The 9 Best Loofahs of 2024, Tested & Reviewed

Reveal the radiant skin hiding underneath.

mini travel loofah

Byrdie / Joline Buscemi

The right loofah can transform any body wash into a luscious foam that buffs away dead skin to leave you looking radiant from head to toe. (The wrong loofah can provide a breeding ground for bacteria and leave skin red and rashy.) To make matters related to this simple tool more complicated, the loofah universe is populated with natural loofahs, synthetic loofahs, double-sided loofahs, and even loofahs that come with massage attachments.

To find the very best loofahs, we’ve done the so-called dirty work for you. After researching and narrowing down the list of contenders, we tested each one in our own showers—using our favorite body washes , natch. Then we sat down to compare our experiences and compile this list of the very best loofahs.

What's better, shower exfoliation or dry brushing?

Exfoliating in the shower (with a loofah or other exfoliating tool ) and dry brushing both offer skin-enhancing benefits. Shower exfoliation is more effective for removing dead skin and rough patches and preventing ingrown hairs, while dry brushing boosts circulation and may aid in lymphatic drainage and reduce cellulite . If you have sensitive skin , you’ll probably find dry brushing to be a gentler experience. No matter which method you choose, always moisturize afterwards.

  • What to Look For

Why Trust Byrdie

Best overall, aquis exfoliating back scrubber.

Double-sided fabric exfoliates or washes

Machine washable

Easily reaches back

Creates a great lather

Can be a bit large

Material: Polyester and microfiber | Shades: Dark grey, jungle, linen | Size: Large

The AQUIS Double-Sided Exfoliating & Cleansing Back Scrubber tops this list because it does everything a good loofah should do, plus more. It’s essentially a long piece of double-sided fabric with two handles on each end, making it easy to use as a typical washcloth or across your back while holding it by the handles. Unlike many other loofahs we tried, we were able to clean our entire backs without much effort.

This loofah has two sides—one is very soft (softer than a washcloth), and the other is grittier. But despite the latter being rough enough to exfoliate the skin , the texture is very fine, so instead of irritating skin, it gently yet efficiently buffs away rough areas and makes skin feel super smooth. It lathers up just as well as body wash does on its own, if not a little bit better. On top of everything else, it can be thrown into the washing machine to clean, making it super hygienic and more environmentally friendly than loofahs that need to be tossed after a few weeks.

Best Budget

The body shop ultra fine bath lily.

The Body Shop

Creates a lot of suds

Gently exfoliating

Small size, can be hard to reach certain areas

Material: Bath lily | Shades: Green, cream, pink | Size: Small

Most of the loofah options here are priced affordably, but if you only have a few bucks to spend, this is a loofah to consider. This shower pouf lathers up super well, much more than a body wash does on its own. It’s made of a fine mesh that’s just textured enough to be gentle yet mildly exfoliating. It’s not scratchy whatsoever and is comfortable enough to use daily. But while it was easy to use on most parts of the body, it's not great for targeting the middle of the back. The hanging loop is also quite small, so we also weren’t able to put it around our wrists for easier maneuverability.

Beware that the low price means it may not be as high quality—especially in material—as other options. . Still, it’s super affordable, and it’s made out of 100 percent recycled material. Overall, this is a great affordable loofah that exfoliates gently and without irritating skin.

Best for Everyday

Mainbasics main basics bath shower loofah sponge pouf.

Gentle enough for everyday

Creates a good amount of foam

Comes in a 3-pack

Can’t reach back

Must be discarded after a month

Material: Nylon | Shades: Dark gray, rose pink, white | Size: Medium

For an everyday, super foamy shower, this loofah is the best. Body wash lathered up significantly more than it usually does, making the skin feel clean and soft. Thanks to the fine mesh, it’s not rough on the skin whatsoever, but it has enough texture that it gently exfoliates and softens without irritation.

While the size and texture of this loofah are ideal, the big con is that it’s nearly impossible to clean your upper and middle back with it. Still, we were able to look past this due to how well it works. “Out of all the loofahs I’ve tried, this is the one I prefer to use the most,” says Byrdie editor Olivia Hancock . “It’s durable, affordable, and delivers on its claims of providing exfoliation and a creamy lather. My skin feels noticeably softer and smoother after using this loofah.”

The loofah comes in a pack of three, so you can either share the extras with family or keep them on deck to swap out when needed (replacing every 30 days or so is recommended). The number of loofahs you get for the price, along with the gently exfoliating material, make this a great option for everyday use.

Best for Everyday, Runner-Up

Shower bouquet charcoal bath loofah.

Comes in a 4-pack

Has a great lather

Gently exfoliates

Material: Mesh | Shades: Charcoal gray | Size: Medium

A shower pouf makes a great everyday loofah, which is why this is another solid option for your go-to loofah. We found that this charcoal-infused shower pouf produced a ton of lather, way more than body wash does on its own. It left us feeling clean and ready for the day. Like many other options out there, we could only clean areas we could reach with our hands; however, we appreciated that this loofah is on the larger side, making the washing process much quicker.

It's made of a synthetic mesh, which feels soft on the skin while still providing light exfoliation. The hanging loop is large enough to wrap around your wrist, making it easier to maneuver around the body and hang dry. More importantly, it comes in a pack of four, which is extremely cost-effective considering that you'll need to change this out about once a month.

Best Gloves

Earth therapeutics organic cotton exfoliating gloves.

Strong exfoliation

Easy to use

May be too rough for sensitive skin

Material: Nylon, cotton, and polyester | Shades: Natural | Size: Small

Unlike loofahs you have to hold, these slip right onto your hands, so using them is as easy as rubbing your hands over your body. While they have cotton in the name, don’t let that fool you into thinking these are soft; we've used similar glove exfoliators in the past, but none of them have been as exfoliating as these. They feel surprisingly rough right out of the package, but once in the shower with water and soap, the scratchiness lessens.

Because of how textured these are, we wouldn’t recommend using them every day for fear of irritating skin. “Because I have dry skin , I don’t foresee myself using them more than once a week,” says Hancock. They also didn’t produce a huge amount of lather compared to other loofahs, but it was still more than body wash creates alone. Also nice: The cotton has anti-microbial protection weaved in, protecting the gloves from odor-causing bacteria.

Despite being tricky to put on, they still do a great job cleaning and exfoliating the skin overall. “When paired with a nourishing body wash, they can help buff away dullness and unclog pores,” says Hancock. “For me, these gloves are better suited for occasionally targeted exfoliation rather than regular head-to-toe use. If you’re looking for budget-friendly exfoliating gloves, these are worth a try.”

Best High Tech

Pmd clean body.

