One Direction began work on their third studio album while embarking on their second world tour, the Take Me Home Tour . [3] The album was announced simultaneously with news of the band's third world tour, the Where We Are Tour . Louis described the album as "rockier". The track listing for the album was leaked on July 2, 2013.

The official album title was revealed on September 6, 2013, after Zayn tweeted a short video with  Harry writing out the word "Mid..." from alphabet letters. [4] Later, the full video was posted on Instagram with Harry spelling the whole name of the album, Midnight Memories . [5] On September 17, 2013, Niall tweeted that he will be playing guitar on some of the tracks on the album. [6]

The artwork was released early exclusively by tabloid newspaper The Sun's Twitter account [7] . The early access was only available to those people who had a membership with the online version of the newspaper.

On October 11, 2013, One Direction revealed the track listing for the album via a "#MidnightMemoriesTrackQuiz" on Twitter. [8]  The tracks were revealed with a mixture of hints and fill in the gap questions.

One Direction collaborated with iHeartRadio for an album release party on November 22, 2013 in Los Angeles, where songs were previewed.

On October 17, 2013, it was revealed in a video [9] posted in a news article on the One Direction website [10] that:

  • If you had pre-ordered any of the singles from Midnight Memories and you wanted to buy the album then you wouldn't be charged for the track you'd already bought.
  • " Story of My Life " on October 28th
  • " Diana " on November 18th
  • " Midnight Memories " on November 20th
  • " You & I " on November 22nd

A lyric video and images were posted for Story of My Life and Diana .

A TV advert [11] was released and seen on YouTube as well as on TV. There were also posters in bus stops and on billboards. There were countdown videos till the day of the album release on November 25th. The album was leaked on November 18, 2013, seven days ahead of its official release. [12] . The band participated in a seven hour long livestream called 1D Day as part of promotion for the album. It was released on November 25, 2013 and a video [13] posted on their channel. It reached number 1 in over 90 countries and all 18 tracks appeared on the iTunes Top 100 chart in America by the end of the day.

Review: One Direction’s one goal on ‘Midnight Memories’: the very top

The new One Direction album sounds like it was designed to win over (or perhaps further irritate) people likely to scoff at the idea that this British outfit is the biggest band on the planet.

The scale of its success seems beyond dispute, with 16 million Twitter followers, 35 million albums sold worldwide and well over 1 billion views of its videos on YouTube — all in the two years since the group released its debut in 2011. Coldplay and Foo Fighters can’t even get in the same room to compete.

Yet One Direction’s origin story, as five super-cute solo contestants thrown together on the U.K. version of “The X Factor,” triggers skepticism among believers in bands as vehicles for certain creative traditions: writing your own songs, say, or jamming with guys you’ve known since childhood.

PHOTOS: A guide to the current top pop ensembles

None of that could possibly matter less on “Midnight Memories,” easily the year’s most convincing rock album and one that suggests that the genre has, like all other genres in 2013, broken free of its own foundations.

Here there are spirited, pitch-perfect replicas of the Who’s power-chord bombast (“Best Song Ever”), Van Halen’s louche boogie (“Little Black Dress”) and Def Leppard’s stadium-sized glam (“Midnight Memories”).

In “Does He Know?,” a bonus track from the album’s deluxe edition, the band helps itself to the instantly recognizable riff from “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield, while “You & I” could be a cover of Bryan Adams’ early-’80s ballad “Heaven.”

PHOTOS: Katy Perry in concert: onstage and offbeat

Overall, the record presents a rowdier, more guitar-oriented sound than One Direction’s previous efforts, which made greater use of synthetic club beats and R&B-style singing and featured songwriting and production input from Top 40 wizards such as Dr. Luke, RedOne and Shellback. (This time the group’s collaborators include Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody and Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic — not exactly a Mt. Rushmore of rock, but a telling lineup for an act of talent-show veterans.)

The group has been affecting a studied looseness onstage, as well: Roaming around in front of a capacity crowd at Staples Center, where One Direction played four sold-out concerts in August, the choreography-averse quintet came across more like the Rolling Stones in 1965 than the Backstreet Boys in 1997 — especially Harry Styles, the band’s de facto frontman, who’d even adopted Keith Richards’ debauched-pirate head-scarf look.

