Beats Pro Headphones by Dr. Dre from Monster (Playback 39)

Over the past several years, Monster has successfully moved beyond its beachhead in cables and accessories to build not one but two wide and popular lines of headphones—one line under the Monster name and the other under the new Beats by Dr. Dre brand (co-founded by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records). In the past, we’ve reviewed many Monster/Dr. Dre models, particularly enjoying the Monster Turbine Pro Copper and Miles Davis Tribute in-ear ‘phones, and the Beats By Dr. Dre Tour in-ear and Solo HD on`-ear models. Now, Monster has introduced the Beats Pro headphones, which are positioned as the most accurate model in the Dr. Dre product lineup.

PRODUCT CONCEPT

The Beats Pro tries to accomplish a lot. First off, it is said to deliver “pro-caliber sound” of “incredible accuracy”. It is also designed to be comfortable and have a seal that shuts out external sounds (in addition to providing a sealed-back design). The Beats Pros are also appropriate for a mobile environment with their rugged, folding design. At the same time they are said to have extreme power handling appropriate for pro gear. Monster has applied some effort to the styling of the Beats Pros and has also attended to several convenience features involving wiring and connectors.

The Beats Pros then are not some casual effort. But with so many goals on the agenda, do they succeed or are they simply a muddle of competing ideas?

EASE OF USE

The Beats Pros have a folding design, which allows you to swing the earcups up inside the headband. This reduces the total footprint on the headphone, although with large earcups as seen on the Beats Pro you still have a relatively thick package. Add to that the fact that these are truly full-size headphones with beefy aluminum earcups and a solid headband and you have headphones that are mobile but not particularly compact.

The other aspect of mobility for some is the ability to drive the headphone straight from a portable device. On that score I can say that the Beats Pros succeed completely. I used the iPhone 4 and had no problem driving the Pros to volumes that were too loud for comfort. I also used the Pros with several external headphone amps with success.

The input cable on the Beats Pro, befitting a Monster Cable product, is interesting and well done. The signal cord is mostly straight, with a short, coiled section at the amplifier end. The cord is about six feet long when fully stretched out, which I find to be a usable length yet one that doesn’t get in the way on an airplane or around my computer. At the same time, the coiled section means that when you extend the cable toward the full length, you’ll feel a progressively firmer tug to your head, not an abrupt snap that could break something. Monster also realizes that you may use a ¼” phone plug input at the desk, but want to connect with a mini-plug while on the road. No problem, because Monster has attached a mini-plug to ¼” phone plug adapter with a rubber link so that you always have both connectors at hand.

When it comes to sound isolation, the Beats Pros give you some reduction of external sounds, like many circumaural headphones with closed backs. So, they’re better than open back headphones but not as good as active noise cancellation devices or custom-fit in-ear models.

The odd thing is that Monster has pursued this moderate level of isolation with a supra-aural (on-ear not around-the-ear) design. What this means is that the Beats Pros put quite a bit of pressure on your outer ears. Your mileage may vary, but I would not rank this among the most comfortable headphones on the market. The rather dense foam in the earpads does seem to mold to the shape of your ears somewhat as time goes on, so the initial discomfort doesn’t get much worse after 30 or 45 minutes. But pressure is still pressure, so I definitely encourage a “try before you buy” attitude. No matter how good something sounds, if it hurts you won’t use it.

SONIC CHARACTER

So, how do the Beats Pros sound? Well, the simple version is “different.” I highlight this because there are a lot of headphones on the market, many of which sound like variations on common sonic themes, with more or less refinement and costing more or less money. That’s nice, assuming that one of those common sonic themes happens to meet your needs; in this case Monster has served up something different. It may or may not appeal, but at least it provides a true alternative.

The two themes I see most often involve characteristic frequency response curves. One such characteristic curve can be described as “n” shaped, where the headphone highlights the midrange and has some roll-off in the bass and treble. The AKG K702, many Grados and the B&W P5 all fall roughly into this category.

The second theme can be described as involving a “u” shaped response. Bass and treble are elevated to a degree, relative to the midrange. The Beyerdynamic DT 990s and the Denon AT-H5000s clearly fit in this category, with the Sennheiser HD 650 being a somewhat less obvious example.