Easily reach back

Cleanses, exfoliates, and massages

Super high-tech

Must be charged

Material: Silicone, aluminum oxide, and more | Shades: Navy, blush, berry | Size: Large

The PMD Clean Body Cleansing Device is unlike anything else on this list. The high-tech, rechargeable device can hardly be called a loofah. With three attachments and multiple settings, it has everything you need in one product.

The best attachment for lather is the loofah attachment, which provided a little bit more suds than body wash does on its own. For exfoliation, there are a few options: The loofah and silicone cleansing brush very mildly exfoliate, while the actual exfoliation attachment buffs skin more intensely with antibacterial aluminum oxide crystals. All of the attachments were gentle enough not to make the skin red or irritated. We love that this has a long handle, making it an excellent option for reaching the middle of the back, an area that was missed with most other loofahs we tested.

While we were impressed with this device, it also fell short in a few ways. The heads felt too small (except for the massage head), so it took a while to use them over the entire body. It also felt awkward to use at times—the device has some give to it, so sometimes it was difficult to wrangle where we needed it to be. But, if you’re looking for something with all the bells and whistles, this is the option for you.

Best Natural

Lather natural sea wool sponge.

Produces a ton of lather

Eco-friendly

Doesn’t exfoliate

No hanging ribbon

Material: Sea sponge | Shades: Natural | Size: Medium

Made of 100% natural sea sponge, this pick is nicely large in size, and using it is as easy as wiping it all over your skin. It also lathers well, much more so than a body wash does on its own. It absorbs a lot of water and product, which is the secret to getting that rich, creamy foam when you wring it out.

When dry, the sponge feels extremely hard and scratchy, but the texture completely changes after soaking it in water. "When I wet this sponge, it becomes incredibly soft and glides across my skin with ease. I can be confident my skin won't be subject to irritation when using this," says Hancock. While we thought it felt nice and soft on the skin, we found that it lacked any exfoliating properties. You also can't use it anywhere you can't reach with your hands, so it's somewhat limited in that area as well. But overall, we love this cruelty-free, eco-friendly option (it's sustainably harvested and completely biodegradable, after all).

Best for Back

Luvscrub mesh body exfoliator.

Bloomingdales

Long-lasting

Exfoliates well

Easy to reach back

Less lather than others

Material: Nylon | Shades: Naked sunset, indiglo, luvender, summer shower, midnight | Size: Large

Inspired by the founder’s West African Heritage, this loofah is essentially a large swath of fabric, so it’s easy to use however it’s needed. It stretches a ton when wet, so it’s easy to scrub your entire back or use as a traditional washcloth elsewhere, a nice plus. Crafted from a unique wide-weave nylon, it effectively exfoliates the skin while still being gentle; it’s not scratchy or too rough for everyday use. “It feels like it gets a deep clean like I was scrubbing everything clean,” says tester Rachel Lee. “I was impressed with how effectively it exfoliated; my skin felt rejuvenated and so soft after. It noticeably helped with any skin texture/bumpiness .”

It’s not the best option if you prefer a super sudsy shower, but the benefit to this is that it doesn’t soak up a lot of product, meaning less soap gets wasted. Overall, it’s a nice option for doing everything you need a loofah to do. It cleans well, mildly exfoliates, reaches everywhere on the body, and comes in five gorgeous colors. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The brand claims it’s good for up to 18 months.

Best Multi-Use

Ecotools dual cleansing pad.

Dual-sided for lather and exfoliation

Lathers well

Recycled material

Material: Mesh | Shades: Pink, mauve, blue, and more | Size: Small

This dual-sided tool has a loofah on one side and a shower pouf on the other, making it a great compact option for cleansing and exfoliating. It's made of a naturally textured material that exfoliates the skin without being too rough. However, this tool is on the smaller side, and we couldn't reach places like the middle of our backs. In terms of lather, it's just slightly better than body wash on its own. We found the mesh side was the best option for the most lather—it's not large enough to produce a ton of suds, but we found it to be sufficient to leave us feeling clean.

Overall, this is a great option for travel because the small size and dual sides make it easy to pack two shower tools in one. Also nice? EcoTools is a cruelty-free and vegan brand. The mesh netting is made with recycled material, and the packaging is 100 percent plastic-free.

What to Look for in a Loofah

  • Material: Loofahs can be made of various materials, including polyester, microfiber, cotton, nylon, silicone, mesh, or even natural sponges sourced from the ocean. The best options are long-lasting and resistant to bacteria and mildew growth. Before purchasing a loofah, make sure you check that it’s antimicrobial (meaning bacteria and mildew can't grow on it) and machine-washable, suggests celebrity aesthetician Joshua Ross . “This will prevent bacteria formation and make it easier to clean.” This will also prevent odor and assure the loofah won’t cause any rashes or infections.
  • Texture: While you may want loofah with serious physical exfoliating power to help slough off dead skin and promote circulation, a too-rough loofah can damage the skin. You want your loofah to have a soft, fine grit, explains Ross. “It shouldn’t be too rough, or it can break the skin, leading to irritation, redness, and possibly infection,” he tells Byrdie.
  • Fiber type: When possible, Ross recommends looking for loofahs made of natural fibers. “Synthetic fibers can irritate the skin and lead to things like contact dermatitis,” he explains.

In general, you should be machine washing your loofah in hot water at least once a week, says Ross. However, not all loofahs are machine washable, so be sure to read the cleaning instructions for whichever one you opt for.

Ross advises replacing your loofah every month, but depending on the type of loofah you own, yours may last much longer. Loofahs that are machine washable have a longer lifespan, while mesh-like loofahs are typically only good for a month.

The best loofah to wash your back with is something that allows you to access this hard-to-reach area of your body. In most cases, this means the exfoliating material will be connected to some sort of stick or rod.

Both washcloths and loofahs allow you to cleanse and physically exfoliate your body by sloughing off dead skin cells. But depending on the material, a loofah might be a little more efficient when it comes to exfoliation. Bear in mind, though, that both products can harbor bacteria. You'll want to look for something that's machine-washable and, ideally, antimicrobial, meaning the material won't harbor bacteria and mildew.

The cleanest way to wash your body in the shower might just be with your hands since washcloths and loofahs can harbor bacteria if they're not properly cleaned or stored. But if you prefer a loofah, your best bet is a machine-washable option made of an antimicrobial material, like natural sea sponge or silicone.

  • 7 Best Loofahs [Tested and Reviewed]

A loofah can come to the rescue when you want to bathe yourself in a thick, foamy lather. Of course, you could wash with a bar of soap or body wash, but using a loofah can help exfoliate the skin and thoroughly clean your body with its rich lather. Yet, choosing the right one can be difficult with so many manufacturers like Shower Bouquet, DadyMart, and The Body Shop.

