What to see in Cusco

Glimpse into the glorious past of the Inca Empire by visiting some of the most revered archaeological sites in Cusco. The stories behind these fascinating sites will come alive and offer a tantalizing glimpse of what’s still to come - Machu Picchu.

Massive stone walls at Sacsayhuamán, an important Inca fortress situated above the city of Cusco.

  • Sacsayhuaman

Sacsayhuaman was the largest stone structure that the Inca Empire constructed. Built over 500 years ago it still stands tall today and houses the famous Inti Raymi festival every year in June. The stone boulders show the Inca style of architecture with blocks expertly cut and placed without the use of mortar.

Visitors at the Cristo Blanco, a large, white statue of Jesus overlooking the city of Cusco.

Cristo Blanco

For a moment, you might think you're in Rio de Janeiro when you look at the Cristo Blanco statue of Jesus with his arms outstretched overlooking Cusco city. The White Christ is close to the Sacsayhuaman ruins and is a fantastic lookout point over Cusco city.

A tourist walking past the twelve-angled stone, one of the finest examples of Inca stonemasonry.

Twelve-Angled Stone

The Incas were famous for the way they shaped stones to perfectly fit within one another like a giant puzzle piece. The Twelve angled stone in Cusco city is a 12-sided rock piece that fits perfectly beside the neighboring stones.

Coricancha (the Inca temple of the sun) and the Santo Domingo Convent built on top of it.

The Temple of the Sun: Coricancha

Coricancha (Qorikancha) was a temple dedicated to the Incan sun god Inti and was once the most important temple of the Inca Empire. Builtin the 1400s, this temple is now an example of how the Spanish repurposed Incan architecture for their own purposes.

The Plaza de Armas (main square) of Cusco, surrounded by colonial-era buildings.

The Cusco Main Square

The Cusco Plaza de Armas or Cusco main plaza is a lively gathering place in the heart of Cusco. Here you’ll find the Fountain of Pachacuti, the Cusco Cathedral, storefronts, restaurants, and even McDonalds!

A narrow alley leading past a historical house in San Blas, Cusco's artisan district.

The San Blas Neighborhood

San Blas is the artisan quarter of Cusco city and is only a short walk from Cusco’s main plaza. This neighborhood dates back to the Inca empire and boasts some of the best views of Cusco. Rest at the Plazoleta de San Blas where you’re likely to spot artisans selling their handcrafts.

The multicolored stripes of Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, located a few hours from Cusco.

The Seven Colored Mountain or Rainbow Mountain is a challenging high-altitude trek that rewards you with views that have made this trek Instagram famous. Colorful minerals in the soil stripe the mountain range in a natural rainbow of red, green, blue, and yellow.

Rooftops scattered throughout a field overlooked by a snow-capped mountain in the Sacred Valley.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas

The Sacred Valley is a lush valley surrounded by the Andes mountains. Incan ruins and off-the-beaten-path adventures await! Top Sacred Valley sights include the Maras salt mines, the Moray concentric circles, the Ollantaytambo ruins, and the luxury hotel properties nestled in serene landscapes.

Various types of potatoes for sale at the San Pedro Market, the largest in Cusco.

San Pedro Market

The bustling San Pedro Market is where you can go to find oddities like love potions, flavorful fruits from all over Peru, Andean textiles and alpaca sweaters. Bring the local currency, the Peruvian Sol, along with you here, bargaining is allowed.

Rock formations and Inca stone walls with a forest backdrop at the Q'enqo archaeological site.

Qenqo comes from the Quecha word for “zig-zag” and is one of the largest Incan temples. Located near the Sacsayhuamán ruins, this Inca ruin is an impressive example of the Incas ability to carve stone though its purpose is still a mystery.

The stone walls of Puka Pukara, an Inca ruin surrounded by grassy fields and rugged hills.

  • Puka Pukara

The archaeological ruins of Puka Pukara are close to Tambomachay so these two iconic sites are often paired together on a Cusco City tour. Like most Inca ruins, the purpose of this site is debated, though it is believed to have housed soldiers when the Inca was visiting the baths of Tambomachay.

Visitors on a walkway at the impressive Inca archaeological site of Tambomachay.

  • Tambomachay

At Tambomachay, terraces take a different spin than the agricultural ones you’ll see in different locations through the Inca Empire. Here they feed water into different pools making archaeologists suspect that this was a type of Inca spa.

Ultimate Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu - 5 Days

The trek was amazing! Beautiful views, comfortable sleeping arrangements and delicuius food. Miguel, our guide, was incredibly knowledgeable, encouraging and funny. He knows so much about every step of the trek and you can tell it is his passion. Valvino and Habran, chef and su chef, made so much delicious food, evening adding a few cakes they baked on stove top. So much beautifully prepared food, you never go hungry. Franklin, our porter, was quick and made sure each tent was set up perfectly. I have a lot of respect for this team that not only surpassed us in hiking, but doing so with heavy loads on their backs. Truly a great experience!

I organized a private tour for my family of 10 and Leoned from Waman Adventures helped us adjust everything to our requirements. If there was a rating above Excellent I would gladly give it to this agency. Gabriel and the entire team are very professional, friendly and efficient. Before writing this review I was thinking about what could be improved, but in reality the service was so excellent that I can't find the words! Our driver Brayan was very charismatic, in the hotel Ayni where we stayed they gave us solutions to everything we asked for, the girls are so nice! Thank you Tourradar for having Waman Adventures on your Peru team.

Our guide Edwin was a very enthusiastic and professional guide who helped us with all our questions and needs. Which was awesome! Next to the guide and cook we also had porters whom carried all our staff from day one till the last day. Tents, food, drinks, clothes, etc. The guys were super friendly and made our trip even more special. We would highly recommend the tour and also the organization! 06 Days Cusco Machu Picchu - Humantay Lake And Rainbow Mountain

Our Peru trip was extremely organized and tons of fun. Leoned was our organizer and he would send us a detailed description of what to expect the next day. The instructions included who will be our guide, what to bring, what the day entails. It was perfect for us in that we were able to plan accordingly. 2 of the 5 days we had a guide Paul. He was so much fun to spend the days with. We learned great information about the local traditions, history, food and nature. I have never in all my travels had someone who learned about and truly was immersed in what he was sharing. Additionally helped us get great pictures even if the weather was overcast. David our leader for the hike into Humantay lake was enthusiastic and fun! The travel into and out was made better by his encouragement. Overall I would book again with this company and would recommend to friends.

