Rome City Break - 3 Days/2 Nights

((REVIEW IS FOR VENICE CITY BREAK, WHICH WAS NOT LISTED AS AN OPTION)) I (32 year old solo male traveler from NJ, USA, attorney by trade) had the distinct pleasure of dealing with Veronica from Italy on a Budget when I travelled to Italy this past July/August 2021. She was personable, knowledgeable, above-and-beyond helpful, responsive, and was absolutely instrumental in making my Italian vacation as great as it was. Before my trip, she helped as I had to reshuffle my plans due to my changing personal calendar as well as the effect of Covid on travel, and she patiently answered all of my questions over the phone and via chat in a straightforward manner. I also had various specific requests of how I wanted my trip to be personalized (adding certain activities to the itinerary, adding a day, upgrading my hostel stay), and she was able to complete every one. While in Italy, she kept in contact with me to ensure that I was happy with the trip, and she even provided helpful tips when I independently travelled to other parts of Italy outside of my Italy on a Budget itinerary. She deserves a 12/10. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Italian Scene (Summer, 10 Days)

It was a great tour and the tour director Susan Willians made it happen. She was very informative about the whole tour. the coach driver was great and very safe at all times. the food and drinks were all great and the farm home were the best. Most of the hotels were ok. We lost power at one location but that can't be helped? The first stay at the Ergife Palace in Rome was great and then the last stay there on the 25th was bad, The rooms AC did not work, it had not refrigerator , it had a place for it, but not their?? It was not Susan's fault as did not do have the rooms assigned to us as Susan had called early to let them know our arrival. They did not do Cost Saver the right thing? It was a difference of night and day compared to the first stay. Thank you Cost Saver and Susan. Norman Smith

Rome City Break - 5 Days

This was my first tour ever and was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked it. Everything was perfect!! It was informative, fun, made lots of new friends and saw many areas of Italy. Our guide was knowledgeable, personable and funny. He explained in depth at each site then gave us plenty of time to explore on our own. I looked back at my photos and realised just how much we had seen...and learned about the culture and the history of this wonderful country. Extremely good value for money. I couldn’t have ask for more. Definitely recommend you do this one!

Italian Intermezzo (Classic, Summer, 8 Days)

The trip was more than I expected. the sites we went to were all fantastic. I was overwhelmed by the beauty and richness of the sites. Italian Intermezzo gave us a glimpse of the long history of these lands. We went to Como, Verona, Pisa, Venice, Assisi, Florence, Tuscany and Rome. There was so much to see and admire. Our tour guide was very intelligent, funny, entertaining and so knowledgeable. Bradford McEwen was also a very caring person. Our driver, Max, was a true Italian gentleman who was always happy and helpful.

A Taste of Italy: 10 Days Tour

A Taste of Italy: 10 Days

It was like speed-dating Italy As far as the “taste” goes - we had much better meals on our own just by randomly walking into restaurants on our own. The free gelato in Rome the first night was nice. The evening cocktail was good in Venice. The Napolitano pizza lunch was good as well as the lunch in wine country. The 2 dinners in the hotels were awful! The dinner at the hotel in Capri- area was excellent! The hotel in Rome & Sorrento we’re very nice. Although I’m Sorrento we’re we’re put in an Amex building and the pool & spa closed at 7pm. All the other hotels were awful.

What people love about vatican city tours.

The Best of Rome tour was the perfect snapshot of all the culturally important parts of Rome. Unfortunately, due to a late cancellation the tour company couldn't book a fully guided tour but they were able to help me book a self-guided tour and make last minute arrangements for accommodations. I would highly recommend booking with them again!

  • Relax in the company of a small group, making it easier for you to engage with our 5-star guides.

Preview the experience

Tour description, more than the sistine chapel—this skip-the-line tour shows you the best of the vatican museums..

Our Complete Vatican Tour goes beyond the ordinary to give you unrivaled insight into one of the world's most sacred sites. From the Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms to incredible ancient sculptures you may never have heard of, our route through the Vatican Museums visits all the sights you wanted to see—plus some surprises you didn’t expect.

The pièce-de-resistance, of course, is the Sistine Chapel. By the time we arrive at the crown jewel of the Vatican, your guide will have explained the stories and secrets behind the paintings—what they mean and why they’re so renowned—so you can fully appreciate every detail.

Enjoy a guided tour of St. Peter's Basilica (and skip the line!).

Located outside of the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica has its own entrance and its own rules, with limited hours for guided tours. Our Complete Vatican Tour ensures that you get inside the Basilica (and avoid the long line to get in!) with your expert guide to enjoy Michelangelo’s moving Pietà, Bernini’s ornate Baldachin, and the chair of St. Peter, among other treasures.

