My wife and I had a wonderful week and experience in Utah! Everything was handled and we had a great trip. Our tour guide, Dave Showalter, was very knowledgeable, helpful, and patient with us throughout the trip. We were able to see and experience the 5 national parks along with some extras thrown in as well. Our small group was comfortable, friendly, and everyone contributed to us having an amazing week!

Utah Parks Circuit

I had a great time doing the Utah Parks Circuit. Despite the bad weather we could see a lot. My highlights were the Narrows in Zion and Bryce Canyon. More time in Bryce Canyon would have been nice. Campgrounds were remote but all had nice restrooms with showers.

Hiking Utah's Mighty 5

Tour itinerary was well planned in order to see and hike Utah’s Big 5 National parks in 9 days. Our guide Rachel was excellent and did her best to manage 12 clients, drive, buy food, supervise food preparations and clean up, and break camp. However, given the amount of organization needed for camping, meals and driving required; and overseeing the often difficult and strenuous hikes, it would have been a better trip if there were 2 guides instead of only one. This trip went very well because we were an older group with many professionals with administration experience who pitched in to help the trip go smoothly. If a group on this tour does not blend as well as we did, don’t pitch in to do their share of work, and/or do not have experience working as a-team with administration experience, it may not go so well or more likely be a disaster. To avoid this, better to have 2 guides.

This was my first time going on a group tour. I was a little concerned that traveling with a group might be difficult dealing with 32 different personalities. The group was wonderful, we had great camaraderie, everyone was very inclusive. Our tour guide randy was awesome. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful with directing us to the variety of hikes that we could choose. Michael was wonderful and our bus driver Russell was awesome. Overall it was a wonderful experience and would consider doing another group tour.

Day 1: Explore Awesome Zion

There's no mistaking it,  Zion National Park  is a bucket-list destination. For that reason, it welcomes a lot of annual visitors. Weekends are the busiest time, especially late morning to early afternoon. Book early for Springdale hotel accommodations, or consider an earlier departure from a base camp in St. George. No matter how you plan it, you must visit Zion National Park.

All-access pass

You'll find all generations enjoying the Human Past Museum, Emerald Pools and the Riverside Walk and take the scenic drive through the Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel.

The Must See

The Riverside Walk is a paved, 1-mile journey from the Temple of Sinawava to the mouth of the Narrows. You will be joined on the journey by travelers from around the world. Canyon walls rise on either side of the river, where kids old and young splash around. Walking sticks line the wall for those prepared for the riverbed hike into the Narrows. Wear hiking boots appropriate for safely navigating rocky riverbed. Though flash floods can occasionally prohibit entry into the canyon, there is nothing like the echo of thunder through Zion Canyon or the cooling afternoon rains of the monsoon season. For fit travelers, Angels Landing is must-hike trail. But its final quarter-mile traverses a narrow ridge — it requires a great amount of caution and care, and is not recommended for small children or people with a fear of heights.

State Park Alternative

Snow Canyon State Park  explodes with dramatic geology perfect for your outdoor adventure – and photo opportunities. With much of the look and feel of Zion National Park, you'll enjoy hiking among the sandstone cliffs, petrified sand dunes and broad lava fields.

Day 2: Get Inspired in Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon National Park  is also very popular. The moment you first set eyes on its shockingly original and vast amphitheater of orange hoodoos, you'll know why. Accommodations in the park's lodge and nearby Bryce Canyon City can fill up quickly, so book in advance. Nearby towns on the All-American Road Scenic Byway 12 offer alternatives. Believe us when we say you won't mind the drive into the park.

The scenic drive accesses multiple overlooks into the vast amphitheaters of Bryce Canyon, granting bird's-eye views of hoodoos, spires, bridges and beyond into rugged backcountry.

The Rim Trail between Sunrise and Sunset Point and Yovimpa Point are short, easy trails with rewarding views. Also check for learning opportunities such as ranger-led full moon hikes or astronomy lessons under Bryce Canyon's pristine night skies. Under clear skies during the full moon, you'll feel like you have night vision as a moon so brilliant illuminates the entire canyon.

