Bicol is the adventure capital of the Philippines, and is well known for its active volcanoes, tranquil whale sharks, secret beaches and spicy food. The destination is popular with Filipinos but fairly unknown to foreign tourists, so this travel guide acts as an introduction to the beautiful region of Bicol Philippines.

Where is Bicol located in the Philippines

The Bicol region is based in the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago.

Bicol is a region made up of six provinces , Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon and the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate, and has its own language, Bikol , which is highly influenced by Spanish.

The largest city is  Legazpi , the capital of Albay and the Bicol Region is bounded by the Lamon Bay to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Sibuyan Sea and Ragay Gulf to the west.

The northernmost Bicol provinces of Camarines Norte and  Camarines Sur , are bordered to the west by the province of Quezon Philippines.

How to get to Bicol Philippines

Bicol can be reached by road or air. There are two main airports in Bicol, one in Naga, Naga Airport (WNP) and the other in Legazpi City, Legazpi Airport (LGP).

Both of these airports are serviced by major domestic carriers, including Philippines Airlines , Cebu Pacific and Cebgo airlines .

There are multiple flights a day between Bicol and other parts of the Philippines such as Cebu and Manila which is only a one hour flight away.

The distance by road from Bicol to Manila is 293 kilometres or 182 miles. The journey takes 8 to 10 hours by public transport from Manila, Cubao and Sampaloc. 

Travel by private car takes about 6 to 7 hours from Manila to Legazpi City Philippines.

Best Time to Visit Bicol Region

As the provinces in Bicol Philippines are an underrated tourist destination there is no peak season (yet!) so it’s there’s no need to worry about avoiding the crowds.

Bicol Philippines has an all year round tropical climate , however the wet season is from July to January, when typhoons can be common.

April is the driest month of the year so a great time to visit, especially if you want to go island hopping in the Caramoan Islands .

Best Places to Visit in Bicol Philippines

Legazpi city in albay philippines.

The best tourist spot in Bicol is the majestic  Mount Mayon , which is found in Legazpi City , the capital of Albay. 

Mt Mayon is 2,462 meters high and is the  world’s most perfectly formed volcano .

The active volcano can be seen from nearly anywhere in the city and most activities in Legazpi revolve around Mayon Volcano. Including hiking , ziplining and quad biking down the volcano !

Legazpi City is also home to Cagsawa Ruins , a 16th century church tower, and  Sumlang Lake , a water-sports haven with incredible views of Mount Mayon, both the ruins and the lake are popular Bicol tourist attractions.

Donsol in Bicol

Donsol is famous for being the whale shark capital of the world, and these huge fish can be seen all year round.

Boats leave daily from the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center, so if swimming with whale sharks is on your bucket list Donsol is the place to do it.

Other popular activities in Donsol include a firefly river tour , and scuba diving fun dives .

Naga City Camarines Sur Philippines

Whilst the rest of Bicol is famed for its nature and adventure, Naga City Philippines is the religious centre of Bicol.

Home to one of the most popular shrines in the Philippines, the Penafrancia Basilica Minore, is patterned after the Spanish shrine and is often visited by pilgrims and devotees.

Caramoan Island in Camarines Sur

The Caramoan Islands are the Philippines secret paradise.

This Asian hidden gem in Camarines Sur is often dubbed the next El Nido .

Spend your days, island hopping around the peninsula in search of white sand coves and limestone rocks and even look out for the filming location of the hit US TV show, Survivor .

Camarines Norte Philippines

The most popular spot in the Camarines Norte, is the  Catanduanes Islands , north of Luzon, which are a favourite amongst local surfers.

They are home to some of the most beautiful Bicol beaches, including Mamangal Beach , a completely untouched spot of paradise in the Catanduanes.

Another popular spot in the Camarines Norte is the city of Daet .

There are several good places to stay in Bicol, here are my recommendations for the different Bicol places to visit.

What is Bicol known for? Bicolano Food

The Bicol province is renowned for its spicy cuisine. Most Bicolano dishes contain, sili (hot chilli pepper) and gata (coconut milk) such as the most popular savoury dish, Bicol Express .

Locally, the Bicol Express is known as gulay na lada , and is made from ground pork, sili , baby shrimp, onion, garlic and other spices cooked in coconut milk.

Another popular Bicolano food dish is Pinangat , made from green  gabi  (taro) leaves wrapped around small pieces of fish, shrimp and/or pork.

Both dishes can be served with a vegetarian Bicol favourite, Laing, which is a chopped leafy green vegetable.

As for deserts, Legazpi is famous for its hot pink Chilli ice cream and Pili nut candies.

Festivals in Bicol City Philippines

Bicol is known for having some of the best festivals in the whole of the Philippines.

Some are religious, but others showcase the uniqueness of the Bicol Region.

• In April, Masbate City holds the only rodeo in Asia, Rodeo Masbateño .
• For the duration of May, Albay celebrates, Magayon Festival a month long festival which honours the beauty of Mount Mayon Volcano, which overlooks the city of Legazpi.
• Also in May, is the 8 day long Sarung Banggi Festival , a colourful religious celebration dedicated to Potenciano V Gregorio’s love song ‘Sarung Banggi’.
• During August, Legazpi City holds the Ibalong Festival, decidated to the folk story of Ibalong, where people dance in the streets wearing masks and costumes that represent the heroes and villains in the story.
• In September, Naga City holds one of the busiest festivals in Bicol, attracting more than six million people a year. The Peñafrancia Festival is held to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
• During Christmas, Naga Bicol also holds the Kamundagan Festival which includes lighting the Plaza Quezon Grandstand’s Christmas Village, and includes different fantasy themed Christmas shows held each night until Christmas Eve.

The legendary bell tower is actually the remains of Cagsawa Church, a Franciscan church that was rebuilt in the year 1636. It was destroyed and buried underground after Mayon Volcano’s most violent eruption in history in 1814 when more than 1,200 people died.

Next up, we’ll be exploring the beautiful Paguriran Island and Lagoon of Sorsogon! The island is known for its world-class white sand beach where tourists can freely swim and relax all they want. And not only that, there’s a sandbar connecting the beach all the way to the famous lagoon that gives out the amazing vibes of Palawan!

6. Burias Island 

Ah, and there it is. If you really want to see the unspoiled beauty of nature at its finest, then I suggest you visit Burias Island. This scenic getaway spot is one of the three (3) major islands in Masbate and features a majestic beachscape with white sands and turquoise waters.

Of course, since we’re here at Bicol, we obviously shouldn’t waste the chance to enjoy and admire the beauty of the Mayon Volcano. Another must-visit and rising tourist attraction here is the Ligñon Hill Nature Park. It is one of the best places to simply embrace the cool mountain breeze, enjoy a breath of fresh air, and be mesmerized by Mayon.