Styles went further on Sunday’s American Music Awards, pushing his voice during the new album’s “Story of My Life” beyond the usual boy-band precision into a kind of tortured man-bellow. By established One Direction standards, this was basically Eddie Vedder doing Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy.”

PHOTOS: Supremes to Dolls -- Girl group evolution

So having fully conquered the moms-and-daughters set that propelled them to stardom, are Styles and his bandmates now gunning for the dads who’ve begrudgingly chaperoned their girls at One Direction gigs across the land?

Maybe. Even if they’re hitting all kinds of dad-rock pleasure centers on “Midnight Memories,” though, the lyrics are sure to alarm parents on the lookout for teenage dirtbags, to borrow the title of the Wheatus song One Direction covered on its most recent tour.

“Your eyes keep saying things,” “She kissed me like she meant it,” “I wanna see the way you move for me” — you get the picture.

Then again, the One Direction machine has grown too large (and too lucrative) to risk truly alienating anyone, which is why “Midnight Memories” offsets the lively bad-boy stuff with a handful of swooning folk-pop numbers seemingly inspired by the good-guy likes of Travis and Mumford & Sons.

PHOTOS: Miley Cyrus before and after Disney

The band and its enablers are no less expert at reproducing this more genteel style; “Through the Dark,” for instance, is a shuffling acoustic ditty complete with overblown words about fighting through fire and water for someone’s love. It could be, rather tragically, by the Lumineers.

But One Direction in pure thirsting-for-respect mode is nobody’s idea of a good time.

What makes songs like “Diana” and “Little White Lies” so much fun is that you can hear a bit of the laughing contempt the band holds for those unwilling to take it seriously — the same contempt, it should be noted, that the Who and Van Halen once oozed before they became Hall of Famers.

These sounds are ours to use now, the music seems to say. You really think you can stop us?

One Direction’s ‘Midnight Memories’ Set for Big No. 1 Debut

One Direction's new album "Midnight Memories" is easily heading for No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 chart with a robust sales start.

One Direction's 'Midnight Memories' Set for Big No. 1 Debut

One Direction’s new album “Midnight Memories” is easily heading for No. 1 on next week’s Billboard 200 chart with a robust sales start. This week’s top album , projected to be an encore by Eminem’s “The Marshall Mathers LP 2,” will be made official on Billboard.com tomorrow morning.

Industry sources forecast the 1D’s album to sell 500,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Dec. 1. The album — which was released on Monday, Nov. 25 — has a possibility of reaching the 525,000 to 550,000 range. The number is a bit hard to pin down, thanks to the marketplace being thrown for a loop by the Thanksgiving holiday, Black Friday-related promotions and holiday shopping festivities.

That said, a start north of 500,000 for Midnight Memories would likely give the group its third No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, following its first two chart-topping albums: “Up All Night” and “Take Me Home.”

Laura Pausini trae retrospectiva de sus 30 años de carrera a Miami, canta con Luis Fonsi

Both of those sets were released in 2012, and debuted at No. 1. The former sold 176,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, while the latter opened with 540,000.

Trending on Billboard

The new Billboard 200 chart’s top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Amazingly, if One Direction debuts at No. 1, they’ll become the first group since the Monkees in 1967 to reach No. 1 with their first three albums.

It’s a fitting chart feat, since both acts were born on TV. One Direction was formed on the 2010 edition of the U.K. TV talent show “The X Factor,” and saw their debut album bow in their home country the following year.

As for the Monkees, the quartet (Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork) was recruited explicitly to star in a TV show. That show, “The Monkees,” premiered on Sept. 12, 1966 on ABC. The group’s self-titled debut album was released shortly thereafter, and climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in its sixth week on the chart. The act followed up the No. 1 success with three more consecutive No. 1s in 1967: “More of the Monkees,” “Headquarters” and “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.”

If “Midnight Memories” sells 500,000, it will also give One Direction their second sales week greater than a half-million (following “Take Me Home’s” debut). Since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991, only two other pop groups have logged multiple half-million sales weeks: ‘N Sync and Backstreet Boys.