Bigger Adventure

Navajo Loop/Queen's Garden is a 3.1 mile loop that takes hikers down to the canyon floor for an all-together different view of the hoodoos. The drop in elevation makes for a heart-pumping hike back up, but very doable for most ages.

Day 3: Cedar Breaks National Monument and Brian Head Resort

Continue the expedition by driving up to 10,000 feet where short hikes access the rim of the astonishing  Cedar Breaks National Monument  and the quaint mountain town of Brian Head offers access to all manner of mountain adventure for outdoor enthusiasts and the comforts of luxury spas and dining for those in the family ready to relax and unwind.

Bryce Canyon itself is huge! But the national park includes a variety of unique angles from which to experience the canyon as well as some more secluded scenic areas that you don’t want to miss. Hiking is a popular way to explore Bryce Canyon, all year round.

There are trails available throughout the park for hikers of all skill levels. Some trails are short and stay mainly in the upper areas for overlooking the canyon. Others go deep into the canyon and provide more of a challenge. Depending on what you’re looking for, you can find the perfect hike for you. 

Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing

Don’t let a little snow or cooler temperatures stop you from enjoying the beauty of Bryce Canyon National Park! Many visitors enjoy strapping on some skis or snowshoes and trekking across the same trails available for hiking during the warmer months. 

Some areas are not accessible when there is snow, but many still are. Snowshoes are generally permitted on the same trails available for hiking during warmer months; however, cross-country skiing is limited to the Rim Trail and other ski trails on the plateau.

Winter is actually a great time to visit Bryce Canyon Country. The crowds are usually a little smaller, but the views are even more incredible when the sunlight sparkles on the snow-covered hoodoos and canyon walls. Just be sure to dress warm!

Horseback Riding

Another fun and unique way to explore the canyon and surrounding area is by horseback. If you’re not an experienced rider or don’t have horses of your own, you can book a guided ride through the canyon and surrounding area with local outfitters. 

Many visitors pull in horse-trailers from far and wide to do some trail riding in one of the most beautiful and scenic areas in the West. Please follow all guidelines if bringing your own horse or mule.  

Tourists and locals visit Bryce Canyon National Park for a variety of reasons and in a wide variety of ways. Here are the things you should know about visiting Bryce Canyon.

Entrance Fees

Visitors must pay a fee to access the park. You have the option to buy regular passes that allow access for up to 7 days or extended use passes.

7-Day Passes

The price for these passes depends on the vehicle you use to enter the park or if you walk in on foot.

• The fee for one private vehicle and its occupants is $35 (7 days)
• The fee for an individual on foot or bicycle to enter the park is $20 (7 days)
• The fee for a motorcycle is $30 (7 days)

Extended Use And Special Passes

• An annual pass to Bryce Canyon National Park is $70 
• The “America the Beautiful Annual Pass,” which allows access into any National Park or Federal Recreation Land, is $80.
• The “America the Beautiful Senior Pass” is $20 annually or $80 for a lifetime pass and is for ages 62 and older.

You can purchase any of these passes at the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park.

Please note, the “America the Beautiful Access Pass” is free to permanently disabled U.S. residents. For more information on passes, visit www.nps.gov/brca .

Campgrounds and Fees

There are two campsites available inside Bryce Canyon National Park — North and Sunset Campgrounds. Setting up camp here puts you a rock throw away from the tall, majestic hoodoos and red-rock amphitheater that make Bryce Canyon National Park famous.

Both campgrounds have around 100 camping sites each with fresh water and flush toilets available. The North Campground is closer to the visitor center and the Sunset Campground is closer to Bryce’s most popular hiking trails . Both are surrounded by the sweet smell of Ponderosa pine.

