” he says of the “Queen of the Missions” founded by Spanish Franciscans in 1786 (the current buildings date to the early 19 th century). “You really feel the spirit and history of old Santa Barbara,” he says.

For a new Santa Barbara vision, check out local-born architect (and author ) Jeff Shelton's buildings that reimagine Spanish Colonial Revival wildly and compellingly. The Jeff Shelton Architecture Tour is a self-guided walk among eight of his buildings in the downtown area ( download the map here ).

The Shopping Edit

showroom at raoul textiles, santa barbara

First stop: Santa Barbara design legend Raoul Textiles. The curated rooms of this workshop/showroom hybrid are IRL look books for the art of California living in a Mediterranean Revival world. Keep an eye peeled for this season's new wool-linen stripes, plus the workshop's latest Engle & Deutch armchair, based on a 19 th -century French side chair (open by appointment Monday-Friday).

heather taylor home at montecito country mart

You won’t mind the drive, because it ends up at Montecito Country Mart , and you’ll want the car for your shopping brags. Look for favorites like Clare V. and Poppy Store, and new arrivals Doen and a pop-up shop with Heather Taylor Home . Leave time for pizza (and more wine?) at Bettina.

Sleep in Splendor

hotel californian, santa barbara

Who better than Martyn Lawrence Bullard to envision a new vision for the American Riviera? That’s the magic spun at Hotel Californian , which blends Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with Moorish-influenced interiors (both California design crazes in the 1920s and one of the designer’s trademark gestures). Here, black and white geometries play with emerald and saffron pops of color, Moroccan tiles lead down winding paseos, and an oasis of a rooftop pool offers freshwaters and sweeping views over rooftops to the Pacific. The latest: The Society: State & Mason is the hotel’s new, intimate wine tasting room that’s going to be offering classes, winemaker dinners, special events, and more in addition to tastings.

palihouse santa barbara

Meanwhile, the 2021 arrival of Palihouse Santa Barbara showcased designer and hotel impresario Avi Brosh’s guestroom and suite revival of the Santa Barbara School of the Arts’ circa-1920 landmark building in the historic downtown Presidio neighborhood. It’s all pops of color playing amid the Spanish Colonial Revival, and it’s a stunner.

The Essential Excursion

lotusland, montecito

One cannot— cannot —come to this part of the world and not journey to Montecito to pay homage to the legendary Madame Ganna Walska’s Lotusland , her former home and extraordinary gardens that feature remarkable collections of dry garden plants, including some of the most famous cycads in the world. Mark off a half-day for this fabulous pilgrimage—you’ll be so glad you did.

Santa Barbara Is a Perfect Dupe for the Spanish Riviera

Welcome to  Two Days Away , our series featuring weekend-long itineraries within a five-hour drive of your city—because sometimes we all just need a little adventure fix. Take the best parts of LA—its beaches , mountains , beautiful weather, food , and culture —and remove the freeways, long commutes, and overpopulation, and you get Santa Barbara. This organic, small-scale replica of its sister city has achieved the delicate balance of having all the conveniences of a metropolis whilst maintaining serene natural beauty and a small town charm . It’s where delicate sea conservation areas meet rugged mountains, and contemporary art museums are minutes away from Chumash pictographs.

Once lined with tall multi-story homes, hotels, theaters, and shops, the booming town of Santa Barbara gained fame after the 1925 earthquake that demolished the city. But in the wake of travesty, Santa Barbara had a rebirth. Inspiration was taken from the Old Mission that overlooks the town, building in a Spanish colonial revival style. The city hosts paseos, promenades, and arcadas stocked with restaurants, shops, and galleries.

The natural and urban settings of the city make for an active leisure culture usually found in the Spanish Riviera but emulated here, giving the city its character. Now in its golden age, Santa Barbara attracts Hollywood celebrities , nature enthusiasts, artists, students, and chefs. Approximately 95 miles from LA, with over 300 days of sunshine, visit between late spring to summer for the best beach experience. Whether your vacation love language is food, adventure, history, or relaxation , there is something for everyone.

Travel time:

4 hours from San Diego.

