There are no formal requirements for this role, but experience of working in a hotel, restaurant or bar can be useful. GCSEs in English and maths will be helpful. You could apply to work as a cruise ship steward directly or through specialist agencies. Customer service is an important part of the role, so most cruise liners will expect you to have worked in a customer service job before. As you'll be travelling around the world, it may also be helpful if you can speak a second language. Junior Assistant Cruise Director

The Junior Assistant Cruise Director is an entry-level position on the Cruise Staff team. This team provides fun and exciting activities for guests, like trivia games, Zumba® classes, ice sculpture demonstrations, dance lessons, and arts and crafts. In this role your goal is to help the Cruise Staff provide a premium entertainment package and make our guests’ vacations memorable. Deck Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for safe navigation of the ship, maintaining a 24-hour watch by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Every ship employs three Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Officer, Senior 2nd Officer, and 2nd Officer to cover the three watches. Each watch is supported by a Junior Watchkeeper in the rank of 3rd Officer.

Environmental Officer

The Environmental Officer is responsible for ensuring the highest possible levels of compliance by shipboard staff with all established environmental standards, in line with the company’s core values.

Security Officers are responsible for leading a team of security personnel in monitoring guest and crew activities, investigating security matters that arise, and promptly reporting and correcting security issues in order to maintain a safe and secure shipboard environment in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ experience as a law enforcement officer or service in a maritime military/LE organization. Criminal Investigation experience is preferred as well as knowledge of ISPS code and experience with security surveillance and screening equipment.

Technical Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for maintaining a 24-hour watch in the ship’s Engine Room, by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Depending on vessel size, each ship employs either three or four Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Engineer and 2nd Engineer.

Hotel Services Engineer

The Hotel Services Engineer leads an onboard Hotel maintenance team in achieving the highest standards appearance for guests and crew area, prompting defect correction in a cost-efficient manner while in line with our company strategy and core values.

The Hotel Services Engineer is responsible for all aspects of Hotel maintenance utilizing the services of the tradesmen within his/her sub-department, as well as the electrical and ventilation departments. Second Plumbers are responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of the onboard water, sanitary, and heating systems in a cost-efficient manner that is in compliance with company safety standards.

3rd Engineer

Third Engineer Officers are responsible for operating, inspecting, and maintaining engines, machinery, and equipment in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner to the highest professional standards.

The IT Officer works closely with the shoreside IT group to ensure all onboard systems perform at optimum levels.

Requirements Applicants must have at least two years' related experience in areas of user support within a medium-sized LAN; a thorough knowledge of computer systems including but not limited to Linux, MS Office, Windows Client and Server editions; and experience troubleshooting PC hardware, software applications, and network connectivity. Public Health Officer

As a Public Health Officer you will monitor shipboard public health and infection control procedures and assist both shipboard Management and Corporate Public Health Director in overseeing the implementation and compliance with shipboard prevention and control activities at all response levels including for COVID-19, AGE, and other communicable diseases.

Additionally, you will participate as a key member of the shipboard Outbreak Management Team (OMT), coordinate the implementation and compliance with OMT decisions and oversee the correct and safe storage, par levels, condition, and use of all infection control related PPE, disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and other supplies and related equipment.

Photography & Video Departments

Onboard photography is primarily centered on portrait and event photography, using both natural locations and onboard studio setups with backdrops and studio lighting. Our Videographers produce a souvenir DVD documenting the cruise experience from beginning to end, showing both onboard entertainment and port tours and destinations. The duties of a ship steward/ship stewardess include, but are not limited to:

Dressing appropriately for social events, such as formal dinners or cocktail parties
Taking inventory of all food and beverage supplies on board the yacht at the start of each charter trip, and restocking supplies as needed throughout the trip
Helping with deck work including cleaning and polishing surfaces, scrubbing the hull, or organizing storage areas
Participating in safety drills, lifeboat training, and other emergency procedures
Greeting guests upon arrival and departure, as well as during social events onboard the yacht
Preparing food and drink orders for guests, including preparing special dishes upon request

Working conditions

Ship stewards and stewardesses work aboard ships, providing service to the passengers and crew. They work in close quarters with other members of the vessel’s staff and must be able to get along well with others.

