Daintree Rainforest

Disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with Mother Nature when you explore the ancient Daintree Rainforest.

The Daintree Rainforest is a breathtaking natural marvel estimated to be around 135 million years old, the oldest living rainforest on earth, surpassing even the Amazon when it comes to seniority. It is also the only place in the world where two World Heritage-listed sites meet, the rainforest and the reef . When you visit this area, the land of the Yalanji people, you will be inspired by the diversity of the flora and fauna and marvel at the distinct landscapes that have been in existence since Australia was still part of Gondwana.

Spanning over 17,000ha (that’s roughly 162 Sydney Harbours), the Daintree Rainforest is the most unique ecosystem in the world. Meander along Daintree Rainforest boardwalks, eyes peeled to glimpse a southern cassowary and his chicks. Be dwarfed by king ferns, cruise the river for prehistoric crocodiles. Join a Daintree Rainforest tour and learn about the rich biological diversity and evolutionary history as you venture deep into the forest.

Seek out adventure in secret swimming holes and ride or hike your way through the Daintree Rainforest by day, then relax in luxury in your off-grid rainforest retreat by night.

It’s a jungle out there! When it comes to planning the perfect Daintree Rainforest holiday, it's easy to get lost in where to start. Sign up to our newsletter here for all the up-to-date local information and holiday deals in the Daintree.

Daintree Rainforest Day Trips From Cairns

daintree rainforest tour

A very beauitful and special part of the world, the Daintree is certainly not to be missed. This remote area is situated 111kms north of Cairns and has the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest on the Australian continent. Along the coastline north of the Daintree River, the tropical rainforest grows right down to the edge of the sea where fringing reef is met on the shoreline, this is commonly referred to as 'where the Rainforest meets the Reef'.`

Getting there is all part of the adventure. The journey to the Daintree travels along the Cook Highway north of Port Douglas and features beautiful scenery ranging from secluded palm fringed tropical beaches, hidden coves and rugged headlands to the rich green of lush sugar-cane fields and rainforest covered mountains.

The Daintree River ferry is the gateway to the Daintree Coast and Cape Tribulation, and is the only cable ferry operating within tropical Australia. Once over the river there are many natural attractions to visit including rainforest walks, freshwater swimming holes and remote beaches.

There are also plenty of adventure activities that take place such as sea kayaking, horse riding, jungle surfing, snorkelling, night walks and more. Guided tours depart daily from Cairns.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Visting a national park.

The Daintree Rainforest is one of the most special on the planet so it is important that it is protected. Only walk on designated tracks or boardwalks, drive slowly and watch for wildlife, take home rubbish including food scraps, watch out for stinging plants and check yourself for ticks and leeches if you have been walking through the forest.

What to Bring

It is highly recommended visitors wear closed in, secure footwear when visiting the Daintree as well as bring a good supply of water, sunscreen, a change of clothes, any vital medications, camera and phone. There is not a lot of phone reception, so where possible it is recommended to travel with someone.

Special Assistance

The Discovery Centre offers full accessibility to its Daintree Café, Aerial Walkway and Interpretive Centre. Due to natural variations in the terrain, the lower level boards and walkways may not be accessible to all visitors using mobility devices.

An outdoor lover's guide to Cairns

White-water rafting, epic hikes, and endless waterfalls await..

Ulrike Lemmin-Woolfrey

When I was asked to write a travel guidebook covering most of coastal Queensland as well as the Great Barrier Reef , I jumped at the chance to explore this northern state. I spent many happy weeks roaming the coastal paths, the countryside, the many natural wonders, enjoying the amazing outdoor experiences to be had in this tropical region.

Queensland, Australia’s second largest state, quickly became my top choice for outdoor enthusiasts for its huge variety of experiences. There is such a wide array of natural landscapes perfect for scuba diving, wild-water rafting, endless hikes, bird watching, and, surprisingly, the world’s oldest rainforest. Using Cairns as your home base, here are a few ways to get outside in Queensland.

Channel your inner Crocodile Dundee in Daintree

Tourist at Mossman gorge national park in far north Queensland

The Daintree River, which marks the entry point to the Daintree Rainforest, looks much the same today as it did millions of years ago (the forest itself is some 180 million years old, making it the oldest in the world), with similar creatures in the waters now as there were then. The prehistoric crocodiles are everywhere in the river—you can see them sunning themselves on the river’s beaches or lazily swimming in the waters, and they’re best appreciated from the safety of a guided boat tour .

Tip : You can also spot crocodiles from the small car ferry crossing the river, and even the Skyway Rainforest Cableway that takes you across the mountains to the village of Kuranda .

Find Nemo at the Great Barrier Reef

Overlooking view of the Norman reef in Great barrier Reef, Cairns, Australia

A visit to Queensland isn’t complete without seeing the Great Barrier Reef. From Cairns , many of the reef islands are quite far out, taking time and a huge investment to get to. But Green Island sits within easy reach of Cairns. A full-day tour (available through Great Adventures ) will take you first to Green Island, where you’ll have access to a pool, several restaurants, and everything from scuba diving to snorkeling—plus the fun Seawalker dive , where you get to experience the sea floor without needing diving experience—for a few hours. Then you’ll transfer to the Outer Reef Platform for an extra three hours of snorkeling fun on the fringe of the Great Barrier Reef.

Tip : For an extra thrill, book a helicopter flight to get a bird’s eye view of the reef and spot migrating whales along the coast.