Classic Inca Trail Trek 4D/3N to Machu Picchu (Group service )

Alpaca expeditions was wonderful - We booked through Tourradar due to allowing us to pay the same in AUD that alpaca directly would make us pay in USD and we didnt have all the extra international fees on top. Cant complain about Tourradar's process - dealt directly with the company once booked. Would use them again. Marisol and Yoel were amazing guides - ask for them if you can! They had the best banter and brought such a warm and family energy to the group (even though theyre just friends)

7 Day Inca Jungle Adventure To Machu Picchu with Mountain Bike, Rafting, Zip Line and Trek. Tour

7 Day Inca Jungle Adventure To Machu Picchu with Mountain Bike, Rafting, Zip Line and Trek.

This was an amazing adventure. Let me say first off that I am glad the first day is basically a free day to help acclimate you to the altitude. By the end of the night, my head was pounding but the next morning I felt a whole lot better. The second day was pretty easy but we saw a few good sights. We learned about how the natives dye the wool and alpaca with natural substances and how they twirl it into yard to make anything and everything. We saw the salt mines in Maras but due to heavy rain and even snow a few days earlier the salt was more muddy than salty but still a cool sight to see. Chinchero was amazing as well to see just how they lived way back then and to experience walking through on the steps that had been built centuries ago. In Moray, they had these step like plateaus dug deep into the earth in circles in which they grew and perfected the growing conditions for crops. It was real interesting to see these even today. Day 3 was by far the best day of the trip. You take a bus up to about 14300 feet and ride or coast down the mountain on a mountain bike. The views are amazing. You are literally in the clouds and passing by streams of water all while being passed by passenger buses. After that is lunch and off to river rafting. Be prepared to get wet but it is a blast. Day 4 was an ass kicker for me. I'm 49 and in decent shape but hiking all day on the mountain trails was challenging to say the least but I'm glad I did it. We took several breaks and stops along the way so that was awesome. Day 5 We wake up and take a bus to the zipline and suspension bridge. It was also a blast but if you are scared of heights you might not be able to stomach it. The ziplines are very high and very long. The suspension bridge steps are at least 3 feet apart and towards the end they get even wider apart. You are always hooked so no real safety issue unless you don't trust the equipment. After ziplining we hiked for 3 or 4 hours to Aquas Calientes where we stayed the night in order to get up early for Machu Picchu in the morning. Day 6 It was a rough morning for myself as I found the happy hour in Aquas Calientes to be very fun and interesting with some of my tour mates. 6 AM breakfast and 6:30 on the bus to Machu Picchu. This site is breath taking and unbelievable to experience in person. Pictures do not do it justice. It was couple hours up there with our guide and then we took the bus, or you could hike back to Aquas Calientes. I think I was back by about 10:30 AM and just walked around the town and ate some brunch. They train departed at 4 pm to Ollyantaytambo and was a two hour winding ride. Our van driver picked us up and took us back to Cusco, another two hour drive. It was a very long day for two and a half hours of seeing Machu Picchu, very long. Day 7 Final day is a free day and your ride to the airport. I enjoyed walking around the town until it was time to go. One important thing you should know is that once you start Day 3 with the mountain biking, you must only carry a backpack with everything you need. I don't think they mention this in the tour info. No luggage will be taken. I highly suggest a good size backpacking backpack and only bring what you need. I had only a hiking camelback with some storage. I survived but it was very interesting. Bring a good size back pack! I cannot stress that enough.

What people love about Peru Tours from Cusco

The Ultimate Salkantay Trek 5D/5N with glass cabañas & hobbit house + hot tub jacuzzi was ABSOLUTELY amazing. Would recommend this trek to everyone. Our tour guides Javier and Victor were phenomenal. You could ask any question and they knew the answer and if you needed anything? They would immediately take care of it. We woke up everyday with an amazing view and a cup of hot tea. We were always the first one to arrive at a beautiful location to take pictures without any other hikers blocking the view. The food was delicious! Go book this trek if you love hiking, beautiful views and an adventure.
Such an amazing experience. Roger our guide was a great guy, very experienced and full of local knowledge and stories. We were so well fed by our chef who never ceased to amaze us by producing fantastic local food every meal. The porters made sure everything was perfect and that we had everything we needed - even hot water bottles on a freezing cold night.

Amazing Experience!

After a lot of careful research, we decided to ask Sacred Valley Company to prepare a full Peru Itinerary for the three of us. The package included the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and the Rainbow Mountain.

I would highly recommend them for all of your other Peru package vacations.

Hotel to Hotel service

Regarding the transportation provided by Alpaca Expeditions, we are committed to delivering a quality service. We strive to ensure that passengers feel supported throughout their journey. To achieve this, we coordinate closely with our guides and representatives to ensure timely pick-up at the start of their tours. Additionally, we have representatives responsible for escorting our passengers to their hotels at the conclusion of any tour.

hotel to hotel service

Our drivers are not only trained in customer service but also come properly uniformed, and many are fluent in English.

Typically, all transportation types are included in each of our services. For instance, if you have booked a trekking tour, we will pick you up early, typically between 4 AM and 5 AM. When visiting Cusco, it's important to note that traffic here is generally moderate. However, there are peak traffic times, such as between 7 AM and 8 AM, which coincide with school hours, and in the evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Therefore, if you have a flight during these times, it's crucial to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance. The drivers of Alpaca Expeditions ensure their vehicles are prepared with all necessities before each service. They are acutely aware that delays can lead to missed trains, flights, or other connections. Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Personal Porter of 7KG

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

personal porter

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

Clases de Cocina

Alpaca Expeditions offers its passengers the chance to experience local cooking. We aim to immerse trekkers in Inca life by walking them through the original Inca paths and teaching them about Inca culture. Food is a significant part of Inca life, making it a special element in any tour or trek with Alpaca Expeditions.

cooking classes

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. As you learn to prepare and cook Peruvian specialties, you will also see firsthand how such elaborate meals can be created on a small campsite stove.

Enjoy a cooking class in the mountains and be sure to take plenty of photos, just in case your friends won't believe your incredible experience.

Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

satellite phones

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

toilet tent

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.

There are four airlines that operate round-trip flights between Lima and Cusco: LATAM Airlines, AVIANCA Airlines, Star Peru, and Peruvian Airlines. They all offer similar schedules and in-flight service, but we generally recommend LATAM or AVIANCA Airlines, as they tend to be more accommodating when unexpected cancellations or delays occur.

In Peru, 220 volts, 60 Hz frequency, and A/B /C type plugs are used.

Why Go To Cusco

Cusco, known as the archaeological capital of the Americas, is home to a storied history that included the rise and fall of the Inca Empire followed by the invasion of Spanish conquistadors in the early 1500s. Today, remnants of both eras share the narrow city streets – from centuries-old baroque cathedrals to exquisite stone masonry – creating a rare collision of Andean and Spanish styles that makes Cusco like no other place on earth.

The city has come out of the shadow of Peru’s capital, Lima , in recent decades. Millions of tourists make the pilgrimage from Cusco and the Sacred Valley to get a glimpse of South America's greatest spectacle:  Machu Picchu . Discovered by American explorer Hiram Bingham in the early 20th century, the fabled ruins are one of the most impressive architectural feats of the ancient world. If you're planning a visit to Machu Picchu while in Cusco, make the most of your time with these tips . But don't let this UNESCO World Heritage Site be the only thing you see while in Cusco. This enchanting city offers more: from the glimmering Qorikancha  (Temple of the Sun) to the scrumptious Andean cuisine. It only takes a day to be charmed by this significant Peruvian city and all its wonders.

