Prayer for Travel

O Lord Jesus Christ our God, the true and living Way, Who didst will to journey with Thy guardian Joseph, and Thy most pure Virgin Mother into Egypt, and didst accompany Luke and Cleopas on their way to Emmaus: we now humbly entreat Thee, O most holy Master: do Thou accompany now this Thy servant(s) N. by Thy grace. Send unto him as to Thy servant Tobias, an angel as a guide and guardian, protecting and delivering him from every evil assault of enemies both visible and invisible; directing him to the fulfillment of Thy commandments, sending him on his way peacefully, profitably, and soundly and bringing him back again safely and in peace. Grant that he may fulfill all his good purpose unto Thy good pleasure, and favorably unto Thy glory. For Thine it is to be merciful and to save us, O Christ our God, and to Thee do we send up glory, together with Thy Father Who is without beginning, and Thy most holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Morning and Evening Prayers

The following translation has been made at the request of several readers. It appears to be the first liturgical translation made by a native English speaker which also remains faithful to the Church Slavonic.

Morning Prayers

Having risen from sleep, before all else stand reverently as if before God Who seeth all things. Having made the sign of the cross, say:

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Then wait a little, until your feelings are calm and your thoughts have left all earthly things, and then make three bows, saying:

The Prayer of the Publican

God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

Prayers of Introduction

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of Thy Most-Pure Mother and of all the Saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to Thee, O our God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King, O Comforter, O Spirit of Truth, Who art in all places and fillest all things, Treasure of Blessings and giver of life, come and abide in us, cleanse us from all impurity and save our souls, O Good One.

(Between Easter and Ascension Day the above prayer, ‘O Heavenly King’ is replaced by, ‘Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death and upon those in the graves bestowing life’ . Moreover, between Ascension and Pentecost the Prayers of Introduction begin from ‘Holy God’).

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Three times)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; O Lord, cleanse our sins; O Master, forgive our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Thy name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (Three times)

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Hymns to the Trinity

Arising from sleep, we fall down before Thee, O Good One, and sing to Thee the angelic hymn, O Mighty One: holy, holy, holy art Thou, O God, by the Mother of God, have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

O Lord, Thou hast aroused me from bed and from sleep, enlighten my mind and my heart, and open my lips, that I may sing of Thee, O Holy Trinity: holy, holy, holy art Thou, O God, by the Mother of God, have mercy on us.

Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Suddenly the judge will come, and the deeds of all will be revealed, but with fear we cry out at midnight: holy, holy, holy art Thou, O God, by the Mother of God, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy. (Twelve times)

Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity

Arising from sleep, I thank Thee, O Holy Trinity, that for the sake of Thy great goodness and longsuffering, Thou hast not been angered against me, slothful and sinful, neither hast Thou destroyed me with my iniquities, but Thou hast shown Thy customary love for mankind, and hast raised me up as I lay in heedlessness, that I might sing my morning hymn and glorify Thy might. Do Thou now enlighten the eyes of my thought, open my lips to learn Thy words and make me to understand Thy commandments, and to do Thy will, to sing of Thee in the confession of my heart, and to hymn Thine All-holy Name, of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O come, let us worship God our King. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and fall down before Christ himself, our King and God.

Here may be read the daily Epistle and Gospel.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgression, and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in Thy sight; that Thou mightest be justified in Thy sayings, and overcome when Thou art judged. For behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins did my mother bear me. For behold, Thou hast loved truth; the hidden and secret things of Thy wisdom hast Thou revealed to me. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me to hear joy and gladness; the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice. Turn away Thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and establish me with Thy governing Spirit. I will teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shall turn again to Thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in Thy righteousness. O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Thy praise. For hadst Thou desired sacrifice, I would have given it; Thou wilt not delight in whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Thy good pleasure unto Sion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be builded. Then shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, oblation and whole burnt offerings. Then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.

I believe in one God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, Who was begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, True God of True God, begotten, not Made, of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. Who was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And on the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures. And He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, Whose Kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets. And in One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead. And the life of the age to come. Amen.

Prayers of St Macarius the Great

O God, cleanse me a sinner, for I have done nothing good before Thee. Deliver me from the evil one and may Thy will be in me: may I open my unworthy lips uncondemned and praise Thy Holy name, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Rising from sleep I offer to Thee, O Saviour, a midnight hymn and falling down I cry unto Thee: give me not over to slumber in sinful death, but show mercy to me, O Thou who of Thine own will wast crucified, hasten to arouse me as I lie in sloth and save me by prayer and intercession: after the sleep of night make the day to shine forth on me without sin, O Christ God, and save me. Amen.

