Azerbaijan Tours & Vacations
Think Azerbaijan only holds appeal for travelers looking to tick off every country on the map? Think again.
Imagine an enigmatic country squeezed in between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, scattered with small fishing towns and remote mountain villages far from the tourist trail. Envisage the capital Baku and picture Europe meeting Asia with a Gulf States flair – a brash cosmopolitan metropolis flaunting the latest in futuristic architecture sitting alongside ancient mosques, walled cities and old-world Russian opulence. Think how bemused your friends will be upon hearing of your latest holiday choice. Fascinating, austere and intriguing by turns, this back-of-beyond nation won’t fail to charm and perplex.

Best time to visit azerbaijan.
April through to June is the best time to visit Azerbaijan, when the temperatures are warm, the flowers are out, and skies at their clearest. September and October are also good temperature-wise, though the countryside isn’t as scenic. The heat and humidity can be oppressive in Baku during the summer months of June, July and August, and from November to March temperatures can fall below 32 F.
Geography and environment
Azerbaijan is a mountainous country on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Over half of the country’s landscape consists of ridges, crests and foothills, while the remainder is characterized by lowland plateaus and plains traversed by rivers.
Top 5 iconic sights in Azerbaijan
1. the walled city of old baku.
Constructed sometime in the 12th century, this walled fortress was granted UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2000. A bustling labyrinth of alleyways, old buildings and boutique hotels, where the locals still live and go about their day, it retains the quintessential elements of a medieval town. It’s one of the few World Heritage sights in which you can actually bed down for a night.
2. Shirvanshah’s Palace
This ornate sandstone palatial complex received World Heritage status at the same time as the Walled City (in which it’s located). Largely destroyed by a bombardment, courtesy of the Russian Navy in the 18th century, the Palace has since been meticulously restored and is clearly visible from the sea and the city’s surrounding heights.
3. Maiden's Tower
Another World Heritage-listed sight inside the Walled City, Qiz Qalasi – translated as the Maiden’s or Virgin’s Tower – is one of Azerbaijan’s foremost architectural accomplishments and recognizable emblems. Standing 29 metres high and cylindrical in design, the history of this spiralling and mystifying structure remains a point of debate between historians, while its top offers 360-degree views of surrounding Baku Bay and the town’s alleys and minarets.
4. Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape
The ancient carvings and petroglyphs of the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, less than 70 km from Baku, provide a rich and fascinating insight into how life was for people in the area over 40,000 years ago. More than 6,000 depictions of flora, fauna and people engaged in hunting and fishing activities reveal both cultural continuity between prehistoric and medieval times, and seismic geographical change. The site received UNESCO listing in 2007.
5. The Khan’s Palace
Currently on the tentative list of sights seeking World Heritage listing, the former summer residential palace of Shaki Khans is an ornately tiled and patterned two-story structure built in 1797. Renowned for its exquisite stained-glass windows, murals and frescos, the palace’s beauty is only enhanced by verdant natural surroundings.

Is tipping customary in Azerbaijan?
In established restaurants, bars, hotels and taxis, a 5-10% service charge is usually added to the bill - though feel free to tip more than this for exceptional service. At restaurants where a service charge isn’t included, 10% is the acceptable gratuity. Although tipping at other places isn't mandatory it will be well received, and setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is also a good idea.
What is the internet access like in Azerbaijan?
Internet cafes with reliable and fast connections can easily be found in all of Azerbaijan’s major cities and towns.
Can I use my cell phone while in Azerbaijan?
Cell phone coverage is extensive throughout the capital and major cities, but pretty much non-existent in the remote mountainous parts of the country. Roaming agreements are in place with most international cellular companies.
What are the toilets like in Azerbaijan?
Clean and flushable Western-style toilets are generally the go at established tourist attractions across the country, though one should be prepared for some pretty ordinary squat/pit toilets elsewhere. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as these aren’t always at hand.
What will it cost for a...?
1.5 litre bottle of water = .60 AZN Bottle of local beer = 2.5 AZN Meal at an inexpensive restaurant = 8 AZN Meal at a mid-range restaurant = 40 AZN
Can I drink the water in Azerbaijan?
Tap water isn't safe to drink in Azerbaijan. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, bring water purification tablets or ask your leader where filtered water can be found.
Are credit cards accepted widely in Azerbaijan?
Some major credit cards will be accepted at some high-end restaurants and hotels, but it's best not to rely on these.
What is ATM access like in Azerbaijan?
ATMs are prevalent in Baku and other major towns, though won’t necessarily be internationally connected or reliable. Be sure to have other payment methods when visiting the country.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?
Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Is Azerbaijan Worth Visiting?
- Azerbaijan is full of contrasts , with nine climate zones stretching across the country. Snow-capped Caucasian Mountains border hot, dry deserts while sun-soaked meadows merge with Caspian Sea coasts. But Azerbaijan’s contrasts go beyond nature: cutting-edge architecture straddles caravanserais laden with secrets, while Soviet designs blend with Islamic architecture in a land that never ceases to amaze.
- Azerbaijan is the Land of Fire a nickname it has known since antiquity. It is home to some of the world’s most enviable gas and oil fields, nearly half of the world’s mud volcanoes, Ateshgah Zoroastrian Fire Temple and the natural, eternally burning flames of Yanar Dag (Burning Mountain).
- Azerbaijan is affordable , a land where thrifty travelers can find feasible options for extensive exploration. With delectable yet cheap food and cozy budget hotels and guesthouses, Azerbaijan offers options galore for the economical tourist.
- Azerbaijan blends the best of East and West as it sits at the juxtaposition of numerous civilizations. The old Silk Road atmosphere is still palpable among the merchants who proffer oriental spices in local bazaars, at the cozy tea houses hidden in the shade of glass office buildings and in the medieval Icheri Sheher (Inner City) guarded by forlorn Soviet structures .
Your Dream Vacation
Taste the arid winds of the Caucasian semi-desert, pray in the ancient temple of fire, stroll the corridor of oriental palaces and rest in the shadow of enduring caravanserais. Let Azerbaijan bewitch you with its delicious pilaf, tea served in delicate pear-shaped glasses and bustling bazaars. Craft your tour around the land’s fine-tuned artistic traditions, intricate petroglyphs or bubbling mud volcanoes.
Our Azerbaijan travel packages are as diverse as the clients we serve. Whether you are into history, outdoor adventures or cultural pursuits, chances are we have a tour that perfectly suits your interests. Options include everything from day trips to Azerbaijan’s major sites and attractions to extensive, multi-country expeditions. We are also happy to design a personalized Azerbaijan travel itinerary tailored to your specific needs and passions. Just drop us a message and get one step closer to your dream vacation!
Visa Matters
In recent years, Azerbaijan’s visa policies have gradually become more relaxed. Currently, citizens of over 90 countries including Australia, EU members, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, UAE and the U.S. can apply for an e-visa which is issued within 3 days. Passport holders of another 12 countries, including China, Japan, Israel, and South Korea, can get a visa upon arrival, while citizens of 10 countries, including Russia, can enter Azerbaijan visa-free. Azerbaijan is open for tourism, and getting there has never been easier.
Is Azerbaijan Safe for Travel?
Overall, Azerbaijan is a very safe country to explore. Azerbaijanis are a kind, hospitable people who will go the extra mile to accommodate travelers. However, as in any country, crime does occur. Stay vigilant to avoid pickpockets and avoid flashing your belongings at bus terminals, train stations, on public transport and in other crowded areas. Negotiate prices with taxi drivers and street vendors in advance to avoid being overcharged.
If you decide to drive around the country on your own, drive during the daytime. Some roads, particularly in the mountains, are marked by potholes and uneven pavement, so driving after dark can be dangerous. Pay extra attention when crossing the street, as Azerbaijani drivers are not always mindful of pedestrians .
Choose Your Transport
A number of direct international flights connect Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, with global travel hubs such as Beijing, Dubai, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London, Moscow, New York, Paris, Tbilisi and Tel Aviv. Other routes connect Baku with the major Central Asian cities of Almaty, Ashgabat, Nursultan, Tashkent and Tbilisi, and a convenient railway connection links Azerbaijan with Georgia, Russia and Ukraine.
Once in Azerbaijan, you can explore the country in a private vehicle or utilize domestic flights for longer routes between Baku and Ganja, Nakhichavan and other cities.
Please note that Azerbaijan travel restrictions do not permit direct travel between Armenia and Azerbaijan .
Best Time to Visit Azerbaijan
With nine climate zones stretching across the country, Azerbaijan is a worthy travel destination year-round. Spring and autumn draw the most crowds with their pleasant temps and vibrant landscapes, but summer and winter also have plenty to offer:
Winter: Winter transforms the high peaks of Azerbaijan into a snowy white paradise. Ski resorts at Shahdag and Tufandag are filled with frenzied fun, while many see wintertime as a chance to slow down and relax over hearty Azerbaijani food. Since Azerbaijan’s winter is usually quite mild, many local attractions are still accessible to travelers. With fewer tourists around, you can count on a much more individualized experience and unbeatable off-season discounts.
Spring: The season starts with the Persian New Year, the country’s most important holiday celebrated at the end of March. If you want to shape your tour around cultural immersion activities, spring is a great time to come! The weather noticeably warms up by late spring, when flowers and green foliage start to dominate the landscape. Not surprisingly, nature lovers find spring the best period to enjoy Azerbaijan’s great outdoors. Autumn: As September approaches, the summer heat decreases while fruits and vegetables ripen in gardens and farms. Travelers flock to admire the autumn forests surrounding Lake Goygol in Ganja or to observe bird migrations in local national parks.