Each product was tested on the following five factors.

  • Exfoliating properties
  • Amount of lather produced
  • Richness of the lather
  • Comfort against the skin
  • Ability to clean your back

One of the key benefits of using a loofah is its ability to slough off dead skin cells. We set out to test how effective each loofah was in this regard. Following the testing procedure below, we evaluated each product, rating them higher if they noticeably reduced dead skin cells. We used a skin cell checker to determine the amount of skin cells on someone's arm.We lathered the loofah, washed their arm, and rinsed it off.We dried any remaining moisture with a towel. Then we again used the skin cell checker to measure how many dead skin cells the loofah removed.

2 Amount of Lather

To wash the entire body, it's best if a loofah can produce a lot of lather in one go. Therefore, we tested how much lather each loofah generated using the following procedure. The more lather a sponge created, the higher it was rated. We applied two pumps of body soap and about a half cup of water to the loofah, then kneaded it 30 times. Then we measured the amount of lather produced.

3 Richness of Lather

A lush, thick lather is crucial to reduce friction against the skin while bathing. We tested the richness of the lather using the procedure below, giving a higher rating to sponges that managed to keep a coin afloat for at least 10 seconds. We applied two pumps of body soap and about a half cup of water to the loofah, then kneaded it 30 times. We transferred the lather onto a plate, then placed a coin on the foam to see if it stayed afloat for 10 seconds.

4 Gentleness on the Skin

If the texture of a loofah is too coarse, it could potentially harm your skin. To test how gentle loofahs were on the skin, we had our team of three women and two men rate the gentleness of each sponge by evaluating the points below, giving a higher rating to those with a balanced feel on the skin.Does the loofah cause any pain?Is the loofah too soft?

5 Ease of Back Washing

It's beneficial if your loofah can comfortably cover all areas of your back. So, our team of three women and two men rated each sponge, giving a higher rating to those that could easily reach the back.

How We Tested the Loofahs

Tips for keeping your loofah sanitary, what are the benefits of using a loofah compared to a washcloth.

Let's first go over the pros and cons of loofahs. We tested loofahs' ability to exfoliate, produce a good lather, and reach your back compared to a washcloth.

Loofahs Produce a Rich Lather and Leave Your Skin Feeling Smooth

One appealing feature of loofah sponges is their ability to easily exfoliate dead skin and produce a thick, frothy lather. Compared to a washcloth, a loofah is typically made from rougher materials that can aid in removing dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling silky and smooth .

In addition, the multilayered construction helps to generate a finer, denser lather , a significant selling point.

Smaller Loofahs May Not Reach All Areas of Your Back

One of the attractive features of a loofah is its ability to deliver smoother skin, but it can fall short in size . This can make it challenging to wash the hard-to-reach areas of your back effectively.

You’ll need a loofah measuring at least six by six inches to ensure your back gets a thorough cleaning . Therefore, we suggest considering a larger size when choosing your loofah.

How to Choose a Loofah - Buying Guide

For effective exfoliation and luxurious lather, consider loofahs made from synthetic materials.

Loofahs made from synthetic materials such as polyethylene and polyester are great for removing dead skin. They provide excellent exfoliation and offer a rich, fluffy lather without being harsh on your skin.

Our Testers Were Able to Exfoliate Well With Synthetic Loofahs

Loofahs made of synthetic material tend to be more effective at removing dead skin cells than those made from other materials. In our exfoliation test, we compared before and after using various loofahs.

Those made from synthetic plastic materials were the clear winners, showing a noticeable difference in skin texture, whereas natural loofahs and ones made from recycled materials fell short. If you're having issues with rough skin or stubborn dirt , we'd highly recommend a loofah made from synthetic materials.

For a Rich, Foamy Lather, Avoid Loofahs Made From Recycled Milk Cartons

The secret to thick lather lies in the design. Many plastic sponges have a multilayered, rose-like structure, which helps create a rich, luxurious lather. Sponges made from recycled milk carton materials, on the other hand, may not quite meet your expectations . So, if you’re a lather lover, we strongly suggest going synthetic.

Natural Loofah May Not Suit Those With Sensitive Skin

Synthetic loofahs offer a gentle and soothing cleanse that leaves your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated with minimal discomfort. On the other hand, natural loofah can be less agreeable for those with sensitive skin. Some of our testers reported a prickly sensation, with a few mentioning noticeable discomfort .

If your skin tends to be sensitive, you might want to steer clear of natural loofahs. In short, synthetic loofahs are likely your best bet if you have delicate skin or prefer a gentler scrub .

In Terms of Size, Bigger Is Better

Loofahs are available in a wide range of sizes, from compact sponges that comfortably fit in the palm of your hand to larger ones that cover more area. The key is choosing a large enough loofah to clean your back effectively.

In Order to Clean Your Back, Aim for a Sponge at Least Six by Six Inches

Loofahs may fall short when reaching those hard-to-get areas on your back if they're too small. We recommend choosing larger ones , ideally measuring around six by six inches. Our testers appreciated these bigger loofahs for their ability to make back cleaning simple and easy.

While being comfortable to hold, sponges under five and a half inches may not quite get the job done when thoroughly cleaning your back. So, if this is your priority, it's probably best to bypass the smaller options when choosing your loofah.

XL Bath Sponge 1

mybest's Top Choice! Envelope Yourself in a Cloud of Bubbles With a Soft Sponge That’s Gentle on the Skin

This bath sponge is our top pick for those who enjoy bathing in a thick, foamy lather. Shower Bouquet's XL Bath Sponge, formulated with bamboo charcoal, which is known for its skin and pore cleansing properties, takes our top spot. One of the most compelling features of this sponge is its ability to produce large amounts of rich lather just by kneading it. This is perfect for those who wish to bathe their whole body in a cloud of foamy bubbles and speed up bath time.

During our exfoliation test, three out of four testers reported that it effectively removed dead skin. This sponge is suitable for those seeking to remove excess dead skin cells and achieve silky-smooth skin. In our test for gentleness on the skin, testers reported the sponge felt soft and fluffy against their skin, with some noting a vigorous scrubbing sensation with little if any discomfort. Its soft texture makes it suitable even for people with sensitive skin . Plus, the sponge’s rose-folded design with multiple overlapping layers makes it large enough to reach your back, allowing you to wash your whole body with ease.

DadyMart Bath Shower Loofah Sponge

Bath Shower Loofah Sponge 1

Thick, Fluffy Bubbles With a Gentle, Pain-Free Scrub

The DadyMart Bath Shower Loofah Sponge is designed with a firm knot in the center to prevent the sponge from falling apart. In our exfoliation test, it achieved a high score, with three out of four reviewers confirming that it successfully removed dead skin cells and left their skin looking clear. Plus, it generates a fluffy, rich lather after kneading just 30 times, making it an excellent choice for those seeking an effortless foam.