Ship stewards and stewardesses typically work long hours, often more than 12 hours per day, and may be required to work on weekends and holidays. They may also be required to work overtime when the vessel is in port for extended periods of time. The work can be physically demanding, and they must be able to lift and carry heavy objects, such as luggage and supplies. They also must be able to stand for long periods of time and be comfortable working in close quarters.

Minimum qualifications

A high school diploma is generally the minimum required to work as a ship steward/ship stewardess. Some yachts may prefer to hire candidates with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality or a related field. These degrees can help candidates get a head start in the industry and learn valuable skills.

Most ships will train their crew members, but the length and type of training will vary. Some ships will train their crew members in the basics of the job, such as cleaning and serving, while others will train their crew members in all aspects of the job. Some ships will train their crew members in first aid and safety procedures.

Food Safety / Food Hygiene Level 2 Certificate:

All MLC complaint vessels require staff involved in food handling and catering activities on board to hold a recognised food safety certification. Due to the fact that there are a number of awarding bodies, accepted by different flag states, you are likely to encounter variations in this course. It is important to ensure that a) the course that you choose is MLC compliant and b) accepted by the flag state that you choose to work under. In order to meet the requirements of the majority of flag states, including the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency, it is recommended to pursue an MCA approved version of the course.

MCA Approved Food Safety / Hygiene in Catering Level II

Proficiency in Security Awareness / Duties Certificate

In order to work on an ISPS-compliant vessel, an STCW proficiency in security certificate is required. Proficiency in Designated Security Awareness (PSA) is the minimum requirement, whereas Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) is required for crew who are designated security duties on such vessels.

Both courses can be done in class or online. *ISPS complaint yachts are commercial yachts larger than 500GT (Usually commercial yachts +50m in length)*

What is a cabin steward on a cruise? Learn about the people who keep your room clean

One of the best parts of a cruise is that you don't have to worry about dusting, vacuuming, scrubbing or otherwise lifting a finger to clean during your vacation. That's due, in large part, to your room steward (also known as a cabin steward or cabin attendant). These cruise line employees make sure your cabin stays tidy throughout your sailing.

What else should you know about your cruise cabin steward? In this piece, I'll lay out their duties, what you can (and can't) ask them to do and what sets them apart from the folks who straighten up your room at a hotel or resort.

Room steward duties

In addition to cleaning and sanitizing your room and bathroom before you embark, your cabin steward is also responsible for tidying and cleaning your cabin during your cruise.

Many cruise lines offer twice-a-day service in each cabin. That means you can expect your room steward to come in sometime between breakfast and lunch to make up the beds, remove any used glasses or room service trays and provide fresh towels and toiletry refills when necessary.

They'll also pay visits to your stateroom at night, likely while you're at dinner, to provide turndown service, which sometimes includes treats like pillow chocolates and towel animals. On lines that still provide paper printouts, your steward's nightly duties will also include leaving copies of the next day's activity schedule, as well as dinner invitations, shore excursion tickets and flyers for events like art auctions and spa tours.

However, there are exceptions. Several major cruise lines — including Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line — have cut back to once-a-day room cleaning in order to trim costs. On those lines' ships, passengers can expect room straightening once per day.

If you don't want your cabin steward to enter your room, put the provided "do not disturb" magnet or hanging sign on your door. I do this when napping, getting ready for dinner or working.

As for their other tasks, room stewards are responsible for collecting clothing that passengers wish to have laundered, dry-cleaned or pressed (for a fee); restocking each cabin's minibar; and fielding requests for things like extra bedding or hangers.