Summer: Summers in Azerbaijan are hot, with temperatures in Baku occasionally reaching 40°C (104°F). It’s the perfect time to explore the Caspian Sea beaches or, if you wish to escape the coastal heat, to hike in the Caucasus Mountains.

Azerbaijan Holidays and Festivals
Azerbaijan is the only Muslim country in the South Caucasus, and as such the country’s culture and customs vary widely from their predominantly Christian neighbors. This difference is apparent when it comes to national holidays: As Muslims, Azerbaijanis observe Ramadan Bayrami (Eid al-Fitr) and Gurban Bayrami (Eid al-Adha) but not Christmas or Easter. Persian New Year, or Navruz, is also widely celebrated in the country.
Most parties in Azerbaijan are loud, colorful and full of laughter. This hospitable nation is always happy to welcome guests during festivities, so take advantage of the opportunity by arranging your Azerbaijan travels around one of these celebrations:
New Year (1st-2nd January) – New Year is one of the most popular holidays in the country, a joyful time spent with relatives and friends. It begins on the evening of 31st December with a splendid feast. Once the clock strikes midnight, spectacular fireworks shows erupt all across the country. The best ones take place in Baku, particularly at Baku Boulevard. Best place to celebrate: Baku
Novruz (20th-25th March) – Navruz is the celebration of the Lunar New Year, which according to Persian tradition begins with the arrival of spring. The festival is celebrated with song, dance, games and copious amounts of food. Best place to celebrate: Baku, Sheki
Republic Day (28th May) – Republic Day commemorates the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, established on 28th May, 1918. The Republic was the first secular democratic country in the Islamic world, a fact which brings great pride to Azerbaijanis. Each year on this day, top officials lay a wreath at the Republic Monument in Baku, and concerts and parades celebrating Azerbaijan’s history and culture are held across the country. Best place to celebrate: Baku
Gabala Music Festival (July-August) – Gabala Festival starts at the end of July and lasts for a week. This open-air festival combines classical piano concerts with jazz improvisations and an evening of traditional mugham music. Best place to celebrate: Gabala (Qabala)
Baku International Jazz Festival (October) – This fantastic musical event, which has been taking place in Baku since 2005, brings together jazz musicians and jazz lovers from all around the globe. Rather than a one-day event, it’s a series of concerts stretched over several days. Best place to celebrate: Baku
Goychay Pomegranate Festival (November) – The Pomegranate Festival is an annual cultural celebration featuring a carnival and an exhibition dedicated to different varieties of pomegranates and pomegranate products. Visitors can also enjoy concerts of traditional Azerbaijani music, performances of various folklore groups and friendly competitions. Best place to celebrate: Goychay

Curious about Azerbaijani Cuisine?
Our list of top dishes to taste while in Azerbaijan:

- Kebab: Pieces of seasoned meat, usually mutton, placed on skewers and fried over a coal barbecue called a mangal (manqal). The dish is frequently served with vegetables and a thin, unleavened flatbread called lavash.
- Ovdukh: A yogurt-based soup served cold. Yogurt is mixed with water and poured over sliced boiled meat, hard-boiled eggs, sliced cucumber and herbs.
- Qovurma: A simple yet delicious dish featuring mutton spiced with saffron and stewed with onions and tomatoes. Qovurma can also include chicken and fruit.
- Kufta (kofta): Delectable meatballs made of mutton or beef in tomato sauce. The meal is flavored with onions, salt, pepper, sugar and vinegar.
- Lavangi: – The complete opposite of kufta, it features a whole baked fish, chicken or duck filled with walnuts, onions and spices before being baked. Lavangi is most popular in the coastal regions.
- Piti: A highly popular soup made of tail fat and vegetables cooked in an aromatic mutton bone broth.
- Plov: This sumptuously seasoned rice-based meal comes in over forty varieties that differ in ingredients and cooking techniques. Traditionally, Azerbaijani plov features warm rice and fried pieces of beef or chicken mixed with onions, nuts, dried fruits and spices. In some areas, wheat is used in place of rice.
- Qutab: A thinly rolled dough folded into a cylindrical shape and fried, qutab is usually filled with meat, green vegetables or pumpkin. The finished product is cut into smaller triangular pieces and served with a glass of yogurt.
- Baklava (Pakhlava): Azerbaijan’s most renowned dessert, it’s comprised of layers of thinly rolled wheat or rice dough mixed with honey and nuts. Baklava has many regional variations, but especially popular is the classic Baku pakhlava, with a nut on top of each piece.

Dos and Don’ts in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijanis are a gracious people, quick to forgive any mistakes committed by foreigners unfamiliar with local customs. Still, knowing a bit about the host culture is seen as a sign of respect and helps a lot in forging friendships as you travel.
- Take off your shoes before walking into a mosque or home.
- Show respect for the elderly by giving them the best seats on buses and at dinner tables.
- Bring a gift if you will be joining a local family for a meal or an overnight stay.
- Confirm prices with taxi drivers before getting into the car to avoid being overcharged.
- Be prepared to answer personal questions. People in Azerbaijan will be interested in your personal life and will not hesitate to ask about your age, marital status, children, etc. This curiosity is simply a sign of interest and concern.
- Throw bread in the rubbish bin or leave it on the ground, as this is offensive to Azerbaijanis
- Discuss politics.
- Accept gifts straightaway - if someone offers you a present, it is polite to refuse it twice before accepting on the third time.
- Make the OK sign, an offensive gesture in Azerbaijani culture.
- Blow your nose in public, which is rude to Azerbaijanis.

What travelers are saying
"First time we (mom and daughter) have done a tour and first time with on the go tours. What a special trip we had doing the 13 day Casablanca to Essaouira Morocco tour (26 Nov - 6 Dec 2023). We started the first 8 days doing the totally Morocco tour and the last few days at our own pace with down time in Essaouira. Jamal our guide led the tour from start to finish and took us safely on a culture filled journey. His knowledge of the country, it’s history and people was informative and inspiring. Every request was “no problem” and delivered with a smile and happy demeanour. Everything in Morrocco was “no problem” and we felt safe and looked after. We were driven in a comfortable coach with enough stops along the way to not feel long by our competent driver Suleman. The hotels, Riad and Dar were extremely comfortable with exceptional service. We would not have had the same experience travelling on our own, we felt as though we truly experienced Morocco. Everything was a highlight for us and we will definitely book another on the go tour in the future. If you wanting to see true Morocco we would strongly recommend doing this tour."