‘N Sync did it seven times with three different albums, while Backstreet Boys did it nine times with two albums. Other groups and bands have earned numerous 500,000-plus frames, but they were all R&B, rap, country or rock acts.

A fair chunk of One Direction’s debut is fueled by pre-orders via the iTunes Store. Sources suggest that nearly 200,000 pre-orders were registered before the album went on sale. That doesn’t necessarily mean that all of the pre-orders will translate into actual, completed sales, but one can imagine a good deal of them will.

Wait a minute! Didn’t we just leave this party?

Okay, the One Direction guys didn’t release two albums in 2013 like they did in 2012 (in the U.S.), but that doesn’t mean the year hasn’t felt like a nonstop 1D jam session. Singles from  Take Me Home  trailed out into early 2013, and then the English-Irish boy band released a concert film at the end of August ( One Direction: This Is Us ) . This album’s promotion began when its first single (” Best Song Ever “) started blanketing airwaves in July.

So it’s been all One Direction all the time for nearly two years straight as the talent-show also-rans continue their steamrolling strategy for pop music domination.

Plugged In hasn’t been all that crazy about that direction, for the record. And the title of this third effort frankly didn’t do much to allay our anxiety. So we quickly dug into it, wanting to know where Harry, Zayn, Liam, Niall and Louis were taking their young fans now.

Pro-Social Content

“Let me be the one to lift your heart up and save your life,” we hear on the sentimental “Diana,” “I don’t think you even realize, baby, you’d be saving mine.” “Strong” treads tender lyrical territory too: “I’m not scared of love/’Cause when I’m not with you, I’m weaker/Is that so wrong/Is that so wrong/That you make me strong?” “Through the Dark” promises to faithfully guide a fragile partner through foreboding times (“I can see your head is held in shame/But I just wanna see you smile again/ … We will find a way through the dark/ … So let’s just laugh again”).

“You & I” focuses on a couple trying to overcome differences (“No, nothing can come between/You and I/ … We can make it if we try”). “Don’t Forget Where You Belong” finds a touring musician longing for the comfort and goodness of home, while “Right Now” relishes a special moment with friends and longs for a distant loved one to be near.

” Story of My Life ” evinces a growing self-awareness as the guys confess that empty relationships involving sex without emotional intimacy or commitment aren’t getting the job done for them.

Objectionable Content

But while “Story of My Life” may recognize that physical intimacy alone doesn’t lead to lasting satisfaction, there’s little evidence that the realization is creating any real change. As I noted in the track review, ” The sexual connections implied in the tune’s two longer vignettes don’t help much in sorting through these kinds of romantic troubles. And powerful romanticism cloaks the assumption that loving someone and sleeping with them unquestionably go together. ”

” Best Song Ever ” makes light of a guy’s “dirty mouth,” talks about a girl’s kissing and finally propositions the aforementioned young woman with this line: “I said, ‘Can I take you home with me?'” (To her credit, she declines.) “Little Black Dress” leers, “I wanna see the way you move for me, baby,” then suggests, “It’s so right/’Cause I’ll take you home.”

Along with a “shhh” sound standing in twice for the s-word and some suggestive heavy breathing on the title track, we also hear, “Tell me that I’m wrong, but I do what I please/ … I don’t care how much we spend/ … For tonight let’s just pretend/I don’t wanna stop, so give me more.” “Happily” finds a man brazenly having an affair with a woman he “loves” so much he doesn’t care about the consequences (“You know I wanna be the one to hold you when you sleep/ … It’s 4 a.m., and I know you’re with him/I wonder if he knows that I touched your skin/And if he feels my traces in your hair/Sorry, love, but I don’t really care.”) The bonus track “Does He Know” furthers these cheating motifs.

“Little White Lies” finds a guy saying, “I know you want it/I know you feel it too/Let’s stop pretending/That you don’t know what I don’t know/Just what we came to do.” There’s also backseat kissing in a cab and innuendo about breaking rules. On “Better Than Words,” somebody brags, “Best I ever had/Hips don’t lie.” And on bonus track “Why Don’t We Go There,” the there in question is sex: “Why don’t we go there?/ … There’s no right time or place/’Cause anyone can see we’ll do it anyway.”

