JB Day Trip Itinerary — Where to Eat, Play and Shop Under S$70

day trip to jb from singapore

Go beyond your typical JB day trip to KSL and City Square while sticking to a friendly budget!

First published: 5 July 2022

Many of us head to Johor Bahru (JB) for one of two reasons: to shop or to cafe-hop. After all, cheap shopping steals are all there is to JB right? — Not exactly.

day trip to jb from singapore

It’s true that prices are cheaper across the Causeway, but there’s so much more to eat, play and shop in JB than just shopping malls or aesthetic cafes.

Apart from your familiar hot spots, this adventurous itinerary will show you how to zhng your JB day trip with panoramic skyline views, a bustling night market, and an exciting pop-up theme park.

Plus, you don’t have to spend much to enjoy these cool experiences at all!

JB Day Pre-trip Essentials

Friends together at Skyscape - Johor Day Trip

Before anything, you might want to secure some things for a hassle-free experience.

Connectivity: We booked a 4G eSIM Card, just enough for one day ( ~S$9 for 2.5GB/5 days via Klook)

Activities: Pre-purchase your tickets online for cheaper prices. For instance, we bought our tickets to Skyscape (also via Klook ) and saved ~S$4/adult.

*Pro-tip: Use the code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klook to get 5% off all activities with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15). Apply the promo code when you checkout. One-time use only!

Cash: Cards are accepted in malls and cafes, but not at traditional stalls like Salahuddin or the night market. Hence, we recommend changing cash for the trip. When paying for bigger ticket items in shopping malls, use multi-currency cards like YouTrip or Revolut to avoid lousy exchange rates.

Transportation: We have a dedicated section for getting around JB later on, but you might want to download Grab as it may be the cheaper option for groups. For instance, the bus to KSL from Customs costs RM2/pax but a Grab that can take four people costs RM5.

If you’re exploring regions beyond JB, then you might want to take a look at Klook’s All-in-One Value Pack for Malaysia . It’ll give you discount vouchers for activities, SIM cards, airport transfers, etc. You can save up to ~S$95 when you use all the vouchers included in the pack!

Budget Breakdown for JB Day Trip

(detailed breakdown for 1 pax here)

Getting to and around Johor Bahru (JB)

Johor Train - Johor Day Trip

There are three options to get to Johor Bahru via public transport: 1) Train from Woodlands Train Checkpoint (S$5 to JB and RM5 to SG) 2) Bus 160/170 from Opposite Kranji MRT Station , or Bus 170X from Kranji Station (S$1.25/ one-way journey) 3) Grab Bus from various locations like Changi Airport, Expo MRT, Marsiling MRT and more (from S$3 to S$11 per person)

The train ride is a more comfortable option at only S$5/one-way trip (S$5 to JB and RM5 to SG), without having to squeeze compared to the bus.

*Pro-tip: Pre-book your train tickets as seats get sold out quickly.

Meanwhile, public buses offer the flexibility of time without having to rush for your ride. At Kranji Station , all three buses to JB arrive every 15-20 mins (depending on road conditions). Or book a bus on the Grab app to secure a seat and ride in comfort!

You’ll have to alight at the Woodlands Checkpoint for immigration, before continuing your journey across the Causeway to Malaysia’s checkpoint.

A fuss-free option for groups of four (or more) is to share a one-way car transfer between Singapore and JB. There are car options that even seat up to 9 pax! You won’t need to alight at both checkpoints, and you can choose pick-up / drop-off points that suit your itinerary.

Opposite kranji mrt bus stop - JOhor Day Trip

When travelling around Johor for a day trip, Grab is an affordable and convenient option even for those on a budget. From Customs, a ride to KSL Mall costs about RM5, while further places like the Euro Fun Park cost only RM24.

To book a Grab, you’ll need to buy data for your day trip. Check out prices for data roaming with your service provider. Or, book a  4GB eSIM  (~S$9) via Klook.

9AM: Breakfast at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee

A short 15-minute walk from Customs, you’ll find the heritage street of Jalan Tan Hiok Nee . With various old-school eats and plenty of aesthetic cafes, Tan Hiok Nee is home to both the “old” and the “new” where trends and tradition co-exist.

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory

People queueing at Hiap Joo Bakery - Johor Day Trip

Be prepared to queue.

When visiting the Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory , you’ll probably find yourself in a long snaking line with people eager to get their hands on their delicious, fragrant banana cake.

While Hiap Joo Bakery does export its banana cakes to Singapore, the cheaper prices and joy of savouring these cakes fresh out of the oven are worth the trip down. Each box comes with 10 slices of cake, just enough to bring some home to your family!

Cost: RM12/box (~S$3.50) Opening hours: 7:30AM – 4:30PM, closed on Sun How to get there: 15min walk from JB CIQ Checkpoint ( Google Maps )

Restoran Hua Mui

Restoran Hua Mui Entrance - Johor Day Trip

Another great breakfast place to visit before cafes open at 10AM is the open-air eatery, Restoran Hua Mui .

Their signature Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM18.90) is what most people go here for, while their toasts and sandwiches are also available if you’re looking for something lighter.

Friends having breakfast at Restoran Hua Mui - Things to do in JB

We tried some interesting drinks that you won’t encounter much in Singapore, like the Kopi Gu You — coffee with butter (RM3.80) and the Three Layer Milk Tea, also known as the Milk Kopi (RM6.90).

Opening hours: 8AM – 5PM How to get there: 1min walk from Hiap Joo Bakery ( Google Maps )

Salahuddin Bakery

Salahuddin bakery pastries - Johor Day Trip

Salahuddin Bakery is one of JB’s oldest eateries and feels much like a living museum. Since opening back in 1937, they have retained their rustic and antique decor with Peranakan tiles, complete with old-school signages and calendars.

Salahuddin Bakery Oven - Johor Day Trip

Traditional bakes and pastries sold here include bread, cakes, and curry puffs — all baked in an old wood-fired oven. We tried the Karipap Ayam (RM3.50) and Sugar Puff (RM2), which is a good try if you like flaky and crumbly pastries!

Opening hours: 9AM – 6PM, closed on Fri How to get there: 2min walk from Restoran Hua Mui ( Google Maps )

11AM: Hunt for Instagrammable Street Art

Girl posing at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee street art - JB Day Trip

Before the midday sun hits, take a stroll around Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and its nearby streets. You’ll find vibrant street art and olden architecture that make for good outdoor photo spots!

There are several interesting murals and painted pillars along Jalan Trus and Jalan Ibrahim as well. We saw a large dugong on the side of a building along Jalan Ibrahim! Let us know in the comments if you spot any, and where 🕵️

12PM: Cafe-hopping

The Replacement Cafe - Things to do in JB

Trust us when we say that Jalan Tan Hiok Nee has plenty of cafes — we saw about 10 cafes within a short 15-minute walk around the neighbourhood.