Explore with one of the best guides in the business on our Complete Vatican Tour.

We’ve spent years growing a team of passionate experts who want to share the Vatican with you. Combine them with a small group and you have a recipe for sightseeing perfection! We also use privileged entrances at the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica, bypassing general access lines that can stretch for hours at each site during high season.

The Complete Vatican Tour offers an uncompromising, unhurried exploration of the world’s most fascinating independent state for those who want a truly in-depth Vatican experience.

Note: The special access passage between the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica is closed on Wednesdays and subject to other unexpected closures during special celebrations/festivities, including the Easter ceremonies. On such days we will instead explore the magnificent Pinoteca Gallery.

Sometimes guides may not be allowed to give tours inside St. Peter's Basilica, in which case they will share a brief explanation from outside and you will be free to visit the Basilica by yourself.

Julieta was fantastic!

We’re not normally tour people as we like to do it ourselves but this tour was so worth it to skip so many hours of lines and our guide was fantastic. We would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Mauro was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable and kept it very interesting.

Guide was nice. She did ask questions and then mock wrong answers. Did not tip for this reason. Was good about pointing out bathrooms. Most of her information was basic but good if you have not read a lot about the area…

We loved our tour with Roberto. We only had a short period of time in Naples and wanted to take advantage of the incredible food culture while also getting a sense of the city. We tried a wide variety of local specialties and got to learn from owners/chefs. We also got to talk to Roberto about his experiences which deepened the experience. Highly recommended as an early-trip activity for anyone coming to Naples.

Our Flagship Tour of the Vatican and Vatacombs

Meet your expert guide by the Vatican Museum entrance and after brief introductions enjoy skip-the-line entry to what is arguably the most important and largest art collection in the world.

The Vatican Museums weren’t always as we know them today. For over five hundred years, celebrated Popes slowly gathered and commissioned works of art from the most talented painters, architects and sculptors in Italy and brought them to the Vatican to showcase them for their own personal enjoyment and that of a carefully chosen circle of clerics, artists, nobles, and scholars. Each new Pope sought to leave a legacy, commissioning chapels, frescoes, sculptures, libraries, paintings, courtyards – one masterpiece after another until the Papal Collection finally grew to more than 70,000 works of art spread over 1400 galleries.

In 1771 Pope Clement XIV finally opened the doors to the public, making it possible for us to enter the Holy See and walk in the footsteps of Popes and the most celebrated artists from Renaissance and Baroque Italy.

On this epic Vatican Tour you’ll walk in the footsteps of Popes and Renaissance Masters as you take in the Rooms of Raphael and of course the Sistine Chapel from its commissioning to the finishing touches by none other than Michelangelo Buonarroti. With an expert guide, learn to discern between myth, fact, and popular Hollywood fiction regarding this epic work of art.

Enjoy fast-track access to St. Peter’s Basilica to view masterpieces by Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bernini among others before descending to the Papal crypts below. We conclude on the portico with an overview of Bernini’s magnificent piazza (St. Peter’s Square), the central obelisk, and of course the Swiss Guard.

  • Stand just feet away from Michelangelo’s remarkable frescoes in the Sistine Chapel
  • Take in the beauty of the extraordinary rooms of Raphael
  • Skip all lines with priority tour operator access
  • Visit the “Vatacombs,” the eerie resting place of former Popes beneath St. Peter’s Basilica
  • Expert local guide
  • Skip-the-line tickets to the Vatican Museums
  • Room of the Muses and Belvedere Torso
  • Pinecone Courtyard
  • Octagonal Courtyard

  • St. Peter’s Basilica

  • Anticipate crowds regardless of when or how you visit, as many tours offer early entry, after-hours and/or skip-the-line access.

One of the most famous landmarks in the world, Vatican City draws more than 5 million people each year, which means that no matter when you visit, you can expect massive crowds. FAQ: Vatican City Tours

In this last section, I’ve provided some additional information surrounding Vatican City including the best day of the week to visit, what you should bring with you on a guided tour, if you need your passport, and more!

Which Vatican City Tour is Best?

Tourists should aim to go on a Vatican City tour mid-week

The Early Morning Vatican: Small Group Tour Max 6 People or Private is arguably the best tour option for those looking to have a more intimate and personalized experience. With a small group size, you’re guaranteed a level of attention and interaction with your guide that larger groups simply can’t offer.

This tour is ideal for visitors who want to explore the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica without the usual crowds pressing in. By starting early, you also enjoy the serenity of the city before most tourists are awake, making this tour a top choice for both first-time visitors and seasoned Vatican explorers alike.

