Ratings and Reviews

5 star rating.

just want the developer team pay more effort in system maintenance and development. There some times appear some bugs on my ipad, or syncing issue, overall I very like the app. Been using for 5 years. I hope the developer team continuning the dedication so I can expect not to loose my entries and stwitch platforms in the long run.

Not worth it

I've had a frustrating experience with this app for a few years now. I started journeling on the free version to see if I wanted to eventually upgrade. I entered 20 or so times and decided to export my entries to make sure I have a copy. For this feature you must pay (you can basically say this for any of the functional features). After lots of research, and waiting for a person to chat with that never arrived (despite being during the so called hours of opperation), I realized I could export my entries one at a time. They intentionally make it hard so that you must upgrade, but I would not give them the privelage. I mannually exported each one and am deleting this app. This is the Spirit Airlines of journal app LOL. Want to add your location? You must pay. Export entries? You must pay. Oh, you want to use Google as your cloud? Nope. Want to move your entries from Google to their cloud? You must download your entries (one at a time mind you) to your computer THEN upload them back to their server. Shouldn't it be easy to do it in the app? Yes. Do they offer this? No. I really don't see the difference in the app and entering doc files into google drive in a folder called "journal entries." Please don't give you money to this company.

Developer Response ,

Hi, thanks for the feedback. Automatic migration will be part of our to-do features this year. The current method of migrating to another cloud services is via through export/import. Once again, thank you for your patience and hope to seek your kind understanding.

Fantastic Journal App

I love this app. It is absolutely fantastic and honestly I can't give any reason why not to use it. With that said I do think that the journey cloud is super limited. The web app is super nice but you can really only use the features if you connect to the journey cloud storage. However, the cloud storage has limited space and journal entries so the web app version is very limiting. There is a workaround the the bove issue, that is you can just download the app on any device rather than use the web app and connect it to google drive and you are able to do everything that the web app didn't let you do without the cloud storage.
Thank you so much for the kind feedback.

The 5 Best Sites to Keep an Online Journal

Journaling can be really useful. So, if you're looking to keep an online journal, here's a round-up of the five best sites that you can use to do so.

There are many benefits to journaling, but trying to keep physical copies of your thoughts can become difficult and cumbersome. What happens if you forget your journal, or worse yet, lose it? What can you do if you don’t have a pen?

Online journaling suffers from none of these problems, and even has some benefits unique to its medium. The only concern left, then, is how to find the right place to write your thoughts online.

Hopefully, this list will help you do just that. Here are five of the best websites to keep an online journal.

The first entry on this list is Journey, a self-care journal and planner which is available across just about every platform you might think of. If you’re looking for something you can easily access, regardless of where you are, then Journey might be right for you.

Journey lets you record just about any aspect of your life. You can track photos from your day, or even make a travel journal out of locations you’ve visited.

You can also keep track of your fitness and mood levels to help recognize personal patterns over the course of days and even months.

Plus, if you’re new to journaling, Journey supports guided journaling coach programs. These programs will provide you with a variety of self-care topics in order to guide your journaling.

Related: Digital Journal Apps to Boost Mental Health With a Daily Diary

Composing your journal entries is quick and easy as well, and Journey even supports the ability to compose entries via email, which you can then later send to your unique Journey email address.

If you’re worried about your journal being accessed by others, then Journey has you covered there as well. You can set up a passcode to prevent anyone else from viewing your journal and to keep your innermost thoughts private.

You can access everything Journey has to offer online via their web app, or you can download it on just about any platform you might wish.

Next on the list comes Penzu. Penzu is a clean and easy-to-use service which makes journaling quicker and easier than it’s ever been.

You need to sign up before you can use this service, but once you have, you’ll be able to set your journal up in just the way that you want it. The colors of the cover, the title, fonts, and backgrounds are all adjustable to your liking.

Once you have your journal set up, all that’s left to do is to write. There are a variety of fonts that you can use, as well as a word counter and various tools such as the ability to insert images, tags, and more. There’s even the option to load a variety of prompts if you need inspiration on what to write about.

All of the above features are available for free, but Penzu also supports a series of premium plans. If you wanted to have more than one journal or a wider variety of options for backgrounds, covers, and pads, then these premium plans are probably what you’re looking for.

There are also additional options such as custom writing reminders which you can set up so that you don’t forget to write every day or as often as you like, as well as better recovery options and journal encryption.

3. Evernote

Evernote has been around for quite some time, and though it’s designed and known as a note-taking service, it functions impressively well as a journaling service as well.

If you already use Evernote, then setting up a journal is just as easy as creating a new notebook. You can even set up a series of tags to organize your posts and arrange any notes.

Related: Journal Apps and Printables to Build a Habit of Daily Journaling

If you know nothing about Evernote, don’t fret. Evernote is a web service that can be synchronized with several devices such as online, desktop, and mobile. Within it, you can easily take notes in a number of forms.

You can organize your home page into whatever arrangement works best for you, and easily tag and include PDFs, receipts, files, photos, images, and more. Annotating what you’ve written is easy as well, and you can even include sketches or calendar dates if you need as well.

4. Dabble Me

If you’re looking for something a little more straightforward, however, then why not give Dabble Me a shot? Dabble Me is an online journaling service which emails you every day asking you how your day went.

All you have to do is reply with whatever is on your mind. You can even attach a photo to remind you of your day if you so wish.

Dabble Me also includes a previous entry every time it sends you a reminder, which you can then use as inspiration for your journal entry.

The service is relatively limited if you’re not paying, however. Dabble Me will only send email prompts every other Sunday, and you’ll have no access to more advanced features such a rich text formatting or the ability to search through past entries.

5. 750 Words

Finally, we have 750 Words. 750 Words is a relatively simple web service which follows a simple principle. Every day you write 750 words. It doesn’t matter what about, as long as you write them out in full.

Related: How to Use Google Calendar as a Personal Journal

The website itself can be accessed from anywhere as long as you have access to the internet, and tracks an impressive amount of information about what you’ve written every day.

Stats such as just how many words you wrote, how quickly it took you to get there, how many breaks you took and more are all included.

If you’re looking for something introspective, then 750 Words might be able to help with that as well. The web service also analyzes your feelings, themes, and the mindset of what you’re saying to help you see what you’re thinking about as you write.

But Journaling Can Be Difficult

Hopefully, in this list, you’ve found something that you can use to finally replace that old journal and pen. If not, maybe you’ve managed to find a way in which you can supplement it.

Regardless of how you journal, being consistent with your journaling can be difficult even at the best of times.

About the authors

Carma spence.

I help entrepreneurs, small business owners, and mid-level executives unleash their content creation superpowers and communicate their message with confidence so they can create a meaningful and fulfilling legacy. I do this primarily through helping them write and market their non-fiction book based on the knowledge between their ears even if they've never written before and are crazy busy.

An international best-selling author, award-winning editor and speaker, with more than 20 years' experience in marketing, public relations, and science communication, Carma is a multi-dimensional entrepreneur, science fiction writer, and poet.

After earning a master’s degree from the University of Maryland College Park in Journalism (from the number one public relations program in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report), Carma developed a career as a corporate science writer. Her ability to understand high-level science (she holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology) and translate it for a lay audience, coupled with her marketing and public relations training, enabled her to help employers such as City of Hope National Medical Center, Blue Shield of California and the National Human Genome Research Institute gain local and national exposure, and improve customer and employee communications.

