Seating details

1. There's no good combination of seats for a couple traveling together. 2. If you're tall or wide, this will be an uncomfortable seat. I'm 5'10/normal build and my feet were bumping against the bulkhead when the seat was reclined. And the seat was a bit constraining. Frankly, I was disappointed with the experience on this aircraft in Business.

This Airbus had PE and Economy only between YUL and DUB, it was acquired from another airline with the older Business Class lie flat seats left in PE, that will be changed by Nov 2019 to the regular PE seats like Boeing 737 Max 8 has, the outbound flight was a great value and quite comfortable, inbound seat 2A had no working audio or TV as remote control was ripped out of the armrest, 2 C had dead seat controls. Note that Staff were attentive and food was excellent. Airbus has a quiet interior. New configuration in PE will be similar to Boeing 737 Max 8 and 787-8.

There is no power at these seats (35A/C). Same actually for 35H/K.

Love the 2-4-2 configuration, middle of 3 is a nightmare! Good comfortable flight with Air Canada.

The video screen is on one of the seats in row in front and is not in direct line of sight, making it awkward to watch.

The video screen is on one of the seats in row in front and is not in direct line of sight, making it awkward to watch. The arm rest between 47E and 47F is fixed, which makes it a problem for those that plan to have e.g. a child lying across the seats.

First, This is the best seat configuration for the benefit of customer satisfaction. 2-4-2 seating with two sets of two washrooms. (economy class) in my opinion as a frequent international traveler. Comfortable fabric seats with limited but adequate reclining feature. Full flight with very efficient, considerate service. Adequate pitch and leg room for average person size.

We found the seats comfortable with great room. The pitch of the seat was great since no one was behind you when you reclined. There was a foot bar to rest your feet on. The screen did not work on our 10 hour flight for seat 14H

This is a horrible seat. Worst than economy. Rows 13 and 14 have way more leg room. It’s complete ripoff to call this premium economy. Shame on you Air Canada!!!

first of all the configuration of the suite is totally awkward on takeoff and landing . Please know that all the seats in the first row have NO WONDOW. Seats are very narrow IMO .... the walls around the seat make you feel wedged in and I am not a big person. (5"7, 150lbs) I would avoid flying on this plane next time ...it feels OLD and dated.

Excellent Air Canada Signature Suite Seat which benefit from an important height given the absence of overheadlockers in the central row. Plenty of spaces for personal belongings.

Great seats nice leg room

Old plane with old entertainment. Why they would fly an A330 from Montréal to Toronto, I have no idea

I flew on Air Canada's A333 from Brussels to Montreal and paid for the exit row. I was a little worried about the door taking away space but once I sat in the seat I must admit this is probably better than premium economy. I am 6'6" and had LOTS of room, will definitely buy this seat again.

12D should be marked in red. There is no leg room at all - much better to fly economy and have more leg room.

These seats on row 18, they do not have extra legroom, only extra knee room. you can not stretch your legs as you can on the ordinary seats. It is still very comfortable, but be aware of this in case you pay for this seat.

The USB port is poor. Very difficult to position the plug in the socket to get a constant power supply.

A lot more room then all other seats. (Shoulders) you have a lot more personal space. In my opinion, this seat should be marked green. Just as 9k. Very low or no noise from the galley. Only negative, you have no window, however, you can watch over your shouler and look outside of the window of seat 8. But, how the seats are put in the cabin, you actually never watch outside.

Premium Economy. Very nice leg room, great views of the Rockies from the window. I'm 6'2 230lbs and could cross my legs without issue. Great recline too (17.8 cm/7 in).

The window alignment for this seat is off, making it impossible to look out the window without straining your neck. In addition, the aircraft is very ssted and the pocket on the seat in front (on 18A) is broken creatung friction between your knee and the seat in front. Avoid this seat entirely.

Could be nicer trip

The planning was nice, a bit short in terms of duration but... Hotels/resorts, except the one in Kauai, are very old they need urgent remodeling, the space is good and big, but the conditions of the bathrooms are really last century. I planned this trip with a lot of months in advance and I got a lot of calls about changing the agreed program, I though I had chosen a few things that turned out not to be scheduled, but I don't remember well and there is nothing on the emails, so it is a bit expensive without those things I missed. I would ask for these things to be addressed over email as well so there is a record. I hope other people have better experiences.