8. Tikling Island

Have you ever seen or even heard about a pink-colored beach? Well, you’re not alone because I was also intrigued by one of Sorsogon’s most popular tourist spots, Tikling Island! The fine sands of the island are pinkish-white in color because of the scattered red corals all over the beach.

9. Caramoan Islands

Covering an extremely huge area of 4,000 hectares composed of beautiful limestone forests, white sand beaches, and crystal clear waters, Caramoan Island is indeed up there with Palawan, Siargao, and Boracay as some of the Philippines’ finest beach destinations.

15. Barcelona Church and Ruins

Finally, the best way to end our Bicol adventures is by dropping by the famous Barcelona Church and Ruins of Sorsogon. It is one of the main attractions in Sorsogon that allows tourists to take a look back at our country’s rich and colorful history. According to history, the Spaniards claimed this entire community in the 1800s and named it Barcelona, in honor of the capital town of Spain. Its cuisine is one of the most popular in the country, too!  Known for the sizzling taste due to the abundant use of chili, several Bicolano dishes have become popular all over the country.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Bicol Region summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. 1 | Try the adventures around Mount Mayon

Province:  Albay

Not only is it regarded as sacred in Philippine mythology, the beautiful Mount Mayon with its perfect cone is also a great destination for various activities such as hiking, camping, ATV riding, and tours.  It was declared a natural park in 2000 and is one of the protected areas in the region.  It is home to hundreds of species of flowers and trees including Nepenthes ventricosa, a near-threatened species of pitcher plant.  Mount Mayon is also inhabited by hundreds of fauna including the vulnerable Philippine Brown Deer, Philippine Warty Pig, Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox, Philippine Eagle-owl, Banded Pygmy Tree Frog, the nearly-threatened Luzon Bleeding Heart, and the and critically-endangered Philippine Cockatoo.

Mount Mayon may be one of the most destructive volcanoes in the country but its beauty, mystery, and abundance in flora and fauna keep attracting the attention of tourists.

2 | Revel in the refreshing atmosphere of Quitinday Falls and Underground River

Palawan isn’t the only province in the Philippines with an underground river .  You can find one in Albay too!  Although only about 150 meters in length, Quitinday Falls and Underground River is beautifully adorned with columns, stalactites, stalagmites, and rock formations.  It has a cliff where one can jump off into the gorge and enjoy the refreshing water.

3 | See the attractions in Daraga Town

Cagsawa Ruins is one of the most photographed spots in Albay and is found in the town of Daraga.  The ruins are the remnants of the 16th century Franciscan church that was destroyed when Mayon erupted in 1814, its most destructive so far.  After the eruption of Mayon, Daraga Church, officially Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Parish Church (also Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church), was built to replace the church of Cagsawa.  The church is of Churrigueresque architectural style and is mostly made of volcanic rocks.  This centuries-old church was declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2007.

Not too far from Daraga Church is Ligñon Hill Nature Park, the second highest point in Albay next to Mayon.  It is a prehistoric cinder cone mainly composed of dolerite and basaltic volcanic rocks.  The hill offers the panoramic view of Mayon and Legazpi City with its coin-operated telescopes.  Restaurants and shops are also found in the park.

Dubbed as the Emerging Paradise of the Pacific, Caramoan Island has been attracting the attention of tourists with its unspoilt natural attractions such as white and pink sand beaches, lakes, caves, coves, lagoons, and limestone forests blessed with rich biodiversity of flora and fauna.  Several editions of the reality show Survivor have even taken place in Caramoan therefore pushing the island to popularity even outside the country.

7 | Enjoy Naga City

Naga City is located in the center of Bicol Peninsula thus the nickname the Heart of Bicol.  Apart from being a business district, it is also a medical, educational, cultural, and religious center.  It is also nicknamed as the Pilgrim City due to a number of churches and other religious institutions in the city.  

Due to its proximity to Mount Isarog and other natural attractions around it such as falls and springs, Naga City is also a gateway to several exciting activities like ATV rides and hiking.

Province: Catanduanes

Fancy the rolling hills just like in Batanes ?  Well, you can see it in Catanduanes .  Hiking to the top takes between 20 to 30 minutes through a forested trail.  Some parts of the trail can be muddy and slippery but Binurong Point offers scenic views of the sea, the greenery around, and the magnificent sunrise when you hike early in the morning.

10 | Relax at the beaches in Virac

Virac is blessed with pristine beaches ideal for relaxing and spending time with family and friends.  Amenia Beach is calm and perfect for kids who want to swim and play in the water.  Mamangal Beach is a good choice for those who want to see life underwater.  Beaches perfect for lounging are Balite, Batag, and Marilima as they are usually peaceful.

11 | Swim with whale sharks in Donsol

Province: Sorsogon

Apart from Oslob in Cebu , the other place to swim with whale sharks in the Philippines is Donsol, Sorsogon.  What’s great about swimming with whale sharks in Donsol is the effort the people put in to protect these gentle giants from over-tourism and from being hurt or altering their natural tendencies.

12 | Visit the top attractions in Matnog

Matnog is a coastal town in the southernmost part of Luzon Island.  Facing Northern Samar , its sea port is one of the busiest in the region.  It is blessed with stunning natural attractions such as Subic Beach and Tikling Island with their pink sand and pristine waters.  Subic Beach has cottages to accommodate tourists but Tikling Island is unspoilt and free of any type of accommodation.  Not too far away from Subic Beach is Juag Fish Sanctuary where you can snorkel and see the aquatic creatures in a protected environment.

13 | Explore Mount Bulusan

At 1565 MASL, Mount Bulusan is home to several hot springs, lakes, and a diverse range of flora and fauna.  Day hike is possible but staying the night to explore makes for a more rewarding trip given the breathtaking views of the area early in the morning.

14 | Marvel at the natural beauty of Masbate

Province: Masbate

Consisting of three major islands namely Masbate , Ticao , and Burias , the province of Masbate is blessed with natural attractions such as white sand beaches, unspoilt islands, and pristine waters inhabited by a diversity of marine species.  Palani White Beach and Porta Vega Beach are popular for their white sand and coast lined with palm trees.  To see marine life, don’t miss Halea Nature Park, Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary, and Manta Bowl.  Other attractions you shouldn’t miss are Animasola Island, Pawa Mangrove Park, Tinalisayan Island, and Sombrero Island.