Still another bonus track, “Alive,” involves going to counseling for sex addiction (“I don’t know why I wanna be with every girl I meet”), only to hear from a counselor that he should just do whatever he wants: “She said, ‘Hey, it’s all right/Does it make you feel alive?/Don’t look back/Live your life/Even if it’s only for tonight.” Not surprisingly, he turns around and uses those same lines on a young woman he meets at a party.

Summary Advisory

1D takes two steps in a different direction … and then three back on the same old path.

The young men in the 2010s’ biggest boy band deserve credit for proffering some vulnerable moments in which they admit that maybe there’s more to life than just sex, or sing about overcoming difficulties and faithfully facing dark times together. But then they push all that aside with a blast of sexy, saucy Midnight Memories.

Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles of One Direction

Still the best song(s) ever.

Does the date March 25, 2015, mean anything to you? If you weren’t a devoted One Direction fan (who wasn’t?), most likely not. But if you couldn’t get enough of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson, you probably recall that date as one of the most devastating days in music history: when One Direction announced Zayn’s departure from the boy band.

While this wasn’t the beloved quintet's final curtain yet — Styles, Horan, Payne, and Tomlinson went on tour again and released another album — the vibes were never quite the same, and less than a year later, they collectively began their hiatus. Thankfully, all of the boys went on to pursue solo careers, so the fandom lives on. And now, even as they grow individually, they frequently acknowledge the band that skyrocketed them to fame — often sharing admiration for their ex-bandmates as well as unknown deets about what really went down at the end of their six-year run.

It’s been eight years since their headline-making split, but the band is more relevant now than ever. When the trailer for the upcoming 1D fanfic-inspired film The Idea Of You dropped on March 6, Directioners were quick to notice the similarities between the fictional boy band and the real thing — kickstarting a refresher course on 1D lore for many fans.

Here’s a complete and thorough rundown of everything the One Direction bandmates have said about each other since that fateful day.

Zayn Malik on Hot Ones on YouTube

On March 14, days after Malik announced his fourth solo studio album, Room Under the Stairs (set to drop on May 17), the singer joined Sean Evans for a new episode of Hot Ones . While chowing down on fiery hot wings, he answered some burning questions about One Direction and debunked a scary moment from one of their tours.

“On stage, Harry was right next to a pyro, and the pyro was about to go off because they were on timers. He had a towel over his head, and he had his head over the pyro and he didn’t see that the pyro was there,” Malik said. “You see me run from one side of the stage and push him out of the way and the pyro explodes in front of his face — that was really dangerous.”

On a lighter note, Malik also reminisced on the group’s favorite song for filling the air during technical difficulties. “We’d just burst into ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ acapella,” he revealed. “Just do the whole performance of that until the microphones were working again. That was the thing that we had in our back pocket always like, ‘If the microphone goes, we’ve always got that,'” he added. “As if it was some amazing performance. Funny times.”

Zayn Malik, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

Marking his first interview after six years of radio silence, Malik sat down with Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper to share that his grand exit from the group stemmed from wanting to be the first to leave.

"I was like, 'I'm just gonna get out of here, I think this is done,’” he said. "I completely selfishly wanted to be the first person to go and make my own record. ... I'm a passive dude but when it comes to my music and my business, I'm serious about it. I'm competitive, so I wanted to be the first to go and do my own thing."

He also cleared up that even though he had a “great time” with his bandmates, things had run their course. “There was obviously underlying issues within our friendships, too. We'd been together every day for five years and we got sick of each other, if I'm being completely honest," he told Cooper. "We were close. We'd done crazy things with each other that nobody else in the world will ever understand. I look back on it now in a much fonder light than I would’ve as I'd just left."

Niall Horan, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

While promoting his second solo studio album, The Show , Horan chatted with Zane Lowe about the possibility of a One Direction reunion. “We speak regularly, but that [reunion] conversation hasn’t happened,” he said. “God knows what it ends up being — it could be like the Friends reunion, it could be a whole tour. God knows what it is, but it hasn’t been spoken about.”

Harry Styles, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

Just two months earlier, Styles made a surprise appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden , where the host also asked the Fine Line singer about reuniting with his ex-bandmates. He answered quickly, saying, "I think I would never say never to that. If there was a time when we wanted to do it, I don't see why we wouldn't," Styles said.