Cusco Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Cusco is from June to mid-September. Though temperatures hover in the mid- to upper 60s throughout the year, the city sees fewer rain showers during its winter months. Still, this is peak tourist season, so expect plenty of fellow trekkers beside you as marvel at iconic sites. To escape swells of tourists and high room rates, visit during May or between late September and early November. Avoid visiting between late November and April, when heavy downpours delay and dampen exploration. Whenever you decide to plan your trip, bring warm clothing to arm yourself from the chilly nighttime temperatures, which dip into the low 30s and 40s.

Weather in Cusco

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

  • Acclimate with coca tea Surpassing 11,000 feet, Cusco's steep elevation takes some getting used to. Combat altitude sickness with mate de coca , a local herbal tea served at most hotels and restaurants.
  • Watch your step While it's tempting to walk along the walls of ancient ruins, keep in mind that the stones have loosened over the last several hundred years. Your balancing act could damage their well-crafted masonry  –  not to mention your own body.
  • Rely on bottled water Tap water here is not safe to drink. Instead, quench your thirst with bottled water.
  • Plan ahead If you're hoping to see Machu Picchu while in Cusco, reserve your ticket several months to a year in advance. For more information on getting to Machu Picchu, tours and tips for visiting , check out our guide.

How to Save Money in Cusco

  • Purchase a Boleto Turístico This pass grants access to 16 attractions in Cusco, some of which only accept this ticket in lieu of an entrance fee. A Boleto Turístico costs 130 Soles (roughly $40); however, there is also the option of buying boleto parcial (partial ticket), which allows access to fewer sites for half the cost.
  • Rely on your own two feet The best way to take in this city is on foot, which so happens to be the most affordable way to get around .
  • Arrive in spring You'll find much better hotel rates between late September and November, after the popular winter months.

Culture & Customs

In A.D. 1200, Cusco (known as the "navel of the world") served as the epicenter of the Inca Empire and anchored a vast political and military network that extended to Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile. After Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro seized the city in 1533, the Spanish established a new fortress, utilizing the Incan foundations. Today, the city showcases a rich infusion of Inca and Spanish heritage.

Now home to about 350,000 people, Cusco's culture is best seen during its lively outdoor festivals like the Festival of the Sun when thousands of revelers gather to celebrate fiestas and dance to pre-Columbian music. The majority of Cusco's population identifies as Roman Catholic, however, a variety of other religions are practiced and very few residents identify as atheist or agnostic.  Catholic saint days, Andean ceremonies and Incan festivities are observed throughout the year.

Dress is generally casual in Cusco, but those planning to visit the Inca ruins should remember to bring waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking shoes and warm layers as the high altitude ushers in cooler temperatures at night. Keep in mind that Cusco's streets are cobbled, so you'll want to bring comfortable walking shoes for exploring the city by day and participating in the lively night scene after dark. Also, as you're wandering Cusco, remember to keep your wits about you. Petty thieves frequent Plaza de Armas , and pickpocketing happens to unsuspecting tourists.

The official language of Peru is Spanish, but you'll hear a mingling of Spanish, Aymara and Quechua (the official language of the Inca Empire). Cusco Quechua is its own distinct dialect, which varies greatly from Quechua spoken in other regions in Peru. English-speakers can be hard to find, so come prepared with a basic book of key Spanish phrases and plenty of patience.

The Peruvian Sol (PEN) is the official currency of Peru, which has a very favorable exchange rate to the U.S. dollar (about $0.30 per 1 Peruvian Sol). Make sure to check the current exchange rate before traveling.

What to Eat

In recent years, Peruvian cuisine has gained popularity in the world’s culinary landscape, but for the freshest (and most authentic) specialty dishes, Cusco will not disappoint. Most Peruvian dishes carry big flavor not seen in other Latin and South American fare. You may have already tried popular dishes like ceviche (a cold dish of fresh raw fish with spicy citrus flavors) or lomo saltado (stir fried beef with fries). If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, try cuy (roasted guinea pig – yes, the American household pet) or charbroiled alpaca (also known as llama). Other delicious traditional dishes include adobo (a pork stew with corn beer), tamales, choclo con queso (boiled corn with local cheese) and the vegetarian stew capchi de setas . As far as vegetables go, Peru produces more than 4,000 varieties of potato, so you’ll find many dishes centered on them like papas a la huancaina (boiled potatoes with a spicy cheese sauce) and causa (a potato casserole with a variety of meat). Other staple veggies include corn and avocados. If your mouth isn't watering yet, check your pulse.

For a taste of traditional dishes, head to Pachapapa  or the award-winning Chicha (visitors and locals recommend getting reservations well in advance).  Peruvian cuisine often mingles with Asian influences, inspired by the culture brought by indentured servants and immigrants who came to Peru dating back to the original Spanish rule in the country. For a sampling of the Asian/Peruvian fusion cuisine, visit LIMO .  If you're really looking to splurge on a fine dining experience, try MAP Cafe . Located in the courtyard of the Pre-Columbian Art Museum in a glass shipping container, the fare is more contemporary Peruvian cuisine. You can also kick-start your day with coffee and breakfast at Jack's Cafe , which serves breakfast all day. Many of the most popular restaurants are centrally located near Plaza de Armas .

Getting Around Cusco

The best way to get around Cusco is on foot. The Plaza da Armas serves as the historic center of the city and colorful cobbled pedestrian-only streets extend outward to many of the city's  top attractions .  That said, at an altitude of more than 11,000 feet, exploring Cusco requires stamina. Should you need to catch your breath, it's easy to flag down a taxi. Buses, often called colectivos or combis , are a more affordable way to get around, but the time schedules and limited routes can be less convenient than hailing a cab. For longer journeys to the Sacred Valley, you'll want to rent a car, but heavy pedestrian traffic can clog the narrow street, so driving in Cusco proper is not recommended.

When you're ready to journey to Machu Picchu , you'll want to snag a seat on one of PeruRail's daily trains from Estación Poroy (15 minutes from downtown Cusco) to Aguas Calientes, a station located at the base of Machu Picchu. A tour company can also arrange transportation for you; learn how here .

Most visitors fly into Cusco's Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) – located about 4 miles southeast of the downtown area – via the one-hour flight from Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM). Peruvian Airlines and LAN Airlines offer daily flights between Lima and Cusco.

Entry & Exit Requirements

A valid passport is required for entry into Peru. U.S. travelers can stay for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa as long as they possess documentation of return or continued travel. Staying beyond 90 days is prohibited without applying for a special visa prior to arrival. Peru requires an international departure tax of $30.74 per person, which is either included in the cost of your plane ticket or must be paid in cash upon departure from the airport. If you're flying domestically within Peru, expect to pay $10.68 in taxes. Although Peru does not require immunizations before entry, vaccination against yellow fever is highly recommended. For more information, check out the U.S. Department of State's website .

