Many foreigners choose to retire in Chiang Mai, Thailand, because the climate is very comfortable with four seasons like spring. Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand, which is also suitable for leisure travel.

Which island in Thailand is more recommended for Seniors?

If you want an island that is convenient, well developed and can fly directly, Phuket is preferred, followed by Krabi and Koh Samui.

If the beach environment is more important, Krabi is a good choice. Many places have direct flights to Krabi, followed by a 1-hour bus ride to Ao Lan. Here is great, compared to Phuket clean a lot, prices are also lower than Phuket.

For one city, you can choose Bangkok, with Ayutthaya surrounding, the water market, the beauty beach of Pattaya, etc.; or you can also expect Chiang Mai, with Chiang Rai, Bay County; or for beach tour, Phuket will provide you with three major beaches, there you can properly arrange your island tour.

What is the best time of year to visit Thailand?

Due to the tropical monsoon, Thailand is clearly divided into three seasons throughout the year: March to May, when the temperature is the highest, averaging 89 - 100℉(32 - 38°C), is called the "hot season" and the air is dry. During the rainy season, the average monthly temperature is maintained at around 80 - 82℉(27-28℃). After the rainy season, Thailand has the best season of the year, the "cool season", which is from November to February, with an average temperature of 66 - 79℉(19 - 26℃). Although it is called "cool season", the temperature is not low.

For seniors, the cool season is undoubtedly the best season to travel. If you need to travel to Thailand during the hot season, summer dress is recommended. You will need a spare jacket and long pants because many of the attractions in Thailand are Buddhist-related and you must wear long pants to enter, and there is a big temperature difference between indoor and outdoor. Also a special reminder, don't forget to bring sunscreen hats and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun during this period.

The tour was a good experience as it was kinda unique in a different way. Our guide , Suchin Temo was excellent and an added asset to your company indeed! Driver was nice and a safe one too. The only complain to this trip was accommodation. Hot water services was inadequate in most of the hotels (Doi Maesalong, has intermittent hot water and Diamond Park Inn ) has no elevator and AC was blowing hot air all night. Wat een fantastische tour met eigen professionele gids (Nicky) en een erg goede chauffeur; echt tot in de puntjes verzorgd. Dit was precies wat ik zocht: een mooie combinatie van tempels, Buddha's, paleizen, markten, uitkijkpunten etc. Je zit natuurlijk best een hoop uren in de minivan, maar er zijn vele stops gemaakt onderweg; ik vond het prima zo. Ik heb voor en na de rondreis 2 extra nachten bijgeboekt, om de steden Bangkok en Chiang Mai wat beter te kunnen leren kennen. Bovendien kan je dan even wennen aan de temperatuur en de tijdsverandering. Ik ben vooral blij met de extra nachten die ik in Chiang Mai had; Het enige wat ik tijdens de rondreis gemist heb, is een bezoek aan een diervriendelijke olifantenopvang (dus zonder aanraken, wassen en/of erop zitten: dat is dierenmishandeling); Nicky heeft mij verteld over een plek in Chiang Mai, waar ik de volgende dag alleen naartoe ben gegaan. Geweldig!

Fantastic trip ! I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Our guide spoke excellent English and was always explaining things to us, sharing information about plants or food or the history of the area and people. He had a great way of keeping the motivation and energy of the group high using laughter and fun. He’s just so good at his job. The local guides worked so hard for us as well carrying water and supplies and stepping stones if necessary. The host families were amazing preparing delicious foods and sharing their culture and customs. This is a really unique and challenging trip to take (from the perspective of opening your mind to a very different lifestyle). A few things to be aware of: you absolutely need proper water shoes or sandals as there’s a lot of river crossing and flip flops are too unstable, facilities in some places may be limited such as electricity, indoor plumbing or showers. Water may be boiled. The children in the villages are the best as they seem to really enjoy interacting with the tourists! Along with the introduction to traditional Thai cultural customs I got to make friends with a group of people of all ages who came from all over the world. So fun ! Just do it you won’t regret it !

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world. 

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries. 

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city. 

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era. 

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up. 

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.  

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Do I need a visa to visit Thailand?

Have you ever considered traveling to Thailand? It should be on your bucket list and there is no time like the present to make it happen. Thailand is a long way from the United States so plan on going for more than a day. A couple of weeks is a better time frame. Just plan your trip carefully and take advantage of stops along the way. Remember to talk to your doctor before starting your trip. Taking baby aspirin and wearing compression socks may be of benefit as you will be on the flight for quite a few hours. However, the planning is worth it. Travel to see the best of Thailand.