To Thee, O Master that lovest mankind, I hasten on rising from sleep, by Thy mercy I go forth to do Thy works. I pray Thee: help me at all times and in all things and deliver me from every evil thing of this world and suggestion of the devil, and save me and lead me into Thy eternal Kingdom. For thou art my Creator and the Provider and Giver of every good, in Thee is all my hope and to Thee I send up glory, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

O Lord, Who of Thy plentiful goodness and Thy great bounties hast granted that I Thy servant should pass through the time past of this night without assault from any evil of the Enemy: Do Thou, O Master, Maker of all things, vouchsafe me to do Thy will in Thy true light and with enlightened heart, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer of St Basil the Great

O Lord Almighty, God of hosts and of all flesh, that dwellest in the highest and carest for the humble, that searchest the inner parts and the heart and clearly discernest the hidden things of men, Ever-existing Light from Eternity, with Whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning: Do Thou, O King Immortal, accept our prayers which we, hoping in the multitude of Thy mercies, offer to Thee at this present time from our soiled lips, pardon us our transgressions which we have committed, knowingly or unknowingly, in word and thought and deed: and cleanse us from every stain of flesh and spirit. Grant us to pass through all the night of this present life with watchful heart and sober thought, awaiting the coming of the bright and manifest day of Thine Only-Begotten Son, our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ, in which the Judge of all men shall come with glory, when to each shall be given the reward of his deeds: may we not fall away into sloth, but take heart and, roused to action, may we be found ready and enter together into the joy and Divine bridal chamber of His glory, where the voice of those that feast is never silent and the sweetness of those that behold the inexpressible beauty of Thy countenance is beyond all words, for Thou art the true Light that enlighteneth and halloweth all things, and Thee doth every creature hymn unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to your Guardian Angel

O holy angel, standing by my wretched soul and passionate life, forsake me not, a sinner, nor depart from me for my lack of restraint: grant not a place to the evil demon to take possession of me by the force of this mortal body: strengthen my weak and feeble hand, and set me on the path of salvation. Yea, holy Angel of God, guardian and protector of my wretched soul and body, forgive me everything wherein I have offended thee all the days of my life, and if I have sinned this past night; protect me during the present day, and preserve me from every temptation of the Enemy: may I not anger God by any sin: pray for me to the Lord, that He may establish me in His fear, and show me a servant worthy of his goodness. Amen.

Prayer to the Most Holy Mother of God

O my Most Holy Sovereign Lady Mother of God, by Thy holy and all-powerful prayers drive away from me, thy humble and wretched servant, despondency, forgetfulness, lack of understanding, carelessness and all unclean, evil and blasphemous thoughts from my wretched heart and my darkened mind: quench the flame of my passions, for I am poor and wretched, and deliver me from the many cruel recollections and undertakings, and free me from all evil deeds: for Thou art blessed by all generations and Thy most honourable name is glorified unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to your Patron-Saint

Pray to God for me, holy N, who art pleasing to God, for I eagerly betake myself to thee, who art the speedy helper and intercessor for my soul.

Hymn of the Most Holy Mother of God

Rejoice, O Mother of God and Maiden, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with Thee, blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, for Thou hast given birth to the Saviour of our souls.

Troparion of the Holy Cross and Prayer for your native land

O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance, granting victories to Orthodox Christians over their enemies, and by Thy Cross preserve Thy commonwealth.

For the Living

Remember, O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, Thy mercies and bounties which are from everlasting, for the sake of which Thou didst become man and deign to endure crucifixion and death for the salvation of all who rightly believe in Thee: Thou rose from the dead, ascended into heaven and sittest on the right hand of God the Father, and regardest the humble prayers of all who call upon Thee with their whole heart: incline Thine ear and hearken to the humble entreaty of me, Thine unprofitable servant, who offer it as a sweet-smelling spiritual fragrance for all Thy people. And first of all remember Thy Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, which Thou hast purchased with Thy precious blood; confirm it and strengthen it, enlarge it and multiply it, keep it in peace and preserve it unconquerable by the gates of hell for ever: calm the divisions of the churches, quench the ragings of the heathen, and speedily destroy and root out the risings of heresies, and bring them to naught by the power of Thy Holy Spirit. Bow.

O Lord, save and have mercy on our land, its rulers and all those in seats of authority, and the Orthodox Christians that dwell herein. Bow.

O Lord, save and have mercy on the most holy Orthodox Patriarchs, the most Reverend Metropolitans, Orthodox Archbishops and Bishops, and all the priestly and monastic order and all the clergy of the Church, which Thou hast established to feed the flock of Thy Word, and by their prayers have mercy on me and save me, a sinner. Bow.

O Lord, save and have mercy on my spiritual father, N, and by his holy prayers forgive me my transgressions. Bow.

O Lord, save and have mercy on my parents, N. and N, my brothers and sisters, my kinsmen after the flesh, and all those near to me and my friends, and grant them Thy good things, both here and hereafter. Bow.

O Lord, save and have mercy on the old and the young, the poor, the orphans and the widows, and all that are in sickness and sorrow, in distress and affliction, in oppression and captivity, in prison and confinement, more especially have mercy on Thy servants that are persecuted for Thy sake and for the sake of the Orthodox Faith, by heathen nations, by apostates and heretics: remember them, visit, strengthen, and comfort them, and make haste to grant them by Thy power relief, freedom and deliverance. Bow.