Louis Tomlinson, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

Tomlinson revealed in an interview with The Times that he was “mortified” and “absolutely gutted” when 1D split up. "I was a bit bitter, I suppose because it just felt like another loss to me. But I've a better understanding of things now, and there's not as much anger. It is what it is,” he said.

As for a possible reunion, Tomlinson said “getting back together at some point is hard to imagine right now,” — an understandable statement given their solo careers are jam-packed. “But I'd be surprised if we lived out our lives and didn't have a moment where we had a reunion, or whatever you want to call it. I'd be up for that."

Harry Styles accepting a Grammy. His former bandmates Niall Horan and Liam Payne congratulated him

Shortly after Styles won Grammy Awards including Album Of The Year for Harry’s House , his former bandmates took to Instagram to express their congratulations.

Payne posted a now-deleted photo of Styles accepting his award, writing, “Wow… this image is really something to wake up to and when you write music like you do Harry you deserve every millisecond of that moment looking down smiling at the trophy you've earned. God bless you brother congratulations.” Horan also shared the sentiments on his IG story, writing that he was very proud of Styles’ accomplishments.

Liam Payne, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

In the controversial Impaulsive podcast episode heard ‘round the world, Payne joined YouTuber Logan Paul for a gossip-filled interview about all things One Direction.

“There's many many reasons why I dislike Zayn and there's many reasons why I'll always always be on his side. You can always look at the man for where he is and say, 'Oh yeah, whatever, that guy's a d*ck,' but at the end of the day, once you understand what he's been through to get to the point, and also whether or not if he actually even wanted to be there,” Payne said.

"Listen, I don't agree with any of his actions,” he continued. “I can't commend some of the things that he's done. But what I can say is that I understand, and you only hope that some point in their life, the person on the other end of the phone wants to receive the help you're willing to give."

Payne also eluded that an unnamed band member threw him against the wall in a physical altercation that almost turned violent. He said he told them, “If you don’t remove those hands there’s a high likelihood you’ll never use them again.” When questioned about his solo career, Payne compared his success to the rest of the band, boasting, “I think [“Strip That Down”] outsold everybody within the band, and I was the last to go [solo]. And I never expected that.”

Harry Styles, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

Just a month before his Grammy-winning album Harry’s House dropped, Styles was interviewed for an exclusive cover story with Better Homes & Gardens . Taking readers on a journey through his career and accomplishments, he recalled his experience in the band.

“There were so many years where, for me, especially in the band and the first few years coming out of it, I'd just been terrified of it ending, because I didn't necessarily know who I was if I didn't do music,” Styles said.

Louis Tomlinson, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

During his press tour for his 2022 album, About Faith in the Future , Tomlinson shared with The Telegraph that he’d “be lying if it didn’t bother him at first” once Styles began to excel individually. He believed this was because he “didn’t know where to place myself, and really my only point of reference was other members of the band."

Louis Tomlinson, who said he wasn't on speaking terms with former One Direction bandmate Zayn Malik

Following their famous falling out in late 2015, Tomlinson revealed on the Zach Sang Show that he and Malik still weren’t on speaking terms. Sang asked Tomlinson how he felt about his friendship with Malik, to which he replied, “You’d have to ask him.” The singer continued, "There's been numerous times over the last couple of years where I've thought about him and hoped he's alright.”

Niall Horan, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

"[I vividly recall being in] all these amazing cities, but not being able to see them [because fans would surround our hotel],” Horan shared during a podcast episode of People, Just People . He recalled when fans would be "banging on car windows [before we could get out of the vehicle],” sharing he missed the luxury of simply going for a walk.

One Direction's Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles

While there was originally a rumor that the band was planning “something special” for their 10-year anniversary, unfortunately, nothing came to fruition. Almost all of them, however, recognized the milestone with heartfelt Instagram posts. Tomlinson captioned his post, “The memories we've shared together have been incredible. Can't believe its been 10 years already. Thanks for everything lads and love to you the fans as always x.”

Styles matched the sentiment, saying, "To the boys, I love you so much, and I couldn't be prouder of everything we achieved together. Here's to ten. H." Horan also tagged all of the bandmates, “Cheers to US today boys, and thank you to all you beautiful people who have supported us over the last 10 years."