The heart of the city – both during Incan times and present day – the Plaza de Armas is constantly buzzing with activity.

The Ultimate Guide to Cusco, Peru

Cusco, Peru is famous for its Inca history and plenty of things to do.

Our comprehensive travel guide to Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, covers things to know before you go. One of the best cities in Peru, Cusco is also known as a gateway to Machu Picchu. Read tips on the best things to do in Cusco, top attractions, tours, day trips, safety, where to stay, what to pack, when to visit, how to get.

Cusco is a captivating city in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 3400 meters above sea level.

Once the capital city of the Inca Empire, Cusco still preserves its grandeur and the spirit of Incas, factors that cannot be overlooked, even if you would have tried hard.

Yes, it is touristy, and when walking in the historical center, you might have a feeling that the authenticity and Inca civilization heritage are long gone, but we recommend you to dig deeper and uncover the layer underneath.

Take your time, and we believe that once you get away from the crowds a bit, you will have a great time in Cusco.

As soon as you find a narrow stone-built alleyway, abandoned plaza or when searching for street food on the local market, you will suddenly understand the city's rhythm.

You will notice those small little things that were hidden even a moment ago, and you will appreciate how genuine the city is despite its touristy reputation.

Believe it or not, most local people still live their simple traditional lives in Cusco, which we liked the best here.

The combination of local life, indigenous people, street photo opportunities, beautiful landscape, top attractions, beautiful day trips, and the best things to do are the reason why Cusco is the top tourist destination in the country.

We spent more than two weeks in Cusco because we found there so many things to see and do not only in the city itself but also in the near surroundings, that we simply could not leave earlier.

Cusco was also our base for visiting Machu Picchu and hiking the Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek.

The beautiful nature and impressive ruins got under our skin, and it was hard to say goodbye.

To plan your time in Cusco better, we've put together this travel guide on everything every first-time traveler should know before visiting Cusco.

It includes advice on how many days to stay in Cusco, when is the best time to visit the city, where to stay, what to pack, and we also listed some of the best things you can see and do in the city.

Cusco is a perfect base for Machu Picchu, treks, day trips, and guided tours.

HOW MANY DAYS FOR CUSCO

We are not afraid to say that Cusco is a place where every traveler ends up at least once during the trip around Peru , and it is hard to tell what is the right length of stay.

If your primary reason why to visit Cusco is to get to Machu Picchu, you still should spend here at least two days to acclimatize (despite the fact Machu Picchu is at a lower elevation than Cusco, some people still suffer from altitude sickness), and during this time you can explore the city and Sacred Valley.

Because we wouldn't want to miss the Sacred Valley and ruins near Cusco by no means, we would have considered two days for the city bare minimum.

But you can spend here only a day, and then travel slowly via the Sacred Valley and sleep in smaller towns on the way - that's also an option.

From our personal experience, we think that the longer you can stay in Cusco it is better.

Some travelers with limited time even revolve their entire itinerary around Cusco - this only proves how rich the city is in terms of sightseeing, architecture, and activities.

Cusco has so many things to see and do, not only within the city limits but mostly outside, that it is not a problem to spend here weeks.

If you are flexible, sit down, and write down all one-day and multi-day treks you would like to do from Cusco (keep reading to get an idea of the best things you can do in the historic city and around), and you should get the optimal number of days for you.

If you climb the hill above Cusco, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the city and the entire valley.

HISTORY OF CUSCO

Evidence proves that today's Cusco area was inhabited by farmers and shepherds more than 3000 years ago, but we know very little about this period.

Much later, between 900 - 1200 AD, the place was occupied by Killke people (pre-Inca people) who even built the famous Cusco ruin Sacsayhuaman, but because Incas later rebuilt the site, we call it Inca ruin.

Until today the arrival of Inca people is surrounded by a great deal of myth, but we know this era begins around 1200 AD.

Inca people were generally indigenous people who never developed written language, but they were exceptional builders and farmers. And for keeping records, Incas used a unique Quipu system known as knot language.

Cusco soon became the capital of the Inca Empire and the center of religion.

For almost four centuries, the Empire thrived, but it all ended when Spaniards arrived in 1533 and easily defeated Incas who did not know modern weapons and tactics.

Those who survived the battles soon died on diseases Spaniards brought from Europe.

Spaniards also destroyed many historical buildings in Cusco and built theirs on the remnants, but during the years, several earthquakes destroyed the city, but it is impressive that although Spanish buildings were damaged, Incan structures withstood.

During our modern history, Cusco was recognized as an exceptional architectural and cultural place and was UNESCO-listed.

Cusco was a capital city of the Inca Empire.

THINGS TO DO IN CUSCO

Although it might seem that the best things to see and do in Cusco are not actually in Cusco, you still should spare at least one day to have time to explore the city's narrow streets and discover the indigenous heart which still strongly beats beneath.

Centro Historico is the area you should focus on in case you do not have that much time.

The longer you have, the more it gives you a chance to wander around and discover lesser know places.

We've handpicked the best things to do in Cusco and tips on the day trips from the city.

PLAZA DE ARMAS

The main square of Cusco known as Plaza de Armas is a place you cannot miss.

The large plaza is an architectural and cultural center of the city with a dominating green park in the middle and a bronze statue of the most well-known Incan ruler, Pachacutec.

On one side, you cannot overlook the magnificent Cusco Cathedral, a symbol of the Spanish conquest.

The rest of the square is lined with many charming buildings with arcades where you can have lunch or your morning coffee accompanied by beautiful views.

Plaza de Armas is the real center of Cusco that is dotted with restaurants (we preferred local eateries a few blocks away), coffee shops, outdoor clothes shops, and travel agencies - although at first, it might seem there's a lot to take in, do not get overwhelmed.

We're pretty sure that you'll intuitively visit the main Cusco's square several times during your stay so that you can take it all in little by little.

Another reason why visiting Plaza de Armas should be high on your to-do list in Cusco is that it is a great starting point for exploring other more or less famous top sights.

When Spaniards arrived in Peru, they wanted to defeat the Inca people in every way possible, and it also included destroying the outstanding architecture.

It did not happen only in Cusco, but also further north; one of the best examples is Chan Chan , which was once one of the most important cities in the area. But back to the point.

Coricancha was once the most notable structure in Cusco, known as Sun Temple, and its roof was made of gold. Spaniards melted the gold, and on top of the remnants, built their church of Santo Domingo.

Nowadays, we can see in Cusco this striking building with Incan foundation and Spaniard church on top of that.

Although nowadays Coricancha (also often spelled Koricancha or Qoricancha) and Santo Domingo Church are basically one building, there are two separate entrances.

The tour of Coricancha costs S/.15, while the access to Santo Domingo Church is S/.10.

Even if you are fine with admiring the site's exterior, this stop on your Cusco itinerary is definitely worth it.

