Interiors by Fabrizio Casiraghi
With his international background, Milanese architect and designer Fabrizio Casiraghi translates the understated elegance and nobility of old-world Europe into indisputably fresh yet nostalgic ambiance that echoes a life of travel. Design details take on the charisma of personal souvenirs, creating an intimate, residential experience where comfort is the ultimate form of luxury.
Each space is its own voyage, an aesthetic invitation into the memory of a prolific and impassioned world-traveller whose appetite for discovery is expressed through an impressive collection of art objects.
Restaurant & Bar
Steps away from reception, a transatlantic dining experience awaits at Grands Voyageurs. Inspired by the first grand passenger ships that connected France to the East Coast of the United States, the restaurant presents a unique blend of American and Parisian influences both on and off the menu.
Behind reception, the hotel bar stretches into the lobby, welcoming guests and visitors with an inventive collection of signature and classic cocktails.

13th arrondissement
- 1.1 On foot
- 1.2 By métro
- 2 Get around
- 8.2 Mid-range
- 8.3 Splurge
The 13th arrondissement of Paris is primarily a residential and business district in the southeast of Paris, on the Left Bank of the Seine.
Although not usually recognised as a natural magnet for tourists, the 13th nonetheless does hold several attractions of interest to the traveller that include the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (national library), completed in 1996, and part of a major new development of the Paris rive gauche district, the second large-scale urbanism project inside the city of Paris.
To the west of the PRG, along avenue de Tolbiac is the first of these urbanism projects, Les Olympiades , with its raised esplanade and the latest of the Paris Meteor (high-speed metro) stops, Les Olympiades . The southern part of the arrondissement is the Chinatown of Paris, perhaps the biggest in Europe.
Get in [ edit ]
On foot [ edit ]
The easy walk to the 13th arrondissement from the centre of Paris (Île de la Cité) takes around 40 minutes, either through back streets or along the Seine promenade. It can be a very pleasant walk: you can walk across the Latin Quarter, for example, through the rue Mouffetard in the Paris/5th arrondissement .
By métro [ edit ]
You can get to the 13th arrondissement using 3 metro lines:
- Line 7 serves Gobelins' near the Manufacture des Gobelins, Place d'Italie , Tolbiac (good entrance point for Chinatown), Maison-Blanche , and Porte d'Italie , Porte de Choisy and Porte d'Ivry . You will get to these three stations only if you take a train that goes in the Mairie d'Ivry direction. Other trains take another direction and leave Paris immediately after Maison-Blanche.
- Line 6 serves Glacière , Corvisart , Place_d'Italie , Nationale , Chevaleret , near the avant-garde art galleries of rue Louise-Weiss, and Quai de la Gare , near the Bat-O-Far and other .
- Line 14 serves Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand (near the new Bibliothèque de France), Olympiades , Maison-Blanche , before heading to Orly Airport starting in June of 2024.
By bus [ edit ]
- Line 27: Orange in colour
- Line 47: Pink in colour
- Line 61: Dark green in colour
- Line 62: Brown in colour.
- Line 64: goes from Gambetta to Place d'Italie . Turquoise/light green in colour
- Line 67: Pink in colour
- Line 83: Dark yellow in colour
All of these lines stop at Place d'Italie.
- Line 89: Light blue in colour.
- Line 325: Light blue in colour. Heads to Château de Vincennes via the suburbs.
Get around [ edit ]
See [ edit ]
Do [ edit ]
Stroll across the Seine on the Pont Simone de Beauvoir pedestrian bridge from the Bibliotheque Nationale to the Parc de Bercy (in the 12th arrondissement).
Buy [ edit ]
- Les Frères Tang , av, de Choisy . The Tang brothers have the biggest Chinese grocery in Paris, occupying several multistory barracks-like buildings tucked into the Olympic housing project. They're known for giving away large balloons during Chinese New Year celebrations. They are one of the rare supermarkets to be open on Sundays.
Eat [ edit ]
The south part of the district, in the high-rise Chinatown area, is the good place to go if you like Chinese or Vietnamese food. Many outlets sell Vietnamese sandwiches. The area is not the best for getting cheap, good quality Chinese food. Elsewhere the 13th has some standouts.
- Au Banquier , 7, rue du Banquier ( Campo-Formio 5 ), ☏ +33 1 43 36 73 46 . M 09:00–15:00, Tu–Su 09:00–00:00 . Decor is minimalist, but the northern African cuisine of this place is delicious.
- 48.8288 2.3506 1 Chez Gladines , 5, rue des Cinq Diamants ( On the Butte aux Cailles ), ☏ +33 1 45 80 70 10 . M–F 12:00–15:00 19:00–23:45, Sa–Su 12:00–16:00 19:00–23:45 . Big Basque salads and a lot of ambiance in this moderately low-budget restaurant. This place is almost always crowded on Saturday nights.
