Best Horizontal Falls Tour from Broome

There are generally two Horizontal Falls Tours that include the seaplane and boat ride.

Option 1. Fly from Broome return

You have the option to fly directly from Broome to the falls for your boat tour, and back which is great for those short on time.

Option 2. Broome to Cygnet Bay four wheel drive / Cygnet Bay to Horizontal Falls scenic flight / fly directly back to Broome

This was the option I chose to take after many recommendations from previous travellers.

You’ll drive up to the tip of Dampier Peninsula, seeing some of the Kimberley sights along the way. From here, fly to Horizontal Falls for your boat tour. The return flight takes you directly back to Broome, so in other words, the four wheel drive section is only one way.

Why are Horizontal Falls so unique?

Located in Talbot Bay, the Horizontal Falls are only accessible via seaplane and high speed boats, which means only a select few ever get to actually witness this amazing phenomenon.

Driven by some of the highest tides in the world of up to 10 metres, the water is forced between two narrow gorges, pushing at incredible force to create a horizontal “waterfall” like feature.

This full review of starts in Broome, before we fly to Horizontal Falls from the tip of the Dampier Peninsula.

Four wheel drive along the Dampier Peninsula

A full day of adventure, we are picked up around 5.30 am from our Broome accommodation. The driver invites anyone who would like to join him in the front and I jump at the chance. That way I’ll get to see the road easier and maybe spot some wildlife along the way.

The first light of day slowly but surely begins to illuminate the Kimberly landscape in tones of red and somewhat purple. It’s quite magical this time of morning.

We head north along the Cape Leveque Road which is a comfortable sealed road. There is plenty of evidence of what the rains can do to the road during the rainy season, with huge gutters forming along the sides of the road.

  • Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

The Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm is our first stop, arriving around 9 am. We head inside to the restaurant for a fully cooked breakfast before our tour begins, which is included in our tour cost.

The pearl farm is the oldest in Australia and has quite a rich history which is explained to us through a video presentation and a talk from the local tour guide.

It’s quite amazing to hear how the pearling industry was formed in such a remote and challenging environment by one man, Dean Brown who came to the area, pitched a tent and set about to farm pearls.

Also, it was hard to imagine the diving conditions they were once subject to, with divers enduring many hours underwater in equipment that can only be described as heavy and prehistoric. It certainly was a hard life back in the time.

a photo of a man wearing heavy dive equipment ona boat

We head out the pearling shed to see just how they cultivated the pearls before getting to see the world’s biggest fine quality round pearl, farmed right here in Cygnet Bay.

I really enjoyed this portion of the tour and found it extremely informative and hands on. The guide displayed great enthusiasm and had some very interesting stories to tell. The tour is a great insight into how farming in such a remote part of Australia was successfully achieved all those years ago.

One Arm Point Aboriginal Community and Hatchery

Next we make our way to the community of One Arm Point Trochus Hatchery and Aquarium. It is located at the very tip of the Dampier Peninsula.

The area in incredibly scenic overlooking Jackson Island. It is here you get a good view of just how fast the tides can move in and out.

The Trochus shell was once farmed during a viable time when buttons were created and sold throughout the world. It was when plastics arrived on scene that the need for the shell was made virtually obsolete.

The hatchery, established in the late 1980’s was formed to help restock the shell along with fish, coral and various crustaceans.

Again, this was another informative tour. It provided a glimpse into an industry and a way of life so far removed from anything most of us have ever experienced. It was a privilege to hear all this from the people themselves on the land they have lived all their lives.

Seaplane flight to Talbot Bay – home to Horizontal Falls

Around midday we make our way to the local airstrip ready to board our flight. It takes around 45 minutes or so to the falls.

After a quick briefing, we are allocated a seat on the plane. What do you know, I’m in the front with the pilot. As seats are based on achieving equal weight distribution, choosing your own seat isn’t an option. Either way I’m pretty happy with the pilot’s decision.

The planes were 12 seats I believe, and though we are taking off from a dusty red airstrip, we’ll be landing on water once we get to Talbot Bay.