2 | Bob Marlin Restaurant and Grill

Bob Marlin Restaurant is one of the best restaurants in Naga City specializing in Bicolano cuisine.  It is most known for its crispy pata which has been recognized as one of the in the Philippines based on the poll conducted by the Department of Tourism.  Located in the business district of Naga City, the restaurant has a homey ambience and laid back vibes perfect for spending time with family and friends over good food.  Other dishes to try are dinuguang baka, kare kare, laing, pinanga, and Bicol express.

3 | 1st Colonial Grill

Originating from Albay, 1st Colonial Grill serves Filipino cuisine, particularly Bicolano dishes.  It claims to be the home of the first sili (chili pepper) ice cream in the country.  Additionally, the restaurant has come up with other ice cream flavors representing the region such as pili, latik, pineapple, cacao, carmelado, and tinutungan na bigas (toasted rice).  Aside from ice cream, dishes to try include tinapa fried rice, buko chopsuey, and pork sisig.

Geewan is a carinderia-style restaurant where you can point (turo-turo style) the dish you want among the dishes being displayed.  It specializes in Bicolano cuisine although it serves other Filipino dishes as well.  The restaurant is affordably-priced which is perfect for students, budget travellers, and those who are with a large group.  Don’t miss their kare kare, pinangat, lechon kawali, and lechon paksiw.

5 | Red Platter

Red Platter is a semi-fine dining restaurant located in Naga City’s most popular dining destination.  It serves an array of cuisines including Asia and Western in addition to Bicolano.  Customers review about their kare kare but their halo halo, buko pandan, cakes, and other sweet treats are equally good.

6 | Sibid-Sibid

A quaint restaurant in Legazpi City, Sibid-Sibid serves Filipino cuisine and is the perfect place to go to for your seafood cravings.  Its bamboo and wood interiors complete its provincial vibe.  Their bestsellers include Tuna Bicol Express and Seafood Mix however you have to try their chicken dishes too since they only use native and free range chicken.

7 | Small Talk Cafe

The top restaurant in Legazpi City based on customer reviews, Small Talk Cafe boasts of its Bicol-fusion cooking that attracts many tourists including VIPs and celebrities in Philippine government and entertainment.  It’s been featured in print, TV, and online.  From laing pasta, their arsenal of fusion dishes increased over the years to include Mayon Stuffed Pizza, Pasta Pinangat, and Pizza Bicolana among others.  The food is reasonably-priced and with their nice ambience and good service, Small Talk Cafe is truly one of the dining spots you shouldn’t miss while in the city.

Not only does it have a cozy and nice ambience, the food is affordable too.  With a buffet dining for less than P300 ($6 USD), you can eat Bicolano dishes to your heart’s content albeit the choices are limited.  Nevertheless, the taste makes up for the limited choices.  Their bestsellers include Crispy Shrimp and Bicol Express.

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

• Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Bicol Region, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Bicol Region or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

The resort has its own store where you can buy food and drinks.

Freshen up and return to Bulusan town proper to catch a jeep to Gubat then another jeep bound for Sorsogon.

Start early for a trip to Matnog. Bring some food and drinks with you for the journey and island hopping. Make your way to the terminal and catch a jeep bound for Matnog. Fare is approximately P90. After alighting at Matnog, head over to the port to rent a boat for island hopping. The day trip costs around P1,800 for up to 10 people. Places you’ll visit include Subic Beach (known for its pinkish and powdery sand), Juag Lagoon, and Tikling Island.

The highlight for me was Subic Beach. There are more people now compared to the first time I visited several years ago. However, this didn’t detract from the beauty of the beach. You can buy feed for the fishes during your stop at Juag Lagoon.

It’s possible to end your trip sooner or add another day to see the whale sharks in Donsol. Going to Donsol doesn’t guarantee you’ll see a whale shark. • If you’re taking public transportation, you have to plan your trip around the schedule of buses and jeeps. The last trip back to Sorsogon, Legazpi, or other towns is around 4 pm. Try to be back early at the terminal or stop.
• I used Sorsogon as the base for day trips to other parts of the province. I would recommend doing the same because you’ll have more dining and accommodation options. Legazpi Airport is just around an hour away if you’re flying in and out of this part of Bicol. You’re also in a transportation hub which makes it easier to visit other places. You reduce your travel time by around an hour if you plan to visit the destinations in the province compared to coming all the way from Legazpi.
• Booking a tour through an agency is a convenient option because you share the expenses with others. You could arrange your accommodation on your own and book tours to places you want to visit. This is a possible alternative for groups of at least 2-3 people. 
• You could visit more places in the region if you rent a tricycle or car for the day. However, this is an option worth taking if traveling with a group or at least with one other person. The tricycle is an affordable option for day trips if you’re traveling alone.

A variety of factors will affect your budget when you travel to both Legazpi and Sorsogon, such as if you’re traveling alone because you’ll have no one to share expenses with, booking a tricycle or hiring a car, renting a boat for island hopping, where you eat, where you stay, and the activities you plan to do.

A mid-range budget of P10,500 each for 5 days and 4 nights covers accommodation, food, activities, transportation, and fees shared with at least one other person. With this budget you could go to Bulusan Lake, go on an ATV ride to the black lava wall, charter a private vehicle (car or tricycle), see some of Legazpi’s famous sites, island hop in Matnog, and others.

BEST TIME TO VISIT BICOL

Like any other place in the Philippines there are two kinds of seasons-  the dry season from November to April  and the  wet season from May to October.  

The best time to visit Bicol tourist spots is during dry season, especially from  December  to  February  when temperatures are much cooler and touring will most likely not be interrupted by rains and will not be really hot going around.

Bicol Tourist Spots And Things to do in Bicol

We will start our list with our favorite one in the list of Bicol tourist spots Calaguas Island in North of Bicol Province. We will continue with Naga, Caramoan and going to the South of Bicol.

1. CALAGUAS ISLAND, CAMARINES DEL NORTE

Calaguas Island is called the little Boracay. You just get to Calaguas Beach and you feel in paradise. Those colors in the water a long beach with white sand.

Avoiding high season and weekends you will be calm and quiet in Calaguas Beach. Enjoying Calaguas Beach was our favorite in the list of things to do in Calaguas Island.

2. Naga City

Naga City is located in  Camarines Sur  and it’s usually a stopover before going to Caramoan since there are daily flights coming from Manila to  Naga Airport .

We passed by coming from Calaguas Island and after visiting Burias Island. We will discover our favorite Naga tourist spots . We really loved the place and it reminded us to Angeles City in Pampanga where we are based.

3. CARAMOAN

Caramoan has an amazing island hopping. You can choose whole day trip visiting 4 islands for  2500 PHP . Or short trip  1500 PHP  enjoying beaches with huge rock cliffs similar to  El Nido , in Palawan.