In tests of gentleness on the skin, the somewhat firm texture received high praise from our testers, who commented on its balanced softness and firmness and how it caused minimal discomfort even during vigorous scrubbing. One drawback, however, is that its palm-of-the-hand size has limited reach while washing your body. Reaching your entire back may pose a bit of a challenge unless you can twist your arm back quite a bit.

Overall, if you're seeking a loofah that gives fluffy lather, helps remove dead skin, and has a bit of firmness against the skin, this product is a top contender.

WhaleLife Bath Body Poufs

Bath Body Poufs 1

Bathe With a Thick, Rich Lather While Exfoliating Your Skin

WhaleLife's Bath Body Poufs are enhanced with natural bamboo charcoal to facilitate removal of dead skin cells, even for those with sensitive skin. As advertised, many of our testers rated the sponge highly for effectively removing dead skin . If you're looking to exfoliate and achieve smoother skin, this could be a great pick. An added bonus is that it produces plenty of rich lather, which could help reduce friction when used with a proper lathering technique.

However, some testers found the material a bit rough , leading to some discomfort against the skin. If you prefer a good hard scrub, be aware that this sponge might feel a bit harsh, so you might want to be gentle. Also, its palm-size design limits the washing area to within arm's reach. If you're looking for a body sponge that makes finely-formed lather and effectively removes dead skin, this pouf might be just what you're after.

Equate Beauty Gentle Exfoliation Bath Sponge

Gentle Exfoliation Bath Sponge 1

Creates Dense Foam and Removes Dead Skin, Leaving the Skin Smooth

Equate Beauty's Gentle Exfoliation Bath Sponge set comes in three colors: pink, green, and gray. While it doesn’t produce an impressive amount of lather, the thickness of the foam yielded high marks in our lather richness test. Also, many of our testers were able to reduce dead skin cells using this sponge, making it ideal for achieving smoother skin.

In terms of how it feels against your skin, opinions among our testers varied: some felt a bit of friction from the mesh fibers, but not to the point of pain, while others felt almost no pain even when scrubbing hard, resulting in a modest rating. People with sensitive skin might find it painful, but those with normal skin should be able to use it with no issues. Its hand-held size is a plus for easy handling, but its reach is limited for full-body washing , which held back its overall score.

Metene Bath Shower Loofah Sponge

Bath Shower Loofah Sponge 7

Produces a Fluffy, Dense Lather, but Not Great for Cleaning the Back

The Metene Bath Shower Loofah Sponge is made of polyester with a sturdy knot for durability. While the rich foamy lather it produces is definitely a plus, the amount of bubbles falls a bit short . It might leave those who enjoy lots of lather less than satisfied.

In our exfoliation tests, we saw virtually no difference, suggesting it might not be suitable for those who struggle with rough skin and want to wash away dead skin. On the other hand, testers praised its softness during the gentleness test, noting its pleasing, gentle touch against the skin. It's a great choice for those who prefer a gentle wash . However, its smaller design doesn't do well for cleaning your back, limiting its overall appeal.

Crafts Of Egypt Egyptian Natural Loofah

Egyptian Natural Loofah 1

Produces Decent Lather, but Feels Prickly Against the Skin

Crafts Of Egypt's Egyptian Natural Loofah is made from natural loofah from Egypt. It comes flat and compressed, so make sure to soak it in warm water for fifteen minutes before use. Both the quantity and density of the lather earned high marks in our tests. Although it doesn't create loads of bubbles , our test coin didn’t sink in the lather. In exfoliation tests, while some testers reported effective removal of dead skin cells, most noticed little difference, suggesting it's not ideal for those wanting to smooth out rough skin.

During our skin feel tests, testers noted the slightly prickly, painful sensation from the rough, hard fibers, suggesting it could cause discomfort even for individuals with normal skin. While the large size enables thorough washing , including hard-to-reach back areas, it might not be the best choice for those who prioritize skin comfort.

The Body Shop Skin Sponge

Skin Sponge 1

Too Small to Clean Your Back and Rough on the Skin

The Body Shop Skin Sponge is made from recycled milk cartons. While it whips up a generous amount of lather, it’s not very dense. In our lather richness test, the coin sank in nine seconds, yielding less than impressive results. Those who enjoy washing with a rich, fluffy lather may find it lacking. In terms of exfoliation, the results were mixed . Some testers found it did not effectively remove dead skin cells, while others reported a reduction. If you struggle with rough skin, this sponge might leave you less than satisfied.

Due to its small palm-of-the-hand size, it might be difficult to wash the middle of your back . Testers also noted the rough texture, comparing it to the hardness of a dish sponge. It's likely not the best choice for those seeking a gentle skin feel.

We tested the loofahs on the following five criteria.

  • How effective is the exfoliation?
  • How much lather does it produce?
  • How rich is the lather?
  • How gentle is it on your skin?
  • How easy is it to wash your back?

Products we tested

  • Crafts Of Egypt | Egyptian Natural Loofah
  • DadyMart | Bath Shower Loofah Sponge
  • Equate Beauty | Gentle Exfoliation Bath Sponge
  • Metene | Bath Shower Loofah Sponge
  • Shower Bouquet | XL Bath Sponge | SB-4
  • The Body Shop | Skin Sponge
  • WhaleLife | Bath Body Poufs

Exfoliation

  • We used a skin cell checker to determine the amount of skin cells on someone's arm.
  • We lathered the loofah, washed their arm, and rinsed it off.
  • We dried any remaining moisture with a towel.
  • Then we again used the skin cell checker to measure how many dead skin cells the loofah removed.

Amount of Lather

  • We applied two pumps of body soap and about a half cup of water to the loofah, then kneaded it 30 times.
  • Then we measured the amount of lather produced.

Richness of Lather

  • We transferred the lather onto a plate, then placed a coin on the foam to see if it stayed afloat for 10 seconds.

Gentleness on the Skin

  • Does the loofah cause any pain?
  • Is the loofah too soft?

Ease of Back Washing

It's beneficial if your loofah can comfortably cover all areas of your back. So, our team of three women and two men rated each sponge, giving a higher rating to those that could easily reach the back.

  • First, thoroughly rinse off all the soap from the loofah.
  • Then make sure to let it dry in a cool, dry place.

While it might be convenient to hang it in the bathtub, doing so can promote the growth of bacteria and mold due to the moisture. After rinsing off the soap, try letting it dry on the bathroom counter or in a bedroom.