Travel to Thailand between November and April to avoid the rainy weather notorious during the other months of the year. The jet lag going there is not easy but the jet lag coming back is much worse. Be prepared but do not let this stop you. The best of Thailand is a must-see at least once in your life. Per the Coworker Lab:  Thailand is simply “heaven on earth for foodies.”  Be prepared for a feast!

Arrive in Bangkok

Getting to Thailand is not inexpensive but the relatively low cost after you arrive makes the trip more affordable. The Thai baht is the currency in Thailand. As of this writing, one Thai baht is an awesome $.029. You read it correctly! However, expect to pay “normal” travel costs for lodging and food in Bangkok. The costs go down significantly when you reach the outlying areas. You can discover rooms in Bangkok for 400 THB ($11.60), or a hotel for 1350 THB ($39.15). This may not be the norm so do not plan your costs according to this. Be prepared for Western rates as travel to Thailand becomes more frequent by those in the United States.

Khao Yai National Park

Khao Yai National Park is a protected area in Thailand that was established in 1962. The park is located in the northeastern region of Thailand and is a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

DAY 1 Bangkok Arrive Bangkok airport, meet our staff and transfer straight to your hotel. Our staff will brief you about all the activities. Dinner on your own. Option for dinner cruise on Chao Phraya River, depending on arrival time.

On the following morning before your transfer to Kaeng Krachan, visit the Bangkok Floating Market, a colorful market which reflects the traditional Thai lifestyle of days gone by.

2 Kaeng Krachan National Park After lunch transfer to Kaeng Krachan National Park, the largest and least-visited national park in Thailand, located in Phetchburi province. Enjoy wildlife viewing by 4WD until sunset. Visit a salt lick to see wild animals and tracks.

Highlights:

Hiking, Wildlife Viewing, Birdwatching, Night Drive. Camping or Lodging Option.

Wildlife: Over 40 mammal species including elephant, tiger, clouded leopard, Malayan sun bear, Asiatic black bear, slow loris, binturong, serow, barking deer, mouse deer, tapir, Malayan pangolin, and 3 species of primates - gibbons, dusky langurs and long-tailed macaques. Local hill tribes also claim there are Sumatran rhinoceros by the border with Burma, but this is doubtful. The park is also home to more than 250 species of birds including five species of hornbills.

DEEP JUNGLE CAMPING OPTION: Our base camp is the ideal spot to see langurs, serows and other wildlife. Each day we'll choose from a variety of hikes, including the road to Mt. Pakarang, a trail to the beautiful Hanuman cave, a spectacular waterfall, and a salt lick basin, a hot spot for wild elephants. Animal tracks are everywhere! We've even spotted wild tiger tracks and "sandboxes"! We'll also hike to a calm, secluded stream, where wild animals come to drink. Gibbons, Langurs, Macaques, Bears, Gaurs, Civets, Giant Squirrels, Porcupine, Flying Fox, and 6 species of hornbills are often seen here. DAY 3 Kaeng Krachan National Park

Enjoy wildlife and bird watching by foot and 4WD jeep on the Pha-nean Thung route. Hike to a beautiful waterfall deep in the rainforest. After dinner enjoy a night safari for nocturnal animals such as jackals, civet cats, Malayan porcupine, or possibly even a rare black leopard (yes, we’ve really seen them!). Overnight camping or lodging.

DAY 4 Kui Buri National Park Enjoy wildlife at Kui Buri National Park which is rich in flora and fauna such as tiger, elephant, gaur, deer, porcupine, monkey, wild boar and an incredible number of bird species. Kui Buri is known to be the best elephant and gaur sighting area in Thailand. It is almost a certainty that visitors will see elephants on any day. The forest consists of dry and moist evergreen forests with trees such as Dipterocarpus tuberculatus, Hopea odorata, Terminalia chebula and different species of palms.

The national park is home to one of biggest population of gaurs in Thailand with an estimated count of around 100 individuals and around 320 elephants. Wild mammals such as gaurs, elephants, golden jackals, leopards, deers, bantengs, langurs are common in the national park. Overnight: Vatikar Reso Hotel Kui Buri or similar.

DAY 5 Ko Talu Island - Kayaking, Karst & Beaches Depart Kui Buri in the morning and transfer to Koh Talu Island. Lunch on the island, then enjoy free Kayaking or sailing for 1 hour. Overnight at Koh Talu Island Resort.

Highlights: Snorkeling, Sea-Kayaking & Brilliant White-Sand Beaches.

Boat to beautiful Ko Talu Island for snorkeling, kayaking and relaxing on the beach. Thailand's famous shallow turquoise waters are perfect to explore the kaleidoscope of colorful coral reefs.