Michelle Sibbel did a great job!

Michelle Sibbel did a great job! We have made a rental car trip through Southern and N Island of New Sealand during 26 days. We drove 4500km, we have seen a lot and all 12 hotels were in the centres of the cities. Everything went 100% well. Also the roadbook of 137 pages! Again, thanks a lot Michelle! Fam. Ottervanger

Contacted them for an Egypt holiday…

Contacted them for an Egypt holiday just one month in advance. Despite high season and short notice they arranged two alternatives we could choose form. After our decision, flights and hotels were arranged quickly and efficiently. Top experience.

They left us hanging and though we…

They left us hanging and thought we booked a superior individual trip. The most hotels were totally inadequate! At one of them constructionwork was going on and the rooms were lowbudget and outdated in another hotel in Bocas del toro the hotel was completely in decay! When we tried to contact them they couldn’t be reached and when we finally did reach them they left us hanging and did nothing to help us or to compensate us. Spend your money somewhere else!! As an answer to their answer: you never even tried!!! Again we have written you every day of our stay in Costa Rica and youronly answer was despite the pictures and videos that according to your agent everything was as we should have expected! So far I’ve been polite and didn’t post any pictures on Facebook/instagram because I thought i’ld give you a fair change to sort this out! But I think you’ve just past a threshold!

Beste Monica.

12 Lululemon ‘We Made Too Much Section’ Finds I Wish Were Already in My Suitcase — From $19

Find out what one travel writer is eyeing.

333 travel canada

Travel + Leisure / Marcus Millan

As a longtime health and fitness writer, I’ve had the privilege of testing out a wide spectrum of activewear — and Lululemon continues to prevail as one of my favorites. But my reverence didn’t begin once I started my career; I’ve been a fan of Lululemon ever since high school (when they were still pretty new to the U.S. market). I remember saving all of my pennies to buy one of their “I <3 Running” water bottles (which perfectly captured my cross-country athlete identity at the time, duh).

Fast-forward a good 17 years, and I’ve worn the brand during so many big moments in my life: hitting personal bests in a race, taking big steps in my career, and traveling all over the world. All this to say, I’ve tested a lot of Lulu gear — from leggings to tanks to jackets, and everything in between — and honed in on my favorites from the brand. And when I'm looking to add new pieces to my wardrobe, I always check the “ We Made Too Much” section's under-the-radar curation of clothes, outerwear, and accessories. After pouring through Lululemon's current inventory, I’ve scoped out the 12 items I’m eyeing for future trips — and they're all starting at just $19.

Pleated Open-knit High-rise Tennis Skirt

It’s looking like the "tenniscore" trend is here to stay (looking at you, "Challengers" movie), and I’m here for it. For instance, I love this classic pleated tennis skirt look — both for, you know, playing tennis, and also with a cute little T-shirt and sneakers while out and about. This is the perfect travel addition if you’re headed to a resort destination this spring (or honestly, anywhere that’s warm).

Align High-rise Pants 25-inch

If you haven’t heard of the iconic Align Pants from Lululemon, allow me to introduce you. These leggings stay in place like no other, offering just the right amount of compression. The silky smooth material also feels like a second skin on your body, so you forget you’re even wearing them. But that doesn’t mean they don’t offer plenty of coverage: Even the lighter styles are expertly lined, so you can wear them during a rigorous workout or as pants while traveling, without feeling self-conscious. You can’t beat their price in the “We Made Too Much” section ($39, seriously?!), and they’re currently available in nine gorgeous colors. I also highly recommend checking out the Align Shorts , which are great for spring hikes, running errands, or sightseeing.

Everywhere Belt Bag 1-liter

Another Lulu item that’s achieved icon status at this point, the Everywhere Belt Bag is, everywhere . I’ve owned mine for almost six years now and it’s always the bag I grab before heading on a trip, a hike, a walk, or honestly anywhere I’m headed. It’s so lightweight, and yet holds a shocking amount of essentials: sunscreen, sunglasses, phone, wallet, snacks — the list goes on. This bag constantly sells out on Lululemon’s site, so I’m truly shocked it’s available in their “We Made Too Much” section.