What a cabin steward can (and can't) do for you

Keep in mind that a room steward is not a butler. While they can refill your ice bucket, show you how to work your TV and climate control, provide you with child-size life jackets and fold the pajamas you left strewn around the room when you ventured out for morning trivia, they won't be able to honor specific requests outside the scope of keeping your room spotless.

Here's some of what you can expect your cabin attendant to do:

Introduce themselves to you on the first day or two of the sailing.
Deliver your checked luggage to your room after you board the ship.
Remove dirty dishes, cups and room service items from your cabin.
Straighten up and tidy your room (vacuum, wipe up spills, fix beds and generally organize).
Remove dirty towels and provide new ones.
Change your bedsheets (if requested).
Set up sleeping arrangements (splitting beds, combining beds and pulling down bunks).
Refill complimentary shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and lotion.
Restock tissues and toilet paper.
Deliver daily schedules and other paper announcements.
Answer general questions or point you to the person who has answers if they don't.
Alert maintenance if something goes wrong with things like plumbing or electrical in your cabin.

They won't be able to do the following:

Answer questions related to your onboard bill.
Schedule shore excursions, dinner reservations or spa treatments for you.
Take room service orders.
Help you unpack or repack.
Offer assistive services if you have mobility issues.
Babysit your kids.
Hang out with you during your cruise.
Show you the crew quarters.

To address the first few items on the second list, you'll have to call guest services, the shore excursions desk or the spa from your cabin, or visit in person. Sometimes, you can also make these reservations on your cruise line's mobile app . If you're booked in an expensive suite that includes the services of a concierge , you'll have the option to book through them as well.

For room service , you'll have to call your ship's dedicated room service number, which is often noted on your cabin's phone. For help packing and unpacking, employ the services of a butler if you're staying in high-level accommodations. Otherwise, you're on your own.

How room stewards differ from hotel housekeepers

Although a cruise cabin steward is similar to a housekeeper who would service your room at a hotel, there's one major difference: You're likely to actually meet your room steward and, possibly, even get to know them. They will almost always knock on your door on embarkation day to introduce themselves and their team (if they aren't working alone), explain the particulars of your room and ask if there's anything you need.

It's also common for them to greet you by name when they pass you in the hallway and ask about your day.

In addition to knowing your name and the names of those traveling with you, cabin attendants have a tremendous knack for remembering special requests. Would you like a daily refill of your ice bucket? Do you prefer only one pillow chocolate instead of two? Do you want a printed copy of the daily schedule even though your cruise line only offers them on request? Do you need four washcloths instead of two? Ask your room steward.

Service on a cruise is far more personalized than what you'll receive at a standard hotel. For that reason, it's customary (except on luxury cruises where gratuities are included) to tip your room steward for a job well done. Most cruise lines charge a per-passenger daily service fee that covers the cost, but many passengers choose to leave extra in cash at the end of their sailing if they feel their cabin attendant has gone above and beyond.

Career Progression within the Cruise Industry

With an expected 30 million people choosing to take a cruise this year, cruise line companies are continually striving to build bigger and better ships, meaning that there is an ever-increasing number of opportunities for those who would like to work and progress their career at sea.

Entry Level Cruise Ship Jobs

Most people that begin their careers at sea have started in an entry level job . Some may be happy to stay in this position. Others have ambitions to move forwards with their career as quickly as possible. Entry level jobs include cleaner, pot washer, bar utility, deckhand, ordinary seaman, laundryman, bell staff and cabin steward.

Career Progression within the Cruise Industry

Cruise Career Path

The career path of a crew member isn’t always direct. A crew member may start in an entry level position in one department but may demonstrate the right skills to be transferred to another department. It is possible to quickly progress through the ranks – with the right training, skills, experience, personality, drive, and opportunity.

For example, an employee may start his/her cruise career as a Buffet Steward . After a couple of contracts s/he may change departments and work as a Guest Services Associate . A few contracts more and then this same crew member may be promoted to Crew Agent , a one-striped officer position. After a few years and some additional training, this person could then be promoted to Crew Manager and then eventually they could qualify as a Human Resources Manager .