O Lord, save and have mercy on all who are sent on duty, all who travel, our fathers and brothers and sisters, and on all Orthodox Christians. Bow.

O Lord, save and have mercy on those that hate and affront me and do me mischief, and let them not perish through me, a sinner. Bow.

Those that have departed from the Orthodox Faith, dazzled by destroying heresies, do Thou enlighten by the light of Thy understanding and unite them to Thy Holy, Apostolic, Catholic Church.

Commemoration of the Departed

O Lord, remember those that have departed this life, Orthodox kings and queens, faithful princes and princesses, most holy Patriarchs, most reverend Metropolitans, Orthodox Archbishops and Bishops, and all who served Thee in the priesthood and clergy of the Church, and in the monastic order, and grant them rest with Thy saints in Thine eternal habitations. Bow.

O Lord, remember the souls of Thy servants who have fallen asleep, my parents, N. and N., and all my kinsmen after the flesh: and forgive them all their transgressions voluntary and involuntary, granting them the Kingdom and the partaking of Thy eternal good things and the delight of Thine unending and blessed life. Bow.

O Lord, remember all who have fallen asleep in hope of the resurrection and eternal life, our fathers and brethren, and sisters, Orthodox Christians, who rest here and in all the world; and set them with Thy saints, where shineth the light of Thy countenance, and have mercy on us, for Thou art good and Thou lovest mankind. Amen. Bow.

O Lord, grant to all that have gone before us in faith and hope of the resurrection, our fathers and brethren and sisters, pardon of sins, and grant them eternal memory. (Three times)

Conclusion of the Prayers

It is truly meet to bless Thee, Who didst bring forth God, ever blessed and most pure and the Mother of our God. More honourable than the cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim, Who without defilement didst bear the God the Word, Thee, very Mother of God, we magnify.

O Lord, give the blessing. And the Dismissal

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of Thy Most Pure Mother, of Saint N, (the name of the Patron Saint), of Saints NN (the saints of the day) and of all Thy Saints, of our holy and God-bearing fathers and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, for Thou art a merciful God and Thou lovest mankind. Amen.

Evening Prayers

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of Thy Most-Pure Mother, of our holy and God-bearing fathers and of all the Saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

(Between Easter and Ascension Day the above prayer, ‘O Heavenly King’ , is replaced by, ‘Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death and upon those in the graves bestowing life’ . Moreover, between Ascension and Pentecost the Prayers of Introduction begin from ‘Holy God’).

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we sinners, lacking all defence, offer unto Thee, as to our Master, this prayer: have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

O Lord, have mercy on us, for in Thee have we hoped: be not very wrath with us, neither call to remembrance our iniquities: but even now look down on us in Thy goodness, and deliver us from our enemies: for Thou art our God, and we are Thy people, all the works of Thy hands, and we call on Thy Name.

Now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Open unto us the door of mercy, O blessed Mother of God, that we who set our hope on Thee may not perish, but may be delivered by Thee from all misfortunes: for Thou art the salvation of all Christian people.

Prayer of St. Macarius the Great

O Eternal God and King of all creation, Who hast vouchsafed me even to attain to this hour, forgive me the sins which I have committed this day, in deed, word and thought, and, O Lord, cleanse my humble soul from every stain of flesh and spirit. Grant me, O Lord, to pass through the sleep of this night in peace, that when I have risen from my lowly bed, I may please Thy most holy Name all the days of my life, and vanquish the enemies, both bodily and bodiless, that contend against me. And deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that stain me and from evil desires. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer of St Antiochus

O Almighty, Word of the Father, Jesus Christ Who art Thyself perfect, for Thy great mercy’s sake never depart from me, Thy servant, but ever rest in me. O Jesus, Good Shepherd of Thy sheep, let me not fall into the disobedience of the serpent, nor leave me to the will of satan: for the seed of corruption is in me. Do Thou, therefore, O Lord God Whom we worship, O Holy King Jesus Christ, keep me while I sleep by Thy unfading light, Thy Holy Spirit, with Which Thou didst hallow Thy disciples. O Lord, grant even to me, Thy unworthy servant, Thy salvation on my bed: enlighten my mind with the light of the understanding of Thy holy Gospel, my soul with the love of Thy Cross, my heart with the purity of Thy Word, my body with Thy passionless passion, keep my thought in Thy humility, and rouse me in due time to glorify Thee. For Thou art most glorified, together with Thine Eternal Father and the Most Holy Spirit unto the ages. Amen.

O Lord our God, what sins I have this day committed, in word, deed and thought, forgive me, for Thou art good and Thou lovest mankind. Grant me peaceful and undisturbed sleep: send me Thy guardian Angel to protect and keep me from every evil; for Thou art the guardian of our souls and bodies, and to Thee we send up glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayers for Children

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who didst receive the children who came unto Thee, receive also from the lips of me, Thy child, this evening prayer. Shelter me under the shadow of Thy wings, that in peace I may lie down and sleep, and awaken me in due time, that I may glorify Thee, for Thou alone art righteous and merciful. Amen.

