IMPORTANT INFORMATION WHALE SHARK TOUR 1.-No whale shark tour can guarantee 100% to see the sharks, it all depends on the weather conditions that exist in the area both swell and rain that may occur on the day of the activity. 2.-As tour operators we do our best to find them by carrying enough fuel for the search and dedicating all the time necessary to find them. 3.-Every season is different, there are years when there are more whales than others. 4.- The chances of finding the whales are much higher than not finding them. 5.- The historical statistics of our tours show that we have found whales in more than 98% of the trips we have taken. There are no refunds in case of not finding the whales. 6.- Each trip is different, there are days when there are more whales and there are days when there are less whales. 7.- The whales are in continuous movement, our captains mark the positions in gps in their searches, there are days that it takes more distance to find them and there are days that they are closer. In recent years the whales have concentrated in the area east of Isla Contoy. The tours that leave from Cancun area take a little less time to reach the area than the tours that leave from Holbox, however it may vary according to how the whales are moving. 9.- When there is a bad weather like a tropical storm in the area it can affect the search in the days after the storm. 10.- In case the harbor master closes the port due to bad conditions and it is not possible to go out for the activity, the activity may be rescheduled to the next possible day, in case the client can not reschedule the date, the deposit paid will be refunded.

Destination

Welcome to the adventure of searching, viewing and swimming with the mighty Whale Shark, the biggest fish on earth.

The Whale Shark is considered the world's largest fish, some even grow over 15 meters long and weigh up to 13 tons; the food of this giant from the ocean is only plankton, that is filtered in its mouth.although the whale shark, ih its size is amazing is totally inoffensive and its nature permits that people swim beside those peaceful giants in the months of june, july and august of every year.

Holbox Adventure is pleased to introduce to you The Whale Shark Tour 2022 season. We have a limited space to only 16 people per day, we rather work with smalls groups of people only.

We´re a highly specialized team that take pride in our work and since small groups are extremely manageable we can deliver our product to your full satisfaction

Our philosophy is to offer you a pleasant experience while you are staying at Holbox Island. We do not sell tours in large quantities as large companies, by booking with us you can be sure to be attended by the person you hired, as opposed to companies with large operations where you meet only sellers and they send you to tour operators who charge a commission (in such cases, the man selling earns more than the owners of the boats taking you on the tour).

Here the deal is direct so no there’s no loss in commissions.

The large operating companies guarantee that you´ll see the whale sharks because they do not invest anything since they have nothing to invest in.

With Holbox Adventure you’re dealing with the guy that will be with you during the whole activity, if you had any question or claim about our service you will have the opportunity to do so during the tour, as the person who sold the tour will travel with you throughout the tour.

In large operating companies you will never get to know the person who sold you the tour since they are only sellers that sometimes come up as the owner of the company.

If you still have any doubt, you can even ask them this : will you go and do the tour with us in the same boat?

And their answer will obviously be: I will send one of my best captains with you when most of the time they don’t even know the person that will be the captain that day of the tour.

Our guarantee of excellent quality service is that all money goes to the owner of the vessel and, thus, the quality of the service is better.

If you are looking for an excellent experience while you swim with the whale sharks you better book with us I guarantee you'll not regret it! If you are at Holbox Island or you are coming to Holbox willing to swim with whale sharks, Holbox Adventure will be best your best option.

How To Make The Most Out of your Experience with Whale Shark in Holbox

Here are some tips you should follow to make the most out of this once- in- a- lifetime experience:

  • Choose a renowned tour: When it comes to whale shark tours, it’s important to find one that follows responsible and sustainable practices when it comes to swimming with whale sharks. You’d want to find a tour operator that prioritizes your safety and the well-being of the wildlife. ‍
  • Follow safety instructions: There are several rules set to avoid accidents during these boat tours in order to have the best possible experience. Swimmers should keep a distance of, at least, 10 feet from whale sharks to not disturb them. It’s also recommended to get slowly into the water to not scare them off. Last but not least, always wear your life jacket and snorkeling equipment properly.  ‍
  • Be prepared: Swimming with whale sharks is a physically demanding activity, since you’ll be spending some time under the sun before you get to swim with these majestic creatures. You should bring biodegradable sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a water bottle. You should also take some biodegradable repellent with you to prevent mosquito bites.  ‍
  • Be mindful when taking photos: It’s natural to want to take photos of this wonderful experience, and there’s no issue with that as long as you do it responsibly. Avoid using flash photography, since it can startle the whale sharks and harm their eyes. ‍
  • Enjoy the island : Holbox is a wonderful destination that should be on everyone's bucket list. There’s plenty to do in this island, from enjoying its iconic beaches, Punta Mosquito and Punta Cocos, to enjoying the local cuisine, which includes fresh ceviche and traditional Mexican dishes.

Whale Shark, The World’s Largest Fish

whale tour holbox

The whale shark is an endangered species that is considered the world’s largest fish because they can grow to over 40 feet long and weigh up to 11 tons. They are true gentle giants of the ocean, their preferred food is plankton and they are completely harmless to humans. Whale sharks can be found in tropical oceans around the world and they are easily recognizable by snorkelers due to the white spots on their skin.

Whale sharks aren’t just the biggest fish in the world, but their distribution in the oceans is a great indicator of the presence of plankton and how healthy the ecosystem in those waters is.

Less than 10% of whale sharks survive to adulthood, but they have the capacity to live up to 150 years. They tend to migrate thousands of miles at different times of the year to find different feeding grounds, but at a slow swimming speed of 3 miles per hour.

Holbox Whale Shark Tour

Isla Holbox has been known for several years for the hundreds of whale sharks that regularly pass through from early June to mid-September to filter the plankton that is particularly abundant during this time. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and can grow up to 13 meters (43 feet) long in the Caribbean, weigh 12 tons and live up to 100 years . Despite their size, they are harmless to humans and other creatures because they feed exclusively on plankton, algae and small crustaceans.

Whale shark tours on Holbox Island

If you are on Holbox at the right time of year, you should definitely take the opportunity to go on a whale shark tour . There are few experiences more overwhelming than meeting these huge, majestic fish in the ocean and swimming with them. This trip is guaranteed to be one you will remember for the rest of your life! By the way, the tours are strictly limited as the local conservation authorities are keen to minimize disturbance to the whale sharks in their natural habitat.