Fast and Free High-rise Tight 25-inch

While Lululemon’s Align Pants get most of the recognition, I’m equally partial to the Fast and Free High-rise Tight. I’ve had the same pair for years, and it’s held up flawlessly throughout countless miles (both running and travel). Like the Aligns, these leggings fit like a second skin; they are buttery smooth, the perfect thickness for warmer weather, and have just the right amount of compression. And right now, you can snag these tights in the classic 25-inch style , the version with pockets (!), or even the cropped 23-inch style — all starting at $59. Now, excuse me while I stock up on all three…

Tapered-Leg Mid-rise Pant 7/8 Length Luxtreme

Lululemon may be known for leggings, but they also do pants particularly well. That includes these tapered-leg trousers, which are fantastic for travel. They’re made with one of the brand’s signature sweat-wicking and breathable fabrics, offering four-way stretch (translation: ultimate comfort). They’re available in six different versatile, neutral colors, perfect for any style or occasion.

Swiftly Tech Short-sleeve Shirt 2.0

I’m not usually a big fan of activewear T-shirts (I often find them uncomfortable or limiting), but this Tech shirt from Lululemon is one that I regularly wear. It is perfectly lightweight, breathable, and has a really nice cut — so it’s perfect for exercise or daily wear. Or, if you’re more of a sleeveless person, I swear by their tank in the same fabric (find it here for just $29 ).

Wundermost Ultra-soft Nulu High-heck Sleeveless Bodysuit

Bodysuits are great travel staples. After all, they function as a shirt, but take up virtually zero space in your luggage — and I dare you to find a comfier one than this gorgeous piece from Lululemon. It’s made with the brand’s signature Nulu fabric, which is silky smooth to the touch and feels incredible against your skin. This bodysuit, in particular, makes for a great layering piece under a button-up shirt or jacket — or it looks lovely on its own with a pair of jeans or a skirt. It’s available in three colors in the “We Made Too Much” section, but I’m partial to this elegant off-white hue.

Light Utilitech Cargo Pocket High-rise Pant

Speaking of great travel pants, I’m obsessed with these cargo pants. As always, they’re made with performance fabric to keep you cool and comfy during springtime travels. Of course, since they’re cargo pants, there are pockets, galore — but other notable features include a comfy elastic waistband, stretchy material, and a just-right high-rise fit. These must have just been added to the “We Made Too Much” section because a shocking number of sizes are still available. Each color option is stunning, but I’m about to add the java brown hue to my cart.

ABC Slim-fit 5 Pocket Pant 32-inch Length Utilitech

Lululemon also makes fantastic clothing for men — especially pants. The ABC Pants are its signature style and come in various lengths, fabrics, and cuts. They’re the perfect travel pants, As multiple reviewers confirmed, they stay wrinkle-free and feel comfortable when you're on the go. Right now, you can score the popular pants for just $69.

Hooded Mid-length Utility Jacket

Add jackets to the running list of clothing that Lululemon makes particularly well. And can we talk about this quintessential rain jacket? The oversized cut is so effortlessly cool — not to mention, incredibly functional for any spring travels. It’s water-repellent, windproof, and oh-so-easy to pack.

Zeroed In Short-sleeve Shirt

Every travel wardrobe needs a reliable t-shirt that can function in different settings. This tee is technically designed for running and training, but it’s sleek enough to wear with jeans or under a jacket. As one reviewer wrote: “It's the best shirt for workouts and everyday life.”

Women's Baller Hat Soft

No matter where I’m headed on vacation, a hat is essential on my packing list. I love Lululemon’s caps (I just ordered a new one) since they’re sweat-wicking and super comfortable throughout many hours of wear. This one comes in black or white, so it’s perfect to pair with any of your favorite travel outfits.

I’m a U.S. citizen who lives most of the year in Canada. But when I pick up coffee or purchase subway fare in my adopted city of Toronto, I often find myself habitually turning to the same few American credit cards I’ve owned and used for years.