Is Azerbaijan Safe?
- Safety alert level 3 : As of October 2020, Azerbaijain is considered a safety risk for travelers due to Covid-19 and violence
Azerbaijan has traditionally been a fairly stable and safe country for travelers despite its location. In the late summer of 2020 however, violence erupted between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh . Nagorno-Karabakh is technically recognized as part of Azerbaijan however it is ethnically Armenian. The conflict has been exacerbated due to the alliances from the neighboring countries, namely Turkey which has thrown support behind Azerbaijan.
Travelers should be aware of this unrest before considering visiting Azerbaijan. The safety warning level for Azerbaijan is currently at 3 “Reconsider Travel”. Terrorism is a concern, not just in the disputed region. American travelers take note that in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, the US has limited resources to assist tourists.
If you decide to travel to Azerbaijan, we highly recommend a vacation package or guided tour . This will ensure you have a support network and local assistance with the language and safe places to go.

- The currency in Azerbaijani is the manat (AZN)
US dollars and Euros can be exchanged easily and most major cities have ATMs. Restaurants, hotels, and shops in the major cities usually accept credit cards as well.
Best time to visit Azerbaijan
- Spring , between April-June
- Fall , between September-October
Azerbaijan experiences extremely cold winters and very hot summers, so the best time to go is during the shoulder seasons between April-June and September-October.
If you don’t mind a little bit of nippy cold weather, visit Azerbaijan in March for “Novruz Bayrami” the Persian New Year celebrations. The spring wildflowers are also reputed to be spectacular!

Shamakhi is in the east-central Azerbaijan. It is located 76 miles (122 km) west of Baku and is one of the oldest cities in the republic, dating from the 6th century AD, but the modern city was not incorporated until 1824. From the 9th to the 16th century, it was the residence of the Shirvan shahs. There are numerous historical buildings, including a mosque and a mausoleum, which have been damaged by the frequent earthquakes. Şamaxı is now a centre of food industries and is especially noted for wines. A brocaded, flat-stitch carpet with mosaic-tile patterns is produced in the surrounding area
Shaki (Sheki), a small town in the lower slopes of Greater Caucasus. The main attractions in Shaki, alongside the surrounding forested mountains and snow-topped peaks of Caucasus, are related to the colorful history of the city. The first settlements in the area date back to the Bronze Age, but the present day city was established in 18th century, after floods destroyed the original Shaki. The town, and royal capital was moved to Nukha Fortress, built by Khan Haji Chalabi in year 1772. In early 19th century Shaki flourished as a trade town between caravan routes, and as a silk-weaving town. The walled fortress is well-preserved, and on a stroll in the old town, tourists can visit beautifully restored royal palaces and historical caravanserais.
Located in the north-east of Azerbaijan, Guba is a great place to experience the Caucasus Mountains. Timeless mountain villages are populated by diverse peoples and offer great hiking and ecotourism opportunities. In the city itself you can discover some intriguing culinary secrets while in the surrounding villages local women weave some of the finest carpets in the Caucasus.
Shahdag – is exactly that special place, where you should go, if you wish to travel to winter fairytale. Those snow-white fields, bright sun, and mountain weather – best remedy from the tiredness from noisy cities. Being the first ski resort in Azerbaijan, Shahdag very soon became the favorite place of many local citizens, where they can celebrate the New Year or just spend joyful weekends.
Ganja, the second-largest city in Azerbaijan with a name that is hard to forget, is a city full of beautiful red brick architectures, a plethora of things to do and see, and a great base to go explore the beautiful lakes of Goygol and Maralgol. Ganja has a plethora of beautiful ancient architectures all around the city and one of the most prominent ones is the Shah Abbas Mosque or as some call it Juma Mosque (Friday Mosque). Ganja is a homeland of the famous poet Nizami Ganjavi, poetess Mahsati Ganjavi, poet and “sage of Ganja” Mirza Shafi Vazeh. The Mausoleum of Nizami Ganjavi is located right at the entry of the city. The tomb of Nizami has been a place of devoted pilgrimage for many centuries.
Wedged between the Caspian Sea and the lush Talysh Mountains, Lankaran is a region of unique natural diversity. The city itself is an old port that used to be surrounded by fortifications, and it’s ideally placed between some of Azerbaijan’s best nature reserves. The region is also famed for its citrus fruits and flavoursome cuisine, as well as being the centre of Azerbaijani tea growing.

Azerbaijan, Georgia & Armenia: Across the Caucasus
To view images fullscreen please turn device
This if we say so ourselves, is an outstanding itinerary, capturing the best of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, one of our favourite regions for cultural adventure.
Taking you from the shores of the Caspian Sea and the splendid history of Baku, through the pretty wine fields of Kakheti and up to the spectacular High Caucasus mountains, you will be following in the footsteps of Silk Road traders, Crusader Knights and Ottoman Princes. Taking you from the shores of the Caspian Sea and the splendid history of Baku, through the pretty wine fields of Kakheti and up to the spectacular High Caucasus mountains, you will be following in the footsteps of Silk Road traders, Crusader Knights and Ottoman Princes. This region, lying at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is packed with the legends of the Golden Fleece, stunning scenery and warm and hospitable people, with a flourishing food and wine scene.
It also, amazingly, remains relatively unknown even to many experienced travellers and this is the perfect trip for those wanting a diverse experience in an often overlooked part of our world.
At a glance
Typically coasters in Azerbaijan & Armenia, and minibuses in Georgia but it may vary depending on final group size.
EXPERT TEAM
Accommodation, entrance fees, fitness rating.
As an overall ethos, wherever possible we aim to use characterful accommodation that enhances the overall travel experience, not just offers a bed for the night. This can obviously vary dramatically from country to country and from trip to trip. On this particular trip we will be in hotels and guesthouse, all with en-suite facilities. Please note that the accommodation mentioned in the itinerary is intended as a guide only and is always subject to availability.