Carma performed pro bono work for KRCB Public Television, the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, and the North Bay Career Resource Center. She has promoted wines from Texas, South Africa, and the elite Champagne Deutz, and helped pioneer a website for pediatric professionals.

With the increasing importance of the Internet in marketing communications, Carma developed expertise in online presence and strategy. Her books, "Home Sweet Home Page" and "57 Secrets for Branding Yourself Online" (from Logical Logical Expressions Publishing) have received positive reviews and help numerous entrepreneurs improve their online presence. She has worked with best-selling author Cynthia Kersey, fitness expert Wendy Ida and speaker/entertainer Cindy Ashton.

Carma has been a writer since she was four. Her love of travel (she grew up in East Africa), along with her passion for science fiction, propelled her to create the online travel resource for science fiction, fantasy and horror fans, The Genre Traveler. She is also working on a multi-media history and sociology of science fiction, titled Yesteryear’s Future. And, she has recently launched a science fiction film and television review video podcast with her husband, called C-Squared.

Her two cookbooks, "Bonkers for Bundt Cakes" and "Your Perfect Pie," can be found online at Amazon and BN.com.

Her latest book is "Public Speaking Super Powers," became an Amazon Kindle bestseller and was a Top 10 Finalist in the Author Academy Awards. She is also working on several other titles.

As a speaker, Carma has received several awards, including a lifetime membership to the National Forensic League. She has been a member of Toastmasters since 1989, where she earned her Distinguished Toastmaster award, the highest award Toastmasters awards recognizing accomplishments in communications and leadership.

The wind beneath her clients’ wings, Carma's superpower is to help her clients see what is possible for them and guide them on the journey from where they are to where they want to be, Vanquishing the Mind Goblins of self-doubt, self-sabotage and second-guessing that keep them stuck.

Ursula E Nieuwoudt

Ursula E Nieuwoudt

I love life. Had to decide: be afraid of it, just because it might kill me? Ha, that ship has obviously sailed, grin. It’s a question of not if, but when. Young or old.

No no, keep going, get up and never give up. And on the way down, meet others there and try to take them with me on the way up again. It is a rollercoaster. Take it on the chin, eyes front and centre, and ever onwards. Leave the past, don’t look back, except to learn from it. That was where the first book, “About Fitting In” came from.

What a surprise it was, therefore, to find how interesting the past actually is. Other people’s, you understand 😊 I have worked for uranium and diamond mines, and grew up in a copper mine town. Mining gal, that’s me. My current book is about diamonds and their stories. And what stories they tell, goodness, beyond compare.

It is a huge honour to be featured in various books of Viki Winterton. With deep respect, rest in peace, Viki.

Writing is fun, challenging and very hard work. But ironically that is the fun part of it!

I am lucky enough to have two homes, Namibia and South Africa, both of which are worlds in one country, extreme, singular, spectacular and special.

Wishing you a life of light and laughter with less vinegar, more honey.

Lynn Herkes

Lynn Herkes

Lynn Herkes was born and grew up in San Diego, California in 1964. Lynn was always an avid animal lover and at the age of 12 started working at a local stable in exchange for riding lessons. She attended San Diego Mesa College and then the University of Southern California and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Immediately after graduation, Lynn re-started her equestrian endeavors and began dressage-training business along with a career in aerospace engineering. After 16 years of long hours and a ton of fun, Lynn decided to retire to Hawaii and start a career as a scuba diving instructor as well as continuing her dressage business part time. Lynn met her husband, Robert Herkes, in Kauai after deciding to end her scuba instructor career and switching to marketing at the hotel in which they both worked. Together, they moved to the Big Island of Hawaii, purchased a house, and adopted three dogs. Lynn continued her education achieving two master’s degrees in Business Management and Project Management, while her husband was promoted to Front Office Night Manager, and worked nights while Lynn worked days. Lynn also founded WOWSuccessTeam and organized a successful TEDxKamuela event in 2014. Together, they decided that they needed to make a change to enjoy life and follow their passions of exploring, traveling, and sharing their adventures with like-minded retirees. The couple decided to share the antics of their very curious pug, Niele, with the world after 5 years of his compassionate and comical nature endearing him to every child, adult, and animal he met along their travels. In 2018, Lynn founded and created "We Got Up And Went" blog/vlog and online travel concierge and well as co-authoring the best selling international book "My Journey My Journal".

Robert Herkes is a retired Hawai’i hotelier and restaurateur. Bob enjoyed much of his career opening and managing in hotels from Hawai’i to the Marshall Islands and Bora Bora, finishing with a luxury hotel on his home island of Hawai’i. Bob also served in the US Navy as a Quartermaster, navigating on three West Pacific tours from San Diego throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Bob has had an active outdoor lifestyle, from Scuba Diving certification at the age of 15, to hunting and outrigger canoe paddling for several clubs on Kaua’i and Hawai’i with a number of ribbons and trophies to his credit. An avid photographer, Bob has captured images of Hawai’i and the places he has visited during his life, including some experience as a teaching assistant while he attended college. It was during Bob’s time managing at a resort on Kaua’i that he met the love of his life and they moved to the Big Island of Hawai’i. In his usual fashion, Bob talked Lynn into marriage, then buying a house, taking a new job and going on a fantasy honeymoon exploring South America all in two months. Bob’s family had owned a fawn pug named Kamuela, and when the opportunity arose, Bob talked his wife Lynn into adding a young black pug named Niele to the family. Niele’s curious nature provided many opportunities for Bob to photograph and capture moments of Niele’s adventures as he has grown in his young life. These images help give life to Lynn’s descriptions and narration of the adventures of Niele the Curious Pug.

The 13 Best Digital Journal Apps for 2024

my journey journal

For years I've tried to keep a journal for my life and work. I've purchased several paper journals . Despite these attempts, I never established a habit of regular journaling, especially for work .

But it didn't stick. Some days I'd forget to bring it with me, other days I'd get too busy to spend the time to write. I recognized the importance of regular reflection & planning, but I couldn't always get it to work for me.

Then I tried a digital journal .

The app was simple - every day (or week), I'd receive a notification in my email inbox encouraging me to reply.

I'd add a response over email. It was super simple to use, and the habit stuck!

This made me realize that digital journals have massive benefits , especially if you need help establishing the habit.

In the rest of this post, I'm going to share a list of the best digital journals or journaling apps that you can use to kickstart a regular habit of reflection & planning.

ClickUp is a powerful productivity platform designed to manage everything—tasks, goals, ideas, roadmaps, notes, and even your entire workflow, all on a single screen. Whether you're new to bullet journaling or simply looking for a reliable app to reflect on your personal growth, ClickUp is packed with hundreds of intuitive features to enhance your creativity in and outside of work.

Maintaining the practice of regular journaling can be difficult without the proper tools to hold yourself accountable, and ClickUp's unique organizational Hierarchy is ideal for cultivating that healthy habit. When it comes to bullet journaling, ClickUp's private Lists, tasks, subtasks, and Checklists can break down any idea into a clear structure, while Custom Statuses and its Goals feature help you track your progress every step of the way.

ClickUp Docs are connected directly to your Workspace so you can easily open, update, and capture ideas at any time. 2. The Five Minute Journal App

The  Five Minute Journal app  is based off the bestselling physical journal. In the morning you receive specific prompts on your iPhone/iPad or Android such as:

  • I am grateful for...
  • What will I do to make today great?