There's a garden near this place, so you can just sit there and contemplate the history. We always liked to think how it would have been like hadn't Spaniards arrived.

Coricancha is a combination of Spanish colonial architecture and original Inca construction.

SAN PEDRO MARKET

We are not saying San Pedro Market is the most authentic market you will ever see, but it still keeps its charm, and we consider it as one of the budget-friendly things to do in Cusco.

When we think of our visit retrospectively, we actually must change our statement a bit. When we were in Cusco, we really enjoyed the market, but we met there quite many tourists.

But after one year of traveling around South America , we must say that San Pedro Market was really unique, as it still has its soul (and smell), despite its popularity and size of the city.

Whether you want to buy fresh meat (no refrigerators, arrive early!), fruits or vegetables, buy a sweater from llama wool as a souvenir or want to have a quick lunch, you can find all of that at San Pedro Market.

As we spent quite a lot of time in Cusco, some days just waiting for our tour departure, it became our habit to stop by at the market and buy veggies for dinner.

You also might be surprised that you can buy in Cusco perfectly ripe watermelon or tasty grapes.

From Plaza de Armas, steep cobblestone streets lead to San Blas Plaza, the center of the San Blas district known for artisan shops, coffee shops, and galleries.

It is fun walking around San Blas as you can find here many hidden gems.

To be completely honest, we are often not fans of hippie places as it usually means that backpackers took over, but San Blas was a bit different, and we immediately understood what all the fuss about is.

Some of Cusco's top coffee shops are located in San Blas, so you can start your morning here every day and look for your favorite place.

San Blas is also interesting architecturally, so grab a camera in hand and start exploring its narrow streets. Thanks to the newly discovered popularity, you can even base yourself here in a hotel and hostel.

The good news is that San Blas is easily accessible from Centro Historico.

San Blas is a popular neighborhood among tourists in Cusco.

TWELVE ANGLE STONE

You cannot miss a walk via Hatunrumiyoc street in Cusco, home to a famous 12-angle stone. If pressed for time, you do not have to worry about visiting this site as the city is full of examples of how Inca people were skilled workers with stone.

Still, given the circumstances, the location is close to the city center, it is effortless to incorporate it into your itinerary.

The street is lined with a stone wall where you can admire how rigorous the Incan builders were.

Incas could cut massive stones that they fitted together with precision and with no mortar.

These structures and walls even survived numerous strong earthquakes in contrast with many modern buildings.

CHURCHES AND CATHEDRALS OF CUSCO

Cusco has many plazas with cathedrals and small churches, so take time to discover one or two outside the historic city center.

Actually, there are tens of churches and cathedrals within walking distance, and you'll undoubtedly stumble upon several of them when returning in the evening to your hotel.

Obviously, the most famous one is Cusco Cathedral on Plaza de Armas, but other gems such as San Francisco Church or San Cristobal Church are worth a quick stop as well.

These churches and cathedrals are usually built in European architectural style on the foundations of old Inca churches, which gives the city a unique appearance.

Before you arrive in Cusco, you will have to learn a new term, Boleto Turistico. This ticket has many variants and basically includes tickets to some of the top attractions within the city and in the area.

If you're a history buff, the good news is that one partial ticket includes the top museums in Cusco (and the integral ticket, of course, includes them too).

But unfortunately, not all attractive museums are included in this ticket, so you will need to pay most of the entrance fees separately.

For example, if you decide to see the Museum of Chocolate, Museum of Textiles, or Museum of Coca, make sure you have cash in your pocket.

Visiting a museum is a great plan when the weather does not play along, but it is also a great way to learn more about Cusco's history and events that define local peoples' life until these days.

SACSAYHUAMAN

Sacsayhuaman Ruins is a UNESCO listed site close to Cusco - you can get there from the city center via a series of stone steps, it should not take longer than 45 minutes, but public transport is available as well.

Sacsayhuaman is a pre-Incan structure. Killke people built it, but Incas later rebuilt the site; therefore, it is considered one of the best examples of Inca civilization's building skills.

If you are looking for a tip for a half-day trip, there's probably not a better thing to do than walk leisurely from Cusco's historical center to Sacsayhuaman Ruins .

No matter how many ruins you've already seen in Peru, this is simply a must. Not only you'll get the chance to admire what was left, but the views from this site are out of this world.

If you have more time, it is possible to take colectivo from Cusco and explore more ruins in the near vicinity, such as Qenqo, Puca Pucara, and Tambomachay.

Sacsayhuaman Ruins is within walking distance from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco.

VIEWS OVER CUSCO

When you decide to visit Sacsayhuaman, you can walk a bit further to either Christ Statue or to another ruin, Q'enqo, from where you will get amazing views over the large city.

Cusco, from above, is very photogenic, plus according to a legend, the city was built in the shape of a puma, so feel free to look for the resemblance with this mysterious animal.

When the visibility is good, the trip to a hill from where it is possible to overlook Cusco is a must as, except for the town itself, you can spot towering mountains and hills on the opposite side.

SACRED VALLEY

Only a short ride from Cusco is one of the most famous valleys in the world, the fabled Sacred Valley .

Stretching from Pisac where you can visit splendid Pisac ruins and indigenous market to Ollantaytambo, another town famous for ruins and also a train station for Machu Picchu, Urubamba alias Sacred Valley is a must-visit region.

The picturesque valley formed by the Urubamba River has fertile soil.

That's why Inca people needed to build so many agricultural terraces in order to grow crops. They did a fine job, and many of them were preserved from the past times until today.

The valley is dotted with many smaller or bigger ruins that are often not that famous such as Pisac or Machu Picchu, but give you the chance to escape crowds.

The valley was sacred to the Incas not only because they could produce food here, but it connected the capital city Cusco with Machu Picchu, an important religious site.

You can visit the best sites on Sacred Valley Day Tour .

Or you can travel slowly by public transport and stop in small towns on the way to Ollantaytambo and explore these sites independently.

It will only take you a bit more time, though.

Sacred Valley is best visited on a guided day tour from Cusco.

BEST DAY TRIPS FROM CUSCO

Believe it or not, Cusco is not only a gateway to Machu Picchu. You can easily spend here days, weeks, or months in pursuit of looking for communities living high in the Andes the same way their ancestors had been living for centuries.

You can explore Inca ruins not less astounding than the famous lost citadel, hike in the mountains so high that you can almost touch the clouds which never stop rolling while trying to find yet another lake which would have been even bluer than the one you saw yesterday.

We spent more than two weeks in Cusco between two multi-day treks we have planned.

We did not have time to get bored because there are so many things to do around Cusco for all outdoor enthusiasts and architecture slash culture lovers that it is sometimes heartbreaking to choose which things to do and which to miss.

All day trips from Cusco have one advantage.

Because of many travelers concentrating in the area, all of them are easily accessible by public transport, and you won't have a problem finding a tour operator who will take you to the attraction you fancy.

We've written a full post about the best day trips from Cusco , so here we will only outline a few places which are worth your time and space on your itinerary.