Guardian Angel, keep and preserve all of us from every evil, sickness, and grief. Help us, O Lord, to be good, obedient and kind. I thank Thee, O Lord, for all good things Thou has sent to me during the past day. Let me spend this night in peace and protect me from all harm. Amen.

O Gracious Mother of our gracious King, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul and by Thy prayers set me to good deeds, that I may pass the remaining time of my life without fault, and through Thee find paradise, O Mother of God and Virgin alone pure and blessed. Amen.

Prayer to your Holy Guardian Angel

O Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me every transgression which I have committed this day: and deliver me from all evil of my enemy and adversary, that I may not anger my God in any sin: but pray for me, His sinful and unworthy servant, that thou mayest show me worthy of the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and of the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and of all the saints. Amen.

To Thee, O Mother of God, chosen leader of triumphant hosts, we, Thy servants, delivered from evil, sing our thanks: but since Thou hast invincible might, free us from every calamity, that we may call to Thee: Rejoice, O Bride Unwedded.

Most Glorious Ever-Virgin Mother of Christ our God, bring our prayer unto Thy Son and our God, that by Thee He may save our souls.

All my hope I put in Thee, O Divine Mother, keep me beneath Thy protection.

O Virgin Mother of God, despise not me, a sinner, who seek Thy help and Thy intercession: for in Thee hath my soul hoped, and have mercy on me.

Prayer of St. Ioannicus

The Father is my hope, the Son is my refuge, the Holy Spirit is my protection, O Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

And the dismissal:

Prayer of St. John of Damascus, which you say as you approach your bed:

O Master that lovest all men, will not this couch be my grave? Or wilt Thou again enlighten my wretched soul with the day; Behold, the grave lieth before me, behold, death standeth before me. Thy judgement, O Lord, I fear, and the unending torments, yet I cease not from doing evil. O Lord my God, I always anger Thee and Thy Most Pure Mother and all the heavenly Powers and my holy guardian Angel. For I know, O Lord, that I am not worthy of Thy love for mankind, but am worthy of every condemnation and torment. But, O Lord, whether I wish it or not, save me. For if Thou savest the just, it is nothing great, and if Thou hast mercy upon the pure, it is nothing marvellous: for they are worthy of Thy mercy. But on me, a sinner, show the wonder of Thy mercy: in this show Thy love for mankind, and let not my evil overcome Thine inexpressible goodness and mercy: and as Thou wishest, order all things about me.

And when you wish to lie down, say this:

Enlighten mine eyes, O Christ my God, that I may never sleep in death, lest mine enemy say: I have prevailed against him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: . Be Thou the defender of my soul, O God, for I walk in the midst of many snares; deliver me from them, and save me, O Blessed One, for Thou lovest mankind.

With heart and lips let us continually hymn the Most Glorious Divine Mother, Who is more holy than the Holy Angels, confessing that She is the Mother of God, for in truth She bare for us God Incarnate, and She prayeth unceasingly for our souls.

Then kiss the cross and, making the sign of the cross over your bed and also the four corners of the room, say:

Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, let them also that hate Him flee from before His face: like as the smoke vanisheth, so shall they vanish, like as wax melteth before the face of fire, so let the demons perish before the face of those that love God and sign themselves with the sign of the Cross and say in gladness: Rejoice, O most honourable and life-giving Cross of the Lord, driving away the demons by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ Who was crucified on thee, who descended into hell, and trampled down the power of the devil, and granted us His honourable Cross, to repulse every foe. O most honourable and life-giving Cross of the Lord, help me, together with the holy Virgin Lady, the Mother of God, and with all the saints unto the ages. Amen.

O Lord, fence me around with the power of Thy honourable and life-giving Cross and keep me from every evil.

O God, absolve, remit and forgive our transgressions, voluntary and involuntary, whether in word or deed, whether knowingly or unknowingly, whether by day or night, whether in mind or in thought: forgive us everything, for Thou art Good and Thou lovest mankind.

O Lord, Lover of mankind, forgive those who hate and offend us. Do good to those who do good. Grant the petitions of our brethren and kin which are for salvation and eternal life: visit those who are sick and grant them healing. Guide those at sea. Travel with those who travel. Help Orthodox Christians in their struggles. To those who help us and are merciful to us, grant forgiveness of sins. On those who charge us in our unworthiness to pray for them, have mercy according to Thy great mercy. O Lord, remember our fathers and brethren who have fallen asleep before us, and grant them rest where the light of Thy countenance visiteth them. O Lord, remember those who bring forth fruit and do good works in Thy holy churches, and grant to them their petitions that are for salvation and eternal life. O Lord, remember also us Thy humble, and sinful and unworthy servants, and enlighten our minds with the light of Thy understanding, and set us on the path of Thy commandments: through the prayers of our Most Pure Mother, the Sovereign Lady, the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, and of all Thy saints, for Thou art blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen.

As you give yourself up to sleep, say:

Into Thy hands, O Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit. Do thou bless me, have mercy on me and grant me eternal life. Amen.