Using my American cards while living across the border helps me maintain my U.S. credit history. Plus, I’ve found that they offer more value than comparably-priced Canadian cards.

I’m especially likely to pull out my Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card because it offers ample points without requiring me to think too hard about different rewards categories.

Instead, I earn the same unlimited 1.5 points per $1 on purchases, which is a rewards rate I’ve so far been unable to match with a no-annual-fee Canadian card.

Aren’t sure how to choose a credit card? Read our guide on how to pick the best credit card for you.

In Canada, rewards cards without annual fees are typically less generous –– especially when it comes to miscellaneous spending. For example, my CIBC Dividend® Visa* Card * The information for the CIBC Dividend® Visa* Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. offers 2% cash back on groceries, 1% cash back on eligible gas, electric vehicle charging, transportation, dining and recurring payments, 0.5% cash on everything else.

There are no foreign transaction fees on my Bank of America Travel Rewards card either. So I don’t have to sweat over 1% to 3% in foreign transaction fees that can quickly add up over multiple transactions.

However, the number one reason I turn so regularly to my Bank of America Travel Rewards card is its convenience.

After nearly 20 years of credit card experience, I’ve learned that I get more value out of low-maintenance cards that require minimal time and attention.

  • Use your card to book your trip how and where you want – you’re not limited to specific websites with blackout dates or restrictions.
  • Redeem points for a statement credit to pay for travel or dining purchases, such as flights, hotel stays, car and vacation rentals, baggage fees, and also at restaurants including takeout.

After the Intro APR offer ends, a Variable APR that’s currently 19.24% – 29.24% will apply. A 3% Intro balance transfer fee will apply for the first 60 days your account is open. After the Intro balance transfer fee offer ends, the fee for future balance transfers is 4%.
  • If you’re a Bank of America Preferred Rewards® member, you can earn 25%-75% more points on every purchase. That means instead of earning an unlimited 1.5 points for every $1, you could earn 1.87-2.62 points for every $1 you spend on purchases.
  • Contactless Cards – The security of a chip card, with the convenience of a tap.
  • This online only offer may not be available if you leave this page or if you visit a Bank of America financial center. You can take advantage of this offer when you apply now.

Even abroad, Bank of America Travel Rewards are simple to earn, fast to redeem

In my experience, the Bank of America Travel Rewards Visa is especially easy to use in Canada compared with other American cards I own since it comes equipped with contactless technology (which was popular here long before it took off in the U.S.), and Visa is widely accepted.

I rarely use my Discover it® Miles , by contrast, because I’ve struggled to find vendors in Canada who will accept it.

Since I earn the same rewards rate with every purchase on my Bank of America Travel Rewards card, I don’t have to track spending bonuses or worry about the types of foreign purchases that will qualify for a higher rate.

Even better, the rewards I earn from my Bank of America Travel Rewards card are so easy to redeem I can do it within minutes online simply by checking some boxes next to eligible travel and dining purchases. Within days, a statement credit then posts to my account.

I also can book rewards travel from whatever site I want to, and I don’t have to plan around blackout dates or other travel restrictions.

For a working mom like me who can barely carve out time to book travel, let alone spend hours searching for a suitable rewards flight, that extra layer of simplicity is important.

I also have ADHD, so navigating a complicated rewards scheme that requires lots of extra steps or tracking can sometimes feel overwhelming. Simpler rewards programs are easier for me to stick to long term and are overall a better fit for my neurodivergent brain. Plus, I’m more likely to use my rewards if they’re easy to redeem.

On the downside, the redemption options for the Bank of America Travel Rewards card are limited: to earn a 1:1 return on your rewards spending, you need to redeem your points for travel or dining.

You can trade in your points for a gift card, but your points will be worth less than a cent each. The redemption rate for cash is even stingier.

Luckily, there are plenty of purchases that count as travel and dining, including public transit and parking fees, bridge and highway tolls, tourist attractions such as aquariums and zoos, fast food, coffee shops, bars and taverns.