The take off is smooth, immediately starting a low climb that will never gain too much altitude. That’s because this portion of the flight is all about the scenery. So staying low means having spectacular views all the way.

We pass over hundreds of islands through the Buccaneer Archipelago. It is a feast for the eyes and lucky for everyone on the flight, we all have prime position.

Circling the Falls

Once we reach Horizontal Falls the excitement really ramps up.

The pilot maneuvers like a pro, circling the falls in order to give us the best possible vantage point to witness this incredible sight. It truly is a magical moment.

From here the plane makes a beeline for the water, coming in long and easy. He motors to the pontoon where we disembark for lunch.

We enjoy a meal of fresh barramundi and salad. It is by far the best seafood I have had during my time in Broome. I’m also contemplating whether to go back for seconds.

Boat ride to Horizontal Falls

All aboard the 900hp fast speed boats for a trip out to the falls.

It is unfortunate that today has been deemed unsafe to enter the falls. Therefore we must abandon any hope to experience the thrill of passing through them.

It’s a shame, but in hindsight it is not a make or break situation. Instead we are taken out on the boat not once, but twice. We were also offered a partial refund which I put that toward a boat trip to the Dinosaur footprints.

We do get to feel the power of these boats regardless, as the captain moves within range of the churning water. We hover for several minutes watching the incredible force of the tide pushing hard toward us.

Next, it’s onto Cyclone Creek for a closer look at this magnificent part of the country. The colours and textures are constantly changing as we move slowly through the water, backed up by some great commentary.

Finally, we finish with yet another rush at the entrance to the falls before heading back to the pontoon.

in the boat showing people in front as we cruise through Cyclone creek

Shark Feeding and Swim

While the words ‘shark feeding” and ‘swim’ don’t exactly go together, it’s not what it sounds.

The pontoon houses a very small tank which anyone is welcome to jump in. At the same time, the sharks in the next tank are fed by one of the team. The sharks can enter from the open water so it gets pretty crowded. They’re all waiting for something to come their way.

As far as the shark feeding goes, it was cool to watch but I had no desire to jump into the tank. Even though I had brought my bathing suit, it really didn’t look that inviting. Most other people decided to stay dry too.

Flight back to Broome

Our Broome Horizontal Falls day trip is coming to an end and it’s time to head back late afternoon.

This time we get much higher in the air still enjoying the amazing views. The afternoon sun is slowly descending and a gorgeous light reflects across the ocean below us.

It’s around 1.15 hours to Broome, and as we get closer the pilot flies over the township as well as Roebuck Bay before touching down at Broome airport.

We depart for our bus ride back to our individual accommodation, totally blown away for the day’s adventure.

Is a Horizontal Falls Tour really worth it?

This is not a cheap experience, so understandably you will be asking the question “is a Horizontal Falls Day Trip really worth it?

I have to say that while the flight and boat trip are obvious highlights of the day, the four wheel drive section along Dampier Peninsula was incredibly informative and scenic too. It was great to drive up through the Kimberley region and learn more about the region, making it a full day of diverse and unique attractions.

For the best Horizontal Falls tour, I highly recommend the drive to Dampier Peninsula first, then flying out from there. You also get to see some incredible views of the Buccaneer Archipelago.

For the price it think it is extremely reasonable for everything you get to see and do.

Taking a Horizontal Falls tour from Broome is an incredible experience that’ll take you to one of the Kimberley’s most unusual natural wonders.

David Attenborough once described Western Australia’s Horizontal Falls as “Australia’s most unusual natural wonder”. At the time, he also said that “few people have ever seen this spectacle”, but that was back in 2002 and, since then, a Horizontal Falls tour has become extremely popular.

There’s a good reason why! Visiting Horizontal Falls is one of the best things to do from Broome , with a trip combining a unique natural experience with a scenic flight across the Kimberley, plus a great meal and comfortable cruise. It’s about more than just the destination.

The Horizontal Falls are about 250 kilometres from Broome, in the Buccaneer Archipelago. There are no roads there and travelling by boat is impractical for a day trip (longer cruises along the coast do stop in, though). That’s why the only real way to do a tour to the Horizontal Falls is by plane… but that’s not a bad thing, because it’s best seen from the air anyway!