We just stayed swimming, taking pictures for long time since we loved it. And we only saw 2-3 boats doing island hopping in Caramoan that day. Beautiful beaches, sand bar and the amazing limestones.

4. SUBIC BEACH IN SORSOGON

Subic Beach is popular because of the Pink colors in the sand with blue waters. You can get there in the island hopping in Matnog . And we totally recommend to spend the day in this beach for us is one of the best beaches in Sorsogon .

5. DONSOL, SORSOGON

Donsol is one of the most popular Bicol tourist spots because of the Whale Sharks. In South Luzon in Bicol Province and close to Legazpi you can do this activity.

When you visit Donsol, you shouldn’t miss diving and swimming with the whale sharks. Don’t worry because they are friendly creatures. Just don’t do anything that will stress or scare them.

6. MAYON VOLCANO, LEGAZPI

Mayon volcano is one of the best things to do in Bicol. It is an active, perfect-cone volcano that is famous to tourists. Aside from the Mayon Volcano, don’t forget to taste the delicacy of the Bicolanos- spicy foods. You can go around with an ATV for adventure.

7. CAGSAWA RUINS PARK, LEGAZPI

Cagsawa Ruins Park are remnants of a 16th-century Franciscan church, Cagsawa church. It was built in 1587 but was burned down by Dutch pirates in 1636 and rebuilt in 1724 by Fr. Francisco Blanco. But it destroyed in 1814 with the eruption of the Mayon Volcano.

8. GUINANAYAN ISLAND

Guinanayan Island is a white sand surrounding the island. A perfect place for practicing snorkeling, scuba-diving and relax swimming. There is a beach resort and you can even camping. To get to Guinanayan Island there is one daily boat going from Tabaco to Guinanayan.

9. LAKE BULUSAN

Bulusan Lake is a natural beauty located in Sorsogon. The vibrant lake back grounded by the lush forest is a great scenery to bask in. The lake is part of the 4th most active Volcano in the Philippines, Bulusan Volcano. No wonder it’s one of the famous Bicol tourist spots!

10. Surfing in Gubat

Try surfing in Buenavista Beach in Gubat Sorsogon one of the best things to do in Bicol. The place isn’t fully developed yet that’s why the place is a charm. The accomodation around the are well ventilated nipa huts. If you want to learn about surfing, you can learn it here for only  350 PHP . 

11. TINALISAYAN ISLAND, BURIAS ISLAND

Tinalisayan Island is 30 minutes boat ride from San Pascual Port. One of the most beautiful islands with a small sand bar, clear water and white sand. There is an entrance fee of  50 PHP  per adult and Tinalisayan Island was very clean.

You can get an open cottage for  300 PHP  to have lunch. There are no cottages for sleeping in Tinalisayan Island. You can pitch your tent if you are bringing and you talk to the owner in the island.

We enjoyed a few hours taking pictures, flying the drone, swimming, snorkeling, taking under watershots before coming back to San Pascual. There are no cottages in this island but there are tables if you are planning to have your lunch there. It was our favorite one in our Burias Island Tour .

12. SOMBRERO ISLAND, BURIAS ISLAND

Sombrero Island takes an hour to reach there from San Pascual Port. There are cottages in Sombrero Island to stay overnight and you can also rent or pitch a tent if you like it. It’s called Sombrero Island because of the shape of the island next to it as you can see in the picture.

There is an entrance  30 PHP  per adult. And  700 PHP  if you want to rent a cottage during the day. Expect to pay around  1500-3000 PHP  to stay overnight in the cottages.

13. Ticlao Island, Masbate

Ticlao Island is located in Masbate is a perfect pacae for island hopping in the Philippines. You can rent a boat for 2500 PHP good enough for 6-8 people in Monreal North part of the island. From Ticlao Island you can continue in Masbate or going to Bulan in Sorsogon or you can also visit Burias Island.

14. Catanduanes, Virac

Catanduanes is one of the beaten path destinations in the Philippines located in Bicol. You can go by plane from Manila to Virac. The popular activities to do in Catanduanes are surfing and island hopping.

After Catanduanes you can go to Legazpi City to visit Mayon Volcano or you can head to Caramoan by ferry.

15. TRY BICOL EXPRESS

A Backpacker’s Guide to the Bicol Region: Albay, Catanduanes, CamSur & Sorsogon

Located in the southernmost part of Luzon island, the Bicol Region is famous for its whale sharks, pristine islands, breathtaking waterfalls , mouthwatering foods, friendly residents, and active volcanoes. With its breathtaking landscapes, underrated tourist attractions, cultural sites, and amazing historical discoveries, I must say that Bicol must be part of your bucket list when traveling around the Philippines. 

As I wandered around the region for 6 days and 5 nights, I truly fell in love with its beauty. It has its own charm that differs from other regions or places that I have visited across the country. I have been dreaming of exploring and going backpacking around the Bicol Region for a long time, and I am so grateful that it has finally come true! Truthfully, it made me quite emotional as I was exploring the region. Going backpacking is one of my favorite parts of traveling across the region, which I haven’t done since the pandemic.

Where is the Bicol Region located? 

The Bicol Region is designated as Region V and is located at the southernmost end of Luzon (the largest island in the Philippines). Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, and Masbate are the six provinces that make up the region.

Legazpi is the largest city in the Bicol Region, which is the capital of Albay. Meanwhile, Camarines Sur is the largest province in the area, while Catanduanes Island is the smallest island province in the region. Locals from the Bicol region are called Bicolanos, whose mother tongue is the Bikol language, which falls under four major groups of language.

How to get to the Bicol Region?

There are two ways to get to Bicol: by air or by road. Legazpi, Naga, and Virac have their own airports. If you travel by plane, travel time is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. Either way, you can reach the province by bus, which takes you around 10 hours or so.

By Air 

From Manila to Legazpi, Sorsogon, and Virac, you can book a flight via Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, or Cebgo Airlines. 

From Manila, there are buses from Cubao or Pasay that travel to Bicol daily. Buses are bound for Legazpi, Naga, and Sorsogon.

How to get to Catanduanes Island from Legazpi, Albay?

From Legazpi, take any public transport bound for the SM Legazpi terminal. Then, take a van heading to Tabaco port. From Tabaco port, take a ferry bound for Catanduanes Island. The ferry is either bound for San Andres port or Virac port.

From Catanduanes Island, you need to rent a private boat from Codon Port. Codon Port is the starting point of the island hopping tour to the Caramoan Islands.

Getting around the city is very accessible. If you want to travel around the city without breaking the bank. You can either take a tricycle or jeepneys while wandering around the city.

How to get to Sorsogon from Legazpi City? 