The well-known ones here are The Replacement – Lodge & Kitchen , Chaiwalla & Co. Container Cafe or Flowers in the Window . But here are a few more to check out:

Bev C’afe

Friends at Bev C'afe - Things to do in JB

With rustic, woody interiors, Bev C’afe is relatively small but cosy. According to their menu, they serve what they like to eat! We found unique creations such as the Jackfruit Cheesecake (RM10) and Leicha Cake (RM16).

Food items at Bev C'afe - Things to do in JB

The Jackfruit Cheesecake is an interesting try, albeit a little tiny. The strong scent of jackfruit didn’t overpower the taste of the cake — overall, it produced a delicious but balanced flavour. The Citrus Honey Lemon Soda (RM14) also paired well with it and makes for a refreshing finish.

The cafe is located on the second floor, above the Bev C concept store .

Opening hours: 10AM – 6PM, closed on Wed How to get there: 1min walk from Salahuddin Bakery ( Google Maps )

Interior of Offee Cafe - Things to do in JB

Recommended by the staff at a now defunct gallery nearby, Offee Cafe boasts a sleek, white modern interior.

One can probably guess what it’s known for — yes, coffee! ☕️ They serve interesting creations including the Coconut Latte (RM12) and Oat Latte (RM12).

Friends drinking coffee at Offee Cafe - Johor Day Trip

While I’m more of a tea person, coffee lovers Shai and Bren gave the cafe and its coffee an 8/10 for its taste and ambience.

Opening hours: 8AM – 12AM How to get there: 1min walk from Bev C’afe ( Google Maps )

Bonus: Principle Cafe by T.A.M. (Jalan Trus)

Principle Cafe by T.A.M. at Jalan Trus - JB Day Trip

Special mention goes to Principle Cafe at Jalan Trus . It’s a 10-minute walk from Bev C’afe and Offee Cafe, but only a stone’s throw from our next stop in this JB itinerary.

The menu is pretty extensive, serving up breakfast items, pizzas, pastas, and a variety of cakes and tarts. We tried their Hojicha Terrine Tart (RM13) which had an intense hojicha taste and was ✨not too sweet ✨.

Hojicha Terrine Tart and coffee at Principle Cafe at Jalan Trus - JB Day Trip

Not gonna lie — prices are slightly higher than average, but worth it for the quality of its dishes and all-around zen vibes. Plus, you can now pre-purchase dining vouchers via Klook to save up to 20% off your bill!

Opening hours: 8:30AM – 6PM How to get there: 11min walk from Offee Cafe ( Google Maps )

2PM: Panoramic Skyline Views at Skyscape

Girl overlooking scenery at Skyscape - Johor Day Trip

Skyscape is most famous for the glass-floored sky bridge located on the 33rd floor.

At 149m above ground, the translucent glass floor may be challenging for people with acrophobia (fear of heights) — although Bren took it alright! Here, we enjoyed a panoramic overview of Johor Bahru and the Causeway bridge.

Friends looking at scenery at Skyscape - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Skyscape also offers complimentary activities included in your ticket, like virtual reality games, access to the observation deck, and the TikTok-famous LED tunnel amongst others.

We pre-booked our Skyscape adventure through Klook , so that all we had to do was have our QR code scanned at the entrance.

Cost: ~S$10.30/pax , RM5 (~S$1.50) for shoe covers (paid on site) Opening hours: 9:30AM – 5:30PM, last entry at 4PM How to get there: 5min walk from Principle Cafe ( Google Maps )

3PM: Shop Near KSL City Mall

KSL City Mall is no stranger to most Singaporeans; it’s easily accessible via Grab or by a feeder bus at Customs. You’re guaranteed to have something to do here as they have many establishments like KTVs, massage parlours, and shopping options.

But other than shopping inside the mall, step outside and you’ll find new interesting places to explore.

Avery-Day Convenience Concept Store

Avery Day Convenience Store Entrance - Things to do in Johor Bahru

For all snack-lovers like myself, this unique convenience concept store could most probably make for your dream snack heaven 😍

Located outside KSL City Mall at the CBTL entrance, Avery Day sells snacks from various countries: Thailand, Taiwan, China, Korea, Japan… you name it. We recognised some familiar snacks but bought those that are less commonly found in SG.

Yoghurt Bottles - Things to do in Johor Bahru

For example, this Taiwanese yoghurt drink (RM9.90) caught our eyes as it came in the shape of a milk bottle. We can’t remember the last time we drank from milk bottles but we decided to try it once again that day.

It did feel weird drinking from a teat, but the yoghurt was tangy and refreshing.

Snacks at Avery Day - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Hot snacks like fried chicken, fries, and nuggets are also available. After you’ve done your shopping, you can enjoy your snacks at the outdoor sitting area on the second floor!

Opening hours: 9AM – 12AM How to get there: ~8min taxi/Grab ride from Skyscape ( Google Maps )

Pasar Karat

Pasar Karat Night Market - Johor Day Trip

Take a step out of Avery Day and join the crowds at Pasar Karat . It’s a night market that stretches a few hundred metres down the street and will probably take a good 30 minutes to walk down the entire lane.

Pasar Karat JB Bazaar Chendol - Things to do in Johor Bahru

There were many stalls selling local delights such as fried carrot cake, Assam laksa, BBQ skewers, chendol (iced green jelly dessert) — we were absolutely spoilt for choice. We had a great dinner snacking on a little bit of everything.

Some stalls also sold everyday items like nail cutters, fire starters, and water bottles that make for good souvenirs to bring home.

Entrance fee: Free Opening hours: 6PM – 2AM, closed on Mon How to get there: 15min taxi/Grab ride from Avery Day ( Google Maps )

7PM: Pop-up theme park at Euro Fun Park

Euro Fun Park Entrance - Johor Day Trip

To end off the night with a bang, visit Euro Fun Park , a pop-up theme park!

The rides here are pretty thrilling — I dare say they’re better than your typical neighbourhood fairs. Our top choices were definitely the Vortex and Space Flyer.

Space Flyer Euro Fun Park - Johor Bahru Day Trip

The Vortex takes you cartwheeling high up into the air while you spin around endlessly for a fun yet dizzy experience. The Space Flyer takes the usual spinning chair carnival ride but goes up high to 30m in height.

Euro Fun Park Ferris Wheel - Things to do in Johor Bahru

Rides are paid in tokens (RM2 each). For instance, the Vortex requires 15 tokens while the Space Flyer requires 10 tokens.

Entrance fee: RM5 (excl. cost of rides) Opening hours: 7PM – 12AM

*Note: The theme park occasionally shifts around to different locations in Malaysia. Check their website for updates before you go!