Day 1 Tour starts in Baku
Rooms will be available in Baku from this afternoon. Those arriving on the group flights will arrive in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Day 2 Baku: Qobustan rock art & Baku tour
After breakfast, we will head to the UNESCO site of Qobustan, home to over 6000 Stone Age cave drawings, where we will explore the caves and petroglyphs. Then, after lunch at a local restaurant we’ll take a wander around Baku city centre, and discover the quirky architecture. This really is a city of two halves with the ancient walls and heritage buildings juxtaposed with the modern and flamboyant hub in the city. We take in such buildings as the 3 pointed skyscrapers, and the contemporary landmark of the Zaha Hadid–designed Heydar Aliyev Center, where we pay a visit. We will also make a stop at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum that displays the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets in the world, with both modern and historical weaving techniques on show.
Day 3 Baku - Lahij: Walled city, maidan tower and village of Lahij
We’ll have the full morning to enjoy Baku, the Caucasus’s most cosmopolitan city. We’ll focus predominantly on the old walled city and after entering via the Shamaxi gate, we’ll visit the imposing Maiden Tower and the impressive Shirvanshahs’ Palace (both UNESCO World Heritage sites). After lunch we will head west and finally into the foothills of the Caucasus to the picturesque mountain village of Lahij, famed for its coppersmiths and thriving craft trade.
Day 4 Lahij - Sheki: Crafts and traditions of Lahij
In the morning wander around this lovely village, shop in the market and meet some of the locals. Later, we’ll set off to Sheki, once a key trading post, sitting as it does on a major crossroads. This is our base for the next two nights and is one of the country’s highlights.
Day 5 Sheki: Khan’s palace, local market & Kis Village
With a full day in Sheki region, there’ll be time to visit the beautifully renovated Khan’s palace, the museum and local market and head out to the pretty village of Kis to see the round-towered Albanian Church. This afternoon there will be some free time so you can explore Sheki at your own pace.
Day 6 Sheki - Telavi: Local family lunch, Nekreski Monastery & Gremi Church
Today we will transfer to the Lagodekhi checkpoint and cross over into the Kakheti wine-growing region of Georgia. After joining a local family for lunch at their home, we'll drive to the Nekresi Monastery (4th century), once on the Silk Road, and visit the 16th-century Gremi Church complex, a photogenic citadel with splendid views over the surrounding wine country. In the evening we arrive in Telavi.
Day 7 Telavi - Gori: Wine cellars & tasting, State Museum
This morning, before we leave Telavi, we’ll visit the local market. We’ll then visit the 18th century fortified hilltop town of Sighnaghi. From here we will visit a unique wine cellar where wine is produced and stored, and taste some of the typical wines of the region. On our way to Gori we will make a stop at the Georgian State Museum to see it's stunning treasures.
Day 8 Gori - Kazbegi National Park: Stalin Museum, Uplistsikhe cave city, Ananuri
Gori is infamous not only as one of the focal points of the Russian occupation in August 2008 but also as the birth place of a certain Josef Stalin. Here we will visit the fascinating Stalin Museum (which remains unchanged since its Cold War era opening), before heading on to the ancient remains of the Uplistsikhe cave city. After lunch we’ll start our very scenic drive up through the High Caucasus Mountains along the Georgian Military Highway, which is still a major route linking Georgia with Russia. En route to our night stop at Stepantsminda we’ll visit Ananuri, a 17th century architectural complex, overlooking the Zhinvali reservoir.
Day 9 Kazbegi National Park – Tbilisi: Gergeti Church & Mtskheta
This morning, there will be a chance to take a walk for about 2 hours up through beautiful valleys and forests to the Gergeti Trinity church (14th century) located on top of the mountain (2170m) and one of the country’s most iconic images. Weather permitting, we may also be able to catch a glimpse of one the highest glaciers in the Caucasus – Mt Kazbegi (5047m). We will then enjoy a delicious homemade lunch with a local family, before heading to Georgia’s ancient capital and its religious centre - Mtskheta (3000 years old). This afternoon we will visit two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Jvari church (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) where the Robe of Christ is said to be buried. Then we’ll continue on to Georgia’s stunning capital, Tbilisi, where we’ll have 2 nights.
Day 10 In Tbilisi: Old Tbilisi & café culture
In the morning we will have a city tour taking in Old Tbilisi. From the Metekhi Church overlooking the river Mtkvari (13th century) to the Narikala Fortress, one of the oldest fortifications in the city (4th century), we’ll also pay a visit to the Sulphur Baths, the synagogue, the Anchiskhati Church (6th century) and Sioni Cathedral (6/7th century) where the cross of St. Nino – the woman who brought Christianity to Georgia – is preserved. All these sights are in close proximity and it’s a pleasant walk. We then have the rest of the day to soak up the café culture of Tbilisi, relax and shop.
Day 11 Tbilisi – Dilijan (Armenia): Debed Canyon & Haghpat Monastery
After an early breakfast we will drive to the border and cross into Armenia. We will then drive via the stunning Debed Canyon to the Haghpat monastery, built between the 10th and 13th century, before reaching the alpine town of Dilijan.
Day 12 Dilijan – Goris: Lake Sevan, Sevanavank Monastery & Karahunj
Travelling further into this ancient land, we will take a spectacular drive via Lake Sevan, one of the world’s largest high altitude lakes (1900m) to the medevial Sevanavank Monastery. En route we will visit the Selim Caravanserai, dating from 1332 and reputed to be the best preserved of its type in the country. Finally we will stop off at the prehistoric site of Karahunj, described as the ‘Armenian Stonehenge’, before arriving in Goris.
Day 13 Goris – Yerevan: Tatev Monastery, Noravank Monastery
This morning we will head to one of the highlights of Armenia – the 9th century Tatev monastery - which is reached by the longest cable car in the world, known as the Wings of Tatev. This is Armenia’s most sacred site, and the clifftop location of this still-operating church is breathtaking. On our way to Yerevan we will stop at Noravank Monastery, which was founded in the 13th Century.
Day 14 Yerevan: City sightseeing & afternoon free time
Today we will enjoy the morning sightseeing around the Armenian capital, Yerevan. We will head to the Matendaran Manuscript museum and also visit the Memorial to the 1915 Genocide, before heading to the Cascades, a giant stairway made of limestone, which houses a contemporary art gallery hosting local and international exhibits. After lunch we will have some free time to explore this pleasant city at our own pace, before heading out for our farewell dinner.
Day 15 Tour ends in Yerevan
The tour ends after breakfast at the hotel (rooms available until midday today).

Key Information
The weather conditions can be extremely varied (even within the course of a day!). The Greater Caucasus Range moderates local climate by serving as a barrier against cold air from the north and the relatively small territory covers different climatic zones, which are determined by distance from the Black Sea and by altitude. The climatic zones range from humid subtropical to snow and glaciers.
IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?
It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.
KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER
Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional. There will be some long journeys in the vehicles on the tour, so please be prepared for this.
THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL
We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.
TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS
As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!
Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.
Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.
Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.