HUMANTAY LAKE

Take a winding road from Cusco, and in three hours, you will reach a trailhead to Humantay Lake, one of the most beautifully colored glacial lakes we've ever seen.

Even though the Humantay Lake Hike is not the hardest hike in Peru, the altitude makes it quite challenging.

RAINBOW MOUNTAIN

Not sure if we have to introduce this spot, as it seems that everyone heading to Cusco also has hopes to see Rainbow Mountain. But you know what, after we saw Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley , we can only tell you, go for it.

Despite the crowds, it's one of the most out of this world places we've ever seen.

Our favorite day trip from Cusco was the Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley.

PISAC RUINS

Less than an hour from Cusco, you will find a small town, Pisac, well-known for two things. Traditional market and picturesque ruins perched atop a hill overlooking Urubamba Valley.

We hiked to Pisac Ruins from the the town sitting at the bottom of the Urubamba Valley independently and enjoyed it tremendously.

The famous Sacred Valley is a must-visit when in Peru. The landscape is so wonderful, plus you must visit other fascinating ruins, Ollantaytambo is one of them.

MORAY & MARAS

Have you thought of how were Inca people able to grow crops even from other parts of Peru when conditions were not welcoming?

You will find the answer in Moray, which is a unique agriculture laboratory. Only a short ride away is Salinas de Maras, famous for its salt ponds.

Hundreds of visitors visit them each day and you’ve probably seen the pictures on Instagram .

MACHU PICCHU

Yes, you don't need to stay overnight in Aguas Calientes to visit Machu Picchu. When you are on a strict schedule, you can see the Lost Citadel in one day and base yourself in Cusco.

You can visit Machu Picchu in one day on a guided tour from Cusco.

BEST DAY TOURS FROM CUSCO

If you want to visit more sites in the Sacred Valley in only one day, you can reserve this Sacred Valley Tour .

Humantay Lake is quite far from Cusco with non-existent public transport, so the most popular way to reach the trailhead is with a tour operator.

This Humantay Lake Tour is popular and well-rated.

Rainbow Mountain is almost exclusively visited with organized tours unless you want to hire private transport.

Consider booking this Rainbow Mountain Tour .

Machu Picchu is easily doable on a day trip from Cusco. We beleive that the train ride is part of the experience, so we beleive this Machu Picchu Tour is a solid choice.

A more intimate experince delivers this Machu Picchu Small Group Tour .

TOP TREKS IN CUSCO

Cusco is not only base for popular day trips, but it is also a base from where trekkers set off for multi-day adventures in the Peruvian Andes.

In Cusco, you will find hundreds of travel agencies running multi-day treks, from the most famous ones to more specialized ones. It only depends on your adventurous soul and fitness level for how long you want to disappear in the Peruvian Andes.

Almost every traveler arriving in Cusco has two treks in mind - Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek .

The Inca trail is one of the most famous multi-day treks in the world because it goes via insanely beautiful landscape and several ruins to Machu Picchu, but it needs to be reserved at least a couple of months in advance.

That's why your real chance is to hike Salkantay Trek if you want to book a trek last-minute.

Unlike many hikers, we've done both treks, and you can read our comparison Inca Trail vs. Salkantay Trek here.

Only a small hint, Salkantay is by no means worse than the Inca Trail; it is only different. You can compare them and decide which hike to Machu Picchu is right for you.

Make sure to read our Inca Trail Packing List as hiking with guides and porters requires a bit different approach.

If you want to do something slightly different and hike off the beaten path, you can try Ausangate Trek, Choquequirau Trek, or Lares Trek, which has been increasingly popular in the past few years.

These treks are awesome alternatives to Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail.

Guides working for travel companies in Cusco are usually locals who know all the trails well; they are experienced, so you can even ask them to prepare a completely unique multi-day route for you; it only depends on how much money and time you have.

Salkantay Trek is a budget alternative to the more prestigious Inca Trail.

MULTI-DAY TOURS FROM CUSCO

If you want to hike Lares Trek, which takes you through traditional Andean communities, you can do it on your own, although it is not recommended to inexperienced travelers.

The trail is not well-marked, and it's better to take a guided 4D/3N Lares Trek Tour .

Ausangate is one of the most extended and most challenging treks you can do from Cusco.

To make a reservation, shop around Cusco if you want to get the cheapest rate or book this well-rated 9D/8N Ausangate Trek in advance.

Salkantay Trek is doable both independently or with a guided tour. You can shop around and try to find the best deal last-minute or reserve 5D/4N Salkantay Trek here.

Inca Trail has the most restrictions out of all hikes in Peru, so it is impossible to hike it independently.

If you want to hike one of the best treks in the world, you can look for guided tours here.

You can book a classic 4D/3N Inca Trail or a shorter 2-Day Inca Trail Tour version.

If Cusco is your first destination in Peru, or if you are arriving in Cusco from the lowlands or even you spent a week or so by the sea, it can easily happen you will feel dizzy for a day or two before you get used to the altitude .

Cusco sits at 3400 meters above sea level, and although some people feel completely fine here (the lucky minority), many travelers often struggle and suffer from headaches, dizziness or breathlessness for a day or two before their bodies adjust to a thinner air.

Generally, all day trips from Cusco are high in the mountains, so it pays off to acclimatize in the city properly before you set off for your next adventures.

Fortunately, Cusco has so many things and activities to do that you won't have a feeling you are only killing time. Although acclimatization might seem unnecessary for some of you, we advise you not to underestimate it.

We met a couple of hikers who got quite sick, were even hospitalized, and one girl from our hiking group even could not start the Inca Trail.

Although you can never know how the altitude will affect you (it has nothing to do with physical ability or how your body reacted to altitude previously), there are several simple rules you should follow to maximize your chances to enjoy your time here.

Stay in Cusco at least a day or two before the hike or take a day trip to adjust your body to a higher elevation.

Drink enough water, do not eat heavy meals, don’t drink alcohol, and try to do some light physical activity.

As you can see, sightseeing in Cusco is not only pleasant for your soul of traveler but also beneficial to your health.

Cusco lies at 3400 meters above sea level and you should acclimate slowly.

Travel Insurance

We never leave home without travel insurance that was designed to cover our expenses if something goes wrong during the trip.

Travel insurance protects against theft, flight delays, injury, illness, cancellations, and much more.

World Nomads provides travel insurance for travelers to cover their trip essentials, including sports and adventure activities.

SafetyWing is affordable travel insurance for backpackers, long-term travelers, and digital nomads.

Travel smarter and safer!

BOLETO TURISTICO - CUSCO TOURIST TICKET

When planning on visiting ruins or museums in Cusco or outside the city limits, you will soon come across the term Boleto Turistico .

Simply put, this is a ticket you will most likely need to purchase in case you want to see at least some of the best sights Cusco and the Sacred Valley have to offer.

Because it is no longer possible to buy a single ticket for each attraction (we are now talking about the picked best attractions), you need to know how much time you have for exploring Cusco and its surroundings and what you want to see.