For whale shark watching, licensed guides take motorboats with a maximum of 10 people for 1-2 hours to specific spots on the open sea, mostly in the waters between Isla Holbox and Isla Mujeres. Once spotted, the boat will carefully approach a single or small group of whale sharks and you may swim with them for a while. Only two people and a guide are allowed in the water at any one time.

Whale sharks usually come to the surface in the morning and disappear in the afternoon. They follow the plankton as it rises to the surface towards the sun at noon and then sinks back to deeper water.

The following video from Maapalloilija shows how this tour works and what to expect:

Prices for a whale shark tour in Holbox start at 3,300 MXN (196 USD / 261 CAD / 153 GBP) per person for a group trip. Excursions are usually combined with snorkeling in Cabo Catoche, fishing, and bird and flamingo watching. The program is flexible, depending on how quickly whale sharks can be spotted and weather conditions. In any case, a tour lasts from early morning until late afternoon.

Prices vary depending on the size, comfort and speed of the boat, the number of people on board, the service and the quality of the guides. This is not the time to save money, this is a once in a lifetime experience .

Bioluminescence Tour at Night

Bioluminescence is the glowing of certain microorganisms swimming in the sea, triggered by a chemical reaction inside them when touched. Although the light emitted is weak and can only be seen at night, it is still a fantastic experience to swim in the glowing sea. The phenomenon of bioluminescence is particularly strong on Holbox Island between July and January , but tours take place at any time. The best conditions for observing the glowing plankton are around the new moon . Full moon nights are less suitable as it is too bright.

Bioluminescence Tour on Holbox island

Depending on the operator, the tour takes 1.5 to 2 hours, including transportation and guide. To get to the best spots for bioluminescence in Holbox , you paddle a kayak or paddleboard for about 30 minutes at night to a sandbank where there are no disturbing lights from roads or hotels. In addition to the bioluminescence, on clear nights you can also see the beautiful starry sky in the dark. If you don’t want to paddle a kayak, you can alternatively book a bioluminescence tour by golf cart.

Tip : Be sure to wear a good insect repellent.

Exact times depend on sunset and moonrise and will be advised at the time of booking. The night kayak tour costs from 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP), while the much shorter golf cart tour is available from 400 MXN (24 USD / 32 CAD / 19 GBP).

Fishing and Angling Tour

Holbox Island has always been known for its abundance of fish and this has hardly changed with the advent of soft tourism. There are small-scale fishing and fly-fishing excursions, as well as deep-sea fishing boat trips.

The simplest option is to travel in small groups on a fishing boat to specific spots in the surrounding waters and try your luck at fishing with a reel and hook . You don’t have to wait long for the first fish to nibble at the bait before pulling on the line with a powerful tug at just the right moment.

Fishing Tour Holbox Island

However, it sounds easier than it is. While you watch the captain pulling fish after fish out of the water, you won’t always be as good as he is due to lack of practice. Nevertheless, in the end you will catch enough fish to make a delicious ceviche . The excursion lasts 4 hours and can be booked at a group rate starting at about 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP).

A day trip of 7 to 8 hours is recommended for advanced or amateur fishermen . The fishing boat will take you out to the open sea to good fishing grounds where you can catch dorado, barracuda, trevally, fanfish, tarpon, wahoo and other large fish with professional equipment. Prices start at around 12,000 MXN (710 USD / 950 CAD / 560 GBP) for a boat with up to 6 people.

The 3 Island Tour Holbox

Excursion to isla pasión, isla pájaros and cenote yalahau.

This route is often called the “ Three Island Tour ” and is the classic Holbox tour offered by most operators. The inexpensive boat tour takes about 3.5 hours and is a great excursion for in-between in almost all weather conditions. The route takes you to the islands of Isla Pasión and Isla Pájaros as well as to the Cenote Yalahau on the mainland. The order is not always the same and depends on the tour operator. Due to the large crowds, the boat captains try to split up as much as possible so that not all the tourists are in one place at the same time.

Boat with tourists at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

The first stop of the Holbox 3 Island Tour is usually Isla de la Pasión , also known as Passion Island , a small, uninhabited and naturally protected island surrounded by sand with knee-deep water, original vegetation and fauna. It measures only 100 meters in diameter and is located in sight of the southwestern end of Holbox, where it is clearly visible from Punta Cocos and Punta Ciricote.

Isla Pasión has only a very small jetty , so the tour boats often drop tourists off at the other end of the island and pick them up again at the jetty after a short walk along the beach. There is a lookout tower from which you have a great view over to Isla Holbox. There used to be a turtle hatchery here, but it has since been abandoned. The stop at Passion Island lasts about 20 minutes, after which the tour continues to the next stop.

Isla Pasion at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

Isla Pájaros , also known as Bird Island , is an equally small and unspoiled island located a little further east and south of Holbox. In addition to pelicans , cormorants and flamingos , up to 35 different species of birds can be observed living and nesting here. There are two rickety but sturdy observation towers on the 500-meter island, connected by a wooden walkway. From there you have a good view of the wild hustle and bustle of the bird population. The island itself is not accessible, so the stay is quite short.

Isla Pajaros at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

At the end of the Holbox 3 Island Tour, the boat will take you to Cenote Yalahau , located on the mainland near Chiquilá. At this natural site there is a clear, cool freshwater pool called Hoyo Negro (Black Hole) where you can swim. There is also a snack bar on the grounds of Yalahau. Here you can buy snacks and refreshments. The entrance fee to Yalahau is 100 MXN (6 USD / 8 CAD / 5 GBP) and is charged separately for the mandatory life jackets and restroom facilities.

The water in the cenote is really cold because it is constantly coming up from underground. Especially at noon it is a welcome cool down and you can even see small colorful fish while snorkeling in the crystal clear water . However, it can get a bit crowded during the peak times of the day. Next to the cenote there is an observation tower from where you can see the surrounding jungle.

Cenote Yalahau at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

A special highlight of Yalahau is the presence of two Holbox crocodiles that settled here some time ago. At the border between the fresh water coming out of the cenote and the sea, many fish congregate, providing the crocodiles with a convenient and abundant source of food. When they are on the prowl, they can be seen hunting just a few meters from the tour boats . Apparently they have gotten used to the constant presence of tourists.

A crocodile in the mangrove in Yalahau on the 3 Island Tour Holbox

The 3 Island Tour Holbox can be booked twice a day , in the morning at 10:00 and in the afternoon at 14:00. It is recommended for an excursion in between, lasts 3.5 hours and costs from 750 MXN (44 USD / 56 CAD / 35 GBP) , depending on the operator and the service offered.