Bank of America also gives you up to a year to redeem your points before a qualifying purchase is no longer eligible. So you have some time to build up your rewards.

How I use American credit while living in another country

In my case, I’ve managed to seamlessly transition to living much of the year in Canada without giving up my American credit history because I still have a valid U.S. address and phone number and maintain a presence in both countries.

I also happened to own most of my credit cards well before I moved to Canada in 2018. However, I have successfully applied for new cards in the years since and had them sent to my American address.

Expats who don’t maintain a valid U.S. address may need to work with a bank or credit union that specializes in serving U.S. citizens who live or travel extensively abroad. But for me, it’s been relatively easy, and my Bank of America Travel Rewards card fits my needs perfectly.

Our next $20 bank note

On May 6, 2023, the Government of Canada announced that the next $20 bank note will continue to feature a portrait of the reigning monarch, King Charles III. Learn what we know so far, and what’s next .

At the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, the Government of Canada announced that the next $20 bank note will continue to feature a portrait of the reigning monarch.

The Minister of Finance has now also confirmed that the Canadian National Vimy Memorial will remain on the back of the note.

We’ve since started the design process for the next $20. This includes historical and visual research and talking to experts and the Bank’s Indigenous Advisory Circle .

What we know

  • The new note will be polymer, predominantly green and vertical in orientation.
  • It will feature a portrait of King Charles III on the front.
  • The back will continue to feature the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
  • Cash remains an important payment method for Canadians and the $20 is our highest circulating note. As such, we’ll be integrating new and enhanced security features to continue supplying Canadians with notes they can use with confidence.

What happens next

  • The process of designing a new bank note involves several stages: research and development, design, and production. A key element of this process is the testing of enhanced security features that are easy to check and hard to counterfeit.
  • Once the preliminary design is approved by the Minister of Finance, in accordance with the Bank of Canada Act , it is developed and tested before moving to production.
  • We’ll then unveil the new $20 note several months before it begins circulating to raise awareness and educate the public, retailers, law enforcement agencies, financial institutions and others about its design and security features.
  • We expect the new $20 note to begin circulating in early 2027. In the meantime, our current $20 note featuring Queen Elizabeth will continue to circulate.

A Boeing 787 full of passengers was stranded in Canada's deep north after a burning smell forced an emergency landing

  • An Air France plane diverted after a burning smell was detected in the cabin.
  • It landed in a remote town in the northern Canadian province of Nunavut.
  • The airline had to cancel a different flight to reroute a Boeing 777 to rescue the passengers.

Air France has been working to get passengers back on track after their plane made an emergency landing in the deep north of Canada on Tuesday.

The Boeing 787 flying from Paris to Seattle was over northern Canada when a burning smell was detected in the cabin, the airline told CBC .

The pilots declared an emergency and diverted to the nearest airport. This happened to be in Iqaluit , the capital of Canada's Nunavut territory, which has a population of less than 8,000.

Iqaluit, formerly known as Frobisher Bay, lies in the region sometimes known as the Canadian Arctic, though the city itself is just outside the true Arctic Circle.

Data from Flightradar24 shows a different plane was rerouted to rescue the passengers. The Boeing 777 was scheduled to fly from Montreal to Paris, but that flight was canceled.

Nearly 11 hours after the passengers had landed in Iqaluit, the 777 departed for New York.

CBC reported that passengers will be rerouted from New York as soon as possible. Flightradar24 shows the 777 was scheduled to fly from New York to Seattle early Wednesday morning, but this flight was canceled.

In a statement sent to the travel news site Paddle Your Own Kanoo, Air France said it "regrets the inconvenience caused by this situation and reiterates that the safety of its customers and crews is its absolute imperative."

The 787 Dreamliner is still in Iqaluit. CBC reported that it is grounded while crews investigate what caused the burning smell.

Last December, 270 Delta Air Lines passengers had to sleep overnight in a Canadian military barracks after a diversion. Two more planes landed to bring them back on course.

Canada eases travel restrictions to some Mindanao provinces

Canada has eased travel restrictions to some provinces in Mindanao, but continued to warn of lingering threat of terrorism, high levels of crime and armed clashes between rebel groups and Philippine security forces in other parts of the region.