In case you’re wondering whether you should do a Horizontal Falls tour, I wanted to share a bit of information about what to expect. Although the short answer (in case you don’t want to read any further) is yes, you should do it – and you can book the tour here !

What are the Horizontal Falls?

First, though, let’s take a look at what the Horizontal Falls are because, although the name is apt, it doesn’t really describe what’s going on here.

You’ll find the Horizontal Falls on the edge of Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago. where there’s a 20-metre-wide gap in the tall red wall along the water edge, creating a 100-metre-long passage through to a lake. On the other side of this lake, the same thing happens through to another lake, meaning there are two passages in total.

You may’ve heard about the legendary tides of the western Kimberley, which can differ by up to ten metres in height between high tide and low tide. Well, these tides are the reason you get the Horizontal Falls.

As the water rushes into Talbot Bay from the Indian Ocean, it reaches these gaps in the cliffs and millions of litres try to flow through each second. It’s more than can fit, so a build-up forms on one side and the water level becomes higher than the lake on the other side. It’s created a waterfall – and a super fast one, at that!

What I think is particularly cool, though, is that the waterfall is always changing. At the extremes of the tide, it will be higher and faster. And twice a day, as the tides change, the water will flatten out and stop moving completely before a a new waterfall starts to form in the opposite direction.

How do you get to the Horizontal Falls?

There are no roads to this part of the Buccaneer Archipelago so most people get to the Horizontal Falls by plane.

The flight takes about 1 hour 15 min from Broome and about 40 minutes from Derby. It’s possible to go by helicopter, but most people choose the seaplane option.

Can you get to the Horizontal Falls by boat?

Going to the Horizontal Falls by boat is not practical as a day trip (or even an overnight trip). It’s about 12 hours one way from Broome and there’s not much along the way.

However, there are longer cruises that are going along the coastline past Talbot Bay, and some of them will stop here.

Are the Horizontal Falls worth the money?

The tour to the Horizontal Falls is not cheap but you get a lot for your money. There are the cruises in Talbot Bay, meals, some guided experiences, and the scenic flights to get there.

If you consider it to be a larger experience in the Kimberley – more than just simply visiting the Horizontal Falls – then I think it’s worth the money for something so special.

Why are the Horizontal Falls important?

The Horizontal Falls are important because there’s really nowhere else in Australia (possibly the world) where you’ll find this natural phenomenon.

It’s partly because the rocks are so old (up to 2 billion years old) and resistant to erosion that this is able to happen. And then, of course, that’s coupled with the huge tides you find in this part of Western Australia.

Although the Horizontal Falls have grown in popularity over recent years, most people in Australia have never visited. I wonder if they are actually better known by international visitors, who view them as one of the best places to visit in Western Australia .

But this is part of the adventure of visiting the Horizontal Falls – you’ll be seeing something unique that is still extremely remote. If it was easy to reach or near a capital city, it would be full of tourists every day, but you’ll get to experience it in just a small group.

What to expect on a Horizontal Falls tour

Although there are a couple of options for tour operators, there is really only one main operator I would recommend, and that’s Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures. You can see its two most popular tour options here .

The main experience the company offers is the Horizontal Falls Half-Day Seaplane & Boat Tour , and that’s the one I want to tell you about. It’s a great option and there are quite a few components to the tour.

The experience starts in Broome, where you’ll be picked up from your accommodation. The pick-up time depends on which tour you’re on – there’s a morning tour that leaves very early (normally around 5:30am) or an afternoon tour that leaves about 11:30am.

You’ll be transferred to the airport where you’ll board a seaplane. They are relatively small aircraft but don’t feel too cramped. There’s room for about 14 passengers.

From Broome Airport, you’ll fly east for about 250 kilometres, over the Dampier Peninsula, across some of the Indian Ocean, and then through the stunning Buccaneer Archipelago. The views from up here are amazing and the scenic flight is a highlight of the tour.