Mangrove Tour by Kayak

A very nice afternoon excursion into the winding mangrove landscape can be undertaken by kayak. An experienced nature guide takes you to the mouth of the Rio Kuka , where the tour through the lagoon begins. From the water, you have an ideal view of the mangrove vegetation and can observe many bird species and sometimes even crocodiles in peace and quiet.

Mangrove Kayak Tour on Holbox Island

Halfway through the 3-hour kayak tour, there is a stop for refreshments and snacks before returning to the mouth of the lagoon as the sun begins to set. For early risers, guided sunrise kayak tours are also available. Prices start at 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP).

Tip : In addition to swimwear and sunscreen, don’t forget to bring a good insect repellent.

Bird Watching Tours

Holbox and the surrounding area on the Yucatán Peninsula is a birdwatcher’s paradise and is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve. More than 350 species of birds live here in the lagoons, by the sea, on sandbars and in the jungle, where they can be observed in their natural habitat. The most famous birds are flamingos, pelicans, frigate birds, herons and gulls , but many endemic species nest here that are difficult to see elsewhere.

Birdwatchers who want to take advantage of this unique opportunity can book several bird watching tours. These are organized by Holbox Birding Tours and cover a variety of areas. The tours, which can be booked individually, take participants to nesting sites on Holbox Island or to Chiquilá, as well as to the lagoons and cenotes of the nearby towns of Solferino, San Angel and Kantunilkín.

Tours are led by certified naturalist guides and cost 100-120 USD (135-160 CAD / 79-93 GBP) depending on the route.

Cabo Catoche Tour

Sailing east along the north coast of Holbox Island for about 35km (19 nautical miles), you will reach the cape of the island of the same name, Cabo Catoche. This partially inhabited place offers pristine beaches and a coral reef , as well as ruins with an interesting history. In 1517, the first Europeans landed here on an expedition from Cuba when they were washed ashore during a storm. Legend has it that the first contact with the indigenous Maya led to language difficulties, resulting in the name Yucatán.

The coral reef at Cabo Catoche, which is only two meters deep, is excellent for snorkeling . You can see sea turtles, octopus, lobsters and sometimes even harmless nurse sharks in the colorful underwater landscape. Afterwards you can take a walk on the beach or relax in the shade while a delicious ceviche is prepared. The boat trip takes about 6 hours and costs from 1.500 MXN (90 USD / 120 CAD / 70 GBP).

Tour Operators : Grupo Cadu , Holbox Adventure

Boat Trip to Isla Contoy

A little further away is the National Park of Isla Contoy . The uninhabited island is located 30 km (19 miles) north of Isla Mujeres and can be reached by boat from Holbox in 2 hours. It is 8 km (5 miles) long, 500 m (0.3 miles) wide, is home to numerous species of birds and sea turtles , and offers amazing coral reefs . The island has a beautiful beach, a jetty for boats and a museum with a lookout tower that offers a fantastic view. Visits to Contoy Island are limited to a maximum of 200 people per day in order to protect the pristine nature.

The tour lasts 8 hours and includes lunch and drinks. As an individual, the excursion costs from USD 200 (267 CAD / 157 GBP). It is cheaper if you book a private tour as a group of 6 or more people.

Tip : It is definitely worth visiting the island, but it is much better in terms of time and money to start the tour from Cancún or Isla Mujeres, as the boat ride to Isla Contoy is much shorter from there.

Tour Operators : There are currently no operators offering this tour from Holbox (as of April 2024). Several tours to Isla Contoy from Cancún are offered online at GetYourGuide .

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about Holbox tours:

When are the whale sharks in Holbox?

The official whale shark season runs from early June to mid-September. With a little luck, you can see them as early as mid-May.

Can you snorkel in Holbox?

There is no good snorkeling in Holbox itself, as the shallow water around the sandy island is mostly murky. The closest place for snorkeling is the coral reef at Cabo Catoche, for which several boat tours are offered.

Is Holbox Worth Visiting? What You Need To Know Before Booking

By Jessie Festa. This guide to visiting Holbox Island contains affiliate links to trusted partners!

Is Holbox worth visiting?

With so many worthwhile destinations along Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, most of which are easier to get to than Holbox, you may be wondering this yourself.

I pondered this while considering whether making the 2-hour drive to a 25-minute ferry was worth it, or if I’d be better off going somewhere easily drivable from Cancun Airport.

Luckily, if you’re wondering whether visiting Holbox Island is worth the trek, the following guide can help you decide.

As I’ve made the trip to Holbox myself, I’ll be providing an honest look at the pros and cons—while also sharing some important Isla Holbox tips that can make your travels more enjoyable.

Spoiler: I did have a great time on the island, though I think there are some important things to consider before booking, such as what month you’re looking to visit and how many days you’re working with.

I go over this in-depth below! Note that I’ll be using the words “Holbox”, “Isla Holbox”, and “Holbox Island” interchangeably, as they all refer to the same island in Mexico.

⏳ Short on time? My top recommendations for visiting Holbox Island Mexico include: 🏨 Hotel: Hotel Casa Bárbara Holbox . You can also click here for a Holbox map of the local hotels and vacation rentals . 🚗 Airport Transfer: Along with taking the ADO Bus (also bookable on BusBud ), you can take a shared shuttle or a private shuttle 🗺️ Tours: Viator and GetYourGuide 📍 Recommended Excursions: – Classic Three Island Tour – Isla Holbox Mangrove Kayaking Tour – Whale Shark & Snorkeling Adventure from Isla Holbox 🚶‍♀️ Getting Around: You can walk or bike to most of the main things to do on Holbox Island 🏥 Travel Insurance: SafetyWing (budget-friendly) & World Nomads (more comprehensive) 📞 Staying Connected: Airalo eSIM

Where Is Holbox Island Located?

Located in Quintana Roo, Mexico, Isla Holbox sits along the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon filled with vibrant birdlife including flamingos and pelicans, the island is a serene escape.

In fact, it’s also part of the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, which is dedicated to preserving the rich biodiversity of the region’s diverse ecosystems—like coastal dunes, mangroves, and tropical forests—while also promoting sustainable development and eco-tourism initiatives.

This is part of the draw of visiting Isla Holbox, though we’ll touch on this more below!

How To Get To Holbox Island

One of the main reasons why people ask “Is Isla Holbox worth visiting?” is because of how tedious it is to get to.

