You’ll travel with an expert guide through unspoiled landscape boasting centuries-old vineyards that have produced the famous Primitivo, Negromaro, Sussumaniello, and Aglianico e Bombino Bianco wines. This full-day excursion begins in Gioia del Colle. You’ll be taken on a tour by one of the owners of the organic vineyard, where focus is on the fantastic Primitivo wine. We will take you through the organic wine production process. Before lunch you’ll head to the ancient city of Matera, which is home to movie director Francis Ford Coppola. Matera has been the setting for a number of well-known films including Mel Gibson’s  The Last Passion of Christ . You’ll enjoy lunch at a typical restaurant in the old town and afterwards visit the famous Sassi cave dwellings. In addition, you’ll have free time to explore the city at your leisure. If your accommodation is in Bari, Ostuni, or Lecce, you may be able to arrange pick-up. You’ll travel in fully-equipped, private transport, and enjoy the service of an expert bilingual (English/Italian) tour guide. Visits to a vineyard, with wine tastings, are included. The wine tasting tour begins in the natural vineyard where the guide will show you the origin of every wine: the soil. The vines are cultivated with free espalier and the soil from which they come to life is not plowed. This allows the earth, and the micro-organisms that populate it, to live in a natural eco-system allowing it to be healthy and fertile. This type of cultivation is defined synergistic agriculture or natural farming, precisely in synergy with nature. The fertility of the soil is obtained re-building the natural eco-system , without the use of any chemistry, making agriculture a sustainable activity.

From the land to its fruit: grapes and natural wine

After having seen the vineyard, listened to its history, touched and breathed the earth will come the moment of tasting its fruits! It’s time for wine tasting !

Domenico will lead you from the vineyard to the winery showing you, along the way, the process that transforms the grapes into wine . You will enter in a cellar made of large steel and wooden barrels where the must is matured and, subsequently, kept the wine before bottling. Unlike the other cellars, the barrels, especially the wooden ones, are much larger. The reason is soon said: wood should not influence the already intense natural flavor of the good wine made from the sunny Puglia vineyards. The small barrels are in fact used when the wines are devoid of taste!

The winery offers a wide variety of wines to taste, such as the Puglia red wines from:

• Primitivo grape ;
• Negroamaro grape ;
• blends of Primitivo and Aglianico grape .

Aglianico wine is mostly known as a wine from Basilicata and actually this winery is just 30 minutes from Matera (Capital of the Basilicata region and european capital of culture 2019). We think this is a great option to visit if you are looking for the best winery close to Matera.

• ice_crush 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles one of the best day tours ever! i stayed at Bari so i organized my own transport to Matera via the bus. arrived earlier just in case, and ended up waiting for another half an hour after the scheduled time. as i didn't see other tour groups around, i was beginning to get anxious if the tour was cancelled without my knowledge. i called the local tour operator repeatedly - unfortunately as it was a Sunday; no one was answering! i also called Viator where i booked the tour from - but there wasn't much they could do but to lodge a report. i was rather upset as i came all the way from Bari and thought at the very least i should go wander around the sassi by myself. just when i was about to leave from the waiting point, a lady suddenly appeared and called my name. what a relief; she was my tour guide - and was surprised the tour operator didn't pre-empt me about the new delayed time as she was on another tour before. i was too thankful to be angry with the whole situation! the best part was, i turned out to be the only person for this tour and yet the tour guide (sorry i left her namecard but i think her name is Maria) was fantastic!!! as a local, her in-depth knowledge of the sassi was really impressive coupled with animated story-telling. happy the weather was great as it was forecasted to rain. overall, this tour is highly recommended - one of the most beautiful (in a very raw sort of way) ancient cities i've ever visited out of the many European ones. super picturesque in every angle... enjoy the pix! <3 Read more Written 16 July 2019

I visited the island that's been called the 'Hawaii of Europe.' Here's why it's a must-see hidden gem.

When I visited Madeira, Portugal , I found an island paradise brimming with natural wonders and cultural opportunities.

From outdoor adventures to trips to the enchanting Funchal city center, this Portuguese hidden gem has sparked comparisons to Hawaii due to the island's striking volcanic features, black-sand beaches, and towering peaks.

Madeira is the perfect blend of a tropical and European vacation, coupled with its yearlong mild climate, rugged coastlines, cascading waterfalls, and verdant cliffs.

With visitation at an all-time high , there's never been a better time to explore Portugal. Here are seven things you have to do while in Madeira.

Get a taste of outdoor adventure while hiking.

The view from the Pico do Arieiro mountaintop left me speechless.

You can truly appreciate Madeira's diverse landscapes from up there: jagged peaks, verdant valleys, and the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean stretching out before you.

I opted for a car ride to the top, but if you plan to hike, I recommend heading to the Vereda dos Balcões trail or the challenging but rewarding Levada do Caldeirão Verde.

When you need a break from hiking, catch a ride on the Funchal cable cars.

Located in the city center, the Funchal cable cars offer spectacular views as they ascend from Funchal to the charming village of Monte. It's perfect if you're traveling with family, including kids or elders.

Once in Monte, you can visit one of the island's main attractions, Monte Palace.

Monte Palace is the best botanical garden I’ve ever been to.

Monte Palace houses a huge collection of exotic plants from all over the world. The tropical gardens are also home to gorgeous birds like swans, flamingos, peacocks, and chickens.

From its beautiful gardens to its collection of ceramic tiles and precious gemstones, this place feels like a hidden oasis in the midst of the city.

If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, check out the Cabo Girão skywalk.

If there's something I love as much as the outdoors, it's a unique experience . So when I heard of Cabo Girão, the highest sea cliff in Europe , I knew I had to visit.

The top of the cliff features a unique glass-floored skywalk suspended over 1,900 feet above sea level. When standing on the glass, I got unmatched views of Madeira's rugged coastline and the crashing waves underneath.

When in Madeira, skip the beer and stick to its famous wine.

In addition to being the name of the name of the island, Madeira is also a type of fortified wine. Needless to say, you can't leave without visiting a vineyard to learn more about the island's winemaking heritage.

I highly recommend booking a guided tour with a tasting to see the grapes firsthand and gain insights into the intricate aging process that gives these wines unique flavors.

Take a trip to the local market.

Whenever I visit a new city or country, I like to stop at the local farmers market . In Madeira, I visited the Mercado dos Lavradores, which is located in the heart of Funchal.

It was a great opportunity to sample local delicacies while buying souvenirs from local craftsmen.

For a glimpse into everyday life, don’t skip a visit to the Camara da Lobos fishing village.

Away from the city center and less frequented by tourists , the picturesque fishing village of Camara da Lobos offers a slice of authentic island life.

Grab a poncha, a local Madeira cocktail, and admire the dozens of art murals that surround the community, all while enjoying the colorful harbor and fishermen unloading their catch of the day.