Then in the evening, you can answer questions like:

  • 3 amazing things that happened today
  • How could I have made today even better?

my journey journal

Additionally, you can add a photo to your post and you'll receive a daily quote that you can share on social media . This is an effective structure and covers the key aspects of journaling. It's ideal for beginners who are trying to build a regular habit of journaling, but if you're looking to customize entries, prompts, and the cadence; you may need to  look elsewhere .

The app has close to a 5-star review (over 10,000 reviews) on the  Google Play store  and  iTunes .

Cost:  $4.99

Day One  is a personal journaling app that is available across the entire iOS ecosystem (including iPads and a Mac app) and Android. This app is much more free-form than structured apps like  Friday  or the Five Minute Journal; it's a bit more like an open-ended digital diary.

There's quite a few useful features you may like in Day One:

  • Advanced Encryption/Security
  • Various integrations (it will pull in your posts from other systems, available on the Premium version)
  • Location tagging
  • Markdown formatting
  • Export/backup options

You can see more in this video review below:

The only downside to Day One is that it's open-ended, so you will need to come up with your own journaling prompts . For beginners, staring at an empty page can be intimidating.

Cost:  $35/year

Next up, we have  Penzu , one of the earliest digital journaling apps available ( founded in 2008 !). Penzu is very similar to Day One, as it's more of a freeform diary app vs. being a structured journal. It boasts more than 2 million users.

Penzu offers a free version, and two paid offerings. The free plan offers unlimited entries, access to mobile apps, and basic font options. Yes, the reminders are included in the free plan.

Unfortunately, the app seems to have lost a bit of its luster over the past couple of years - it looks like only one founder is still working on the project (see  LinkedIn company  page). The app currently has a 4.3 star rating on the  iTunes store  and 4.3 stars on the  Play store .

my journey journal

The paid offerings have features like:

  • Various Journal Covers
  • Different Background colors
  • Custom reminders

Cost:  $19-$49/year

Friday might be an interesting  alternative  worth considering.

5. Dabble.me

As I mentioned in the beginning of the article, I used to use  Ohlife  before it shut down.  Dabble.me  is the closest alternative I've found to the  email-based journaling method . As I mentioned before, this app delivers an email on a regular interval. All you need to do is reply via email. You can see in the screenshot below, it will also show a past update:

my journey journal

If you live in your email inbox, this is worth a second look. The free plan offers restricted functionality, like the email notifications are sent every other week.

The paid offering unlocks the following features, such as:

  • Ability to change the frequency
  • Attach a photo
  • Edit entries
  • Rich text formatting
  • Year in Review

If you are looking for a simple way to start journaling, Dabble.me is worth a look, or you could consider  an alternative .

Cost:  $36/year

Daybook  is another journaling app similar to Day One or Penzu. The user experience is extremely minimal (see example below), but it bills itself as a free cloud-based journaling app.

my journey journal

One major benefit is that the app is free. It has over 16,000 reviews on the  Google Play store  as well, with close to a 5-star rating. There's an  iOS app  as well.

Cost:  Free

7. Journey.cloud

Journey  is the new kid on the block and appears to be  the most popular regular journaling app in this list , with over 65,000 reviews on the  Google Play store  and nearly 2,000 reviews on  iTunes . Once again, it's pretty similar to Penzu and Day One, but it looks like Journey is a newer, more up-to-date version work exploring.

Similar to other apps, the free plan offers basic journaling capabilities, but you will need to upgrade to access advanced functionality like:

  • Unlimited entries
  • Create an entry from email
  • Pull in social media posts from Zapier

my journey journal

This pricing isn't obvious from their website, which is a little disappointing and a bit sketchy. With that being said, they seem to have many happy users.

P.S. - if you're looking for an  alternative to Journey.cloud , we might be able to help.

Cost:  $30/year

Ok, here's an interesting pick.  Daylio : a "micro diary and mood tracker." I've been using it for a couple weeks and have found it to be an interesting alternative to the traditional journaling apps.

Unlike traditional journaling apps, you are prompted to journal with "labels" and short snippets of text vs. being a pure "writing" app . You also share your general mood/sentiment on a regular basis.

This breaks down the barriers to journaling because it's  so easy to use . This app boasts a crazy number of reviews on the  Google play  store - over 250k! Additionally, the iOS app has over  20k reviews .

The free plan restricts certain feature and is ad-supported. The premium plan offers the following functionality:

  • Unlimited moods
  • Unlimited reminders
  • Unlimited goals
  • Ability to export entries
  • Automatic backups
  • Various themes

Overall, I really like the approach Daylio is taking, especially for people who are looking for a new digital journal app. With that being said, I think there is immense power to spending some time writing things down in a structured way. Sentiment tracking is only one piece of the puzzle.

9. 750 Words

This is called  750 Words  and it's based on  morning pages  from the book,  The Artist's Way . The general theme is that you should write in a stream of consciousness. The process can be  therapeutic . 750 words will keep track of your word count , sentiment, and how frequently you write, which can be helpful to know.

You can see a bit more of the user experience from this video:

If you are a writer or someone who wants to write more often (like me), you should check this out. If you are a beginner, this habit takes quite a bit of effort to stick.

Cost:  $60/year

10. GoodNotes

If you're a visual thinker and you need more than a text-only journaling system, take a look at  GoodNotes . A stand-out feature to GoodNotes is how flexible it is. You can quickly take notes with shapes, different highlight colors, and even in your handwriting. Customize the flow of the pen.

Create shapes, move them, stretch them.

Even add photos to your day's events.

It works as a Mac app, on your iPhone, or iPad.

Others use it like a  digital bullet journal system , and its flexibility makes it easy to do so. Because of its wide-open format and design, it positions itself both as an Evernote alternative and a digital journaling app.

It's simple to do both, especially with their Notebook feature, which is essentially a filing system. There are different canvasses, including a blank page or grid-style. Can more than 4.8 stars with 17,000+ reviews be wrong?

Cost: $7.99

11. Momento

Momento is an app where you can capture everything that you do in your life. It’s a multi-purpose private journal that can benefit you as a personal life journal, a work journal for keeping track of your tasks, and much more. Memento has many different templates that you can choose from, depending on what you want to journal.

This app is available for all iOS devices on the App Store and was even awarded App of the Year Runner Up in 2011.

my journey journal

Some cool features Momento has includes:

  • Add details to your journal entries like specific people and locations to look back on
  • Incorporate photos and videos in your entries to bring it to life
  • Sync Momento with your social media apps, so you can import different photos and videos directly
  • Search feature

Overall, Momento is a great app to “capture everything in the moment”. Due to its ability to sync with your social media, you’ll be able to bring in all your different activities and updates all in one app.

Cost : Free for basic version, Premium monthly subscription is $2.49

12. Grid Diary

Grid Diary is a combination of keeping a diary while also incorporating planner features to help keep you on track when writing about your day. You have many different prompts you can choose from to help guide you through your journaling process. Spend less time worrying about what to write, and spend more time getting into the habit of reflection and insight.

my journey journal

Grid Diary includes the following features, such as:

  • Add a password to keep personal entries private
  • Different journal templates to direct you
  • Sync your data across devices
  • Export your diary in multiple formats
  • Dark and Light mode depending on preference

Diaro is a journaling/diary app that allows you to organize your entries in ways that make sense for you. You can organize them by date, add tags to the entries, set a location, and even place them in different folders.

my journey journal

Some great features Diaro includes are:

  • Translated in over 30 languages for accessibility
  • Sync Diaro online and Diaro on mobile devices

Cost: Free, $2.99-9.99/month/per item

What Makes a Great Journal App?