- Green Garden , 20, rue Nationale ( Port d'Ivry 7 ), ☏ +33 1 45 82 99 54 . East Asian vegetarian
- Phở 14 ( Across from Sinorama ). For Vietnamese soups, best known in the district.
- Sinorama , av de Choisy at rue de Tolbiac . One of many Chinese places in the outer part of the arrondissement.
- Sala Thaï , 13, rue des Frères d'Astier de la Vigerie ( Maison Blanche 7 ), ☏ +33 1 45 84 13 22 . Delicious Thai food. Dinner for about €35 including beverages .
- 48.8279 2.3506 2 Le Temps des Cerises , 18-20, rue de la Butte-aux-Cailles ( Place d'Italie 5 6 7 ), ☏ +33 1 45 89 69 48 . M–Sa 11:45–14:30 & 19:00–23:45 . If you are looking for quality French food, a large choice of good and affordable wine, this is the place to go. This is what we can call a "restaurant populaire" (as opposed to other posh and expensive places around) with a friendly staff, a very nice atmosphere, no way to reserve a table, just show up and the "patron" will find a place for you (arrive before 20:00 if you don't want to queue up, especially on weekends), shut down your mobile phone or you will be kicked out! The "Boudin a la Normande" (blood sausage) is a must, you can also get very decent goose liver and other French speciality such as "Salade de Museau". €12-20 .
Drink [ edit ]
- 48.8347 2.3776 2 La Dame de Canton ( La Guinguette Pirate ), Port de la Gare ( Bibliothèque François Mitterrand 14 or Quai de la Gare 6 ), ☏ +33 1 53 61 08 49 . daily 19:00–00:00 . Known for years as the Guinguette Pirate , this Chinese junk has been rechristened with her maiden name. The restaurant and bookings are still the same, with equal parts world music, chanson français and concerts for kids.
- 48.828 2.351 3 Sputnik , 14, rue Butte-aux-Cailles ( Corvisart 6 ). ( updated Feb 2018 )

Day 1: Overnight Flight
Depart from the USA.
Day 2: Trouville
Arrive in Paris and meet your ACIS Tour Manager before you journey to Trouville on the picturesque Normandy coast.
Day 3: Trouville
Visit the Caen Memorial Peace Museum this morning to relive the heroism of the 1944 liberation of France. Then drive to Colleville-sur-Mer where you can pay tribute to the heroic fallen at the American Cemetery and Memorial before descending from the bluff to walk along Omaha Beach, where American troops suffered some of the heaviest D-Day losses. Continue to Pointe du Hoc to visit the battle-scarred landscape of a crucial US victory on D-Day.
Day 4: Loire Valley
Journey south into the magnificent Loire Valley today and stop in Amboise, a delightful town alongside the Loire River. Here you will visit the Château du Clos Lucé, the great Leonardo da Vinci's final residence. Then view the picturesque moat, drawbridge, towers and turrets that make up the nearby Château de Chenonceau. Built across the Cher River, it is an impressive achievement of Renaissance architecture—and full of riveting stories about resistance to the Nazis.
Day 5: Paris
Depart this morning for Chartres Cathedral to see the beautiful stained glass windows and learn about its Gothic architecture. Continue to Versailles to visit the intricate gardens and stunning palaces of the Sun King, Louis the XIV. Your visit includes the Hall of Mirrors, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed, and the breathtaking surroundings. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to cover every room of his vast palace. The best stuff is all in the gardens and grounds: all 1,976-acre gardens, 200,000 trees, 50 fountains and 620 jets of water worth. After leaving the gardens, it is a short journey into Paris.
Day 6: Paris
Paris is known as the “City of Light” for its role as a center of learning during the Age of Enlightenment. It was also one of the first cities to install street lighting. A morning sightseeing tour with an expert local guide shows you the city's most impressive monuments, from the magnificent Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Élysées to Napoleon's tomb at Les Invalides to the Gothic wonder of Notre Dame. Later, breeze by the crowds with your timed entrance to the Louvre and discover the many famous masterpieces that call it home. Insightful commentary from your local guide highlights the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo and more as you wander through the galleries. From its beginnings as a royal fortress to its current status as the world's most visited art museum, the Louvre has long been at the center of Parisian culture and home to a collection of 35,000 works of art from around the world. After, ascend to the top floor of the iconic Eiffel Tower for spectacular views over Paris. Tonight's highlight is a traditional French crêpe dinner.
Day 7: Provence
Travel to Avignon this morning aboard the high-speed TGV, one of the fastest trains in Europe. Explore beautiful Avignon as you see the imposing Papal Palace and the famous Pont Saint-Bénézet. Then drive to see the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct preserved in almost perfect condition. A true marvel of Roman engineering, the 161-foot tall bridge aqueduct is still standing nearly 2,000 years after its construction. Our tour offers an exclusive guided visit to the third floor for a closer look at the structure's architecture and exceptional views. Continue to your hotel in Provence for the evening.