In its updated travel advisory on May 1, Canada has delisted Camiguin and Dinagat Islands from its travel warning following review of the security status in these areas.

Meanwhile, Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental were downgraded to “Avoid non-essential travel” category after being included in the “Avoid all travel” category in January this year.

Canada has warned that travel to Basilan, Cotabato, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Maguindanao, Misamis Occidental, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay must still be avoided.

“Extremists have been active in the southern Philippines for several years,” the Canadian advisory said.

“Although local authorities have demobilized some of violent extremist groups in the recent years, there's still a risk of terrorist attacks and kidnappings, especially in the following regions: Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, Sulu archipelago.”

Security has been a major concern in Mindanao due to the proliferation of firearms and extremist groups that have engaged in kidnap for ransom activities, such as the Abu Sayyaf, which has been tagged as terrorists by the Philippines, United Nations, and the United States.

In 2016, two Canadian tourists, who were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf, were beheaded by the notorious armed group after the deadline for the payment of ransoms expired. As a policy, Canada said it does not negotiate with terrorists.

Canadians were also warned of bombs causing deaths, injuries, and property destruction that have exploded in public areas of major centers including the cities of Cotabato, General Santos, Isabela, Jolo, Kidapawan, Marawi, and Zamboanga.

Clashes may also occur between insurgent groups and security forces, it noted.

Except for Davao City and Siargao Island, Canadians were advised against “non-essential travel” to the following areas in Central and Eastern Mindanao, citing security risks: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Bukidnon, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Misamis Oriental, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.

While counterterrorism operations have diminished the capacity of terrorist groups to operate in the Philippines, Canada said “militants remain in the country even if attacks are less common.”

Should Canadians still proceed to travel in the southern Philippines despite its advisory, Canada urged them to “remain indoors as much as possible, be aware of your surroundings at all times, avoid crowded places, and always travel with identification.”

“Expect an increased security presence in public areas, especially around malls and transportation hubs, stop at security checkpoints, monitor local media, (and) follow the advice and instructions of local authorities,” the advisory said.

“There's a risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The government of Canada's ability to provide consular assistance is limited if you get stranded in this area,” it said. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Cruise worker charged with stabbing 3 with scissors on ship in Alaska

Federal officials arrested a man accused of assault with a deadly weapon after an incident on a Norwegian ship .

A 35-year-old man working for Norwegian Cruise Line was arrested in Juneau, Ala., on Tuesday after allegedly stabbing three people aboard a ship with medical scissors on Monday.

The U.S. District Attorney’s office charged Ntando Sogoni, identified as a South African national, with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. Sogoni faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, Norwegian hired Sogoni the day before the stabbing. He joined the Norwegian Encore in Seattle.

The affidavit said crew members saw Sogoni trying to deploy a lifeboat on Sunday and that security officers escorted him to a medical center for an assessment. He then “became irrational and attempted to leave.” The FBI said Sogoni attacked a security guard and a nurse before running into a room where a 75-year-old woman was being examined.

Using a pair of scissors, the affidavit said, Sogoni stabbed the woman in the arm, hand and face. Security officers intervened, and Sogoni stabbed two guards in the head and back. None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to the affidavit.

Sogoni was detained and held in a jail on the ship until it arrived at its next port in Juneau, according to the affidavit. Based on information from Norwegian security, the stabbing is estimated to have occurred at 1:50 a.m. west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Norwegian did not comment on the status of the victims or what vetting Sogoni received before beginning employment. The company told The Washington Post it is assisting authorities in the investigation.

“We condemn violent behavior of this nature and are committed to the safety and security of all crew members and guests on our ships,” Norwegian said in an email statement. “We commend the onboard security team for their brave actions.”

The company did not confirm whether the trip continued as scheduled, but online cruise trackers show the Encore in Skagway, Alaska, as of Wednesday — aligning with the cruise itinerary.

Living at sea: Travelers on a 9-month world cruise are going viral on social media. For some travelers, not even nine months was enough time on a ship; they sold cars, moved out of their homes and prepared to set sail for three years . That plan fell apart, but a 3.5-year version is waiting in the wings.