From Legazpi City, take any public transport heading to SM Legazpi Terminal. Then, take a van bound for Sorsogon. Tell the driver to drop you off at SM Sorsogon. Travel time is around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Take note that you can do so much more in each of the provinces. In our case, we wanted to stay longer in every place that we visited. That’s why we didn’t really bother visiting a lot of places. I think it is also a sign of aging, wherein we get tired easily. Lol.

6D5N Bicol Region Travel Guide with Itinerary & Expenses

If you are also planning to go backpacking around the Bicol region, you may want to follow this sample itinerary which is good for six days and five nights. This also gives you an idea of how much budget you should bring with you for the entire Bicol region backpacking trip.

Yes, it is safe to travel around Bicol. Most of the locals are very approachable and helpful whenever you ask for directions or anything you need to know about the place itself.

When is the best time to visit the Bicol Region?

April is the best time to visit Bicol since this is the driest month of the year. The perfect time would be around April to May. 

Is the internet connection good in Bicol?

Definitely! The internet connection is pretty much stable around the region. You won’t have any problems with connecting your data to your phone while traveling around the area.

Is it worth visiting the Bicol region?

Yes! It is worth visiting the region. The fact that it is not so expensive to travel around the place, the locals are very kind, and the food totally tastes good! I would really love to keep coming back to this place.

Where to stay in Legazpi, Albay?

We stayed at Aurelle Inn during our entire stay in Legazpi, Albay. The hostel is just 5 minutes away from SM City Legazpi. The cost is about Php 1200 per night, which is already good for two pax. With free breakfast!

Where to stay in Virac, Catanduanes?

We stayed in Rakdell Inn during our stay in Virac. It only cost us around Php 1000 per night. Location-wise, it is very accessible since it is just located in the town.

Do I need a tour guide when traveling around the region?

Not necessarily. You can mostly do DIY backpacking. On the other hand, you may need to avail yourself of a package for ATV Mayon Volcano adventure and hire a tour guide on Catanduanes Island. For reference, you may reach out to the following:

Traveling via a  Manila to Bicol flight  or a Manila to Legazpi flight  is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Albay City. Travel time for  flights to Legazpi and flights to Bicol  usually takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. There are daily roundtrip flights to Manila  from Bicol as well. You will land at Bicol International Airport (DRP).

Alternatively, you can also catch Cebu to Legazpi flights via  Philippine Airlines  and  Cebu Pacific . 

By Bus 

If you have the luxury of time and would rather experience the trip via land, you can take a bus from Manila to Legazpi. The journey lasts for 9 hours. Make sure to book in advance via the go-to bus lines like Cagsawa, DLTB, and Penafrancia.

For visitors traveling from Leyte or Cebu, you can take the 12-15 hour trip through WG&A and Trans Asia shipping lines – both departing from Masbate Port to Legazpi, Albay.

Seeing the magnificence of the Mayon Volcano from the roads of Legazpi, Albay is definitely the real deal. Legazpi City is the capital city of the Province of Albay, located in Bicol Region. The city can be accessed via a 12 to 15 hour Manila to Bicol road trip or an hour-long plane ride from NAIA to Legazpi City Airport.

Our Manila to Bicol Road Trip

Our family vacation in Bicol was an unplanned one—just like many of our adventures. My husband’s work schedule is very unpredictable, which is why we grab any opportunity to take a trip when his schedule opens up.

We initially agreed to just book a hotel within Manila to treat the minis to a staycation, but since it is my husband’s first time to get a week off during Holy Week, he just packed our bag at 4 in the morning, got us all in the car, and surprised us with a trip to Bicol. That said, note that all pictures were taken with an iPhone. Our Bicol road trip was such a surprise that I forgot to pack my SLR! 😀

It is recommended to start your Bicol road trip at 12 midnight so you won’t get caught in traffic. We began ours at 4 in the morning, which is why our trip took longer than expected. Note that you will be traversing a lot of towns throughout the trip, some of which have traffic build up if you pass by during the day. So, if you can leave at night, do it!

Our trip took 15 hours, but they say you can do it in 10 to 12 hours. The road trip to Bicol will take very long so bring water, snacks, and entertainment. Our car has TVs built in so we took a lot of movies with us. The radio won’t work since there is no signal most of the trip—and LTE signal is very hard to get so Spotify won’t work. Your only option? Bring movies (if you have DVD built into your car) and fill up your phone with downloaded music!

We also took with us pillows and blankets for the kids. If you have little ones with you, it is best to have them secured in their car seats for safety and for a more comfortable trip. Ours slept most of the trip and watched movies or ate their snacks when they were awake.

We arrived in Bicol at around 8:30 in the evening. If you can book a hotel ahead of your trip, do it. It is difficult to find a hotel last-minute (especially during the Holy Week) so book one before you go. We were just lucky to get the help of the local fire station, who directed us to a hotel with available rooms.

Now, onto what we did during our trip…

Our Legazpi City Hotel Recommendation

We checked into Ninong’s Hotel Wednesday night. This hotel is right smack at the center of Legazpi City, making it super accessible. Since we took a lot of breaks in between our activities, it was very helpful to have the hotel so near all the tourist spots!

Robinson’s Supermarket is right across the hotel so you can buy snacks there; while restaurants surround it so you have a lot of options come meal time.

Aside from providing easy access to all areas of Legazpi City and surrounding towns, what we love about Ninong’s Hotel are their comfortable accommodation (rooms are airconditioned and the bathroom is spacious) and excellent customer service. They are quick to provide new towels and toiletries for us and are great at dealing with children who tend to get impatient while waiting for their food at the hotel cafe and restaurant.

Room rates at Ninong’s Hotel start at PHP 2,500 (inclusive of buffet breakfast). But, if you are looking for cheaper options, you can book affordable Legazpi City hotels here .

Bicol Itinerary (Best for Families with Kids)

This Bicol tourist itinerary is best for families traveling with small children. If you don’t have kids tagging along, you might be able to try more activities or visit more places. However, since our kids were with us during our Bicol trip, we had to make sure that our kids will also enjoy.

Day 1 (Thursday)

#1 Mount Mayon ATV with Mayon SkyDrive  *MUST TRY* Cost: Php 699 per ATV for the Forest Trail

This is a must try activity when you are in Legazpi City! Aside from it being super fun (even for our two little kids), the ATV ride will give you a pretty good view of Mayon Volcano. This is your chance to take lots and lots and lots of photos!

The best time to try the ATV ride in the Cagsawa ATV Trail is early in the morning so the sun is not too hot and the place is not yet crowded. If you are here by 8 in the morning, you will save yourself from the wait and the heat.

Still, even if you will do this activity early in the morning, remember to bring water, put on sun block, and wear something that will protect you from the sun. We were in our summer clothes when we tried the ATV ride so we ended up with sun burn on our shoulders!

