President of The DIS Releases Statement Regarding Recent Allegations [Update]

Please be aware that this is a personal statement! Corey Martin, President of the DIS, has released a statement regarding recent allegations that have come to light about Pete Werner. 

You can read what Martin posted on the DIS Boards in full below: 

“As an individual member of this team, I find it necessary to make a personal statement regarding the current situation. I want to clarify that this statement is not an official communication on behalf of the company; rather it reflects my personal thoughts and feelings on the matter. 

The recent allegations have deeply impacted us all. We are facing a challenging and sensitive situation that has left many of us in shock and disbelief. As a team, we are doing our best to navigate and process this new information while also striving to continue with our responsibilities to the best of our abilities. 

It is important to acknowledge that these allegations have resulted in unwarranted attacks on some of us and our families online. Such behaviour is unacceptable and I urge everyone to treat each other with respect and empathy during this difficult time. It is crucial to remember that each team member not involved in the situation deserves the space and process ad cope without undue interference. 

I understand that people may have varying opinions and emotions regarding this issue, and I respect that. However, I kindly request that you allow us the time and privacy we need while we await an official response. 

In the meantime, I want to assure everyone that we remain committed to fulfilling our job responsibilities, and the show will go on. We understand the importance of transparency and accountability, and we trust that the appropriate measures will be taken by the company to address the situation appropriately. 

Thank you for understanding and respecting our need for privacy during this challenging time.”

In addition to Martin’s statement, Disboards user ainswokp has posted a screenshot of what appears to be a statement from Craig Williams, Video Producer for the DIS/DIS Unplugged. You can read what Williams wrote below: 

“The turn is the team found out about the allegations the same way others discovered the information. I can speak for our team when I say we are all still processing because this is a very complicated matter. Silence isn’t the way, and you, the Patreon supporters, as well as all listeners and watchers of the DIS Unplugged deserve more. I’m sorry for any trust we may have broken. None of us thought we’d ever be in this position, and I just ask for your patience while we work through this ourselves. 

We will have more to say soon. Thank you to those who continue to support us as well as those who have made the decision to move on.”

“Effective immediately, Peter Werner has resigned his position as CEO of Dreams Unlimited Travel, Inc. and as Owner/Editor-in-Chief of The DIS (as well as all related websites and properties). 

John Magi, President and Co-Owner of Dreams Unlimited Travel, will continue to run the day-to-day operations of Dreams Unlimited Travel, Inc. and assume the CEO responsibilities as well. 

Corey Martin, the President of The Dis, will maintain his role with both The DIS and its affiliated sites while taking on executive responsibilities. Mr. Werner’s ownership interest in the above businesses is currently being divested.”

“By now I’m sure most of you have seen my blog post about Pete’s departure from Dreams Unlimited Travel and the DIS. If not you can read it here . 

I know many of you want my official take on the situation. Due to legalities and under the advice of council I am not permitted to comment on the allegations. I may be able to say more in the future but I can’t as of right now. 

I can say that Dreams Unlimited Travel and The DIS both have incredible teams of people working for and with us. We are a very strong organisation and we will continue to grow and improve, as we have done every year we have been in business. I have the best people in the world working for and with me and I am so grateful for all of them. We are on strong financial footing and our business continues to grow. 

For those on these boards who have decided it is OK to be mean, nasty, and threatening to Kevin and myself I must say I am totally and completely appalled. We have always been nice, friendly and respectful to everyone we have met. The vitriol and hatred coming our way is uncalled for and disturbing. Just because my response

wasn’t fast enough for some people you have decided that it’s appropriate to hide behind an anonymous screen name and post whatever you like. You have created false narratives and fabricated stories without knowing the first thing about us.

For those who have been supportive and good friends both on the boards and in ‘real life’ I am eternally grateful to have you in our lives. Your friendship is a blessing and I am humbled by your support.”

Goings On at Dreams Unlimited Travel, and DIS Podcasts DisBoards etc.