When looking for a digital journal application, here are some features you may want to consider:

User-friendly interface : Look for an application with a clean and intuitive interface that makes it easy to create and organize entries.

Security : A digital journal can contain personal information that you may not want others to see. Therefore, make sure the application has appropriate security measures, such as password protection or encryption.

Customization : The ability to customize your journal entries can make them more enjoyable to create and review. Look for an application that allows you to choose from different fonts, colors, and backgrounds.

Search and tag functions : Being able to search for and tag entries can make it easier to find specific information or themes in your journal.

Integration with other applications : If you're looking for a journal app to help you with project management, you may want to consider a tool with multiple integration capabilities.

Online sync and backup: Check if your digital journal app offers a way to back up and export your journal entries which can be accessed from multiple devices

Some digital journal applications offer additional features, such as the ability to add photos, and voice memos, or integrate with other apps. Consider other additional features that you may need.

Conclusion: Which Digital Journal App Will You Choose?

In conclusion, there are a ton of various journal apps to choose from. We recommend focusing on establishing the habit first - the various features won't make a huge difference if you don't make journaling a regular habit.

That's why you should try ClickUp ( get started for free ). It is the only fully customizable tool available, which means that you can mold the software to fit your needs instead of trying to create new behaviors that confirm how the app functions.

And a whole lotta love...

truly the best app for journaling, it's simple, effective, and well-organised. aesthetically pleasing. truly helpful for someone who likes journaling.

Better than the best journaling app. The interface keeps it distraction-free and makes me look forward to entering my journal entry. The prompts are thought-provoking and helps me reflect deeply. I use the prompts as conversation starters too.

As a mental health therapist I’m always looking for new tools to help clients process their experience. I try each tool myself before recommending to anyone and this is by far my favorite so far. I like that it is web based as well. It’s easy to use and has fantastic prompts to help folks begin the writing process. I highly recommend this app for anyone looking to use writing as a tool to reflect or process their thoughts and experiences. Truly well done.

I love this app. Journaling is really important to my mental health, and using Reflection has really helped me to be more mindful and consistent. It has changed the game for me.

Just want to say this app is so refreshingly Simple but effective and behind the scenes, has the most amazing, giant-hearted people who care more about helping people And not fixated on profiting every chance possible. I am beyond impressed and blessed. Thx guys!

Exactly what I was looking for in a journaling app! I use the journal prompts daily. Love that I can use it for my gratitude journaling but also can use the guides for deeper reflection. Generous free offering, and the premium is a great value. Bonus: The support team is quick and friendly!

I find myself being able to journal almost every day now with the app. I am 50 years old I am set in my ways I love the smell of paper and I love the way the pen flows and I love to see the ink marks on my hand. But in this busy world that we are in I don’t get time to fully write what I want to write whereas this way I’m actually not even writing when I’m journaling I get to talk and express my thoughts through words with the app. The guides that they offer wonderful for when you just wanna journal about something the insides are amazing the membership is invaluable and the community of people are just amazing people get the app become a part of the community you will not regret it.

I use this and recommend it to my clients. In combination with voice dictation it’s the most effective way to get my thoughts down.

Spent the last couple of days checking out a lot of journaling aps. Yours is the first that works easily across interfaces- Iphone, chrome book, and work computer. I am so pleased. I have wanted to journal for a while but it seems like my paper journal is always in the wrong place. Now I will always have my journal within reach. ❤️❤️

I rarely leave reviews, mainly because not all applications are life-changing, but this one definitely is life-changing and worthy of one. The app's mechanism allows you type out all of your thoughts and feelings in a very clean, blank screen that is quite peaceful, conducive for reflection, and not hurtful to the eyes (as it is in, well, plain back). The default font style is not heavy on the eyes to read, and it seems rather fancy when I first encountered and used this app (great job on this by the way). This usually prompts me to leave more comprehensive details on my experiences, which are essential for more effective personal reflections. Furthermore, after having typed down your reflection for a certain day, a monthly review will be made available to you after, well, a month. This allows you to have a greater view of what had happened in the past, and how you may have changed your attitude or tune about your past experience. In short: it is a FANTASTIC reflection application. I fell in love with this application the first time I used this, and will continue to do so until the end of my journey in medical school. Kudos to all behind this application!

Incredible app. They helped me get started on my journaling journey, taking it as a habit. It has guides and daily prompts which can be food for thought to write about when the day ends. I love the app

Reflection app is astonishing.

I absolutely love it.  I can't explain the benefits it has to really opening a person up their inner existence.

I’m a believer.  I was not great at journaling, but this app has made it so simple and actually enjoyable.

The minimalist experience I was looking for!  …the Reflection.app mobile app and desktop app are well designed and get out of your way so that can quickly reflect on your day.

This is a powerful tool to help you truly connect with yourself,  and decide what you want and need out of your life!

I like the guided programs a lot, they are a good way to jump in to journaling if you don't know where to start…this app has made it easier to make journaling an enjoyable habit!

I look forward to journaling everyday.  This takes personal reflection and gives it contextual meaning. Love it!!!

I started using Reflection recently, thinking journaling would help me to cope with a divorce. I have been surprised at how much it has helped. I do know things about myself, but the knowledge is stored in the junk drawer of my mind, making it hard to find useful insight in the chaos and disorganization. Writing it out is sort of like Marie Kondo-ing my brain, not so much to discard the parts that don’t bring joy, but to order it in such a way that it is comprehensible. There actually are insights in there for the finding, but also insights that present themselves in the process of creating a narrative. Thanks for your help with my journey.

I have been journaling for years but needed to find a new app, i came across this and it was perfect! The design interface is beautiful and seamless, I feel at peace even i go into this app. Amazing features for free, like tags for your entry, a prompted monthly review summary. It has light and dark mode and you can book mark entries. Highly recommend!!

Wonderful opportunity to focus on the good. I love the thoughtful prompts that illicit deep reflection. This app offers a wide variety of topics and provides guides as well. Notifications are available to support consistent practice. Highly recommend.

Used the application for awhile and the experience is overall very pleasant. Simple and easy to use ui, great template settings. Very ideal for some shadow work and as the name suggested, reflection.

I am relatively new to journaling and never know what to write. It’s one of the reasons I’ve never journaled before this or never stuck to it. I like that this app has prompts to give you ideas of what to write about and asks questions. I also like the guides. A topic or theme over several days that gives you a question/prompt to answer every day of the guide. Great way to inspire you to journal and keep up with it daily.

I’ve been using this app for 7 days now and I’m still going strong, enjoying journaling everyday. I tried other journaling apps before they had all the bells and whistle’s but did not make me stick to it. I like the minimalist look and feel of the app, and I specially like the guides, these inspired me and motivated me to keep journaling everyday.

Great journaling app. I've been using it for years, and it really helps me track my mood and recall how I think and feel in different situations. I often read important entries to my psychiatrist that I wouldn't have otherwise remembered. The guided courses are cool too, and I love that there's a different thought-provoking quote every day. Really just a great tool.

After a lot of apps, tries and methods I think I found exactly what I need. 🙌🏻 Not too much stuff everywhere, just clean and simple. Perhaps a french translation could be nice. Bravo !