#2 Cagsawa Ruins Cost: Php 20 per adult, Php 10 per child

The town of Cagsawa was buried in rocks and sand when Mayon Volcano erupted in February 1, 1814. This bell tower is the only visible structure from the old town.

We like to insert lessons whenever we travel with the minis. Your visit to the Cagsawa Ruins is your chance to share the violent history behind the beautiful and seemingly harmless Mayon Volcano.

#3 Buffet lunch at Waway’s Restaurant Cost: Php 250 per adult, Php 180 per child

If you want to try Bicol’s authentic food, such as Bicol Express and Pangat, this is the place to go. Located at the heart of Legazpi City, Waway’s Restaurant serves a buffet of Bicolano food favorites as well as dishes common to the rest of the Philippines, like Kare-Kare, Nilasing na Hipon, and Halo-Halo!

Unfortunately, since we went here after our scorching hot ATV adventure, we forgot to take photos of the food. Haha! #foodbloggingfail  But seriously–if you want to try an array of Bicolano food, try Waway’s!

#4 Stroll in Embarcadero de Legazpi Cost: FREE

Take a windy stroll along the port area of Legazpi City. Embarcadero de Legazpi is a wonderful place to sit (or stroll) while you watch the sun set behind Mayon Volcano. There is a long line of food establishments across the port area, too, so you can have dinner here if you would like.

#5 Dinner and Dessert at 1st Colonial Grill

1st Colonial Grill is known for their Bicolano food inspired desserts. The best seller? Their Sili Ice Cream (Php 89 per serving) ! There are three levels: Level 1 (mild), Level 2 (this is what we tried), Level 3 (good luck!). I am not a big fan of spicy food so when I took a spoonful of Level 2 Sili Ice Cream, I was quick to grab (and finish) a huge glass of water. You will not taste the  labuyo at first… until it goes down your throat. It feels both cold and hot!

Day 2 (Friday)

# 1 Whale Shark Encounter in Donsol, Sorsogon *MUST TRY* Cost: Php 3,500 per boat (good for 7 persons), Php 100 per person for environmental fee

Donsol, Sorsogon is a little over an hour drive from Legazpi City. If you do not have a car, there is a van that goes directly to the town. I suggest that if you are already in Legazpi City, then might as well take a side trip to Donsol, Sorsogon.

Our side trip to Donsol is not part of our original plan since we really intended to just stay within Legazpi City and nearby towns. It is a good thing my husband insisted that we take the side trip because the experience of swimming with the Donsol Whale Sharks is AMAZING. I mean, how often can you swim RIGHT BESIDE a Whale Shark, right?!

The best time to swim with the whale sharks in Donsol is from March to May. DO NOT book your whale shark encounter in Legazpi City because it is a lot more expensive there. Instead, go to Donsol then head over to their Tourist Center. From there, you just need to sign up for an encounter, pay for your boat and the environmental fee, then watch a quick video about the do’s and don’ts during your encounter. After that, you will be called to board your boat.

The payment scheme is per boat, which is PHP 3,500 for a 7-seater boat. If you want to save money, look for other tourists who are willing to share a boat with you so you can split the amount. The environmental fee is PHP 100 per person.

The boat fee includes 3 hours of spotting and swimming with whale sharks. However, after one hour and four whale sharks, we decided to go back to shore because the kids were getting hungry already. Lesson: BRING SNACKS.

#2 Lunch and Beach Time at Miraya Dive Resort and Restaurant Cost: Php 150 per meal, Use of the beach is free

After a tiring encounter with the Donsol Whale Sharks, you will need to recharge and cool down. Miraya Dive Resort and Restaurant is just a few minutes from the Tourist Center, which is where you will be dropped off after your encounter. We brought our car to the resort since all our things are in the car, but it’s close enough to just walk to the resort.

Although there are shower rooms at the Tourist Center, you can opt to take your shower at Miraya while you wait for them to prepare your lunch. Their meals start at just PHP 150 (complete with rice and viand) so it’s super affordable!

We were supposed to just shower and have lunch here, but the minis insisted that we stay a few more hours so they can play by the beach. We do not get a lot of beach time lately, so why not!

#3 Japanese Tunnel at Lignon Hill Cost: Php 20 per adult, Php 10 per child

If you love historic sites like we do, then you cannot miss the experience of going inside a World War II Japanese Tunnel in Lignon Hill.

The tour costs PHP 20 per adult and PHP 10 per child. It takes approximately 20 minutes. I was not able to finish the tour since our son got scared, so I had to take him outside.

What to expect: It is pitch dark inside, but you will be provided a flashlight. Kids are allowed to go in, but do not force them if they are scared. It is pretty scary for little ones inside since it is dark and the space is SO small. As you can see in the photo above, the tunnel is just right for our 5-year old’s height.

#4 Dinner at Bigg’s Diner Cost: Php 180+ per meal

Although my husband had a grand time eating Bicolano food, which are mostly cooked with  labuyo and coconut milk, the minis and I were not big fans–mainly because we are not used to spicy food. So, on our last night, we decided to eat something familiar: American food.

Bigg’s Diner seems to be all over Legazpi City. There was one just walking distance from our hotel so we decided to eat dinner there. I recommend that you try their Tenderloin Tips–I really loved those! The kids, on the other hand, said they loved their Italian Spaghetti.

Day 3 (Saturday)

We decided to lay low on our third day so we just had breakfast at our hotel then checked out at 11 in the morning. On our way back to Manila, we decided to visit Bicol churches.

Recommended Bicol Tour Itinerary

This itinerary is perfect for families traveling with kids. You will notice that we inserted a lot of rest times at the hotel in between the activities–that is because the kids will really want to cool down and rest. If you are going on a Bicol road trip with kids, it is best to book a hotel that is easily accessible (like Ninong’s Hotel) so you can quickly go back if the kids need to rest.

Bicol Itinerary and Expenses Break Down

**Please note that our family went on this Manila to Bicol Road Trip in 2016 so all rates are based on 2016 prices.**

This Bicol road trip budget is good for three days in Bicol. This includes prices for two adults and two children aged 5 years old and 4 years old.

If you divide our budget, we spent roughly Php 5,000 per person (two adults, two kids) — food, accommodation, transportation, and activities are included.