Planning your Budget JB Day Trip

Outside Offee Cafe - Things to do in Johor Bahru

A day trip to JB can be lighter on the pocket if you plan ahead! That means pre-booking activities that you want to do, having your multi-currency cards ready, and planning which transportation to use. That way, you’ll have more money for the fun stuff like shopping and cafe-hopping!

And don’t forget to check out Klook’s Great JB Getaway Page for special deals on food and activity bookings!

*Pro-tip: Use the code <THETRAVELINTERN> on Klook to get 5% off all activities with a min. spend of S$50 (discount cap at S$15). Apply the promo code when you checkout. One-time use only!

Kam Long Fish Head Soup - JB Itinerary

Save on cafe-hopping with discounted dining vouchers or skip the queue for popular food spots like Kam Long Ah Zai Curry Fish Head 💁🏻‍♀️ There are options for the Signature Curry Fish Head or Fish Tail (meat only), in S/M/L portions that serve up to six pax!

Johor Bahru Streets - Things to do in JB

I’ve been guilty of sticking to shopping malls on my usual visits to Johor Bahru (thank the weather 🥵), but this day trip to JB got me wanting to explore more of the city’s not-so-hidden gems that I’ve long overlooked.

One such area is Taman Mount Austin, a 20 to 30-minute drive from the JB City Centre. Aside from aesthetic cafes , there are interesting activity centres and craft workshops where you can tuft your own rugs or try your hand at decoden . Check out our 3D2N JB Itinerary for more things to do on a weekend trip!

The ultimate Johor Bahru day trip itinerary that isn’t KSL or City Square (tried & tested!)

From a Singaporean who goes to JB every other weekend.

I love going to Johor Bahru (JB). I mean, who doesn’t? It’s affordable, it’s good, and you can do almost everything and anything you want for less compared to Singapore.

As someone who frequently crosses the border for food, entertainment, shopping and massages, I feel the need to share some of my best JB haunts with other Singaporeans (hence this post).

Now, unlike other articles that just give you the “Top 10 best things to do and eat with JB”, I’m going to provide you with an entire tried-and-tested itinerary (along with some travelling hacks) so that you don’t have to think about picking your favourites and then using Google Maps to string your entire trip together.

The ultimate one-day JB itinerary 2024

‘Cos we’re lazy chill and laid back, we shall start planning to enter Malaysia at about 11am.

If you drive: Check Motorist.sg for live traffic camera feed at Woodlands Checkpoint before entering.

If you’re taking public transport: The jam can be a turn-off, especially on weekends. Here are some hacks I’ve discovered over my many years of crossing the border.

  • Option 1: Consider walking across the border (yes, walking) when the jam gets really bad. I’ve done it before and it took me only about 30 minutes.
  • Option 2: Pay someone off (unofficially) to take you across the border.

Usually, public buses will take the bus lane, so it’s not that bad of a jam compared to driving. But I know, sometimes upon exiting Singapore immigration, you’ll get a shock at how loooong the queue is for the SBS bus into JB.

Now, don’t queue. Instead, walk over to the private bus bay. You may notice several blue buses called “Bas Pekerja”, which essentially means “employee” or “worker” bus. They ferry Malaysian workers back and forth daily. Simply get on it, and ask the driver if they’re okay with you hitching a ride to Malaysia Customs (usually they’re agreeable). Upon getting down, pay around 2 to 3RM directly to the driver.

Morning: Brunch at Kopilicious

day trip to jb from singapore

After makan-ing (eating) at many restaurants and coffee shops in Malaysia, my favourite go-to for breakfast or brunch is Kopilicious, which has two branches in JB.

The Taman Sentosa branch is an eight minute drive from the customs, while the Taman Molek branch is 16 minutes away.

What you should eat and drink: Their signature cold coffee (3.50RM) and mee siam rendang (12.50RM).

Now, I’m not exactly a food writer so I’ll keep it short — Freaking. Delicious. And I’m not even a spice eater. The mee siam rendang had a spicy yet savoury kick that left me wanting more after each bite. Heck, I was even thinking about it for weeks after my trip.

If you have yet to try Kopilicious, try it on your next trip. I promise it’s worth it.

day trip to jb from singapore

In the afternoon: Discover Mount Austin

After brunch, head over to Mount Austin’s Shiba Cafe — It’s time to play with some furbabies!

Mount Austin is just a 10 min drive from Kopilicious’ Taman Molek branch or a 15 min drive from the Taman Sentosa branch.

Price-wise, you’ll pay around 20RM~ for an hour with the doggos and it comes with one drink. It is open from 10am to 8pm daily, with 3pm to 4pm being the dogs’ break.

day trip to jb from singapore

We had fun playing with all types of dogs, including huskies, shiba inus, toy poodles and more. Reservations in advance are required, and you can WhatsApp them at +60 11-1193-9795.

For people who aren’t that interested in dog cafes, you can also do your nails at Sasa Nails House or go for a three hour karaoke sesh at SING V KTV at super affordable prices — both within walking distance of the dog cafe.

There’s also a really great, big mall in the Austin area that’s around a 10 minute drive away called AEON Tebrau that is linked to Toppen Mall and IKEA — you might want to spend another full day here if you choose to stay the night.

Sasa Nails House: I remember paying roughly around S$60~ for a french gel manicure and pedicure — and as a ‘chor lor’ (rough) person, I was surprised that my nails lasted for months without chipping off.

SING V KTV: This karaoke branch can go as low as 0.50RM for three hours per person on a weekday afternoon. However, I think we paid around S$10~ for three hours per person with unlimited drinks. Still very affordable.

AEON Tebrau: Your shopping haven. Movies, food, fashion, groceries… Anything you want, this mall has it.

At night: Danga Bay

day trip to jb from singapore

If you like theme parks, this one’s for you.

Okay, truth be told, the thrill is not from the rides — it’s the safety of those rides. You might fall off and die, who knows. But that’s what makes it exciting. Just kidding. I’ve been there countless times, rode on all their cute, rickety rides and have had to any incidents… Yet.

But for real though, you should check it out. Located around a 20 minute drive from Mount Austin, this is where you’ll want to go after all the shops and malls have closed for the night.

Once the sun sets, you’ll see a bunch of local families hanging out at Danga Bay with their kids, taking rides, buying LED balloons, riding on rented PMDs/bicycles/carriages, and more. Think of it as a mini Pasar Malam (night market) and a theme park in one — that closes no earlier than 12am.

I would not recommend eating dinner there though, as the restaurants there are not cheap — it’s mostly a bunch of Chinese restaurants selling seafood by weight. But as for snacks inside the park itself (as you can see those tents behind us in the pic above), I would say go for it. There are donuts, drinks, and other food sold by individual vendors at very reasonable prices.