As you approach the destination from the air, the landscape of the archipelago looks like a giant brushstroke of ochre, solid and vibrant inland but fading out to thin tendrils and islands along the coast, the earth stark against the cobalt of the water. Bring your camera!

The advantage of flying in a seaplane is that you’re able to land right on the water at Talbot Bay. The tour operator has a large houseboat-style pontoon complex here and this will be the first stop. As well as being a comfortable place to relax, this is where you will get your meal – a cooked breakfast for the morning tour and a barramundi lunch for the afternoon.

The exact order of activities changes for each group but you will do two different boat tours while you’re here, and these are the main experiences of your time here on Talbot Bay.

One of the boat tours will be into the heart of the Horizontal Falls. The falls are made up of two channels that are separated by a narrow lake. The first channel is wide enough to safely drive a boat through and this is exactly what will happen – at high speed.

With the outboard motors roaring, you’ll hurtle through the passage, bumping uphill or downhill (depending on the tide that day), along the waterfall. It feels a bit like whitewater rapids and it’s exhilarating! The speed continues as you enter the lake, in a high-velocity arc until you’re back facing the falls and ready to go again.

The other channel is too narrow to safely take a boat through at speed, but this offers an opportunity for another fun activity. This time the skipper will back the boat into the torrent of water and run the engines hard enough that you’ll stay there without moving. You’ll get a close-up view of how strong and fast the tide is here.

The second boat tour you’ll do on Talbot Bay is much calmer. This time you’ll cruise around to see more the geology, learn about the flora and fauna, and perhaps spot a few special formations in the rocks that have been here for an incredible two billion years (that’s about half the life of the Earth)!

The birds rule the roost here because the cliffs are so steep, it can be hard for other land animals to live in this landscapes. But occasionally there are rock wallabies and even dingos, so keep your eyes peeled.

Back on the pontoon, there’s a swimming pool where you can take a dip – it’s got a cage around it to protect you from sharks and crocodiles. But that doesn’t mean the local sharks won’t come up to check you out. They’re harmless but they sometimes get fed here – and you can be in the water when that happens!

After all the activities at Talbot Bay, the Horizontal Falls tour is almost at an end. The last thing is to head back to Broome, taking to the skies in the seaplane again for another scenic flight with sweeping views of the land and water beneath. It’s quite interesting to see how different some of it will look with the change in light.

In total, the Horizontal Falls experience is about six hours long, with more than two hours of that in the plane, and about three hours on the water. I think it’s a good length of time – you never feel rushed, but you’re also ready to head back when it’s time.

Horizontal Falls tours from Broome

Broome is the base for a lot of the exploration in this coastal region of the western Kimberley and most people will do a trip to the Horizontal Falls from Broome. You’l have a few options to choose from.

The first tour option is the one I’ve just described. This is the half-day Horizontal Falls tour that includes return flights from Broome and all the activities on the water.

Another popular option adds Cape Leveque to the trip and makes it a full-day tour. This combined Cape Leveque and Horizontal Falls tour starts from Broome in a 4WD and drives for about two up to the the cape at the northernmost point of the Dampier Peninsula.

Cape Leveque is a beautiful spot, where the turquoise coastal water meets the bright white sand on the beach, lined with red rock cliffs. The cliffs have been eroded by water and wind, forming peculiar shapes that catch the sun and glow in the afternoons.

On the combined tour, you’ll have a meal here and have time to walk around and explore the beach and the cliffs. Then you’ll also get a tour of the nearby aquaculture hatchery that’s run by the Indigenous community at One Arm Point. From here, you’ll fly to Talbot Bay on the seaplane and begin the half-day itinerary.

Horizontal Falls tours from Derby

Derby is a town about 2 hours’ drive east from Broome and, although it’s small, it’s quite a popular spot for people to stop when they’re doing a longer drive through the Kimberley. It’s also much closer to the Horizontal Falls, so you can do your tours out of there, if you’re passing through.

There are two types of tours from Derby to the Horizontal Falls that you can do. The first is the standard half-day tour that I’ve already described. The only difference is that you’re flying in and out of Derby, rather than Broome.