Get splashed in the Northern Queensland rivers

Whitewater rafting on Tully River

You could take a day trip to the artsy village of Kuranda , on the fringes of Cairns, to see Barron Falls , an imposing cascade in the Blue Mountains. But you can (and should) get much closer to the water than a viewing platform. Barron River wild-water rafting takes you through the rapids as the river flows through the serene Atherton Tablelands before making its way to the mountainous gorge near Cairns. Along the way you’ll get a close-up look at the surrounding dense forest, which is full of colorful birds and other local wildlife.

The Barron River is thrilling to raft and you’ll get plenty of squeals from your group, but for something a touch more adventurous, try the Tully River rafting excursion, which is slightly longer and with more rapids but still fine for the entire family.

Tip : Bring your own shoes to get wet as you are not allowed to go barefoot. Otherwise, you will be asked to rent a pair at an extra cost.

Shout from the top of Mount Bartle Frere

Mount Bartle Frere, Queensland's tallest mountain

Cairns is the perfect entry point to the Blue Mountains , with access to Barron River, endless hiking trails through the forests of Wooroonooran National Park , and the chance to hike Queensland’s highest peak, Mount Bartle Frere , which reaches an elevation of more than 5,000 feet.

Head out on the 10-mile Bartle Frere trail to the mountain’s summit or the shorter Broken Nose trail , some six miles long, which offers stellar views. Note: Most trails up here are challenging and should not be underestimated. Slippery terrain, leeches, and tropical humidity make this more than your average mountain hike, even if the elevation may not initially sound that demanding.

Tip : If you’re looking for a more manageable route, tackle the family-friendly, one-mile Josephine Falls trail to see the tiered waterfall up close.

Chasing waterfalls in Babinda

Devil's Pool (Babinda Boulders), Babinda Creek, Far North Queensland, Australia

Part of Wooroonooran National Park, the Babinda Boulders area is magical and mystical, with several waterfalls and those Seychelles-like smooth boulders. The name Babinda comes from the indigenous Wanyurr Yidinji language, with Bunna binda meaning “water passing over your shoulder,” reportedly referring to the sensually rounded rocks.

Less than an hour’s drive south of Cairns, take a right at the tiny blue tourist information hut. From the designated car park, there are several trails to follow, each more scenic than the next. Beware, this place is famous as the wettest spot in Australia and can be dangerously slippery. As the river’s seemingly serene pools are filled with undercurrents, please be cautious when taking a dip.

Tip : Stop either before or after your boulder adventure at the Babinda Bakery , which is just as famous as the boulders, to stock up on picnic goodies. The pies, especially the daily specials (try the curry pie), are superb.

Far North Queensland tour operators wait to reopen after ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper flooded Barron River

Warren Clinton stands on a muddy riverbank where his jetty and pontoon once stood.

He recounts his recent tribulations while they are still fresh in his mind but is frequently interrupted by the sound of his mobile phone ringing.

Each caller wants to take the riverboat tour of the mighty Barron River in Far North Queensland's rainforest mountain village of Kuranda.

Each time, Mr Clinton disappoints his caller — he does not know when he will be able to get back on the water.

"It's been very mentally draining, that's the most difficult part of it," he said.

Man in blue shirt, denim shots, woman in dark shorts, printed top, stand arm in arm on a riverbank, looking away seriously.

Operators still waiting

More than three months have passed since the ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper caused Barron's largest flood in more than a century.

Far North Queensland is heavily reliant on the tourist dollar, with one in five people employed in the industry, according to Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

But some tourism operators, including Warren and Melissa Clinton, are still not back on their feet.

An aerial image of a bridge over a flooded river full of muddy water, greenery on either side.

The business owners managed to save their boat from destruction in the flood, but the sheer deluge of water washed away their pontoon and a nearby weir.

"I've blocked out [tours] on our online booking system into May," Ms Clinton said.

"Because it's just taking so long and the weather is against you, getting the riverbank fixed and the weir fixed."

Peak season approaching

Governments have been encouraging tourists to go to far north Queensland ever since tropical cyclone Jasper struck in December, with discounted flights and accommodation packages .

Almost a three-hour drive north of Cairns is Cape Tribulation, a spot world famous for being the juncture of the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.

A small river jetty and pontoon with a moored covered tour boat, red flags, greenery.

Businesses there only opened to visitors in March for the first time since December, in time for the Easter weekend.

Café owner Lawrence Mason could not hide his relief at being able to work again.

But he is realistic about the "massive amount of repair work" still to be done on the road into his northern community.

A $10 million grant program to rebuild infrastructure will close mid-April.

Applicants are also waiting to find out whether they will receive a share of money set aside to support those who've lost income.

Tourism Minister Michael Healy said he hoped to advise all 119 applications of the outcome "in coming days".

Wildlife recovering

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Mark Olsen said it had been a "very stressful time".

"This is typically the launch pad for our main season but many of these businesses are coming in with very little cash flow," he said.

"So, we're hoping that in the next couple of days, we start to see those grant announcements coming through."

A riverboat cruises a wide river, viewed from above.

The Clintons expect it wil be at least five or six weeks before they can show people the wonders of the Barron again.

The visitors who make it there will see a very different landscape but the wildlife has shown signs of recovery.

"It's sort of helped clean the river, bring it back to its original wild state, I think," Mr Clinton said.

"The wildlife has been here longer than us, so they're used to this river flooding.

"It's amazing every year we go back after a flood, and the same fish are still there and the same crocodiles are still there."

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle.