Unlike Cancun, which is a quick 30-minute drive from Cancun Airport, or Tulum and Playa del Carmen, which are farther but easily accessible by bus, you’ll need to put in more effort to reach Holbox Island.

While there are a few ways to get to Holbox, I recommend booking a  shared shuttle or a  private shuttle  or taking the ADO bus to Chiquilá, where you’ll board a 25-minute ferry to Isla Holbox for 220 Mexican Pesos.

Ferries run about every 30 minutes until 9pm, though note they are frequently late. If you stay in the Holbox Island town center, you’ll be able to easily walk to your hotel from the ferry port.

Note: if the ADO Bus website isn’t working or if you want to book in English, you can also use  BusBud  to book tickets.

For a visual, here is a map showing where Holbox Island is in relation to Cancun Airport:

What Is Isla Holbox Like?

Isla Holbox is an island escape that blends tropical beauty with trendy vibes.

There’s no denying the influence of nearby Tulum in terms of the boho chic restaurants and beach clubs—many featuring Instagrammable seating and loads of macrame accents.

That being said, you can also relax on the beach, walk on a sandbar, kayak through mangroves, swim with manatees, and have other more tranquil experiences and natural adventures.

There is also a big wellness culture, with delicious vegan cafes, yoga classes, and spas—some of which are right on the beach.

Pro tip: for a dose of Mexican culture, sign up for a salsa class. I took one at Che Holbox Hostel & Bar !

Is Holbox Safe?

According to Travel Safe-Abroad , Holbox Island is safe and your risk of being the victim of a violent crime or scam is low—though do be aware of potential dangers with weather events like hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes.

Personally, I never felt unsafe while visiting Holbox. The island’s town center is also lively and well-lit, with many restaurants and bars staying open until 10pm or later.

Is Holbox Worth Visiting?

In all honesty, you’ll find very mixed Isla Holbox reviews online . For those who have visited in the past, it sounds like the island has lost a lot of that quiet, hidden gem feel.

However, as a first-time visitor with few expectations, I really loved my time on this walkable, (almost) car-free island.

There is plenty to do in terms of tours and activities, as well as plenty of coastline to explore and relax on—with soft sand and warm, translucent turquoise waters.

If you love aesthetic restaurants, there are loads of beautiful eateries, wine bars, and rooftops serving delicious food and drink, as well as more local spots. As you explore, you’ll pass loads of colorful street art.

Overall, I would recommend a trip to Holbox—though I highly suggest researching the best time to visit based on the activities you want to do. For instance, visiting during the rainy season or hurricane season can mean a very wet trip.

Additionally, I realize this trip might not be for everyone, so in the next sections we’ll look at the pros and cons of visiting Isla Holbox so you can truly answer the question “Is Holbox worth it for tourists?”

Reasons Why Visiting Holbox Island Is Worth It

There are many reasons why Holbox is worth visiting, like:

1. Holbox has a great food scene

No Isla Holbox travel guide would be complete without mentioning the food!

One of the best things to do on Holbox Island is eat, especially since it’s home to a wide array of delicious and beautiful restaurants—often with trendy interiors and a great ambiance.

Whether you’re looking for Mexican dishes like tacos and burritos or want to go international, you’ll have loads of options. Some of my favorite Holbox restaurants include:

  • Roots Pizza a la Leña , where you can get the famous Holbox Lobster Pizza
  • Barba Negra , which specializes in enormous shrimp and fish tacos
  • Arte Sano , which serves up creative vegan dishes in a hip outdoor space

2. Holbox is safe

I felt completely safe exploring Holbox. While I went with friends, I’d say it’s a great place for solo travel in Mexico and I’d visit again on my own!

3. Holbox is budget-friendly

While I wouldn’t call it cheap, it was budget-friendly.

But, how expensive is Holbox? You can easily find meals for about $10-$20 USD, while group tours cost about $30-$60 USD.

Additionally, my room at Hotel Casa Bárbara Holbox was clean, comfortable, and cute and cost less than $100 USD a night for a private room!

4. You can enjoy vibey beach clubs

When it comes to what to do in Holbox, relaxing in the sun is a must. Luckily, there are some great Holbox beaches to explore.

This is especially true since these stretches of sand are home to plenty of hip beach clubs, particularly along Playa Holbox.

Personally, my favorite Holbox Island beach clubs include:

  • Mandarina . This upscale beach club is part of the Hotel Casa Las Tortugas and offers great service, delicious food, tasty wines, and plenty of beautiful seating—including near a fire pit. Capitán Capitán Beach Club . If you’re looking for a laid-back spot that feels more like a beach bar, this is a top option. La Playa de Ñaña . This Holbox beach club is fun, budget-friendly, and serves delicious tiki drinks.

5. You can have unique local adventures in Holbox

There are certain travel experiences you can’t have in many places, and Holbox Island is home to a few of these.

The main experiences I’m referring to include swimming with whale sharks and kayaking and snorkeling in bioluminescent waters .

Additionally, Holbox is a hotspot for kiteboarding due to the island’s consistent strong winds. You’ll see numerous places offering lessons along Playa Holbox, or you can book a kitesurfing lesson in advance here .

6. You’ll get to explore an important ecological reserve

As Holbox is also part of the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve , you’ll have numerous opportunities to see unique and beautiful birds and other animals around the island.

One of my personal favorite sightings was seeing flamingos near Passion Island (Isla De La Pasión) during a Classic Three Island Tour .

Additionally, during an Isla Holbox Mangrove Kayaking Tour I saw lots of wildlife, including crocodiles!

7. Holbox is walkable

Who doesn’t love not having to spend a fortune on taxis and transportation to get around? In Holbox, you can walk to most of the main attractions—like the beaches—as well as the restaurants and nightlife.

For places that are a bit farther, many visitors choose to bike, opt for the local golf carts, or book a guided tour .

For instance, the Classic Three Island Tour takes you to Yalahau Lagoon , Mosquito Point (Punta Mosquito) , and Passion Island (Isla De La Pasión) .

At certain times of the year, you might also visit Bird Island (Isla Pájaros) instead of Punta Mosquito.

8. You can visit untouched places

While you’ll find plenty of people relaxing on Playa Holbox and walking the sandbar near Mosquito Point, it’s also possible to visit places that feel remote and untouched.

For instance, Cabo Catoche sits 15 miles east of Holbox in the spot where the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea meet.