Payne and Malik were noticeably offline.

Niall Horan, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

In a 2020 interview with British GQ , Horan provided insight into the very public feud with Malik. “As long as I’ve known him, Zayn’s been the hardest man to stay in touch with. Then we had a falling out a few years ago and, to be honest, that’s just the dynamic: you have people you are friends with and people you are not,” Horan said. He said he did aim to see the other boys and was especially close with Tomlinson.

Louis Tomlinson, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

As the 10th anniversary of 1D approached, the boys publicly looked back fondly on their lengthy run, Tomlinson especially. "I f*cking love the boys, and I love everything we've done together,” he shared in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone . “And I still miss my time with them. I think any of the boys would be lying if they said otherwise. It was a special time in our lives, definitely," he added.

Harry Styles hosting SNL, where he made a One Direction quip

In his first stint as a celebrity host on Saturday Night Live, Styles lightly referenced the 1D breakup. "I love those guys, they're my brothers: Niall, Liam, Louis, and, uh, Ringo, yeah, that's it,” Styles said in his introduction monologue. This cheeky pun was a callout to Malik being the first member to leave the band, similar to how Ringo Starr was the first to exit The Beatles.

Liam Payne, who has spoken about his time in One Direction

Payne shared with British GQ that a few years after the hiatus began, he started therapy. “I kind of went off the rails a little bit and just couldn't really figure out what was making me sad,” Payne said. “We spent the best part of five years in a band closed off from the world and I had to go through this really weird transition inside that band as the world, and then myself, came out of it.”

Louis Tomlinson, who has spoken about One Direction and his falling out with Zayn Malik

While there’s still uncertainty around what exactly went down between the boys and Malik, Tomlinson revealed on The Dan Wootton Interview podcast that an incident in 2016 caused tension.

Shortly after his mother passed away from leukemia in December 2016, Tomlinson was slated to perform on The X Factor . Instead of canceling, he dedicated his performance to her, and all of the boys, except Malik, attended to support him. "All the boys had agreed to come to that performance and he didn't show so that bugged me. It was just seeing everyone there — Harry, Niall, and Liam — that was what I needed that night, that support," he said.

Zayn Malik, who spoke about leaving One Direction

Between questions from British Vogue about his burgeoning relationship with Gigi Hadid, Malik debriefed his experience toward the band’s end. While he had maintained a reputation of dissing 1D, this time, he shared, “I’m able to look on it as something that was an amazing experience, which I was never even able to say until just recently. I think back to the performances towards the end, when we were in stadiums, I wasn’t ever able to enjoy the experience. The machine had gone too fast.”

Harry Styles greeting fans in 2017

In his first interview post-1D breakup, Styles told Rolling Stone he was upset that Malik viewed the band as “uncool.” "I think it's a shame he felt that way, but I never wish anything but luck to anyone doing what they love. If you're not enjoying something and need to do something else, you absolutely should do that. I'm glad he's doing what he likes, and good luck to him," Styles said.

Malik didn’t have any public response to Styles’ statement.

Zayn Malik, who said he didn't speak to his 1D bandmates

In a shocking turn of events at the time, Malik blatantly revealed to Billboard that he did not speak to any of the boys anymore. “Our relationships have definitely changed since we were in a band together, but I think that’s just life,” he said. “Everybody grows up; two of the guys have got kids now. But no, I don’t talk to any of them, really.” The publication stated that he felt no malice toward his ex-bandmates and wished them the best.

Zayn Malik, who spoke about leaving One Direction

As soon as Malik left One Direction, fans were eager to learn his plans. And once his profile with The Fader dropped in November, it became clear that he had left the band behind for good.

“There was never any room for me to experiment creatively in the band,” he said. “If I would sing a hook or a verse slightly R&B, or slightly myself, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop, generic as f*ck, so they could use that version.”

He also clarified that he “wasn’t 100% behind the music,” sharing, “It was music that was already given to us, and we were told this is what is going to sell to this people. As much as we were the biggest, most famous boy band in the world, it felt weird. We were told to be happy about something that we weren’t happy about.”