If you don’t do anything else: Get up close and personal with the natural beauty of Santa Barbara

The harborside hosts city tours , boat rentals , and kayaking , the latter of which you can opt for a solo or guided adventure. Regardless you are bound to encounter sea lions barking from the buoys as fish swim right under you and seabirds fill the sky. For some time on land, bring your own bike or rent one right off the wharf at Wheel Fun Rentals ; they have the largest bike rental selection in California. Go for a leisurely ride down the boardwalk for a stunning view of the shore. The city has also recently established Santa Barbara BCycle , an electric bike share program that makes it easy to get around town.

Head for the hills on Cold Spring Loop , a moderate, two hour hike which rewards you with natural waterfalls and breathtaking panoramic views of the city. For a less strenuous experience, book a reserved walk at The Santa Barbara Botanical Garden . Organized in eleven unique sections, this space is dedicated to wild plants from across California. If you have some extra time, explore the 230-acre Ellwood Mesa Sperling Preserve which is a 20 minute drive from the city, attracting hikers, horseback riders, and 100,000 Monarch butterflies every fall. Make sure to see the often missed 78-acre eucalyptus grove on the north side of the preserve. For a trip back in time, visit the Chumash Painted Cave Historic State Park to admire the conservation of 400 year old rock art and to learn more about the local area's past Native American civilizations.

Fill your days:

Arts and culture in santa barbara, wellness in santa barbara, eat, drink, and sleep:, restaurants and bars in santa barbara.

Luckily in Santa Barbara, organic, fresh, and farm to table is the norm. The Daisy hosts a menu of seasonal California produce with the flavors of the Levant. Order the olives and hummus, bánh mi, and chicken salad for an unforgettable brunch under the sun. Located near the beach, Helena Avenue Bakery has a packed and flavorful breakfast taco as big as your plate, but make sure to try their soft fresh bread in either avocado toast or a breakfast sandwich. There is seating inside and out, and to go service for those looking to eat by the shore with their feet in the sand.

The Lark has an encyclopedia of wine to choose from including the contemporary orange wine to classic aged reds from Bordeaux. This restaurant is a favorite amongst the casual and culinary elite including the James Beard Foundation, who recently held a private event after the restaurant celebrated its ten year anniversary. Don’t miss the famous cornbread, seasonal apps, rib-eye, and salads. Need bottles of wine to go? Satellite offers many varieties of wine to supplement your sommelier ambitions. Find classics and obscure small batch producers from California and beyond.

A Snob’s Guide to the Long Weekend

Are you around? For true summertime flex, the answer should always be no.

weekend trips

There are 15 weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In between the obligatory Grecian reverie and the bucket list tour of Egypt, America’s sprawling back yard becomes quite attractive for a three-day getaway. So get out of here!

For Hiking: Sedona

ambiente resort sedona arizona lounge area

For Sailing: Nantucket

white elephant nantucket pool

Just in time for its 100th birthday this year, the White Elephant , Nantucket’s harborfront grande dame, has unveiled a full-body makeover. Now it is modern coastal chic incarnate, its 54 rooms and 11 cottages all airy and filled with light, furnished with rattan and wicker in a serene palette of blue and green. With direct flights from New York, Boston, and DC, Nantucket—and the promise of an idyllic New England itinerary that includes sailing, golf, afternoons at Jetties Beach, and ice cream at the Juice Bar—is as easy to get to as ever. If you have time, consider a few days in the Massachusetts capital, too, for a cultural bookend. The Boston Athenaeum has a very apropos exhibition on view called “Oceanic New England.” Plus, you’ll get bragging rights for being first to stay in the brand new Raffles, which opens this summer.

For Food & Wine: Santa Barbara

san ysidro ranch

The intoxicating scent of orange blossom greets you when you arrive at San Ysidro Ranch , the impeccably landscaped floral elysium nestled in the tony enclave of Montecito. Just 38 uniquely designed cottages are sprinkled across 550 acres of land that brims with lavender, Meyer lemons, roses (for which they use Oprah’s guy), jasmine, and wisteria. It’s no wonder the place has been an A-list refuge for 130 years: Churchill wrote here, JFK and Jackie honeymooned here, and, more recently, a Kardashian and a world famous pop star were here on the same weekend and no one was the wiser. The devastating mudslides of 2018 destroyed half of the property, but it was all built back within 15 months. Even the wine cellar, which lost its entire 13,000-bottle collection of Grand Cru Burgundys and rare Napa cabs, was swiftly restocked with, among other delights, every vintage of Petrus since 1945. A bottle of the ’45 ($39,000) should go nicely with the Steak Diane flambéed tableside at the restaurant. Just saying.