Azerbaijan Travel Guide
Last Updated: February 26, 2024
Dubbed “the land of fire,” Azerbaijan is a former Soviet republic famous for its high-tech capital city of Baku, the Great Caucasus mountains, and strange fire phenomenon of Fire Mountain (hence the country’s nickname).
I knew two things about Azerbaijan before I visited: it won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 and it has a lot of oil money.
Though a very rural and quiet country, when I backpacked around Azerbaijan, I found it to be one of those “undiscovered gems” that too many people skip — especially if you want to get out and hike without crowds!
Azerbaijan is an amazing, wonderful, beautiful, and friendly place. The country became the world’s first secular democratic Muslim-majority state when it first declared independence in 1918. Today, Baku, the capital, is a modern city steeped in oil money with a recently built subway, fast Wi-Fi, and tons of Parisian-style buildings (in the 1900s, newly rich oil barons modeled the city after Paris) as well as towering and futuristic steel and glass buildings.
The rest of the country is incredibly rural with small towns surrounded by gorgeous mountains and farmland. In tiny villages, old men with canes sat in town squares gazing at passersby’s like out of some movie. Locals, who don’t see many visitors, are very welcoming.
From things to do, costs, ways to stay safe, save money, how to get around, and more, this travel guide to Azerbaijan will help you plan your trip and ensure you make the most of your time in the off-the-beaten-path destination!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Azerbaijan
1. Explore Baku
Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, lies along the Caspian Sea and is a somewhat curious mix of old walled city and modern skyscrapers. It’s a cool small city that only needs a day or two. There’s good food, interesting museums, and amazing wine bars. The Old Town, called Icherisheher, is a maze of cobblestone streets where you’ll find museums, art galleries, mosques, and two landmarks—Maiden Tower and Shirvanshahs’ Palace. Restaurants and rooftop bars have great views over the waterfront, where you can stroll on Baku Boulevard and take a ride on the Baku Eye Ferris wheel. Architecture buffs won’t want to miss the Zara Hadid-designed Heydar Aliyev Centre, a museum focused on Azerbaijani art and culture; and the Carpet Museum, in a clever building shaped like a rolled-up carpet. The most prominent examples of modern architecture are the three iconic Flame towers—LED-covered skyscrapers that curve at the top.
2. Visit Sheki
The city of Sheki was a famous stop on the Silk Road, and the large old caravanserai (inn with a courtyard) dating to the early 18th century still stands today. Built like a castle to protect merchants (high walls, one gate), you can stay there today for around 50 AZN per night. Silk is still produced in the well-preserved historic town center where you can also see craftsmen at work. The city is known for its colored glass mosaics called shebeke, which are set in wooden lattice framework without glue or nails. With a facade covered in shebeke, Sheki Khan’s Palace is worth a visit to see the intricately patterned frescoes, ceramics, and other ornate decorations in this former summer palace.
3. Go to Lahij
Lahij is beautiful, with cobblestone streets and stellar views of the valley. A tiny, remote town, Lahij’s mountainous location makes it a popular summer destination for people looking to escape the heat of lower elevations. Known for coppersmithing, Lahij artisans have perfected the art of handcrafting and engraving plates, cookware, water vessels, and other items. Other handmade items from tin and leather are sold in shops where you can often see two or three generations at work. There a lot of hiking trails and activities around that you can do too. You’ll find some castle ruins on the trail leading up from the nearby river and waterfall but be warned: it’s a steep 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) up and the ruins (really just a wall) are easily missed.
4. See the Gobustan Petroglyph Reserve
The UNESCO-listed Gobustan Petroglyph Reserve is home to 6,000 rock paintings that are up to 40,000 years old. The well-preserved sketches display ancient populations traveling on reed boats, men hunting antelope and wild bulls, and women dancing. Unique to Gobustan is that the petroglyphs date from the Mesolithic Era to the Middle Ages and document life over the centuries. The area, including tombs and caves, has provided archaeological findings like jewelry and weapons that you can see in the Gobustan Museum.
5. Visit Ateshgah
Ateshgah is a temple just outside Baku that has been used as a Hindu, Sikh, and now a Zoroastrian place of worship. Each room has panels detailing the temple’s history and the Zoroastrian religion. In the complex center is a naturally occurring, unquenchable flame representing God that has inspired pilgrims for millennia. Enclosed by stone walls in the shape of a pentagon, the fire altar is in the middle of the courtyard. About 19 miles from Baku, which has long been called the City of Fire, it’s open daily. Admission is 4 AZN.
Other Things to See and Do in Azerbaijan
1. check out the mud volcanoes.
Azerbaijan is home to nearly a third of the world’s mud volcanoes, which form when pockets of underground gas force their way to the surface. They’re like geysers, but with mud, and since they’re not made from magma, the mud is pretty cold (just above freezing temperature). Of the country’s 700 mud volcanoes, 350 are active and range from little bubbling pools to entire islands like Dashli that were formed by mud eruptions and also have mud volcanoes. The ones at Gobustan National Park are the most popular to visit from Baku on a day tour (it’s possible to take a bus to the park’s entrance but finding the volcanoes isn’t easy). Half-day tours start from about 60 AZN.
2. Tour the Sheki Khan’s Palace
The Sheki Khan’s Palace was built in 1797 and was once the summer residence for the Khans. It is one of the most ornate and iconic buildings in the South Caucasus. Its shebeke windows (incredibly delicate stained glass with geometric patterns made specifically by Azerbaijan masters) cast brilliant rays of colored light across the entire interior. The palace opens daily from 10am-6pm and costs 2 AZN or 5 AZN with a guide.
3. See the Palace of the Shirvanshahs
Within Baku’s walled Inner City is the 54-acre limestone Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Surrounded by walls and topped by domes, the sprawling palace complex was built in the 15th century and includes a mosque with a 16-meter (52 foot) minaret, bathhouse, mausoleum, ancient bathhouse ruins, and an octagon-shaped tomb known as the “Dervish’s Tomb.” The complex features grand gates adorned with intricately carved arabesques, doorways covered in Arabic scripture, magnificent domes, and courtyards with octagonal reflecting pools. Inside, there are displays of traditional artifacts such as clothing, jewelry, ancient texts, weaponry, and more. The famous 12th-century Maiden Tower, an iconic Azerbaijani monument with Arabic, Persian and Ottoman influences, is here too. Standing at over 29.5 meters (97 feet), it offers panoramic views of the city from the top. (Fun fact: They still have no idea what this tower was built for, though over 20 legends attempt to explain its purpose.) The Palace is open daily from 10am until 6pm and admission is 2 AZN or 6 AZN for a guided tour.
4. Relax on the beaches of the Absheron
During the summer, the residents of Baku migrate to their country houses (known as dachas ) on the Absheron Peninsula to escape the city heat. In recent years, thanks to the resorts popping up along the coast, tourists are following suit. The public beaches at Mardakan or Buzovna are two popular choices for sunbathing and swimming in the warm waters of the Caspian Sea.Restaurants specialize in fish, and you can rent an umbrella or tent and purchase refreshments like tea and watermelon from beach vendors.
5. Go hiking in the Guba region
The Guba or Quba region, located 2 hours north of Baku, is a remote region famous for its traditional villages, rolling apple orchards, and mountainous landscapes perfect for lots of hiking. Tenghi Canyon is popular to visit, as is Khinalig, a major Zoroastrian center. Krasnaya Sloboda, the only all-Jewish town outside of Israel, is populated by the Juhuro, or Mountain Jews. Although you can travel here and hike independently, many companies offer organized day tours of the region, for around 53-115 AZN.
6. Hit the slopes
Azerbaijan may not be known internationally for its skiing, but it does have two winter resorts that offer an “off-the-beaten-path” winter experience: Shahdag Mountain Resort and Tufandag Mountain Resort. The ski season is very short, lasting just two months from mid-December to late February. A ski day pass costs about 25-35 AZN. Ski lessons cost around 40 AZN per lesson. Shahdag offers an Alpine Coaster thrill ride and snowshoeing while Tufandog’s observation deck that juts out over a cliff and its 22- and 65-foot swings attract Instagrammers with no fear of heights year round.
7. Go to Quba
Head north by bus to the mountain town of Quba for a cooler climate, old mosques, and traditional carpet weaving in beautiful alpine surroundings. Home to less than 40,000 people, there are dramatic panoramic views everywhere you turn, with pastel-colored houses and red-tiled roofs standing out against the lush verdant mountains. Nestled on the slopes of Shahdag mountain on a flowing river, Quba remains similar to 19th-century Azerbaijan. While you’re here, make sure to visit the Quba Genocide Memorial Complex, which is dedicated to the memory of the 12,000 Azerbaijanis who were killed by the Bolsheviks and Armenians during the March Days genocide that took place in 1918.
8. See Qabala
Once strategically located along the middle of the Silk Road, this dusty, old, not-so-small town is named after the nearby Gabala village. The walled town, dating back to the 4th-century, used to be the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania. As such, there are many ancient monuments and archaeological sites here, including a thousand-year-old defense tower, a 4th-century temple, a 13th-century mosque, and a mausoleum. The area is also home to wonderful hiking trails, beautiful waterfalls, dense woodlands, lakes, and one of the best ski resorts in the country. Take an early bus from Sheki and spend the night here. All the attractions are close together so you can easily see the town in a day.
9. Hang out in Ganja
Azerbaijan’s third-biggest city dates to the 6th century and features many attractions, historical sites, and parks. Main attractions include the 18th-century Shah Abbas Caravanserai (similar to the one in Sheki), traditional mosques and churches from the 14th-19th centuries, the domed, red-bricked 17th-century Chokak Hamam, the 19th-century Khan Gardens, and the Tomb of Nizami Ganjavi, the country’s most famous 12th-century poet (he’s kind of a national hero). The most important museum here is the Ganja State History-Ethnography Museum where you can learn the history of the region from ancient to modern times through its displays of over 30,000 artifacts and objects. For a quirkier thing to see, visit the Bottle House, a private residence built in the 1960s and covered in over 48,000 glass bottles.
10. Visit Lankaran
This sleepy resort town on the Caspian Sea is home to the Old Prison and Lighthouse (Stalin was a prisoner here for a while), an ancient bazaar, an 18th-century fortress, and a 19th-century mosque. You can spend a good day sightseeing here and then another on the beaches further south in Kenaramesha. If you have more time, take a day trip to the Ghizil-Agaj State Reserve, which is home to some 250 bird species.
11. Skip Yanar Dag (aka the “Fire Mountain”)
Yanar Dag (Fire Mountain or Burning Mountain) is a natural gas fire that blazes continuously on a hillside just outside Baku. Marco Polo once described the land in this area as being on fire because of phenomena like this, but this is one of the only fires left in the region. It’s small, so I wouldn’t make the journey specifically to see this, but it’s included in most tours of the region anyway.
Azerbaijan Travel Costs
Accommodation – There are only a handful of hostel options in Azerbaijan. A bed in a 4-6-bed dorm costs around 26-32 AZN per night in Baku and 10-20 AZN anywhere else. Prices in Baku are generally higher than elsewhere around the country.
A private room in a hostel is around 40-80 AZN per night. Most hostels have self-catering facilities, Wi-Fi, and free breakfast.
Budget hotels and guesthouses are much more common in the country. These cost around 60-85 AZN per night for a double room that includes breakfast.
Airbnb is available in Azerbaijan, with private rooms starting around 25 AZN per night while entire homes and apartments cost at least 80 AZN per night.
Wild camping is legal in Azerbaijan so feel free to pitch your tent anywhere, apart from a few national parks where it is forbidden (including Shirvan, Ag Gol or Absheron National Park). If you prefer to stay at a campsite with amenities, there are some campgrounds scattered around. You won’t find any online booking though, so keep your eyes peeled for signs when you get to a new place.