Day 8: Cote d'Azur
Drive to Aix-en-Provence in the morning and discover the beauty that makes this city a favorite sojourn for painters. Artists from a local atelier will teach you the techniques of painting during a Be Cézanne workshop. They will also provide canvases and materials for you to be inspired, as he was, to paint your own masterpiece. Then admire the rugged limestone of majestic Mont Sainte-Victoire, a favorite and frequent subject of Cézanne, as you continue to Nice. Then drive along the corniche to the perched village of Eze with its castle ruins and steep streets. Enjoy sweeping vistas from the fragrant Jardin Exotique, an amazing cliffside botanical garden, and tour the Fragonard Perfume Factory, where you'll learn about the centuries-old French art of making parfum . The scenic drive back to Nice will cap off a full day and an exceptional week.

Ismaël Ferroukhi: Le Grand Voyage
The journey home
“Reda: Why didn’t you fly to Mecca? It’s a lot simpler. The Father: When the waters of the ocean rise to the heavens, they lose their bitterness to become pure again … Reda: What? The Father: The ocean waters evaporate as they rise to the clouds. And as they evaporate they become fresh. That’s why it’s better to go on your pilgrimage on foot than on horseback, better on horseback than by car, better by car than by boat, better by boat than by plane.”
LE GRAND VOYAGE by French-Moroccan auteur, Ismaël Ferroukhi (born 1962), is one of those rare cinematic events that leaves you weeping long after the final closing moments, when you realize that what you have just experienced is your own inner pilgrimage into the deepest chambers of your heart in humble homage to the puissance of human relationships, the potency of spiritual journeys and, above all, the power of eternal love.
The first ever fiction feature to be granted permission to film in Mecca, Le Grand Voyage explores the relationship between a devout Muslim immigrant Moroccan father (Mohamed Majd) and his secular French adolescent son, Réda (Nicolas Cazalé), as they set off en route from Provence, France, in a beat-up blue Peugeot to make the annual hajj or pilgrimage, travelling through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria and Jordan before finally reaching Mount Arafat in Saudi Arabia, where the Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon more than 1,400 years ago.
Forced to leave behind his girlfriend, Lisa, and abandon his impending Baccalauréat exams, Réda is seething with anger and annoyance at his autocratic father, who similarly feels frustrated by his son’s wayward view of life, their emotional distance and dissonance aptly displayed by the father always speaking in Maghrebi Arabic and the son always responding in Provençal French, despite the fact that both understand each other’s mother tongue.
Le Grand Voyage is not, however, an examination of the dichotomies of the spoken word; indeed, very little is actually said between the men as they forge their way through passport controls, bustling city streets and empty autoroutes that stretch for mile upon mile upon mile into the never-ending distance. Rather, it is the somatic exploration of all that is unsaid, expressed so compellingly through the nuanced facial gestures and subtle physical postures of the two principal protagonists.
Moreover, the film becomes replete with meaningful symbolism, pointing towards elements and archetypes deep within the psyche, that only sequences with minimal dialogue are able to reveal: a silent old woman in a black burqa slipping onto the back seat and accompanying the men for many hours at the start of their trip representing, according to the director, the shadow side of human nature; the orange passenger door of the blue Peugot automobile emblematic of the father’s passionate Muslim faith in contradistinction to his son’s cool agnosticism and ennui; Réda often arousing from sleep and rubbing his eyes, metaphorical of the various states of human consciousness through which he must pass until his final awakening and rebirth.
One of my favourite scenes is a dream sequence in the Syrian desert, in which Réda sees his father dressed as a goatherd, shepherding his flock over the dunes. Réda calls out to him but is ignored and then, to his horror, is pulled deep down into the sand. As he flails about in utter panic, he abruptly wakes up to see his father kneeling in prayer, his palms in supplication to Allah. The portentous significance is understood when we see another herd of goats being driven through the streets of Mecca under the moonlight when their journey has come to an end.
Indeed, Le Grand Voyage is a love letter to all that lies beneath the surface of things—feeling and emotion, faith and silence, the very unifying substratum of life itself and what it means to be human, all set against a passing backdrop of stunning European and Middle-Eastern scenery: snowy mountains and sapphire skies, shimmering deserts and setting suns.
Upon reaching Saudi Arabia, in a deeply poignant moment, Réda and his father sit side by side leaning against the car and express how much they have learnt from their communal journey. They also meet fellow hajjis, sharing food and stories of their trips. Despite the fact that Réda’s heart is opening up to his father’s religion, whilst the pilgrims pray on their prayer mats, we feel deeply moved by his divided loyalties as he writes his girlfriend’s name, Lisa, in the sand with his shoes.