Saint Anthony the Great Orthodox Church

Amen.

Orthodox River

The holy fathers on prayer.

Scripture, Divine Tradition and the Holy Fathers have given us great volumes of works devoted to prayer. Whether we are in Church, at home, at work, traveling, or at leisure, prayer constitutes our most intimate union with God. It is inconceivable even to imagine oneself as being an Orthodox Christian with out prayer; in fact, the more one “lives and breathes” Orthodoxy, the more one’s soul and body strive toward prayer, and the more one strives to develop perpetual, heartfelt communion with God every moment of one’s life. To walk with God’s presence felt continually in one’s heart is to walk with un ceasing prayer. Christ Himself is our ex ample Who not only prayed corporally (Matt. 14:23; 26:36; Luke 6:12; John 17), but perpetually “beheld” within, God the Father (John 10:38).

There are many Christian virtues which we should follow, e.g., giving alms, showing mercy, being gentle, not arguing, etc., but these often require and depend upon circum stance-prayer, however, we can always practice; there is no circumstance which can prevent us in our conscious existence from conversing with God. Prayer should be our first, middle and final endeavor as Orthodox. From the moment of waking, to the time of sleeping, we should strive not to let prayer leave our hearts. Even while we sleep, God in His mercy is able to grant us prayer during such hours of “unconsciousness”-for, although we sleep, the heart is awake (Song 5:2). If we have prayer in our hearts continuously, then we stand always before God and all other. Christian virtues are then easy to fulfill. As St. Tikhon of Zadonsk wrote:

As a bird without wings, as a soldier without arms, so is a Christian without prayer.

We are like birds ever striving to fly to God and dwell in His unutterably joyful Kingdom. and we are like soldiers perpetually battling those dark, evil forces which tempt us and often cause us to fall; with the wings of prayer we can soar to God and with the arms of prayer we can scatter the temptations of the dark ones, gaining for ourselves peace, crowns, and the Kingdom of Heaven.

The following are but a few of the teachings that we have been given about prayer and the reading of Divinely inspired books as ex pounded by Scriptures and the Holy Fathers- in particular, the emphasis is on personal prayer. We should strive to read and re read these words, implant them in our hearts, and put them into practice.

What is Prayer and Why It Is Needed

God is spirit; and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)

What then, is prayer? Prayer is the raising of the mind and heart to God in praise and thanksgiving to Him and in supplication for the good things that we need, both spiritual and physical. Prayers are spiritual because they are originally born in the (human) spirit and ripen there by the Grace of the Holy Spirit. In their origin they (i.e. prayers, psalms, hymns, etc.) were purely spiritual and only afterwards came to be clothed in words and so assumed an oral form (Bp. Theophan the Recluse)

When you praise the Lord, exalt Him as much as you can; for He will surpass even that.

Every man when praying converses with God. Each of us understands how great a thing it is, being man, to converse with God; but I doubt if anyone can express this honor in words, for it is higher even than the station of angels. A man who strives all his life to practice praying and serving God, speedily becomes akin to angels in life, honor, estate, wisdom and understanding.

If you deprive yourself of prayer, it is like taking a fish out of water; for as water means life to a fish, so prayer means life to the soul. .. Prayer is the cause of salvation, the source of immortality, the indestructible wall of the Church, the unassailable fortress, which terrifies the demons and protects us in the work of righteousness.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. (II Tim. 3:16)

When you read the Gospels, Christ speaks to you; when you pray, you are speaking to Him…. The Bible should be read not just for analysis, but as an immediate dialogue with the living Word Himself-to feed our love for Christ, to kindle our hearts with prayer and to provide us with guidance in our personal life. (St. Tikhon of Zodonsk)

When one reads the Holy Scriptures, one should apply everything to oneself and not to someone else. As a Book uniquely inspired by God and addressed to each of the faithful personally, the Bible possesses sacramental power, transmitting Grace to the reader, bringing him to a point of meeting and decisive encounter with God. (St. Mark the Monk)

Keep on studying the Gospels until the end of your life. Never stop. Do not think you know it enough, even if you know it all by heart. (Bp. Ignatius Brianchaninov)

How to Pray and Types of Prayer

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door; pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. (Matt. 6:6)

The room of the soul is the body; its doors are the five bodily senses. The soul enters its room when the mind does not wander here and there, roaming among the things and affairs of the world, but stays within, in our hearts. Our senses become closed and re main closed when we do not let them be passionately attached to external sensory things and in this way our mind remains free from every worldly attachment, and by secret mental prayer unites with God our Father. (St.Gregory Palomas)

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. (Eph. 5:19)

What is meant by those who sing with their “heart to the Lord?” It means: undertake this work with attention, for those who are in attentive sing in vain, pronouncing only words, while their heart wanders elsewhere. (St. John Chrysostom)

When you pray, try to let the prayer reach your heart; in other words, it is necessary that your heart should feel what you are talking about in your prayer, that it should wish for the blessing for which you are asking…. Observe, during prayer, whether your heart is in accord with that which you are saying. (St. John of Kronstadt)