Sunset Campground is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The North Campground is open all year. It allows reservations from May 27th to October 1st and first come, first serve from October 2nd to May 26th. Camping is $20 a night per tent site. One group campsite is available by reservation only at Sunset Campground. Some pull-through motor-home sites are available.

If you think running water is way too civilized when camping, you can take your backpack and be a backcountry camper. Choose from eight campsites along Under-the-Rim Trail or four campsites on the Riggs Spring Loop Trail. Camp only at designated sites and Leave No Trace. Dispersed camping and open fires are not permitted inside the park.

To camp in the backcountry, a backcountry camping permit is required. Backcountry permits are $10/permit + $5/person. You must be over the age of 16 to obtain a permit. Stays can be up to 14 days, and permits can be reserved up to 48 hours in advance. Permits are issued at the Visitor Center from 8 am to 6 pm or one hour before the Visitor Center closes (whichever is earlier).

Visitor Center

Whether you come from near or far, there is plenty of travel information available for you at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center. 

The visitor center is open year-round!

• Summer hours are 8 am to 8 pm
• Spring/fall hours are 8 am to 6 pm
• Winter hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm

Check the visitor center for times of ranger-led walks & talks.

Interpretive programs are offered throughout the year, weather permitting.

Transportation

Shuttle service is included in the price of your entrance fee to the park. The Bryce Canyon shuttle runs from mid-April through mid-October and stops at various scenic locations, lodging, and service areas along its route.

You are welcome to drive your vehicle within the park, but we recommend saving gas and taking the shuttle instead of fighting the hustle and bustle of traffic yourself.

Limited shuttle service is also available to get you to Bryce Canyon National Park from the nearby lodging sites.

Bryce Canyon National Park Tours

If you’d prefer to explore the national park on your own, that’s just fine, but keep in mind that there are some exciting and unique ways to see Bryce Canyon and the surrounding area with a guided tour. They are great for tourists or even just locals who want to see Bryce from a new perspective!

Commercial Tours

Commercial tour fees are based on vehicle capacity for all tour groups and bus companies. Group size is determined by vehicle seating capacity, not the number of actual people in the vehicle.

• Vehicles with a seating capacity of 26 or greater will be charged a flat fee of $150
• Vehicles with a seating capacity of 16-25 seats will be charged a flat fee of $60.00
• Vehicles with a seating capacity of 7-15 seats (Passenger Van) will be charged a flat fee of $50.00
• Vehicles with a seating capacity of 1-6 seats will be charged a fee of $30.00 plus a per person fee of $15.00 for those over 16 years (not to exceed $50)

Stargazing And Astronomy Tours

Bryce Canyon National Park is beautiful in the daytime, but seeing it at night is a completely different experience! Free of light pollution, the night sky above Bryce Canyon National Park has the Milky Way on full display with over 7,500 visible stars. The starlight shining down is so bright, you’ll still see your shadow on the ground in the middle of the night.

On Wednesday and Friday evenings from May to September, trained park rangers and volunteers provide detailed astronomy presentations. You can also enjoy guided night hikes during each month’s new moon. These exclusive night-time activities at Bryce Canyon are limited to a relatively small number of people, so you’ll want to make sure to book your spot early. The hoodoos at night are still beautiful but in an eerie sort of way!

Between Memorial Day and October 1st, trained park rangers and volunteers provide guided night sky viewing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Another option is to book a private night sky activity through Dark Ranger Telescope Tours.

During the Bryce Canyon Astronomy Festival, more night hikes are available along with telescope-viewing sessions. These unique Bryce Canyon experiences are fun for the whole family.

Aerial Tours of Bryce Canyon National Park

One Trip You Must Make Before You Die

Patricia Schultz’s 1,000 Places to See Before You Die isn’t for seniors, especially those of us now in our eighth decade. Regrettably, we haven’t the time, the energy, or the money.

But what if it were a more realistic Five Places… ?