Such a career path may not happen for everyone, or even be desired by everyone. The title of supervisor, manager or senior officer may mean a bigger salary and more responsibility, but it also means less free time, less time ashore, and less socialising.

Importance of Shipboard Experience

Once you’re onboard you will understand the importance of previous cruise ship experience . Most cruise ship job descriptions state that applicants should have previous shipboard experience, especially for supervisory and management positions. The main reason for this is that working on a cruise ship is quite different than many other industries.

Once you have shipboard experience under your belt, it means that you understand how cruise ships operate - the seven day working week, how the different departments work together and the hierarchy involved - and you will have gained an in-depth knowledge of emergency training, as well as other additional training certificates.

Career Progression

As cruise line companies are investing both time and money into training their employees, once on board you will be encouraged to seek promotion if you do well. Cruise lines typically promote from within, so entry-level jobs focus on front-line functions and customer service roles. Employers look for people with administrative and general management backgrounds, as well as people with customer service and sales skills.

Some cruise lines offer graduate schemes or cadetships on board in HR, finance, deck and engine and hotel departments.

How To Get a Promotion

To be offered a promotion to the next level or to a different department, a candidate needs the best combination of training , skills and personality . Although cruise lines tend to promote from within, sometimes they will choose an applicant from outside the cruise industry. Either way, to be considered for a promotion, you need to understand which skills and training is required depending on the department and job role.

For example, being able to speak another language is one of those skills that can make the difference between one candidate getting the job over a rival who only speaks one language.

Emergency training is also important when it comes to selecting who should be promoted. Courses such as Crowd Management or Designated Security Duties are usually required before a person can be promoted to a managerial position.

It goes without saying that everyone must wait their turn and prove themselves before getting the opportunity for a promotion. The best thing that a crew member can do is to work hard, show an excellent work ethic, get along with everyone on board, go above and beyond their responsibilities and continue with getting more training and skills.

From Second Cook to Captain…

An example of career progression within the cruise industry is that of Captain Thomas Larsen who has recently been appointed as Captain of Crystal Endeavor (Crystal Expedition Cruises), which will embark on her maiden voyage from Tokyo in August 2020.

Captain Larsen has decades of diverse nautical experience that began in his native Sweden and spans the cargo industry, Swedish Royal Navy, private superyachts, and numerous cruise ships.

Captain Larsen’s seagoing career began in 1984, when, at the age of 16, he started as a second cook before switching to the deck department. He climbed the ranks and entered the Swedish Royal Navy as seaman and bosun, then graduated from Kalmar Maritime Academy with a master mariner degree.

He spent nearly two decades with an Asia-Pacific cruise operator as staff captain and captain, helmed a private superyacht in the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean, and was recruited by Crystal in 2016 as Captain of Crystal Esprit and then Crystal Symphony.

From One Contract to Hotel Manager…

Another good example of career progression is Scarlet Perez who, after an apprenticeship in a hotel and some years of work experience, decided that she wanted to travel the world and broaden her experience. She was offered a "one contract deal" onboard a cruise ship as bar waitress – a demanding, busy and enjoyable role.

After this first contract, she decided that cruise life was for her and as she had proven to the cruise line that she was competent in the bar keeper role, she then applied for a position as Receptionist and over the years that followed, she moved through the positions of Purser , Maitre D' , Chief Purser and Hotel Manager .

Scarlet says: “I am no exception in having progressed my career onboard a cruise ship. For people with the right attitude and dedication, promotions are common. And there is always the possibility to change to a different department if you wish, provided you possess the necessary qualifications and experience.”

There are no formal requirements, but experience of working in a hotel, restaurant or bar can be useful. GCSEs in English and maths will be helpful.

Customer service is an important part of the role, so most cruise liners will expect you to have worked in a customer service job before.

As you'll be travelling around the world, it may be helpful if you can speak a second language.