Plus, with entry to the Sistine Chapel before it opens to the public, you’ll have time to soak in the stunning artwork without being jostled by crowds. You’ll also get to enjoy skip-the-line entry to the other areas, so even if they do start getting busy, you won’t have to wait!

Is It Worth Getting a Guided Tour of the Vatican?

A guided tour of the Vatican is undoubtedly a worthwhile investment ! The Vatican is not only rich with art and history, but it is also extensive and complex. A knowledgeable guide offers invaluable insight into the vast collection of art, the stories behind the frescoes, and the historical significance of each site within the city-state.

Furthermore, a guide can help navigate the labyrinthine corridors and point out details that you might miss on your own. With their expertise, you can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Vatican treasures.

And let’s not forget the practical benefits – guided tours often come with skip-the-line access, which is a huge advantage, considering the long queues that are the norm at popular attractions like St. Peter’s and the Sistine Chapel.

Can a Tourist Just Walk into Vatican City?

vatican city tours packages

While anyone can walk into the main areas of Vatican City during its opening hours, entry into the landmark sites like the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica requires official Vatican City tickets. These can be purchased directly from the Vatican Official Website for those not interested in a tour, or they are included in the price of a guided tour when you book with a local company.

The public areas that one can freely access include St. Peter’s Square and the Vatican Post Office, among a few other minor sites. However, for a more immersive experience that allows access to some of the most famous art and historical sites in the world, securing a ticket, preferably as part of a guided tour, is necessary.

Moreover, security checks similar to airport screenings are a prerequisite for entry to these attractions, so be prepared to queue for this process if traveling independently.

How Much is a Tour of the Vatican?

General admission to the Vatican Museums starts at about 20 euros for an adult ticket if purchased online from the Vatican’s official website, not including the 5 euro online booking fee.

Guided tours, on the other hand, can range from $45 for a basic group tour to upwards of $150 or more for private or semi-private tours with added perks such as early access or after-hours entry.

When considering a tour, remember that many options include added benefits like skip-the-line access and expert guidance, which can significantly enhance your visit.

What are the Top 2 Must-Sees if You Come to Vatican City?

Vatican City tours provide unparalleled opportunities to learn about art and history

When visiting Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica are the two must-see attractions that top the list . The Sistine Chapel is world-renowned for Michelangelo’s breathtaking ceiling frescoes and The Last Judgment.

St. Peter’s Basilica, on the other hand, is not only an architectural masterpiece but also an important religious site, home to significant works such as Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s Baldacchino. Both these sites encapsulate the artistic and spiritual heritage that Vatican City is famous for.

How Much Time is Enough for the Vatican?

A comprehensive visit to the Vatican typically requires at least half a day to fully appreciate the rich historical and artistic significance of its many treasures .

For those intent on a more detailed exploration, especially if attending with a guided tour, allocating a full day would allow enough time to absorb the grandeur of the museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica without rushing. That way, even when the guided portion of your exploration reaches its end, you have still allotted enough time to check out the other areas of the Vatican.

Remember, this duration includes time for security checks, potential queues, and leisurely paced walks through the extensive collections and corridors.

What is the Best Day of the Week to Visit the Vatican?

vatican city tours packages

The best day of the week to visit the Vatican is often considered to be Tuesday or Thursday . These days tend to be less crowded compared to Mondays, which can be busier due to other museums in Rome being closed, and Wednesdays, when Papal Audiences are held attracting additional visitors.

Weekends, especially Saturdays, typically see a massive influx of tourists, so it’s advisable to visit mid-week if you’re looking for a quieter experience. Additionally, being aware of the Vatican holiday calendar can help in planning your visit, as religious events and celebrations can significantly affect crowd levels and availability.

Pro Tip: please remember that if you’re visiting the Vatican in Italy’s peak summer months, it will be busy regardless of when you go. If you’re hoping for the least amount of other tourists, then an early morning Vatican tour like this one is usually going to be your best bet! Just don’t be discouraged if you don’t have a major attraction all to yourself since it’s very unlikely that will happen during the busy season.

How Long Does a Vatican Tour Take?

Most tours of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica can take anywhere between 2 to 4 hours . If you opt for a more in-depth tour that includes the Vatican Gardens or the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo, it can extend to a full-day outing of approximately 5 to 7 hours.

For an independent visit without a tour guide, you can expect to spend as much or as little time as your schedule allows, keeping in mind the Vatican’s opening hours.

