Dave Grohl Reunites With Nirvana Members For Special Performance
By Tim Chan
The surviving members of Nirvana reunited in Los Angeles Saturday for a special one-night-only performance as Dave Grohl was joined by Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear at the 2020 Art of Elysium Gala, an annual fundraiser that connects artists with children and communities in need.
Playing before an enraptured crowd at the Hollywood Palladium that included everyone from Billy Idol to Bella Hadid, the three tore through a five-song set of Nirvana’s hits, with Beck, St. Vincent and Violet Grohl (Dave’s 13-year-old daughter) taking over lead vocals from the late Kurt Cobain. The event marked the first time the trio has played together since October 2018, when Novoselic joined Grohl and Smear onstage for a six-song encore during the Foo Fighters’ set at Cal Jam.
On Saturday, St. Vincent kicked off the show with “Lithium,” the same song she performed at Nirvana’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2014.
Beck took the mic next to sing “In Bloom,” with Grohl and Clark on background vocals, then introduced “Been a Son” as the song that put him in “the most insane mosh pit [at the Palladium]” when Nirvana played the iconic Sunset Boulevard venue almost three decades earlier.

Grohl stayed behind the drum kit for the entire set and didn’t speak much, though Novoselic did thank the crowd for coming and asked for, “A cheer for Kurt Cobain” (the audience responded enthusiastically). As for what brought the band back together: “We couldn’t resist the temptation,” Novoselic said.
When Grohl finally took the mic, it was to introduce his daughter, Violet, who joined the group on stage to perform “Heart-Shaped Box.” The teenager quickly won over the crowd with her steely disposition and angsty rendition of the track, which was first released in 1993, a full 13 years before she was born.

The set finished with the group performing David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World,” famously covered by Cobain for Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in New York .
Other performers at Saturday’s fundraiser included Cheap Trick, L7 and Marilyn Manson, who was accompanied by Shooter Jennings and Linda Perry for “The Dope Show” and the crowd-pleasing, “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”. On the red carpet, Manson said he was excited to be on the same bill as Grohl and company. “I saw Nirvana play with Jane’s Addiction in Miami when they were on the ‘In Utero’ tour,” he recalled, “and the guys have always been nice to me. I sadly never got to meet Kurt [before he died],” he continued, “but I’m friends with Courtney… tentatively,” he added with a smirk.
Other guests, from Moby to X Ambassadors all praised the impact of Nirvana not only on popular music, but on their own careers as well.
Editor’s picks
The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
“The first time you hear Kurt Cobain’s voice you can’t help but connect to it,” said X Ambassadors’ lead singer Sam Harris. “It’s just got this visceral, powerful feeling that you want to emulate.”
“When I was 13, Dave [Grohl] married a close family friend of mine and gave me my first drum set,” added drummer Adam Levin. “You can’t even put into words how incredible his career is; he’s been such an inspiration.”
As for Moby, he credits Nirvana — and a couple ex-roommates — for getting him into rock. “I wasn’t cool, but when I lived in New York in the late 80s and early 90s, I had roommates who were these really cool indie rockers that would play My Bloody Valentine and Nirvana and all that super obscure indie rock of the late 80s,” he explained, adding, “I never met Kurt, but I’m friends with Krist and Dave, which makes it so exciting to see them play together again.”
This was the 13th year of The Art of Elysium’s “Heaven” gala. This year’s theme was “HEAVEN is Rock and Roll,” a theme curated by event partners, WE ARE HEAR, the publishing firm-slash-management and production agency founded by songwriter Linda Perry and music producer Kerry Brown. Proceeds from the evening go toward supporting The Art of Elysium’s roster of programs that pair volunteer artists with communities or individuals in the midst of physical, social, emotional or mental upheaval.