Based on this information and your plans, you will find out if it pays off to purchase the full ticket for S/.130, which includes all 16 sights, and you can visit them in 10 consecutive days.

Or you can purchase a partial ticket for S/.70 which is valid for either one or two days, depending on which circuit you will choose.

At the moment, there are three circuits, and each contains several sites you cannot mix together.

The full ticket is quite expensive, especially for budget travelers, but we think it is worth buying it.

Frankly, how many times will you have a chance to visit Peru?

CUSCO IS A GATEWAY TO MACHU PICCHU

Although Cusco is not that close to Machu Picchu as you might think, it is the official gateway to the most famous destination on the continent.

You can be sure that every single traveler you meet in Cusco already visited or will visit Machu Picchu .

Although we recommend you to buy Machu Picchu tickets in advance, especially when traveling to Peru in the high season between May and October, you can buy your tickets here in Cusco in the Dirección Regional de Cultura Cusco office as well.

Everything connected with Machu Picchu starts in Cusco.

Both Salkantay Trek or the Inca Trail begins here in Cusco (not the trails but the tours).

When traveling on a budget you must get from Cusco to Hydroelectrica by bus and then carry on to Aguas Calientes on foot.

Even the famous Machu Picchu train sets off on the journey to foggy mountains either from Cusco (Poroy station is twenty minutes from the city) or from Ollantaytambo, where you need to get again, from Cusco.

Cusco is a gateway to Machu Picchu also known as Lost City of the Incas..

WHEN TO VISIT CUSCO

Generally, when to visit Cusco depends on whether you want to have a higher chance to enjoy sunny days with clear blue skies, or if you don't mind experiencing shower from time to time and enjoy Cusco and all other sights nearby without crowds.

The Cusco region experiences two distinct seasons.

The dry season runs from May to October. During this time, it rarely rains, especially between June and August.

The weather is usually sunny, day temperatures are pleasant, but because this period is Peruvian winter, you can expect chilly mornings and evenings, and temperatures at night drop even to 0°C.

Because the weather is so promising and it falls on European and the USA holidays, you cannot be surprised that you will have to share Cusco with many other travelers, also expect higher prices.

You should reserve all the services well-in-advance.

May might be the best pick out of the winter months because nature is still lush green after rains, and there are not that many tourists yet.

The wet season (when we stayed in Cusco) from November to April is, as the name suggests, predominantly wet, but it is not that bad how it sounds.

When it rains, it usually happens in the afternoon, temperatures are a bit higher during the day than in the dry season, and nights are much warmer as well.

Not that many people travel to Peru during this period (except for long-term travelers), so you can take advantage of emptier streets, lower prices, and you might even get that moody picture of Machu Picchu towering out of the clouds.

It rains a lot in January and February, so we would recommend not having a strict schedule and adjusting your Peru travel itinerary to the situation as landslides can occur (the Inca Trail is even closed for maintenance in February).

Generally, we would not avoid visiting Cusco or Peru overall at any time of the year; we would be only more cautious in January and February.

It is better to visit Cusco during the dry season.

HOW TO GET TO CUSCO

Cusco is the top destination in Peru, so you cannot be surprised that the city is easily accessible no matter where you travel from - you can get to Cusco either by bus or by plane.

Budget travelers, including us, usually get around Peru by overnight buses. Distances between cities are vast, so it is a great way to save time and accommodation money.

We found buses in Peru comfortable and safe, and they arrived almost every time on time.

In Cusco, you will find the main bus terminal, Terminal Terrestre, a bit out of town, and it was one of the few occasions we had to use a taxi to get from the station to the city center in South America.

The price for gringos is S/.10, but it was S/.7 when the hostel owner called us a taxi, and the driver did not know it is not for a local but travelers.

Tourists usually travel by bus from either Puno close to the borders with Bolivia , Arequipa , or Nazca .

Cusco has the airport receiving both domestic and international flights (only from Bolivia and Chile), so you will need to fly to Lima, and from Lima, take a short, direct flight to Cusco.

Traveling to Cusco by air is the best option for everyone visiting Peru only for a short time because flights are not expensive.

It will save you lots of time, and you will avoid a certain level of discomfort.

Getting from the airport to the city center is relatively cheap compared to rates in Europe.

You can take a taxi at the airport or reserve Cusco airport transport in advance.

HOW TO GET AROUND

We found the city center of Cusco very compact and easily covered on foot. Here we must admit that we don't bother to call a cab when our destination is within 20-30 minutes walk.

When we needed to get from our hostel to a colectivo station, for example, to Pisac or anywhere else, we walked.

Otherwise, there are plenty of taxis in Cusco. They are literally everywhere and you won’t have a problem to hail a cab on the street.

Friendly advice, always settle on the price before you go.

Getting around Cusco on foot is quite comfortable.

WHAT TO PACK

When in Cusco, you must be ready for hot days, chilly nights, and some rain, especially when visiting the city during the rainy season.

We've created a full post on What to Pack for South America , but here are a few absolute essentials you need to pack when traveling to Cusco.

Walking Cusco's cobblestone streets require only comfy sneakers, but we would recommend you wearing proper waterproof hiking boots with quality soles for any trip outside Cusco.

In the rainy season, you can experience short but powerful showers.

Having a good rain jacket is a must, and we have nothing but words of praise for these dry sacks that helps keep our valuables dry.

When the sun shines or even when it is cloudy, do not forget to apply strong sunscreen .

Tap water is not drinkable in Peru.

To reduce your plastic waste , we recommend carrying around a reusable water bottle (some hotels offer free refills).

Or consider investing in SteriPen that purifies the water or water bottle with integrated filter .

For walking around the city or hiking in the mountains, make sure you have a daypack where you can fit water, snack, sunscreen, and extra clothing layers.

It is chilly at night, especially during the high season from May to October, so pack a reliable fleece jacket that will keep you warm.

Last but not least, you really want to keep your camera handy as Cusco is an incredibly photogenic place.

We enjoy using a compact mirrorless camera for street photos, as people are more relaxed when taking pictures of them.

WHERE TO STAY IN CUSCO

As you could read in this travel guide, there are so many things to see and do in Cusco and its surroundings that the city certainly deserves more than one day of your time.

To enjoy your days in Cusco the most, it is essential to choose the right accommodation.

The good news is that Cusco has a great network of hotels for every type of traveler, from cheap hostels to luxurious mansions.

That's why your only job is to find a hotel in a location that suits you the best.

WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK IN CUSCO

It is no secret that we were not big fans of South American cuisine, at least in our budget category. But here are a couple of things you should taste when in Cusco.

Every restaurant in the city will try to sell you cuy alias guinea pig. Our guide on the Inca Trail disclosed to us; locals never go to a restaurant to eat cuy without calling there, at least one day in advance, and making a reservation.

They also do not forget to mention they want to have a fresh guinea pig. Do it the same way; otherwise, you will get a defrosted meat which will be hard to chew.