In our book, one of them would certainly be a tour of those three grand natural American cathedrals of northern Arizona and southern Utah: Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Zion Canyon. Each is a national treasure, unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Each leaves you whomperjawed. And each is more audacious, more stunningly beautiful than the others.

We know. For those of us who already have experienced the Grand Canyon, we wonder, “How can anything be more magnificent than that?”

Maybe it can’t. But the profound experience of these three natural wonders is beyond visual. It’s visceral, and their immense, majestic glory gets under your skin and into your heart, and never leaves.

But let’s start at the beginning.

Our eight-day, $995 Caravan Tour (see below) last fall of the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Lake Powell, Monument Valley, Bryce, and Zion began at Phoenix’s swank DoubleTree Suites. There we met our fellow travelers, guide and bus driver for our welcome briefing. (We had flown to Phoenix a couple of days earlier to get reacquainted with the city and friends living there.)

The next day we visited the Montezuma Castle cliff dwellings, with its 15,000 years of history, on our way to Sedona, the only disappointment of our trip.

We’d visited this popular area 25 years earlier. Maybe we’re more jaded this time around, but this still beautiful community set in the red rocks of northern Arizona has matured from an artists’ colony to an overpriced luxury destination of the rich and famous.

However, Carolyn and others swore they felt the reinvigorating energy vortexes for which the area is noted, making the experience unique and worthwhile.

Bushwhacked by God (Our Grand Canyon Trip for Seniors)

Everyone has his or her own Grand Canyon first impression. Most include utter surprise – like being bushwhacked by God.

You see, there’s nothing to prepare you for this magnificent six-million-year old hole in the ground. All you see, especially coming in from the south, is flat and dry. Even though the north rim of this massive rift in the Colorado Plateau is about 1,000 feet higher, the edge must be approached within mere yards before its overwhelming size and intricate and colorful landscape reveal themselves.

Suddenly, you’re looking down 7,000 feet through two billion years of history to the Colorado River below. And this vast chasm is at places 18 miles across!

If you’re fit, you may have time to descend to the bottom and back or do some serious hiking or bicycling. Maverick Helicopters provide incredible rim-to-rim views from $175.

We took the free park bus, operating every 10 to 20 minutes, to various viewpoints along the south rim, photographing the ever-changing canyon face under the afternoon’s setting sun – and the next morning’s rising sun – capturing many facets of this glorious tribute to Mother Nature.

Nearly five million tourists visit Grand Canyon each year, most from their cars. A National Park Service ranger told me that the average stay is 15 minutes. What a shame! We’ve been there a half dozen times now, and the view is always different, always magnificent – always spiritual.

Late the next afternoon we enjoyed a scenic boat cruise gazing up at Lake Powell’s dramatically steep, glowing red sandstone walls just above the Glen Canyon Dam. We’re floating on 700-feet of water that provides the power that runs much of the West.

A short drive the next morning takes us to the Navajo Indian Nation and Monument Valley. This is John Wayne country. Filmmaker John Ford filmed 10 of his Westerns here with stars the likes of Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, Maureen O’Hara, and of course, John Wayne.

Other films, from 2001 to Easy Rider, Thelma & Louise, Mission: Impossible II, and Forrest Gump all took advantage of this valley’s vivid red color schemes.

Still part of the Colorado Plateau, it’s a magical, pristine area of buttes and arches – sacred to the Navajos – that is seen best by a Caravan-provided Jeep on a 17-mile dirt road.

Hoodoo Voodoo (Bryce Canyon for Seniors)

After a beautiful drive northwest through brilliant red, yellow, and pink fall foliage, Bryce Canyon at up to 9,100 feet elevation, turns out not to be a canyon at all, but a series of magnificent horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah.

Known as “The Most Colorful Park in America,” Bryce is famous for its vertical towers called hoodoos.

The best! Mabry was a knowledgeable enthusiastic guide and answered so many questions in three hours. We had a choice of guided hikes. We wanted to learn as much as possible about Bryce before doing our own hikes, and he gave us a constant narrative while hiking Devils Loop and also giving a botany lesson at Inspiration Point.