Sitti Soap bars are all-natural olive oil soap bars. Each bar is handmade using the traditional cold-press "Nabulsi" method, passed down from generation-to-generation of Palestinian women. We source our olive oil from local farms in Jerash, Jordan.

Small Natural bar.   Ideal for everyday face-washing, or leaving in your powder room for guests to enjoy. This small bar is long-lasting. Enjoy major benefits for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin, acne, or eczema.

Sitti’s all-natural loofah sponges are made from pure loofah plants. They are completely biodegradable and compostable. Use them to exfoliate in the shower or as an environmentally-friendly alternative to your kitchen sponges...take one step closer to being “zero waste” to the earth we all share.

Using a Sitti Soap Bar, rub it into the Loofah. The mesh-like texture makes it easy to foam using less soap with each use. Sitti’s Loofah Sponge is hard enough to exfoliate and scrub, and soft enough to protect skin (or other surfaces). Each sponge is durable for approximately 30-40 days. When you are finished with your Sitti Loofah Sponge, simply bury it in the soil or throw it in with your other compost materials!

What Is Loofah:   The loofah plant is a fast-growing vine native to Asia and Southeast Asia, belonging to the cucumber family. They are cultivated throughout the Middle East, including Jordan. The loofah fruit is similar to a cucumber but much bigger. The inside of this fruit develops strong fibers, which are perfect for exfoliating and cleaning!

One of the tiny details you never think about on your trip is your shower essentials. Sure, you probably obsess over downsizing your beauty products and toiletries, but what about your loofah or other cleansing items? Take a look at my round up of the best items to take on your travels!

Travel-Friendly Shower Essentials

Table of contents.

This may sound random, but one of the small details that confused me on my first trip to Europe was what bath accessories to bring.

The reason why this was an issue is because I planned on visiting multiple destinations in under two weeks and would only stay in each place for one or two nights. I didn’t want to have to repack a wet loofah in my bag every time. The friend that I was traveling with brought a small face towel, which never dried. Needless to say, that was a big mistake.

So, I did some research. Some people suggested that the most efficient item to bring was a quick dry travel washcloth. Others recommended I just skip it altogether and use a bar of soap and my hands.

Follow our ultimate guide to creating the perfect travel toiletries list and master the art of packing!

Shower Essentials Product Review

I’ve now been traveling for over nine years and thought I’d put together a list of shower essentials that I’ve found most useful on my adventures.

shower-essentials

Aquasentials Mesh Sponge

A travel loofah is easy to carry along on any journey

I looked for the best travel washcloth I could find, but I instead settled on this pouf scrubber by Aquasentials . It’s lightweight, dries relatively quickly, and is also easy to clean.

While a large option probably wouldn’t take up too much space, a smaller travel loofah is best for keeping your belongings to a minimum. If you use a backpack as a personal item, then you can easily attach it to the outside and allow it to air dry while on the go.

Read these tips on  how to minimize toiletry products  for even more tips!

shower-essentials

Earth Therapeutics Gloves

Exfoliating mitts are perfect shower essentials for an extended stay

I came across a forum back in 2008 discussing suggested items for long trips and these Earth Therapeutics gloves came highly recommended. Many travelers said they were efficient and best used with a bar of soap.

I took their advice only and gave the gloves a try, but they took a long time to dry, so they weren’t my preferred choice in the end. However, if you’re staying in one place for a long time and prefer to use solid soap, then you might like these.

Avoid taking liquids in your carryon by replacing them with solid toiletries  and  travel wipes !

shower-essentials

Botanic Touch Body Pads

This exfoliating travel loofa takes up minimum suitcase space

I like traveling with a Botanic Touc h loofah when I’m going to be in an extremely hot, humid, and/or dusty destination. Not only is it thin, but it also doesn’t add much weight to your bag, and you won’t feel grimy and gross after a sweaty day of sightseeing.

Here are a few more tips on how to stay sweat-free when you’re traveling!

shower-essentials

Mr. Pumice Callus Remover

Pumice bars are shower necessities for your feet

Traveling to dusty destinations such as Vietnam and India or planning on doing a safari adventure in Africa ? Prepare to tackle dirty feet with a foot scrubber like this one by Mr. Pumice . I cut mine in half so it takes up less space, and I get double the use out of it. It’s also featherlight so it doesn’t add any weight to my bag.

I love these bars – not only do they keep my feet soft by removing dead, dry skin cells but they also help me feel cleaner overall. My feet love to be in sandals, so this item is a must!

Here are a few more of my grooming essentials !

shower-essentials

Sea to Summit Tek Towel

Scrub on the run with an absorbent and easy to store travel towel

Don’t pack a full-size towel, ever! They’re bulky space wasters and are NOT travel-friendly at all, especially when you’re moving from place to place frequently.

You won’t believe how many times I’ve seen travelers lugging around big, damp towels—not only are they not efficient for drying off, they get stinky. Plus, they’re pretty gross when shoved in with all your clean stuff.

If you’re staying at a hotel or an Airbnb , you’ll have towels waiting for you. However, if you’re camping , going on safari , scuba diving , snorkeling , traveling on a budget , or staying in hostels , bringing your own towel like this one by Sea to Summit is a must! It’s quick to dry when you’re on the go.

I ALWAYS have a travel towel in my suitcase. Even if none of the above scenarios apply, I can use it to wrap my hair or dry off on the beach. I prefer it against my wet skin to a sarong. If you get one, don’t plan to wrap it around your entire body—they aren’t very large.

A   Turkish towel is also a stylish option for female travelers.

Take a look at our best beach towels for travel. Hardly any suitcase space required!

shower-essentials

Turbie Twist Microfiber Hair Towel

A hair towel is one of the great must-have shower products

I travel with a small hair towel like this one by Turbie Twist . It’s super absorbent, helps hair dry quicker, and minimizes overall prep time.

It was particularly helpful when I was on my round-the-world backpacking trip and stayed at budget guesthouses or hostels, which hardly ever provide towels. It’s also great for home use.

We’ve rounded up our favorite travel towels !

shower-essentials

Travelon Ripstop Sacks

Bring a loofah travel case to store all your bathroom essentials

If you’re on the move and find that accessories like your travel loofa haven’t dried, use a wet/dry bag like this one by Travelon to prevent other items in your suitcase from getting wet.

You can also use the bags to store your bathing suit!

Take a look at this list of other luggage organizers !

shower-essentials

Betty Dain Mold Resistant Lined Shower Cap

Steer clear of mold and mildew with this waterproof, reusable shower cap

If you don’t feel like washing your hair every day, put your dynamite ‘do in a stylish hair cover by Betty Dain . Not only does it look funky in black and white, but it’s leak-free and will dry quickly when not in use.

