Famous bus for sale

Possibly one of the most famous buses ever is for sale at auction, but potential bidders are expected to need deep pockets.

A classic double-decker with a famous history is going under the hammer, and will be on display in London for what organisers say could be the final time, depending on the outcome of the sale. Paul McCartney’s 1972 Wings tour bus, also said to be the largest remaining item of Beatles memorabilia, will be on display as part of the Classic Car Boot Sale event held at Kings Cross in London on 27 and 28 April.

Paul McCartney used the bus to transport his family and his new band Wings on his first major tour ever without The Beatles. It features bunk beds for his children Heather, Mary and Stella, a fridge, a stove and a stereo system. With its famous rock star on board, the bus embarked on The 1972 Wings Over Europe Tour, followed by the world’s media and covering over 7,500 miles across nine countries and 25 cities.

The bus is a Bristol KSW5G, and was new in 1953 with bodywork by Eastern Coachworks. Originally built with a closed upper deck, it was new to operator Eastern National and initially based in Chelmsford, Essex for local bus routes. It was converted to an open-top bus in 1966 and used to transport holiday-makers to and from Butlins in Clacton.

Following the Wings tour, the bus returned to more mundane service, with its psychedelic paint scheme removed and standard seating re-instated, but was out of service by 1980. It was saved from scrap in 1982 by Roger White, who spared no expense restoring the bus, including re-applying the Wings colours, before being acquired by a new private buyer and displayed outside a rock cafe in Tenerife during the 1990s as a tourist attraction.

The bus was returned to the UK in 2017 after being rediscovered in an open secure storage area around 2009, and acquired by the current owner in 2019.

It was entrusted to two specialists for restoration: David Hoare of Chepstow Classic Buses and Bradley Earl of Simon Morris Thorpe in Essex. The bus is licensed by Sir Paul McCartney’s company MPL to display the artwork, logos, band member’s names and personal photos. The interior has been returned to how it was on the Wings tour, with bespoke decor and seats cleared from the upper deck, which has been adapted to be used as a stage for live music events.

The Bristol is powered by a 6,975cc Gardner 5LW NA five-cylinder engine, and has a four-speed manual gearbox. It is being sold by specialist auctioneers Car & Classic.

Their decision was to NOT charge a client an overdrive at 450 miles, but rather at 501 miles.

This was a HUGE move on their part. Unheard of in the industry. They were mocked and ridiculed by their esteemed colleagues in the industry.

Most of the time, this is not a problem, as most bands are staying within our 10,000 pound limit for GVWT (Gross Vehicle Weight, or a loaded trailer)...

By the way, for you Production Managers, our trailers weight about 4,500 pounds empty, leaving you about 5,500 pounds for the gear / merch...

Anyhow, a more frequent occurrence is that we find ourselves receiving a frantic call from our drivers at pick up stating that "this trailer is very heavy"...

So we instruct the driver to immediately weigh the full trailer, only to find that the GVWT is over 10,000 pounds... This becomes a new problem...

To battle this potential problem, we suggest making sure your packed load is less than 5,500 pounds, and if you must exceed that limit, act BEFORE the tour pick up...

Paul McCartney's famed psychedelic Wings 1972 tour bus goes on sale

• 1953 open-top double decker bus chosen by Wings for 1972 tour goes on sale for estimated £150-£200k
• Pop history bus restored meticulously to Wings' style with Geoffrey Cleghorn's psychedelic exterior artwork
• Comes with display licence for artwork, logos, band member's names and personal photos taken on the tour

The famed psychedelic Wings tour bus that housed rock legend Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, his family and the band is heading for auction next week.

In a rare opportunity to snap up a time capsule of rock 'n' roll history, the double-decker bus that took Wings on a Europe Tour during the summer of 1972 is up for sale with Car & Classics, with pre-bids already open.

The auction runs from 22 to 29 April with bids expected to reach between £150,000 and £200,000.

Paul McCartney fans can get their hands on rock 'n' roll legacy set in perfect period condition, with the bus having been meticulously restored to the heyday of the bands' success and styled to recall The Beatles' Yellow Submarine album cover.

The 1953 open-topped bus travelled 7,500 miles across nine countries and 25 cities , taking Wings on tour. 

It quickly gained worldwide fame, becoming the epicentre of an extraordinary band and family adventure.

Before Paul McCartney chose it for the Wings' tour, it was first used in the early '50's for Chelmsford bus routes as a closed upper deck bus before being converted to an open-top bus in '66 to take holiday-makers to and from Butlins.

In full running and working order - UK road registered and MOT testing and road tax exempt - the Bristol Gardner-powered 5LW 7-litre diesel bus is ready to take rock to the roads again. 