You can book a boat trip to Cabo Catoche to enjoy snorkeling and diving vibrant reefs, spot wildlife such as dolphins and nurse sharks, and learn traditional fishing techniques that use a line without a pole.

Bonus: your fresh catch will be used to make a tasty ceviche lunch!

9. It’s easy to visit other Mexican destinations

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is home to many beloved destinations. Even from Holbox, the ADO bus as well as public and private shuttles make it easy to visit places like Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Tulum if you’d like to extend your travels in Mexico .

10. You can enjoy a variety of Holbox nightlife

For a more remote destination, Holbox Island nightlife impressed me.

Want to enjoy a glass of wine in a trendy lounge setting? Head to Lazaro Wine Bar .

Looking for a rooftop experience? Soulbox at Hotel Mittoz is the place.

Interested in partying on the beach until late? Dance into the morning hours at Bikini Bottom Holbox .

In short, whether you’re looking for beach bars, a chill upscale setting, to dance in the sand, or something else, you can find it on Holbox Island.

Reasons Not To Visit Holbox Island

While I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Isla Holbox, here are some reasons tourists may want to avoid this Mexican island destination:

1. It’s tricky to get to

While I mentioned above that Holbox is well-connected to other Yucatán Peninsula destinations, it isn’t exactly easy to get to—especially when compared to other places.

Instead of simply hopping in a 30-minute taxi to get to Cancun or taking the bus an hour or two to Playa del Carmen or Tulum, you’ll need to travel two hours by vehicle before boarding a 25-minute ferry to the island.

Additionally, the ferry service ends at 9pm, which can be a big headache if your flight is delayed. This happened to me and was very stressful, though I ultimately made it in time to catch the last ferry.

2. The roads get washed out frequently

During the rainy season, particularly during the hurricane season, Holbox’s sandy roads can become washed out. While this typically isn’t the end of the world, it can make it more unpleasant to get around.

I actually experienced this issue when visiting during Holbox’s dry season in February, as they’d just had a very big and unexpected storm .

3. Garbage can be a problem

Among other reasons, the island’s tourism has grown so rapidly that infrastructure hasn’t been able to keep up, leading to issues with pollution.

When visiting, it’s worth going beyond simply throwing your trash in the garbage. For instance, this could be a good trip to go plastic-free—such as swapping your mini shampoo bottle for a biodegradable shampoo bar .

4. Holbox can feel touristy

While I don’t mind touristy destinations, Holbox Island very much feels like a trendy destination that caters to tourists.

With this in mind, it can be worth seeking out more local and cultural experiences—like a cooking class with La Puerta Rosa or a salsa class at Che Holbox Hostel & Bar .

Additionally, I asked my friend and local Holbox tour guide, Willy of @from_Holbox , what his favorite local restaurants are. He suggests Tacos Santiago , La Barracuda , and Taquería Mateo .

5. Sargassum can be an issue

While the sargassum in Holbox is nothing compared to how bad it gets in Cancun and Tulum, the smelly seaweed still lines the beach at certain times of the year.

When I visited there was some, but I was able to easily walk over it to get into the warm, turquoise waters.

While sargassum seaweed levels fluctuate, consider visiting June through September for clearer waters.

6. It doesn’t feel as remote as you’d think

While it takes almost three hours to reach, you’ll likely still find that it’s relatively crowded, especially if you visit during the high season from December to April.

This may not bother some people; however, as Holbox is often described as a “laid-back island paradise” you may be picturing a quieter island.

How Long To Stay In Holbox Island

Because Holbox takes extra effort to reach, I recommend spending at least four nights.

If you can spend a week there, even better—though do check to see what tours and activities you want to do to map out how many days you’re filling. Personally, I think at least two full beach days is a good idea.

Best Time To Visit Holbox Island

When deciding if Holbox is worth visiting, the month you decide to go will play a huge factor. Because while Holbox Island is a year-round destination, not all seasons are created equal.

June-September

In my opinion, this is the best time to visit Isla Holbox thanks to the sunny weather and comfortable temperatures—not to mention this coincides with whale shark season.

If you’re worried that seaweed will ruin your trip to Holbox, this is also when the island typically sees clearer waters, though this can change year to year.

If you do visit Holbox Island during this time, just be aware that it’s also hurricane season in the Caribbean , so you’re more likely to encounter rain and storms.

That being said, the tradeoff tends to be more flight deals, cheaper hotels, and fewer crowds.

December-April

As the weather is drier, this is Isla Holbox’s high season, meaning you’ll see more tourists and will pay more for your trip.

That being said, I visited Holbox in February and have had a great time—though I was disappointed to miss out on swimming with whale sharks.

There was also some sargassum, but not enough to ruin the trip. It was actually pretty easy to step over it to get to the clearer part of the water.

Tips For Visiting Holbox Island

To help you have a great trip to Holbox, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Get cash at Cancun Airport. While there are ATMs on Isla Holbox, they are occasionally out of service, which can also make the lines for them longer when they do work.

2. Be particular about when you go. Holbox Island is a beach destination with seasonal activities, so not every month is created equal.

Tip: Consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May, or planning your trip around your preferred activities, like visiting in July or August if swimming with whale sharks is important to you.

3. Book your shuttle back when on the island. While I loved having a private shuttle to get there, the public shuttle was perfectly fine for the way back. You can easily book this at one of the many transportation booths on the island.

4. Avoid single-use plastics. This is a good idea for any trip, though it’s especially important when visiting an island that is also a natural reserve.

5. Pack mosquito repellent. Mosquitos can be an issue on Holbox Island, so bring repellent—especially if visiting during the rainy season when they are more prevalent.

Best Holbox Island Tours

One of the best ways to have fun in Holbox while learning about the island is to book top-rated local tours like:

  • 🌴 Classic Three Island Tour
  • 🛶 Isla Holbox Mangrove Kayaking Tour
  • 🐠 Private Boat Trip To Cabo Catoche with Fishing & Snorkeling
  • 🐋 Whale Shark & Snorkeling Adventure from Isla Holbox
  • ✨ Isla Holbox Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour

Where To Stay On Holbox Island

Best areas to stay in holbox.

The two main areas to stay in Holbox are:

  • Holbox Town , which is like a small city with restaurants, bars, rooftops, and shops
  • Playa Holbox , which allows you to stay right on the beach

Holbox Town is walkable to Playa Holbox, though note if you stay on the far west of Playa Holbox it’ll be at least a 30-minute walk to Holbox Town.