Of course there are headphones that try to offer wide range frequency response and genuinely balanced sound, but there are fewer of these than one might think. This might seem odd, but since headphones remove some of the cues we’re accustomed to in normal live or speaker-based listening situations (primarily because they convey less spatial or imaging information and less bass impact), a headphone designer could reasonably want to employ some artistry to compensate and thus to persuade the listener that the sounds on offer are more “realistic.”

In the case of Monster’s Beats Pros, we have what might be called a “tilted” response curve rather than the more commonly encountered “n” or “u”-shaped curves. The bass is elevated, the midrange is pretty flat and the treble is slightly rolled off. Basically, output declines somewhat as frequency rises.

The first thing that strikes you when listening to the Beats Pros is their elevated level of bass output. In the range from say 70 Hz to perhaps 150 Hz, where bass guitar, drum and synth have plenty of action, the Beats Pros have strong output—stronger than live music typically would have. If we’re talking about reproduction of acoustic bass instruments, the output difference is big, not small.

For example, on my Jack Johnson bass test (tracks 7-9 from On and On ), you hear the rhythm section loudly if not clearly. There is a lot of warmth and bass power on display. At the same time, you know there is a bump in the response curve because the clarity and definition of these instruments is blurred.

That said, many headphones that sound “clear” also have somewhat diminished bass. If a sense of warmth is key for you, with bass/mid/treble all present and accounted for on every track, the Beats Pros may trump many a headphone that, in a strict technical sense, might be more accurate. The fact that the Pro’s bass might seem a bit imbalanced and less than perfectly defined at times becomes secondary because their inherent bass warmth allows you to focus on the overall flow of the music.

This view is supported by the evenly delivered midrange of the Beats Pros. As I’ve noted before, many headphones that strive for even top-to-bottom balanced across actually struggle to deliver critical midrange frequencies evenly. Often, there can be bumps and dips in midrange response that make voices in particular sound a little off. In the case of the Beats Pros, however, the ‘phones offered much greater midrange smoothness and freedom from uneven sound than is common. Through the Pros, voices and acoustic instruments like guitars sound whole and natural.

The treble on the Beats Pros is smooth and clean which is not the norm with bass-heavy headphones, where it is much more common to see slightly upturned treble response. With the Pros, however, the opposite is the case, in that their mid-treble response is slightly diminished in level, which makes some instruments sound sweeter than they might in reality. In addition, this kind of presentation means there is a somewhat reduced sense of air and space around the players. Fortunately, the Beats Pros do an admirable job of conveying micro-detail, which suggests they have extended high frequency response, though this response sounds as if it gradually rolls off at the upper end of the treble region.

BOTTOM LINE

• Consider this product if: Bass warmth and power are essential to your sense of music, yet you’d like smooth midrange and treble.

•Look further if: you live for acoustically accurate bass; you wear your headphones for extended periods during the day

•Summing Up: For the non-audiophile, the Beats Pros may sound more right and interfere less with the music than many other headphones—even ones that, in a textbook sense, are theoretically more accurate. If big bass is what you want, the Beats Pros offer an attractive alternative to other punchy headphones that tend, more often than not, to add bright, sizzly treble response to the mix.

The Beats Studio Buds serves as the company’s entry-level true wireless model. It comes with an all-new design, Bluetooth 5.2 and active noise cancellation , a first for wireless Beats buds. This tiny pair of buds also has a non-Apple chipset that was designed to play nice with iOS and Android, while leveraging high audio and ANC performance.

Critically acclaimed and still popular, the Beats Powerbeats Pro remains a top seller and one of the best sports headphones money can buy. It helped set the standard for lengthy battery life on wireless earbuds, generating nearly double the playtime of the AirPods Pro . Signature brand hallmarks are nailed to a T as well, from the boom-filled soundstage to the ear-hook design that has become synonymous with the Powerbeats line.

These two pairs of wireless earbuds might look different from one another, but they share many similarities and were designed for different audiences. The question is: which is better? Read on to see whether the Studio Buds or Powerbeats Pro is the better buy overall.

The Beats Studio Buds costs $149. We don’t expect it to go on sale anytime soon, especially since it just launched; still, if you want to pick up a pair, it's available on Amazon .   

Originally launched at $249, the Beats Powerbeats Pro has seen numerous markdowns over the past year with several online retailers selling the product for as low as $145.