Posting because I know some people here have mentioned using Dreams Unlimited Travel, especially for cruises. There's a lot going on at those companies right now - allegations of very bad mistreatment of employees by Pete and litigation with Amex over amounts owed on a Pete personal card plus a corporate card, with the amounts totaling >$900k. The Amex cases are publicly available on the Florida Orange County court clerks site. I'm not here for gossip, but there are issues that could affect people's choices of who to do business with, and it's not inconceivable the companies could not survive. I hope they do, and my full hope would be that others involved in those ventures take over and succeed moving forward. Maybe they could even go lighter on the ban hammer on the forums. But if not, be prepared. Websites can disappear in an instant. When Josh died, my first move was to download all the trip reports I posted at the EasyWDW forums. I also reached out to arrange alternate communication channels with 1 or 2 people just in case. That was a good thing because when Josh's family decided to shut it down, they gave no notice. To be clear, they owed us nothing and had the right to do it, but if you had not already prepared, you lost all that was there. I really hope the DIS forums, podcasts and DUT all survive and my guess is they probably will. But you never know. The DIS has never been my favorite WDW site, but it's hard to imagine the online WDW community without it. Finally, there's a long thread at the DIS forums with the title "Disappointed," if you want to wade through pages and pages to see more details. A few of the team employees have posted there as well. If the mods here would rather not get into this at all, I won't be offended if this is removed. I wavered a bit today before deciding to post. On balance I thought the information useful.  

@BLTIsNotASandwich - Oh my, I spend most of my Disney internet time on DISboards because it is so busy and has so many people with such a range of knowledge that I feel I can get reliable answers (and also that I have something to contribute). I certainly hope DISboards can continue, despite Pete's issues. We haven't done business with DUT but I have considered it for the next time we cruise. Omg I just read all 24 pages of that thread. I stopped being a member of the boards years ago, and stopped watching their videos And podcasts quite a while ago. I dont Want to get into too much bashing but the owner always seemed liked A shady person to me but even this I didn’t expect . That being said there are a lot of people I know and are friends with IRL because we all met ( and left lol) the DIS  

As some here, I am on the Disboards also - have been for many years (just like I was with MO). Earlier in the week I started reading a thread there that has since been deleted. I called one my sons since he listens to the podcast shows all the time but he is not on the boards. I just said/asked, had he heard anything, something is up/is going on but I did not have much clue. Next morning of course I started to read more and more and it took me to the "other message board" and it took me two/three days to catch up. The "disappointing" thread was created and so far is still up. There is also a thread/statement from "Cory". I thought the same when I kept reading - OMG, Wow and wow - yet nothing should be shocking me anymore. Let's see what happens moving forward.

I am not welcome there anymore because I was friends with a couple of moderators who got banned 2 years ago, so they also banned me and like a 10-20 other of their friends. which always seemed insanely petty. Based on what those former mods told me I am approximately 0.0% surprised. Pete was a huge }%]^ } to one of them and disrespected the other pretty badly. I wouldn’t use DUT if they paid me.

I booked a cruise through DUT in the past. Was my only experience, didn't have any issues. Also have an ABD trip booked through them that is for December. Hopefully that's not affected in any way... I booked through DUT because of the extra $400 discount they provide.  

So, you made me look, because I hit the forums daily - mostly - but I'm not a podcast person (I'm not really into vids per se' - even TV). It seems like a large group of people to sink. I actually never realized the forum came from the podcast or that the travel company was connected. It would be horrible if this sank the forums and the travel company - that doesn't seem fair as they only seem connected by association to the podcast. Maybe I am missing the whole story.

Wow great reading. The Queen is dead? I'm not a fan of Disboards as I'm occasionally off color and they really don't appreciate that. I don't use travel agents as a rule. And I found their podcast a bit too swishy for my taste. But I love a good scandal and this one is juicy smollet!  

AFAICT, at this point the travel agency is the main business behind everything there. The real estate company was short lived. There is a DVC broker/rental primary advertiser, but I believe no cross-ownership. The forums, news website and podcasts apparently exist primarily to generate business for the agency. They also generate some independent cash via advertising and subscriptions. The person at the heart of the alleged wrongdoing is a founder and significant owner of the whole enterprise so it's not a simple matter to unwind him.  

Some pretty nasty stuff, that man is a narcissist.

I also am not welcome at DISboards. Its been a long time since I was there. I much prefer the friendly people here. I also liked the old passporter board but that was more general Disney and not a lot of DVC.

Even given the significant sum in the court filings, I would doubt that's going to result in the insolvency of the business. What seems more likely is DUT Inc. will try and be removed, leaving Pete with personal liability, and he'll have to cover that with personal assets the way any debt proceeding would be born out. The issue is Amex is unlikely to want to let the business off the hook because you want the deepest pocket at the table, and depending on how they proceed DUT may eventually have to take action against Pete or somehow recoup whatever is settled with Amex. I would be shocked if $1MM would fully sink this business, that's a relatively small amount for a company this size. I think other posters have hit on the real issue, all of this stuff has impaired the intangible value of the business going forward. Whomever owns the business going forward - and remember that may still include Pete despite all of this - will have to determine how to reposition.