As well as the perfectly recreated Geoffrey Cleghorn's exterior artwork, the interior has been perfectly restored to the era's atmosphere by David Hoare of Chepstow Classic Buses and Bradley Earl of Simon Morris Thorpe Ltd in Essex.

The revamped interior has wooden bunk beds (reflecting the original sleeping space for the band members' children), bright yellow curtains and the upper deck has a bespoke cover displaying '1972 Wings Tour Bus' graphics on the roof.

Wings' drummer Denny Seiwell has even donated his 1972 Wings touring trunk which accompanies the bus. 

In additional rock era touches, the top deck restoration drew inspiration from The Beatles Rooftop Concert of 1969, featuring a newly imagined and engineered  performance space, now aptly named 'The McCartney Stage'. 

The bus wasn't just a comfortable way to travel Europe, it became the four-wheeled symbol of the tour that marked the rise of Wings after the glory days of The Beatles. 

And it's not beyond the realms of possibility that numerous hit songs were potentially written within, including the iconic Bond theme 'Live and Let Die' recorded later that same year (1972) .

McCartney said in an interview: 'We knew we were going to tour in Europe and that the weather would be nice, and the idea of being stuck in a bus all the time, going from city to city, hotel to hotel, wasn't too appealing so we decided to travel around in an open-top bus and get some sunshine as we travelled from one place to another.'

Post-tour, the bus went back into active public service, before being bought in 2019 and restored in 2022. 

Since its been  used to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the pivotal 1972 Wings Over Europe Tour at The Classic Motor Show at the NEC, Birmingham, in November 2022.

Now this piece of automotive history offers a glimpse into the 'swinging Sixties', Carnaby Street, and the universal message of peace and love. 

Incredibly it comes with the license by Sir Paul McCartney's company MPL to display the artwork, logos, band member's names and personal photos taken on the tour. It will be sold with artefacts and memorabilia. 

Ready for its next custodian, this vehicle is likely to reach up to £200,000 on the online auction.

It's one of just three  Beatles-related, custom-painted vehicles alongside John Lennon's psychedelic Rolls-Royce and George Harrison's similarly decorated Mini.

It's been features in numerous interviews and photographs with McCartney, Wings and even Princess Anne, as well as articles published worldwide.

Want to feel like a real Muscovite and experience the atmosphere or this extraordinary city in just a few hours? Then explore ithe main artery of Moscow - the Garden Ring.

After you visited the ancient Kremlin, explored the area of Kitay Gorod and enjoyed the sights of White city, it's time to move on and take a ride along the 17th century border of Moscow - the Garden Ring.

After we explore the Stalin skyscraper -  building of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we will turn to Old Arbat pedestrian zone. You will see lovely houses of 19 centuries and feel the atmosphere of old Moscow, as the Arbat preserved it almost untouched.

In 90-s Arbat was chosen by the members of numerous subcultures as the place for hangout. Nowadays Arbat is Bohemian place and one of Moscow's symbols. But long time ago it was just a suburb.

Soon we’ll find ourselves on New Arbat, that was founded in 60-s, and was conceived as a government road. This New Arbat dramatically differs from the Old Arbat.

Patriarch Ponds

One more beloved place among the Muscovites with a very rich history. A lots of famous and outstanding personalities lived in this area: poets, scientists, militaries and even criminals. In 17 century Patriarch Hermogenus founded a Patriarch's village here, hence the name. Moreover, this place is famous all over the world thanks to the genius Russian writer M. Bulgakov. He chose Patriarch's ponds as the scene of his novel "The Master and Margarita".

Hermitage Garden

The next coziest and memorable place for all of Muscovites is Hermitage Garden. Before the Revolution it was a Bohemian place, frequently attended by the great actors and writers, art workers, and patrons. Here for the first time in Moscow a movie of Lumiere's brothers was shown. Today tradition continues and there are two theaters inside the park, lots of memorials and fun.

Museon Park & Gorky Park

Today Muscovites can't imagine their leisure activities without visiting Museon Statues Park and Gorky Park. These are fun areas. Crimean bridge

What is the garden ring in moscow.

Actually, we call the Garden Ring  a series of streets, separated by the squares.

A great number of fascinating and historical places a re situated on the Garden Ring.  Traveling along that street, you can briefly learn about all main areas of Moscow, learn its history and meaning. It will help you to navigate Moscow better and surely you can feel more like a local on this tour.

Every square on the Garden Ring has its own historical background. For example, Sukharevskaya square in 19 century hosted a market. It was very popular among Muscovites, but usually stolen things were sold there. Often people had to buy there their own stuff again after it was stolen. The Smolenskaya, Crimean, Serpukhovskaya, Taganskaya squares were market places too.