Both products are reasonably affordable and deciding between the two will likely come down to preference.

Beats Studio Buds vs. Beats Powerbeats Pro: Design

There’s no denying that Beats creates some of the hottest-looking headphones and earbuds out there. We like the more striking Studio Buds earpieces due to their unique and discrete form. You’ll still draw an audience when rocking these outside; the iconic B logo makes sure of that. Build quality is solid and the buds can sustain scratches and scuffs well. IPX4 certification also gives these beauties sweat and water-resistant protection.

The Powerbeats Pro comes with the same IPX4 certification and is built from most of the same materials. It does have a more matte, soft-touch finish, plus the multifunctional button is circular and flush compared to the Studio Buds’ elongated and protruding button. Size is vastly different, with the Powerbeats Pro being longer and wider. You can choose from eight different bold and bright color options, whereas the Studio Buds currently offers three.

Regarding the charging cases, it's a case of which do you prefer: huge and highly protective or compact and convenient? One look at the photo above should have you leaning towards the latter because the Powerbeats Pro case is freaking massive, and heavy. The Studio Buds case is a crossbreed of the AirPods Pro and Sony WF-SP800N cases, and cooler to carry around, not to mention lighter. 

We only see one benefit to the Powerbeats Pro’s case: it can take beatings. The Studio Buds case will do its job powering and storing the buds, but the magnet employed to keep the lid close is weak.

Beats Studio Buds vs. Beats Powerbeats Pro: Comfort and hit

If you’re someone who fears dropping their earbuds down a sewer grate, the Powerbeats Pro offers you peace of mind. It’s all about the ear hooks, a vital component of the Powerbeats series that was kept intact for this true wireless iteration, and one that provides excellent stability no matter the activity. We’re talking about performing burpees and cartwheels with the buds remaining on your head. The angled sound port allows for easy insertion, but also applies pressure to the concha, causing some discomfort after workouts or within an hour of wear.

The Studio Buds design is comfortable too, except it features a new ergonomically tilted acoustic nozzle with laser-cut micro-vent that decreases pressure on the eardrum. However, when it comes to preventing slippage, the standard in-ear design can't compete with the Powerbeats Pro’s much more secure wrap-around design.

Beats Studio Buds vs. Beats Powerbeats Pro: Controls

The Studio Buds' controls are more intelligible, while the Powerbeats Pro’s controls are more practical. We favor the Studio Buds because of its dual voice activation. Saying “Hey Siri ” or “Hey Google” will fire up either AI bot on their respective platform (iOS or Apple), getting you quick and accurate results. The mics do a fantastic job of registering commands and vocals. There's also a multifunction button on each bud to handle playback, call management, and listening modes, and it's highly responsive to presses.

One thing the Powerbeats Pro has that the Studio Buds doesn’t is onboard volume controls. There are rockers located at the top of each bud to easily raise or lower volume. A multifunction button is available to perform the same functions as on the Studio Buds's MF button. “Hey Siri” performs equally well, and while Google Assistant does work when using these buds with an Android device, the “Hey Google” function doesn’t.

Beats Studio Buds vs. Beats Powerbeats Pro: Sound quality

Music lovers seeking an adrenaline rush during workouts will prefer the Powerbeats Pro’s bass-forward signature, which is nicely balanced and doesn’t distort sound like older Beats models. Lows are impactful and well represented when listening to tracks from contemporary music genres like EDM and hip-hop. These buds also produce prominent vocals on acoustic tracks. With lows being emphasized, highs don’t receive much attention.

For critical listeners who want to hear imperfections and subtle nuances in recordings, the Studio Buds are more sonically appetizing. The 8.2mm, dual-element diaphragm driver and custom designed transducers help produce spacious, and well-balanced audio, while managing the complexities presented by active noise cancellation. That just means you’ll enjoy the same high-quality sound when listening with ANC on. You can expect some amazing clarity, detail, and range on most tracks. 

Bass won’t hit as hard as it does on the Powerbeats Pro, but there is enough to stimulate toe-taps or head-nods when vibing out to rhythmic selections.

As for spatial audio , neither set of earbuds has the full head-tracking support that you'd get on the AirPods Pro. Still, both can play 3D-like songs from Apple Music, and will automatically enable the feature where Dolby Atmos -supporting music is available.