Our prayer reflects our attitude towards God. He who is careless of salvation has a different attitude toward God from him who has abandoned sin and is zealous for virtue but has not yet entered within himself and works for the Lord only outwardly. Finally, he who has entered within and carries the Lord within himself, standing before Him, has yet another attitude. The first man is negligent in prayer, just as he is negligent in life, and he prays in church and at home merely according to the established custom, without attention or feeling. The second man reads many prayers and goes often to church, trying at the same time to keep his attention from wandering and to experience feelings in accordance with the prayers which are read, al though he is seldom successful. The third man, wholly concentrated within, stands with his mind before God, and prays to Him in his heart without distraction, without long verbal prayers, even when standing for a long time at prayer in his home or in church…. Every prayer must come from the heart and any other prayer is no prayer at all. Prayer-book prayers, your own prayers and very short prayers, all must issue forth from the heart to God, seen before you. (Bp. Theophun the Recluse)

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. (Matt. 21:22)

Remember that while you pray, God expects from you a positive answer to His question: “Do you believe that I can fulfill your prayer?” You must be able to answer from the bottom of your heart: “Yes, I believe, O God,” and then you will be answered according to your faith. (St. John of Kponstodt)

How many times have I prayed for what seemed a good thing for me and not leaving it to God to do as He knows best But having obtained what I begged for, I found myself in distress because I had not asked for it to be, rather, according to God’s will. (St. Nilus of Sinai)

I had rather speak five words with my understanding… than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. (I Cor. 14:19)

Pray Simply. Do not expect to find in your heart any remarkable gift of prayer Consider yourself unworthy of it-then you will find peace. Use the empty, cold dryness of your prayer as food for your humility. Repeat constantly: “I am not worthy, Lord, I am not worthy!” But say it calmly, without agitation. This humble prayer will be acceptable to God. (Elder Macarius of Optina)

You should not make long prayer, for it is better to pray little but often. Superfluous words are idle talk. (St. Theophylact)

Strive to render your mind deaf and dumb during prayer. Blessed is the mind which during prayer keeps itself wholly without image or fantasy. (St. Nilus of Sinai)

Do not rush one prayer after another but say them with orderly deliberation, as one addressing a great person for a favor. Do not just pay attention to the words, but rather let the mind be in the heart, standing before the Lord in full awareness of His presence, in full consciousness of His greatness and grace and justice. (Theophun the Recluse)

The Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. (Matt. 11:12)

In order to pray a man must struggle to has last breath. If we do not find prayer difficult, perhaps it is because we have not really started to pray. (Abba Agathon)

I advise you to convince yourself a n d force yourself to prayer and every good action, even if you do not feel the desire for it. God seeing such labor and application will give you goodwill and zeal. Such good will and a certain attraction to prayer is often a result of habit. Get into this habit and it will draw you to prayer and good actions. (St. Tikhon of Zadonsk)

If you strive after prayer, prepare yourself for diabolical suggestions and bear patiently their onslaughts; for they will attack you like wild beasts…. Try as much as possible to be humble and courageous. He who endures will be granted great joy. (St. Nilus of Sinai)

Do not spare yourself from heartfelt prayer even when you have spent the whole day in hard work. Do not indulge in laziness when you pray; tell God everything that is in your heart. If you allow yourself time to pray with diligence, you will not fall asleep before you have wept over your sins. Believe that, if for the sake of bodily rest you pray hurriedly, you will lose the tranquility of both body and soul. By what labor, sweat and tears is our closeness to God achieved! (St. John of Kronstadt)

Pray without ceasing. (I Thess. 5:17)

Make sure that you do not limit your prayer merely to a particular part of the day. Turn to prayer at anytime. (St. John Chrysostom)

In everything they (the Apostles) did, they thought of God and lived in constant devotion to Him. This spiritual state was their unceasing prayer. (St. Basil the Great)

Rising in the morning stand as firmly as possible before God in your heart, as you offer your morning prayers and then go to the work apportioned to you by God, without withdrawing from Him in your feelings and consciousness….When there is no inner activity occupying a person, one must develop a habit of a continual repetition of a short prayer. This will eventually repeat itself and will bring one to constant remembrance of God, thus rejecting other thoughts of no profit. However, habit of the tongue is one thing, establishment in the heart is another. (Bp. Theophan the Recluse)

Those who have truly decided to serve the Lord God should practice the remembrance of God and uninterrupted prayer to Jesus Christ, mentally saying: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” (St. Seraphim of Sarov)

Let not one think, my fellow Christian, that only priests and monks need to pray with out ceasing and not laymen No, no; every Christian without exception ought to dwell always in prayer. (St. Gregory Palamas).

“Tefilat haDerekh l’Tayas,” a prayer for sorties by military aviators in the service of the IDF by Rabbi Shlomo Goren was first published in his Siddur Tefilot l’Ḥayyal (p. 74 in the 1963 printing). The earliest edition of the siddur that we have seen is from 1963 but there may be an earlier publication of this prayer. (If you know, please leave a comment or contact us .)