Recommended Holbox hotels

🏨 Hotel Casa Bárbara Holbox . I loved this budget-friendly and tropical boutique hotel, which featured comfortable rooms, free WiFi, an outdoor pool, inclusive breakfast, and beautiful outdoor spaces with plants and hammocks to hang out.

🏨 Hotel Casa Las Tortugas . Situated on the beach but also a short walk to the town, this luxury hotel offers the perfect location. Plus, along with beautiful rooms, you’ll have access to loads of amenities like an infinity pool, a sumptuous spa, and numerous delicious restaurants to choose from.

Holbox vs Other Yucatan Destinations

Isla holbox vs isla mujeres.

One question that consistently comes up is whether travelers should visit Holbox Island or Isla Mujeres.

I’ve visited both, and while each offers beautiful beaches and warm waters, I found Isla Mujeres to have much more of a party vibe—almost to an over-the-top extent, at least in my opinion.

While you can certainly party and have a good time on Holbox, it’s more about beach clubs and bird-watching than bachelor and bachelorette parties.

Isla Holbox vs Playa del Carmen

When compared to Playa del Carmen, Isla Holbox offers a quieter and less developed setting. You’ll find a lot more to do in Playa del Carmen and there are also many all-inclusive resorts if you want that experience.

However, if you want a laid-back island vibe over something more bustling, Holbox is the way to go.

Isla Holbox vs Tulum

Tulum is known for its ancient ruins overlooking the Caribbean Sea and a trendy beachfront scene, while Isla Holbox offers a more rustic and off-the-beaten-path experience with fewer crowds.

Also note that while Mexican beaches are supposed to be public and free, the pricey beachfront resorts and beach clubs in Tulum have made it nearly impossible to just walk onto the sand due to their tall gates and security guards.

Additionally, unlike Holbox which is very walkable, it’s tricky to get between the town and the beach in Tulum, and you’ll likely end up spending a lot of money on pricey cabs and sitting in a lot of traffic.

Isla Holbox vs Cancun

While both offer access to stunning beaches and water activities, Cancun is a bustling tourist hub with loads of enormous all-inclusive resorts and a loud and crazy nightlife district with blaring clubs and people dressed up as The Mask on the sidewalk outside of Coco Bongo.

You’ll find more options for things to do near Cancun, though it’s a place that feels 100% made for tourists, particularly in the Hotel Zone. If you’re looking for a quieter and more eco-conscious experience, Holbox is the better choice.

Holbox Island Travel Insurance

When visiting Holbox Island—or anywhere else in the world—it’s wise to get travel insurance.

For this, I have two recommendations:

SafetyWing . If you’re looking for something straightforward and budget-friendly, you can’t beat SafetyWing. They offer one global policy that you can cancel at any time or continue paying for long-term coverage (making it the perfect option for digital nomads!).

Their plan includes medical coverage, trip interruptions, personal liability, unplanned overnight stays, lost luggage, and more.

World Nomads . For something more comprehensive, World Nomads is a great option. While you’ll pay a bit more, you’ll typically get higher coverage maximums as well as additional inclusions—like trip cancellation.

Best Time To Visit Holbox Island, Mexico

Trying to figure out the best time to visit Holbox Island, Mexico ?

You’ve come to the right place!

Holbox Island is a popular vacation spot off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, Holbox is a perfect spot for wildlife watching, basking on white sand beaches with shallow waters, and enjoying a laid-back beach lifestyle.

But what is the best time to go to Holbox Island?

The island has a humid tropical climate similar to the rest of the Yucatán Peninsula, and while you can enjoy the island most of the time, there’s always a chance of rain.

I’ve traveled all over Mexico, including visits to Holbox several times during rainy and dry seasons. Because of this, I have first-hand knowledge of how different the weather can be on this island depending on the time of the year.

This guide will tell you about the best months to visit Holbox so you can enjoy a fun vacation with the best weather and the most sunshine.

Note: This guide uses the names “Holbox Island”, “Isla Holbox,” and “Holbox” interchangeably. They all refer to the same island destination in Mexico .

Short on time? My top recommendations for visiting Holbox Island Mexico include:

Hotel: Hotel Casa Bárbara Holbox . You can also click here for a Holbox hotel map .

Airport Transfer: Along with taking the ADO Bus (also bookable on BusBud ), you can take a shared shuttle or a private shuttle

Tours: Viator and GetYourGuide

Where Is Isla Holbox?

Holbox is located along the Gulf of Mexico, right off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Specifically, it belongs to the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and lies within the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.

This location allows it to have some of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches. In fact, along with Playa Santispac in Baha California and the beautiful beaches in Campeche , Holbox has some of my favorite stretches of sand in Mexico!

What Is The Weather Like In Holbox?

The weather in Holbox is warm and tropical year-round, but the island has distinct seasons.

The dry season—which runs from December to April—has generally clear skies with little to no rain and less humidity, making it an excellent time for beach activities and outdoor exploration.

The wet season from June to October sees increased rainfall, occasional storms, and higher humidity; however, even during the wet season, you can still experience some sunny days.

Best Time To Visit Holbox Island

High season vs shoulder season.

The best time to visit Holbox is from December through March when the island has perfect sunny weather and minimal chance of rain.

It’s also the busiest time on the island when the prices of hotels and tours tend to be the most expensive.

If you want to avoid the crowds and save money, visit Holbox during November or May , which are shoulder months. Both months to visit Holbox mark the transition between dry and rainy seasons.

Winter crowds usually die down in May, because the weather on Holbox Island becomes hotter and more humid.

Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to book a whale shark tour in late May, as the whale shark season runs from mid-May to mid-September. Just note that May only sees occasional sightings, with peak season being July and August.

On the other hand, November is usually a quiet month after the hurricane season when you can enjoy pleasant sunny weather and take advantage of lower prices before the busy winter season kicks in.

Cheapest time to visit Holbox

The cheapest time to visit Holbox is during the hurricane season from late August through October. While you will save on accommodations and activities, the inclement weather can negatively affect your travel plans, making it difficult to enjoy this destination.

Least busy time to visit Holbox

The least busy time to visit Holbox is from June through the end of October when tourism on the island dies down because of more frequent rain.

Hurricane season in Holbox

August marks the beginning of the hurricane season in Holbox and the rest of the region. This is the worst time to visit Holbox when the island experiences rainstorms and inclement weather that can disrupt your plans.