But the other option is a bit different – it’s an overnight stay on the houseboat pontoon on Talbot Bay. The overnight tour from Derby has most of the same elements, but you’ll have added experience of seeing the sunset, the sunrise, and the bright night sky – plus the fun of hanging out on deck.

Although there are lots of things to do in Broome , many of the real treasures lay beyond the town’s borders, in the natural landscapes of the Kimberley. The Horizontal Falls may not be any more beautiful than some of the others, but it is unique – and that makes it extra special.

Getting to Broome and the Kimberley is normally an adventure in itself. While you’re here, it makes sense to add on an experience like the Horizontal Falls tour. It may seem like quite an expense, but it will be one of the highlights of your trips to the region.

The half-day Horizontal Falls tour I’ve recommended is excellent – it’s very well run, there is a great variety of activities, and there are no attempts to cut corners to maximise profit. I’m sure you’ll be happy with the operators and amazed by the sight of – and ride through – the amazing Horizontal Falls here in Western Australia.

Embark on a remarkable journey to witness the awe-inspiring Horizontal Falls, also known as Garaanngaddim. Carved by massive tidal shifts, these stunning oceanic formations in Western Australia’s Kimberley Region hold sacred significance for the Dambeemangarddee Traditional Owners.

While visitors are welcomed, it is essential to respect their cultural protocols and refrain from traversing the falls during high tides. The falls are believed to embody the Woongudd, the Creator Snake, and are revered as a symbol of ancient connections between land and sea.

Plan Your Holiday To Australia’s North West

Horizontal falls, described by david attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world”, horizontal falls is a natural phenomenon that is as intriguing as it is stunning..

In the turquoise water of Talbot Bay, the fast moving tidal current squeezes through two narrow gorges of the McLarty Range, pushing the water into rapid like formations which rush through the twin gaps at an astonishing rate, producing waterfalls turned on their side.

The powerful tides in the  Kimberley  can reach more than 10 metres and the direction of the flow reverses ensuring the water flows two different ways each day.

Located in the Buccaneer Archipelago this unique waterfall is not accessible by vehicle. You can view the Horizontal Falls from the air with a scenic flight from  Broome  or  Derby  all year round. Get up close with an extended cruise or visit by float plane and land at the Horizontal Falls and hold on tight as you take a thrilling boat ride through the rushing water torrents.

While tidal movements are all year round, tour operators can advise on the best times to view the falls as some times are better than others to get the full impact of the rushing waters.

What are the Horizontal Falls?

The Horizontal Falls are fast moving tidal currents that squeeze through two narrow gorges of the McLarty Range in Talbot Bay, located in the Buccaneer Archipelago. They are waterfalls ‘turned on their side’.

Are the Horizontal Falls accessible by vehicle?

The Horizontal Falls are not accessible by vehicle. You can view the Horizontal Falls from the air with a scenic flight or helicopter flight from Broome or Derby. There are also tours that include the flight from Broome or Derby (some by float plane) and a speed boat ride to and through the Falls themselves.

Do tours to the Horizontal Falls run year-round?

Tours which include the speed boat ride through the Falls run seasonally, from around March to November each year.  Scenic flight tours which include an overfly of the Horizontal Falls run year-round.

Do the Horizontal Falls flow in one direction?

The direction of the flow reverses according to the tides, which can reach more than 10 metres in the Kimberley. The  falls are also reversible. Each day, when the tide turns, the falls flow in the opposite direction.

What is the difference in tides at the Horizontal Falls?

Daily tidal flow through the Horizontal Falls can be more than 10m on each tide. There are spring tides and neap tides. During spring tides the water flows rapidly through the falls. During neap tides there is a weak tidal movement so those on a boat will experience a more mellow water flow. King Tides occur twice a year –between March and April and again between September and October, and at these times the difference between high and low tides is even greater.

How wide are the Horizontal Falls?

The most seaward opening is around 20 metres wide and the more inland gorge is around 12 metres wide.

Is a tour to the Horizontal Falls suitable for families with children?

Yes, we advise contacting the tour operator about the minimum age of children.

How long is the flight from Broome or Derby to the Horizontal Falls?