WISH LIST: San Ysidro Ranch also has an impressive collection of ultrarare spirits, found nowhere else in North America. Spring for the $40,000 VIP package and you'll get tastings of the stuff (which costs $5,000 an ounce), plus 3 nights in Jackie and JFK's two-bedroom cottage.

For Farm Life: Hudson Valley

wildflower farms hudson valley auberge resorts

Consider Wildflower Farms , an Auberge property just 90 minutes from Manhattan, the bucolic sister of the preppier Mayflower Inn in Connecticut. With its sprawling 140 acres, there’s a chance you’ll find yourself wandering the trails without running into too many other weekenders fleeing the city. But peace and quiet aren’t the only things available at Wildflower. Groups can congregate for drinks by the roaring fireplace on the patio, or at the working farm’s chicken coops in the morning to grab eggs that the kitchen at Clay, the on-site restaurant, will cook to order. (The chickens are great for Instagram, but don’t skip the cinnamon roll.) And if tuning out entirely isn’t your speed, such activities as foraging, beekeeping, flower collecting, and focaccia baking are all available to bolster the gentleman farmer vibe.

Visit Santa Barbara is set for the upcoming summer season with wellness marketing

travel and leisure santa barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – With the summer tourist season essentially starting this month on Memorial Day weekend, Visit Santa Barbara is giving its members some insights on marketing plans.

An annual report taking place at the Rosewood Miramar is in line with National Travel and Tourism Week and California Tourism Month.

Visit Santa Barbara said Santa Barbara South Coast tourism brings in $2.24 billion, including $82.9 million in yearly tax revenue. The information comes from Future Partners, a tourism market research firm. The tourism industry is also a major employer with more than 15,000 jobs.

This year, the presentation will focus on Santa Barbara County as a wellness destination.

Featured speakers included Daniel Pozas and Meredith Markworth-Pollack, owners of PALMA Colectiva; Adrienne Smith, owner of Power of Your Om; Janis Clapoff, general manager of El Encanto, A Belmond Hotel, Santa Barbara; and Jane Chapman, founder of The Communal Table Santa Barbara.

The discussion was moderated by Travel Zoo Senior Editor Gabe Saglie.

The audience learned a wellness  vacation is becoming not just trendy but common for those who are escaping where they live and what they do.

When looking at so many healthy options in the greater Santa Barbara area, Saglie said, "so all of a sudden, Santa Barbara has an opportunity to cater to,  whatever that might need to you or to me or somebody else, but to personalize it and to cater to this idea that you can leave here feeling better than when you arrive."

Many business specializing in wellness services are on the Central Coast and collaborating.

Jane Chapman is the Communal Table founder where dinners and conversations are curated together.  "I think we do attract and very special community that lives here year round and also attracts a very special person that want to visit.  I think because of our natural environment, our values, really taking pride and ownership in this place."

A travel experience with wellness options can be uniquely created in and around Santa Barbara bringing food and the local lifestyle together.

Saglie said,  "this idea that we are traveling so that we can, return to our realities, feeling better, maybe having done something better while we were away.   Just elevating the experience across the board but  certainly pulling ourselves  into that mix makes it a priority."

Packing up some of the experiences for the next strp is also a goal. Chapman said,  "my hope is when  you experience that here in this magical place, you'll be inspired to go home and care for your place the same way."

Having unique experiences creates memories and the tourism industry says that is essential now with so much competition for the travelers time in what's still a post pandemic travel economy.

Visit Santa Barbara CEO Kathy Janega-Dykes said, "people were flocking to Santa Barbara after world had not yet opened up. And then, you know, two summers ago, we saw many of our customers start traveling to to Europe, and they're continuing to do so to Asia. But I think it's really important for us just to remain vigilant."

New indicators for the summer are also starting to ben encouraging in a year when hotel bed taxes have been trailing the projections.

Janega-Dykes said,   "hotels are reporting they are seeing more reservations on the books than they saw last year."

The sunshine, wellness and culinary attractiveness could be part of the reason, compared to other choices. Saglie said,   "this idea that I want to explore, something that's going to make me more mindful, more aware of myself, of my neighbor, of my community, and I think we see that very much alive and well every day in Santa Barbara. "

Some of the special services are also shared internally. El Encanto General Manager Janis Clapoff said,   "we do a complimentary sound bathing for the community, our employees and their families once a month in the summer."