What Should I Pack for Tours of the Vatican City?

vatican city tours packages

When preparing for a tour of the Vatican City, it’s important to pack accordingly to ensure you’re comfortable and respectful of the venue’s dress code. Essentials to include in your prep are:

  • Modest Clothing : Shoulders and knees must be covered, as the Vatican enforces a strict dress code in places of worship. Shorts, mini skirts, sleeveless dresses, and lowcut tops are forbidden and entry will be refused.
  • Comfortable Footwear : You’ll be walking a lot, so wearing comfortable shoes is key. Leave the heels at your hotel for this one!
  • Reusable Water Bottle : It’s essential to stay hydrated, especially in the hot summer months. There are several water fountains where you can refill your bottle which saves on single-use plastic. I always bring this LifeStraw bottle with me to Europe and I absolutely love it!
  • Snacks : a protein bar and small bag of pretzels or other light snacks can be a savior if you booked a half or full-day tour.
  • Sun Protection : If you’re visiting in the summer, sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat are advisable.
  • Small Backpack or Bag : To carry your essentials, but be aware that large backpacks may not be allowed in. Always check beforehand with your tour operator what you’ll be allowed to bring.
  • Camera (without flash) : Flash photography and selfie sticks are typically prohibited inside the museums.
  • Copy of Your Ticket : Either a printed copy or a digital version on your mobile device, to avoid any issues at the entrance.

Remember to pack light, as you might need to go through security checks, and heavy, bulky items can be an inconvenience.

Do You Need a Passport for a Vatican Tour?

While the Vatican City is indeed a sovereign state, you do not need to present a passport to enter the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, or St. Peter’s Basilica .

However, you must have a valid ticket to enter the attractions inside the Vatican. It’s important to keep your ticket with you at all times during your visit, as security may ask to see it at any point. Be sure to have a form of government identification with you, just in case, especially if your ticket is for a reduced category – such as student or senior discounts – as you may need to prove your eligibility.

It’s always best to check with your tour operator for any specific requirements before your visit.

Learn more about Vatican City

Culture and customs, catholicism.

Vatican City is ruled by the Pope who is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. The rest of the leaders of the Vatican are made up of Catholic clergy of various nationalities. Catholicism shares some beliefs with other Christian practices, but key Catholic beliefs are that the Bible is the inspired, error-free, and revealed word of God and that baptism, the rite of becoming a Christian, is essential for eternal salvation.

Geography and environment

Vatican City is located in the centre of the city of Rome. It’s the smallest country in the world, with an area of 44 hectares.

Best time to visit Vatican City

Vatican City enjoys a temperate climate most of the year, with June, July and August being the warmest months. Popular tourist spots can get very busy and crowded during the European summer, but the sun is shining and the weather is hot so it's still a great time to go.

April to May and September to October (while not as hot) still offer great conditions for travel, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. It can get quite cold in the winter months of December and January.

Eating and drinking

If you take food or drinks when you visit the Vatican Museum you will need to leave them in the cloakroom for the duration of your visit. The museum has a cafeteria and pizzeria, and there are several other cafes and vending machines that can be found throughout the Vatican.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Vatican City?

Major credit cards are accepted at the ticket office for the Vatican Museum. Cafes and shops within the museum will also accept credit cards. Small souvenir shops within St Peter’s Basilica or in the square will only accept cash.

What is ATM access like in Vatican City?

There are only a few ATMs in Vatican City, so it’s easier to withdraw cash in the neighbouring city of Rome before you enter.

Is Vatican City open to the public every day of the year?

The Vatican is closed on Wednesday mornings for papal audiences, which is when Piazza San Pietro is busiest. The Vatican Museum is closed on Sundays, except on the last Sunday of each month when entry is free, however, on these days you can expect to find large crowds. St Peter’s Basilica is open every day, but it may be especially busy on Sundays and special religious days such as Easter. Masses are held in St Peter’s Basilica frequently throughout each day.

Is Vatican City a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Homosexuality is legal in Vatican City, but it is a much-discussed topic in the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican sees same-sex relationships as a sin and for this reason, LGBTQIA+ travellers may attract unwanted attention and officials, such as police, may not be sympathetic if anti-social behaviour is reported. For this reason, we encourage our travellers to exercise discretion when in the Vatican.

Is there a dress code for Vatican City?

Modest clothing is recommended for travellers who wish to visit the Vatican. If you are wearing low-cut or sleeveless tops, shorts, miniskirts or a hat, you may be refused entry.

Are you allowed to take photos inside Vatican City?

You are permitted to take photos for personal use only, in all areas of the Vatican Museums, apart from the Sistine Chapel. The use of tripods, stands, selfie sticks and any professional photography equipment must be authorised in advance by the Directorate of the Vatican Museums. Flash photography is not allowed at any time.