Holbox has dirt roads, which get washed out during the rainy season, making it challenging to get around without getting covered in mud.

Precipitation during the hurricane season is usually more intense than during May and June when rains tend to be more sporadic and happen in the afternoon.

Holbox Weather By Month

Here is a look at the Isla Holbox weather by month. The information is based on analyzing the AccuWeather calendars as well as the Climate Data website.

Isla Holbox weather in January

January is a popular month for visiting Holbox because of the sunny weather and clear blue skies. It’s also one of the busiest months on the island when many travelers visit to escape the cold weather up north.

However, it’s also the coldest month in Holbox, with temperatures fluctuating between just below 55°F to 86°F (13°C to 30°C).

Isla Holbox weather in February

February is another popular month for visiting thanks to the dry and mild climate on Isla Holbox.

The first half of February is chillier with temperatures getting down to 57°F (14°C); however, the second half of the month is warmer with temperatures ranging from 63°F to 86°F (17°C to 30°C).

Isla Holbox weather in March

March is when temperatures in Holbox start to increase gradually. Expect temperatures of about 59°F to 90°F (15°C to 32°C).

The high season in Holbox begins to wind down in March, and it’s a good time to score better deals on hotels and tours, especially in the second half of the month.

Isla Holbox weather in April

April is the transition month between winter and summer in Holbox. Temperatures continue to rise during this month to about 70°F to 93°F (21°C to 34°C). April is the last month before the island starts to get very hot and humid.

Isla Holbox weather in May

May marks the transition to low season in Holbox. Temperatures continue the upward trend, and you can expect a range of about 74°F to 93°F (23°C to 34°C).

May is also the beginning of the seaweed season in Holbox. Also known as “sargazo” in Spanish or “sargassum”, seaweed is a smelly algae that washes up on many Caribbean beaches from late spring through fall.

While the seaweed in Tulum has long been a problem, for a while, Holbox escaped the issue; however, in recent years, it started showing up on Holbox beaches .

Isla Holbox weather in June

Check the Holbox Island weather forecast before heading out, as June is the beginning of the rainy season. While temperatures fluctuate from about 74°F to 93°F (23°C to 34°C), humidity and precipitation increase significantly compared to May.

Isla Holbox weather in July

Holbox continues to see rain in July, although it’s typically more occasional than continuous. If you come to Holbox during this time of the year you can still enjoy your trip; but, be prepared for increased chances of showers and muddy roads.

The temperature in Holbox Island at this time ranges from 74°F to 93°F (23°C to 34°C).

Isla Holbox weather in August

The weather in Isla Holbox, Mexico during August is sticky, with humidity levels continuing to rise throughout the month.

Additionally, hurricane season officially kicks off at the end of August—which is also the hottest month of the year in Holbox, with temperatures ranging from 75°F to 93°F (24°C to 34°C).

Isla Holbox weather in September

September is the first hurricane month in Holbox when the island experiences drastic changes in weather with heavy rainstorms, gusty winds, and limited opportunities for activities.

During this time, the precipitation averages about 31 inches of rain, and temperatures fluctuate from about 73°F to 91°F (23°C to 33°C).

Isla Holbox weather in October

October is the rainiest month in Holbox, with an average of 48 inches of precipitation. It’s the worst month to visit as many places close down because of the constant rain and lack of visitors.

Temperatures during October in Holbox tend to be between 66°F to 90°F (19°C to 32°C).

Isla Holbox weather in November

November is the end of the rainy season in Holbox when you still see some precipitation; but, there’s more sun and tourism starts to pick up slowly.

Precipitation decreases in November with an average of about 26 inches per month. Temperatures range from about 68°F to 88°F (20°C to 31°C).

In my opinion, this is possibly the best time to visit Holbox, as it’s a shoulder month, meaning you can score deals and the weather is still pleasant.

Isla Holbox weather in December

December is one of the colder months in Holbox and it marks the beginning of the busy winter season. The weather is mostly dry and sunny and temperatures range from about 64°F to 88°F (18°C to 31°C).

Seasons In Holbox

Like the rest of the Yucatán Peninsula, Holbox has two seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

Holbox rainy season

Pros & cons.

The rainy season in Holbox is from June through October. During these months, the island experiences increased precipitation and higher humidity.

If you visit Holbox from June through early August, you can still enjoy outdoor activities, as rains tend to be more sporadic than continuous and usually occur in the afternoon.

Lower prices . The rainy season in Holbox is the best time to save money on accommodations, tours, and even street food. Many vendors on the island are willing to haggle at least a bit during this time as there is a limited number of visitors (though try to be mindful of this, too).

  • Better opportunities for wildlife watching. One of the top things to do in Holbox is spot wild animals. Because the island tends to be less busy from June through October, you can typically spot them more easily.

Fewer crowds . If you don’t want to visit Holbox during the busy season, the summer months are a great alternative, as they are generally quiet due to the lack of crowds.

Not much going on. On the other hand, if you are looking for a lively atmosphere, the rainy season might not be the ideal time for your trip to Holbox, because things begin to slow down when June comes around.

Higher chances of rain . If you are visiting Holbox from June through August, expect to see some rain on your visit, and if you are visiting it from September through October, be ready for the chance of a hurricane.

  • Not the best time to enjoy Holbox. While you can sit out an occasional rain and go back to your activities later, waiting for a hurricane to pass could take a couple of days, which is not ideal, especially if you only have limited time on the island.

Places to go in Holbox during the rainy season

If you visit Holbox during the rainy season when you can’t always enjoy the beach, consider going to places on the mainland like Valladolid and Merida to explore the culture of the Yucatán .

Valladolid is a designated Pueblo Mágico , famous for its cenotes and pastel-colored architecture. It’s also a gateway to Chichen Itza and you can easily combine the two activities.

Merida is the capital of Yucatán and is known for its rich culture and history. In fact, it’s the cultural hub of the peninsula and is the second-largest city in the region after Cancun . The city boasts an ornate central plaza, several landmarks, and museums.

If you are looking to get some authentic Mexican crafts created by local artisans, there’s no better place than La Casa De Las Artesanias de Yucatan in Merida, a large gallery-style store where you can purchase goods made by Indigenous groups from across Mexico, including Yucatán.

Things to do in Holbox during the rainy season

See Holbox wildlife. If you’re interested in seeing whale sharks or sea turtles, the best time to go to Isla Holbox is July and August, which is peak whale shark season.