The Jesus Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me, a sinner. The Creed I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not created, of one essence with the Father, through whom all things were made. For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and He suffered and was buried. On the third day He rose according to the Scripture. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic, apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I expect the resurrection of the dead. And the life of the age to come. Amen.
Prayer before the Icon of the Theotokos Forasmuch as thou art a well-spring of tenderness, 0 Theotokos, make us worthy of compassion; Look upon a sinful people; Man-ifest thy power as ever, for hoping on thee we cry aloud unto thee: Hail I as once did Gabriel, Chief Captain of the Bodiless Powers. Hymn to the Theotokos (From the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom) It is truly meet to bless thee, 0 Theotokos, who art ever blessed and all-blameless, and the mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, thou who without stain barest God the Word, and art truly Theoto-kos: we magnify thee.
Morning Prayers

Amen.
  • To Thee, O Master Who lovest mankind, I hasten on rising from sleep; by Thy mercy I go forth to do Thy works, and I pray unto Thee: help me at all times, and in all things; deliver me from every evil thing of this world and from the pursuit of the devil; save me and lead me into Thine eternal Kingdom. We entreat Thine infinite goodness, enlighten the eyes of our understanding and raise up our minds from the heavy sleep of indolence; open our mouths and fill them with Thy praise, that we may unceasingly sing and confess Thee, Who art God glorified in all and by all, the eternal Father, the Only- Begotten Son, and the All-Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Grant us, O god, a watchful mind, chaste thoughts, a sober heart, and a gentle sleep, free from all the fantasies of Satan. And raise us up again at the hour of prayer, established in Thy commandments and holding steadfast within ourselves the remembrance of Thy judgments. Give us the words of Thy glorification all night long, that we may praise, bless, and glorify Thy most honorable and magnificent name, O Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
  • O eternal God! Ruler of all creation! Who hast vouchsafed that I should live even down to the present hour, forgive the sins I have committed this day by deed, word or thought. Cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul of all corporal and spiritual stain. And grant, O Lord, that I may during this night have a peaceful sleep, so that on rising from my humble bed, I should continue to praise Thy holy Name though out all the days of my life, and that I be victorious over all the physical and spiritual enemies battling against me. Deliver me, O Lord, from all vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil desires. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
  • O Lord our God, however I have sinned this day in word, deed or thought, forgive me, for Thou art gracious and lovest mankind. Grant me peaceful and undisturbed sleep. Send me Thy guardian angel to shield me and protect me from every evil; for Thou art the Guardian of our souls and bodies, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
  • Into Thy hands, O Lord, Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit. Bless me, save me and grant unto me everlasting life. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (12 times) A Prayer to the Holy Trinity Arising from sleep I thank thee, 0 holy Trinity, because of the abundance of thy good-ness and long-suffering thou wast not wroth with me, slothful and sinful as I am; neither hast thou destroyed me in my transgressions: but in thy compassion raised me up, as I lay in despair; that at dawn I might sing the glories of thy Majesty. Do thou now enlighten the eyes of my understanding, open my mouth to receive thy words, teach me thy command-ments, help me to do thy will, confessing Thee from my heart, singing and praising thine All-holy Name: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. A Prayer of St. Basil the Great We bless thee, O God most high and Lord of mercies, who ever workest great and mysterious deeds for us, glorious, wonderful, and numberless; who providest us with sleep as a rest from our infirmities and as a repose for our bodies tired by labor. Amen. Here may be added your own private de-votions and intercessions, using your own words or the “Occasional Prayers” printed in this book. Published by Rob Welte on Apr 25th 2023

This is a high quality item. I own the regular edition prayer book and purchase d the travel for outside the home. High quality cover, paper, print and binding. This is a book made with reverence in mind. It has two ribbons for book marks which I also value. The illustrations are also amazing and inspiring. The only fault I have is that the print is quite small. It truly is a mini version of the regular prayer book. Therefore if you have difficulty reading small print I would recommend the standard version over this.

Commentary: A prayer for finding balance in the Holy Land

Cease-fire now; release the hostages now.

(Samar Abu Elouf | The New York Times) Displaced Palestinians flee the war between Israel and Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip, walking to its southern section in November 2023.

God bless and protect the people of Israel; God bless and protect the people of Palestine.

God damn antisemitism; God damn Islamophobia.

Israelis are children of God; Palestinians are children of God.

Jews are children of Abraham; Muslims are children of Abraham.

Israelis have a right to a homeland and a state; Palestinians have a right to a homeland and a state.

Israeli civilians should not be targeted; Palestinian civilians should not be targeted.

Israeli children are precious; Palestinian children are precious.

Hamas should not hide in hospitals; Israel should not attack hospitals.

Israelis have a right to live in peace and freedom; Palestinians have a right to live in peace and freedom.

Hamas soldiers who attack Israeli civilians are terrorists; Israeli settlers who attack Palestinian civilians are terrorists.