The park is free to enter, but you’ll have to pay for rides. Each ride costs about 2RM to 10RM, which we’re okay to pay for hours of fun.

We played bumper cars, a roller coaster in the dark, the Viking ship, as well as a cycling ride suspended in the air called Galactic Ring which looks something like this:

day trip to jb from singapore

I found this ride to be the most “dangerous” as you are on a high track above the ground and honestly, it’s an old theme park so you can see everything from that height, including what looks like a huge metal junkyard with rusty pipes and wires sticking out from the ground directly below one part of the tracks. I would hate to imagine if someone accidentally fell out of the ride during that segment.

Also, hold onto your phone. Tightly. Very tightly.

day trip to jb from singapore

After midnight: Massage and Supper

How can we ever forget about getting a massage in JB?

After playing up a storm, head over to Bangkok Family Spa at Permas Jaya for a well-deserved message.

Tons of Singaporeans enjoy going to Bangkok Spa (nearer to customs), but in my opinion, after having tried both spas multiple times, I would say that Bangkok Family Spa is better.

It’s the same price and also less crowded than Bangkok Spa, and there’s free transport to and fro customs/KSL area. It’s clean, quiet (no clock ticking sounds, thank goodness) and sometimes you may even get an individual room (where it’s a door instead of curtains) if you opt for a solo aromatherapy massage.

The spa is located around a 15 minute drive from Danga Bay.

day trip to jb from singapore

At only around S$20 for an hour of Traditional Thai Massage, I would say that massages are a MUST DO in JB.

I personally always go for two hours of their Aromatherapy Massage, because I think oil hits better.

day trip to jb from singapore

Click here for their full service menu and price list .

You can message them on WhatsApp at +60 11-1081-5555 to make reservations.

After you’ve gotten all the knots out of your body, step outside of the spa and you’ll immediately see a lok lok truck next door blasting Chinese EDM music. I don’t know the name of it, or what time it opens and closes. Sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not, depending on the owner’s mood, I guess. But 80% of the time I go to the spa, that lok lok truck is open.

Grab some food, drinks, chill and when you’re done, get the spa’s transport to send you to customs for free.

Hotel recommendation

If it’s too late and you choose to stay, here’s a hotel I’d totally recommend:  Midori Concept at Austin Heights .

Having stayed there multiple times, I can assure you that this hotel is clean, beds are comfortable and their high-powered shower is all you need for a good night’s rest.

The Ultimate Travel Guide from Singapore to Johor Bahru

Transtar Cross Border Service

There are several modes of transportation available for you when travelling from Singapore to Johor Bahru or vice versa. These include travelling from SG to JB by bus, taxi, train, private vehicle, or charter van/bus. However, flying is not an option because there are currently no direct flights from Singapore’s Changi Airport to Johor Bahru Senai Airport.

In this travel guide, let us take a closer look at each mode of transportation and the information related to travelling to Johor Bahru.

TRAVEL CHECKLIST

To avoid any disruptions to your trip to JB, make sure you have all of your travel necessities in order before you begin packing. In addition to a valid passport , the following documents will be necessary for you to travel to Malaysia successfully.

Vehicle Insurance

If you are driving to Johor Bahru, make sure your vehicle insurance is up to date, as all vehicles entering Malaysia are required to be insured. Examine whether it covers your time in Johor Bahru and, in the case of an unexpected event, whether the coverage amount is adequate. Before you travel, go over your insurance policy and make any necessary changes.

Travel Insurance

Even though travel insurance is no longer required to visit Malaysia, it can provide peace of mind, especially since unforeseen circumstances can disrupt your travel plans. You can purchase an annual insurance plan or a single-trip plan based on your travel needs. In any case, this purchase can be cost-effective in the long run.

Touch ‘N Go Card

When driving to Johor Bahru (JB), you can use the Touch ’n Go card to pay for highway and checkpoint tolls. For Singaporeans travelling to Malaysia, it is a dual-currency cross-border contactless smart card.

These cards feature two electronic wallets with SGD and MYR funds that are non-transferable between them. However, top-up opportunities are available in both countries at various locations.

Whether you’re travelling from SG to JB by bus or any other mode of transportation, this card will prove useful. It can be used to pay for MRT fees and parking, as well as for retail and dining, in order to earn reward points.

Vaccination

All visitors are allowed to enter Malaysia, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status. There are no COVID-19 tests or quarantine requirements upon arrival or prior to departure.

Vehicle Entry Permit

Anyone travelling to Johor Bahru in a private vehicle (foreign-registered) will require a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP). You can apply for one via the VEP-JPJ portal, and downloading a PDF of your log card from the LTA (Land Transport Authority) can help with the registration process. Until your VEP RFID tag is ready for collection, you can use the VEP confirmation slip or TNG card as a substitute. Once you have successfully registered for a VEP account, you can use it indefinitely.

BORDER CHECKPOINTS

Whether you are travelling from SG to JB by bus or using any other mode of transportation, you will pass through two border checkpoints. Woodlands CIQ and JB CIQ are the main and oldest checkpoints and are commonly referred to as the ‘First link’.This checkpoint’s building is known as ‘Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI)’.

The second and newer border checkpoints are SG Tuas CIQ and JB Second Link CIQ, which are commonly known as ‘Second Link’ or ‘Tuas.’ The building name for this checkpoint is ‘Sultan Abu Bakar.’

Both checkpoints are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and your travel destination will decide which checkpoint you will pass through on your way to Johor Bahru.

If you are travelling to Johor Bahru City Square, JB Sentral Bus Terminal , Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Jalan Dhoby, and Komtar JBCC, your bus will use the first link. These locations are ideal for food hunting, café hopping, shopping, and hanging out at malls.

However, if you want to go to Legoland, Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, or Johor Premium Outlet, your bus will travel through the second link.

HOW TO TRAVEL TO JOHOR BAHRU FROM SINGAPORE

Self-driving and private taxi.

Taking your own private vehicle or a private taxi to JB is one of the most flexible modes of transportation, because you can choose your own route and travel time. However, while both are more convenient than other modes of transportation, they are also more expensive, either due to fuel costs or service fees. Depending on the route, travel time could range from 30 minutes to an hour.

The railway is a fast and convenient way to travel from Singapore to Johor Bahru, allowing you to travel comfortably while avoiding the frequently congested causeway traffic. The Shuttle Tebrau, a KTM high-speed train, takes only 5 minutes to travel from the Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral. However, keep in mind that train tickets should be purchased as soon as possible because they are limited in availability.

Charter Van or Bus

There are numerous companies that provide dependable charter van and bus services between Singapore and JB. They offer personalised services such as luggage assistance, as well as tours of Johor Bahru. The vehicles are air-conditioned and spacious, and they will take you to the most popular destinations in JB throughout your journey.