The flight from Broome to Talbot Bay takes approximately 1hr 15 minutes. Flights departing from Derby take approximately 40 minutes.

How long is a tour to the Horizontal Falls?

Tours to the Horizontal Falls are of different durations - half-day,  full-day, overnight and 24 hour stays, depending on the tour operator and tour option chosen.

What is the temperature at the Horizontal Falls?

The average temperature is about 33 degrees Celsius, though cruising on the water will bring fresh air.

What is the cultural value of the Horizontal Falls?

The Horizontal Falls are situated in the ancestral country of the saltwater Dambimangari people. The land is Aboriginal Reserve Land, reserved for the use and benefit of Aboriginal people, and they have exclusive possession native title over the area. The Dambimangari people chose the name Lalang-garram, being a Worrorra word meaning ‘the saltwater as a spiritual place as well as a place of natural abundance’, relating to the ocean in a general sense. The Lalang-garram /Horizontal Falls Marine Park was created in 2016 as part of the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy.

  • j0annr0se 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Brilliant day out, with spectacular views. What a day! The falls are amazing, but the whole experience is great - the views are spectacular, a great lunch and time in the falls, experiencing the full force of nature. Awesome crew, too. • Jms0723 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Full day Horizontal Falls tour goid but too long. We did the full day Falls and Dampier Peninsula Tour. Great day but far too long. I would recommend the half day tour instead and miss out on Dampier Peninsula experiences which were a bit boring and coach ride back too long and boring.Didnt get much out of the hatchery tour. Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm tour was interesting but too long. The 2.5 hr coach ride back seeing nothing on the way did not make the pearl farm tour worth it. The tour overall was very well run, staff friendly. Disappointed that I booked a drive/fly tour and at the last minute it was changed to fly/drive 'due to operational needs'. Same experience yes, but lots of recommendations to fly in arvo when colours from afternoon sun are better. Read more Written 6 October 2023
  • M4336ZVlorraines 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Nothing horrible about horifalls Amazing all day experience sooooo worthwhile the cost. Check tides before booking. We went fly drive option due to tides. Breakfast was substantial and delicious. Waterfalls a bucket list adventure. The river system tour a great experience. Flight in and out a bucket list of photo opportunities. Best was the aborinal farm of local coral coast. Best. Cygnet Bay Pearl lunch delicious and tour very good. So worth the cost. • kretzschmar232 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A unique experience When planning our trip, we had come across this tour provider and were able to book this day tour already in January without any problems. Full of anticipation, we got up early at 04:00 and were picked up on time shortly before 05:00 from our accommodation. The departure was delayed a bit because of the weather conditions, but the team was immediately able to organize the necessary adjustments for the rest of the tour. The one-hour flight to Talbot Bay and the landing on the water were an experience in themselves. The supply on the base was very good. Our two giudes gave a lot of interesting information about the geology and biology of this remote and beautiful region. The absolute highlight was the speedboat ride through one of the two horizontal falls. The return flight to Cape Leveque showed again the beauty of the region. The tour continued by land and took us to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm. Here barramundi of the highest quality was served for lunch. The laborious production of cultured pearls was also vividly demonstrated. We recommend this tour without reservation and warmly. Read more Written 16 September 2023
  • deborahkQ9606WU 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles So worth the money .... Absolutely fantastic trip from start to finish. Seaplane pilots were great: orbits around the falls, and views of whales from the air. Skipper of the power boat was amazing: great trip through the wide gap a few times! Hosting team were all bright, bubbly enthusiastic and so enjoying their work! Just do it! Read more Written 6 September 2023