Palestine cannot be “from the river to the sea”; Israel cannot be “from the river to the sea.”

Israelis need better leadership; Palestinians need better leadership.

Guns and bullets do not foster peace; food and water do not foster war.

Let the aid in; keep the weapons out.

Iran must stop arming Hamas and Hezbollah; the U.S. must stop arming Israel.

No more bombs; lots more bread.

War brings famine; peace brings prosperity.

Israel and Palestine must live together, or they will die together.

Tens of thousands participate in global shema prayer on behalf of israeli hostages.

Jews attend a prayer for the return of the hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, at the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem, March 21, 2024. Chaim Goldberg/Flash90

(JTA) Tens of thousands of Jews around the world joined in a collective recitation of the Shema prayer on Thursday, March 21 that was broadcast from Jerusalem’s Western Wall to support the more than 130 hostages still held by Hamas.

The event was organized by the Hostage and Missing Families Forum along with Aish HaTorah, a haredi Orthodox yeshiva and outreach movement. They timed it to the Fast of Esther, which commemorates the threat the Jews of Persia faced from their persecutor, Haman, during the Purim story.

The call for participation took off in Jewish communities around the world, with synagogues of all denominations encouraging their members to join in and Jewish day schools pausing their lessons to have their students say the Shema. Jewish influencers on social media also exhorted their followers to participate.

The YouTube livestream from the Western Wall registered over 150,000 viewers, but there were signs that far more people were participating: The Google search engine registered a massive spike in queries for the Shema at 11 a.m., just before the planned prayer time.

At the Western Wall, speakers wearing tags marked “167” for the number of days the hostages have been captive likened the plight of the hostages to the Jews of Persia in the Purim tale.

“Many Jewish girls were kidnapped in that ancient Persian kingdom,” said Rabbi Eitiel Goldwicht, perched on a plateau overlooking the Western Wall plaza, where hundreds were gathered in the lead-up to the prayer. “And Queen Esther was taken to the royal palace and she was kept hostage for five years, and then antisemitism rose across the entire world.”

Ahead of the prayers, soldiers on leave from the front and the families of hostages appeared, including the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who was abducted on Oct. 7 from the Nova music festival.

Rachel Goldberg spoke about why Hersh has become a symbol of the plight of the hostages.

“He’s very familiar to a lot people, he looks a lot like everybody, it could be anyone’s son,” said Rachel Goldberg. “There’s a familiarity to him that makes it feel like it could be anyone’s son, anyone’s brother, anyone’s grandson, anyone’s friend.

Shmuel Rabinovitch, the rabbi of the Western Wall, led prayers for then hostages and for the solider fighting the war launched by Hamas on Oct. 7, when its terrorists raided Israel, murdering more than 1,200 people and abducting more than 250. Of those hostages, more than 130 remain captive.

He culminated with the Shema, the signature prayer affirming the Jewish belief in one God.

Personal and Devotional Prayers

Before Breakfast

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Our Father, who are in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen. Christ our God, bless the food and drink of your servants, for you are holy always, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Thanksgiving After Breakfast

We thank you, Christ our God, for you have satisfied us with earthly gifts. Do not deprive us of your heavenly kingdom, but as you, O Savior, came among your disciples and gave them peace, come among us also and save us.

Christ our God, bless the food and drink of your servants, for you are holy always, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Thanksgiving After Dinner

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, you have gladdened our hearts in your creation, and we have rejoiced in the work of your hands. The light of your countenance has shined upon us, Lord. You have gladdened our hearts. We have been satisfied with the good things of the earth. We shall sleep in peace and repose in you, for you alone, Lord, have sustained us in hope.

In addition to his feature work, which includes The Mauritanian with Tahar Rahim and Jodie Foster, and State of Play starring Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe, Macdonald has helmed several acclaimed documentaries, including the Oscar-winning One Day in September (2000), 2004’s Touching The Void and 2013’s Marley .

Matti’s crime thriller On the Job 2: The Missing 8 premiered in Venice in 2021, where it won the best actor honor for star John Arcilla. His other credits include 2019’s BuyBust and Honor Thy Father (2016).

Albert’s Nordrand screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 1999. Her 2003 feature Free Radical premiered in Locarno and her period drama Mademoiselle Paradis screened at the Toronto Film Festival in 2017.

Beta’s Content Division, led by CCO Koby Gal Raday, will work closely with the teams behind the two projects to bring the pitches to the pilot script and packaging stage.

Albert’s Sleeping Swans , a dark mystery drama about a mysterious illness striking the children of a small Eastern German town, picked up a €20,000 ($21,700) bursary as the winner of the Kirch Foundation Award, presented in collaboration with the University of Television and Film in Munich.

An Israeli project, That Hole , won the development award presented by Series Mania’s Forum industry section. The show pitch, from creators Orit Fouks Rotem, Adi Goral, Batya Deil and Miri Milstein, is a dramedy about a bridal counselor who transforms an Orthodox “prayer hotline,” aimed at strengthening women’s faith, into a channel for sexual awakening for her devout community.