Bicol Road Trip Essentials

• Clothes… lots of it. You will want to change clothes after every activity!
• Slippers AND rubber shoes
• Water (so you do not have to buy bottled water)
• Camera (water-proof, if you have one)
• Lotion (to help ease sunburn)

Bicol Road Trip Tips:

• It took us 15 hours going to Legazpi City. If you do not want to get caught in traffic, leave Manila at 12MN.
• If you do not have a car, tourist spots within Legazpi City are accessible through jeepneys and tricycles. Farther places, such as Donsol, can be reached via a van ride. But if you can bring your car, bring it.
• The best time to go to Donsol, Sorsogon to experience swimming with the Whale Sharks (Butanding) is from March to May. We saw a total of 4 Whale Sharks in one hour!
• Your boat rental for the Whale Shark encounter gives you three hours max with the Whale Sharks.
• The fin rental is not a must for the Whale Shark Encounter. It was actually harder for us to swim with the fins on.
• There are more activities in Donsol, such as island hopping. You will need one full day for that. Go for it if you have time!
• There are a lot of activities at Lignon Hill. We went there right after our Whale Shark encounter so we were so tired already. Hence, we opted to just visit the Japanese Tunnel.
• Meals in Legazpi City will cost you approximately P500.00 per meal for a group with two adults and two kids. You may lower the cost if you are willing to eat in a carenderia .

The road trip to Bicol was long. We got bored to death at one point and wanted to go back to Manila, but we do not regret going ahead with the trip! Cross my heart, a family vacation to Bicol is SO WORTH IT. We only explored Legazpi City, its neighboring towns, and Donsol in Sorsogon… so we are already making plans for another trip so we can experience what the rest of Bicol offers.

Hi Kimberly can you suggest pit stops in going to Bicol?

It’s been a while since we’ve been there so I can’t remember specific stops we made. I can recommend towns – stop over in Laguna (if you’re coming from Manila) then Gumaca Quezon then when you enter Bicol. That should give you enough rest in between the long drive. You might need more if you have kids.

Would you know if these rates still apply or this is still how they do things? The Travel agencies told us its hard to do walk ins in the atv, donsol Whaleshark interaction, quitinday falls, so we have to book the package in advance. this is my first time touring Legazpi so i really need your help in making the most out of our experience while also not spending so much money!!

Road Trip Guide: Bicol Highlights

Over the years, I’ve gone back and forth from Manila to my hometown Naga City in Camarines Sur in the Bicol Region. I’ve also gone on road trips with the family to nearby provinces of mainland Bicol: Camarines Norte, Albay and Sorsogon. The Manila to Bicol route passing the Asian Highway 26 (AH26), also known as the Pan-Philippine Highway or Maharlika Highway, is a major road trip route on the island of Luzon in the Philippines.

I’ve been getting inquiries from people planning to drive this route whether by car or motorcycle (and even a few long-distance bikepackers), so I’ve decided to compile a suggested itinerary covering the essentials and some travel tips.

Where exactly is the Bicol Region?

The Bicol Region makes up the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago. By land, Naga City is over 400+ km from Metro Manila while the Matnog Ferry Terminal in Sorsogon is 600+ km away. Depending on the traffic conditions and what time you leave, it can take anywhere from 8-14 hours to get to various points of the Bicol mainland coming from Metro Manila.

After traversing from Manila to Bicol mainland, you can leave Luzon and cross over to Visayas via the Roll-on Roll-Off Ferry from the Matnog Port in Sorsogon to reach Allen in Samar. From there, you can cross to Leyte and towards Mindanao via Surigao.

Why it’s great for riders

The distance from Manila, availability of hotels and resorts, variety of natural attractions you can see along the way and amazing cuisine make the Bicol region a great destination for riders. Naga City in Camarines Sur and Legazpi City in Albay are usually the main destinations, but you can also opt to detour through Daet in Camarines Norte or go all the way to the end of Luzon in Sorsogon before heading back to Manila if you have enough time to spare.

For road trippers doing this for the first time, the most important considerations aside from where to load gas (there are gas stations in major cities), are where to eat (preferably something unique to the place), major landmarks or points of interest easily accessible from the highway, and cheap places to stay if you arrive at night or want to explore the province further. So here are some suggestions of the most scenic and best highlights based on my personal road trips.

Route map for Bicol Road Trip

The fastest route from Manila to Bicol is via the Pan-Philippine Hwy / AH26, which has tolls.

Cavite / Laguna / Batangas

Before you can get to Bicol from Manila, you have to pass through several towns in the Calabarzon region. It can take 4-6 hours just to get away from Manila depending on the traffic. If you’re passing SLEX, it’s best to leave Manila as early as possible (around 4 am) so you can avoid heavy traffic in areas like Sto. Tomas in Batangas, Alaminos, San Pablo in Laguna, Candelaria and Sariaya in Quezon.

If you’re driving a small displacement bike or scooter, an alternative route is to go via the Laguna backroads, which traverses Pilillia, Pagsanjan and Lucban. This route is much more scenic and you can skip major traffic-choked towns and emerge in Pagbilao right after Lucena. Good places to stop for photo ops include the Pilillia Wind Farm in Rizal (if passing Laguna backroads) and Pagsanjan Stone Arch (if passing Laguna backroads), if you haven’t been there yet.

A bulk of the road trip to Bicol involves driving through the province of Quezon. This province, east of Metro Manila is the 8th largest province in the Philippines and the largest province of Calabarzon.

Because of the sheer size of Quezon, different areas have different climate patterns. It can be bright and sunny in one town and then you encounter a sudden rainstorm once you reach the mountains.

• Mount Banahaw
• Kamay ni Hesus in Lucban (if passing Laguna backroads / detour required)
• Welcome to Quezon Arch (boundary of San Pablo City, Laguna and Tiaong, Quezon)
• Villa Escudero in Tiaong (slight detour; entrance fee required)

• Coastal roads of Plaridel, Gumaca and Lopez
• Pink Fish statues (boundary of Gumaca and Plaridel)
• Sirena/Mermaid landmark in Atimonan
• Old Zigzag Road in Atimonan
• Quezon National Park

What and where to eat in Quezon province

• Quezon is a good place for your first meal stop.
• If you’re particular about food, you can eat in the bigger towns like Lucena. There are a lot of fast-food options like Max’s Restaurant and Jollibee.
• Local specialties of Quezon province include Pacit Habhab, Lucban Longganisa, Adobo sa Puti (cooked in coconut vinegar) and Pancit Buko (coconut noodles)

• A lot of vendors along the road sell coconut-based treats like Buko Pie and lambanog.
• It’s mostly carinderias along the coastal road in Gumaca
• If you have time to spare, you can take a detour to Tayabas for a good meal and nice view at Kamayan sa Palaisdaan or Graceland Estates Country Club

Where to Stay in Quezon Province

In case you left Manila late or decide to stay overnight in Quezon, you can find lots of hotels in Lucena and Lucban. There are also a few roadside resorts in other smaller towns like Atimonan, Gumaca and Plaridel.