Travelling from SG to JB by bus is one of the most popular ways for visitors to travel between these two locations, as it is the most cost-effective option. The bus fare is reasonable, and the journey takes up to 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, travel times can be influenced by weather, traffic, and travel seasons. Unless there is a delay owing to one of the aforementioned factors, the bus should reach its destination within 2 hours. The bus fare is also affected by the operator, the type of bus chosen, and the season of travel.

Cross-border service by Transtar Cross Border offers comfortable and convenient cross-border experience as you will get to sit throughout the journey and does not need to stand in a packed bus. Passengers can plan ahead of time by comparing bus prices and schedules. Buses run from 8 in the morning to 10:35 at night, and their pick-up and drop-off locations vary depending on the route they take.

S'poreans make day trips to JB on first day of borders fully reopening

day trip to jb from singapore

JOHOR BARU - He used to drive over to Johor Baru often to eat and buy his favourite pastries for his friends and family.

But because of the Covid-19 pandemic and its restrictions on travel, Singaporean Jeremy Chua has been unable to do so for two years.

With the full opening of land borders between Singapore and Malaysia on Friday (April 1), Mr Chua seized the opportunity for quarantine- and testing-free travel and drove over to JB.

He was speaking to The Straits Times outside Hiap Joo Bakery in Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, where he was getting his pastry fix.

He said: "I'm very happy that the border has now opened. And now whenever I am having a craving for a coconut bun or banana cake, I can just drive over."

Mr Chua, a 32-year-old financial planner, who drove over to JB alone, said that while the border has opened, the crowds have yet to return.

"I notice the place is a lot more quiet since the last time I was here. A lot of shops were not open when I drove past this stretch. I hope everything will be back to normal in the next few months, with the opening of the borders."

While more than 33,000 travellers had crossed the Causeway and Second Link as at 5pm on Friday after the borders fully reopened, this is way below the 415,000 who used the land checkpoints daily before the pandemic.

Mr Jayden Wong, 26, and his girlfriend Denise Quek, 25, were in JB on Friday even though they had not planned to do so.

This was after they found out that the traffic into JB was not so bad. Mr Wong said: "It was our day off today, which coincided with the opening of the borders, so we made an impromptu decision to come."

The two, who are both Singapore public servants, said they plan to visit a supermarket to buy snacks and then get a massage before heading home for the day.

A Singaporean, who wanted to be known only as Mr Ramli, said he drove into JB at about 7am with a friend.

The 58-year-old private-hire car driver said he was there partly to check if going to JB was smooth-going, as he plans to take his wife along next week.

He said: "Most of the shops that I have visited before are still around. The only difference is that they are less crowded than before."

The exception was a car accessory shop, which he said was busy with many Singapore-registered cars parked outside it.

He added: "Malaysians I met today welcomed us back. Even at the shop where I bought my Malaysia SIM card, the shopkeeper told me that he hopes more of us can come as soon as possible."

For Mr Chua, the pastry shop is just the first stop on his culinary quest.

"Since I have a couple of hours left before I go home, I will drive around to see if the shops that I used to patronise are still around," he said as he took his leave, adding that there is a famous shop that sells abalone noodles not far away.

9. Indulge in dessert at Yamada Beancurd

Following dinner, treating yourself to dessert is a must (right?). I highly suggest paying a visit to Yamada Beancurd to savour the authentic beancurd offered by this iconic food truck. However, it’s important to note that their operation is limited to just 4 hours , so make sure to act promptly!

Opt for your preferred beancurd flavour from a selection of three: Pandan (RM3.50) , Pure Gula Melaka (RM3) , or White Sugar (RM3) . Elevate the taste experience by adding various toppings, including peach gum (RM3), freshly-made black sugar pearls (RM2), red bean (RM2), grass jelly (RM2), corn (RM2), or orange potato balls (RM2 for 5 pieces).

There are also 4 different beancurd creations you can choose from such as the Signature Beancurd (RM8) , You-Gan Beancurd (RM8) , Man-Pai Beancurd (RM8) , and the Dessert Beancurd (RM8) .

10. End the night at a carnival

What could be more idyllic than concluding your day by the seaside? At Danga Bay Park , you can appreciate the ocean breeze while participating in nostalgic carnival activities.

Embark on a journey through time as you hop on the Carousell (RM2) , complete with enchanting lights and music that will evoke a sense of nostalgia. Seeking more excitement? Head to the Bumper Cars (RM8) and share a laugh as you collide with your friends. You can also revel in other timeless theme park rides like the Ferris Wheel (RM8) , Spinning Tea Cups (RM8) , or Pirate Ship (RM8) .

If relaxation is on your agenda, consider a leisurely stroll along the sandy beach, where you can take in the scenic vistas of the horizon. Settle along the shoreline and unwind with your loved ones.

OPINION - Vladimir Putin may be weeks away from a breakthrough in Ukraine but the West is asleep

There is a growing understanding across the Western allies that Ukraine is losing the ground war against Russia, and by summer could face defeat. Russia is pounding front lines with artillery, rocket and drone fire — and at over five times the rate the Ukrainian army can reply. Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops are exhausted — after sustaining in some sectors a heavier concentration of incoming artillery than at the Somme in 1916, or the Normandy Bocage after D-Day in 1944.

Things to do

Explore JB's heritage buildings

Explore JB's heritage buildings

JB, like Singapore, is a melting pot of cultures and religions. Find out more about this diversity by strolling along the Johor Bahru Heritage Walk and popping into the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, Sri Raja Mariamman Temple, Sikh Gurwara Sahib and the Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple along the way.  Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple  is one of the top attractions in Johor Bahru. It's the only glass Hindu temple in the world with 500,000 pieces of colored glass lining its walls and ceilings. In contrast to the modernity of the glass temple, there's the  Old Chinese Temple that was built in 1862,156 years ago. It is one of the oldest buildings in Johor and you can find old paintings on the doors and walls depicting stories of its past.

Run wild at Johor Zoo

Run wild at Johor Zoo

Even if you've been to the Singapore Zoo, the Johor Zoo is still worth checking out. Entry costs a nominal RM2 per adult to view a small range of animals like tigers, tapirs, crocodiles, hippopotamuses, camels, reptiles and birds. After you’re done here – it should take about 20 minutes to cover the grounds – you can hop on over to the next destination.

Immerse yourself in Chinese culture

Immerse yourself in Chinese culture

Did you know that Johor was a predominantly Chinese state back in the day? Or that planting pineapples propelled the state to become one of Malaysia’s top fruit producers? Housed in a four-story building, the Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum (RM6/adult, RM3/child) is packed with various artifacts and documentation on display, old coins and notes, music instruments, photos, porcelain and more paraphernalia that'll teach you more about the Chinese population living here in the past. Read up on how the local Chinese planted pepper and gambier and the differences it made to the Malaysian economy.