‘Kurt was not in a good way’: backstage on Nirvana’s first – and only - Australian tour
Promoter Stephen ‘Pav’ Pavlovic spent weeks on tour with bands like Nirvana and Hole in the 1990s. ‘I hoarded everything,’ he says – and a new exhibition reveals all
- Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email
Nirvana’s first – and only – Australian tour is the stuff of legend. But the story of how it came to be is delightfully quaint.
In 1991, music promoter Stephen “Pav” Pavlovic, then in his 20s and booking bands for Sydney’s Lansdowne hotel, had just toured US rock group Mudhoney. They told him that their friends Nirvana were keen to play shows in Australia, passing on the phone numbers of Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic.
“So I just called up Kurt and Krist and said ‘Hey, my name’s Pav, do you want to come tour here?’” Pavlovic recalls. “They said, we’d love to come, we’re just busy making this record … And as it turns out, that record was Nevermind.”
A year later, Nirvana made good on their plans. But in that time, the world had shifted dramatically for the trio. Their song Smells Like Teen Spirit propelled them from a relatively small-time Seattle band to global superstars. Every other promoter in the country tried to book them, but Nirvana stuck with the scrappy young guy who had called before anyone else.
They also stuck with the small venues they had originally locked in; at undersized spaces such as ANU Bar in Canberra, mammoth crowds loitered outside until “skaters smashed all these windows and people started piling in through the side”, Pavlovic remembers. He drove the band from show to show in his van, and took them on sightseeing excursions including a camping trip to the south coast, where they slept on the beach, drank beer, and made toasted sandwiches with jaffle irons.
Photos, footage and oral accounts of that now-fabled tour – including the camping trip – are on display at Unpopular, a new exhibition at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. Pavlovic would go on to become one of Australian music’s most influential figures, later founding the label Modular Records, home of indie sleaze-defining acts such as Cut Copy, the Presets, Van She and Bag Raiders – but Unpopular charts the earlier years: the “secret society” of alternative bands in the 1990s rock scene, captured from Pavlovic’s insider vantage point. The promoter would spend weeks at a time escorting bands around the country, becoming tight friends with them along the way.
Scrapbooks and tour diaries he kept at the time are on display at the Powerhouse, as are postcards and letters sent by his musician mates, such as Superchunk’s Laura Ballance or the Lemonheads’ Jesse Peretz, after they’d left. Photos lifted from Pavlovic’s own albums feature heavily – a tender snap of Dave Grohl shivering on the sand after an ocean swim; a double-exposed photograph of Cobain sitting and smiling.
There are also gig posters, fanzines, live photos and footage of some of the shows, including video of Nirvana’s debut Australian performance at the 1,000-capacity Phoenician Club in Sydney in 1992. (A special “Nirvana room” in the museum has been covered with that quintessentially dank, patterned pub carpet, to really transport the visitor.) While most came direct from Pavlovic’s overstuffed storage unit – including unreleased demos sent by friends like Evan Dando, which can be listened to through headphones – some are on loan, such as a guitar that belonged to Cobain, and Polaroids taken by his then girlfriend.
The exhibition has taken two-and-a-half years to put together. The initial plan was to cover the entirety of Pavlovic’s career, from the early 90s to his reign at Modular Records. But when there proved to be too much stuff, a decision was made to split the exhibition in two. (The Modular-era exhibition will come at some stage in the future, as will a book from Pavlovic.)
Pavlovic says it has been cathartic to revisit and catalogue this chapter of his life. “I hoarded everything,” he says. “And who would have thought that 30 years later people would want to see it?”
More than 200 items are on display in Unpopular – but here are four of Pavlovic’s favourites.
Nirvana’s airline tickets – and the Perth fan petition
Much of the exhibition is composed of physical objects – including Kurt, Kris and Dave’s plane tickets to Australia, from the days when those were hard copy. Also part of the collection is a handwritten petition from fans protesting against the cancellation of Nirvana’s Perth show, along with passionate messages voicing their displeasure (one reads, simply, “ASSHOLE”).
“I love how tactile things were,” Pavlovic says. “The way people used to communicate stuff was so hands-on and raw. I just found it really fascinating that people would … be so upset when their favourite band didn’t come to be motivated to write a petition.”
The Perth date was cancelled because of Cobain’s ailing health, Pavlovic remembers. “Kurt was not in a good way physically – he was struggling with his addictions and travelling. He had a lot of health issues, whether they were a result of his drug use or his lifestyle, but he was not well. And it was getting to a point where we were going to have to make a decision about whether to cancel the whole tour.
“I thought, ‘What about if we just cancel this one show, take a couple of days to regroup and I’ll see if I can get you some doctors to try and help you?’ He sort of came back around and we were able to move on. But if we hadn’t cancelled that one show, then I don’t know if we would have made it through the whole [tour].”
An interview with Dave Grohl
Visitors can listen to a series of audio interviews conducted for the exhibition between Pavlovic and music greats including Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and the Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock. But Pavlovic’s favourite chat was with Grohl, of Nirvana and later Foo Fighters fame.
They spoke about the punk rock scene of Washington DC that Grohl came up in and the early days of his career, where he would stay in “squats” while touring through Europe, as well as his breakneck transition to global fame with Nirvana.
after newsletter promotion
“He talks very openly. He’s a very articulate man and he’s got a super incredible memory,” Pavlovic says. “He’s such a wonderful guy and the way he talks and tells stories is pretty engaging.”
Hole’s holiday photos
Pavlovic and his then girlfriend were both keen photographers, and their personal snaps from the 1990s feature heavily in the collection. They are photos of Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney and more on holiday in Australia between shows – “just hanging out on beaches and doing things you don’t normally see [artists] doing, like changing tyres on cars when the van breaks down”.
Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur has also loaned some of her personal photographs.
“She takes a lot of photos and documented every tour she’s ever done … so we can see it all from Hole’s perspective with her and Courtney [Love].”
“Not just another live photo of a band, right? Or not another photo of them on stage,” Pavlovic says. “We’ve got all that stuff [too]. But it’s nice to see a different side of it.”
Summersault festival footage
In 1995, Pavlovic staged a touring festival called Summersault – never-before-seen footage from which plays on large screens at the Powerhouse.
Summersault came about after Pavlovic fell out with the founders of the Big Day Out, whom he’d been supplying bands to.
“I found the music [at Big Day Out] was all over the place and a lot of stuff I didn’t like. So I thought, I’d rather do something that is laser-focused towards this community that we’re part of,” he says. “I reached out to the Beasties and they were into it; Mike asked Kathleen Hanna [of Bikini Kill], ‘Would you come and play?’ The bands called each other, and we decided we’ll do our own event. Fuck the Big Day Out.”
But Pavlovic “lost a bunch of money on it” and Summersault never returned. That 1995 event also marked the beginning of the end of his career as a promoter, as he began to lose interest in touring bands.
A few years later Pavlovic founded Modular, which he found “way more fulfilling creatively”. But for the photos and tchotchkes from that era of Australian music, we’ll have to wait a while longer.
Unpopular opens at the Powerhouse Museum on Thursday; entry is free.