Our lifesaver in Cusco was our favorite restaurant serving Pollo a la Brasa alias rotisserie chicken with fries, rice, and salad. Yes, it is not traditional Peruvian cuisine, but it at least had some taste.

We usually don't eat sweets, but we made an exception here in Peru, where we tried delicious churros for only S/.1.

If you don't know what to drink in Cusco, you can always try coca tea, which will also help you deal with altitude sickness, or the all-time favorite alcohol drink Pisco Sour.

SAFETY IN CUSCO

Cusco is a touristy city, and most of the locals live from tourism, so crime against tourists is frowned upon, which does not mean it cannot happen from time to time.

That's being said, we spent plenty of time in Cusco and felt very safe here, much safer than in other destinations in Peru.

However, you should follow the same common safety rules you usually do.

Try to minimize to minimum walking alone at night (the city did not feel sketchy unlike Lima), keep an eye on your valuables, or better leave it in your hotel room, do not show off your expensive camera, and travel by radio taxi.

While a long voyage to Machu Picchu, it was worth the trek to get there. I took the Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu, which was a great experience. They provided the tour guide and helped with all travel to get up to Machu Picchu and then back down.

Jeff R

This was a last minute upgrade for my trip to Machu Picchu…so glad I paid the extra money to experience this. The team is so kind and helpful. It’s was a great trip with a lot of information shared and great food and drink included. The tour guide for Machu Picchu did a great job as well. Highly recommend.

We had a wonderful day on a well organized tour with Romerio as our guide. We had constant communication, excellent commendations, and a delicious meal. Breakfast was arranged at a scenic restaurant the hike and photo Opportunities were picturesque.

koszeg

We booked this tour but due to issues at rainbow mountain and it being shut, we were given options on what we wanted to do instead! We ended up going to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountains instead and it was amazing!! Not so much of a tricky hike, beautiful views and our tour guide Mario

TPD30

I really enjoyed the hike, it was a good mix of adventure activities and hiking. Accommodation was surprisingly comfortable and hot showers if you were lucky. The best part was the guide Daniel who entertained us from start to finish with humor and information

MitchMitch52

This trip was amazing! It’s challenging but very do-able. We had people in our group ranging from 23-58 years old and I saw other people who looked older from other groups, it is for everyone. Our chef cooked seriously amazing food every morning, afternoon, and evening. I would compare the food to any upscale restaurant, and it was varied. The stops were plentiful, there were snacks offered for along the way. The porters (the men who carried our belongings, tents, and offered services) were incredible.

docCraig

We did the 5 day 4 night itinerary, one day longer than the classic 4 day trek. We just wanted to spread the hike out a bit longer so the Trek days weren’t as tough. Our guide JC Zuloaga was amazing !!!! He gave us just the right bit of information about everything… Pointing out local plants.. fauna… Incan history…

Roy R

I booked the 2 day tour and happened to have Raúl and Gary- who were absolutely wonderful. I had the best experience with Gary as our tour guide- very informative with the history of the Inka history and Peru. From the start of the pick up at our hotel to the very end of our drop off Gary was friendly and very enthusiastic showing us many new things about this beautiful country.

Gary G

Everything was amazing from start to finish. The guide (‘Grillo’) provided an awesome experience, our group were the best and we did activities I’ll remember for a lifetime.

grantw644

Definitely one of the best and must-do experiences! We had Vicente as our guide, and his team were very personable, knowledgeable, and professional. He cared about the safety and comfort of the group, and the trip became more like a bunch of friends going on a trek together. The support staff carrying the gear throughout the trek were impressively fast and multi-talented, transporting the gear, beating us to the next stop, cooking, cleaning, setting up tents, breaking down equipment.

Getting around Cusco up to Sacsayhuaman

To  getting around Cusco  up to  Sacsayhuaman  without the amazing experience of walking up there before it has actually been acclimated to the altitude, you can take the  Cusco tours  bus wooden Tranvia Cusco, which takes a scenic drive through the historic center to Sacsayhuaman and returns almost every day.

Mountain disease Soroche, or mountain sickness, is a reality for most people who takin most Cusco tours who normally live in low lands by sea level and must be treated with respect.

It is vital to take things slowly, not eat or drink much when you arrive, even sleep a whole day just to help acclimatize (coca tea is a good local remedy).

After three days at this height, most people have adjusted enough to cope with moderate increases at similar or lower altitudes.

Anyone who is considering attacking the main mountains around Cusco will need time to adapt again to their higher base before starting any Cusco tours, even if they are in the sacred valley.

Urban transport The center of Cusco is small enough to walk. Taxis can be dropped on any street, particularly at the Plaza de Armas, Avenida Sol and around the Plaza San Francisco market;  Tours in Cusco  to Sacsayhuaman and Quenko.

The city’s bus network is incredibly difficult to understand, although it’s cheap and fast enough, but it’s also largely unregulated, with minibuses storing their destinations on the front windshields. More useful are the groups that run along Avenida Sol.

Tourist Ticket Cusco (Tourist Ticket – Cusco) The Cusco tourist ticket is a vital purchase for most visitors. It is the only way to access most of the major Cusco tours in the city and region, and has useful maps and other information, including opening hours.

It does not give entrance to the Cathedral, the Church of San Blas or the Museum of Religious Art, each of which has a separate entrance fee. The ticket is, in theory, available on all ticket sites, but in practice it is better to buy at the tourist information office on Mantas Street.

The city Despite the apparently complex structure of the street, it does not take long to face Cusco. The city is divided into five distinct main areas around various plazas, temples and churches, with the Plaza de Armas at the heart of it all.

The area south of the Plaza to Koricancha begins along the broad Avenida Sol that goes downhill and southeast from the corner of the plaza by the university and the Compañía Church to the Inca temple in Koricancha, the station of Huanchac train and to the airport in the south.

Running uphill and to the southwest from the top of Avenida Sol, the area that encompasses Plaza San Francisco and Mercado Central follows Calle Mantas past the Plaza and the Church of Santa Clara, and then continues to the Mercado Central and the San Pedro train station.

Just one block west of the central plaza, you will find the neighboring Plaza Regocijo, smaller and more leafy, which has Inca origins and is home to some of the best mansions in the city, as well as the modest municipal palace.

From the northeast corner of the Plaza de Armas, Triunfo Street leads uphill through a classic Inca alley of stone walls before passing through cobbled streets to the artisan neighborhood of San Blas.

Included on most Cusco tours is possible to visit the small but elegant Plaza Nazarenas, northeast of downtown. Going northwest on Plateros Street, uphill from the Plaza de Armas, you will pass some really charming streets that lead to the fortress of Sacsayhua

If you’re like us, there’s a yearning inside of you to travel. You’re tired of life in the hamster wheel and you want to reclaim a little freedom.

A chance to slip into a hammock undisturbed at sunset with an ice cold drink and a slow sway to the tunes of your favourite trip.