DAY 6 Ko Talu Island - Snorkeling Explore the kaleidoscope of colorful coral reefs by snorkeling in the morning and afternoon, or choose to go hiking on the island in the afternoon. Overnight at Koh Talu Island Resort.

DAY 7 Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park Depart Koh Talu in the morning and transfer to Khao Sam Roi Yod National Park. This small park contains a diverse array of habitats: ten distinctive habitat zones in all, including high steep limestone mountains, fine sandy beaches, spectacular caves, forest trails, estuarine and mangrove habitats. Lunch upon arrival, then visit the famous Praya Nakorn Cave where King Rama 5 visited in 1890 had a Buddhist pavilion built in the cave, called "Phra Thi Nang Khuha Kharuhad". It is said that when sunlight shines through on opening in the ceiling and lights the pavilion it is the most beautiful cave in Thailand. Overnight at Privacy Beach Resort or similar.

DAY 8 Bangkok - Grand Palace - Chiang Mai This morning transfer to Bangkok. After lunch visit The Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The breathtaking Grand Palace was built in 1782 and was the residence of the kings for 150 years. Next door is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, a wonderland of golden towers and grand buildings decorated with glittering mosaics, widely regarded as the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. DAY 11 Cooking Class - Doi Suthep - Bangkok Enjoy a phenomenal cooking class led by a world-renewed professional Thai chef who will teach you to prepare tasty Thai dishes. Later visit Doi Suthep, the spectacular Buddhist temple that can be seen from wherever you happen to be in the city, clinging to the mountainside near the summit of Doi Suthep. Doi Suthep is the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. Then transfer to Chiang Mai airport. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the longest reigning monarch in the world, having celebrated his 67th year of reign in 2013. He and the rest of the Royal Family are greatly revered by the Thai people.

Thailand is one of the most strongly Buddhist countries in the world with more than 90% of Thais practicing Theravada Buddhism. There are many other faiths in Thailand, all of which are allowed full freedom of expression. The temple (wat) is very important in Thai society and is the heart of social and religious life. Monks are highly revered.

Thailand has a growing population of about 55 million and 10% is flooded in the capital of Bangkok. It is basically an agricultural country and about 75% of the people work in the fields. Those living near the coastal zones are engaged in commercial fishing and marine farming from fish and prawns to oysters. The other 25% work in the cities. Assimilation of other races from Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam in the early past was inevitable, being sandwiched in the middle of these countries. It is the tolerant nature of the Thais, which largely account for the large groups from neighboring countries who have now become Thai citizens. Besides its neighbors early immigrants come from as far as India, China, Malaysia and even European countries. These groups thus account for 20% of the population amongst 80% of ethnic Thais. The ethnic composition is as diverse as Thailand's attractions, especially so among tourist belts and coastal regions. The hill-tribes form a very interesting group in the northern highlands. History links them as far as China and Mongolia and some of them have fair skin and slanted light brown eyes. There are about 400,000 hill tribes living in the north, with their own language and culture - truly an enriching experience when visiting their homesteads. They are the Karen, Lahus, Yao, Akha, Lisu and Meo. The last hill tribes are more exposed to the commercial world and could be seen even in Bangkok and other provinces selling their handicraft. (Handicrafts purchased at their villages have a better chance to be authentic, as duplicates have been manufactured.)

Thai is the official and national language in Thailand used at all levels of administration in government and other commercial offices. However, English is the second language and is widely used in the cities and tourist related industry. Other European languages are used in hotels or restaurants where a particular group is predominant.

The unit of currency is the Thai baht. 1 baht is divided into 100 satang. At the time of writing, in the previous three years there were approximately 30-34 baht to the dollar. Please check the current exchange rate. Notes are in denominations of 1000 (brown), 500 (purple), 100 (red), 20 (green) and 10 (brown) baht. Coins come as 25 satang, 50 satang, 1 baht, 5 baht and 10 baht. Major currency bills and travelers checks can be cashed easily at hotels, tourist shops, banks and money-changers.

Voltage & Outlets

Electricity can vary by location in Thailand but is usually 220 volts, 50 cycles/sec, with Type A or Type C outlets. You will need to bring a converter for any appliances you plan to use that can't handle the higher voltage. Additionally, you will need a plug adapter that fit the specific plug types mentioned above. Please note that power points installed in bathrooms are meant for shavers only.

Most places in Thailand are humid and warm as it is in the tropics, except for the highlands in northern regions. As a general guideline, the hot season is from late March to June, rainy months being July to October and February. For Chiang Mai and further north, bring along windbreakers and pullovers as the evening temperatures drop quite a bit.