I love this journal because they provide daily motivational quotes and prompts when I'm not sure what to write about….Their customer service is also really nice and accommodating. they helped me with my Reflection app premium subscription without any hassle. It's overall a great app that I love using on my desktop or mobile. I can get my thoughts out and reduce my use of Twitter…

...and I've tried many. Reflection is a simple tool with all the features I need, but without the extra clutter. If you are looking for a solution that has all the essentials in a beautiful design, look no further. I've been using it daily to jot down my thoughts during the day, and when I feel like it, I dive deeper with the Guides or Journal Prompts. I especially like the intiutive design and insights. I'm very picky about which apps I use - thanks you for creating such a good tool for mindful journaling. 💛

A wonderful app and gentle prompts to motivate you to incorporate quiet reflection and thought each day. Making this action a part of our increasingly over busy days is a healthy step to creating and maintaining a calm, disciplined balance to the overtly noisy demands and pollutants of modern life. A brilliant little practice and app!

This is a wonderful app. It’s helped me enjoy daily and twice daily journaling that is focussed around an idea, an inspirational sentence or something else. I felt an increased closeness to and appreciation for myself as a result. I recommend it.

Love this app! It is really helping me to learn who I am find my way because I'm a lost soul helping me deal with my childhood abuse because I basically ran from it now I'm dealing with it. It helps to teach you to understand a lot of things so I highly recommend the premiums in this app

No bs, no too much add-ons, and the premium is very fairly priced. Good privacy. Thanks a lot. You help my mental health a lot.

What I needed was to be prompted to discuss gratefulness. Sometimes you don't realize how vast the topic is, so you write nothing! This tool overcomes that challenge and compiles your thoughts for reflection

I need this app to remind me where I have been and hope to get where I need to be! Truly thankful.

Journaling apps are a little congested these days. Reflection is different. It has a beautiful UI that makes me WANT to open it up. The layout and the themes are awesome, and clean. I’m personally making it my manifestation journal, and writing down all that is to be. I just downloaded this app today and am very pleased. I plan to purchase the premium to get the full experience, however there is more than enough for free to keep you going. There’s also a section of workspaces and articles to help with personal development. I recommend downloading it and seeing for yourself.

It’s great to have a daily nudge to not only take a minute to reflect, but to reflect on JOY!  Even a seemingly small thing - a neighbor’s wave, a child’s giggle, the perfect piece of pie, or that holiday update letter someone took the time to write- makes the day better.

I don’t utilize the app nearly enough, but it’s always been a positive result when I have used it.

Next best thing to a physical Journal and therapist

I love how clutter-free this app is. It's pushy enough to make me want to do the work, but gentle enough that I feel like I'm in control.

I’ve always struggled with maintaining a journaling habit until I discovered Reflection.app. The seamless integration of journal prompts and gratitude exercises has made journaling a joy rather than a chore. It’s like having a personal diary and life coach rolled into one convenient app. Kudos to the team behind this phenomenal tool!

This is the best gratitude journal app ever. It's by far my favorite! I love the prompts and how it inspires me to write again!

The thought of writing with a black canvas was very daunting and, honestly quite weird to me until I realized there was such a thing as "prompted journaling" and found the Reflection.app in my research of a good prompted journal to use. I love that it is available across multiple devices, so I can journal when I have a thought while I'm on the move, or when I'm seated in front of my desktop... or even in bed on my iPad. I also love the prompts that I can choose from. I now feel like I have a good way to self-regulate before I can get my thoughts and feelings out through words and make sense of them... or just let them out. Thank you, Reflection.app!

Get clarity and peace of mind, wherever you are.

Use Apple Shortcuts to Build the Ultimate Daily Digital Journal

Apple Shortcuts app shown on an iPhone

I started journaling in 2019. It's not that I love keeping a journal , exactly. It's more that I find my brain works better if I spend a little time dumping its contents onto paper every morning. This practice got me through 2020, an extremely difficult year, and I've kept it up ever since.

My journal isn't advanced. I've got a few sections recommended by my therapist from around the time I started—there's a section I fill in every day with things I'm looking forward to, for example. I use another section to think through what I'm going to eat and other things I'm going to do that day. All of this is straightforward; I just use a template that includes headers for those things.

But there's a bit of information I like to gather and include. Each day's weather, for example. I've noticed that I'm often in a bad mood on rainy, gray days, so recording the weather along with my thoughts gives me some helpful context when I'm reviewing entries later. I also like to know what time I wrote my entry, where I was when I wrote it, and—if possible—include a quote of the day or something else to reflect on.

I could gather all of the above information myself manually, every morning. But I've found it's a lot faster to use Apple Shortcuts for the job. This application, which comes preinstalled on every Mac, iPhone, and iPad, can automatically pull in all kinds of information and format it nicely for my journal. I run a custom automation every morning. Here's how I built it.

The Date, Weather, and Location

Screenshot of Apple Shortcuts

Fire up Apple Shortcuts on your device of choice and make a new shortcut. This software can be a little confusing, but don't worry, I'm going to talk you through everything. In the right column you will see a number of different tiny automations you can run. Drag as many of these as you want to the main column, which is on the left. I like to search for what I'm looking for, but if you prefer, you can manually explore the options to get a sense of what Shortcuts can do.

What Is 5G Home Internet? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Begin by pulling in a few simple things: the current date, the current location, and the current weather. Search for all of these items in the right panel and drag them to the left.

We now have an automation that will, every time you run it, collect the date, location, and weather. We're just getting started.

Quote of the Day (or Other RSS Feeds)

Screenshot of Apple Shortcuts

I mentioned before how I like to have a daily quote or piece of scripture in my journal. For one, it's nice to just have an inspirational or funny quote to read. But the quoted material can also serve as a prompt—something to respond to in writing when I can't think of anything to say. I use Apple Shortcuts to pull this in as well. To add this to your journal, drag Get items from RSS feed over to your shortcut.

Now you can add any RSS feed. I use Brainyquote to get daily quotes, but there are all kinds of RSS feeds out there that could work well. I found one for daily Bible quotes , for example, or you could pull in one of WIRED's RSS feeds , if you wanted extremely relevant technology news headlines in your journal. (I don't.)

Bring It Together

Screenshot of Apple Shortcuts

So now we've got a shortcut that pulls in all of this information. What can we do with it? We can bring it all together in a Text field. Add one to your automation then right-click in the text box. Use the Insert Variable option to insert information pulled in from the previous steps.

Screenshot of Apple Shortcuts

This will add any of the data, quotes, or other material you've gathered in the previous steps to the text field of your journal. You can get more specific by clicking on each data object.

Tweaking these details allows you to choose which bits of information, specifically, you want to show up as text.

Screenshot of Apple Shortcuts

Now you can organize things however you like. Add all of the relevant information you want, feeling free to write plain text between all of the slots where the automated information feeds show up. I like to use Markdown to add a little bit of formatting. When you're done, add a Copy to clipboard step that pulls in the text field you just filled out.

Click the Play button at the top to make sure everything works. Now you can run this shortcut at any time to pull in all the information you decided to include and copy it to your clipboard. Once it's on your clipboard, you can just paste it into whatever application you like to use to journal.

I have written before about how I use the notetaking tool Obsidian to manage the work I do in my freelance writing career. Obsidian is also how I manage my journal; I use that application's "Daily Note" feature to craft each day's entries. The beauty of this setup is that you can use any application you like, including Apple's Journal app . Just run the shortcut and paste what comes out.