Food – Azerbaijani cuisine is a blend of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors and is usually heavily spiced, aromatic, and vegetable-rich. Many traditional cooking methods (such as using copper or clay cookware) are still in use today. For meat, mutton, lamb, and sturgeon are the most comm, while vegetables widely used include eggplant, cucumber, red pepper, and tomato.
Dining out is very affordable in Azerbaijan. Street food like döner kebabs cost 2-3.50 AZN. Fast food like McDonald’s costs about 9 AZN for a combo meal while a whole pizza is 7.50-11 AZN.
A meal at a restaurant serving traditional cuisine is around 7-11 AZN. Look for traditional meals like plov, or pilaf, which uses saffron-flavored rice, fried meat, and vegetables. This is usually shared and costs around 10-12 AZN for a large plate. Cold starters, such as hummus or salads, cost 3-7 AZN. Traditional soups, of which there are many varieties, are around 3-5 AZN.
“Western” food is more expensive, with main dishes (such as a burger) costing around 16-18 AZN. Fish or steak dishes are generally around 25-40 AZN. A three-course meal at a higher-end restaurant costs about 50 AZN.
For drinks, you can expect to pay 2-4 AZN for a beer or soda, 6-8 for a glass of wine, and 8-10 AZN for a cocktail. A cappuccino is around 4-5 AZN.
If you are planning to cook your own food, a week’s worth of basic groceries costs 50-70 AZN but since most places don’t have kitchens, you’re better off just buying snacks and grab-and-go meals if you don’t want to eat at a restaurant.
Backpacking Azerbaijan Suggested Budgets
If you are backpacking Azerbaijan, my suggested budget is 85 AZN per day. This covers staying in a hostel dorm, eating street food, cooking some meals, visiting a few attractions like museums and palaces, and using local transportation to get around.
On a mid-range budget of about 175 AZN per day, you can stay in a private hostel room or Airbnb, eat out a lot more, take some guided tours, enjoy a few drinks out, take some taxis, and visit more paid attractions.
On a “luxury’ budget of 375 AZN or more per day, you can stay in hotels, get a rental car, eat out for all your meals, drink as much as you want, and do all the activities and tours you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though — the sky is the limit!
Use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might pay less every day). We want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in AZN.
Azerbaijan Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips
Baku can be kind of expensive but, once you leave the capital, prices drop considerably and it’s easy to see a lot and spend a little. Here are some additional ways to save money when you visit Azerbaijan:
- Take a free walking tour – While in Baku, take a free walking tour to familiarize yourself with the city. I recommend using Baku Free Tour .
- Wild camp – It’s free to wild camp in Azerbaijan, so bring a tent and camp just about anywhere you like!
- Cook your own meals – Some hostels here don’t include kitchen facilities, so if you want to save money, make sure you book accommodation that does. Buying your own groceries may not be as glamorous as going out to eat, but it will save you money!
- Stay with a local – If you plan ahead, you can usually find nice Couchsurfing hosts throughout the country if you look in advance. This way, you not only have a place to stay but you’ll have a local host that can share their insider tips and information!
- Walk everywhere – All of the major towns and cities in Azerbaijan are quite walkable, so skip the public transportation (and the taxis) if you want to save a few extra dollars.
- Enjoy the free spaces – There are plenty of free parks as well as many free hiking trails around the country. Save your budget and enjoy the outdoors!
- Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is generally not safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
Where to Stay in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan had a boom in 4-5-star hotels during the first influx of tourism, but today there are more budget-friendly accommodations available for backpackers. New hostels are popping up all the time, but most of them are still in Baku. Here are some of my favorite places to stay in Azerbaijan:
- Sahil Hostel (Baku)
- Travel Inn Hostel (Baku)
- Hostel Ilgar (Sheki)
How to Get Around Azerbaijan
Public Transportation – Public transportation prices vary by city, but expect to pay around 0.20 AZN for a standard ticket for the bus.
Baku has a subway system that costs 0.30 AZN per ride. You need a prepaid smart card, called BakiKart, to access the metro. The card itself costs 2 AZN and you can refill it as much as you like.
If you need to take a taxi, prices start around 1.89 AZN and costs around 0.60 AZN for every kilometer.
Bus – Buses and minibuses (marshrutkas) are the most common options for intercity travel. Marshrutkas are the local favorite for getting around, so you can always find one that goes wherever you need to go. They run on general timetables, but usually just leave whenever they are full. Expect to pay about 2 AZN for an 80-kilometer (50-mile) trip. Going from Baku to Quba is around 160 kilometers (100 miles), takes around 2-3 hours, and costs 5 AZN. You usually pay the bus driver directly, but be sure to check at the stations, especially larger ones.
Trains – Trains in Azerbaijan are a lot slower and less frequent than buses; however, if you’re not in a rush, night trains can be an excellent option to save on a night’s accommodation. Baku connects directly with Tbilisi , Moscow, Rostov, Kiev, Kharkiv ( Ukraine ), Brest ( Belarus ) as well as towns and cities within Azerbaijan. It is possible to travel across Azerbaijan overnight in a reserved sleeping berth for as little as 9 AZN. Booking in advance is advisable during the peak season to ensure you can reserve a bunk.
For detailed information on the trains in Azerbaijan and to book, use TuTu .
Budget Airlines – The main airline that services all major cities in Azerbaijan is Azerbaijan Airlines. However, unless you are pressed for time, I wouldn’t fly. It’s a hassle, expensive, and flights are infrequent.
Car Rental – Car rentals can be as low as 60 AZN per day for a multi-day rental when booked in advance. If you’re driving, make sure to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) as you need one for any car rental.
When to Go to Azerbaijan
The best time to visit Azerbaijan really depends on the activities you want to do. Spring and early summer are the nicest months for hiking and enjoying outdoor activities, with temperatures usually between 10-20°C (50-68°F).
From April to June is when the flowers are in full bloom in the lowlands, and July is a popular month for trekking. It’s still warm during this time, but there aren’t as many crowds. This time of year is especially good for outdoor activities. August can be particularly hot, with temperatures as high as 40°C (104°F).
Temperatures drop below freezing in the winter months, but if you’re here to ski, this is the time to do it. Although Azerbaijan has a large Muslim population, the locals celebrate Christmas with markets and festivals throughout December.
How to Stay Safe in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is very safe. I mean like super safe. The country is ruled by one of those “president for life” guys (the current president has been in power since 2003 and is the son of the former president) and in order to increase tourism, has created severe punishments for crimes against tourists. Therefore, you are unlikely to get in trouble because everyone knows the harsh penalties if they get caught. There’s a lot of tourist police around too.
As in any destination, never leave your drink unattended when out at the bar and never walk home alone intoxicated. Solo female travelers should feel safe here, though it’s best to avoid walking around alone at night just to be safe.
When you get out of Baku, the cities and towns are pretty small and everyone knows everyone. People aren’t going to try to scam you. That said, here is a list of common travel scams to keep an eye out for just to be safe.
If you need police assistance, dial 102 for help.
Also, do not try and talk politics here. Because “the president for life” type doesn’t like dissent, a quick way to get in trouble is to talk about politics and criticize the government. Avoid politics to avoid trouble.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.
The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Officially known as the Republic of Azerbaijan, it is renowned for spa, religious and health care tourism, with Shahdag Mountains remaining one of its key highlights, widely popular for winter sports such as skiing with state-of-the-art facilities. The capital itself – Baku, is a mix of ancient core, surrounded by 19th-century Parisian-style architecture, and has a modern side to it with its futuristic building on continuous expansion. Visit the palace of Shirvanshahs, rich in artefacts that were discovered in the 15th century. Next on the list is the ancient Muhammad mosque which dates back to the 11th century and depicts its heritage and the classic architecture of that era. Since the country boundaries the Middle East in the south, there is a subtle touch of Iranian culture, as you will find shops of Persian rugs (carpets) at various locations. The city has two places to explore its heritage – the National Museum of History and the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum. Book an Azerbaijan holiday package to witness the best things this destination has to offer.
Experience Azerbaijan
After exploring Baku for some time, it’s time to head out on the long highway running on the banks of the Caspian Sea, with a brief visit to Upland Park – is a perfect spot for photogenic travellers as it offers a perfect view of the sea on the one side and the view of the city of Baku on the other. Heading, straight on the bank beside the Caspian Sea, you’ll visit the Flame Towers built in 2012 that display a digital graphite of flames. Also, the tower has a restaurant on the top with some great local cuisines.
On your Azerbaijan tour package, you’ll come to realize that it is an affordable country in general. The stays and the local food won’t make a hole in your pocket. Make sure to try Ayran(yoghurt-infused drink) and feijoa juice (juice made from fresh local fruits). There are a lot of vegan options for vegetarian travellers such as veg dolmas(with an option of non-veg as well), vegetarian piti (soup), and Mangal Salaty (fresh salad with a mix of local vegetables). However, if meat is what you like, try the local speciality - Lule kebabs, Saj ichi (popularly known as Barbeque of Azerbaijan). A very famous cuisine, because of its cooking style is “Dashrasi kebab” as it is cooked between stones with local spices offering a very unique taste.
The Countryside
The mud volcanoes are a staple in rural Azerbaijan, the density fluctuates depending on the terrain. However, the majority of them are located on the banks of the Caspian Sea. Furthermore, another milestone to conquer is the petroglyphs in Gobustan, these are ancient inscriptions on the rocks depicting the ancient civilization (similar to the Ellora caves in India with a multi-religious rock-cut cave complex). A thorough exploration of these artefacts will spark your interest full region during your Azerbaijan tour package.
Explore Lahij
The village Lahij/Lahich is a hill station located on the sloped of the great Caucasus and is a highly recommended place for anyone visiting Azerbaijan, as the beautiful village has been fabricated with cobblestone streets, offering a resemblance to the medieval Roman period. The village is famous for its craftsmanship for leatherwork, handcrafting carpets and creating unique pieces of copperware. A hike is perfect to explore the rich culture, with friendly and welcoming people. One of the major parts of Lahij represents the interpretation of Islam, folk rites, pre-Islamic faith, and Zoroastrianism.
Other Places to Visit in Azerbaijan
- Gabala - The first thing to observe is the “Diri baba mausoleum” which is said to have spiritual effects of eliminating catastrophes and diseases. Upon arrival in Gabala, enjoy the scenery surrounding Nohurgol Lake, with a very calming and soothing aura around it. Since the landscape is hilly, take a cable car tour and climb up the mountaintop to appreciate the stunning mountains covered with snow.
- Sheki - It is one of the nearby towns (3hr drive). Upon visit, the welcoming element is the palace of Sheki Khan, with dazzling and colourful glass known as “Shebeke”. Further heading down the road is the upper and lower caravanserai, this happens to be a check post on the ancient Silk Road. An hour or two of stroll around the streets will lead to an old Albanian church in the village of Kish, just before lunch.
- Lake Goygol – Situated in the lower Caucasus mountain range, it is one of the best places to visit in Azerbaijan. It is covered with dense forest from all directions and attracts many visitors who come to explore its beauty.
- Absheron National Park – Home to around 50 types of flora and fauna, it is a diverse wildlife reserve which attracts many tourists.