Make a splash at Austin Heights

Make a splash at Austin Heights

Now, if the kids (or you) would rather splash around and have fun, Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park has tons to offer. The entrance is flanked by the Adventure Rope Course which features 51 different challenges. Venture deeper into the establishment, and you’ll find multiple water slides and pools where you can bask under the sun. If you’d rather not get wet, head over to the Indoor Trampoline Centre and bounce your way to fitness or let your need for speed out at the Drift Kart course upfront.

Pick fruits straight from the tree

Pick fruits straight from the tree

An hour’s drive away from Woodlands Checkpoint is a 180-acre farm. Sure, it’s not within the city, but if you’ve never experienced the thrill of standing under a durian tree during durian season, it’s worth the trip. As long as no one gets hurt.  Desaru Fruit Farm  has over 40 types of tropical fruits and an average tour of the land takes about 20 minutes. If you come in time for lunch, there’s an option to dine on-site and be treated to fruits as part of the meal. Stay till the sun dips below the horizon and take a 40-minute river cruise to see fireflies. Those little critters just amp up the magic factor to make your trip a memorable one.

Where to eat

Roost Café and Bistro

Roost Café and Bistro

You know you've arrived at Jalan Dhoby when you spot Roost Café and Bistro. Entering the café is like stepping into a two-storey time machine – think mid-century sofas, antique telephone sets, mini jukeboxes and ornate mirrors, relics of a bygone time. The food menu is based on co-owner Sea Wong’s family recipes and the drinks are served in small, colourful buckets. When you’re done dining and drinking, pop over to Miss Ireen Handmade and The Girl Next Door: the custom accessories boutique, and designer/vintage store and hairdressing salon share an al fresco area with Roost.

9 Jln Dhoby (+60 1 6776 7489). Mon-Sat noon-4pm, 6pm-midnight; Sun 6pm-midnight.

People & Places

People & Places

A hangout for JB's cool kids, People & Places Cafe is inspired by Melbourne's famed brunch scene. Decked out in industrially-inspired interiors and floor-to-ceiling glass walls with potted plants at every turn, the cafe is an insta-approved spot.

It's best for all-day breakfast. Try out the Quesadilla breakkie (RM25) with fluffy Tomyam scrambled eggs, chicken ham, sliced tomatoes, Alexa's Sriracha aioli, coriander, and Belgium cheddar cheese sandwiched between tortilla sheets. Those looking for healthier options can consider Keto-friendly dishes such as the pan-fried salmon fillet, kimchi, cauliflower rice (RM34.90), kale spinach, beetroot poached egg, lemon mustard cream and toasted sesame seeds.

6 Jalan Kencana Emas 2/3, Kawasan Perindustrian Tebrau 3, (+60 7-351 5303,  www.facebook.com/peopleandplacescafe ).  Mon-Thurs 10am-6pm; Fri-Sun 10am-9pm.

Flowers in the Window

Flowers in the Window

Littered with ferns and flowers, this cosy café smells like you’re taking a trek through the crisp rainforests of Malaysia. The first floor can feel a little cramped, but head upstairs for more comfy seats to lounge in. Since Flowers in the Window is run by the same people behind Roost, the menu is similar. The Hainanese chicken rice noodles (RM14) is unlike anything we’ve tried in Singapore: the noodles are thick, chewy and sticky, perfect for the sweet and spicy sauce. The chicken is lightly battered and fried, but not too greasy. Drinks and desserts also pick up on the floral theme – try the lavender pineapple juice (RM15.90) and lemon meringue curd (RM16).

9 Jln Dhoby (+60 1 6776 7489). Mon & Wed-Sun 10am-10pm.

Atan Burger Truck

Atan Burger Truck

Burger trucks are all the rage in Johor Bahru, and you can find one when wandering through its alleys. Atan Burger Truck is known for its mouthwatering, juicy burgers at affordable prices.

Tuck into Atan's popular double cheese chicken burger (RM5.50), made from Ramly chicken patty and drizzled with smoky sweet BBQ sauce, cheesy melted cheese, and a mixture of sauces and spices. Feeling adventurous? We dare you to order either the rabbit meat (from RM6.50) or ostrich (from RM6.50).

Taman Pelangi Indah, parking lot next to the Caltex Petrol Station ( +60 19-762 8797,  www.facebook.com/pages/Atan-Burger/287473944697240 ). Mon-Sat 8.30pm-3.30am.

The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen

The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen

Compared to other cafés ‘round these parts decked out in crazy decor, The Replacement stands out with its minimalist design. Natural light bounces off white walls and the marble bar, giving the spartan café a warm glow. Out of all the cafés we tried during our JB trail, The Replacement undoubtedly has the best food. Order the soft shell crab bao with fries (RM29.90): the crispy texture of the soft shell crab has a nice contrast to the soft, homemade bao bun. For dessert, get a plate of piping hot churros (RM16.90) with your choice of dip – there’s salted caramel, dark chocolate, hazelnut Nutella and the ever-coveted salted egg yolk sauce.

TIP The Ice-Cream Project

TIP The Ice-Cream Project

At this pint-sized Jalan Dhoby storefront – which, by the way, has a swing for a seat – the staff offer a twist on traditional ice cream with the help of some good ol’ liquid nitrogen. Lest you start your naysay – ‘But liquid nitrogen ice cream is nothing new!’ – let the freshest, finest ice cream this side of Malaysia do the talking. There are only four fuss-free flavours: original in milk, chocolate, brownie and cream, and butterscotch. But less is more, especially when it comes to tried-and-tested classics. Order a scoop of the original, top it off with a hot, homemade chocolate chip cookie, and wash it down with a glass of milk; it’s as deceptively decadent, yet truly wholesome as any ice cream treat there is. There’s coffee, too, but we suggest you pick from the extensive Gryphon tea menu. 31 Jln Dhoby (+60 7-300 7286, www.facebook.com/tipdonttilt ). Tue-Thu & Sun 3-10pm; Fri & Sat 3pm-midnight.

Rowan & Parsley Food Atelier

Rowan & Parsley Food Atelier

Probably the prettiest cafe in JB, Rowan & Parsley Food Atelier is tucked within an industrial estate along Jalan Kota. Enter its iconic, arch iron gates and you'll be greeted by an enchanted garden with fruit trees and lush greenery.

The cafe itself is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass panels, evoking industrial-chic sophistication. While you're there, don't miss the desserts like the Peanut Chocolate Pie.

17 Jalan Cenderai 20, Taman Perindustrian Kota Puteri (+607-382 1760,  www.facebook.com/rowan.parsley ). Sun-Thu 11.30am-11pm; Fri&Sun 11am-11.30pm.