And I am, of course, just scratching the surface of what shortcuts can do. You could pull in all of your calendar appointments for the day, for example, or all of your to-do list items. You can scroll through everything offered in the right panel of Apple Shortcuts to get more ideas.

Building this automated data-gathering tool is a great way to get started on using Apple Shortcuts while also making it just a little bit easier to start a daily journaling habit.

Local News | Mercy Health – Lorain names new Community Health director

Marilyn Alejandro-Rodriguez (Submitted)

Marilyn Alejandro-Rodriguez has been named the new Community Health director for Mercy Health — Lorain, effective April 8, according to a news release.

Alejandro-Rodriguez will lead initiatives to promote community collaborations that will help address the unique health needs of the Lorain community, the release said.

“My journey in community health began after experiencing the loss of both my parents to AIDS, which propelled me to become a community health worker,” she said in the release. “With over 30 years of experience in this field and having started my career in the face of such adversity, I’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of access to quality health care and support systems.

“Beyond offering resources, I’ve found solace and strength in the power of prayer, and I’m grateful to work in an organization that embraces and celebrates faith.”

Alejandro-Rodriguez joins Mercy Health after a tenure as the inaugural director for the Cleveland Clinic Center for Community Health Workers, a position in which she has a proven track record of connecting with underserved populations and advocating for their needs, the release said.

“Marilyn has a wealth of experience and that, teamed with her passion for service, is sure to benefit our ministry and the communities we serve,” said John Luellen, MD, market president of Mercy Health — Lorain and Youngstown in the release. “We very much look forward to working with her and seeing the positive impacts she will bring.”

One of Alejandro-Rodriguez’s first projects will be the health system’s upcoming Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) which kicks off in May, according to the release.

Taken every three years to identify the top health concerns in Lorain County, the survey uses community input to help set and establish priorities to address care gaps and provide local health resources with the goal of positively impacting the health and wellbeing of people living in the area, the release said.

The top focus areas identified in the latest assessment for Lorain County included chronic disease, mother and child care, mental health, substance abuse, cancer and social bias, according to the release.

Mercy Health — Lorain already is working to address some of these issues through various community health programs, the release said.

For instance, the Mercy Health Family Outreach Department cared for 173 pregnant women and their 137 newly born infants in 2023, and has impacted more than 5,000 lives over its 29-year history of providing services to the community, according to the release.

Additionally, the Mercy Health Faith-Based Community Nursing (parish nursing) has continued a long-standing partnership with 86 churches and congregations, connecting nearly 13,000 people with health care testing and education, the release said.

“Fostering collaboration and synergy, I aim to maximize our impact on the well-being of the communities we serve,” Alejandro-Rodriguez said. “What excites me most is the opportunity to directly serve people and families, making a tangible difference in their lives.”

Alejandro-Rodriguez also is a mother of three adult children and she has two dogs.

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament
  • Athletic Injuries

During a basketball game, I was hit on the inside of my left knee by an offensive player, resulting in an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and a dislocation of my patella. To recover as quickly as possible, I went to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University for an arthroscopic ACL reconstruction surgery. After going through months of rehabilitation, my knee was finally back to a level that allowed me to resume all my activities. As an ordinary person from a small town, this experience deeply made me appreciate the nobility and sanctity of medicine. Since then, I have been determined to become a doctor. Through hard work and dedication, I have successfully enrolled in the Jiangxi Medical College at Nanchang University.

Initial healthcare pathway

After the injury, I was swiftly transported to the local county hospital. Given my young age, the physician recommended a non-surgical treatment approach, encompassing functional knee bracing and activity modification. 1 However, after 2 weeks of this treatment, my symptoms worsened. For effective treatment, my mother took me to a major city hospital. There, a thorough examination, including an MRI, 2 identified both an ACL injury and patellar dislocation. Immediate ACL reconstruction was recommended, but the invasive nature of the surgery gave us pause. Considering my age and concerns about the surgical scar impacting my appearance and prognosis, 3 the doctor advised seeking minimally invasive surgery (surgery to minimise patient injury through very small incisions and specialised instruments) at a provincial tertiary hospital.

ACL surgery

After careful consideration, we decided to undergo this less invasive arthroscopic procedure. As I was transported to the operating room on a transfer bed, it was my first surgical experience, and I was engulfed by a mixture of fear and anxiety. Dr Hao reassured me with a comforting gesture and words, ‘It’s okay, don't be nervous’. The anaesthesiologist then administered the anaesthesia, and the operation began.

On awakening, I found Dr Hao already standing before me. He explained, ‘ACL reconstruction is just the beginning of treatment, not the end’. Responding, I expressed my fervent desire to return to the basketball court, to run and play sports again. Dr Hao advised gently, ‘Ensure to stay active and employ scientific rehabilitation methods. With active and scientific approaches, your recovery will be swift, allowing you to resume your normal life’.

Postsurgical rehabilitation

On the third day postoperation, I was successfully discharged from the hospital, yet the journey of postoperative rehabilitation lay ahead. By researching and following the doctor’s advice, I devised a scientific rehabilitation plan for myself. Throughout this journey, I gained a profound appreciation for the medical profession, which further deepened my interest in medicine.

Early rehab phase (1–2 weeks after surgery):

I worked on quadriceps exercises to prevent muscle atrophy. Usually, I would lie in bed and try to contract my quadriceps. It was not an easy process for me; I often feel pain.

I also practised patellar mobilisation on my doctor’s advice to prevent knee joint adhesions. I would lie down with my knee straight. Then, I gently massaged around the kneecap with my fingers to relax the muscles and tissues. Next, I'd gently hold the patella and move it up, down, left and right. My family had received a detailed demonstration from my doctor beforehand, so I rarely experienced discomfort during this exercise.

Intermediate rehab phase (2–6 weeks after surgery):

I engaged in joint range of motion exercises. It started with passive exercises, where I gently flexed and extended my knee using my hands, which was quite easy. However, what followed was painful and lengthy active exercises. During these, I had to wear a professional knee brace that helped record changes in my joint’s range of motion. Sometimes, it felt like my brain could not control my knee, and my joint range of motion would fluctuate unpredictably, even decreasing at times, which was extremely frustrating and disheartening. But with the consistent encouragement from my doctor and loved ones, I kept at it and eventually achieved good recovery results.

Late rehab phase (after 6 weeks post-surgery):

Six weeks postsurgery, my doctor removed my knee brace and noticed that the diameter of my left thigh was 3 cm smaller compared with my healthy right side. My doctor advised me to continue strengthening my quadriceps until both thighs were of equal diameter. Of course, I also had to face the subsequent long-term rehabilitation training, which required persistent determination and an optimistic mindset. After 10 months, I was completely out of rehabilitation.

During this process, I continued to appreciate the distinct allure of medicine and expressed my gratitude to my attending physician, Dr Hao. I also came to understand that for a patient, while surgery is critical, the role of scientific postsurgical rehabilitation is equally indispensable. Therefore, in my clinical work and study, I sincerely assist every patient undergoing ACL reconstruction, hoping they can recover better.

Through this injury, surgery and rehabilitation experience, medicine took root in my heart, guiding me to a career in medicine and renewing my relationship with Dr Hao, my attending physician at the time, as his student ( figure 1 ). As both a patient and a medical student, I believe there are three main reasons why I was able to return to my normal life so quickly after my ACL reconstruction:

The selection of the correct surgical approach.