Camarines Norte

Camarines Norte, the gateway to Bicolandia, occupies the northwestern coast of the Bicol peninsula in the southeastern section of Luzon. Its capital town, Daet is 342 km southeast of Metro Manila, an 8 to 10 hour drive by bus or 6 to 7 hours by private vehicle.

If you don’t want to drive straight all the way to Camarines Sur, you can take a detour through Camarines Norte, and visit Daet, a rising surfing and extreme water-sports destination in the country.

The Bicol region is best known for dishes making use of gata (coconut milk) and sili (chili). Be sure to try Bicol Express, laing, sinantol (ground santol meat with gata), kinunot (manta ray cooked in gata), and pinangat or tinuktok (ground shrimp or crab wrapped in gabi leaves and cooked in gata). Daet is also known for having a sweet variety of pineapples.

Camarines Sur

Camarines Sur is the largest of the six provinces in the Bicol Region. Its territory includes two cities: Naga, the lone chartered city, which serves as the province’s and the region’s religious, cultural, financial, commercial, industrial and business center; and Iriga City. Naga City is about 400+ km or 8-10 hours away from Manila on the Rolando Andaya Highway (Quirino Highway) which does not pass through Daet in Camarines Norte.

Naga City is known as the Heart of Bicol because of its central location and as a Pilgrim City, being home to the largest Marian pilgrimage in Asia, the Our Lady of Penafrancia. In recent years, it’s become a popular destination for wakeboarders.

Bigg’s Diner, the most popular homegrown fast-food joint in the whole Bicol region, originated from Naga City. They have several branches along the highway, so they’re good for take-out if you’re in a rush and don’t have time to eat in the city. Unique eats in Naga City include Kinalas, Toasted Siopao and Pili-based treats.

Albay’s capital is the city of Legazpi, which serves as the regional administrative center of the whole Bicol Region. Albay is located at the southern foothills of Mayon Volcano, the major landmark most associated with the province and the Bicol region as a whole. Albay is about 10-12 hours straight drive or roughly 475 km from Manila.

The highway is fairly straightforward but there are a lot of vehicles on the road. For a more scenic route with rewarding views, you can pass the Tiwi-Sangay Road instead of AH26. Albay is your jump-off point for hiking up Mt. Mayon and ATV and mountain bike adventures on the lava trail.

Sorsogon is the Southernmost province in Luzon at the tip of the Bicol Peninsula, about 12 hours or more straight drive with the port of Matnog 604 km from Manila.

Sorsogon’s major landmark is Mount Bulusan, the tallest peak which rises 1,560 meters(5,120 ft) above sea level. It’s also known for its whaleshark interactions in Donsol.

Beyond the Bicol mainland

Sorsogon serves as the gateway of Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao through its Roll-on/Roll-off ferry terminal located in the municipalities of Matnog, Pilar and Bulan. From here, you can head onwards to Samar and Leyte.

Though it’s possible to drive all the way from Manila to Sorsogon in a day, that can be very tiring. Hopefully , these tips will help you plan your route better, so you can make the most of your long drive, stop by some scenic spots and get to taste some of the unique eats in the Bicol region during your road trip.

Thanks, Agness! The Manila to Naga leg (with one night in Quezon) took us 1.5 days (but we had a detour island-hopping thing after). The other sections, I compiled from various other road trips. While technically you could drive this straight in a day using a private vehicle, I would suggest allotting 4-5 days for the whole trip, so you can spend quality time in various spots instead of breezing through.

Hi Earl. Medyo maulan ngayon, so ingat sa biyahe! Hopefully by December 23, gumanda yung panahon. 🙂 Pag solo ride, parati kong ginagamit ang GPS at Googlemaps sa phone para sigurado na sa tamang daan. Magbaon din ng fully charged powerbank para sa phone.

How are the roads? Di ba delikado? Are there bangin along the way? TIA

Buses and cars regularly pass the Bicol highway. There are some areas (esp. the Old Zigzag Road in Quezon) na medyo may bangin and steep sections, but overall, hindi naman ganun ka-delikado unless you travel during the rainy season, at night or there are landslides. Best to travel during the day to be safe.

Hello Maria. Thank you. I haven’t tried that myself, but you can easily use Google. Type “van rental” + “name of place.” Here’s one based in Naga City . Not sure what their rates are, but you can inquire with them directly.

Wala na rough roads along most of the highway from Manila to Bicol. Completely paved, though meron parts na one-way or lubak na yung asphalt.

Hi Ezra, yes. Many people drive sedans to and from Manila to Bicol. Just be careful with the potholes and rough patches of asphalt in some sections.

Hi Alex, thanks. Not sure what your budget is, but siguro one of the hotels along Magsaysay Ave, para malapit sa mga kainan. ADC Hotel is cheaper compared to other hotels in the area and rooms are nice. Try eating in Bob Marlin nearby! Eurotel and CBD Plaza Hotel pwede din. Yung InnBox Hotel (container van hotel) in Daraga, Albay also looks interesting for riders.

In Naga, there are actually several churches there but we only visited two of them as we are time-constrained. We visited both the PeГ±afrancia Basilica Minore and Our Lady of PeГ±afrancia Basilica Minore.

Hi Ms Kara. It will be my first time traveling (and driving) from Mla to Bicol, Matnog to be exact. And this is exactly what I needed. Though I still have a lot of questions, I’d like to know how long the drive will be. I, with my partner, will leave on April 12 4am (as per your advise) but still not sure what will happen in the next few days. Hi Geo, the photo of the beach in Cam Norte is Bagasbas Beach in Daet. It’s a gray sand beach ideal for surfing, but is also popular among locals for swimming. Sand and wave conditions are similar to Baler. Check out this post .

Hello Alden. Manila to Matnog usually takes 12 hours of driving without the rest stops. I suggest you just turn on Googlemaps and follow the route. I’m sure there have been a lot of changes since I drove there last what with the pandemic, so any advice I give may no longer be applicable. Stop and rest wherever you feel like it, that’s really part of the adventure of road trips. Have a safe trip! 🙂

This will be our first time driving from Manila to Sorsogon with my hubby and sister. Any recommendations for a location with a good view and food/coffee/snacks that we can stop to rest along the way? We plan to leave Manila at midnight.

Hi Gladys, there have been a lot of changes since the pandemic and I believe there are a lot of new restaurants now, so I can’t give updated information. There used to be simple seaside eateries along the highway for riders in the Gumaca (Quezon) area. In Naga and Legazpi, BIGG’s is always a favorite fastfood pit stop favorite though not really the best for views. There are also the usual fastfood stops like Max’s in the major towns along the route.