Sangkaya

With an unassuming façade and name, we weren’t expecting much from Sangkaya. And when the small, hollowed-out husk of a young coconut arrived with four scoops of ice cream, we were still not convinced. But from the first bite, we knew there was a reason for Sangkaya’s confidence in serving only  coconut ice cream. The ice cream is thick, creamy and tasted better than those we’ve had in Bangkok. Yes, even the ones from Chatuchak. While we only sampled the original (from RM2.90), it also comes flavoured with Thai milk tea, green tea or chocolate. Order a combo set and get any ice cream and coconut water at RM12.90.

14 Jln Dhoby (+60 3 8938 9889, sangkaya.co). Mon-Thu & Sun 1pm-11pm; Fri & Sat noon-midnight.

Chaiwalla & Co. Container Cafe

Chaiwalla & Co. Container Cafe

Housed in a repurposed shipping container, Chaiwalla is the place to stop for a tall glass of iced Thai milk tea – best paired with a box of banana cake from the nearby Hiap Joo Bakery, an old-school joint that still churns out buns in its charcoal oven. Aside from the popular classic Thai milk tea, it also has cold saffron tea, Thai green milk tea and black tea among other beverages for a quick refuel.

36, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru .  Mon-Thu & Sun noon-midnight; Fri & Sat noon-1am.

Bev C'afe

Don’t be confused when you first step into Bev C'afe – the café is on the second floor. The first floor is a retail space that houses fashion basics, mostly in either black or white. Once you’re happy with your purchase, climb up the narrow staircase and order yourself some coffee and snacks to refuel. Or, if you feel daring enough, you could rest your head on the decorative bed laid out in the middle of the café. The house special espresso ice cube (RM13.90) is a hot favourite. Shots of coffee are frozen into cubes and served with a side of milk – this way, you can enjoy a cold cuppa without diluting it with ice.

54 Jln Tan Hiok Nee (+60 7 221 3530, www.facebook.com/BevCclothingbrand ). Tue-Sun 11am-8pm.

Singaporeans shopping and dining in JB causing concern for Johoreans’ cost of living

MALAYSIA: Singaporeans pushing up demand is a cause for concern in Johor Bahru’s (JB) cost of living.

The president of Johor Bahru Befrienders, Mr Danny Loo, has voiced concerns over the escalating cost of living in Johor Bahru, with Singaporeans significantly contributing to shopping and dining in JB.

The Star reports Mr Loo highlighted that many residents, especially working adults aged between 30 and 50, are feeling the pinch of these rising expenses, with equal numbers of men and women.

Mr Loo said that the surge in demand from across the border in Singapore has contributed to inflated prices, particularly in essential commodities like food.

He noted that the situation has led to financial worries among locals, with an increasing number turning to Johor Bahru Befrienders seeking assistance.

According to him, “ Feedback from our volunteers indicate that callers are concerned with the hike in food prices and their reduced purchasing power.”

Operating primarily as a helpline, Johor Bahru Befrienders experiences a surge in calls during the late evening hours, when individuals are more likely to reflect on their day and seek support.

“ We receive more calls between 9.30pm and midnight although we operate from 1pm ,” Mr Loo explained. “ People are less preoccupied towards the end of the day. “

The beginning of 2024 posed significant financial challenges for many, particularly with the expenses associated with Chinese New Year celebrations and the following return to hometowns.

Families with school-going children faced additional financial burdens, having to allocate more funds for necessities.

With the upcoming Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities, Mr Loo anticipates another wave of household expenditure, potentially exacerbating financial strains.

“Financial difficulties can lead to disharmony in families,” he warned.

He also highlighted the prevalence of dual-income households in Johor Bahru, where both partners often work to cope with the high cost of living.

He noted that food prices in Johor Bahru are now higher than those in the Klang Valley, attributing this trend to the perception that many residents work in Singapore and earn in Singapore dollars.

“Singaporeans who shop and dine here also contribute to costlier food”

“Singaporeans who shop and dine here also contribute to costlier food,” Mr Loo added, underscoring the impact of cross-border economic dynamics on local affordability.

Looking ahead, he expressed concerns about worsening financial anxiety among Malaysians working in Singapore, especially considering the doubling of retrenchments in the city-state last year, according to data from the Singapore Manpower Ministry.

In addition to addressing immediate concerns, Johor Bahru Befrienders is also focused on enhancing its support infrastructure.

Mr Loo revealed that the organisation requires approximately RM30,000 (approximately S$8,548.66) to equip its new training hall with essential amenities, including computers, projectors, air-conditioners, tables, and chairs.

Established in August 2006, Johor Bahru Befrienders is a team of 56 dedicated volunteers committed to providing emotional support and assistance to those in need. / TISG

SINGAPORE: More than half a million travellers crossed the Singapore-Malaysia land border on Thursday (Mar 28), the Immigrations & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Friday.

The authority said 510,000 travellers cleared through Woodlands and Tuas Checkpoints, ahead of the Good Friday long weekend.

This is the highest recorded number of travellers using the land checkpoints in a single day, it added.

ICA said it observed continuous tailbacks from Malaysia at Woodlands Checkpoint throughout the day, resulting in vehicular queues extending beyond the Seletar Expressway (SLE).

"Tailback was also observed at the Second Link, from Malaysia reaching Tuas Checkpoint."

Traffic to remain heavy .

Traffic is expected to remain very heavy on Friday and Saturday at both land checkpoints with continuous tailbacks from Malaysia’s checkpoints for departing motorists, ICA said.

In a Facebook update at around 1.25pm on Friday, it said that travellers can expect a delay of up to three hours or more.

"At Woodlands Checkpoint, departure car queues tailback from Malaysia have extended to beyond Woodlands Ave 3 exit 10A.

"At Tuas Checkpoint, departure car queues tailback from Malaysia has receded to 2nd Link Bridge."

In another update at about 2.40pm, ICA no longer specified the expected waiting time and the length of the tailback at Woodlands, instead saying: "Heavy departure traffic at Woodlands Checkpoint due to tailback from Malaysia. Delays are expected and travellers are advised to check traffic conditions before embarking on their journey."

In a separate Facebook post at 4.25pm, ICA said that an accident had occurred on the Causeway in the direction of Johor Bahru.

"It is blocking one out of three lanes. Travellers planning to depart Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint should expect delays," it said.

The accident site was cleared by about 5.55pm, with ICA saying that all lanes of the Causeway were operational.

At 7.05pm, it said that the tailback of departure traffic from Malaysia at Woodlands Checkpoint had subsided.

Arrival traffic is also expected to be heavy on Mar 31 as travellers who have departed are expected to return to Singapore, ICA said.