When you get home, you can just toss this durable cap in a washing machine with other accessories like your travel washcloth, but make sure to air dry it to extend its use.

Ipanema Ana Tan Thong

Keep your feet free of fungus with these Ipanema sandals

If you stay in a hostel, you’ll certainly share a shower with your fellow travelers. So, protect your tootsies with thick, rubber thongs like the Ana Tan model shown above. They’re durable, easy to pack and will go the distance with you on this and many adventures to come.

Be sure to read our complete guide to packing toiletries  here . It walks you through, step by step, how to choose what to pack, how to downsize what you have, and how to pack it.

Do a test run to see if everything fits in your toiletry bag. If your belongings don’t fit, consider using multi-use products such as a shampoo/conditioner combo, using conditioner as shaving cream, or baby shampoo for your hair and body.

If you’ll be traveling for a longer time, you can buy toiletries at your destination.

How to ‘visit’ 25 cities of Russia without leaving Moscow (PHOTOS)

mini travel loofah

Travel by train from St. Petersburg to Moscow, climb Mount Elbrus by funicular and get stuck in traffic near Moscow City. All in one day. In the Moscow diorama museum ‘Tsar-Maket’ ('Tsar-layout') you can see Russia on a 1:87 scale model and meet its tiny inhabitants.

Travel Russia by a mini-train

mini travel loofah

The first city where your acquaintance with Russia begins is Pskov with its ancient kremlin and giant train station. Just like on a real railway, apart from trains, there’s a locomotive repair depot, as well as several tracks with railroad switches and even people who’ve boarded the wrong trains!

mini travel loofah

In general, trains and roads are the main theme of the layout. Its creators came up with dozens of different routes between settlements and, just like in real life, dispatchers follow them and promptly conduct repairs.

mini travel loofah

Next stop is St. Petersburg. With its Palace Bridge that is drawn twice a day. With St. Isaac’s Cathedral, shipyards, a wedding on the embankment during a white night, a tourist bus that takes people along famous avenues. And a bit of irony about the climatic features of the city – it rains the whole “night” (or, as the locals say, it has rained in St. Petersburg since the day of its founding in 1703).

mini travel loofah

Moscow, meanwhile, meets you with giant and very realistic traffic near the skyscrapers of Moscow City. Unlike cars in other regions, Moscow ones are not moving, they just shine their headlights sadly and honk their horns. But there’s a bonus for “pedestrians” – down the road from the traffic a chocolate factory is in operation, which can be run with a push of a single button to get a real chocolate bar from its window.

mini travel loofah

In the middle of Moscow, not far from the Kremlin, of course, an archaeological excavation is underway. “Underground” you can see the Novoslobodskaya metro station and its astonishing mosaics ( we talked about them here ). Just like in the big format, trains arrive at the station every two minutes.

mini travel loofah

From Moscow, we travel to the south of the country and find ourselves in Rostov-on-Don. What is Rostov without soccer? Every 11 minutes, “evening” comes and a giant stadium hosts a soccer match with fans gathering round to cheer for their favorite team.

mini travel loofah

We move on to the main sea and mountain resorts of Russia. The highest point – of course, on Mount Elbrus, towards which travelers with backpacks strive.

mini travel loofah

In the underground part of the mountain, of course, speleologists discover fantastic creatures.

mini travel loofah

To reach Volga Region, we go through the countryside with cozy wooden cabins, animal farms and small vintage stores.

mini travel loofah

There’s even “burned down” and “abandoned” buildings.

mini travel loofah

Kaliningrad Region is located, obviously, aside from the main part of the diorama. You’ll immediately recognize its cathedral in the middle of the city and the tourist Fishing Village.

mini travel loofah

The Tsar- Maket ’s “Easter eggs”

The ‘Tsar-Maket’ opened only in 2021, but 30 people have been working on it for five years and it is still a work in progress. They constantly add details, attractions and, of course, new narratives and new human models. As of today, the country is “populated” by about 100,000 tiny people. But not just people. If you take a good look, you’ll see very strange characters.

mini travel loofah

At a rock-music festival, ninja turtles are ordering pizza; in Moscow, Kazimir Malevich paints from nature his abstract ‘Sportsmen’ on a roof.

mini travel loofah

In a sleeping area of Moscow, you can see a replica of the famous photo ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’.

mini travel loofah

In St. Petersburg, the four musicians from The Beatles cross a road in a familiar style.

mini travel loofah

As the designers told us, they don’t know how many “Easter eggs” their colleagues hid in the diorama. For now, they have counted more than 30, but these ideas come to them spontaneously.

This is mini electric bus from mini Moscow.

This is mini electric bus from mini Moscow.

Right now, the designers are working on the continuation of the diorama in Siberia. The territory is vast, but they promise to finish it within a year. We’ll share a secret with you: we got a sneak peek at Lake Baikal and it was very impressive!

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

mini travel loofah

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

‘Bigger than the Super Bowl’: Americans are spending big on eclipse tourism

Eclipse viewing parties are everywhere, from alpaca farms in texas to ski slopes in vermont.

mini travel loofah

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of the total solar eclipse in April, there’s no shortage of options. Six Flags Over Texas is hosting a “Solar Coaster” viewing party. Holland America has a 22-day Solar Eclipse Cruise. And after filling up one path-of-totality flight, Delta Air Lines has added a second, promising unadulterated views from “extra-large” windows.

But almost everything is sold out.

The total solar eclipse, which will be visible from more than a dozen states , is fueling a small spending boom across the nation. Hotels are booked, campgrounds are full and rental cars are nowhere to be found around the April 8 event. States including Arkansas and Indiana are expecting record-breaking travel and spending.

“This is likely going to be the single biggest tourism event we’ve ever had,” said Michael Pakko, an economist at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, who is projecting a statewide windfall of $105 million. “Obviously, it’s going to be a short duration — a long weekend — but for that concentrated period of time, it’s going to be a very big deal.”

It’s also rare. A total solar eclipse — in which the moon completely covers the sun for a few minutes, creating a pitch-black “path of totality” — is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many. It’s been 99 years since New York had one, and 218 years for Ohio. This time around, the path of totality will stretch from Texas to Maine, covering parts of several states, including Missouri, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, along the way.

The boost to those local economies could be significant. Texas, which is expected to get the biggest influx of visitors, could pocket $428 million in eclipse-related spending, according to Ray Perryman, an economist in Waco. Johnson County, Ind., is forecasting as much as $25 million in extra revenue, while Rochester, N.Y., expects about $10 million.

Americans emerged from the pandemic ready to shell out, especially for memorable experiences. The total solar eclipse is the ultimate example, with the next one being two decades away for most of the United States. In all, as many as 3.7 million people are expected to travel to the path of totality for the eclipse, according to estimates from geographer Michael Zeiler.