Krist Novoselic Discusses Possibility Of Nirvana Hologram Tour
By Katrina Nattress
September 27, 2023
Hologram performances have been all the rage since ABBA 's Voyage "reunion" launched in 2022, so could Nirvana fans ever see Kurt Cobain brought back to life for a run of shows? According to Krist Novoselic , it's not an impossibility.
“You never know!” the bassist admitted with a laugh when asked during an interview with MOJO . “I’ll say ‘no way’, then it’s like, ‘How much?? When do we start?!’”
The topic came up during a conversation about In Utero turning 30. The anniversary box set, which drops October 27, includes two previously unreleased live recordings of complete concerts from Los Angeles Great Western Forum (December 30, 1993) and Seattle Center Arena (January 7, 1994), plus six bonus live tracks from tour.
“The shows rock," Novoselic proclaimed.
“They need to be heard,” he continued. “Now with the AI, you can take a stereo mix and then break it down into a multitrack. So you can get really good mixes. They sound raw. And you get Kurt up there who’s just carrying the show. Amazing.”
Last week, Novoselic predicted what he thought the future of Nirvana would've been if Cobain hadn't died. “I don’t know. We recorded our last song together ‘You Know You’re Right’, and that was Nirvana,” he said. “It had our whole thing as a jam then a crescendo that builds to come back down with a big chorus. It’s a really hard one to answer. Dave [Grohl] went on to do Foo Fighters , he’s successful and carrying the torch. I’ve got another band called Third Secret with Matt [Cameron] and Kim [Thayil] from Soundgarden – we’re kind of like the grunge ABBA."
“If only Kurt would have hung in there, then we would have known," Novoselic lamented. "Just to have him in the world would make a huge difference, and that’s all that really matters. I miss the guy, so I can only dream.”