Incredible!!! We went on the private tour with Oscar. He picked us up at our campsite is a very nice van. He was a bucket full of knowledge. (They also have group tours). He designed our tour around our guest’s limited mobility and took us to 4 beautiful destination that were accessible for all of us. We got such a great overview of how the “hoodoos” are formed, trees and vegetation as well as some folklore. I highly recommend Oscar and Bryce Canyon Scenic Tours. While the accommodations on this trip reflect the natural surroundings of the national parks and provide unparalleled access to the best activities in the area, they are simpler than is typical of Backroads lodging. Many buildings date back to the turn of the century and have only been minimally renovated, in accordance with park regulations. The Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim and the Lodge at Bryce Canyon have basic guest rooms that are not equipped with televisions or air-conditioning (nights are usually cool due to the high elevation). Overall, the service standards can seem slow and casual when compared with the hospitality found on other Backroads trips. Please note that internet and cell phone service are extremely limited throughout the parks.​​

The properties we use on this trip are chosen for their character and ideal location—they are not known for their food. Meals can be simple and menu options tend to lack variety. Please be aware that options for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and low-carb meals will be especially limited and substitutions are rarely available.

The National Park Service has many regulations on hiking. In Bryce Canyon National Park, your leaders can hike with you but can't act as "interpretive guides." They'll also be unable to hike with you in Grand Canyon National Park. Throughout the trip, your leaders will give an orientation to the area's flora, fauna and terrain before your hikes and rides. If you are doing a day trip to Bryce, then you need to get yourselves up and out by no later than 9 AM. It’s a five hour, round trip drive. You will need to be back in Spryanout an hour before sunset.

Drive the scenic drive in your own. Drive to the end to

Bryce Point. Then head back out the way you came, stopping at the viewpoints Ealk the Rim Trail as far as you like.

Using this appt, you will always be making right hand turns. Take a picnic lunch with you so you don’t have to take time waiting in line for food.

It'll be a 5 hour drive round trip to Bryce and back to Springdale. Heed the warnings of not driving in the dark. When you enter Bryce, drive to the end of the scenic drive to Bryce Point. Enjoy the overlook and take the 1 mile easy Bristlecone trail loop. Backtrack on the scenic drive making stops at view point along the way (all right turns). Park at one of the several parking lots at the main area and walk the Rim Trail to view the hoodoos in the amphitheater. Although food is sold at Bryce Lodge and outside of the park, it is recommended you travel with picnic supplies to not waste time waiting in line for food.

The easy walks at Bryce are along the rim. anything else goes down the hill and you have to walk back up so it’s not too easy. but you should try to go down one of the trails a little bit, probably Navajo would be the best, just so you get a different perspective of the hoodoos.

I would spend my time at the main amphitheater first, and then go down to the natural Bridge, and then keep going to the end of the scenic drive if you have time.

You definitely don’t want to be driving back to Zions in the dark. It gets dark about a half an hour after sunset so just make sure you leave Bryce in time to get back before then.

Looking at the Bryce map, it appears that Bryce Point is at the end of a lesser road heading east off the main road. The main road route 63 seems to go further and ends at Yovimpa Point. Is it better just to go to Bryce Point and not go all the way to Yovimpa Point?

There's no reason why you can't drive out to Yavipa Point and the take the spur road to Bryce Point. To me, going to Bryce Point first is a "Wow! Spectacular, Mind blowing" first view of the amphitheater. What you do it up to you. I don't think there's a better.

It appears time-wise it is better to not go all the way to Yovimpa Point, our time would be better spent on the Bryce Point spur. Thanks

The main amphitheater includes sunrise, sunset, inspiration, and Bryce points. For me that wow moment is always between sunset and inspiration.

But you’ll also want to drive south to Natural bridge. It isn’t far from Bryce point and I think you’ll be glad you didn’t miss it.