Robust consumer spending — which has continued despite high prices — has kept the economy chugging along at a time when many had feared a recession. Spending on international travel and live entertainment surged nearly 30 percent last year, five times the rate of overall spending growth, as Americans splurged on European vacations and Taylor Swift concerts. Eclipse travel is expected to fuel another mini spending boom.

Indiana, for example, is preparing for a record 500,000 visitors — more than seven times the attendance at the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis, according to Amy Howell, vice president of tourism at the Indiana Destination Development Corporation.

State officials in transportation, natural resources and homeland security have been meeting for months to iron out logistics, such as port-a-potty availability and traffic plans, she said. Some schools are closed that day, and garbage collection will be on hold.

“We know how to host big events, but this is huge — bigger than the Super Bowl and the Indy 500 put together, plus the state fair, which is 18 days long,” she said. “We’re expecting to have all of those visitors in one day.”

A thousand miles away, Steven Wright is making similar calculations at his Vermont ski resort. The 900 rooms at Jay Peak have been sold out since last spring, with the earliest eclipse-related reservations arriving five years ago. In all, some 8,000 people are expected to take part in the resort’s festivities, which start at $365 for two people.

A Pink Floyd cover band will play the “Dark Side of the Moon” album right as the eclipse begins. Also unfolding then: a 50-person wedding on the mountain’s peak.

“It’s an awful lot of buildup for a few minutes,” said Wright, the property’s general manager.

These types of viewing parties are cropping up everywhere, including at alpaca farms in Texas, Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway . For those seeking a more exclusive experience, T.E.I. Tours and Travel is offering private path-of-totality flights starting at $9,750 per person.

The Planetary Society, a nonprofit headed by Bill Nye “the Science Guy,” is hosting a 1,000-person camp-out at a wedding venue in Fredericksburg, Tex. There will be astronomy talks in the glass chapel and telescopes and games on the lawn. Tickets are $325 a pop, and so far the attendee list includes people from nearly all 50 states, plus Finland, Japan and Spain.

“We are huge space nerds, and seeing a total solar eclipse, it stirs something deeply profound inside of us,” spokeswoman Danielle Gunn said. “People travel all over the world to see this — and once you see one total eclipse, you get why.”

This will be the third total eclipse for Nazmus Nasir. He and his wife began planning their trip from Boston to Marble Falls, Tex., seven years ago, after seeing the last one in Tennessee. They nabbed an Airbnb in 2022, as soon as bookings went online, and plan to drive the 30 hours to central Texas in a rented minivan with their 11-month-old son.

“I don’t think words can describe how it feels to be under totality,” said Nasir, a 34-year-old software engineer and amateur astro-photographer. “Nothing really prepares you for it. I knew what was happening, but my brain still couldn’t believe what I was looking at.”

That’s the experience Otilia Vindfeldt Jensen is hoping for. She and her husband are flying from Denmark to Mesquite, Tex., for the town’s “ Solar Rodeo .”

“The way people talk about it, there’s so much awe and they find it difficult to find words for what they’ve seen,” she said. “I really want to be a part of that.”

Jensen, a 31-year-old clinical researcher, and her husband talked about it for over a year, she said, before finally booking $1,500 flights last month. The couple plans to spend three weeks in the United States, most of it driving across Texas.

The rush of visitors is expected to give many small towns and rural areas an unprecedented boost. In Greenville, Maine, the Lodge at Moosehead Lake has been booked for months in anticipation of the eclipse. But people are still calling — even offering to pay for a spot on the inn’s back deck or its parking lot, owner Beverly Burgess said.

Burgess has turned down those requests and is instead focused on figuring out how to manage the crowds. She’s loading up on extra food, has a generator on hand in case the power goes out and has hired a parking attendant for the day of the eclipse, when Greenville’s population is projected to swell from about 1,400 to more than 30,000.

“This is certainly more people than we’ve ever seen before,” she said. “It’s a lot for this little town.”

Julieann Taylor, 66, is determined to see the eclipse — and has hotel rooms booked in three states, just in case. The retired nurse, who lives in northwest Indiana, is planning to drive to Arkansas with her husband, sister, adult son and dachshund, Dieter. But if that falls through or the weather is bad , she’s also reserved rooms closer to home, in Indianapolis and Findlay, Ohio.

Taylor saw the partial eclipse in 2017, but wishes she’d experienced totality. “In that moment, I said, ‘If we’re still alive, we’re going to go to the next one,’” she said. “This is probably our last chance in our lifetime, so we’re going to make the effort.”

Taylor has spent about $2,500 on hotel bookings and says she can barely contain her excitement. Her husband, though, is less enthused: “He’s just not into this at all,” she said. “He’s complaining, ‘Why are we going? We could be going somewhere fun other than Arkansas.’”

In any case, Taylor is powering on. She’s poring over satellite maps to find the best viewing areas and filling a Yeti cooler with water, fruit and cheese sticks in case they’re stuck on the road for long stretches.

“If we miss it,” she said, “it won’t be for a lack of trying.”

Moscow transport: metro, bus & taxi in Moscow | How does it work?

  • August 15, 2023

Moscow transport: metro, bus & taxi in Moscow

Moscow transport: how does it work? Here we summarized all you need to know about Moscow city public transport (bus, metro, card Troika), but also taxi in Moscow.

Distances in Moscow: walking in Moscow

Walking. The geolocation of your accommodation in Moscow is important, because the distances are great. You’re definitely not going to be able to do it all on foot. Moscow is the largest city in Europe with more than 12 million intramural inhabitants. Besides, Moscow is made for giants, because everything is big: the avenues, the buildings, the metro stations! So, the place of your accommodation is very important. You can check our blog post: Where to stay in Moscow?

Good to know! We have written 2 other blog posts that could be helpful: Maps of Moscow and Moscow Airport Transfer.

Public transport in Moscow: prices and how does it work?

Even if you are going to be able to visit many interesting places around Red Square (see the article: Moscow Red Square ), you will certainly take the metro to get around, but also to see the most beautiful stations . Furthermore, among public transport the metro remains the fastest solution in Moscow.

Good to know! Public transport is free for children under the age of 7. More specifically, 1 adult may not purchase a ticket for 1 child under the age of 7. If you are 2 adults, it is therefore for 2 children that the trips will be free.