Triumphalnaya square bears its name in memory of triumphal arch that stood here to commemorate the victory over Sweden, built by the order of Peter the Great, as well as Red Gate square placed another triumphal arch. In the beginning of 20 century Triumphal square was a cultural place. Several theaters were situated there, Meyerhold’s theater among them, a circus and a park.

Three squares of the Garden Ring became real battlefields during the revolution between the bolsheviks and tsar's supporters in 1917. And finally capitulation of royal regime was signed in the building, situated on the Garden Ring.

"And the Garden ring became a wedding ring to us…"

These are words from the official soundtrack to the very popular soviet movie "Moscow does not believe in tears" that has won an American Academy Award for the best foreign language film in 1980. Not coincidentally Garden Ring is mentioned in this song as a symbol of Moscow. As it is very important part of our city, it reflects all historical events beginning from the end of 16th century.

A Garden Ring? No. An earthern rampart!

The territory outside White city's wall was called Earthern city . The Earthern city was an area were traditionally poor citizens used to settle: peasants and craftsmen. In comparison with the White city this area has always been dirty and less prestigious. For example, in White city streets were paved in stone and buildings stood on the stone basements while Earthern city had only wooden houses.

This area was proclaimed as a part of Moscow only in 1593. And great fortification wooden wall, that surrounded the territory of Earthern city, was erected by the order of tsar Fyodor Ioannovich only in a year and was called "Skorodom" - fast-built house. Outside Skorodom was additionally fortificated with the moat and the rampart.

In Times of Troubles Skorodom was burnt down by Poles and restored by the Great Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich the Silent. Finally it had 57 towers and 11 entry gates.  Nowadays on that spots, where gates once stood, you can spot the main squares of Moscow.

Skorodom was destroyed and restored a lot's of times: during the Times of Troubles, Napoleon's invasion, in frequent Moscow fires. And finally in 1830 Skorodom was demolished as it lost its functions.

Miraculous transfiguration on Stalin’s orders

In 1917 the Great October revolution blew up everything that seemed to be right at that time. And in 1930-s Moscow was reconstructed… again. This time communists were making Moscow a model of communistic city. Surely that large-scale reconstruction touched the Garden Ring. The road was widened up to 60-70 meters, paved and became a ring with the help of new bridges: Crimean and Krasnokholmskiy. Since that time the Garden Ring is considered the main artery of Moscow.

It was great to be able to be there by ourselves and the monk that showed us around and Anton both were obviously very passionate about the monastery so you were able to understand much better what the various churches and icons meant to them The view from the bell tower was awesome even if the climb up took some faith! We organized that tour from Australia well ahead of time, planning to visit Zvenigorod with big group of extended family and friends with teens as part of our New Year trip to Moscow. The actual day was organized very good, taken into account mixed group of adults, born in USSR and kids, born in Australia. Anton organized our activities to be suitable for all of us. As adults, we were enjoyed country side during winter and Monastery's quietness and ability to jump to the cold "holy" water at one of the oldest Monasteries of Russia - Savva Storoghevskiy Man Monastery. That was the most amazing and nearly magical experience! Kids were enjoyed of snow and treats Anton provide for us, including buisquits and Sbiten'. We also visited very interesting Museum of Russian desserts and learn a lot about ancient russian sweets; have a look on our past in the Museum of USSR and bought some yammie things to enjoy later. In general we all agree that our tour to Zvenigorod with Anton was enjoyable and educational; well organized and unforgettable. We wish we would have more time there! I went with the family, my husband and two daughters and they enjoyed every minute. Anton was very attentive to our needs and have good connections with the local communities. We tasted delicious Russian lunch on this tour. We had a fun time painting our Russian dolls (matryoshka) and finished the trip with a great feeling of connection to Russian culture, tasty food, fantastic people and magnificent architecture.   Do not hesitate to book this tour. He took us down the bunker 43 meter down the surface, explained about the heavy doors and let us open them, kept us informed about its functions and introduced us whatever exhibits were left there. There is an interesting balance of history, access you would not expect around a monastery, the visuals of the architecture and decoration, unique chance to observe the inner workings of the monastery, views from vantage points and the towers. Favourite parts included climbing the bell tower for the bell ringing and an exceptionally good meal. The metro is so interesting and important for local citizens, Red Square is amazing, St. Basil cathedral was iconic both outside and even more interesting inside. It was both interesting and educational seeing central Moscow streets. Anton managed to book us a table for lunch with delicious local food and he helped us with recommendations for dinner (booked is a table as well). Brilliant job, Moscow with locals!