Travellers using the land checkpoints are advised to factor in additional waiting time for immigration clearance, it added.

"ICA also seeks travellers' understanding and cooperation to be patient, observe traffic rules, maintain lane discipline, and cooperate with officers on-site when using the land checkpoints."

What to know about the cargo ship Dali, a mid-sized ocean monster that took down a Baltimore bridge

Crews were set to begin removing the wreckage of a collapsed highway bridge in Baltimore on Friday. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said a large crane, which can lift up to 1,000 tons, would be one of at least two used to clear the channel of the twisted metal and concrete remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the cargo ship that collided with it this week.

The container ship Dali, owned by Grace Ocean PTE, rests against wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the Patapsco River on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, as seen from Pasadena, Md. Investigators began collecting evidence Wednesday from the cargo ship that plowed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused its collapse, while in the waters below divers searched through twisted metal for several construction workers who plunged into the harbor and were feared dead. Here’s what to know about the cargo ship Dali that crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse and leaving six bridge construction workers presumed dead.

MONSTERS OF THE OCEAN

If stood upright, the Dali would reach almost to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris or about two-thirds of the way up the Empire State Building in New York.

It can carry the equivalent of almost 10,000 standard-sized metal shipping containers, and at the time of the accident was carrying nearly 4,700 containers. But while those figures are impressive, the Dali pales in comparison to the world’s largest container ships, which can carry more than 24,000 containers. There are environmental and economic advantages to operating giant container ships , but their sheer size and weight make them difficult to maneuver and stop — especially when something goes wrong.

Dali length: 984 feet (300 meters). Weight: 95,000 tons when empty.

Capacity: 10,000 20-foot (6-meter) containers.

MAYDAY CALL SAVES LIVES

The ship shares a name with one of history’s most celebrated artists, Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

Built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries, one of the world’s largest shipbuilders, the Dali was launched in late 2014. It’s owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd, flies a Singapore flag and is powered by diesel engines.

Danish shipping giant Maersk had chartered the Dali for a planned trip from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, but the ship didn’t get far, with the crew sending a mayday call early Tuesday saying they had lost power and had no control of the steering system. Minutes later, the ship rammed one of the bridge’s columns, causing the entire structure to collapse within seconds.

The ship was moving at about 8 knots, or 9 mph (15 kph). The mayday gave just enough time for authorities to stop bridge traffic and likely prevent more deaths , but not enough time to clear the construction crew that was filling potholes on the bridge. Divers on Wednesday recovered the bodies of two of the workers.

All of the nearly two dozen crew members from the Dali were accounted for after the accident, with one taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

PASSED PREVIOUS INSPECTIONS

The Dali passed a June 2023 inspection in Chile. A faulty pressure gauge for the fuel heaters was identified but fixed before the vessel left the port, according to authorities. The Dali was then inspected in September by the U.S. Coast Guard in New York, and no problems were found. Before it left Baltimore, the ship underwent routine engine maintenance, according to the Coast Guard.

Federal and state officials say the crash appears to be an accident.

The Coast Guard has downloaded the voyage data recorder and sent it to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is building a timeline of what led to the crash, and a preliminary report is expected in the coming weeks. Singapore also plans to carry out its own investigation, which it says will be to identify lessons for the future rather than determine liability.

WHAT’S NEXT

In addition to trying to clear the channel floor of the bridge debris, officials will need to assess the damage to the Dali and make sure it doesn’t leak fuel or sink. Investigators found damage to at least 13 containers on the ship.

The Dali will then likely be towed back to the port and the cargo offloaded.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says it’s too early to say how long it will take to reopen the Port of Baltimore or replace the destroyed bridge. He noted it initially took five years to build the bridge .

The Dali was less than 30 minutes into its planned 27-day journey when the ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.

The ship, which was sailing under the Singaporean flag, was on its way to Sri Lanka and was supposed to arrive there on April 22, according to VesselFinder, a ship tracking website.

The Dali, which is nearly 1,000 feet long, left the Baltimore port around 1 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The ship had two pilots onboard, according to a statement by its owners, Grace Ocean Investment. There were 22 crew members on board, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. There were no reports of any injuries, Grace Ocean said.

Before heading off on its voyage, the Dali had returned to the United States from Panama on March 19, harboring in New York. It then arrived on Saturday in Baltimore, where it spent two days in the port.

Maersk, the shipping giant, said in a statement on Tuesday that it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying Maersk cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard, the statement said, adding that the company was monitoring the investigations being carried out by the authorities and by Synergy Group, the company that was operating the vessel.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the Maersk statement said.

The Dali was built in 2015 by the South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries. The following year, the ship was involved in a minor incident when it hit a stone wall at the port of Antwerp . The Dali sustained damage at the time, but no one was injured.

Jetstar Asia announces direct flights from Broome to Singapore, promises low airfares

The tail of a Jetstar plane with its logo parked at an airport on a sunny day.

Jetstar Asia has this morning announced direct flights between Broome and Singapore, reconnecting Western Australia's north to the bustling south-east Asian hub.

The Singapore carrier today launched its new route with the seasonal service set to begin operation on June 25.

It will offer two return flights each week until October 26.

Flights from Broome to Singapore through Silk Air were  previously launched in 2018 , at a time when the state's tourism industry had experienced a drop in spending from overseas visitors.

Last year, the Broome International Airport sought federal government support to recommence the flights between the Kimberley and Singapore.

The primary barrier to run the international flights was approval to establish permanent, regular border services at the site.

Broome will be reconnected with Changi International Airport, which will expand the hub's network to eight Australian cities.

Tickets for the new route will be on sale today, including special one-way fares starting at $145, with the flights to recommence in April next year.

Hopes to boost WA's international visitors

WA tourism minister Rita Saffioti said the new flight link would expand the state's aviation capacity through the gateway to Asia.

"This Singapore to Broome service presents an incredible opportunity to turbocharge international visitor numbers to Australia's north west, and inject millions into the region's accommodation, hospitality and tourism businesses," she said.

Broome International Airport chief executive Craig Shaw said the direct flights would bring the outback town closer to the rest of the world and recognised the region's desirability as a visitor destination.

"International connections to Broome as the gateway to the Kimberley region have been a long-held ambition for the local tourism industry and the airport," he said.

"As well as being a game changer for the region in terms of tourism, this new regular connection can support new trade opportunities from the north-west of Australia.

"Connectivity is the key to prosperity and livability for any town."

Departure gates at Broome Airport

Jetstar Asia chief executive John Simeone thanked the state government and Broome International Airport for their collaboration and said the route would provide an "incredible" travel experience for visitors.

"Just over four hours away from Singapore, Broome is an amazing destination for those looking for a holiday of a lifetime," he said.