Maintaining a healthy and persistent mental state during rehabilitation.

Developing a scientific rehabilitation programm. 6

The Evolving Danger of the New Bird Flu

An unusual outbreak of the disease has spread to dairy herds in multiple u.s. states..

This transcript was created using speech recognition software. While it has been reviewed by human transcribers, it may contain errors. Please review the episode audio before quoting from this transcript and email [email protected] with any questions.

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise, and this is “The Daily.”

[MUSIC PLAYING]

The outbreak of bird flu that is tearing through the nation’s poultry farms is the worst in US history. But scientists say it’s now starting to spread into places and species it’s never been before.

Today, my colleague, Emily Anthes, explains.

It’s Monday, April 22.

Emily, welcome back to the show.

Thanks for having me. Happy to be here.

So, Emily, we’ve been talking here on “The Daily” about prices of things and how they’ve gotten so high, mostly in the context of inflation episodes. And one of the items that keeps coming up is eggs. Egg prices were through the roof last year, and we learned it was related to this. Avian flu has been surging in the United States. You’ve been covering this. Tell us what’s happening.

Yes, so I have been covering this virus for the last few years. And the bird flu is absolutely tearing through poultry flocks, and that is affecting egg prices. That’s a concern for everyone, for me and for my family. But when it comes to scientists, egg prices are pretty low on their list of concerns. Because they see this bird flu virus behaving differently than previous versions have. And they’re getting nervous, in particular, about the fact that this virus is reaching places and species where it’s never been before.

OK, so bird flu, though, isn’t new. I mean I remember hearing about cases in Asia in the ‘90s. Remind us how it began.

Bird flu refers to a bunch of different viruses that are adapted to spread best in birds. Wild water birds, in particular, are known for carrying these viruses. And flu viruses are famous for also being shapeshifters. So they’re constantly swapping genes around and evolving into new strains. And as you mentioned back in the ‘90s, a new version of bird flu, a virus known as H5N1, emerged in Asia. And it has been spreading on and off around the world since then, causing periodic outbreaks.

And how are these outbreaks caused?

So wild birds are the reservoir for the virus, which means they carry it in their bodies with them around the world as they fly and travel and migrate. And most of the time, these wild birds, like ducks and geese, don’t even get very sick from this virus. But they shed it. So as they’re traveling over a poultry farm maybe, if they happen to go to the bathroom in a pond that the chickens on the farm are using or eat some of the feed that chickens on the farm are eating, they can leave the virus behind.

And the virus can get into chickens. In some cases, it causes mild illness. It’s what’s known as low pathogenic avian influenza. But sometimes the virus mutates and evolves, and it can become extremely contagious and extremely fatal in poultry.

OK, so the virus comes through wild birds, but gets into farms like this, as you’re describing. How have farms traditionally handled outbreaks, when they do happen?

Well, because this threat isn’t new, there is a pretty well-established playbook for containing outbreaks. It’s sometimes known as stamping out. And brutally, what it means is killing the birds. So the virus is so deadly in this highly pathogenic form that it’s sort of destined to kill all the birds on a farm anyway once it gets in. So the response has traditionally been to proactively depopulate or cull all the birds, so it doesn’t have a chance to spread.

So that’s pretty costly for farmers.

It is. Although the US has a program where it will reimburse farmers for their losses. And the way these reimbursements work is they will reimburse farmers only for the birds that are proactively culled, and not for those who die naturally from the virus. And the thinking behind that is it’s a way to incentivize farmers to report outbreaks early.

So, OK, lots of chickens are killed in a way to manage these outbreaks. So we know how to deal with them. But what about now? Tell me about this new strain.

So this new version of the virus, it emerged in 2020.

After the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus, authorities have now confirmed an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of influenza, a kind of bird flu.

And pretty quickly it became clear that a couple things set it apart.

A bald eagle found dead at Carvins Cove has tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu.

This virus, for whatever reason, seemed very good at infecting all sorts of wild birds that we don’t normally associate with bird flu.

[BIRD CRYING]

He was kind of stepping, and then falling over, and using its wing to right itself.

Things like eagles and condors and pelicans.

We just lost a parliament of owls in Minneapolis.

Yeah, a couple of high profile nests.

And also in the past, wild birds have not traditionally gotten very sick from this virus. And this version of the virus not only spread widely through the wild bird population, but it proved to be devastating.

The washing up along the East Coast of the country from Scotland down to Suffolk.

We were hearing about mass die-offs of seabirds in Europe by the hundreds and the thousands.

And the bodies of the dead dot the island wherever you look.

Wow. OK. So then as we know, this strain, like previous ones, makes its way from wild animals to farmed animals, namely to chickens. But it’s even more deadly.

Absolutely. And in fact, it has already caused the worst bird flu outbreak in US history. So more than 90 million birds in the US have died as a result of this virus.

90 million birds.

Yes, and I should be clear that represents two things. So some of those birds are birds who naturally got infected and died from the virus. But the vast majority of them are birds that were proactively culled. What it adds up to is, is 90 million farmed birds in the US have died since this virus emerged. And it’s not just a chicken problem. Another thing that has been weird about this virus is it has jumped into other kinds of farms. It is the first time we’ve seen a bird flu virus jump into US livestock.

And it’s now been reported on a number of dairy farms across eight US states. And that’s just something that’s totally unprecedented.

So it’s showing up at Dairy farms now. You’re saying that bird flu has now spread to cows. How did that happen?

So we don’t know exactly how cows were first infected, but most scientists’ best guess is that maybe an infected wild bird that was migrating shed the virus into some cattle feed or a pasture or a pond, and cattle picked it up. The good news is they don’t seem to get nearly as sick as chickens do. They are generally making full recoveries on their own in a couple of weeks.

OK, so no mass culling of cows?

No, that doesn’t seem to be necessary at this point. But the bad news is that it’s starting to look like we’re seeing this virus spread from cow to cow. We don’t know exactly how that’s happening yet. But anytime you see cow-to-cow or mammal-to-mammal transmission, that’s a big concern.

And why is that exactly?

Well, there are a bunch of reasons. First, it could allow the outbreak to get much bigger, much faster, which might increase the risk to the food supply. And we might also expect it to increase the risk to farm workers, people who might be in contact with these sick cows.

Right now, the likelihood that a farmer who gets this virus passes it on is pretty low. But any time you see mammal-to-mammal transmission, it increases the chance that the virus will adapt and possibly, maybe one day get good at spreading between humans. To be clear, that’s not something that there’s any evidence happening in cows right now. But the fact that there’s any cow-to-cow transmission happening at all is enough to have scientists a bit concerned.

And then if we think more expansively beyond what’s happening on farms, there’s another big danger lurking out there. And that’s what happens when this virus gets into wild animals, vast populations that we can’t control.

We’ll be right back.

So, Emily, you said that another threat was the threat of flu in wild animal populations. Clearly, of course, it’s already in wild birds. Where else has it gone?

Well, the reason it’s become such a threat is because of how widespread it’s become in wild birds. So they keep reintroducing it to wild animal populations pretty much anywhere they go. So we’ve seen the virus repeatedly pop up in all sorts of animals that you might figure would eat a wild bird, so foxes, bobcats, bears. We actually saw it in a polar bear, raccoons. So a lot of carnivores and scavengers.