Beats Studio Buds vs. Beats Powerbeats Pro: Special features and apps

Beats went all out to stock the Studio Buds with premium features, specifically active noise cancellation and ambient listening. Noise neutralization is adequate for use in moderately loud environments like shopping centers and train stations. 

We estimate the buds are capable of silencing about 75% of ambient noise, though high-frequency sounds do make their way onto the soundstage. Luckily, they aren’t distracting enough to pull you away from whatever is playing on your smartphone. The Transparency mode needs a lot of work, but it should suffice for quick and up-close interactions with people.   

The Studio Buds give you access to some well-known features tied to iOS, but not all of them. Audio personalization can be achieved by going into the Settings and selecting from over 20 different presets. Download the System Equalizer Shortcut app and you will have a shortcut to do the same on Android. Headphone Accommodations is another iOS-centric feature that is available to tailor sound to your hearing.

Wireless is where the Studio Buds receives a major boost, as Beats developed its own chipset to operate equally well on iOS and Android. These buds use Bluetooth 5.2 to deliver instant connectivity, no matter the platform, and offer a reliable range (40 feet) to enjoy wireless listening while your smartphone charges in the opposite room. This is also the first Beats release to support Find My in iOS and Find My Device on Android, which use your last known location to find lost buds, along with Google Fast Pair to expedite the pairing process on Android devices.   

There are some people out there who may opt for the Powerbeats Pro’s exclusive software perks. With the H1 chip at the helm, these buds grant you auto switching between iCloud-registered devices, audio sharing between two Apple or  Beats headphones , and Siri Announce Notifications. Pairing to iOS/macOS machines is also a bit faster on the Powerbeats Pro. 

Firmware updates can be pushed through on either set of buds and new features could be introduced to the Studio Buds and Powerbeats Pro via iOS 15 ; we just don’t know if they’ll be optimized for the H1 chip and Beats’ new processing architecture.

Beats Studio Buds vs. Beats Powerbeats Pro: Call quality

The Powerbeats Pro has always impressed us with its call quality, nearly matching the AirPods Pro. Even without ANC technology, the beamforming mics block out a good amount of ambient noise during calls. This allows for loud and clear conversations both indoors and outdoors. Wind resistance is the only true weakness; it becomes difficult to communicate in drafty conditions.

It is shocking to see the Studio Buds underperform as a calling headset, especially since Beats stuffed some strong specs into the model. We received complaints about muffling when taking calls outside. Voices sounded clearer when chatting in quiet environments, but cutout was persistent no matter the location. Wind only made matters worse.

Winner:  Beats Powerbeats Pro

Beats Studio Buds vs. Beats Powerbeats Pro: Battery life

You’re getting sufficient playtimes with either product. Based on our testing and rated battery life, the Powerbeats Pro is the longer-lasting option. A full charge earns you 9 hours of use, which is really 8 hours when factoring in volume, heavy streaming, and calls. The Studio Buds are rated at 8 hours, but that number drops to about 6.5 to 7 hours when taking those same variables into account; ANC decreases playtimes to about 4.5 to 5 hours.

An unsung feature on that is available on most AirPods and Beats models is Fast Fuel charging. The Studio Buds have a stronger version of it and can get you 1.5 hours of playback on a 5-minute charge, while the Powerbeats Pro gets you 1 hour in the charge time. Optimized Battery Charging is also available on each model and learns your daily charging routine to preserve battery health.

The charging cases hold the same battery life when fully charged: 24 hours. It decreases to 15 hours on the Studio Buds when ANC is enabled. Wireless charging, meanwhile, is MIA and remains exclusive to current AirPods models.

Beats Studio Buds vs. Beats Powerbeats Pro: Overall winner

Beats knew it had to go in a different direction with the Studio Buds. The leaks and rumors suggested we were in for a  treat, but we didn’t expect this lower-cost pair to be better on the whole than its fitness-centric sibling. 

To build an entirely new chipset for platform neutrality is an ambitious move that pays off, giving both Android and iOS owners the same rewarding user experience. Even though the bass levels are toned down, sound is spacious and detailed, plus we like that you can still enjoy spatial audio despite no H1 chip. Noise cancellation is also tenable for blocking out common distractions and much better than we anticipated for the price.