At last, Mecca is in their sights. The call of the muezzin hypnotizes us into a heightened anticipation and thrill of the unknown. The father prepares himself for Ihram [a sacred state which a Muslim must enter in order to perform the hajj by performing cleansing rituals and wearing prescribed attire] and leaves for his pilgrimage to the Kaaba, leaving Réda to sleep in the car. In rare footage of thousands of white-robed Muslims descending upon the Great Mosque of which the director was granted filming rights, I am reminded of the full moon pradakshina around Mount Arunachala, such is the sheer density of humanity paying their reverential respects.
Later that evening, the hajjis return but Réda’s father is missing. The following morning, he searches in vain amidst a heaving sea of devotees, growing forever more anxious and frantic, finally being restrained and removed by security guards and taken away to a quiet, secluded room whereupon he discovers his father’s fate.
The final scenes are utterly heartbreaking and yet if we understand the inherent message of the Islamic teaching, the father does indeed find the peace and spiritual release he has been searching for. Even more significantly, Réda is completely transformed by the events of the hajj whereby his character metamorphosizes from feeling resentful, irate and rebellious into being compassionate, forgiving and loyal.
Moreover, as Fowzi Guerdjou’s musical score swells acoustically, along with our tear ducts, I similarly feel profoundly transformed by this mystical adventure into the deepest recesses of the soul. As with any holy expedition, we are forced to face the darkness within ourselves in order to facilitate the light.
Le Grand Voyage is thus the ultimate journey, transcending cultural barriers and filial boundaries, even the beliefs of faith itself, leading us unto the universality of the human spirit and the unity of immortal love.

France: Le Grand Voyageur
All was in readiness. French embassy staffs in ten South American capitals busied themselves with last-minute details, while hard-eyed agents of the Sure-te kept all anti-Gaullists in Latin America under close scrutiny. The French cruiser Colbert, on which le grand voyage ur would reside during six of his 25 days abroad, had been refitted with special communications equipment, furniture from the French National Museums, and paintings by Rouault and Utrillo. In Buenos Aires a French-born cabinetmaker put the finishing touches on a 7-ft. 2-in. bed, while in Rio de Janeiro carpenters readied a pair of chairs that would hopefully diminish the undiplomatic disparity in height between Brazilian President Humberto Castello Branco (5 ft. 5 in.) and his 6-ft. 4-in. visitor.
The Language of Bolivar. As Charles de Gaulle set out this week on his strenuous, 18,000-mile South American tour, little had been left to chance. With him went more than 50 prepared speeches, dozens of signed, framed photographs, a handful of oil paintings for especially honored hosts, scores of Sevres porcelain souvenirs, two physicians, six security men, a planeload of eager newspaper and television reporters, and his shy, self-effacing wife Yvonne, who was bringing along a special wardrobe by Jacques Heim.
Weeks of language lessons at his country home in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises had equipped De Gaulle with enough Spanish and Portuguese phrases to sprinkle through his speeches, though they did little to correct his heavy French accent. Tucked away in De Gaulle’s prodigious memory were the key facts of South American history, geography, economics and politics contained in ten hefty dossiers prepared last winter by France’s Latin American embassies.
But there was one thing that De Gaulle most emphatically was not bringing with him: francs. There would be no offers of cash aid or loans. The basic purpose of the trip was not to buy Latin affection, Gaullist sources insisted, but rather to “reactivate and reinvigorate” French relations in South America, which withered with France’s decline as an international power during and after World War II. De Gaulle was clearly avoiding direct conflict with U.S. influence in Latin America, but he was not forgoing the chance to preach his favorite sermon of renewed nationalism. “I will simply employ the language of Bolivar,” he explained, meaning that his main theme would be national independence and “self-liberation.”
The Vertigo of Legend. It all sounded vaguely grand, or perhaps grandly vague, but many of De Gaulle’s closest supporters were worried. For all its prestige value, the trip will keep the French President, at 73 and just five months after his prostate operation, on a dead run for more than three weeks. Gaullist newspapers worried in print about the “alarming trip” that would take their hero to “the land of revolutions, of assassination attempts one after another.” Novelist François Mauriac, a most emotional Gaullist, wrote in Figaro Litte-rairé: “I fear this trip, I detest it; it seems to me a provocation of destiny. I ask myself if the personnage, already legendary, is not giving in for the first time to the vertigo of his own legend.”
But De Gaulle no doubt has his own good reasons for making the trip, and rumors in Paris last week had it that if the South American journey proves immensely successful, he just might call a snap presidential election this fall rather than a year from now. In any event, as De Gaulle himself said to a worried aide who urged him to cut back on his schedule: “One can only die once: one cannot pass one’s life, sleep, eat in an armored car.”

On y pense déjà.