Passengers beware: It’s not all buffets and dance contests. Crime data reported by cruise lines show that the number of sex crimes has increased compared to previous years. And though man-overboard cases are rare, they are usually deadly .

The more you know: If you’re cruise-curious, here are six tips from a newcomer. Remember that in most cases, extra fees and add-ons will increase the seemingly cheap price of a sailing. And if you happen to get sick , know what to expect on board.

OTTAWA — The Israel-Hamas war has led to a spike in “violent rhetoric” from “extremist actors” that could prompt some in Canada to turn to violence, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service warns.

CSIS warns of potential violence in Canada from ’extremist actors’ over Israel-Hamas war Back to video

The statement comes as newly released documents illustrate discussions last fall among the spy agency, the federal Public Safety Department and Muslim and Jewish leaders about a reported uptick in hate crimes spurred by the conflict.

“While the long-term impacts of the current crisis cannot be easily predicted, it is clear that this conflict has raised tensions within our society,” wrote CSIS spokesman Eric Balsam. “Violent rhetoric from extremist actors has increased since the attack by Hamas and, as the conflict continues to unfold, it is possible that these events could impact certain individuals’ intent to mobilize to violence.”

The agency’s role is to monitor and identify any threats and alert the government. That doesn’t include lawful protests and dissent, which are protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Balsam added.

Documents released to The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act detail summaries of discussions federal officials had separately with Jewish and Muslim leaders about the ongoing domestic turmoil.

One such document says CSIS representatives “assured all participants that they will continue to monitor threats and to look for evidence of attacks being planned.”

The agency remains in talks with leaders from Muslim and Jewish communities to hear their concerns, Balsam said. Director David Vigneault met with the federal envoys to combat antisemitism and Islamophobia last fall, he added.

Over the course of their meetings, federal officials heard concerns from Muslim and Arab leaders about public rhetoric around the war, including what one attendee felt was “silence” from the government about how the situation in the Middle East would affect the safety of Palestinians and other Muslims living in Canada.

Concerns were also raised about free speech.

“Activists are receiving backlash, being labelled as antisemitic, and facing various consequences for shouting chants such as, ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,’ as well as calling for ‘intifada,’” the documents said.

In Arabic, intifada is a word with meanings that include shaking off oppression. In English, it is most commonly associated with two periods of particular intensity in the Israel-Palestine conflict, which included a series of attacks by Palestinian terrorist groups on public venues inside Israel.

Community leaders also told officials that activists were being “heavily surveilled” and “their right to free speech is being stifled,” the note says.

Jewish leaders along with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and others have decried examples of protesters glorifying Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack against southern Israel at demonstrations in cities across Canada.

One such incident remains under investigation by Ottawa police.

B’nai Brith Canada released an annual report on Monday documenting cases of antisemitism across the country.

Richard Robertson, the group’s director of research and advocacy, said it has never seen such high levels of antisemitic incidents happening on a daily basis, both online and in real-life acts of violence.

“The 2023 statistics make it abundantly clear when there is unrest in Israel, Jewish Canadians suffer unduly,” he said at a news conference Monday.

“The levels of antisemitism were already on the rise prior to the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict.”

The documents obtained by The Canadian Press outline how federal officials consistently heard from Jewish leaders about the need for police to take more action to stop “the hateful rhetoric expressed at rallies.” It specifically points to the use of the term “Zionist.”

“As an overwhelming majority of Jews identify as Zionists and believe in the need for a Jewish state … calls for attacks against Zionists should be seen as calls for attacks against Jews.”

The note said the RCMP was equipping its front-line members with a “tool kit” explaining the conflict’s historical context to help officers “identify signs of overt and covert hate that may be seen at protests.”

The national force also encouraged local police to pay attention to Jewish-owned businesses and schools, not just synagogues and community centres, according to a summary dated Nov. 29.

The documents also indicate Public Safety Canada would be reaching out to universities “to discuss the dampening of rising tensions and antisemitism on campuses.”

It later said it was relaying information to schools “on the current threat environment.”