Armenian victims group asks International Criminal Court to investigate genocide claim

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — A human rights organization representing ethnic Armenians submitted evidence to the International Criminal Court on Thursday, arguing that Azerbaijan is committing an ongoing genocide against them.
Azerbaijan’s government didn’t immediately comment on the accusations. The neighboring countries have been at odds for decades over the territory of Karabakh , and are already facing off in a separate legal case stemming from that conflict.
Lawyers for the California-based Center for Truth and Justice, or CFTJ, say there is sufficient evidence to open a formal investigation into Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and other top leaders for genocide. They have submitted a so-called Article 15 communication urging the court’s chief prosecutor Karim Khan to look into alleged atrocities.
Khan’s office will now consider the evidence submitted and determine if the court will open an investigation, a decision expected to take months.
“My goal here is to get the highest bodies that protect human rights to take some action, not just mere words,” Lala Abgaryan, whose sister Gayane was killed by Azerbaijani soldiers in 2022, told The Associated Press.
Her sister’s body was badly mutilated and images of the abuse were spread online. Abgaryan says the pictures were so heinous that she suffered psychological damage after looking at them.
Long-standing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan erupted in 2020 into a war over Karabakh that left more than 6,600 people dead. The region is within Azerbaijan but had been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces since the end of a separatist war in 1994.
Last year, following a lightning military campaign, Azerbaijan retook the disputed territory. After Azerbaijan regained full control of Karabakh, which had a population of around 120,000, more than 100,000 of the region’s ethnic Armenians fled, although Azerbaijan said they were welcome to stay and promised their human rights would be ensured.
Prior to Azerbaijan’s offensive, Armenia and former International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo accused Azerbaijan of committing genocide by creating conditions aimed at destroying Karabakh Armenians as a group.
A group of around 30 people gathered in the rain in front of The Hague-based court Thursday to hand over more than 100 pages of documents.
The rights organization said it has submitted a dossier of evidence containing the testimony of more than 500 victims and witnesses.
“These atrocities are captured on social media, by Azerbaijani soldiers themselves, where you hear them laughing, making comments, and taking the dead bodies that they’ve just slaughtered and beheaded,” CFTJ leader Gassia Apkaria told the AP.
Legal experts say that genocide may be out of reach for the court. Armenia is a member of the ICC, but Azerbaijan isn’t, leaving prosecutors with jurisdiction only over crimes committed on Armenian territory. Karabakh is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.
Forcing nearly the entire population to relocate to Armenia, however, could fall within the court’s remit. Deportation is considered a crime against humanity. While Azerbaijan did not deport the people who fled last year, they left under duress.
“There is no way this was an exodus by chance,” says Mel O’Brien, an associate professor of international law at the University of Western Australia and genocide expert.
The court has moved forward with an investigation under similar circumstances into possible crimes committed by Myanmar against the Rohingya minority group . While Myanmar isn’t a member state, neighboring Bangladesh is and around 750,000 people have fled across the border after being forced from their homes.
The CFTJ’s request came amid two weeks of proceedings between Armenia and Azerbaijan at another global court in The Hague. The United Nations’ top court, the International Court of Justice, is hearing arguments related to a pair of cases stemming from the conflict. Each country has accused the other of violating a racial discrimination treaty.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner
- As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
- Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
- Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.
As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.
I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .
Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.
Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.
I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.
Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.
Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.
The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.
For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.
The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.
No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.
Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.
But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.
I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.
Adults-only vacations are on the rise.
Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.
Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.
If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.
Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.
I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.
Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.
Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .
Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.
One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.
There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.
Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.
Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.
Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.
Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.
Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.
Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.
I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.
Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

California Governor Newsom launches abortion travel ban ad campaign in Alabama
By Dave Pehling
Updated on: April 22, 2024 / 1:41 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco
California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking aim at states considering abortion travel bans with the launch of a new ad campaign.
Newsom's Campaign for Democracy ad is set to air in Alabama starting Monday. The governor tweeted out the ad in a social media post Sunday morning.
Alabama’s abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women’s travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this. pic.twitter.com/gHbYJYlEXk — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) April 21, 2024
The text with the video post reads, "Alabama's abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women's travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this."
The 30-second commercial shows two nervous young women driving in a car passing a sign that reads "State Line 1 Mile."
"We're almost there. You're gonna make it," the passenger tells the woman behind the wheel just before they hear a siren and are pulled over by a state trooper.
"Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care," a voiceover says as the state trooper walks up to the car.
"Miss, I'm going to need you to step out of the vehicle and take a pregnancy test," the trooper says, waving a test stick in one hand. The next shot shows the driver leaning on the hood of her car as the trooper puts her in handcuffs.
"Stop them by taking action at RightToTravel.org ," the voiceover intones as the ad ends.
Alabama is currently weighing a bill that would make it a crime to help women travel outside the state in order to receive an abortion. The ad is part of a larger effort to combat travel bans across the United States. Newsom was behind a similar ad that ran in Tennessee.
The RightToTravel.org website says that those two states and Oklahoma are considering bills that ban minors from traveling out of state to get an abortion without parental consent, even if it's a case of incest or if there is abuse in the family.
It isn't the first action the governor has taken in the political battle over abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June of 2022. Two days after the ruling, Newsom partnered with the governors of Oregon and Washington to issue a multi-state commitment promising to defend access to reproductive health care, including abortion and contraceptives.
In September of that year, he launched a billboard campaign in seven of the most restrictive anti-abortion states urging women seeking the procedure to come to California for treatment. He also signed more than a dozen new abortion laws protecting women's reproductive rights and ordered the state to end its contract with Walgreens after the pharmacy giant indicated it would not sell an abortion pill by mail in some conservative-led states .