I think the mistake is continuing the show without putting forth a formal statement that acknowledges the legal proceedings & until it’s resolved the show will no longer involve Pete. The law suit looks like it was filed months ago. Now I wonder if Pete distanced himself because he really wanted to or because he had to.  

It's entirely possible they're being advised to not discuss what is happening for legal reasons. That puts them in a difficult spot. I do think the excuse they gave was very strange. Would have been better as Ryno seemed to do on his personal YT channel to deal with it with a "it was a crazy week" and we're still here for you. Stating the studio is suddenly moving for mobility issues for two guys who have done everything except land on the moon together seems a knock on our intelligence.  

I made this comment in the Patreon page under the latest “After Show” I think it isn’t as easy to address it at this current time because of what possibly legally they are able to say and do. Since these allegations are on that website which I never heard of/existed and the public records about Amex, they can do so much I think. But I do agree it does eventually NEED to be addressed. No matter how difficult it will be for everyone. There should even be a dedicated episode about it IMO. May not have to be about the experiences of the 2 former employees have come out via the website, but also maybe from the perspectives of the hosts AND maybe former employees. Idk how it will be at the Disneyland meetup. How awkward will that be? Will they be transparent at the event? Are people right now who are discovering this mess and have plans made to go to Disneyland for the meetup canceling them right now as we speak? Only time will tell in less than a week. My heart goes out not only the former employees but to also the current ones who got sucked into this mess without actually being involved in them.  

You just hit on one of the difficulties for the residual on-air personalities. Even if you take at face value they were unaware of the circumstances or were maybe even victims themselves in their own way, I don't know how you get this information and move forward with the same organization. When the bon appetit scandal happened, most of the on-air talent left because they viewed continuing on as condoning the behavior. It's a brutal predicament because this specific job is of extremely limited supply. You're weighing personal values against work ambition and the need to provide for your family. Unfortunately, it's the limited supply that also seems to have enabled management's behavior.  

Can’t say I’m surprised at all of this. It has always been apparent even to a listener/viewer that, regarding Pete, it was his way or the highway. I pretty much stopped listening after JL and Teresa ended The Trip. Kudos to to Sean F. and Dustin for speaking their truth. My guess is that Pete will sell off his interests in the Dis and DU to pay off his Amex debt and the separation will be complete.

You can never spend enough

The impacts are sad. DISboards is one of the best places to get real time accurate info and a huge portion of that is due to long time members and moderators.

I'm guessing that they are moving the studio b/c pete is going to need to sell the house to cover his financial liability.

I don't blame anyone on the team who worked through these times, but the idea that everyone is stunned by the allegations is not being honest. It's part of the current zeitgeist that having relationships at work, certainly one where the boss is in a relationship with a subordinate is inappropriate. In the industry I am in, one of you would either be expected to find alternative employment, or at least sign a series of agreements stating the situation and the company's lack of liability going forward. In either case, you would never want a direct supervisor in a relationship with a direct report - that is a recipe for disaster. So to work with someone for over a decade knowing this person has been in a number of relationships with staff members, that staff members are terminated or leave on acrimonious terms routinely - I mean what dimension are you in that you read these allegations and think "SHOCKING!" The allegations are on another level, and I can take at face value the team is learning their extent right now with all of us. However, to think nobody thought they'd be in this position - this is what happens when the boss is dating his employees - this is exactly why that is frowned upon. You have someone with great power and leverage in a position to lean on someone with little to none. How this outcome can be unforeseen to the staff, that is baffling.

Yes! So very disappointed, sad and angry. I need this outlet to just express my feelings. I travelled with the team on an ABD trip back in 2011 - way before the video podcasts were even a thing. And we were loyal followers for about a decade after that. In recent years, we stopped watching videos on Tuesday because it just wasn't the same. The description of Pete in the allegations was not the Pete we hung out with for a week over a decade ago. It really bothers me to hear these stories. I only hung out with him for a week, but I can only imagine what the team and others are feeling. I just want to reach out to all of the Dis team members and give them a hug. And I also applaud those brave men who came forward with their stories.  

I definitely don’t think the team is to be blamed. I hope resolution is found quickly and that the Dis can be rebranded.