This is when these gentle giants migrate to the area to feed on plankton. Adult whale sharks can reach up to 41,000 pounds and up to 33 feet in length.

And while they are huge, swimming next to them is perfectly safe as long as you keep your distance and don’t bother them. When booking a whale shark tour , carefully read other travelers’ reviews to make sure you support an ethical company.

While you have the highest chance of seeing whale sharks during this time of the year, there is never a guarantee. Watch out for companies that make promises or tell you that they follow whale sharks closely. Whale sharks are protected by law, and all tour operators have to maintain a safe distance.

Similarly, sea turtle nesting season occurs from May to September, with peak nesting activity usually in June and July.

Restaurant hop. Isla Holbox is home to many delicious restaurants, some offering trendy vibes and others providing a more local experience. You can even gamify the experience by challenging yourself to find the best tacos on the island.

My personal favorite for this is Barba Negra , which serves up fish and shrimp tacos packed with filling.

Take a cooking class. La Puerta Rosa offers morning, evening, and private cooking classes in Holbox. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in local culture on the island.

Listen to live music. Many of the bars and restaurants on Holbox host live music acts. While you can ask your hotel what’s going on that day or night, you can also simply wander around Holbox Town and let your ear be your guide.

Take a class. Holbox Island is home to a rich wellness culture, so you’ll find options for yoga and fitness classes at places like Samah Wellness  and  Holbox Yoga  (which does yoga on the beach!).

For some cultural fun, you might also take a local salsa class at Che Holbox Hostel & Bar , the local chapter of Salsa Lovers Worldwide, or a local studio.

Get a spa treatment. Speaking of wellness, you can also relax at one of the many spas on the island. A top recommendation includes Aguas Spa , located within the luxurious  Hotel Casa Las Tortugas .

Things to pack for the rainy season in Holbox

The rainy season in Holbox Island means you might need to pack some additional gear, including:

Waterproof jacket . This is a must-have in case it starts raining.

Mosquito repellent. Regardless of the season, pack mosquito repellent on your trip to Holbox to avoid bites.

Quick drying clothes . When visiting Holbox during the rainy season, bring lightweight clothes from materials that dry fast.

Swimsuit. While the rainy season brings more precipitation to Holbox, you can still enjoy some water activities and go for a swim. Personally, I love the bathing suits and beach coverups from Kenny Flowers .

Sunscreen . Especially as Isla Holbox is located within the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, it’s important to pack reef-friendly sunscreen for your trip.

Holbox Dry Season

The dry season in Holbox is from December through April. It’s the best time on the island when thousands of visitors arrive to enjoy the perfect sunny weather in this tropical paradise.

  • Plenty to do. Businesses are in full swing in Holbox during the dry season, as it’s when most tour agencies, restaurants, and hotels make their money. Unlike summer months, when some places close for the season, winter is when you have the most options on the island.

Perfect weather. If you are looking for picture-perfect weather, the dry season is the best time to visit Holbox.

  • Great parties. Depending on what you are looking for, this could be a pro or con. The dry season is when most people travel to Holbox, and you can be sure that you will find some great beach parties on the island in many bars and restaurants. You can also enjoy the many Holbox beach clubs .

High prices. The peak months in Holbox are December and January when prices are the highest. It’s a busy time for international tourism when many people visit to escape the cold weather in their home countries.

  • Crowds. Holbox can get very crowded in winter, especially during holidays like New Year and Christmas, when many domestic and international tourists come to celebrate.

Tougher to spot wildlife. If you travel to Holbox during the high season, it could be tougher to spot wildlife, as many animals move away from busy parts of the island and go deeper into the Yum Balam Reserve.

Places to go in Holbox during the dry season

Yum Balam Nature Reserve. One of the best places to visit in Holbox, Yum Balam is a protected area that can be visited with a guided tour from Holbox. I booked a kayaking tour of Yum Balam during my trip and had a great time paddling through the mangroves and spotting different animals like crocodiles, flamingoes, and other birds.

Islands around Holbox. Taking a Classic 3 Island Tour is one of the most popular excursions from Holbox and includes visits to Yalahau Cenote , Punta Mosquito (Mosquito Point), and Isla Pasión (Passion Island). At certain times of the year, you might also visit Isla Pájaros (Bird Island) instead of Punta Mosquito.

Things to do in Holbox during the dry season

High season is the best time to bask in the sun on Holbox beaches, enjoy a lively atmosphere at Holbox restaurants, and take tours. Below are some of the most popular activities on Holbox during the high season:

Spot bioluminescence. Isla Holbox is one of the handful of places in Mexico where you can see bioluminescence—a natural phenomenon that occurs when plankton in the water emit light through a chemical reaction.

The easiest way to see bioluminescence is by joining a guided bioluminescent kayaking tour ; but, you can also take a quick trip to Playa Punta Cocos on the west side of Holbox.

I was able to see bioluminescence on Playa Holbox at night. All you need to do is walk into the water and make movements with your hands to see the glowing plankton.

Take a kite surfing lesson. Isla Holbox is one of the best spots for kite surfing in the Yucatán Peninsula thanks to plenty of wind and shallow waters. There are several kite surfing schools around the island where you can hire an instructor or you can book a kitesurfing lesson in advance here .

Rent a paddleboard. Early morning is the best time to paddle board around Holbox when the island has calm, glass-like waters. There are numerous places where you can rent a paddleboard or even book an aquatic adventure tour, like Kayaking Holbox .

Rent a bicycle. Biking is a popular way to get around Holbox thanks to the compact size of this island. You can rent one at places like Bikes Holbox .

Things to pack for the dry season in Holbox

Swimwear. The dry season is the best time to enjoy water activities in Holbox like swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling. Again, I love the bathing suits and beach coverups from Kenny Flowers .

Mosquito repellent. Always have a mosquito repellent in your bag when heading to Holbox or other parts of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. The weather is generally warm and sunny in Holbox from December through March, so make sure to pack light clothing.

Flip flops and sandals . Don’t forget about beach footwear.

Worst Time To Visit Holbox Island

The worst time to visit Isla Holbox is during September and October, which are the wettest months of the year. This is also when activities are limited and many businesses close down.

If you are looking for a more relaxed getaway, it’s a good idea to skip Holbox during major holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter when the island gets busy and there are usually loud parties and music.

If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months of May and November when the weather is still pleasant but there are fewer tourists.

Travel Insurance For Holbox Island

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