Two years on the market and the Powerbeats Pro is still a go-to for avid exercisers. You’re getting signature Beats audio with emphasized bass that rattles your eardrums, along with the ear hooks to keep each earpiece in place during workouts. Battery life still ranks highly, even if it's no longer among the best in its class.

Unfortunately for the Powerbeats Pro, it just isn't as suitable for casual listening, due in large part to the lack of lasting comfort. With the newer, smaller buds proving easier on the ear, while making significant improvements in sound and platform support, it's the Beats Studio Buds that can claim to be Beats' best true wireless earbuds overall.

How do you charge them?

To charge your Beats Studio Buds, place them in the charging case. When you need to charge both the earbuds and the case, place the earbuds in the case and connect the case to a power source with the USB-C cable that's included with your Beats Studio Buds. You can also charge the case without the earbuds. (Note: USB-C power adapter sold separately).

How do you turn them on and off?

Beats Studio Buds automatically power on when they are removed from the case, and power off when placed back in the case with the lid closed.

Can you control your music?

Beats Studio Buds feature a multi-function button on each earbud. Press once to play or pause, twice to skip forward, or three times to skip backward.

How do you control noise cancelling?

Hold the multi-function button down to toggle between Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) and Transparency mode.

How do I improve the comfort, stability, and sound quality of your Beats Studio Buds?

Beats earphones come with several sets of eartips. Choose the pair that's most comfortable and provides the best sound experience for you. If your earphones don't already have eartips attached, choose a set of eartips and attach them. Then gently insert the eartip into your ear. You can adjust the eartip until it feels secure. To remove the eartip from your ear, twist the earphone gently and pull it away from your ear.

How do I activate Siri or other voice assistants?

On Apple devices, you can activate Siri hands-free just by saying “Hey Siri”. Or, change the function of the multi-function button to activate your voice assistant within your iOS settings. On Android, download the Beats app to change the function of the multi-function button to activate the default voice assistant on your device.

How do I configure the multi-function button?

You can configure the multi-function button to either toggle ANC modes or activate voice assistant. To do this in iOS, tap on the product icon in Control Center and select the “Press and hold” menu to choose your preferred function for each earbud. To do this on Android, download the Beats app from Google Play. Once your product is paired in the app, select the “Press and hold” menu in the product page to choose your preferred function for each earbud.

How long does the battery last?

Beats Studio Buds can provide up to 8 hours of listening time with ANC turned off, or up to 5 hours of listening time with ANC turned on. The case holds two additional charges for a combined total of 24 hours with ANC off, or 15 hours with ANC on.

Do they have a microphone?

Beats Studio Buds have multiple microphones on each earbud enabling high-quality call performance. Each earbud has 2 microphones dedicated to ANC and 1 dedicated to voice pickup.

How do I pair with my iPhone?

Beats Studio Buds are ready to pair right out of the box. On iPhone running the latest iOS, simply open the lid of the case, hold near unlocked phone, and follow on-screen instructions.

How do I pair with my Android device?

On Android, you can pair your product in a single tap using Google Fast Pair. In order to access the feature, you must have Android 6.0 or later, location enabled, and access to Google Play Services. If you meet those requirements, simply open the lid of the case, hold near unlocked phone, and follow on-screen instructions. You can also pair your product in the standard Bluetooth menu.

How do I pair with my Mac or with another device that uses Bluetooth?

Make sure that you turned on Bluetooth on your Mac or other device. With the case lid open, hold your Beats Studio Buds next to your Mac or other device. Press and hold the system button on the charging case until the LED blinks. Open the Bluetooth menu on your Mac or other device. For example, on your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. In the list of discovered Bluetooth devices, tap or click your Beats Studio Buds.

How do I pair with additional Bluetooth devices?

To pair to additional devices, place the earbuds in the case with the lid open. Then hold down the small circular button until the LED begins to flash. Beats Studio Buds are now in pairing mode and can be paired to any standard Bluetooth device.

Can I wear just one earbud?

Yes, you can use either earbud independently.

How waterproof / water resistant are these?

Beats Studio Buds are rated IPX4, which means they are resistant to sweat and water splashing from any direction. The case is not sweat or water resistant.

How do I keep my product up to date?

Software updates will occasionally be made available to enable new features or improve the product experience. These ‘silent’ updates are automatically enabled when connected to an Apple device. To stay up to date on an Android device, download the Beats app from Google Play.