Tips for Moscow city transport

Here are my tips to make travel more pleasant and optimized:

  • Avoid to take Moscow City transport during rush hours. Especially for ground transportation (lots of traffic jams). You will lose a lot of time, especially for city center trips by land transport. Peak hours correspond to office hours: the standard working day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
  • Use a mobile application to estimate your journey time as accurately as possible. In Europe, as in Russia, we use CityMapper . It is a free application that allows you to calculate your trips and see all the possibilities to get from one place to another. For the application to work, you must have an Internet connection: either through your French package which can prove to be expensive; either by wifi, in your hotel, in a cafe (very common in Moscow) or by using the free Wi-Fi of the city of Moscow! To download CityMapper on your mobile, just type its name in AppStore or GooglePlay . Then choose the city where you want to use it.
  • Buy a transportation card. If you plan to take public transport several times a day or if you come to Moscow for a university or work exchange, it is more economical to take a transport card. I talk about it later in the article.
  • Further info about airport transfer here: How to get from airport to Moscow?

Moscow metro: the fastest way to get around Moscow

Beautiful! The Moscow Metro is considered the most beautiful in the world! You can find out which stations are worth a visit in my article: The most beautiful stations in Moscow .

Metro timetables. Times vary by station, but approximately the Moscow Metro is open from 5.30 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Below you can find a map of the Moscow metro, with an example of a metro station. You can find other Moscow maps here .

mini travel loofah

Metro prices in Moscow

  • A single trip = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
  • Price for transporting a suitcase in the metro = 60 rubles
  • With a transport card , the price of the journey decreases. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about troika card below.
  • You can also pay with ApplePay or GooglePay.

Where to buy metro tickets?

  • At the cash desks , where you can buy everything: transport card or one-way tickets. Small flat: most of the time, the employees of the metro do not speak English very well. But they are used to it, you will be able to understand each other.
  • At the English terminals , where you can also buy everything. See below for more details on terminal purchases.

Moscow City transport taxi

Bus, trolleybus, tram in Moscow

Avoid at peak hours. The city center can be literally blocked! Mobile applications are very useful to estimate travel times.

Tram. Trams are very nice to do. It’s a bit special. Tram stops are hard on the road. The cars then stop and let the pedestrians get on or off the tram.

Price of a bus, trolleybus or tram ticket

  • One way = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
  • With a transport card , the price drops. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about transport cards below.

Where to buy bus, trolleybus or tram tickets?

To drivers. There are no controllers on each bus, as in St. Petersburg.

By purchasing a transport card in advance at a metro station. There are few terminals installed near bus, tram or trolley stations.

Good to know! It is possible to pay on the metro, but also on buses with your smartphone or a contactless card (Apple Pay or Google Pay)! The price is 44 rubles per way. Beware, however, of bank charges, as for other ruble payments in Russia. See article: How to pay in Russia?

Transport cards in Moscow

Two most interesting solutions for taking Moscow City transport:

troika card

Troika card prices

  • 1 metro, bus, trolley bus or tram journey: 40 rubles (instead of 57)
  • 90 minutes in public transport (regardless of the number of changes): 62 rubles

How to buy a Troika card?

  • Cost of purchase : 50 rubles. You can get it at all metro stations.
  • Refill . Once the card is purchased, you must reload it. You can choose the amount freely.
  • Where? It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card.

The Troika card is interesting if you:

  • want to take advantage of lower transportation rates.
  • stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, VIE, university exchange), but do not go for frequent daily trips.
  • don’t stay long, but you know roughly how many trips you’re going to make or you don’t mind reloading the card often. Why? It is possible, but long and complicated to recover the initial amount of 50 rubles, as well as the rest on the card.

How much does the unlimited Yediny card (central Moscow area) cost?

  • 1 day = 24 hours = 230 rubles
  • 3 days = 438 rubles
  • 30 days = 2170 rubles
  • There are no unlimited cards for 2, 4, 5, 6 or 7 days.

More details: Moscow transport website

How to buy a Yediny card?

It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card. The card is activated (the countdown starts) at the time of validation and not at the time of purchase. The card must be activated within 10 days of purchase (day of purchase included).

Here are the pictures of the automatic terminal (in English), when buying a Yédiny card.

mini travel loofah

The Yediny card is interesting if you:

  • stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, university exchange), but make frequent daily trips.
  • do not stay in Moscow for a long time, but do not want to estimate your trips in advance (Troika card) while enjoying the unlimited.

Our experience with transport cards in Moscow

When I was working in Moscow, I used the Troika card. It was the most economical solution for me. We also used it later when we both went there. On the other hand, the last time we were there, we took the Yediny card and finally we found it more practical, even if it turned out to be less economical in the end.

Our verdict (compared to our travel habits): budget side, the Troika card is better. But for less headache (how much to put on the card? How much is left?…), The unlimited Yediny card is more practical.

Boat trips in Moscow

There are several boat trips on the Moskva River. In addition, it is even possible to buy an unlimited day ticket. For more information, you can then consult the article: Take a boat trip on the Moskva River.

Getting around in Moscow by taxi

There are several types of taxis in Moscow:

  • First, official taxis (sign on the roof);
  • Then individuals who do this out of the blue;
  • And finally Moscow taxis via mobile applications (private drivers or taxi agencies).

Good to know. The cost of a taxi ride to the city center in Moscow is around 500 rubles. If you want to avoid negotiations, use the taxi apps in Moscow.

Uber Moscow: NO.

It works before, but not anymore, because Uber does not use the classic app in Russia (they have created a special app for Russia, only this app works now). So, you have to download the special Uber Russia app… but this application is only available on the Russian AppStore, so it cannot be downloaded for us. Uber’s competitors in Russia such as YandexTaxi or Gett can be used.

Use the YandexTaxi app to take a taxi in Moscow

The Yandex company is the Russian Google. Initially a search engine, it also offers several services. YandexTaxi is then the taxi service in Moscow, it works everywhere in Russia. You can download the app from the AppStore or GooglePlay . Thanks to this application, it is possible to pay the taxi in cash (by default) or by bank card directly (to be specified in the application). If you are thinking of paying in cash, then have rather small denominations so that the driver can give you change. The application is now in French.

How does YandexTaxi work?

  • First, it detects your geolocation.
  • Then you indicate your arrival position using the Latin or Cyrillic alphabet.
  • It then offers you the estimated prices for each range (thrifty, business, etc.).
  • You choose, confirm and wait for the driver to arrive.
  • You identify the driver with the indicated license plate, then at the end YandexTaxi collects the race via your bank card (do not forget to put your card info before using the app, otherwise pay in cash).

Other solution. You can also book a taxi in advance on KiwiTaxi website . It’s easy!

Yandex Taxi Moscow

Public transport and taxi in Moscow: summary

Getting around Moscow is quite simple, as Moscow City transport is well developed. However, because of traffic jams, the metro is the quickest solution. It isn’t an issue, because the Moscow metro is very clean and beautiful. Taxis are rather cheap and easy to find thanks to mobile applications like, for example, YandexTaxi.