  • stevepF8895GO 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Horizontal Falls experience. The combination of aerial views and boat ride gave a wonderful perspective and enhanced the overall experience. • Bazzntess 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A must do experience It’s hard to find the words - this was truly a special experience and I feel very privileged for having done it. As part of a group of 8 friends we flew from Derby for the overnight stay. Only seeing the falls from above you get to see the true scale of this phenomena and from the water it’s even more amazing. The overnight stay was a unique experience. Seeing the Horizontal Falls is as Australian as walking around Uluru or swimming on the Great Barrier Reef - it’s a must! Read more Written 22 August 2023
  • Karen T 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Worth the early start! Loved the visit to the cygnet pearl farm, very interesting and educational. • 267grega 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Turbocharged awesomeness A truly awesome experience in pristine wilderness. Every staff member was smiling and ready to assist. The planes, the pontoon facilities, the boats were all crewed by very competent people who just wanted to have a much fun as we did but were also very, very safety concious. The lunch was superb, the views while eating it beyond beautiful. Can't recommend this company and their operation to much. Six star rating out of five. Read more Written 17 August 2023
  • 385lyneb 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Horizontal Falls 18hr stay It was a great experience & a well oiled machine but the marketing folks need to update the promo material so there is a distinction between the levels of service you receive between the 18 & 24hr tours. Speaking to others, the 24hr stay is certainly 5* but the 18hr stay most definitely is not. It was enjoyable but not Chef quality catering & most bizarrely, air-conditioning in each room but no coffee machine? Only instant coffee? Silly thing to scimp on in my opinion. The seaplane was a definite experience but a working intercom for commentary on what we were passing over would have been useful on our way back. Very good pilots both ways. The trips through the falls were great & you have terrific, knowledgeable staff - just market the 18hr adventure for what it is - a budget overnight stay. Read more Written 14 August 2023
  • Greg C 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Worth every cent When looking at various options to see horizontal falls we kept coming back to the Luxury Stay with HF Seaplane Adventures. The package seemed to offer everything that we wanted to do and being able to stay out there overnight ticked all the boxes. Upon arrival at Broome Airport, Donna and Katie were very welcoming and professional ( a common theme with this company) and went through the check in process as we waited for our 'taxi' to Derby - light aircraft. Upon arrival in Derby we met the other passengers and transferred to our seaplane flight to Horizontal Falls. The flight over the falls alone is outstanding and to see the two outlets from the air as we did a few runs set the scene for the rest of the trip. Upon landing we transferred from the day trippers pontoon to the Jetwave Pearl - our accommodation for that night. We were met by the host staff and shown to our rooms on the Pearl. The accommodation is fantastic considering where we are, clean and comfortable with plenty of room and the views are incredible. While waiting for the tide to be right for the falls viewing we were split into two groups, one to go fishing and the other to be taken on a helicopter flight to see the falls and surrounds again from the air. Its a measure of the package that the staff take you fishing rather than sit around waiting for a helicopter ride as there were 19 of us and it took a while to get everyone a flight. Fishing was good - location, location, and we got back to changeover for the helicopter flight. This was sensational. Birdseye view and spectacular. We get back and lunch is served - fresh cooked barramundi do you mind and prepared by our personal chef. More on him later. After lunch its off to the Horizontal Falls on the fast boat and this was what we were here for. This phenomenon must be one of Australias top attractions. We got to see it close up and through the first of the two falls we went. The sheer volume of water flowing into the two openings is incredible and makes for spectacular viewing. The crew made it safe and enjoyable and added to the experience. Back to the day pontoon for a swim and a close up view of the shark feeding - Caitlyns knowledge and passion for the resident sea life was great. After a cheese platter and drinks back on the floating hotel we were served dinner. Eye Fillet steak as good as anything we have had and in good company as we met new friends and were attended to by our two hosts. An early start next morning as we got to see the sun rise over the range and this time we went to the falls to see the outgoing tide. Back for breakfast and then we pack and head home, two flights back to Broome. The overall experience is one of the best we have enjoyed in our travels. Pros - the incredible staff - hosts Hayley and Camille, boat crew and fishing enthusiast Tyler and super attentive Caitlyn. The pilots and the ground crew - Donna and Katie who sent out a bottle of wine for us as we had not got that sorted. The food - our amazing French chef served up top class meals and with a smile the whole time. The activities - everything we did was well thought out and offered a real experience. The setting - one of the worlds great locations. Our thanks for a truly memorable trip. No negatives by the way. Read more Written 10 August 2023

Things to consider before making a day trip from Broome

As you can see, Broome is a gateway to dozens of attractions, so it can be hard to pick which one(s) to do. Here are a few things to consider to ensure your day trip from Broome is as awesome as it can be:

The time of your visit – dry vs wet season

The dry season is the best time to explore everything Broome has to offer , but it’s also very touristy. This means accommodation costs can be higher than usual and it can be challenging to find last-minute tours.