Hoodoos are tall skinny shafts of rock that protrude from the bottom of arid basins. They are an array of natural bowls or amphitheaters which are filled with unevenly eroded spires of rocks. Hoodoos are mostly found in High Plateau regions, but they are nowhere more abundant anywhere in the world than the northern part of Bryce Canyon National Park.

We booked the Half Day’er ATV tour, which included Peekaboo Slot Canyon, the Great Chamber, & the Hoodoos. Mike was our tour guide and he was absolutely awesome to spend the afternoon with. We had a group of 8 and were in town for a friend’s birthday. We all had ample opportunity to take turns driving the ATVs, got lots of drive time in, and got some good hiking in at each of the locations. The ATVs themselves are quality, brand new Canams— definitely incredibly cool.

Each location is so different, the views were amazing, and Mike never once made us feel rushed through any of it. At the Great Chamber, Mike essentially gave us our own little photo shoot and recommended some great shots to get. At the Hoodoos, it had just gotten done raining and getting up the sloped rock was slippery and pretty difficult. Mike took the time to help those who still wanted to try and climb up and then helped us back down. The Peekaboo Slot Canyon was probably our favorite stop and we spent quite a bit of time there, Mike had some really interesting tidbits to share.

All in all, our afternoon spent with the Roam Outdoor Adventure Co. was worth every single penny and every single minute it took us to drive there (we drove 3 hours). I’d highly recommend them to anyone vacationing in the Zion area.

ROAM Outdoor Adventures was the experience of a lifetime! Our group of 4 did the Half Dayer with an option of sand boarding and it was the best day of our trip! Our guide, Mikey, was nothing short of gold. He navigated us through the desert like a champ. He had a wealth of stories and knowledge worth a week of campfires! These views of our countryside are unparalleled. FYI the hike to the Great Chamber is in the desert, uphill and through thick sand. It is not a simple hike. Bring lots of water. Aging in Place — an organization that offers resources for older adults — has released a ranking of the most accessible national parks. Badlands National Park took the top spot.

The rugged and beautiful park has visitor centers, trails, and even campgrounds with ramps and that are accessible to all, including those in wheelchairs.

Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona)

Many of Grand Canyon National Park facilities were built before modern accessibility standards were established. However, all the park's shuttle buses are accessible to those in wheelchairs, and plenty of areas around the park can be comfortably explored.

Grand Canyon also offers a "Scenic Drive Accessibility Permit" that allows visitors with mobility issues to access areas not otherwise open to the public.

Yellowstone (Wyoming, Montana, Idaho)

Bryce Canyon National Park (Utah)

Bryce Canyon National Park — a stunning park offering incredible views of massive rock formations — also earns high accessibility ratings from Aging in Place.

The park’s visitor centers and several of its viewpoints and trails are relatively easy to access. Bryce Canyon also has campgrounds that are reserved for visitors with mobility impairments.

Hot Springs National Park (Arkansas)

Cuyahoga Valley National Park (Ohio)

Joshua Tree National Park (California)

Joshua Tree National Park is another bucket-list destination for many nature lovers. It has several accessible visitor centers, nature trails, and campgrounds.

The true wonder of the Mojave and Colorado deserts can be seen in the park. However, as in Death Valley, older visitors should be aware that the ecosystem can lead to some difficult weather.

Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming)

Visitors with limited mobility may have trouble accessing the tram ride to the top of the arch. Still, there are plenty of paved paths and riverboat cruises along the Mississippi River that all can enjoy.

Everglades National Park (Florida)

Everglades National Park — home to the largest subtropical wilderness in the country and a habitat for many rare species, such as manatees and crocodiles — offers visitors plenty to see and do.

Many of its trails and visitor centers are accessible — as are several frontcountry campsites and the Pearl Bay Chickee backcountry campsite.

Bottom line

A National Park Service Senior Pass offers access to hundreds of recreation sites, including those operated by other agencies such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service.