Coming to Alabama: Newsom’s Abortion-Access Ad, Depicting an Arrest
The ad portrays a woman trying to leave the state to have an abortion. The Campaign for Democracy, a political action committee started by Mr. Newsom, the California governor, created it.
- Share full article
By Neil Vigdor
- April 21, 2024
A woman nervously peers into her rearview mirror as a patrolman activates his car’s lights and sirens. She is less than a mile from leaving Alabama to seek abortion services, but it’s too late: The next thing she knows, she is being handed a pregnancy test and is handcuffed.
The encounter is depicted in an unvarnished new television ad called “Fugitive.” The Campaign for Democracy, a political action committee created by Gov. Gavin Newsom, Democrat of California, produced the ad.
It will appear on Monday in Alabama, where Republicans have called for prosecuting women who travel elsewhere for an abortion. The state’s abortion ban, one of the nation’s strictest, outlaws the procedure at all stages of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape and incest.
“Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care,” the ad’s narrator says.
The ad then shows the patrolman approaching the vehicle: “Miss, I’m going to need you to step out of the vehicle,” he says, tapping the kit on the driver’s side door, “take a pregnancy test.”
The ad is scheduled to run on broadcast and cable television, along with digital platforms like YouTube, for two weeks, according to the PAC. The cost of the ad buy was not immediately available.
Alabama’s attorney general, Steve Marshall, a Republican, has clashed with the Justice Department and abortion assistance providers over whether the state has the authority to prosecute individuals or groups that help women leave the state to have the procedure.
Last month, Republicans introduced a bill in the Alabama House that would make it a misdemeanor to harbor or transport a minor to seek abortion services.
Mr. Newsom has emerged as a key surrogate for President Biden while harboring future White House ambitions of his own. He has regularly skirmished with G.O.P. governors and Republican-led states over abortion access, immigration, crime and other issues.
While Republicans have seized on crossings at the southern border in their messaging, Democrats have harnessed the issue of abortion-access after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. It helped propel Democratic candidates to key victories during the midterm elections in 2022 and in races last year.
In February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos were people with rights, casting a cloud of uncertainty over in vitro fertilization. The state later passed a law giving I.V.F. clinics criminal and civil immunity, but it did not address whether embryos have the legal status of human beings.
In another seismic ruling, the Arizona Supreme Court this month upheld an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions. The decision could have far-reaching consequences for women’s health care and election-year politics in the state, a critical political battleground.
Mr. Newsom said in a social media post at the time that California, which borders Arizona, would provide a refuge for women affected by the decision.
“Arizona wasn’t even a state — it was a territory — when this draconian abortion ban was passed,” he said. “That’s how extreme this is. California remains ready to help Arizonans access reproductive health care.”

Talent and Skills
/ report, dream destinations and mobility trends, decoding global talent 2024.
By Jens Baier , Orsolya Kovács-Ondrejkovic , Tobias Zimmermann , Pierre Antebi , Susan Gritzka , Sacha Knorr , Vinciane Beauchene , Carmen Marquez Castro , Zoë McFarlane , Anja Bates , Julie Bedard , and Ashish Garg
This is the first report in a series analyzing the work preferences of global talent in 2024 .
Ten years ago, we launched the Decoding Global Talent series of reports, excited to watch trends in the wide world of work. We never imagined how powerfully and rapidly various global forces—the pandemic, remote work, geopolitics, GenAI , and more—would disrupt work. Nevertheless, the turmoil of the past decade has had little impact on the enduring appeal of talent mobility.
Take Anne Granelli. We first interviewed her in 2014, when Anne, a biomedical researcher and native of Sweden, was living and working in New Delhi with her family, after a stint in Canada. “We really like the international atmosphere,” she shared then. “It’s a great opportunity to get different views and learn a lot.” We’ve continued to follow her story. Now 53, she is living and working in Dubai for a US-based medtech company. She recently observed, “Life is too short not to explore all the options.”
The options for working abroad are plentiful—as are the workers who are ready for new opportunities.
Employers and nations stand to benefit as well. But to reap the rewards, they must understand the preferences of mobile workers, which entails answering several key questions:
- How have the top target destinations shifted?
- Why do people aspire to move to specific countries?
- What can future employers and the governments of destination countries do to court global talent?
About the Decoding Global Talent Series
- The Decoding Global Talent series is the largest data source on the mobility preferences of workers globally. Our cumulative data set comprises almost 900,000 responses on where and how people want to work around the world.
- It is a collaboration of BCG, The Network, and The Stepstone Group.
- The current report explores trends in workforce mobility, including willingness to move abroad for work, and provides an updated ranking of top destination counties and cities.
- In this year’s survey, we explored a new dimension of global mobility: the reasons why respondents favor particular destinations. We asked survey participants how they perceive certain countries and why they think they would be happy in those destinations.
Where Do People Want to Go?
In 2023, Australia, which has been steadily rising through the ranks since we initiated this series, finally topped the list of desirable country destinations .
Australia became more attractive to respondents from Asian countries, and it rose in popularity among respondents from North America, Africa, and several European countries, including the UK and Ireland. Amid an economic boom as the world emerged from the worst stages of the pandemic, Australia has been attractive to talent from abroad, offering job opportunities, visas, and great quality of life.
Overall, though, the upper echelon of the rankings hasn’t changed much. Canada and the US are still top-three talent destinations because of the attractive economic opportunities they offer and because they are, simultaneously, English-speaking countries and global melting pots.
The most dramatic change we found in the rankings was Spain’s reemergence among the top ten, after becoming less attractive during the pandemic (the country was hit hard early on).
Why Do People Choose a Specific Country?
We dug deeper to find out how people who are willing to move for work choose a destination, leaning on definitions and rankings from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in its 2023 Indicators of Talent Attractiveness report.
We looked at extrinsic factors —characteristics of countries. We found that one consistent, primary consideration supersedes individual country brands: the quality of job opportunities. Nevertheless, a few countries benefited from another prominent consideration: quality of life .
And we looked at intrinsic factors —practical considerations related to the individuals themselves. Overall, speaking the primary language or languages of the destination country matters a lot, especially among respondents who favor English-speaking countries. Personal recommendations from acquaintances who have experience with the destination country make a difference, too, as does having a diaspora of the same nationality in the target destination.
What Can Employers and Governments Do?
People’s interest in moving abroad for work is significant, as are the benefits for employers and national and local economies. We recommend that businesses and governments target several key strategic areas and offer mobile talent advice along each step of the journey that they will be taking.
It’s no accident that we start with recommendations for employers...
But governments play a strong enabling role, so we have recommendations for them too...
- Forecast talent needs, and craft an international location strategy.
- Refine the EVP to resonate with new audiences.
- Boost international recruitment channels.
- Offer extensive relocation support.
- Onboard new arrivals—and their families.
- Ensure an inclusive and international work environment.
- Take a strategic approach to managing immigration.
- Boost the country brandwith a focus on jobs.
- Build bilateral partnerships and programs.
- Fast-track talent with critical skills.
- Make immigration user-friendly.
- Promote labor market inclusion.
- Promote societal inclusion.
People who have moved abroad for work—or aspire to—do so for a variety of practical reasons. But there’s also a sort of joie de vivre that takes hold among mobile talent. Patrick Byrne, a US-born lawyer now in Spain, shared with us, “I love the idea of adventure. Just the idea of living somewhere else, trying something new, experiencing another culture. That alone is an amazing thing.”
Employers and nations that tap into such positive energy, from the millions of workers with mobile aspirations, will gain a major competitive advantage and source of growth.