That’s why it’s best to book ahead and secure your spot. You won’t miss anything that way.

You can also visit during the wet season, as it tends to be less crowded and accommodation prices are lower.

But some activities may be limited. However, it’s an incredible opportunity for scenic flights , as water-based attractions (like Horizontal Falls and Mitchell Falls) will be at their fullest.

What you want to do

In the best-case scenario, it’s ideal to do a half-day or full-day trip of Broome itself.

This little town is packed with tonnes of incredible things to see and do, and you can go through most of them in one day. Plus, the history is incredibly interesting and the people are awesome!

And if you own (or rent) a 4WD, it opens up a whole set of activities for you. For example, we went 4WDing up Coconut Wells and, although we got bogged down , it was an incredible experience.

Your budget

The economy of Broome is based on tourism, so the cost of accommodation, food, and activities can quickly add up.

day trips broome to horizontal falls

There are dozens of free things to do in Broome , though. You don’t have to spend much to have an absolute blast in this town.

However, you can secure your spot with a tour company offering a “ reserve now & pay later” modality, where you pay even a few days before the experience.

Most Broome tours included above have this, allowing you to plan ahead and save up for that once-in-a-lifetime experience you want!

Quick (and awesome) Broome Tours

An underrated option is stringing a few brief tours together for a customized experience. If you want to do this, here are some activities we’d suggest including in your itinerary:

  • Camel ride on a sunset : This is the quintessential Broome experience. They usually last 1 hour and the experience is surreal. Learn more here .
  • Broome trike tours : A trike is a 3-wheeled motorcycle. It’s a fun and uncommon way to enjoy Broome! Learn more here .
  • 3-in-1 tour : Visit Matso’s Brewery, the Broome History Museum, and the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park in one afternoon. Learn more here .
  • Cygnet Bay pearl farm tour : Learn the history of the pearling industry in Broome and how pearls are cultivated in this 1-hour tour. Learn more here .

Mobile reception can be patchy outside of Broome Township – keep this in mind if you’ll travel without a tour operator.

We can’t stress this enough – book ahead of time. Broome attracts thousands of tourists per year, so make sure to reserve your spot and not miss out on any activities you want to do.

Did you know?

David Attenborough, the legendary naturalist, is reputed to have coined the name “Horizontal Falls”. He described this incredible phenomenon as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world” and he wasn’t wrong.

These seemingly horizontal waterfalls are formed as the giant tide flows between two narrow gorges of the McLarty Ranges in Talbot Bay.

Can you get around Broome without a car?

Yes, you can get around Broome without a car. The Broome Explorer bus has stops near all major accommodations and will take you anywhere in the township – Chinatown, Town Beach, Cable Beach, Gantheaume Point, etc. Here’s their website .

day trips broome to horizontal falls

How many days is enough in Broome?

3 to 4 days in Broome is enough for most people. You can see the main attractions in one day or two, but it would be very hectic.

This is also a unique spot with corners to explore off the beaten path in James Price Point and the Dampier Peninsula. If you want to do that too, then we’d recommend 5-7 days in Broome.

Can you swim in the ocean in Broome?

Yes, you can swim in the ocean in Broome! Just pay attention to signage, as it will alert you of stingers depending on the season.

Also, keep in mind that this coast has very strong tides. Familiarize yourself with Broome’s tide tables .

Finally, some beaches are not patrolled, like Gantheaume Point – be extra careful around those areas.

The bottom line

Broome offers everything – breathtaking landscapes, engaging cultural experiences, and a laid-back beach getaway. Its blend of natural wonders, cultural heritage, and relaxed charm make it a truly compelling destination worth exploring.

It’s one of Western Australia’s pearls (pun intended) and for a reason. The best part is that it can be fully enjoyed at your own pace, with tours, or both!