The thinking is that these animals might stumble across a sick or dead bird, eat it, and contract the virus that way. But we’re also seeing it show up in some more surprising places, too. We’ve seen the virus in a bottle-nosed dolphin, of all places.

And most devastatingly, we’ve seen enormous outbreaks in other sorts of marine mammals, especially sea lions and seals.

So elephant seals, in particular in South America, were just devastated by this virus last fall. My colleague Apoorva Mandavilli and I were talking to some scientists in South America who described to us what they called a scene from hell, of walking out onto a beach in Argentina that is normally crowded with chaotic, living, breathing, breeding, elephant seals — and the beach just being covered by carcass, after carcass, after carcass.

Mostly carcasses of young newborn pups. The virus seemed to have a mortality rate of 95 percent in these elephant seal pups, and they estimated that it might have killed more than 17,000 of the pups that were born last year. So almost the entire new generation of this colony. These are scientists that have studied these seals for decades. And they said they’ve never seen anything like it before.

And why is it so far reaching, Emily? I mean, what explains these mass die-offs?

There are probably a few explanations. One is just how much virus is out there in the environment being shed by wild birds into water and onto beaches. These are also places that viruses like this haven’t been before. So it’s reaching elephant seals and sea lions in South America that have no prior immunity.

There’s also the fact that these particular species, these sea lions and seals, tend to breed in these huge colonies all crowded together on beaches. And so what that means is if a virus makes its way into the colony, it’s very conducive conditions for it to spread. And scientists think that that’s actually what’s happening now. That it’s not just that all these seals are picking up the virus from individual birds, but that they’re actually passing it to each other.

So basically, this virus is spreading to places it’s never been before, kind of virgin snow territory, where animals just don’t have the immunity against it. And once it gets into a population packed on a beach, say, of elephant seals, it’s just like a knife through butter.

Absolutely. And an even more extreme example of that is what we’re starting to see happen in Antarctica, where there’s never been a bird flu outbreak before until last fall, for the first time, this virus reached the Antarctic mainland. And we are now seeing the virus move through colonies of not only seabirds and seals, but penguin colonies, which have not been exposed to these viruses before.

And it’s too soon to say what the toll will be. But penguins also, of course, are known for breeding in these large colonies.

Probably. don’t have many immune defenses against this virus, and of course, are facing all these other environmental threats. And so there’s a lot of fear that you add on the stress of a bird flu virus, and it could just be a tipping point for penguins.

Emily, at this point, I’m kind of wondering why more people aren’t talking about this. I mean, I didn’t know any of this before having this conversation with you, and it feels pretty worrying.

Well, a lot of experts and scientists are talking about this with rising alarm and in terms that are quite stark. They’re talking about the virus spreading through wild animal populations so quickly and so ferociously that they’re calling it an ecological disaster.

But that’s a disaster that sometimes seems distant from us, both geographically, we’re talking about things that are happening maybe at the tip of Argentina or in Antarctica. And also from our concerns of our everyday lives, what’s happening in Penguins might not seem like it has a lot to do with the price of a carton of eggs at the grocery store. But I think that we should be paying a lot of attention to how this virus is moving through animal populations, how quickly it’s moving through animal populations, and the opportunities that it is giving the virus to evolve into something that poses a much bigger threat to human health.

So the way it’s spreading in wild animals, even in remote places like Antarctica, that’s important to watch, at least in part because there’s a real danger to people here.

So we know that the virus can infect humans, and that generally it’s not very good at spreading between humans. But the concern all along has been that if this virus has more opportunities to spread between mammals, it will get better at spreading between them. And that seems to be what is happening in seals and sea lions. Scientists are already seeing evidence that the virus is adapting as it passes from marine mammal to marine mammal. And that could turn it into a virus that’s also better at spreading between people.

And if somebody walks out onto a beach and touches a dead sea lion, if their dog starts playing with a sea lion carcass, you could imagine that this virus could make its way out of marine mammals and into the human population. And if it’s this mammalian adapted version of the virus that makes its way out, that could be a bigger threat to human health.

So the sheer number of hosts that this disease has, the more opportunity it has to mutate, and the more chance it has to mutate in a way that would actually be dangerous for people.

Yes, and in particular, the more mammalian hosts. So that gives the virus many more opportunities to become a specialist in mammals instead of a specialist in birds, which is what it is right now.

Right. I like that, a specialist in mammals. So what can we do to contain this virus?

Well, scientists are exploring new options. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether we should start vaccinating chickens in the US. The government, USDA labs, have been testing some poultry vaccines. It’s probably scientifically feasible. There are challenges there, both in terms of logistics — just how would you go about vaccinating billions of chickens every year. There are also trade questions. Traditionally, a lot of countries have not been willing to accept poultry products from countries that vaccinate their poultry.

And there’s concern about whether the virus might spread undetected in flocks that are vaccinated. So as we saw with COVID, the vaccine can sometimes stop you from getting sick, but it doesn’t necessarily stop infection. And so countries are worried they might unknowingly import products that are harboring the virus.

And what about among wild animals? I mean, how do you even begin to get your head around that?

Yeah, I mean, thinking about vaccinating wild animals maybe makes vaccinating all the chickens in the US look easy. There has been some discussion of limited vaccination campaigns, but that’s not feasible on a global scale. So unfortunately, the bottom line is there isn’t a good way to stop spread in wild animals. We can try to protect some vulnerable populations, but we’re not going to stop the circulation of this virus.

So, Emily, we started this conversation with a kind of curiosity that “The Daily” had about the price of eggs. And then you explained the bird flu to us. And then somehow we ended up learning about an ecological disaster that’s unfolding all around us, and potentially the source of the next human pandemic. That is pretty scary.

It is scary, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it. And I feel like I should take a step back and say none of this is inevitable. None of this is necessarily happening tomorrow. But this is why scientists are concerned and why they think it’s really important to keep a very close eye on what’s happening both on farms and off farms, as this virus spreads through all sorts of animal populations.

One thing that comes up again and again and again in my interviews with people who have been studying bird flu for decades, is how this virus never stops surprising them. And sometimes those are bad surprises, like these elephant seal die-offs, the incursions into dairy cattle. But there are some encouraging signs that have emerged recently. We’re starting to see some early evidence that some of the bird populations that survived early brushes with this virus might be developing some immunity. So that’s something that maybe could help slow the spread of this virus in animal populations.

We just don’t entirely know how this is going to play out. Flu is a very difficult, wily foe. And so that’s one reason scientists are trying to keep such a close, attentive eye on what’s happening.

Emily, thank you.

Thanks for having me.

Here’s what else you should know today.

On this vote, the yeas are 366 and the nays are 58. The bill is passed.

On Saturday, in four back-to-back votes, the House voted resoundingly to approve a long-stalled package of aid to Ukraine, Israel and other American allies, delivering a major victory to President Biden, who made aid to Ukraine one of his top priorities.

On this vote, the yeas are 385, and the no’s are 34 with one answering present. The bill is passed without objection.

The House passed the component parts of the $95 billion package, which included a bill that could result in a nationwide ban of TikTok.

On this vote, the yeas are 311 and the nays are 112. The bill is passed.

Oh, one voting present. I missed it, but thank you.

In a remarkable breach of custom, Democrats stepped in to supply the crucial votes to push the legislation past hard-line Republican opposition and bring it to the floor.

The House will be in order.

The Senate is expected to pass the legislation as early as Tuesday.