The Truth About Nirvana's Final Tour
During the final stages, Kurt wasn't himself.
Nirvana's legacy will never die.
And, no, we're not talking about the fact that the band's posters are printed on t-shirts all over the world. Half the people who wear them can't recognize a single Nirvana song .
We say that Nirvana will never die because their music was just that impactful. Not only do fans all over the world still listen to all of their best songs , but other celebrities still do versions of their music .
Had Kurt Cobain not left us early, the band would likely still be going. Alas, in 1994, the band set out on their final tour. According to Esquire , this tour was rocked by Kurt's impending death. Let's take a look...
Kurt's Self-Destruction Traveled With The Band Throughout Europe
In January 1994, Nirvana got together to work in the studio. By this time, Kurt's impact on the band was already twiddling. While bandmembers Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic were laying down good tracks, Kurt was too busy moving. However, Kurt still had an influence on the band and therefore there didn't seem to be an end in sight. And yet, the tour that started the next month would be the downward spiral that resulted in Kurt's tragic demise by April of 1994.
"I was struck by [Dave] Grohl's songs and the demos we made that week," producer and engineer Adam Kasper told Esquire of the week leading up to the tour. "At the time I offhandedly made the remark that he should do a solo album someday . . . There was talk of the guys wanting a chance to include some of their songs on the new album work. Cobain listened to a few tracks and it seemed he was open to considering other material, but not much time or energy was spent on this."

As Nirvana left the States for Portugal and their first European shows of 1994, there was still musical cohesion between Kurt Cobain, Dave, Krist, and Pat Smear. However, Kurt was becoming increasingly moody. His bandmates were used to his rollercoaster moods, which also included shyness and sullenness, according to Esquire, and therefore didn't think something was overly wrong with him.
The same was true for Kurt's excessive drug use. For the past three years, he had fallen deeper and deeper into the clutches of addiction. Kurt's bandmates put up with everything, although spent little time with him outside of their gigs. But the gigs themselves were strong and their chemistry was undeniable. By the beginning of March, however, things started to take a darker turn on the tour. Their sets felt repetitive and Kurt complained of being ill with 'boredom and being old'.

The Final Days Of Kurt Cobain And Nirvana
"There was some kind of destructive logic in [Kurt] at the time," Kurt's friend and photographer Youri Lenquette explained to Esquire. "He believed the people around him didn't like him—which totally wasn't the case! From being on tour with Nirvana, seeing how they acted with him, they were really good people . . . The fact that he couldn't connect to these people anymore was a sign of depression."
On top of this, Kurt started to look as sick as he claimed. The drugs were sucking the life out of him and it began to be apparent to everyone around him. In fact, in the Esquire article, someone described him as a 'walking ghost'.
The band itself was clearly feeling as though their days were coming to an end. In part because of Kurt's state and also because the music just didn't quite feel as though it was coming together. In fact, during their final concert in Germany, the power went out during their set. This sparked Krist to go up on stage and claim that their genre of music was over and that Nirvana was dead.
The power eventually came back on and the band finished their set, albeit without "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which Kurt hated singing and would often omit or purposefully play badly.
Upon moving on to Rome, Kurt overdosed. The events in Italy would cause him to fly back to the States and check into a rehabilitation center there. However, Kurt only lasted a day there before returning to his Seattle home. This is where, just weeks after the tour began, Kurt took his own life.

A lot has been said about Kurt Cobain's passing, including stories about his conflicts with Courtney Love, unfounded conspiracy theories about his murder, and how this event is what ended Nirvana forever. All of that aside, the most important thing is that this outlandishly influential and beloved musical talent fell victim to his dwindling mental health.

About Nirvana
Nirvāṇa ( neer- VAH -nə , -VAN-ə , / n ɜːr -/ nur- ;Sanskrit: निर्वाण nirvāṇa [nɪɽʋaːɳɐ] ; Pali: निब्बान nibbāna ; Prakrit languages: णिव्वाण ṇivvāṇa , literally "blown out", as in an oil lamp ) is commonly associated with Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism and represents its ultimate state of soteriological release, the liberation from repeated rebirth in saṃsāra . [web 1]
In Indian religions, nirvana is synonymous with moksha and mukti . All Indian religions assert it to be a state of perfect quietude, freedom, highest happiness as well as the liberation from or ending of samsara , the repeating cycle of birth, life and death. However, non-Buddhist and Buddhist traditions describe these terms for liberation differently. In Hindu philosophy, it is the union of or the realization of the identity of Atman with Brahman, depending on the Hindu tradition. In Jainism, nirvana is also the soteriological goal, representing the release of a soul from karmic bondage and samsara. In the Buddhist context, nirvana refers to realization of non-self and emptiness, marking the end of rebirth by stilling the fires that keep the process of rebirth going.
